Climbing Mount Everest: dangerous. Hitchhiking in Colombia: very dangerous. Leading through change: perilous. Perilous but possible, say Heifetz and Linsky in their encouragingly practical guide to putting yourself on the line and negotiating the hazards of leadership. As the authors acknowledge, many leadership books are "all about inspiration, but downplay the perspiration." This one doesn't. Leadership is always a risky business, but those risks can be understood and reduced. Effective leadership comes from doing more than the technical work of routine management; it involves adaptive work on the part of the leader, and a willingness to confront and disturb people, promote their resourcefulness, and engage their ability to adjust to new realities. But adaptive change always encounters resistance. Heifetz and Linsky examine four forms of resistance--marginalization, diversion, attack, and seduction--before presenting a number of practical resistance-response skills to nurture and employ. Some are fairly obvious (like developing and maintaining perspective, and holding steady in the midst of change), and others more complex (like thinking politically when dealing with friends, foes, and fence sitters), but shimmering nuggets of insight and practical wisdom can be found in each. The dangers of leadership also spring from within, however, and the book's final section addresses ways to recognize and manage competing "hungers" and learn to distinguish one's roles from one's self. The authors' points are illustrated by the experiences of leaders from all walks of life, making this a useful and inspiring manual for anyone hoping to put themselves on the line and make a difference in the lives of others. --S. Ketchum
Book Description
Every day, in every facet of our lives, opportunities to lead call out to us. At work and at home, in our local communities and in the global village, the chance to make a difference beckons. Yet often, we hesitate. For all its passion and promise, for all its excitement and rewards, leading is risky, dangerous work.
Why? Because real leadership-the kind that surfaces conflict, challenges long-held beliefs, and demands new ways of doing things-causes pain. And when people feel threatened, they take aim at the person pushing for change. As a result, leaders often get hurt both personally and professionally.
In Leadership on the Line, renowned leadership authorities Ronald A. Heifetz and Marty Linsky marshal a half century of combined teaching and consulting experience to show that it is possible to put ourselves on the line, respond effectively to the risks, and live to celebrate our efforts. With compelling examples including the presidents of countries and the presidents of organizations, everyday managers and prominent activists, politicians and parents, the authors illustrate proven strategies for surviving and thriving amidst the dangers of leading:
· "Getting on the balcony": stepping back to get perspective while remaining fiercely engaged
· "Thinking politically": keeping the opposition close, but watching your allies, too
· "Orchestrating the conflict": using stress productively to work the issues
· "Giving the work back": putting the responsibility on those who need to make the change
· "Holding steady": maintaining your focus while taking the heat
The authors also address often-neglected aspects of leadership, such as how to manage your personal vulnerabilities, and how to anchor yourself and sustain your spirit through tough times.
Both uplifting and practical, this essential book enables each of us to lead courageously and confidently-without losing ourselves.
AUTHORBIO:
Ronald A. Heifetz and
Marty Linsky are on the faculty at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Heifetz is the author of Leadership Without Easy Answers and Co-director of the school's Center for Public Leadership. Linsky is Faculty Chair of many of the school's executive programs, including Senior Officials in State and Local Government and Leadership for the 21st Century.

