Customer Reviews:
This should be your first Pedal steel book.......2007-01-19
Pedal steel guitar is one of the most beautiful sounding instruments, but also one of the hardest to learn. This book helps you get started on a very complex instrument. I was amazed how quickly I was making good sounding music. I highly recommend this book for anyone starting out on pedal steel.
Classic and thorough book about the pedal steel guitar.......2006-07-25
This book is an excellent introduction and guide for anyone who is interested in learning about the pedal steel guitar.Although it is now somewhat dated,it still contains a vast amount of useful knowledge about this unusual instrument. In addition to providing a brief history of the instrument,it includes some minimal instruction, maintenance tips, choosing an instrument, and a wealth of other topics. It also offers info about the different players of the instrument, their tunings(copedants) and lots of photos. The pedal steel guitar is indeed a curious instrument and this book walks you through step by step to help you understand what it's all about.
Practically every steel player has read it or knows about it.
Excellent.......2006-03-15
Although written 30 years ago, this book is still very timely and informative. I would recommend it very highly for the person who wishes to learn to play the pedal steel guitar. It can also be very useful for the student who has started to play but has not reached the level he/she wishes.
A MUST HAVE RESOURCE!!!!!!!!.......2006-02-17
This is the 2nd copy of this book that I have purchased. The first copy was purchased when the book was 1st released and this new copy is to replace the original which I "loaned" to a student. Now I have the examples on CD instead of that little floppy record that came with the 1st copy! LOL
Anyone wanting to get started learning how to play pedal steel should have this book and read it cover to cover, again and again. Just about the 1st work on this subject and still one of the best ever written, thanks Winnie.
Best Introduction to Pedal Steel.......2000-03-13
There is nothing that compares with this book. It explains how the instrument works, teaches you how to play it, and introduces the reader to the culture of steel guitarists. Plenty of old pictures of the great players, and an appendix of their tunings (as of 1975!). I can't recommend this book highly enough.

Book Description
It's a golden age for guitar effects pedal users and makers right now, with over 40 years of design experience and musical experimentation to draw on. Your choice includes the original, pioneering "vintage" models, or souped-up "clones" from more contemporary designers. Dave Hunter spells out the pros and cons of both in this uniquely comprehensive guide. In a guitarist-friendly style, the book explores: what each type of effect does * how pedals work * the best order to connect pedals * and how to make the most of the pedals you have. Also includes exclusive interviews revealing eight top pedal makers' radically diverse approaches to building effects.

