Book Description

Bestselling photography author Lee Frost turns his attention to black and white photography, and demonstrates how it is possible to make beautiful black and white images and fine prints with the minimum of fuss.

Black and white photography has a reputation for being something of an esoteric art requiring lots of expensive equipment and an encyclopaedic knowledge of complex techniques. But here Lee Frost dispels this myth, and proves that it can be the most simple, expressive and rewarding medium. The book covers all the essential techniques of black and white photography from what equipment to use through to the finer points of printing and toning, thereby demonstrating how Lee Frost creates his own breathtaking photographs, and how you can too.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best B&W photo books I've read........2007-08-29

I've been into b&w photography for a little while now, and lately I've been doing a lot of reading on the subject. This is without a doubt one of best books I've read so far. I'm already familiar with all of the technical aspects of photography, and those are all explained in the book (except for the zone system, which Frost clearly states at the beginning he doesn't use). Along with all of the technical stuff, Frost also explains his creative techniques. I can't say I learned much of that technical stuff (I already knew it all. I'm sure a beginner could learn a ton), but it did open my eyes to take a much more creative approach on photography than I had previously taken. Also in the book that's great is a chapter on lith printing and using liquid emulsion. Along with all of the information are pictures taken by Frost with captions that explain anything relevant to the chapter. This book is a great read for anyone who wants to improve their photography skills.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect book for beginners and pros alike.......2004-05-26

This is by far the best black and white photo technique book I have read. I am a pro photographer and always keep a huge collection of how to books and monographs for looking up styles and new ideas.
Lee Frost is a very down to earth photographer that really takes what he loves to heart. He preaches that it is not all the little technical things that people and teachers say you need to know that make good photographs, its your own imagination and creativity.
This is the perfect thing to say for a true artist. Lee Frost gives us his own examples of basic photo techniques and then shows us how easy it is to make a beautiful fine art photograph with simple household products and a NON pro camera set up. Of course, he does state that having good equipment will always help, but it is not always needed as so many say.
Just think of the world famous photographer David Hamilton, who only used one 35mm camera, one lense, only natural light, and no filters. It doesnt get much more basic than that, and he is bowed down to by thousands.
Lee Frost has the same idea, and it is very asuring knowing that you dont need to go out and spend thousands to be a pro.
Again, I believe that this is the best how to and reference guide on the market today. Get it.

4 out of 5 stars Good but not brilliant!!.......2004-05-25

Ive always enjoyed Lee Frost's past endeavours in the written field but this one didnt quite get up there in my expectations. This is still a very good book for intermediate photographers but perhaps not quite as gritty as I had hoped for. Enjoyable nonetheless.

British photographer Barry Thornton has spent a lifetime devoted to black and white photography. He shares his warehouse of technical savvy in Edge of Darkness: The Art, Craft, and Power of the High-Definition Monochrome Photograph. If you have at least a working knowledge of basic photography, then you'll find this book to be full of helpful advice. Thornton has an immense amount of how-to wisdom and covers topics including focusing, lighting, tripods, printing, and much more. It is a precise book with incredible attention to detail.

The wealth of informative tips are illustrated with Thornton's photographs. Beautiful and rich landscapes so varied and full of depth that they create their own universe of monochromatic color. A stunning torrent of water crisp enough to be a cascade of crystal beads. Close-ups that feel like they were shot through a magnifying glass. Many students of photography see black and white pictures as a mere step on the way to the wonderful world of color. Thornton, on the other hand, reveres the traditions and possibilities of this medium and reveals monochromatic pictures to be a pinnacle of photography. This serious manual is a sure way to improve a burgeoning photographer's technical expertise. The book has 200 black-and-white illustrations. --J.P. Cohen

3 out of 5 stars Sharply done; might be more stars for you.......2007-08-03

The author's holy grail is sharpness, real and perceived. Type of film, type of developer, type of tripod and camera format, all slanted towards crisp and sharp photos. Nothing about tonality really: There are comparative photos only to show a difference in sharpness, except for a couple at the end showing bleaching techniques.
A good book for someone who takes architecture or landscape photos (with the requisite time to set up) and who also likes to noodle with their own developers.
The author's use of anecdotal stories to begin each chapter is a nice touch.

