"This is a first-class book dealing with one of the most important areas of current research in applied statistics…the methods described are widely applicable…the standard of exposition is extremely high."
--Short Book Reviews from the International Statistical Institute
"The new chapters (10-14) improve an already excellent resource for research and instruction. Their content expands the coverage of the book to include models for discrete level-1 outcomes, non-nested level-2 units, incomplete data, and measurement error---all vital topics in contemporary social statistics. In the tradition of the first edition, they are clearly written and make good use of interesting substantive examples to illustrate the methods. Advanced graduate students and social researchers will find the expanded edition immediately useful and pertinent to their research."
--TED GERBER, Sociology, University of Arizona
"Chapter 11 was also exciting reading and shows the versatility of the mixed model with the EM algorithm. There was a new revelation on practically every page. I found the exposition to be extremely clear. It was like being led from one treasure room to another, and all of the gems are inherently useful. These are problems that researchers face everyday, and this chapter gives us an excellent alternative to how we have traditionally handled these problems."
--PAUL SWANK, Houston School of Nursing, University of Texas, Houston
Popular in the
First Edition for its rich, illustrative examples and lucid explanations of the theory and use of hierarchical linear models (HLM), the book has been reorganized into four parts with four completely new chapters. The first two parts, Part I on "The Logic of Hierarchical Linear Modeling" and Part II on "Basic Applications" closely parallel the first nine chapters of the previous edition with significant expansions and technical clarifications, such as:
* An intuitive introductory summary of the basic procedures for estimation and inference used with HLM models that only requires a minimal level of mathematical sophistication in Chapter 3
* New section on multivariate growth models in Chapter 6
* A discussion of research synthesis or meta-analysis applications in Chapter 7
* Data analytic advice on centering of level-1 predictors and new material on plausible value intervals and robust standard estimators
While the first edition confined its attention to continuously distributed outcomes at level 1, this second edition now includes coverage of an array of outcomes types in Part III:
* New Chapter 10 considers applications of hierarchical models in the case of binary outcomes, counted data, ordered categories, and multinomial outcomes using detailed examples to illustrate each case
* New Chapter 11 on latent variable models, including estimating regressions from missing data, estimating regressions when predictors are measured with error, and embedding item response models within the framework of the HLM model
* New introduction to the logic of Bayesian inference with applications to hierarchical data (Chapter 13)
The authors conclude in Part IV with the statistical theory and computations used throughout the book, including univariate models with normal level-1 errors, multivariate linear models, and hierarchical generalized linear models.
To handle this, Hierarchical Linear Models were developed. The book gives a detailed treatment. A very comprehensive discussion. Including the handling of meta-analysis, where we wish to combine results across different studies. Which then involves using empirical Bayesian estimates. This method has also seen important usage in evaluating medical studies, conducted by different researchers on the same topic.
The book also illustrates the essential development of non-trivial computer programs to perform the gruntwork.
You will need a solid background in statistics to find this book useful. At a minimum, a year of statistics at the undergraduate level.

Variety and quality.......2007-03-31
The book presents a really useful range of techniques structured in an appropriate sequence that builds skills. The overall quality of the book is very good. Highly recommended.
Beyond nuts and bolts.......2007-03-21
This is not just another "how to" book it goes beyond the technical to cover the why of editing. The author uses actual feature film footage to convey the decision process for the art of editing.
highly recommended! more than a how-to manual. .......2007-02-17
This extraordinary book/dvd set is much more than a simple "how-to" manual. And, in its own way, it's all really more than a book on editing. It really addresses the entire film making process, albeit from the POV of an editor. Possibly it is most valuable in its emphasis on tone and genre. The exercises are truly instructive, in every sense of the word. My own method of getting through the lessons was to read the chapter all the way through, first. Then go back, at the computer, with the footage loaded and follow, step-by-step. One word of warning - this really is an advanced program. I don't suggest getting this book as a primer for first time users. Get it if you already have some proficiency with the basics of FCP. Otherwise I think it'll be a bit overwhelming. For me, this way actually better than sitting in a classroom learning from a live teacher (something I've done, as well). Highly recommended.
Great Product.......2007-02-15
I haven't exactly read this book yet, but I do own one and love it. It's so helpful. If anyone is interested in editing these are great books to read.