Wonderful -- Really Helps Figure Out TONE.......2007-05-11
I am an experienced acoustic and classical quitar player who has always owned an electric guitar (tele) and a nice amp (Rivera R11255) but never really figured out how to get the kind of tone I like out of the instruments. (I need lessons and more practice time as well, but that's another story.) I was looking for a book + CD that would help me figure out what pedals to buy and why (I was always told that you had to have some pedals if you are going to play electric.)
This book + CD delivers the goods. Hunter gives tons of information on how and why guitar effects are used, their history, loads of data on classic, popular, and even obscure specific boxes. He tells you what some of your heros actually use to get their tone.
Best of all, you can hear the sound on the CD -- this is absolutely key. There is no universally understood way to describe sounds in words: you have to hear them. Hunter provides nice sequences of licks, appropriate for each kind of box, and plays the same sequence for each box in a category of box (say, tube screamers, or chorus -- he plays the exact same sequence for each chorus box). That way, you get an apples-to-apples comparison of the sounds of different choices. It's great. The sound clips run from about 0:30 to around 1:20, plenty of time and licks to get the sound in your head. He doesn't demo every box on the CD (92 tracks) but very many and pretty much all the ones you're going to be wondering about.
I can't imagine a better tool for the beginner or intermediate player, looking to spend their money wisely on stomp boxes.
My eventual choices:
Visual Sound Route 66 American Overdrive
Proco Rat
Fuzz Face
Boss Digital Delay DD-6
Boss Chorus
the stomp box universe.......2007-02-05
Very nice book with technical informations, history of guitar effects, description and pictures of many guitar pedals, interview of Roger Mayer, and the men from Electro-Harmonix or Fulltone (sorry, I don't remember their name), and some other...
I would have been nice to see some manufacturers like next (an old Japanese manufacturer), tech 21, and some models are missing. But it's impossible to have everything in only one book anyway.
Great primer for newbie with effects........2006-11-27
I bought this book to try and get an overview of effects pedals. I think it does an outstanding job, providing a review of vintage effects as well as some of today's new pedal designers. If you are looking to get into effects pedals, this book is a great way to start.
A handbook everyone should have........2006-08-16
While other books introduce you to various effects or briefly expose you to the type of sounds they make, none of them that I have read give you as much in-depth information as this book. If you are a novice to effects pedals like myself, or even an experienced player, you should read this book before buying any effects pedals.
The theme of the book is that guitarists played on what was available at the time, and most of them changed their gear over time in trying to attain better or new sound, so don't get stuck on who played what, hung-up on what parts were used in vintage vs. modern, or even by claims from pedal modifiers that their modifications to existing pedals are somehow superior to the pedals original manufacture. Decide for yourself what sounds good to you by testing various brands and even various models from the same maker or you could end up paying hundreds of dollars for something you thought was going to sound magical with your combination of guitar, amp, and playing style and be totally disappointed.
The book progresses from a look at each type of effect presenting the reader with definitions of each, how they work and alter the sound, what makes them special, and sample schematic for those that may be technically inclined to do additional research and build their own effects or for readers like me who have a curious nature. "Getting Great Guitar Sounds" by Michael Ross is a good companion to this book, as one or two definitions seemed to be a little deficient. The book then gives some history limited to items of historic, influential, or other significance i.e., things that have made a major impact or contribution to music and or effects themselves (additional history and side notes along with more photos can be found in "The Stompbox" by Art Thompson and I've seen, but not read Analogue Man's book about vintage pedals). Next, a chapter on the original effects makers followed by a chapter about the modern manufacturers. Following the makers is a chapter on tips and tricks, which I found to be the weakest chapter, but still rather good. Again, I would recommend "Getting Great Guitar Sounds" as a supplement. The book ends with a chapter of interviews with some of the makers, and is one of the best chapters as Mr. Hunter asks the makers most, if not all the questions a lot of players would ask and gets some pretty candid answers. I've read some of the authors other books on amps and such, and he has the ability to get those he interviews to really open up.
The CD that accompanies the book is packed with samples covering the various categories of effects. Each sample is long and varied enough and gives a good introduction to each type of effect. The author goes even further by providing, as best as he can, side-by-side comparisons of pedals by various makers for effects like overdrive and distortion and to a lesser degree the rest. The book provides all the pedal/guitar/amp settings used to make each sample. I found myself listening to the CD over and over again. First, straight through, then more focused when comparing pedals within the same category. After getting caught up in listening for which sample sounded best in it's category, I had to remind myself that the purpose of these comparisons is to broaden the listener's exposure to these effects and to reinforce the ideas expressed in the text. While one pedal may sound better than another on the CD, based on a single application and setup, it may not sound as good in another application with your own rig.
The author has limited this book strictly about effects pedals themselves with a word or two in passing about pedal related items. I would like to have seen a chapter or appendix about effects pedal related items, e.g., a short discussion about using batteries vs. power supplies designed especially for effects pedals, commercially available pedal boards with/without built in power supplies, and tips on how to travel with your pedals. The chapter might also include advice on the care and maintenance if any is required. I would like to have seen a small discussion about double pedals and multi-effect pedals which are more closely related to a stompbox than a rack effect. It would be nice if there were an appendix or a listing of each effect along with some songs and artist that demonstrate the effect. I felt like I was back in school as I was taking notes on each chapter writing down the effect including brand if noted, the artist and song if also noted, so that I could see if I had it in my record collection or if I needed to get a copy from the library or music store. Finally, I would love to have seen more photos in color. Part of the fun with effects pedals is all the colors they come in.
great book and CD.......2005-11-23
The only bad thing about this book is now I'm scouring eBay and music stores to add to my pedal collection! The CD was super helpful too. Analogman's book is a little more complete but a lot more expensive.