5 out of 5 stars A must for anyone interested in B&W.......2006-03-04

Probably one of the best books on B&W processing I've read in the past 20 years. Too bad the first one published by B.Thornton "Elements" is no longer available. Thornton takes on one myth after another and clearly separates truth from myth in the B&W process flow in the darkroom. Just outstanding reading.... highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The sort of book we need more of.......2005-10-18

What a delightful book! Once you've mastered Adam's beautiful books and the other books about serious zone system work this is the sort of book you hope for. Part memoir, part advanced how-to, and part philosophy put to paper in a delightful prose style.
Not exactly for beginners -- the author assumes you know the zone system and are serious about doing your own darkroom work. It also doesn't hurt to have read Anchell's Film Developing Cookbook and the Book of Pyro but not needed. The photos in the book are beautifully printed and yet the cost is reasonable. I hope this publisher will continue in this vein.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific read..........2004-09-09

The photography I admit , is not brilliant or inspiring but the information contained in the text is excellent. This book is more for someone who already has a limited amount of knowledge og b&w photography. Excellent in depth information...one of only a few books on this subject worth reading.

3 out of 5 stars Good...but not great... IMHO.......2004-03-18

The photos range in quality from very nice, to rather bland.

The information is often interesting, sometimes quite useful, but occasionally he writes lots about a technical issues which are not important. Some of the text might have been better left out or put into an appendix.

Thornton's commentary on the personal stories behind his photographs are sometimes sweet, but I have to admit that I occasionally felt like it was more information than I wanted. Every now and than I got the feeling he was trying to make a rather boring image seem more interesting by giving the story behind the photo.

    4 out of 5 stars A Sleeper!.......2004-07-31

I ordered this book sight unseen after viewing some of Mr. Spada's photographs on a website. I didn't know that the author of celebrity biographies was also a photographer-- and a very good one as evidenced in this collection of black and white men. Mr. Spada has a fine sense of composition and understands the importance of lighting to enhance the human body. Many of these photographs were shot using available light, which often makes for beautifully flattering studies.

Some of these photographs work better than others. I like in particular: (1) The torso on page 5. The stripes from the towel repeated in the shadows from the vertical blinds work very well to produce a beautiful photograph. (2) It's difficult to make a bad photograph using a mirror. Check out the portrait on page 14. (3) The man with a shaved head shot from the rear (page 24) exudes strength. (4) The photo on page 39 is quite sexy. (5) "Paul in my studio, Brookline, July 1998", (page 41) is artfully composed with good use of the black background. I would not have included the shots of the man holding tulips (pp. 76-77). Everybody and his brother have done that one already. These photos add nothing to the pictures already out there.

Finally, Mr. Spada is to be commended for selecting several young men who look as if they might have a life outside a gym. They have attractive bodies by God rather than by Gold. Few photographers doing nudes these days have the courage to do such a thing.

    5 out of 5 stars John L. Draper.......2001-10-24

I have been a professional painter and photographer since 1970. The beautiful lighting and composition of the images in the book far outclass my abilities as an artist. Mr Spada's work will be an inspitation to people far beyond our own time period.

5 out of 5 stars Rave Reviews for "Black & White Men".......2001-10-22

As the photographer whose work is compiled in this book, I'd like to share with you some of the critical praise the book as received, since Amazon only allows 20-word excerpts! Here is a sampling:

"Spada's work is a paean to male beauty, with the same appreciation seen in classical Greek art. But his compositions have an intimacy and sexuality that is lacking in most classical art. ...Spada has selected models with a great deal of charm... It is an admirable and attractive entry on his list of accomplishments, and a beautiful gift for the connoisseur of masculine beauty, from an author who is incredibly prolific."

    Stephen Moser, Austin Texas Chronicle

"Black and White Men represents an unusually high level of artistic and technical quality. . . The book is unquestionably a
sensual one, but not overtly sexual. Spada handles his subjects here with the same care, diligence, respect and detail as if he were writing about them.Another aspect of Jim's photos that makes them unique among most photographers of the male image is the exquisite interplay of light and shadow. Computer scans do not do these photos justice in this regard. He uses soft, almost hazy, lighting to convey the tender and sensual side of masculinity while using bolder lighting and lines to show men's strength and power. He has been compared to a young Mapplethorpe, but I find that a more apt comparison is to George Platt Lynes, still one of the greatest photographers of the 20th century."

