Since the publication of its first issue in 1992, Ray Gun has set the perimeters of the cutting edge in publishing. Abandoning such conventions as headlines, columns, and even page numbers, the alternative rock-and-roll magazine created a chaotic, abstract style that broke all the rules, clearing the way for a slew of fringe magazines devoted as much to style as to substance. This self-consciously hip, unconventional approach soon emerged on album covers, concert posters, and MTV, signaling the birth of a bona fide movement. The same irreverent approach to production is applied to Ray Gun: Out of Control, forcing you to wade through a maze of random graphics and typefaces to unearth the articles and essays. The search is half the fun, though, as the pieces are enough to capture your interest, even against the backdrop of so much graphic noise.
Customer Reviews:
ray gun - out of control.......2000-11-05
this book is a collection of spreads from the early years of raygun and other magazines whose art direction was lead by david carson. there is a lot of controversy surrounding carson's work, and carson as a graphic designer. i find the work visually stimulating and closer to art than most design i've encountered. i personally admire the intuitive beauty of this book and have spent countless hours looking at it. while i do not recomend carson's other books i do recomend this one.
Collection on the shelf.......1999-07-30
This book is for the Raygun collectors who admires clever typographic layout. A collector's item.
out of gas.......1999-07-15
As the elite of contemporary typograhpy will tell you, Art Director David Carsons was neither type designer nor graphic designer, but instead adept collector of typefaces and free favors from young talent. This book is an attempt, on the eve of the sellout of the Ray Gun Empire, to solidify the merit of a magazine built on 2 things: hype, and the desire of the design community and its afficionados to find a voice for the explosion of creativity ignited by the early macintosh design pioneers and their disciple, Ed Fella, while, initially at least, disregarding the need for relevant indie music reporting. Don't buy it.
Out of Control pushes the envelope.......1997-07-31
Use this book for ideas that will stun and amaze your staid audience whether it be in print or on the Web. I look at it as one giant idea book - it pushes the limit of type and design and gives us a new art form
A magazine picture book?.......1997-07-28
"Out of Control?"
I don't get it. Is this a picture book, or a book that is supposed to honor the magazine? Magazines are about content and design, but here all we get is design. Now, I like design, I like it a lot, and hope to one day get into magazine desiggn, but this book seems to undermine what the magazine should be about. Design vs. Content. How well does the design and presentation relate to the article? I have no idea from looking at this. This is a picture book. From looking at this from a distance (which you are apparently supposed to do) Ray Gun is a nicely laid out and designed magazine. But what's it about? I love design, but I don't give a damn about a publication about information (no matter hhow good the design) if I can't have access to that information. As far as I'm concerned, this collection should showcase and celebrate the representation of information. IAs I've said, I enjoy the design and designers, but Ray Gun was started as a great means of maing the aarticles fun to read...lure the reader in with the design and hook 'em with the words. This may or may not have worked, but the intention was there. No matter how much of a design magazine this is, Ray Gun is the bible of mushc ansstyle, not a graphic design monthly. I think that this collection is a slap in the face to the people who wrote the articles in the mag. Buy "Out of Control" if you want a picture book, but if you want to get any idea at all about what the actual magazine is about, bo to the periodicals section and pick it up.

Blast from the past........2007-04-08
Though it was published some years ago its nice to see that this lovely book is still in print. The landscape format is ideal for showing off the streamline design that was a requirement for any gun of the future.
Each model is shown in profile and a nice touch is the removal of the photos background so the guns are floating on the page. Another idea that gives the book a lift are several pages of period graphics: movie posters, ads and the original gun boxes. The first blaster is from 1935, a surprisingly good condition Buck Rogers pistol, made by Daisy. The models are shown in date order up to the mid-sixties and mostly from the US and Japan with several from Europe.
Considering that this was a really tiny part of the toy market you might think it surprising that a book should be devoted to the subject but there is another equally beautiful title showing more: Zap! Ray Gun Classics. This is out of print but you'll easily be able to pick up a used copy. Both books will give you a nostalgic blast for the past.

