Book Description

Renowned photographer Phil Borges's collection of 80 hand-toned portraits of indigenous and tribal people around the world is a quietly beautiful testament to the strength and inherent dignity of the human spirit. Borges focuses on individuals upholding their cultural traditions in countries from Ethiopia and Kenya to Tibet, and from Mexico to Indonesia. The book is published in association with Amnesty International to mark the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a document adopted by the United Nations in 1948 that outlines fundamental freedoms for all people.

With his photographs and accompanying captions, Borges bridges his subjects' words and ours, offering a compelling yet unsentimental portrait of their homelands, their dreams, and the close family and community relationships that sustain them. In her introduction, Isabel Allende reflects on the importance of mutual respect for individuals different from ourselves-people who, like those captured by Borge's lens, "possess profound spiritual resources, natural wisdom, and knowledge of their physical surrounding that we have lost."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Stunning Portraits of Humanity.......2002-12-11

I picked this up after seeing an exhibit of Borges work at a gallery in San Diego. The images in this book capture the essence of his work in that they express the dignity of people in various cultural and geographic settings simply and beautifully . Wonderful Book to return to again and again. Very uplifting.

5 out of 5 stars Well-crafted, well-composed and well-intentioned.......2002-04-27

Borges' work is stunning to behold, but if you can't make it to a gallery showing of his work, this nicely laid out book is the next best thing. His original technique of selective sepia toning, applied only to the flesh, beautifully complements his compositional style of pulling his subjects clearly out in front of their surroundings. The final effect is to concentrate the viewer's attention onto the person as an individual -- the often-exotic setting provides context and a deeper understanding, but does not distract. The dignity of Borges' subjects shines through, and the fact that this work is connected with Amnesty International is an added bonus.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful tribute to humanity..........1999-06-09

I have not seen the book, but rather gone to a art show that has the same pictures as the book. It is a wonderful exploration of people we may never get to meet unless through Phil's work. A beautiful set of artwork and stories on the people he has captured through the lens. I love his work. He has a fan in me!

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary beauty from someone making a difference........1998-12-18

This book is a haunting collection of beautiful photos that are inspiring and provocative. We have been focusing on saving the environment and the animals for so long that we forget that there are entire cultures of human beings being removed from our planet. Borges has captured this in a manner that is not depressing, but inspiring and a tribute to the human spirit.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very useful self help book.......2007-01-13

I have read around 100 self-help books and would, unhesitatingly, count it as one of the best (if not the best). It gave me lots of food for thought. I think Jane should get onto the Oprah show. It merits that kind of attention.

5 out of 5 stars No more waiting.......2006-07-11

If you have thought to yourself or said out loud, "I just can't do this anymore" this engrossing, entertaining and practical approach to identifying the obstacles to living a vibrant and fufilling life is for you. Jane Straus provides tangible examples and exercises to help anyone who is really ready to address their 'endurance'. I have been acquainted with this author's work for many years and have seen impact in myself and others of her incisive and to-the-point remedies. She reveals her own inspiring story and those of many of her clients with compassion and humor, and invites the reader to undertake this exciting, and sometime painful path to a fuller, richer, more thriving life.

5 out of 5 stars An Inspiring, Powerful Read.......2005-11-30

A fun and easy read, yet powerful and filled with insight and inspiring stories. Jane Straus has compassionately offered her heart and soul in this book about truth, authenticity, non-judgement and forgiveness. "Enough is Enough" provides the reader with a sobering look at how our fears and self-judgements stands in the way of living the life we were meant to live, and how in the end, it is all about forgiveness. Jane gently guides us with practical tools and exercises to help us move forward in the direction of our dreams. Thank you Jane for your honesty, humor and humaness in revealing your own fears and vulnerabilities. I see so clearly now how I have been creating distractions in my own life and I am now ready to live my one precious and extraordinary life with no more excuses! Thank you for this wonderful gift you have given to all of us and to the planet.

