Good beginner book.......2007-02-02
This book would be very helpful to a true beginner lots of tips and explanations. Very easy to read and follow no rocket science here. I would recommend this to anybody who is starting out in closeup and or macrophotography
Shaw's "Closeups in Nature".......2006-07-22
"Closeups in Nature has provided a good technical approach to closeup photography, especially for the amateur photographer. I was in need of information relative to lense specifications and technical data to try and sucessfully photograph some difficult subject for publication. THis book gave some very generic insight on how to start that photo process and some guidance on how to develope a personal technique.
Classic.. but needs revision.......2006-03-10
This is an excellent book.. if you still use equipment that you have purchase during early 80's. Although the same photographic principles apply, this book can definitely benefit from some major revisions.
Very Good Book.......2005-06-08
This book is very good for Beginners to Intermediate Level Photo Enthusiasts. It has couple of tips and examples which the reader has to grasp and note down till they start using it and make familiar with it. Overall a Great Book for the price with pictures, explanation, Shutter Speed and Aperture values. Lot of new photography students wonder hey how did you get this picture ? What shutter speed and Aperture did you use ? The book indirectly gives you all the answers. Spend time reading it (no Rush) and you will explore new techniques which you can practically use and implement. I Recommend this book.
Out of date - too little advice on technique.......2004-11-02
This book is from 1987, I briefly read the reviews saying that it wasn't in the digital era, OK I figured that's fine, how out of date could it be? However, I didn't expect that so much of the book would be dedicated to functionality that's now fully automatic, such as TTL Flash, and TTL exposure metering.
It's certainly a very interesting technical read, that provided me with an understanding of all the different macro options, lenses, filters, extensions, TC's, reversing rings, bellows, reverse mount adapters, lens stacking, etc. However, it wasn't for me.
I was after something that would show technique, or provide advice on how/where to find the shots he was taking, but the book doesn't cover that at all, to my dismay the book starts with the author writing "it always surprises me that folks find it hard to find subjects" but then provides no advice. After having bought a 60mm Micro lens I was hopeful this would provide direction, but other than "I probably should have bought the 105mm lens" I didn't get any direction from it.

Expecting too much!.......2007-04-28
Maybe I was expecting too much from this book based on a fairly excellent customer reviews at amazon. I maybe expecting too much cause because to my surprise, the book dealt with point and shoot aside from DSLR cameras. I was kind of disappointed with that. I own a Nikon D200 and a Nikon 105mm f2.8 macro lens to learn the art of macrophotography and to my surprise coolpix camera shots were there....honestly i was turned off with that! If you are expecting a purely DSLR macrophotography on this book you may have to look elsewhere! I felt that there was something missing in this book. I know some of you out there knows what I mean...it lacks some oomph!!
Digital Nature Photography Closeup.......2007-04-02
This writer put some very nice photos into his book. He lists the camera and lens that he made the shots with but not the camera settings he used, which would be helpful to someone learning the art.
This is a beautiful book.......2007-02-16
This book is exactly as it says on the back cover....A Complete Guide to Macro Digital Nature Photography. And well done. Well worth my investment.
Polished, but basic.......2006-10-30
I've noticed a problem with specialized photography books: not enough specialized information. Digital Nature Photography Closeup is well organized, clearly written and very attractively designed with some striking photography. Unfortunately, more than half of the book is devoted to basic photo equipment and concepts.
What I've wanted - and have yet to find - is a book on macro photography that assumes I have basic or intermediate photo skills and want to extend them into a new space. The chapters of the book are:
- Equipment
- Camera features and techniques
- Light & Color
- Composition
- Flash
- Working with Histograms
- The Digital Darkroom
It could be the outline of almost any photo book - and much of the content in each is applicable to any photography, not macro in particular.
If you're relatively new to digital SLRs and have an interest in closeup photography, you'll probably get a full meal here. If you're beyond the basics, it's not much more than a light snack. Well presented, but not very filling.