Not a bad choice!!.......2007-10-01
This book is an easy read. It does have some real practical ways that its "messages" can be used by leaders. There are many quality quotes and ideas that can be put into place ASAP in your organization.
Leadership on the Line.......2007-09-13
I found the book insightful and enjoyable to read. It gave options for handling business issues that affect a person's leadership credibilty. The examples were clear and related to well known leaders through out history and present day servers of the governnent and service organizations. I would recommend this book to all business people and take charge leaders.
May this book help you survive long enough to do some good.......2007-03-30
Most companies, most organizations are run by managers. They don't really lead to a new and different future, they instead try to manage the business as they found it. Their main concern is this quarter. Next quarter is long range planning. And the quarter after that so far into the future as to not be worth considering.
Perhaps the best examples right now are the American automobile companies. We've known since the first embargo, since the publication of Hubbard's Peak on oil production that we need more efficient cars. So for quarter after quarter they concentrated on full size SUV's and Pickup trucks. Not even a background level effort on getting a hybrid, a 40 mile per gallon car ready to produce.
This book closes with the need for real leaders. We, our country, our world face difficult times requiring fundamental changes in areas like energy, terrorism, global warming and more. We need leaders -- political, religious, and business leaders. As the book ends: 'May you enjoy with a full heart the fruits of your labor. The world needs you.'
Maybe this book can help you survive long enough to do some good.
Solid and earnest advice for passion in leadership.......2006-12-24
"Leadership on the Line: Staying Alive Through the Dangers of Leading" by Ronald A. Heifetz and Marty Linsky is an unconventional leadership book. Forsaking formulas, Heifetz and Linsky explore the human dimensions of leadership. Through numerous examples drawn from their teaching and consulting work, the authors tell the reader - really implore the reader - to appreciate the fullness of leadership and its impact on others.
The authors' examples and personal philosophy is on the liberal-left side, but much of their advice appears solid and earnest. The challenge for any person reading their book is how to put into practice what the authors suggest. I believe that without at least a few people to whom a leader can turn for counsel, the authors' call to leadership greatness will be forgotten not long after finishing the book.
The book's closing paragraph provides a good summary of the preceding 235 pages:
"Opportunities for leadership are available to you, and to us, every day. But putting yourself on the line is difficult work, for the dangers are real. Yet the work has nobility and the benefits, for you and for those around you, are beyond measure. We have written this book out of admiration and respect for you and your passion. We hope that the words on these pages have provided both practical advice and inspiration; and that you have better means now to lead, protect yourself, and keep your spirit alive. May you enjoy with a full heart the fruits of your labor. The world needs you."
Excellent.......2006-11-06
If you are looking for a book on leadership, this is one to add to your collection. I had trouble putting the book down at times. The book is very well written and I would highly suggest it to anyone. If you have read books on leadership before, you will place this one at the top of your list.

People joke that the start of a couple's marriage means the end of their sex life. David Schnarch, a sex therapist praised by Pepper Schwartz, uses epiphany-laden conversations taken directly from his own marriage and the married couples he sees in practice to help readers defy the myth that marriages are necessarily passionless, and instead prove that the longer a couple has been together, the higher the fireworks can fly. It's especially aimed at older couples who, Schnarch says, are self-actualized and therefore better able to handle intimacy than younger partners. "People have difficulty with intimacy because they're supposed to," he says, and goes on in this inspiring book to combine elements of marriage therapy and sex therapy to bring plenty of practical, fresh ideas to the crowd of mostly vapid relationship books. (Note that despite its title, it's for any emotionally committed couple, not just married folks.)
Schnarch says that a man is more likely to let a relationship suffer in order to hold on to his sense of self, while a woman is more apt to let her identity suffer to help strengthen it. Schnarch gives explicit tips on how to alter this pattern, an essential step he calls "differentiation." He also explains why compromise isn't always the best route to take when conflicts arise. The couples profiled here deal with the usual suspects: uneven sexual desire and initiation, battles about oral sex, self-image problems, the "boondoggle" of trust (both of one's self and one's partner), and the specter of divorce. Instead of focusing on each client's weaknesses, Schnarch teaches how to find inner strength and resilience that can be used to reaffirm a relationship and reignite sex. William H. Masters of Masters and Johnson fame calls this book "a classic," and no wonder. --Erica Jorgensen