Great Training for FCP Certification.......2006-07-19
It is great to have a project ready to start editing on a moments notice and really provides some valuable working experience that will help you with a real job. Enjoy! This book is great resource for intermediate editors who wish to start the journey to be an advanced Final Cut Pro. I have enjoyed the entire Apple Training Series, the only thing I don't like about them is that it seems that a new book with a lot of similar material will come out every year depending on the FC studio releases.

Oracle Developer Advanced Forms and Reports .......2007-05-21
The seller is excellent. speedy delivery. I will buy books from him again.
pretty poor book.......2006-06-21
very poorly laid out and confusing presaentation of both forms and reports. some fairly good detailed examples (if you can find them) but the overall presentation is chaotic.
really not worth the bucks
Great for forms, not so much for reports.......2002-12-17
This is a solid reference book for those doing primarily Forms development, but it lacks quite a little in the Reports department. If you're buying it for Reports development, as I did, you'll be disappointed. I have yet to find a very good Reports reference. That said, this is probably the best one out there. The book contains something like 70% - 30% Forms info to Reports info (and that may be a little generous). It does have a few good examples and is an easy read.
Great Book.......2002-01-10
This book is a great tool for creating Visual Basic Applications
Not a must but a very Useful Book........2001-11-26
Thought this book does not explain any of the subjects in detail but it touches almost all the advanced topics of Oracle Forms and Reports. If a lead can get you going and you can get the details yourself... this is the book for you.
Book Description
THE APPROACH
"J. Scott Long’s approach is one that I highly commend. There is a decided emphasis on the application and interpretation of the specific statistical techniques. Long works from the premise that the major difficulty with the analysis of limited and categorical dependent variables (LCDVs) is the complexity of interpreting nonlinear models, and he provides tools for interpretation that can be widely applied across the different techniques."
--Robert L. Kaufman, Sociology, Ohio State University
"A thorough and comprehensive introduction to analyzing categorical and limited dependent variables from a traditional regression perspective that provides unusually clear discussions concerning estimation, identification, and the multiplicity of models available to the researcher to analyze such data."
--Scott Hershberger, Psychology, University of Kansas
THE ORGANIZATION
"The thing that impresses me the most about this book is how organized it is. The chapters are in excellent logical sequence. There is a useful repetition of important concepts (e.g., estimation, hypothesis testing) from chapter to chapter. J. Scott Long has done a terrific job of organizing like things from disparate literatures, such as the scaler measures of fit in Chapter 4."
--Herbert L. Smith, Sociology, University of Pennsylvania
"A major strength of the book is the way that it is organized. The chapter about each technique is written in a highly organized and parallel format. First the statistical basis and assumptions for the particular model are developed, then estimation issues are considered, then issues of testing and interpretation are considered, then variations and extensions are explored."
--Robert L. Kaufman, Sociology, Ohio State University
FOR THE COURSE
"I have been teaching a course on categorical data analysis to sociology graduate students for close to 20 years, but I have never found a book with which I was happy. J. Scott Long’s book, on the other hand, is nearly ideal for my objectives and preferences, and I expect that many other social scientists will feel the same way. I will definitely adopt it the next time I teach the course. It deals with the right topics in the most desirable sequence and it is clearly written."
--Paul D. Allison, Sociology, University of Pennsylvania
Class-tested at two major universities and written by an award-winning teacher, J. Scott Long’s book gives readers unified treatment of the most useful models for categorical and limited dependent variables (CLDVs). Throughout the book, the links among models are made explicit, and common methods of derivation, interpretation, and testing are applied. In addition, Long explains how models relate to linear regression models whenever possible. In order for the reader to see how these models can be applied, Long illustrates each model with data from a variety of applications, ranging from attitudes toward working mothers to scientific productivity.
The book begins with a review of the linear regression model and an introduction to maximum likelihood estimation. It then covers the logit and probit models for binary outcomes--providing details on each of the ways in which these models can be interpreted, reviews standard statistical tests associated with maximum likelihood estimation, and considers a variety of measures for assessing the fit of a model. Long extends the binary logit and probit models to ordered outcomes, presents the multinomial and conditioned logit models for nominal outcomes, and considers models with censored and truncated dependent variables with a focus on the tobit model. He also describes models for sample selection bias and presents models for count outcomes by beginning with the Poisson regression model and showing how this model leads to the negative binomial model and zero inflated count models. He concludes by comparing and contrasting the models from earlier chapters and discussing the links between these models and models not discussed in the book, such as loglinear and event history models. Helpful exercises are included in the book with brief answers included in the appendix so that readers can practice the techniques as they read about them.