an analog era.......2006-07-27
It is amazing that enough material existed on this topic to constitute an entire book. The text reads like a labour of love. Who else would write such a thing?
For science fiction fans, or children of the 50s to the 70s, you can revisit your youth. Some of the ray guns might be recognisable indeed.
The text is nostalgic retrospective on an era with no digital electronics, as we know them now. As far as I can tell, every gun depicted here lacked a microprocessor. Everything was hardwired analog.
amazing archive of lost era..........2000-05-16
This book is the bible for vintage rayguns.
It was great to see the toys of my wonder years in full color. Inspires me to become a collector!
Lots of fun!

Book Description
Who could have believed that a toy robot made in Japan from scrap tin would one day fetch nearly $70,000 at a Sotheby`s auction? Blast Off! chronicles the golden era of space toys, an age of imagination unbound by the more mundane realities of space travel ushered in by Sputnik and the Space Age. Containing hundreds of striking color photos of some of the most beautiful and ofttimes bizarre toys ever created -- many never before seen in print -- Blast Off! unearths the nearly lost histories of these space treasures and the companies that created them. Not limited to the presentation of these unique and fascinating playthings of the past, Blast Off! includes one-of-a-kind prototypes, original packaging and instructions, glimpses into ultra-rare Japanese robot catalogs, long-lost advertisements, vintage comic-strip and pulp-magazine art, and items of every description from every corner of the globe. Blast Off! covers extensively some of the most profound toy and space phenomena of the era, from Buck Rogers to Flash Gordon to the Space Opera programs of the infancy of television to a blow-by-blow account of the greatest Tin Robot auction in history. Blast Off! is an essential resource not only for the collector, but for anyone with an appreciation of pop culture -- or just plain fun! * Introduction by award-wining author, futurist, and cultural commentator Harlan Ellison.

Great Book.......2006-11-03
I gave this book as a birthday present to my boyfriend, who is a lover of vintage robots. He was thrilled with the book! Lots of great pictures and interesting bits of information. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys in robots or vintage toys, either as a serious collector or just someone with a general interest.
The Best of Its Kind.......2006-01-21
As the author of ZAP! Ray Gun Classics, I've looked at a LOT of books on vintage space toys and in my opinion this is the very best one. The diversity of items, production values, factual information and other comments are all superb. I return to this book whenever I need a space toy "nostalgia fix" and I always seem to find something new. No vintage space toy collection should be without it.
a rare gem.......2003-09-10
More than merely a definitive catalogue of the subject, Blast Off is a socio-historical journey. Toys offer provide the prism through which the authors examine fascinating sociological phenomenon. Make no mistake this is the definitive book for this topic, but it becomes a tour de force by examining the history, economics, and sociology implied by these fascinating products from our recent past.

You'll love this book........2003-05-24
Blast Off! is a fun and fascinating read for any fan of science fiction, space toys, or comic books. It's a beautiful coffee table-sized book with sexy images of robots, ray guns, and toys of all types that make you feel nostalgic even if you don't remember these toys from the first time around.
This book offers a history of "in the know" type stories about specific toys and the personalities who created and purchased them. There's the Buck Rogers XZ-31 rocket pistol that led Macy's and Gimbels into their most vicious price war ever, dropping prices by the hour to support the most successful toy promotion the world had ever seen. And there's the collector Bob Lesser who pays double the sticker price to win dealer loyalty. And there's a never-been-published story of the untimely death of Flash Gordon creator Alex Raymond. Plus the authors offer insight into how toys have affected history, entertainment, and the space program.
If you're a fan of Buck Rogers like I am, you should also check out Blast Off! author S. Mark Young's interviews with Erin Grey in Filmfax (Oct/Nov 2002 and Feb/Mar 2003) for a sensitive rendering of a sensational story.