Customer Reviews:
Helpful, but dense.......2007-09-26
The concepts of emotional fusion and differentiation were very helpful as were some of the recommended techniques for overcoming unhealthy dynamics of emotional fusion. The book certainly helped me understand the destructive dynamics of some of my relationships. Unfortunately, the writing is very, very dense and difficult to read. There's also a lot of unnecessary repetition. Overall, I would buy the book again but would also be more willing to skim all but the first 5 chapters.
Transformational.......2007-09-18
Was given a copy of PM from our family practice doc when I went in for severe marriage-related anxiety. Schnarch's focus on transforming ourselves into better people (and thus partners) rather than doling out techniques has completely changed my way of thinking about myself and my marriage. I know now that marital problems are the normal process by which we are forced to confront ourselves and improve over the course of our lives, rather than being things to avoid. Couldn't recommend this book more strongly.
Best Book on Relationships.... EVER.......2007-07-12
This book literally changed my life. I read A LOT and have read many self-help books. David Schnarch has a way of connecting with you right from the start and his real-life examples are a way of helping you to realize that every couple has issues to deal with.
I have recommended this book to so many friends for so many reasons and no one has been disappointed with it. As a matter of fact they are now recommending it to their friends. Don't miss out on a chance to make your marriage/life/relationship better and more fulfilling.
Ambiguous, disappointing.......2007-06-06
The key concepts of this guide to marriage are: 1. that low-desire and high-desire are equally valid, 2. that the low-desire partner controls what happens in the bedroom and, 3. that the high-desire partner has to become more "differentiated", able to "self-sooth" [masturbate?] and thus become emotionally detached from the other's behaviour.
Schnarch claims that almost every couple attending his workshops, subsequently enjoys more satisfying and more frequent sex. Yet, if the author were correct in his assertion that low-desire and high-desire are equally valid, a similar number of couples would have been satisfied with the status quo or with even less intimate, less frequent sex.
While Schnarch correctly states that the low-desire partner controls the bedroom, he fails to draw the obvious conclusion: That, if the low-desire partner is not interested in changing, not interested in taking steps towards a more satisfying relationship, the strategy for the high-desire partner may be to reverse roles by becoming the low-desire partner, thus taking control away from the low-desire partner.
For most high-desire partners, the only way to achieve this is to find fulfilment elsewhere, probably in the arms of another.
Hardly a recipe though, for "keeping love and intimacy alive in committed relationships."
In summary: While helping some couples towards a better marriage, this book fails to live up to its claim, that one partner can necessarily mend the relationship without cooperation from the other.
the best relationship book.......2007-06-05
This book is an essential book for couples and for therapists. What I got from reading this book was that the best thing couples can do for their relationship is to keep on growing as an individual and to develop the ability to self-soothe, and to manage the aggression in the relationship. People often have the notion that passion dies as the novelty wears off, but this book asserts that physical intimacy is actually most possible in relationships that are long-term, monogamous, and high in emotional intimacy. I like the openness, candor, and hopefulness in this book, and can't recommend it highly enough.

Book Description
There is a glory to life that most people-including believers-never see. In this insightful new book, John Eldredge presents the heart as central to life. Not only is the heart essential; the heart God has ransomed is also good. Building on these foundational truths, Eldredge shows readers why real Christianity is a process of restoration, where the broken parts of our hearts are mended and the captive parts are set free.
Waking the Dead leads listeners to understand how to live from the heart, care for their heart like the treasures of the kingdom, and give from fullness instead of emptiness. This message also shows how living from the heart can energize people to love God and others in a way they've never experienced, revealing to them life's purpose: fighting for the hearts of others.