    --Bill Brownell, max4men.com

"James Spada gives us a diverse and delectable feast of the male form in its intimate state. Make no mistake: what Spada does isn't standard beefcake -- it is instead sensitive, dramatic and strong. It is utterly male without bravado or trite machismo posturing; each portrait is candid in its view, but perfectly crafted in its art. Spada's work truly merges the intimate erotic with a classical art sensibility."

    --Heather Corinna, ScarletLetters.com

"Black & White Men is a wonderful book, and an essential text for anyone who appreciates the male art form. It opens a new chapter in the professional life of one of our favorite and most enduring artists."

    --Jesse Monteagudo, Bay Windows, Boston

"Spada captures the natural light as it casts shadows softly across naked bodies...which results in a nonchalant and intimate eroticism. One gets the feeling Spada is being truly honest with his portraits, which makes this collection a must-have for any photography connoisseur."

    --Instinct Magazine

Thanks for reading. This book has been nominated for a Lambda Literary Award and an Independent Publishers Award as one of the best photography books of 2000. I hope you'll give it a try! ....

1 out of 5 stars Amature Photo Quality.......2001-09-07

I was given a free copy of this book from a local bookstore. I was SHOCKED to see how highly the book was rated. The photos have amature composition and lighting techniques. If you're looking for artistic photos - keep looking becuase this book does not have them!

    4 out of 5 stars Now a Renowned Photographer!.......2000-12-08

James Spada is the author of sixteen books which include biographies of famous stars, and pictorial biographies ("Life in Pictures" ) of famous people that have made him world renowned. He has now turned his creativity to photographing the nude male. "Black & White Men" is his latest collection of photos, and it is exactly what it claims to be, black & white shots of young good-looking male models posed in very erotic and sensual poses. Spada captures natural light as it casts moody shadows on these well-developed bodies. Shane was my favorite model. I guess that's why he was made the cover model, someone felt the same way I did. You can tell James Spada has a relaxed and good relationship with his models, they all seem so at ease and uninhibited.

This book is over 90 pages, and that's my only regret. I just wish it could have been a more extensive selection of his images. I would recommend this collection of 60 images to anyone who enjoys male nude photography from a inspiring new photographer.!

5 out of 5 stars Finally a Great Book on Photographing Children.......2007-06-17

Cheryl Machat's sensitivity and unique perspective are wonderfully apparent in this collection of photography lessons. This book is from an artist for an artist. Machat, with technical perfection and a soft heart, sees kids. The pictures are raw and the children are real. This book may not appeal to the frightened beginner who wants/needs to doll-up kids, but parents and artist are going to love it. Check out her work at Cherylmachatdorskind.com. Unbelievable!

2 out of 5 stars Just plain bad.......2006-08-19

I will admit that the text is not bad. There is some good advice on every aspect of photographing children. However, what is bad about this book is that the photographs are just horrible. Compositions are poor, lighting is poor, focus is poor. If you are looking to learn a lot about photographing children, you really won't from this book.

5 out of 5 stars A guide for amateur and professional photographers alike.......2005-03-13

The Art of Photographing Children: Techniques for Making Better Color, Black and White, Handcolored, and Digital Pictures is a no-nonsense guide for amateur and professional photographers alike. Chapters discuss optimum equipment, lighting, composition, and more, such as how to capture an important moment, and tips for running a smooth photo shoot. The easy-to-follow narration accompanies a wealth of black-and-white and color photographs that keenly illustrate points and principles discussed. Highly recommended for proud parents seeking to succinctly capture their child's milestones on film, family portrait experts striving to improve their craft, and every photographer in between.

    Book Description

Aptly called "painting with scissors," decou-page is the art of decorating a surface with cut-out paper images, as beautifully documented in this overflowing archive of popular decoupage subjects. The book opens with a brief history of the craft and provides concise instructions for cutting out motifs, coloring black-and-white prints, preparing surfaces, gluing, varnishing, and sanding. Then a dazzling collection of more than a thousand prints provides animals, bows and ribbons, cherubs and cupids, flowers, fruits, and vegetables, shells and marine life, sporting images, and numerous borders and background patterns. The color pages are printed on one side so that all of the images can be used; because they can be photocopied easily, the black-and-white pages are printed on both sides.