5 out of 5 stars Practical advice that can help you impact your daily life immediately.......2005-11-28

I found this book very easy to read and, as strange as this might sound, I felt better immediately after reading it--like I really could change specific aspects of my life NOW if I was willing to see myself truthfully. The author uses personal experience, and the experiences of people she has coached in her professional life, to demonstrate how to stop enduring people, things, etc., in your life and start choosing to live a life that is aligned with your higher truth. While some books require extensive exercises and cumbersome companion workbooks, this book is much less threatening and provides thoughtful questions (she titles these "Time In") for your own consideration after she provides important "food for thought". One thing in particular that I appreciated about the author's approach is that living your life to the fullest is a process that can be started today, no matter what your situation. For example, one of her chapters is titled, "Daily Tonic for an Extraordinary Life" and she offers the following, "Living our truth cannot be for some future goal or noble end; our commitment to releasing judgment and limiting beliefs, practicing positive affirmation, honoring our emotions, and striving for win-win is the daily tonic for breaking free of our endurance." Wonderful stuff that I highly recommend to any reader!

5 out of 5 stars An empowering book that will take you in the direction of your dreams!.......2005-11-08

So all this time I've been "enduring," I could have been thriving! That's the lesson of "Enough is Enough!" by life coach and consulting expert Jane Straus, who tells us that just enduring life is no way to happiness.

In this powerful and truly empowering book, Straus shows how we let our fears, limitations and beliefs lead us into a life where we are just going through the motions. Until we break the bonds of just "enduring," we cannot get to that marvelous place where we aren't just surviving, we are truly thriving, and this book is chock full of tips, tools and techniques for getting us there.

Using plenty of personal experience, plus that of clients she's coached to happiness and success, Straus takes us on a journey that begins by identifying the symptoms of endurance, which include not believing you have enough talent or time, ignoring your feelings, hoping things will change someday, distracting yourself with food or busywork, and more. Once we know HOW we endure, we can then work to change our habits and live a life with more integrity and authenticity.

The chapters help us to find ways to drop our "acts" and find our real inner drives, how to let our heart be free to tell us what it wants, how to forgive ourselves and others so we can move past the past, how to think outside of our comfort zone, and how to constantly find inspiration around us to keep us going in the direction of our dreams.

The author's use of her own personal journey and those of her clients really add so much depth and insight, and reading about how others reached their "enough is enough" point is inspiring and motivating. This is a book that can change so many aspects of your life, as it focuses on getting out of the "just getting by" mode and into a more proactive and enthusiastic way of being in the world.

"Enough is Enough!" is a book that will change the way you look at the life you are now living, and help you shape it into the life you've always wanted to live.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A truly healing and integrating experience........2000-08-12

This book does a good job of explaining not only technique, but also the philosophy and purpose of each movement. It's illustrations are excellent.

My wife has experienced a complete renewal of her body since starting just a few sessions ago. It is enjoyable, life enhancing, energizing, healing and a truly integrating experience for each of us as individuals, and as a couple.

I recommend it for anyone who wants to experience greater self-acceptance and intamacy with their partners.

1 out of 5 stars The Tao of sexual massage.......2000-05-16

Waste of money. Not really a good guide for massage. Massage techniques are quite general, noting special about these techniques.

Better off buying a regular massage book.

This is the only do-book that I've read on tantra, and I've read quite a few, which delivers immediate results. If you practice the exercises in this book you'll wonder why TV has ever been invented...

5 out of 5 stars Holocaust Story.......2005-12-15

Surprisingly good for a non-full-time writer. The story unfolds into something of a nail-biter at times, that would have made decent fiction. As with all holocaust accounts, some of it is tragic and hearbreaking. I found it every bit as engaging and well done as more famous works of the genre, such as The Hiding Place. Worth the time if you are interested in a true holocaust tale.

    Book Description

Mark Button and his wife eagerly await the birth of their first child — or rather, children, as Ronnie is pregnant with triplets. However, Mark's hopes and dreams are dashed in one horrible moment, when — on Mother's Day — Ronnie tragically dies without warning. Then Mark meets Diane, and in time they build a new life together — never forgetting how precious and delicate life can be. Desiring to always "be there" for their first child, they write her letters — the first within hours of her birth. The envelope simply states, "To be opened on the day your first child is born." Mark and Diane have continued this tradition, and now each of their three children has a Letter Box filled with special memories and encouragement for the future. Complete instructions for creating personalized Letter Boxes are included.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Definetely a tear jerker..........2003-11-05

I teared when I read parts of the book, but it is such an awesome book! I didn't want to put that book down until I was completely finished reading it. I definetely recommend it to anyone with children. I loved it, and I plan on keeping up with my letter box to my son.