much better than the title or cover.......2002-10-26
I've worked in optics and interferometry and was absolutely delighted with this book.
Lots of tricks for hardware-store improvisation!
If you're not a tinkerer, this is not the book for you. There's little technical depth and no really good experiments or instrument design in it. (good experiments for this kind of book have either enormous educational value or reproduce poorly-understood phenomena).
If you know what you're doing though, this is where to look for tips on building your own optical bench, etc. All the student tricks I'd picked up along the way and then some. I've recommended it to a couple of past colleagues, too.
An update of a classic.......2002-02-20
This book is actually an update to The Laser Cookbook, also written by G. McComb, and which is apparently still in print. That book has gotten very high marks here on Amazon; Lasers, Ray Guns, and Light Cannons contains everything in Laser Cookbook, plus new information on laser diodes, and several additional projects.
Apparently, some folks get upset when a book, like this one, tries to be camp with a playful title and comic-book art. It's what's inside that matters, and there is lots of good information here, from a writer who clearly knows how to explain technical details. For my money, this book is a terrific introduction to the world of hobby lasers.
Skip this if book!.......2001-10-30
I purchased this book in spite of the title and cover because the table of contents indicated it covered the subjects that I was interested in. As with other books by this author the subject matter is lightly covered with little detail or depth.
If you are an absolute beginner and are unable to search the internet for information, then this book might provide useful information.