Waking the Dead: The Glory of a Heart Fully Alive.......2007-08-09
This is one of my favorite all-time books. It is uplifting, encouraging, and a wonderful read. I have read it 3 times already, and look forward to going over it again. Every time I read it I get something new out of it. I have given many copies to friends and family, and recommended it to many others!
Awesome Book! Very Deep!.......2007-07-31
This book was really an eye opener. John Eldridge really hits on things that we all already know as Christ followers yet he puts things in perspective by using examples such as movies to make us aware that the glory of God is man fully alive!
A very deep book, I had to read a couple of chapters over again to get what Eldridge was saying, but I didn't mind at all because the chapters are short and it allows the reader to take in what Eldridge is trying to get across. "You are not what you think you are. There is a glory to your life that your Enemy (Satan) fears, and he is hell-bent on destroying that glory before you act on it." "The story of your life is the story of the long and brutal assault on your heart by the one who knows what you could be and fears it."
Warning! This book could change your life!.......2007-07-23
John Eldredge's "Waking the Dead" is both eye opening and soul changing. I've never heard or read this bilical perceptive and my heart was certainly ready to receive this wonderful message of God's love, hope and purpose for our lives while on earth. I'm buying extra copies soon to give to all of my friends and family!
Mandatory Read.......2007-07-23
Eye opening and crucial reading from John Eldridge. I have read Captivating, Journey of Desire, and Sacred Romance. I have loved them all, but this one is the best. I am recommending it to all my friends. The workbook that goes along with it enhances the experience and helps you to truly apply what you are learning to your life. I highly recommend you buy it!
Lifechanging.......2007-05-17
Respectfully, I simply don't care about all the 'analytical' criticism of John Eldredge, nor do I pay attention to all the overly legalistic slamming of his books. Simply put, God used this book and John to change many things in my life. I recommend this book as one of John's best! And a must read for those that are ready to step out beyond religiosity and into the "Kingdom" life that God wants us to abide in!

Book Description
No more punch lines that just slipped away. No more names on the tip of your tongue. No more senior moments! Drawing on cutting-edge neurological research, how to keep your brain alive: 83 neurobic exercises brings help to everyone whose memory is starting to slip. Devised by Dr. Lawrence Katz, a professor of neurobiology at Duke University Medical Center, and Manning Rubin, author of 60 Ways to Relieve Stress in 60 Seconds, here is a regimen of mental cross-training that can be done anywhere, by anyone, at any time of day. The premise is simple: When you exercise the brain, you release natural growth factors called neurotrophins, which in turn enhance the brain's level of fitness. And nothing so easily stimulates the brain as breaking routines and using the five senses in new and unexpected ways. So if you're right-handed, wake up tomorrow and brush your teeth with your left hand. Or close your eyes before you get into the car and then get the key into the ignition. Every time you open a new circuit in your brain, it's like doing a round of mental sit-ups, without the pain.

reminds me of the latest fad diet. The Complete Scarsdale Medical Diet: Plus Dr. Tarnower's Lifetime Keep-Slim Program
Taking advantage of an aging generation of baby boomers who worry
about their future is somewhat reprehensible.
In my psychology class we had to study
a case history of monkey's that psychologists gave ulcers by " shaking things up a bit".

so emulating them is probably very bad advise.
Point by point the book's prescriptions can be one for an early death

"Keep Your Brain Alive" offers some fairly standard advice on how to keep the mind agile as one ages. You've heard it before--be social, learn new things and new ways of doing routine tasks, use all the senses. The unique aspect of this particular book is the suggested exercises, but here the author veers away from the practical a little too strongly for my taste. He's big on exercising the sense of smell, and recommends driving around with a bunch of bottles with fragrance soaked pieces of sponge. Then uncork a particular one when you pass a specific place to fix it more firmly in your mind. I think if I did this my husband would begin having serious doubts about my state of mind--with good reason! I thought some suggestions could be dangerous, such as wandering around your home with lights off to activate the other senses--not a good idea for an older person, just as "uncork bottle while driving" is not a good idea. The scientific explanations are excellent--very clear and easy to understand--but I'd take the exercises with a big grain of salt!
Rip.......2007-02-14
I'm very disappointed with this book. It's based on fundamentally solid brain science and offers the following to strengthen your brain (i.e. build and activate new neural connections): "1. Involve one or more of your senses in a novel (new) context, 2. Break a routine activity in an unexpected, nontrivial way."
Basically, by breaking the routine and forcing yourself to learn new things or different ways of doing old things, new connections will develop within your brain and create thought processing and longevity benefits. If you're right-handed, start forcing yourself to use your left hand (I was taught this aspect almost 30 years ago). Take different routes to work. Start using other senses to take in data. You see a widget. You normally recognize it as such and move on. Here, it is suggested to pick it up, feel it, examine it, smell it, listen to it and more connections will develop. Go out and socialize. Nothing challenges the mind more than interacting with new people.
O.K. This is all good, valuable information. But the proceeding paragraph pretty much sums it up. The other 100 or so pages in this book are fluff, with examples of achieving novelty. This is appropriate for a magazine article, not a nine dollar book. In fact, it seems suspiciously similar to a recent Time article on brain science. Wow, this was churned out fast.