5 out of 5 stars A wrenching story of love beyond death.......2003-05-15

Mark and his wife wanted a family for years and were filled with joy upon discovering they were expecting triplets - but when the dream was ruined, Mark faced an empty future. His container for collecting thoughts and feelings became gifts which included his friends and anyone who knew him. The Letter Box is a wrenching story of love beyond death and the recovery process, and is a highly recommended pick.

    5 out of 5 stars Moving.......2002-12-16

Picked up an autographed copy of this book for Mom for Christmas. I was bored later that day and started reading it and couldn't put it down. I cried and smiled and in the end, was inspired to create my own letter boxes for my loved ones. Get this book!

    5 out of 5 stars Very Moving...An amazing story!.......2002-09-25

Dian and Mark Button have written an extremely rewarding story.

The most amazing part is that it is true!

I believe books, like people, can come into our lives at certain times for a reason. This is a book that showed up and changed my life. It is a story that is as good as any intensely romantic novel. And.... the book offers a path that can change your life, and the lives of your ancestors, for generations to come.

Page by page, Diane and Mark share a story that is a keen, honest observation of their struggles, pain, joys and humanity. Although I read it in one sitting, it is a journey worth savoring because the final destination is worth it. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars The Letter Box.......2002-09-20

What an amazing gift this book is to us all, especially as our country navigates our own recent tragedies and has remebered the importance of family connections. This gripping true story made me laugh and cry (in a public place I might add!)and underscored what a cherished testament of love a letter could be for my children, family members, and loved ones. This book is inspirational, honest, gut wrenching, and thought provoking.... a must read for all, or a great gift idea for the holidays!

      Book Description

TIBET: Enduring Spirit, Exploited Land describes the traditional lives of nomads and farmers and their practices in co-existing with the environment. The environmental ethic developed by the Tibetans over millennia now threatened by Chinese social system and development practices, and the massive transfer of Han Chinese into Tibet. These events have gained increased significance for the world as dependence on the natural resources reaches its limits. The survival of the Tibetan culture and its environment has local, regional and global implications: The Tibetan Plateau is the source of Asia's major rivers that is the lifeline to millions of people throughout Asia. Tibet has been shown to influence weather conditions that affect the global climate patterns. The changes to the Tibetan environment through colonization have affected the livelihood of nomads and farmers. Moreover, the destruction of the Tibetan culture means a loss of an age-old earth-based wisdom of co-existing with the environment. Through interviews with Tibetan nomads and farmers, Apte and Edwards document the significant changes to this previously pristine environment as a result of the ongoing impact of the Chinese presence. The overall picture makes it clear that what happens in Tibet, has a direct and crucial bearing on the lives of hundreds of millions of people in Asia living downstream from Tibet, and on the environmental balance of the world.

Using scientific methodology, Daegling systematically and persuasively repudiates the evidence purportedly demonstrating the creature's existence, and ultimately concludes that Bigfoot exists only in the popular imagination. 4 out of 5 stars Well written and informative....but.......2007-06-30

Daegling provides a well-written look from the skeptics point of view at the Bigfoot phenomenon. Unlike some books by advocates, he gives quite a bit of coverage to the opposite point of view. He provides all the reasons why advocates say the evidence is real, then tries to tear it down. He mostly succeeds...mostly. Some of his explinations for how the Patterson film could have been faked are harder to believe than the thought that a real creature could be roaming our woods without detection. Read this together with Dr. Jeff Meldrum's "Bigfoot: The Legend Meets Science" and you'll have the closest thing to a debate on the subject as you can get. Meldrum takes the opposite view, saying the evidence is simply too detailed to be fake. Both of these men are anthropologists with many credentials, so you can't simply dismiss one or the other. Daegling is the better writer, while Meldrum has done more hands-on research. Both are great books that should be read by anyone interested in the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Things That Go Bump in the Mind?.......2006-10-23

"Bigfoot Exposed" is the best skeptical book that I've read on the Bigfoot legend. Daegling reviews the evidence in calm, well written prose--he does not personalize the debate and seems to have a sincere respect for the Bigfoot "advocates" with whom he plainly but respectfully disagrees.