Customer Reviews:
Very Very Readable Book.......2007-04-28
This book is very readable. The author correctly claims that this book has been designed following questions from his various students in understanding such regression models. There is clarity in each and every argument used together with alternative ways of interpretation and testing. Great book.
Maximal clarity on the subject.......2005-05-31
If you have to do statistical analysis where your dependent variable is a count, a dichotomy, categorical, or ordinal, and if you are not a grad student in a statistics department, this is a book for you. Long clearly illustrates the need for the different models, covers the essentials of each, and provides further references. Obviously, no book on such a range of topics could be complete - there are entire long books written on each of the chapters in this one. But this is a good place to start, and it is nice to have it all 'tied together' - this makes it easier to see the relationships among the models.
Extremely good book on Logistic Regression.......2002-12-12
Since I do statistical modeling in industry, I was looking for a good book on Logistic regression that would give me a deep understanding of the subject; one that also had wide coverage (Poison regression, Tobit models, ..etc.). I decided on J. Scott Long's book, after considering Applied Logistic Regression by Hosmer and Lemeshow, and Limited Dependent and Qualitative Variables in Econometrics by Maddala. I must say I am very pleased with my choice. The topics are very clear, and the math is used as an aid to understanding, and you don't get bogged down in the math. It is a pleasure to read the book.
Most intuitive book on the subject.......2001-08-24
This book is especially useful to start understanding topics like ordered probit, multinomial logit, negative binomial regression and zero-inflated count models. Although it starts with a chapter on the linear regression model, it should not be mistaken for an introductory text. I would certainly advise readers with limited background in regression models to start with other books, like the one of Wooldridge (Introductory Econometrics). The quality of this book must be that I've yet to see a book that explains these topics more intuitively. That is not to say it is easy or without mathematics, it's not. It just looks like the mathematics is only used for better comprehension, not to give you the full proof. Furthermore, while reading it you get the feeling that the author understands what you, as a researcher, are interested in. This allows him to focus on the topics of interest, like model selection and testing and interpretation of output. So although this is not a cookbook, it may well be the closest thing to it, especially in combination with his new book on applying these models in Stata (only available at Stata). It is a pity that the author stops short of non-parametric models (next edition?).

At first glance, you may think that Nealy isn't serious about teaching riding skills. The hand-printed pages--colored with hilarious animations--give the guide a comic-book appearance. But instead of assaulting his readers with dry chapters on technique, Nealy leads his readers on an entertaining tour of the mountain-biking world and how to survive it. He explains how to bunny hop, how to downhill, how to ride powerfully, and how to crash with style. He also includes a "Stupid Bike Tricks" section. One trick, The Invisible Mountain Biker, explains how to jump off of your bike and let it glide, unmanned, across the path of frightened hikers. Note that Nealy advises against heaving your bike into a crowd of hikers. Existing laws prohibit it.
Whether you're a pro who's ready to soar through flaming hoops, or the neophyte who's merely searching for the pedals, Nealy's guide is bound to be fun--and isn't that what mountain biking is all about? --Ben Tiffany
Book Description
If you’re looking for the ultimate mountain bike guide for the totally honed, welcome to William (Not Bill) Nealy’s world. Nealy’s expertise (acquired through years of crash and burn) enables him to translate hard-learned reflexes and instinctive responses into easy-to-understand drawings: drawings that will make you a much better rider. Nealy’s cartoon illustrations combine insight with humor and knowledge with humiliation. So, if you are ready to shorten the learning curve and master the advanced techniques of mountain biking, get ready to have some laughs and log a few miles with William Nealy.

This is still what mountain biking is about.......2007-01-28
This book will never be dated. It captures the essence of what mountain biking is about. You ride for fun - not for getting the teeny-weenie details just right with the clip of today.
I read this book every time I'm depressed or out with an injury - which means 5-6 times a year :-)
It is still so much fun and the best MTB book ever drawn (and written). If you don't fall in love with this book - go ride on the roads!