We would pop in a CD and listen to about 20-30 minutes of scripture each morning. We loved it! The musical background and change in voices of the characters keeps your attention while engaging you as if you were actually there in the setting. You won't be dissappointed if you purchase this product.

I definitely recommend the Bible Alive! I am in the car about two hours a day and now I can listen to the Word of God.

While Hendricks knows what it takes to teach effectively, I was disappointed with this book. If you are looking for a book to learn how to effectively communicate well with students, this book will be helpful. If you already have good communication skills and common sense in how to connect with students, you'll find this book to be mostly review without any exciting new insights. Please don't let this discredit Dr. Hendricks' other books. Make sure to purchase a copy of Living By the Book by Howard and William Hendricks.
My changed life.......2007-05-09
Dr. Hendricks is a master at taking a rather serious subject and making his book about it irresistible. From beginning to end, his wit and insight to the student made this book an easy read about a very challenging undertaking. I appreciated over and over again his reminiscent writing about when he was a boy and his perspective of teachers and likewise his students and how he interacted with them. This book is now invaluable to me as a teacher. Wish I had known about it sooner. It is worth the effort to discern a person's "learning curve" and engage them accordingly. It's worth the challenge, especially if you're teaching them about the Lord. Thank you, Dr. Hendricks.
Great information.......2007-02-12
I used this book as a training tool for Sunday School teachers in a small church. We found it to be excellent material. It is to the point and doesn't pull any punches about the fact the teaching is a committment. Should be required reading for everyone who wants to teach.
Basal Book from an Evangelical Icon.......2006-12-08
Howard Hendricks is something of a Conservative Evangelical icon, a teacher of teachers, who for more than forty years shaped the teaching ministries of students at Dallas Seminary. Regardless of what one might think of Dispensationalism, it is undeniable that Dallas Grads are formidable teachers. More than any other figure, the credit for that reality goes to Howard Hendricks.
Using the acronym "TEACHER," and basing his approach on Gregory's "Seven Laws of Teaching," Hendricks seeks to outline the basic skills, attitudes and characteristics of good teaching and of the good teacher. Clearly he seeks to transform not only the teaching but also the teacher. He does this by devoting one chapter to each of seven characteristics , in an anecdotally- and wisdom-rich format.
Chapter One - The Law of the Teacher-- Stop growing today and you stop teaching tomorrow. He begins by emphasizing that the teacher can only teach as he/she continues to be a learner. When the learning stops, the well runs dry. In addition, people will become conformed to the image of the teacher. Therefore, a teacher must take care to be worthy of imitation, especially in the area of character. For Hendricks, the best candidates for the role of teacher are faithful, available and teachable. Other people need not apply. The teacher must be developing in the intellectual, physical [practical], and social dimensions.
Chapter Two - The Law of Education--How people learn determines how you teach. People are only candidates for learning when they know they don't know and when they care about that. After Maslow, Hendricks speaks of four levels of learning : unconscious incompetence, conscious incompetence, conscious competence, and unconscious competence. Our job is to help our students to see themselves in this continuum and to get them moving, and this will often involve exposing them to their ignorance in a motivational manner. Then we must be alert to "teachable moments." Then, by precept and example, we must teach people how to think, to learn and to work, and develop in them four master skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. All of the foregoing components help assure that those who sit in our classes will truly learn rather than merely observing.
Chapter Three - The Law of Activity--Maximum learning is always the result of maximum involvement. Over and again in his book, Hendricks decries passivity and dependency: we are working to make our students active and independent or at least interdependent [thank you, Steven Covey]. That being the case, students will learn best as they are most active in the process. They need to be guided in their practice, taught to properly evaluate their experience, and learn not by repeating their mistakes but by doing the right things. Hearing is the most inefficient means of learning--people only retain at the most ten percent of what they hear. But they will retain up to fifty percent of what they see and up to ninety percent of what they do.
In the doing department, one must make sure that the activities are meaningful--providing direction without dictatorship, stressing function and application, having a planned purpose, and concerned with process ["the why"] as well as product ["the what"]. And, as much as possible these activities should involve solving realistic problems, if possible, those arising within the experiences of the student. .