Bigfoot believers will not like Daegling's conclusions, but he gives the legend a fair shake. He takes the mystery seriously and analyzes it carefully, posing some reasonable questions: If Bigfoot is a real animal, why have we found no bodies or bones for scientists to study? Where are the fossils that show when such a large animal arrived or evolved in North America? How can a breeding population of 1,000 pound primates live on the well-populated West Coast of the United States without occasionally (or even frequently) being killed by a hunter or struck by an automobile? If we have a true scientific understanding of the animal's footprints, why can't we reliably distinguish known fakes from the real thing? (Even Bigfoot expert Gordon Krantz was taken in by a cleverly hoaxed print.) If the Patterson film is so convincing, why do so many people have good reasons to doubt it--and, if there's a breeding popultion of large animals amid a human population well equipped with camcorders and picture phones, why haven't we gathered much more and much better photographic evidence in the last 40 years?

It's possible, of course, that there will ultimately be good answers to these questions and that Bigfoot will turn out to be real. Daegling's book simply explains why that's not the way to bet.

Another good book in this genre of "taking the Bigfoot legend seriously but not becoming a convinced believer," is Robert Michael Pyle's "Where Bigfoot Walks: Crossing the Dark Divide," which describes the search for Bigfoot and Pyle's own experiences hiking and camping in Bigfoot country.

2 out of 5 stars another piece of crank scholarship masquerading as "balanced" treatment.......2006-06-17

Yet another supposed expert brandishes his incompetence by setting out to debunk the non-debunk-able. The book is infuriating from the get-go: something along the lines of, "Now that Krantz and Dahinden and such are dead and gone, perhaps the myth will die out." Sure, buddy. Mock the dead. That's most intrepid of you. Did you lie in wait in the woodwork because you were utterly unable maturely to debate either of these gentlemen (Dahinden was, albeit, arguably much less of a gentleman than Krantz). Your facts don't hang together--where they even are facts, that is. Your argument is limp and flaccid. As the imminent Napier (no, not the late Renaissance mathematician!) once stated, many set out to debunk sasquatch based solely upon the premise that its existence is too fantastic to consider. What poppycock! The list of "too fantastic to consider" is rather longer than one's arm: I'm sure the author would have been laughed out into the street if he suggested, at a gentlemen's club in 1850 London, that man would one day fly to the moon. The sasquatch "myth" is not dead because it is a challenging hunt, not a myth. It will be brought in. The sad part is that, generations from now, some child will pass a sasquatch in a zoo, not even shoot him a second glance, and complain, "Mom, I'm bored with the ape house: can we go see the snakes?"

I sometimes regret even being a scientist because scientists--most alarmingly--refuse to prosecute the scientific method yet boldly declare how unbiased they are, almost to a man. How dare Daegling the "scientist" analyze an issue by attempting to poke fun at leading researchers in the field while weaving his "argument" out of disparate threads, cobbled hence and thence, that don't even comprise a negotiable line of reasoning? Sir, you should be executed, then tortured.

          3 out of 5 stars A book for ' Advocates' & Skeptics.......2006-02-24

Okay, so this is a little longer review than I originally intended but bear with me:

David Daegling presents us with a much more intelligent approach to arguing the skeptic view on Bigfoot existence then Greg Long did in his book. While Long was stretching his limits on what counted on 'proof' of a Patterson film hoax, Daegling provides some decent arguments on Bigfoot non-existence in general. While Daegling presents a much more informed look, it's also not convincing. He opts to label 'believers' with the term of "Advocates", kind of a degrading word in itself saying that 'believers' are allowing themselves to be duped.

First he presents a "continuity test" regarding lack of any fossil evidence thus the creatures don't exist. A stalwart argument for the skeptic but faulty in its own right, because if that were the case, many other common animals don't exist either - due to lack of a fossil record. He questions the ability for the creatures to remain fairly undetected outside eyewitnesses. Well the remainder of the Yahi tribe lived on the outskirts of a California town for nearly 40 years and remained undetected, and these people used housing and fire. He dismisses the Jacko capture at Yale, BC as an escaped circus ape. A shaky argument in either case, pro or con bigfoot. Daegling dismisses the Ostman kidnapping and the Roe description because they are too similar and were brought to public attention near the same time, dismissing it as too coincidental.