Customer Reviews:
quite a fun, but not stuff for a single book.......2007-05-14
I really enjoyed reading this book. It is worth, but contains only small amount of information. You may find the entire contents in the book could be written as a couple of chapters. However, the CD was absolutely useful.
Good introduction.......2007-05-07
this book is a nice introduction to effects pedals and their use for the guitar enthusiast who doesn't know the difference between a fuzz tone and a compression pedal.
home studio.......2007-03-20
The information was very helpful in setting up my pedal board. The CD with the audio of all the pedals was really helpful in shopping for new sounds. The diagram for the suggested setup was helpful also.
OK for newbies needs work for everyone else.......2006-06-29
First, an introduction to myself; I took some folk/classic guitar lessens around the age of 13. In high school, I learned the electric bass, but was not involved with any bands or musicians outside of school. After graduation, I rarely played either instrument until about a year ago. Now, I've renewed my interest in guitar and bass and I've been trying to educate myself more about guitars, amps, and effects--things I never really learned about in my younger days. Before purchasing this book, I started by brushing the dust off and reading my old copy of The Guitar Handbook by Ralph Denyer (A "must have" book)--a book I partially read in my youth, bought and read Guitar Effects Pedals: The Practical Handbook by Dave Hunter (Read this before you buy any effects pedals!), read a library copy of The Stompbox by Art Thompson (History of pedals with many photos), bought and read Getting Great Guitar Sounds 2nd ed. by Michael Ross (A fine book about tone).
I read this book as if I had not read anything else prior. The positives going for this book are that it is well organized and follows a logical progression starting with the guitar itself then amplifiers then effects and so on. The last four chapters, Building a Pedalboard, Multi-Effects Processors, Amplifier and Effect Modeling, Getting a Good Tone through Your PC, Stylistic Guitar Tones, and Famous Effected Guitarists are topics usually not discussed in the other books that I have read. The appendix titled Effected Guitar Music contains a list of effects with a selection of songs along with the artist that demonstrate the effect, something that I wish other books would do. The CD that comes with the book lets the reader hear an example of each effect from the effects chapters 3-12 and also samples from chapters 13-17. I think this book would be good for absolute beginners, but even I picked up a few new things.
The negatives: While this book is meant to be in the genre of an introduction and at 60 pages, is clearly not meant to be a handbook nor encyclopedia, it just barely passes as an introduction due to its very short descriptions and definitions. After reading chapters 13-17, I came away with more knowledge than before, but now wanting more information with no direction on where to go from here. The information you get from this book is analogous to going to a party and getting introduced to several new people then leaving the party coming away with knowing only their names and how they said the word hello. Getting Great Guitar Sounds 2nd ed. by Michael Ross, has 77 pages and does a better job covering most of the material that is presented in Introduction to Guitar Tone & Effects chapters 1-12. The CD contains approximately 13 min of examples. Though not expecting a fully loaded CD, I was expecting maybe 20-30 min of samples. One or two strums on the guitar to demonstrate an effect seems deficient given that effects produce different sounds whether you are strumming chords or playing arpeggios. The examples from the Style chapter were also short and limited. (Note: Getting Great Guitar Sounds does not come with a CD.) Finally, the back cover touts over 74 photos but almost all of them are either out of focus or are some fuzzy computerized representation.
Overal, If you start out knowing nothing about tone and effects, you will have gained some basic understanding by reading this book but you will have little practical knowledge. For more experienced players, I think this book could easily go from "pass on" to "must have" with a little rewriting, clearer photos, and more and better examples on the CD, while still keeping the number of pages between 60-80.
Guitar tone and effects.......2006-05-15
I got some very good ideas to improve the use of my effects. Explains good stuff.