Chapter Four - The Law of Communication--To truly impart information reguires the building of bridges. This means really knowing one's students, which in itself means spending time with them outside the classroom. Communication will be more effective to the degree that it is something the teacher deeply knows, feels and does. Therefore a breakdown in any of those three components will vitiate the teaching event. Words are important as teaching tools, but cannot be apart from personal investment and example. Then the teacher must prepare, even over prepare, and then guard his delivery from poor enunciation and poor use of the voice [vary your pitch and speak loudly enough to be heard in the back of the room!]. One must also seek to eliminate distractions, as in poor attentiveness to the teaching space and equipment, and provide for feedback that insures that teaching will be on target and ever-improving.
Chapter Five - The Law of the Heart--Teaching that impacts is not head to head, but heart to heart. Referring to Plato's triumvirate of ethos [character/credibility], pathos [compasssion] and logos [content--note the alliteration!], Hendricks treats them like a pyramid, where each is dependent upon the previous. Without the foundation of character/credibility, there will not be the confidence in the teacher which is foundational to the implicit contract between teacher and student. Second, the student needs to know that the teacher cares about him [I question this], and third of course, is content. All learning is in the direction of change, and needs to be motivated by felt need. Finally, to sum up, in order to be a person of impact, a teacher must know his students, earn the right to be heard, and be willing to be vulnerable with his students.
Chapter Six - The Law of Encouragement--Teaching tends to be most effective when the learner is properly motivated. Having hinted at motivation in the earlier chapters, Hendricks treats it more directly here. Primary is developing a strong sense of felt need: people will not learn what they have no felt need for, and will invest themselves in learning that for which they do have a felt need Having created that felt need, the teacher, if administering training, needs to honor the time-honored cylce of telling, showing, supervised doing, and unsupervised doing.
Chapter Seven - The Law of Readiness--The teaching-learning process will be most effective when both student and teacher are adequately prepared. I very much see Bobby Clinton of Fuller Seminary, another master teacher, in this chapter, as he insists on this kind of approach, giving students much work to do to prepare for each class session. In accord with this philosophy, Hendricks believes in giving students the right kind of assignments, since they precipitate thinking, develop a background for class sessions, and help develop habits of independent study. He then concludes this chapter with some practical suggestions for dealing with either unprepared or over-zealous students.
This book should be required reading for all clergy and teachers, especially in the field of Judaeo Christian religion. It provides a foundational orientation to a spiritually significant and competent teaching ministry. Above all, this is a wise book, and as the Book of Proverbs tells us, it is only fools who despise wisdom and instruction.
Hendricks hits a homerun - must read for every teacher.......2006-06-26
The great Dallas Theological Seminary professor Dr. Hendricks shares with others his basic principles for passing on to his students the knowledge and passion for God's Word. Basically the book can be boiled down to one primary principle - you must have passion for what you know to transfer what you know to others. The book was originally released as The Seven Laws of the Teacher, but has since been repackaged and re-released under this new title with a new cover and design - but the truths shared by Hendricks are timeless and powerful - and should be read by EVERY teacher!
The first law of the teacher was the best, in my opinion - if you ever stop growing today, you stop teaching tomorrow. Dr. Hendricks challenges the teacher to remain a student, to always continue learning, pursuing truth and knowledge - and to pass that thirst on to their students - far more important than any particular lesson or tidbit of information is the thirst for knowledge and truth - and that is something that is modeled for students in the lives of the teacher. If the teacher is stale, the lessons and information can't be fresh!
The Seven Laws of the Teacher are as follows:
* The Law of the Teacher - if you stop growing today, you stop teaching tomorrow.
* The Law of Education - the way people learn determines how you teach.
* The Law of Activity - maximum learning is always the result of maximum involvement.
* The Law of Communication - to truly impart information requires the building of bridges.
* The Law of the Heart - teaching that impacts is not head to head, but heart to heart.
* The Law of Encouragement - teaching tends to be most effective when the learner is properly motivated.
* The Law of Readiness - the teaching-learning process will be most effective when both student and teacher are adequately prepared.