Daegling puts a lot of stock in the words of track and film fakers such as Wallace, Marx, and Freeman, allowing that because they claimed fakery that thus everything they may have been involved in had to be faked. The Jerry Crew tracks at a Wallace work site in Bluff Creek is dismissed because Wallace supposedly used an elaborate pulley and weight system through the trees to lay them overnight, that in itself is just as unbelievable as an actual creature. The time just doesn't seem sufficient to have used such an undetectable pulley system overnight. This doesn't account for purported changes in shape and track dispersal in the same line of tracks either.

Daegling's main argument is focused on the simplistic view that just because tracks, evidence, and film of bigfoot can be faked by humans then it must all be faked. Because evidence could have been faked by a someone that was deceptive enough, he states is a certainty the creatures don't exist. He also puts alot of 'circumstantial' stock in Danny Perez and the often overlooked sour grapes person of Cliff Crook. He dwells on the infighting of early expeditions between the Big 4 (Byrne, Green, Dahinden, and later Krantz). He likes to focus on bad eggs like Marx and Freeman, known hoaxers and largely discreditted by anyone in bigfoot research.

The author pretty much dismisses all eye witness testimony on the simple statement that unlike law and courts, science can't use testimony as proof of something, an admittedly valid response in the case of experiments and lab/field testing. Also, like many skeptics, he says eyewitnesses are hallucinating, misinterpreting what they see, or outright lying. Daegling also seems to be on a personal crusade to discredit anything put forth by Krantz and Meldrum, and pretty much blows off anything John Green has to say. He quotes Green in saying that Green accepts bigfoots because all other possibilities (total hoaxing/fakery, hallucinating, lying witnesses) are beyond reason. Again, admittedly a fair argument, but then Daegling's arguments are the exact same thing only in reverse saying that because a human COULD fake all the stuff then it must not be real.

He becomes contradictary in discussing the Patterson film in Chapter 5, talking of bagginess to a costume then goes on to says musculature movement could be evident by someone wearing a skintight, size-too-small long johns with hair attached. If it's skin tight, how is it baggy? If it's skin tight, how does he explain the bulkiness of the subject in the film? He attacks the sagittal crest evident on the subject saying the obviously female creature shouldn't have a crest because female gorillas don't. Actually they do, it's just seldomly as pronounced and we aren't talking about gorillas anyways. Overall, Daegling questions the measurements (as anyone should) but then unconvincingly downplays the subject of the film itself in concerns of odd arm length, musculature, and fluidity of movement (claiming it's simply a Groucho Marx walk).

Okay, that was a bit longer than even I expected to make it. Condensed version: Daegling supplies the reader with some intelligent and thought provoking arguments but also remains inconsistent within his own arguments and statements. This is a worthwhile book for skeptic and 'believer/advocate' alike. It is so much better than the farce Long put forth. I recommend it to both skeptic and believer.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book For Believer or Skeptic.......2005-11-17

Cryptozoologists want to believe there has been no outside scientific research of the so-called evidence. There has been a lot . David has done a fine job looking into what the Crypto's claim and analizing it as scientifically as possible.

Between Dave's book and the book "The Making of Bigfoot." we are seeing a realistic and logical look into what sparked the bigfoot craze of the last 47 years.

Kudo's to Dave and all those who are spending the time to delve into this fun topic with an open mind and real research. To the Cryptos who read this, please think before saying scientists and skeptics are close minded. It seems to be the Crypto's that are close minded and ignoring the research that doesn't always support them. I might be wrong on this but from all the dozens of bigfoot readings I've done it seems to be the case.

If cryptozoology is ever going to be a real science and not just pseudo science it'll need to get much more scientific and have less wild guessing and taking things as fact without research on them. Bigfoot Exposed is a step in the right direction.

FYI A good read about native folklore on this subject is Robert Alley's "Raincoast Sasquatch."