Digital Nature Photography Closeup.......2006-08-29
This book only covers the basics of macro photography and is suitable for 'newbies' at photography. Book and pictures are average quality. Experienced (macro) photographers should look further for technique and inspriration.
Customer Reviews:
Good book.......2007-09-12
It's good, only if what you're looking for is a concise guide - for both digital and film photography.
No camera info for the photos! (!)
One of the better books out there.......2007-09-06
Very clearly written for beginner or advanced. A lot of information. Beautiful pictures. I only wish that each picture had the camera info. Like the f stops, shutter speeds, lens etc. But it does cover landscapes, wildlife, color, close ups very well. Nicely catagorized and a good read. If only it would have the camera info like some other books do it would have been a 5 star book.
The Magic of Digital Close-Up Photography (A Lark Photography Book.......2007-01-13
An excellent book. The author doesnt push you to buy the most expensive equipment, but gives honest reviews about the advantages and disadvantages, about different equipment and lets the reader decide how best to match their budget to their requirements. If your starting out in macro photography well worth the read.
Very solid book with VERY many typos, as though I bought a proof copy.......2006-09-22
I would definitely recommend this book if what you're looking for is a concise and informative guide to a wide array of techniques for shooting close ups with your D-SLR, your digicam, or even your scanner (the scanner chapter was particularly inspiring). Mr. Meehan's prose is a bit labored, but he does exactly what I was hoping he would do: he gives examples of different close up photos you might want to take (flowers or insects outside, jewelry in artificial light, model cars with a dedicated macro flash system, ETC.), and then gives a concise run-down of what you need to do and possibly purchase in order to make similar shots.
My only criticism of this book is that it contains an almost unbelievable number of typos, nearly one every three pages, as well as at least one totally incorrect image (an image of what is supposed to be a camera with a bellows extender attached actually shows something completely different). Still, if you can get past all the typos, it's a good basic primer in digital close up techniques, with a few ideas you may not even have thought to try.
Great treatise on Close-Up Magic!.......2006-07-04
Digital cameras have some special advantages when it comes to taking close-up photos, as the author reveals in this excellent book. There are also some pitfalls to avoid, and the author covers them, too. While this book is aimed at intermediate to advanced photographers, even beginners can learn something from the friendly tone and thorough coverage. This book is a great tool for becoming a master of macro photography quickly.

Insightful and Elegant.......2005-03-04
I've read many books on close-up and macro photography. This one is different from the others, and perhaps the best of the lot. The stunning features of Davies' book is the author's compositional skill (the photos are fabulous), and his ability to relate the technical aspects of macro and close-up photography to the reader. Among his artfull techniques is his extensive use of wide-angle lenses for close-ups. How many other works on the subject explore this possibility? This alone justified purchasing the book for me, since I now make frequent use of the technique.
Though he doesn't mention it in the text, notice how often he under-exposes slide film by about one stop in many of his images. This is one other useful technique I picked up from the book.
I really reccomend this one.
An excellent book.......2004-08-29
This book got me into the world of macro photography. It's mainly directed to the 35mm owners, explains all the basics - DOF, depth of focus (did you know it's not the same?), diffraction and many more.. How to reverse a lens? What can you do with an extension tube? or a converter? How to correct exposure? All answers inside, illustrated with stunning photos. Under every photo in the book you can find all the required details, including the gear used. Really practical, highly recomended.
A decent one for a beginner.......2004-08-08
This is a good book for people interested in close-up and macro photography, its advice is helpful and clear. However, you should consider the volume by Ronan Loaec and Gilles Martin instead. It is somewhat deeper into the subject, but the main reason I recommend it is because Davies' photographs, while perfect, look amateurish compared to Martin's ones, especially judging the artistic aspects.
excellent detail! Excellent book.......2003-03-05
I must say i am completly satisfied with the book. It cover all aspects of macro fotography, hardware, lighting, aperture, flash etc. It also goes into extreme detail in explaning other factors including exposure, calculations and so on. It tells you how to do macro photo in different scenarios.
Amazon just happen to have this book in stock cheaper than my local bookstore.