3 out of 5 stars decoupage designs to copy or cut out.......2007-02-14

This was the first decoupage pattern book I ordered. It has lots of designs, so everyone is bound to find ones they like. Although a fair amount of the patterns are ones I will not use, I still feel like I got my "money's worth". Also, that is a matter of taste - the publication delivers exactly what it advertises and I think most people would like the designs more than I do (my tastes are a bit non-traditional).

This is a really great book to have. The pictures are beautiful and there are lots of little elements tucked away on each page that makes the book even more useful. In addition to all the other excellent prints, the authors have also included the prints that were used for the items in their photographs.

I have made the soldier book-ends. The directions were very easy to follow. My wife is now working on the Christmas decorations.

Many thanks to Davis and Cooper for a wonderful book!

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Presentation!!.......2003-07-15

This was a great book! The presentation and abundance of prints is excellent. I have been playing with decoupage for some time and I found that this book has inspired me to do more and more. I found the collection of prints very helpful in both planning and enticing new projects out of me. The variety of prints and the clear and precise information would be helpful to anyone working in decoupage or just beginning.

This author has really given me the additional boost I needed! Thanks Dee for a great book and your good work. I look forward to more!

5 out of 5 stars Great, usable prints!.......2003-03-06

I have bought a lot of prints in my time decoupaging and I have to say that someone has finally done this right! I love this book. I have used tons of the prints (there is a terrific selection) and have made some really beautiful pieces.

The format is clear and easy to use, good for beginners or for more experienced people. There is a wide variety of material so that if you don't like one theme, there isn't too much of it.

I hope there is a second volume on the way soon b/c I am almost out of inspiration!

      Book Description

Daido Moriyama, who was born near Osaka in 1938, is one of the most influential representatives of contemporary Japanese photography. His unmistakable style, influenced by the work of Weegee, William Klein and Andy Warhol, has been evolving since the 1970s. His images, often made with a small, hand-held camera, draw viewers in with their diffuse, suggestive layers of gray. Moriyama is aptly characterized as a "hunter of light," and his preference for the atmospheric and enigmatic leads to beautiful abstractions of the Japanese urban landscapes. Shinjuku 19XX-20XX features previously unpublished photographs taken in the Tokyo district of Shinjuku, whose labyrinthine streets and dark eddies have always drawn Moriyama in. He says of the district, "Even though it wasn't a town that I liked because I wanted to like it, or became obsessed with because I wanted to be obsessed with it, the town of Shinjuku has a strange narcotic effect, and there is something about it that traps me and puts me under a spell."

      Book Description

Foreword by Adam Gopnik. Levitt's new collection of personally-selected images, Here and There, a charming monograph featuring over ninety never-before-published photographs, including portraits of her friends James Agee and Walker Evans. The recently discovered photographs featured in Here And There represent Levitt's own favorite images selected from her immense private collection. Shot over seven decades, Here And There reveals Levitt's acute sense of how cosmetically street life has changed - and how substantially it has remained the same. The sheer determination of this inimitable photographer to walk the streets of her beloved city for this length of time and take pictures of what she sees reaffirms her unofficial status as New York City's visual poet laureate.

      New York's Photographer

Helen Levitt, born in Brooklyn in 1913, took up photography when she found she couldn't draw. For seventy years. she took her cameras down the New York streets where tourists seldom wander. She photographed janitors, children, pushcarts, subway riders, and dogs.

Crosstown (Powerhouse Books, 192 pages, $75), a collection of many of her best pictures, became an instant classic when it was published in 2001. Now her publisher has followed up with the less imposing, less expensive, but equally remarkable Here and There (Powerhouse Books,120 pages, $40). It's a selection of 120 black-and-white photographs, also taken mostly in New York City. The book is graced with an especially perceptive foreword by New Yorker critic Adam Gopnik.

Yorkville. Spanish Harlem. The Lower East Side. Levitt's people abide in a landscape without foliage: a desert of sidewalks, store fronts, and empty lots. Their lives slide by unnoticed, unpraised. Yet their faces are maps of emotional nuance. There's half a boy and half a man under that fedora. You would not want to mess with that moving man in the middle of the trio. Note the nearly penitent posture on that big guy in his undershirt getting the word from that tiny little dog.