Book Description
As a young gunner, Napoleon Bonaparte was trained in one of Europe’s finest artillery arms. Both the technological sophistication of their weaponry and the skill of their gunners was largely the result of the adoption of the system devised by one man, Jean-Baptiste Vaquette de Gribeauval. Gribeauval’s standardised system of parts and calibres allowed a degree of uniformity and sophistication in the French artillery that was unmatched throughout Europe, and allowed Napoleon to inherit and develop an arm that could dominate the battlefield. This volume covers the field artillery pieces of the system: the 4-, 8- and 12-pdr guns; light 1-pdr guns and mountain guns; and later innovations such as the 6-pdr gun.
Customer Reviews:
'Get Up Close and Shoot Fast'.......2003-06-11
This is an excellent volume on the artillery systems used by the French during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. The main thrust of the volume is the Gribeauval artillery system which was finally adopted by France in teh 1770s. This was 'perhaps the most important innovation in the history of artillery' surpassing in scope, hitting power, and mobility the Lichtenstein artillery system developed by the Austrians and adopted by them in the 1750s.
Gribeauval's system went further than its Austrian predecessor and encompassed not only guns and artillery vehicles, but organization, uniforms, and tactics of the French artillery arm. Gribeauval had seen the Prussian light guns before the Seven Years' War. He had served with the Austrians during that war and so was intimately familiar with both countries' artillery. Being influenced by both, and taking the best of the older French Valliere system, he developed and fielded his own unique system whose guns would dominate Napoleon's battlefields from 1807 on.
The author covers this unique and utilitarian system quite literally from muzzle to butt plate. He is entirely at home with artillery and artillery terms, and understands the use of artillery, its maintenance, and the technical aspects as well.
Along with artillery, the author also covers the French pontonniers, who were responsible for 'throwing' pontoon bridges over rivers, as well as maintaining the equipment, the hacquets that were used to carry the pontoons, and the pontoons themselves; the artillery train troops, who weren't artillerymen (as the pontonneers were) but were an adjunct organization that drove the horse teams that pulled the artillery's equipment; horse artillery, the new arm for the French artillery that was organized in 1792; and mountain artillery, light guns broken down and, with their ammunition, loaded and carried on pack mules. This study is thorough, accurate, easy to read and use, and it one of the best in the Osprey series.
The technical drawings in color are excellent. They show the range of the Gribeauval system as well as showing the 6-pounder of the System of AN XI (of which there is a full explanantion in the text-the second artillery system covered in the booklet). It is the best explanation of that newer system I have ever read about, and it explains in detail the advantages and shortcomings of that adjunct system to Gribeauval's system of artillery. The only shortcoming of the volume is the last drawing in color which is very poor. It is a print on the gun crew, and the quality of the art work, quite frankly, is not up to the quality of the rest of the booklet. It is inconceivable to me that the author would have voluntarily accepted this for this volume because of his consistent high standards and I do wonder why Osprey published it. It is completely substandard, and is the one blemish in this otherwise superb volume.
This is the best of the new artillery volumes that Osprey is just publishing, though all the artillery volumes are worthwhile. It is highly recommended for any and all enthusiasts of the period and is more than suitable for a reference work. It is well done, reliable, and full of excellent information. If you don't own it, or at least read it, you are missing out on one of the best books on artillery now on the market. Again, if it is written by Rene Chartrand, buy it immediately.
Lots on Gribeauval, Less on Tactics.......2003-04-20
Rene Chartrand, author of so many excellent Osprey volumes, begins his two-volume study of French artillery in the Napoleonic Wars with an examination of French artillery in the period 1792-1815. As usual, Chartrand deftly weaves together historical facts and personal insights to create a cogent overview of the subject at hand. In this case, Chartrand has a lot of ground to cover in less than 48 pages and the Vanguard format appears to have cramped his style. Although this volume is good, it is not great, and size constraints seem to be the culprit. Nevertheless, if you are a Napoleonic enthusiast then this is a good reference volume to have on one's shelf.
Napoleon's Guns 1792-1815 (1) begins with a short section on French artillery in the 18th Century and then rapidly moves into a lengthy discussion of the Gribeauval reforms of 1765. Indeed, a large chunk of the volume focuses on the Gribeauval system and I was surprised to learn just how extensive these reforms were once implemented. Most sources only mention Gribeauval's standardization of French artillery calibers, but he also improved artillery limbers, caissons, and ancillary equipment. Yet the most important Gribeauval reform was the quantitative increases; a typical French field army had its artillery support increased from 60 to 160 medium caliber cannon. Chartrand notes that Napoleon was very lucky to rise to prominence at a point when the French artillery had marked quantitative and qualitative advantages over all its opponents. Indeed, Napoleon recognized the value of the new field artillery and made it the centerpiece of his Grande Armée.
Chartrand does spend some time discussing the horse artillery units and the artillery trains (both interesting sections), as well as the regimental 4-pounder guns. However, there is no real discussion of the organization of different types of French field batteries or how a battery was commanded in combat. Supply issues are sidestepped. Chartrand does have sections on the paint schemes of the artillery, a brief section on ammunition and notes on artillery in the Imperial Period. Although the title suggests that coverage begins in 1792, there is virtually no mention of French artillery before 1800 in this volume. The color illustrations accompanying this volume are quite good: a 12 pounder field gun; a 6-inch howitzer; a caisson; and 8-pounder with limber and tools; a limber; a 6 pounder; and a 4-pounder in action.
Certainly the oddest omission is the almost total lack of information about the performance characteristics of the Gribeauval artillery pieces. There is only a single brief chart that lists typical ranges for ball, canister and grape ammunition, but this chart does not mention charges. Any artillerymen knows that different charges will affect the range that can be achieved, but Chartrand never discusses this important subject in this volume. Essentially, Chartrand used up most of the space in this volume discussing the Gribeauval system and artillery design issues, leaving precious little space for discussing relevant tactical issues. While I did learn a lot of interesting aspects of the Gribeauval system that are not always apparent, this volume is not very useful for understanding how the French employed their artillery in combat.