The Complete Guide to Close Up and MacRo Photography.......2002-10-08
If one wants to explore and record the beauty of close up objects, this is one anyone should have. Interesting, educational, inspirational and beautiful, this book deserves the praise it is receiving. From the author of Nature's Palette: There's More to See, Michael Impellizzeri.
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
Only if your using medium format.......2007-09-21
Nice photos. However, throughout the book the author makes it well known that he primarily uses a medium format Mamiya 645. He has little use for 35mm and almost no use for D-SLR. Little actual "how to".
Would have prefered more hands on instruction or tips.
Nice presentation but missing something.......2006-03-10
This is actually a decent book to learn about macro photography. The author covers the basics of each topics in his book, but not much details as to why certain things should be or should not be done. I recommend John Shaw's Closeups in Nature.
A nice tutorial on macro photography.......2006-01-01
I enjoyed the images in this book as well as the author's commentary on many of the shots. His thoughts on composition are insightful and very useful. I found this book to be a nice introduction, although the first few chapters where the author discusses equipment and the eternal film vs digital debate weren't very useful.

Nature Photography Closse Up.......2007-08-28
NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY CLOSE UP
I seen one review posted about this book and thought it was a bit unfair. Therefore, I decided to write a review of my own and point out some of the good things this books manages to cover.
First, I would like to state that this book is not full of high contrast images. Sure, there may be a few but not many. There are many very good examples of close up photography presented in this book.
The next thing I would like to point out is the lay out of the book. It may come across as a textbook but it is designed so you can open up to any chapter and start from that particular point. In other words, you do not have to start from page one and read straight through. You can skip sections you may feel you already have a handle on.
Now lets talk about the information presented in this book. After all that's the meat and potatoes of any book, right?
This book starts out with a section devoted to camera basics, which covers what else, camera basics. This section is designed for beginners who may not have a grip on macro photography and in my opinion is a very good way to start a book on this subject.
A section on technique, digital photography, fieldwork, designing pictures and adapting imagery soon follow. Each of the sections is broken down into chapters and as stated before you can choose to read just the chapters you need. That is the true beauty of this book layout.
There may be better Macro books on the market but for the beginner this book is absolutely worthwhile. I would like to state one more time that the images in this book are fine. There are some great pictures presented on these pages. I have been shooting for quite some time and I enjoyed many of the photos here.
Maybe past reviewers take themselves a little to seriously. It does not pay to be full of ones self. Beauty is found in the eye of the beholder not in some technical jargon spewed forth by the so-called trained professional.
I rate this book a solid 3 1/2 stars.
Close up guide.......2007-06-01
I was anxious to receive this book because one of my often visited photo sites had recommended it. I found it, however, written and illustrated in a 1970's kind of textbook style with illustrations and information presented in a kind of disjointed way...little boxes of things on each page. The photography was not really up-to-date on a skill level. Much of the photography used was flash-orientated, which made high contrast images, with limited photographic skill...at least by today's standards. I've spent hours with John Shaw's Close up work, and also Robert Thompson's medium format Close-ups. Those works were illustrated with perfectly exposed and framed photographs...high quality work. The text sections do provide some useful information, but books of this sort really need to provide a good bit of inspiration to be useful to the aspiring macro photographer. Equipment recommendations were both interesting and helpful by bringing some 'outside the box' considerations. I would recommmend the book for a growing collection, but not as a single source for macro info...there are may other sources you should also consider.

Fascinating Famous Faces.......2003-12-15
Why do we find certain actors, models and recording artists fascinating while others fail to attract our interest? That's the theme of this rewarding book that investigates the dual mysteries of our reactions to personality and appearance.
While many photographers have produced attractive works focused on famous people, Up Close and Personal is better balanced with thought than most. The format helps this by providing a preface from Cameron Diaz (who is, to me, his most well portrayed subject), comments by many of the subjects about the process and their reactions to it, and Mr. Dunas's own observations about his role and recollections of many of his shoots. The text is in English, French and German to make it more accessible to readers.