Kids book.......2006-02-26
Personally I found the style of this book irritating. Its 100% hand written text and cartoons, which don't provide a lot of detail and the jokes were lame. The information is not incorrect - I just found it didn't have enough detail to replicate the moves. And its old... eg, the importantance of pedals with toe clips! Best left for the kids
Funny with Great illustrations and Information!.......2005-10-26
Love this book! It's a classic. I have bought it for many friends when they buy their first mountain bike.
It is massively entertaining as well as very informative.
No boring, long winded explainations, just great illustrations and brief text. Both will make you laugh out loud as well as teach you a great deal.
Even if you've been mountain biking for 20 years, you will love this book.
Rod C. from Long Island, NY... but don't hold that against me!
Are you Kidding?!.......2004-09-14
If you only have one book in your personal mtn bike library, this is the one. Funny! Interesting! Great illustrations! Originally purchased back in the old school days of the sport and is still the number one to have, mine is on the coffee table...and another copy in the office...
The most interesting technical book I've ever read!!!.......2004-08-01
Wish every sport had a Neally writing manuals! This is a very enjoyable reading, that takes you through very serious matters like a comic book. It is saving me months of trying to squeeze these riding "secrets" from my expert friends.

Customer Reviews:
an amazing book.......2007-01-16
It's a great book. I didn't get a chance to read it all through but I did read a few of the techiques and used them on my boyfriend. We live 700 miles away from each other and he was amazed at the different things I did to him. Just can't wait to finish the book and try everything techique there is on him.
Pagan Philosophy 101.......2006-04-18
I bought this book as a gift for my spouse. Notice I said "spouse". Sex is made to be enjoyed within the bond of marriage, I do not condemn any sex enjoyed within that loving relationship. It is a pure and holy union instituted by God.
My biggest problem with this book is something that none of the other reviewers really mentioned. Not only does the author include a couple stories and references to her and her friends' lovers, but she inundates the reader with idolatry. This author's beliefs revolve around "gods and goddesses". She constantly talks about sex altars, statues of gods and goddesses, icons and pagan history. She makes statements about penis worship, ceremonies and invoking the spirit of gods and goddesses. This is sick and twisted, it cetainly is not what I had hoped for. There may be some okay ideas in here, but there are plenty of other books that do not lead us down the wrong road just because we are interested in achieving better physical intimacy with our husbands or wives.
The other part is that the author assumes that the reader enjoys reading curses. Why should people relate loving sex with idol worship and immorality?
This book takes a great thing, sex, and twists it into something that many people will not want to read about. If you are looking for a good book about this subject, I recommend looking elsewhere. Hopefully, this review has helped you make that choice.
Exciting yet difficult.......2005-10-08
I ordered the book and was so excited to see all the different positions one can do with their partner. Most of the positions are the same, maybe a leg move or an arm in a different position, but otherwise the book is alright.
Some of the positions in the book are difficult to accomplish. You have to be either flexible, slim, or your man has to be packing in the genital department to accomplish some of these positions.
Otherwise, it was great just experimenting and having fun with your partner. Women will read the book and understand what's going on here. Men would be more like, "I don't care where I have to put my leg to feel a different sensation, is it in or not?" That's funny. It's a good book, it's fun to read and exciting to try.
worth reading.......2005-09-23
fun ideas, organized into fun chapters. excellent names for the techniques (which, in my opinion, is part of the fun!). worthy compilation - buy a copy for all your timid friends.
Some good inspiration..........2005-01-11
While the book provides some really great inspiration and ideas to add to your sexual repertoire, some of the way-too-many synonyms and descriptive words used for male and female anatomy provided not only giggles, but enough adjectives for 8 or 9 romance novels.. Honestly, "Love Rocket, Shivering Member, Celestial Dragon, Healing / Royal Sceptor, Magic Wand, Warrior Weapon, Love Organ, Cobra, Stalk, Untamed Animal..." to list a few.
Definitely a book worth reading and referring back to for those in stagnant relationships needing a sexual boost - or even those new to sexual relationships...