Harvey Mackay was one of the first authors I had read on how to run a business. The book is written in an entertaining manner, and contains a great deal of fantastic advice.
To this day, friends who were around me when I read this book in college will quote parts of it back to me.
It contains tidbits of guidance, some great, some small. All good.

"If you breathe and have a pulse, you NEED this book." -Cody Lundin
Customer Reviews:
A must-read for any hiker, hunter, camper, etc........2007-08-26
If you believe the TV drama crap in the show "Man vs. Wild" where Grylls is scaling cliffs and jumping into freezing rivers, this book isn't for you because Cody Lundin actually wants you to live. The book 98.6 Degrees tells you statistically that most people who die in the wilderness die from hypothermia and hypothermia -- not from avalanches, bear attacks, etc. But most people don't want to hear this maybe because it isn't exciting enough.
I think of this book as the foundation from which all survivalism studies should start. The book really goes into great detail into the "whys" of exposure and other conditions one commonly faces in the wild. You need this information so that you can adapt and think on your own for the unique situation you may face. Cody challenges traditional survivalism manuals and has the personal experience to back up what he writes. One reviewer labeled this book as a kum-bay-ya book, but the book is exactly the opposite. The book speaks with life saving frankness and flat out tells you that you will be worm food if you make certain wrong decisions.
The book has some great color photos and diagrams as well and has perhaps the best and most thorough advice on assembling a survival kit I've seen (the book explains why store bought kits are seriously lacking). The only reason I didn't give it five stars is that I felt the book, at times, spends a little too much time on trivia knowledge (e.g., history of the match) at the expense of more knowledge on shelter building strategies, how to build a fire, etc. I want more info on how to put the survival kit to use. I suppose that might be in a sequel to this wonderful book. Despite minor shortcomings, this book has completely changed how I look at preparing for and handling survival situations. Highly recommended!

Buy the book. Your life, your family's life may be saved by it. Buy it for your friends.
Lundin's fine book focuses on a practical hierarchy of priorities.......2007-07-29
I teach a brief segment on survival skills, and I completely rewrote my class outline after reading Lundin's book. Lundin explains why silly diagrams on building a figure four trap and a solar still do not add to survival skills, but core knowledge of the key priorities of shelter do.
I'll give it four stars instead of five because there is some silly rhetoric in it irrelevant to the survival issue. But I recommend this book to anyone interest in practical advice.
Interesting Reading.......2007-05-13
Interesting reading with excellent ideas, list, supply ideas etc.
Definitely would recomend to keep on hand
GOOD READ.......2007-05-09
Cody takes the crap out of all the non-sense about survival
EVERYBODY should READ if not own this book
I know that I will be better prepared for any survival situation