Mr. Dunas does portraits in both black-and-white and in color, but seems to do his best work in black-and-white. Age and imperfections become points of attraction in his creased, shadowed faces. He also favors cropping parts of the faces, much in the way that Alex Katz does with his paintings, to give a more candid feel. Sometimes the truncation doesn't quite work because he slightly over does it. Especially interesting are his uses of hands to complement faces.
I thought that about 85 percent of the images were excellent or better, and none were below average.
His most intriguing works are two series involving women over time. The first series begins with Cameron Diaz, taken in 1989. He shoots her again in the same setting in 1994 holding the 1989 portrait. Then he returns to photograph her again in the same setting in 1999, holding the 1994 portrait. You get a sense of her evolution over time (both in maturity and in beauty) along with a wonderful symbol of how our present is shaped by our past. The changes in her hair style from one portrait to another are also intriguing. The second series is of Alexa Davalos in 1996 when she appears as more girl than woman and then in 2001 when she appears as a full-developed woman . . . again in the same scene. These two were taken outdoors so you also see a change in the background tree that heightens the interest.
The book has many wonderful images. Among my other favorites are a diagonal Morgan Freeman (2000), Bob Hoskins with a hand over his face (1998), Xzibit with hands on his eyes (2000), Jackson Browne (1995), face of Salma Hayek (1996), Leon Russell (1972), Emily Watson (1996), Rae Dawn Chong (2001), Rebecca De Mornay (1992 and 1994), Bonnie Raitt (1998), B.B. King (1996), John Lee Hooker (1995), Elizabeth Davidtz (1993), James Coburn (1998), Holland, Dozier, Holland (1998), Chris Cooper (2002), Nick Nolte (1996), LeeLee Sobieski (2001), Keb' Mo' (2001), Mike Leigh (1999), Anne Parillaud (1992), Scotty Moore (1998), Slash (1997), Keeley Smith (2001), Gregg Allman (1998), Martin Sheen (2000), Miranda Richardson (2002), Natasha Henstridge (1992), Diane Lane (1994), and Robin Tunney (2000). As you can see from the subjects, these are not all "pretty" faces like a book of fashion models would provide.
Naturally, for subjects like directors and musicians, most of their appeal comes from their talent . . . which may not show in their faces.
As I finished the book, I was left with the thought that our faces are the reflections also of our soul and character. What does your face show the world about you?
UNIQUE AND COMPELLING PHOTOGRAPHS.......2003-10-31
Gifted celebrity photographer Jeff Dunas has said that "he was born to make photographs." That may well be true as is evidenced by the unique, compelling work found in "Up Close & Personal," an intimate look at contemporary icons.
Whether it be Cameron Diaz, Angelina Jolie, Nastassja Kinski, Martin Sheen, Nick Nolte, B.B. King or a host of others Mr. Dunas's unerring lens seems to capture his subjects very being.
Over one hundred full-color illustrations fill this lush look at the famous, the rich, the talented. In Mr. Dunas's opinion famous people tend to "overwhelm the camera," thus limiting the viewer's view of the person. He attempts to capture the essence of his subjects, what it is that fascinates and draws the public to them.
Described as "the pictures he wanted to take," Mr. Dunas offers a remarkable look at the well-known among us.