Serious Electronics.......2003-12-09
This book teaches practical,
hands-on experience with some exciting
science projects that you aren't likely to
encounter elsewhere.
The ultrasonic listener extends the sense of
hearing to the realm of sounds above 20kHz.
The low-power one-transistor fm radio
transmitter is a useful tool to have in
your bag of tricks; it can be built on an
hour's notice, and for under $1.
It is an educational and worthwhile book.
That's the good news.
Now for a word of caution:
What I'm suggesting here is that you approach
the projects in this great book with wisdom and
an ability to think vigorously and persistently.
On one hand, If you mangage to complete and operate
all this book's projects, including adjustment of the
high-voltage supply of the cutting CO2 laser, and still
have not qualified for a postumous Darwin Award, then you
have demonstrated you are either a bizzarrely lucky fool
or a master technician who has the iron will to stay
alive by sticking to impeccable safety procedures.
And before you make your own homemade EMP generator,
consider that, at the time Mr. Ianinni wrote
this wonderous book, the electronic landscape
was much less involved, without the so many
co$tly thing$ like cell phone$ and PDA$ in it.
The radius of de$truction could lead irate
villagers (now reduced to a technological level of
torches and pitchforks) directly to your laboratory.
At least one of the devices i.e taser, have gotten
negative legislative attention since the book was
first published.
Ok; so now you know some of these projects
are genuinely hazardous.
Take care. Pay attention. Get old.
Keep one hand in your pocket.
The Book Makes It Possible.......2003-08-05
Alot of neat gadgets and plans in this book. The schematics are accompanied by a drawing with resistors etc. It is amazing this book came out in '83 since alot of these gadgets are unheard of. Probably because they do have a degree of safety that should be applied to their use. The writer sells the actual products in kits or pre built. He backs them up with proven theory and experience. I probably wont build many or one of the gadgets but the book is excellent reference and one of a kind, until his next one comes out. Which will be worth a read as well.
Old Book, New Electronics.......2001-12-21
This is an exlent book of electronics fo beginners and experts alike. It gives step-by-step instructions on building real lasers, imitation lasers, cutting lasers, sonic devices, ultrasonic devices, magnetic disturbance detectors, and much more. Requires little or no electrical experience.
Unique book.......2001-07-23
This is a very cool book, but it really is not for the average joe. You get a parts list, and some limited instructions, and then a picture of how the project should look when it's like 75% done. It is hard to follow. From parts list to 3/4 done in a matter of like a page.
Amazing Book!.......1999-11-27
This is an amazing book with plans for anything cool that you could ever want to build. It has very clear, and easy to understand instructions. There are lots of diagrams, and detailed parts lists. All of the things work very well, and the material cost are all less than 100 dollars.

Fascinating and a topic of further research.......2004-01-07
This is an excellent text that deals with the construction of a MASER - it is simialr to a laser but uses micorwaves instead of light (and can basically burn things up) - from parts that can be found in a microwave. It does a decent job of covering the theory of MASERs but is mostly practical. This book can also be used as a first look into the fascinating discipline of electromagnetic weapons, a topic that is all to relevant today, as "e-bombs" are an inexpensive, realistic choice for the terrorist. Note that this book is still very much in print (don't buy the overpriced used copies from Amazon.com) and can be purchased from the publishers site is faster service is required (deltapress dot com
<- I write it like this to hopefully prevent Amazon.com from censoring it hehehe).

Zap back to childhood.......2001-08-13
I love books about the backwaters of American popular culture so I was pleased to get a copy of Leslie Singer's affectionate look at ray guns of the past. The hundred color photos in this nicely presented book will provoke plenty of nostalgia for those who grew up with Buck Rogers. Mr Singer's favorite is the Atomic Disintergrator (page 18) but my favorite is the space car (page 48) streamline curves straight out of the New York World's Fair in 1939, though it was made by Wannatoys in the fifties. Not a gun but it looks so good Singer included it anyway!
If you are really into the subject have a look at: Ray Gun by Eugene Metcalf and Frank Maresca, plenty of excellent color photos, including a quite stunning gun (page 101) from sixties England, the Space Outlaw Gun. There is also a selection of film posters and boxes the guns came in. Both books have a useful bibliography and 'Ray Gun' even lists web sites.