There is not a single picture here that has much of real interest "going on." Yet everything's going on, all around, all the time, here and there. Levitt possesses that rarest of gifts, an original temperament. The artist who look these pictures knows the world will always be full of dead cats and kids bawling their eyes out. She also knows how gratifying its daily illuminations can be.

Levitt requires neither celebrity nor flamboyance (much less decadence) to give us portraits as emotionally complex as drawings by Durer or Rembrandt. In this sense, she is the quiet opposite of every superstar New York photographer from Avedon to Warhol.

And as anyone who has lived there knows, these are authentic New Yorkers. They may be invisible to the crowds uptown, but what pride there is in that profile, what resignation sulks in those eyes, what mischief electrifies that grin.

It's as though each of Levitt's pictures had its own wire that plugged directly into a tiny but precise aspect of the human condition. Her skill with her Leica is such that we are made to stand in her sensible shoes, to see through her comprehending eyes. And so we are transported to a spot in the sidewalk across from a building that was torn down forty years ago. And it's more real than anything in Vanity Fair.

Levitt's pictures send a message to serious photographers. "You don't have to get outside your own life," they assure us. "All the material you can handle is right down the street."

      Book Description

Robert Frank is one of the most influential of all post-war photographers. Pioneering a revolutionary approach to photography and filmmaking, he combines autobiographical and poetic elements to produce straight black-and-white images that transcend the specific. Speaking of universal experience, Frank has said, "I'm trying to forget easy photo, trying to make something from within." He adds, "Time moves on and never stops or waits." Often involving a progression through a series of images, his work is structured like a musical sequence, creating storylines that resonate beyond the frozen moment of any single photograph. Storylines accompanies an exhibition highlighting Frank's experimental use of narrative in photography and film. The exhibition consists of his films and photographs, including Polaroids, contact sheets, and recent digital stills. Photographs from locations as diverse as Peru, London, Wales, Coney Island, and Chicago, appear along with several artist's books.

In this book, Frank photographically explores America and Europe from 1950-2003. The book is limited in text but reads as almost a journal of Franks travels. The cities he chooses to highlight feature black and white photographs that give insight into Frank's perspective on the city. Frank covers the hazy streets of London with petty coats and top hats to soot covered coal miners of Whales to the commercialized America filled with advertisements and coffee shops. Franks photography is silent as he captures people in their element. No posed glamour shots or sun kissed landscapes, but real people in their everyday environment.
Frank's photographic style is almost documentary in respect. His photographs seem as almost proof of his whereabouts rather than an art form. Every page is filled with candid pictures like the factory workers in Detroit or the 1956 Chicago Democratic Convention. Each picture alone is not anything out of the ordinary but when bound together in a book, it becomes extraordinary.

This book is not hardcover (although it is not exactly typical softcover either). Instead, it has a flexible, durable plastic cover that seems pretty unique. The book itself is a catalog from the current Robert Frank exhibit at the Tate in London, but Frank himself helped put it together and you can tell. I think it is his most exciting book in years, probably since "The Lines of My Hand," although "Moving Out" was very comprehensive. If you are already a Robert Frank fan, I suspect you will NOT be disappointed by "Storylines." If you don't know who he is, check out "The Americans" first because that is his most important book, followed by "Lines of My Hand." I've never seen a good many of the images in "Storylines" before, and I've been absorbing everything I could of Robert Frank's work since 1987, so this is a worthwhile addition to my collection.

        Book Description

Georgia O'Keeffe / John Loengard: Paintings and Photographs

In June 1966, photographer John Loengard was asked by Life magazine to photograph Georgia O'Keeffe in New Mexico, where she had been living since the late 1930s. Georgia O'Keeffe was 79 years old at the time, Loengard was 32, and for three days he observed and photographed the private life of this pioneer artist who virtually redefined American painting. For this unique book, we selected almost fifty of the finest black-and-white pictures Loengard took of the grand, solitary woman in the desert, and juxtaposed them with selected paintings of hers. They record the course of a day in the life of Georgia O'Keeffe from sunrise to sunset, developing their own quiet, mysterious effect. It becomes clear how much the austere poetry of the landscape corresponded to the artist's own self-created world and how her artistic imagination was kindled by bleached bones and an infinite desert.