For the creative person.......2007-07-28
Although most of the images in the book are truly abstract, few are "true" macro photography. And as other reviewers have stated, the author uses Photoshop plug-ins on most of the images. In fact there were so many plug-ins used, I thought the book might've been published (or sponsored) by some association of companies that offer Photoshop plug-ins. The plug-ins that the author uses throughout the book are:
1.Corel KPT Collection (Color Equalizer, Channel Surfing filter, Reaction, Screen Norm blend, Collection Blur, Gel, Lens Flare, Notch Blur, Spin Blur, Zoom Blur, Fiber Optic)
2. Imaging factory (Color Correction & Color Equalizer)
3. Color Efex Pro (Infrared, Sepia, Bi-color, Pop Art filters, BW Dynamic Contrast, Pen tool)
4. Power Retouche (Sharpen & Color Editor, Edgeline)
5. Flaming Pear (Glitterato, Aetherize, Glow, Glare)
6. Dfine (noise removal)
7. USM (sharpening)
8. Auto/FX (Auto Eye, Mystical Lighting Enhance Strength, Mystical Tint Tone & Color (Antique Photo
Sepia, Soft Posterize, Color Mixer)
9. Corel Painter(Lighting, 3D Surface Texture)
10. Focal Blade Pro (sharpening)
11. Buzz Pro 3 (watercolor filter, Edges Color)
12. Andromedia (Reflection, Scatter Light, Star, Velociraptor, Etch filters)
13. Xaos Tools (Paint Alchemy Abstract, Segmation)
14. Alien Skin (Xenofex 2 Constellation filter, Edges, Diamond Plate, Bevel Boss)
15. Fred Miranda's (Highligh/Shadow)
16. Neat Image (Noise Removal)
17. Photo Wiz Focal Blade (sharpen)
18. Eye Candy 4000 (Water drops, Fire, Drip, Bevel Boss, Nature, Swirl)
19. Photokit (Sharpener)
20. Movie Prime (Lens Flare)
21. Grain Surgey (Noise removal)
However, many of the above effects that are done with these plug-ins can be accomplished with the tools and filters provided in CS2 or 3.
If you set aside all of the negatives, you will find the book to be inspiring. There are a few images in the book that say "wow!" and are well worth the price of the book. If you are a creative person, it's an absolute must buy.
Great pictures, not much useful advice........2007-03-10
This book has beautiful full color abstract photos and some general ideas on how to create them. The problem is (as stated by the author in the introduction) that he uses a number of 3rd party filters and tools which can be quite expensive for the non professional. Most of these effects can be achieved with Photoshop alone and the book would be much better if he described those methods in addition to the 3rd party techniques.
digital overkill is not abstract.......2005-08-12
While it would be correct to say that most of the photographs in this book are abstract, it would be more accurate to describe them as poor and overprocessed in photoshop, with instantly recognizable digital effects such as edge detect, posterize, charcoal, glowing edges, wild tinting and colorization, etc. Gratuitous applications of various fringe filters, ilke Photo Wiz Focal Blade or Xaos Segmation, abound.
In the "Salsa" photograph, you can clearly see the accidental click with a photoshop brush (it happens on Windows when you try to bring a window to the front and accidentally plant a blotch of foreground color).
What the author has done, for the most part, is taken the most average-looking, uninspired photographs, like that of the bottom of his sneaker, and tried to make them work by applying "interesting" effects. The problem is that abstract or not, a picture needs an idea to give it a reason to exist.
To be fair to the author, the very first few photographs look very reasonable and are done in taste. But once the author exhausts the repertoire of contrast, sharpen, and curves, it seems that he begins to grow increasingly desperate trying to fill the rest of the book with content.
The macro section is particularly disappointing: featuring just nine photographs out of the total of over a hundred, with almost non-existent depth of field, and instances of dirt, hair, cigarette butts, magnified slime, sprinkled generously with magnified digital noise, it's underwhelming considering that Macro is in the title of the book.
Beautiful Book.......2005-06-22
Not only is this book an inspirational, it is also chock full of easy to follow techniques. What struck me about this book was that theinformation is not your run of the mill Photoshop, boring, overused techniques. Rather the author comes up with many techniques that differ from what everyone else is doing. I am a graphic designer who is learning to do his own photography so I will have more control over the final product. I am glad I purchased this one and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to do some awesome photographic technques.
Wonderful Inspiration.......2005-06-21
As a Web Designer I am always looking for inspiration and creative ideas. It's easy for me to whip up a Web design but there are times when I need something truly inspirational and unique. I am sometimes "creatively challenged" and need outside inspiration. Ken's book is pure inspiration. The book is what it says it is, a book which is "meant to inspire with its images"
I recommend this book to any creative person who needs that spark of inspiration or to anyone who wants to expand the possibilities with their digital imagery.