Review of LabVIEW Advanced Programming Techniques.......2007-05-14
Very good book I would recommend to Labview programmers who have taken or are about to take the LV Intermediate courses. The early chapters give a concise, but thorough definition of all the key Labview programming structures. Chapter 3 on state machines gave ideas on how to greatly expand the capabilities of a state machine by using an event matrix. Later chapters get into some of the mechanics of activeX and .net. It also discusses using object oriented techniques in Labview. Only problems I had were some block diagram pictures were missing some of their lines, and the examples on the attached CD were based on a much older version of Labview. However, these issues were minor and I would highly recommend the book.
good starting point for google.......2004-08-18
First off, about first 60 pages are wasted with a very introductory description of the various Labview palettes. So you'd think it's a newbie friendly book... Forget it ..Later on, it presents interesting tricks but you got to be really advanced yourself to "get it". Not quite the "step by step" other referals praise so much. But I admit, the tricks are neat, and if you're beyond the basics and good enough to think about architecting large projects, I would highly recommend the book.
Good Book if You're Beyond Basics.......2001-08-09
I've been programming for about two years. Most of my training in Labview is by trial-and-error and reading the examples that came with Labview. I've written over 3 dozen programs for my present employer.
As for books, I have many of them. This book in particular, is aimed to the advanced user. Don't expect to learn how to write programs with this book. For a graphical programming language, this book has very little graphics or pictures.
What you can expect is to hone your applications so that they are easier for the end user, easier to maintain and separates `working' VIs from `expert' VI. Many little tricks in this book (such as setting preferences, using state machines, and yes, Active X) will make your applications run faster with less overhead.
If you're looking for a book to show you more programming techniques, with actual examples, I'd opt for Essick's "Advanced LabVIEW Labs" (an intermediate book) or Johnson's "LabVIEW Graphical Programming" (more advanced). If you're looking for ways to separate yourself from programmers that make `working' VIs, then this book by Bitter et al. is for you.
Great info on several topics.......2001-05-07
This is an excellent intro into some of the advanced features of LV. It covers basic features, state machines (one of the best chapters), application structure, drivers, exception handling, multithreading, OOP, and unfortunately Active X (chpaters to skip). The info is excellent, and I think it is well worth the cost and time to read. It also comes with a great CD.
The only bad part is more than 20% of the book is devited to Active X. This is a huge kick in the pants to platform independence. While I am working on NT (by force, not by choice) I try to avoid any technonogy that supports ... you know, the M word.
An excellent book for advanced LabVIEW users.......2000-09-01
An excellent book for LabVIEW program designers and programmers! Especially for LabVIEW users with several years experience and try to learn more new software techniques. The authors introduced many concepts and techniques in C/C++ such as ActiveX, COM, DCOM etc. The OOA, OOD and design pattern are also combined with LabVIEW programming. There are many useful examples in the book. I recommend this book to all LabVIEW users.

Customer Reviews:
Simply simplistic!.......2007-08-25
There are a billion ways you can go when you start up After Effects. It's wonderful to know that once I generate the ideas of what I want to do but don't know how to pull them off, all I have to do is find the tutorial for it and "Genius!" I've learned them and am able to modify them in any direction I want to go. Trish and Chris Meyer have a good handle on teaching, sometimes complex VFX maneuvers, in such easy to follow and understand terms. I highly recommend any of their books on this subject.
Semi-Advanced.......2007-01-29
This is another excellent After Effects guide that deserves to be in the library of any AE professional. However I was a little dissapointed with the contents. Being titled: Advanced Techniques, I expected to learn a lot of new techniques, but found most of the content was already well known by myself. I also found quite a lot of content was repeated in the other two After Effects books by the Meyers.
This is still an excellent book to have as a reference, and there are some great topics covered. It's very well written like the other books, and I don't regret the purchase at all. My complaints are probably mostly due to the fact I have learnt quite a bit since finishing the first book, for people who have finished the first book and want to learn more this would be perfect. But advanced users should perhaps look at After Effects 7 Studio Techniques which has more advanced content.
Be Warned, this book is for version 5.5.......2005-12-25
This book only to find out it's for version 5.5... Not a cheap book, as I already have purchased it.
Creating Motion Graphics with After Effects, Vol. 2: Advanced Techniques (3rd Edition, Version 6.5) .......2005-09-15
If you are a novice make sure you get Vol. 1 it is really great. I bought volume two because I learned so much from volume one and what a great AE reference book to have sitting on you shelf. Whenever I have a question the book has an example that I can apply to my project.