The Art of Urban Cycling: Lessons from the Street
ASIN: 1576873145 |
Book Description
Best-selling author Peter Sutherland's newest title, Pedal, is a wild ride alongside a band of New York City's most feared and respected inhabitants: bike messengers. In a book of photographs and a documentary on DVD, Sutherland follows the frenetic trips and lives of the cyclists who live by their own rules of the road. In Pedal, Sutherland documents bike messengers competing in the 2005 Cycle Messenger World Championships in New York City. Going straight to the center of this urban subculture, Sutherland serves up compelling portraits of the competitors from dozens of countries, in motion and at ease, checking out each other's bags, lingering over modifications to bikes and bodies. Between events like sprints, distance racing, and skid contests, Sutherland shows us the riders' elegant physicality, complex individuality, and unique community that crosses boundaries of race, gender, age, and class. And he doesn't shy away from the blood and bruises that come part and parcel with the messenger's life. Sutherland delves deep into the world of the messengersa world usually seen from the outsideand returns with a dynamic document that evokes the unbridled anarchy and energy of its inhabitants. The accompanying DVD is a fast-paced documentary film about surviving in the streets of New York City as a bicycle messenger. It features messengers from all walks of life as they battle traffic in a race to make their next delivery on time. Directed by Sutherland and produced by Ana Lombardo, Pedal the documentary lets viewers live the spectacle of the delivery itself. It premiered in 2001 at the South by Southwest film festival, and was later acquired by the Sundance channel, where it aired until 2004.
Customer Reviews:
Pretty Good Package overall.......2007-07-24
The photo booklet that comes with Pedal is a nice bonus as I originally purchased this for the documentary as I had viewed a couple clips of it on Youtube. Personally I always found the bike messenger "scene" as something very interesting and I found that this documentary gave one a good feel for it, but I will say that if you're not already interested in this topic the documentary is a bit short and not that engrossing.
Review of PEDAL.......2007-01-15
It's an interresting document as it exposes this "counterculture" collective - bicycle messengers. The book is rather superficial with plenty of pictures and only four texts which vary considerably, ranging from contradictory-ragefilled-selfcentered-discourse to some interesting clearly depicting analysis. The DVD is great! Covering that cosmos: from the despatcher to the messenger, the bike races to the pedal driven task force in action.
Overall I rate it 4 stars, since it gets you acquainted to the NY messenger collective.
Jorge Coelho, Portugal, Faro
Not as great as i thought it'd be.......2006-11-11
As a former messenger and current bicycle enthusiast, i usually enjoy any documentary or movie on being a bike messenger. I just exspected more from this one. Its kinda depressing at times (tho, being a messenger can be depressing at times so i understand). The packaging and book are nice tho.
Don't Judge a Book by Its Photographer.......2006-11-10
Anyone familiar with the current art scene would jump to buy this and understandbly so with the names involved, unfortunately, it's a disappointment. I hate to slam it because I like Sutherland's work, but I was just hoping for so much more out of the documentary. Most of the interviews are boring (mainly because they last too long), there aren't very many messangers shown, there's nothing on the film about the CMWC, which could've at least provided him with more interviews, and there's only one messanger whose life is shown beyond the surface.
PEDAL is powered by the NY city streets... deep in the funk........2006-08-10
This DVD is for all those interested in the subculture of bicycles, not just bike messengers or track bikes, but fighting for space with cars/taxi cabs, pedestrians and the police. This documentary is fast paced alongside those in the messenger (outlaw) community, and shows the true grit of the rotten apple. While the book has very little text, the small amount is amazing, and it is covered with beautiful pictures of roudy messengers competing in the Bike Messenger World Championships. A MUST BUY FOR ANY BICYCLE ENTHUSIAST. Definitely worth watching over and over again.

Great drawings and plans.......2005-12-12
I built a guitar using the drawings and ideas on this CD. The guitar looks great and works perfect. I took the plans for the mechanism to a machine shop and had them made. I really like my guitar. I am considering building a double neck.
Money down the drain..........2005-09-03
This is a big disappointment. Not Mac-compatible, which is not stated anywhere on the disc or sleeve. V-e-r-y slow even on a fast PC, with a messy, un-intuitive interface. Some design suggestions are highly questionable, drawings are non-standard with very few measurements, some are of very poor quality.

He's dancing on his pedals
In a most immodest way.
-Tour de France, 1989
In the tradition of Phil Rizzuto's O Holy Cow!, this is a lighthearted, ironic arrangement into verse form of Phil Liggett's florid, enthusiastic narrations of cycling's greatest races. Anyone who has ever watched the Tour de France on TV knows Phil, and his flights of rhetorical brilliance are legion. Bicycling Magazine writes, "His voice defines the sport the way Howard Cosell's did for boxing and football." Astonishingly poetic and intelligent, Phil Liggett's narrations lend themselves perfectly to this found poetry approach.
Bill Strickland is executive editor of Bicycling Magazine and the author of The Quotable Cyclist.