Helpful info on why you do what you do and are what you are........2007-09-15
This is a great book if you want to make changes in your life. If you've ever ask why you act or do what you do, this book opens it all up. If you don't want to make changes, don't buy it. This book has helped change the way I look at life and myself. I'm a much more peaceful and love life fuller. I highly reccomend it.
Doctor Recommended.......2007-09-13
My doctor recommended this book and I am so glad he did. I have been doing the script the author gave and finding it is making health changes that I want to occor in my life in my body.
I would recommend this to anyone, in fact my daughter and a best friend both got this book after I did.
Love this book.......2007-07-29
I first read this book over 13 years ago. I recently "rediscovered" the book, and I'm so glad I did! With the law of attraction we've been learning about how important our thoughts are, but this book takes it one step further and talks about how important our feelings are. I was sabotaging my own success until I started scripting (she gives her script in this book). I am feeling so much better about everything now, and I am looking forward to many more years of scripting.
Studying The Law of Attraction? This Book is Your Missing Piece!.......2007-06-11
I've been studying and teaching the laws of abundant living, the law of attraction, cause and effect, and a host of other natural universal laws via teleclass and books for years now. But, many (including myself) still feel as if an important piece is missing. "Feelings Buried Alive Never Die" is that missing piece! If you've been trying to practice the law of attraction and God's other universal laws, but something isn't clicking for you, buy this book. Within days of purchasing it, I was able to identify key experiences and feelings which had been blocking my path. Now I'm using "the script" included in the book to transform my negative feelings into positive ones. I'm no longer glossing those feelings over by trying to think positive or display gratitude. I'm specifically addressing and transforming them so they will no longer plague my mind. This book is an answer to prayer.
MUST HAVE THIS INFORMATION!!!.......2007-04-16
This book should be given to each person at birth. If the world were aware of all this information, it would be a much more peaceful place for everyone!

Book Description
She thought she’d have more time. Laurie Notaro figured she had at least a few good years left. But no–it’s happened. She has officially lost her marbles. From the kid at the pet-food store checkout line whose coif is so bizarre it makes her seethe “I’m going to kick his hair’s ass!” to the hapless Sears customer-service rep on the receiving end of her Campaign of Terror, no one is safe from Laurie’s wrath. Her cranky side seems to have eaten the rest of her–inner-thigh Chub Rub and all. And the results are breathtaking.
Her riffs on e-mail spam (“With all of these irresistible offers served up to me on a plate, I WANT A PENIS NOW!!”), eBay (“There should be an eBay wading pool, where you can only bid on Precious Moments figurines and Avon products, that you have to make it through before jumping into the deep end”), and the perils of St. Patrick’s Day (“When I’m driving, the last thing I need is a herd of inebriates darting in and out of traffic like loaded chickens”) are the stuff of legend. And for Laurie, it’s all true.
Customer Reviews:
Hilarious book.......2007-05-29
At least according to my wife. She has a couple of Laurie Notaro books and loves them all. Her books have become the default option for gift giving times (Mother's Day, Birthday etc) as they are a fast and fun read.
We thought you would be skinnier.......2007-05-16
Laurie Notaro is my hero. She has a great writing style. Her stories are hilarious. I suggest every woman who has ever struggled to fit in and do the right thing to read her books.
A must read for any grown up woman!!!.......2007-03-21
I laughed all the way through it, even though some of it is so true it hurts.
An Important Thinker.......2007-03-12
The book, like her previous ones, consists of humorous anecdotes, set in Phoenix (with excursions to San Francisco and New York) and slightly linked together with autobiographical detail. At the end she is moving to Oregon. She doesn't tell us why.
Notaro is an important thinker. Her work addresses the problem of the link between self-esteem, physical appearance and female sexuality. There has always been self-deprecating humor, and even feminist self-deprecating humor, but Notaro takes self-deprecation one step further, into the fearlessly confessional. She is a prose Anne Sexton. A background peaks through, but is never allowed to depress us, of childhood physical abuse, adolescent alienation, alcoholism, obesity and poor physical health. I may be over-analyzing but I found deep meaning in the story were a trapped rat suddenly arouses her compassion.
Laughing Out Loud!.......2007-03-09
I really enjoyed this book. The author had me laughing with her and I read it in a couple of days. I look forward to reading her other pieces. Would love to meet this author in real person - def. could be best friends with Jen Lancaster of "Bitter is the new Black..."