Phil Liggett Live.......2007-01-04
This is a great bedside version of Phil at the Tour. You can hear his voice as you read his "poetry"! Great gift for the Phil/Tour de France fans of the world.
Great find... a book that you will enjoy for yourself or give to a friend........2006-01-04
This was a well researched and written book. A real find that will be around as a classic to the cycling enthusiast.
a very nice dance indeed.......2005-06-27
This book, a tribute to the dean of Tour de France broadcasters, Phil Liggett, is a genuine find. Donaldson has taken 30 years' worth of Liggett's Tour de France calls and recast them into more than 200 poems of varying lengths. Of course, it doesn't hurt that Liggett himself has a natural gift for rhythm and metaphor, as well as a wide-angle style of commentary that has always made TDF seem so much larger than a mere athletic event. In Liggett's world, and thus Donaldson's poems, cyclists become kings and jokers, conquerors and the conquered, and/or any number of other stages in between. The book's title, by the way, comes from a classic Liggett moment: Watching a cyclist climb a peak during the 1989 event, the broadcaster observed, "He's dancing on the pedals in a most immodest way."
Some of the poems pack a surprising punch in a very few lines, all the more so for anyone who has ever climbed on a bicycle seat for any event requiring endurance. In this category is one titled "Contender": "He is settling in./He is recovering./And he will kick in." Or there's this one, "Inferno," which reminded me of the John Berryman poetry I read in college: "There's our friend/the devil/who's joined us/the past few days." Among the longer poems, I particularly liked "World of Hurt," one of a number of tributes to Greg LeMond. Donaldson also uses typography and phrasing to amplify the meaning and impact of the individual poems. (Check out "Come to Paris." It'll make you smile.) Finally, embedded between the lines of the poems is a succinct history of TDF, sure to evoke nostalgic feelings in any true fan.
Overall, for anyone who's into cycling, sportscasting genius, or poetry itself, Dancing is a very nice read.

Some great factual material for learning Country guitar.......2007-02-04
This is the kind of book that I wish I'd had 30 years ago. It shows real-world examples of how to play pedal steel parts on the guitar and the material is accessible and reasonable. You don't have to stop your life and devote months to learning the all of the examples because they are all useful on their own and compliment each other well. Forest Rodgers comes across as a friendly, helpful player that treats you as a peer, sort of like meeting a friendly player in a music store and having him show you some neat ideas.
If you can find a copy of the video by the same name by all means do so. The two are a perfect compliment to one another and the presentation of the video is both entertaining and informative.
Review of Pedal Steel Licks Book.......2007-01-12
This book is a very good reference for usable pedal steel licks. SOme of the simplest steel licks are correctly omitted and some ofthe better ones are here. This book assumes that you can play fairly well and string bending to the correct tone is not a problem. The examples on the CD are clear, although I would redo the introductory tune since I didn't think it represented the licks that well. I would suggest that these licks be transposed to your favorite country keys of A, C, D ,E and practiced on several different string sets so they become part of your everyday playing.

Product Description
This is the standard-bearer for pedal steel instruction books. It is extremely comprehensive in scope. Written by DeWitt Scott, founder of the International Pedal Steel Guitar Convention and member of the Pedal Steel Guitar Hall of Fame, this course teaches E9 tuning, Nashville set-up pedal steel with three floor and three knee levers. If you want to learn pedal steel, this book will show you how. The accompanying CD is in split-track format, allowing the student to play with the rhythm accompaniment, the pedal-steel solo parts, or both.

Not for beginners.......2006-08-21
I know nothing about pedal steel guitars and I assumed that "the standard" for instruction would at least start me out in the right direction. It did not. Take for example a discussion on pics. "The length of the shank [of the thumb pic] will affect your playing so be sure to try several sizes and lengths before you decide." How can I try it before I know how to use it? How does the length of the shank affect the sound? How should it fit the thumb in the first place? A discussion of the finger pics was equally lacking. Consider the statement, "[the bar] . . . varies in weight." So? What weight does one choose and based on what? Finally, on pics, how does one stroke or pic the strings? In the same manner as one strokes or pics a classical guitar with the fingernails? It does not say. What about one's position at the instrument: hands straight, arched, in your pocket; forearms parallel, sloped up, down; feet in relation to the knees and all in relation to the knee and foot pedals? It does not say. For me, a beginners book of instruction first answers the question, "Hey, what's that thing?" Then it goes on to describe the thing in detail. Then it details how one mounts the thing. Then it details how one handles the thing. Then it ties it all together and details how one uses the thing. This book does none of that. Rather, it starts with tuning the instrument, gives a rudimentary introduction to music and then turns you loose on a tune. Huh?

Publication received in good order & condition; thank you. Postage costs too high, though; could have been disptatched in an envelope, rather than the carton it came in...
