Book Description
In this book, the authors set forth a new model of globalization that lays claims to supersede existing models, and then use this model to assess the way the processes of globalization have operated in different historic periods in respect to political organization, military globalization, trade, finance, corporate productivity, migration, culture, and the environment. Each of these topics is covered in a chapter which contrasts the contemporary nature of globalization with that of earlier epochs.
In mapping the shape and political consequences of globalization, the authors concentrate on six states in advanced capitalist societies (SIACS): the United States, the United Kingdom, Sweden, France, Germany, and Japan. For comparative purposes, other states—particularly those with developing economics—are referred to and discussed where relevant. The book concludes by systematically describing and assessing contemporary globalization, and appraising the implications of globalization for the sovereignty and autonomy of SIACS. It also confronts directly the political fatalism that surrounds much discussion of globalization with a normative agenda that elaborates the possibilities for democratizing and civilizing the unfolding global transformation.

A guidepost in a changing world.......2005-10-04
This book was first published in 1999 and although it can look a little outdated given the many tumultuous World developments in the following few years, Global transformations still remains a comprehensive treatment of a vast subject with ever changing borders. The authors strike the right balance between theory and evidence, history and geography. However, their main contribution is the areas they cover (i.e. global politics, military globalization, global trade and markets, global finance, multinational corporations and global production networks, globalization and migration, cultural globalization, environmental globalization). The authors state at the beginning that they will concentrate on 6 states (France, Germany, Japan, Sweden, UK and USA), however, they are not able to fulfill this self-imposed constraint. This book does not cover globalization as perceived in the developing word.
They don't explicitly propose either a specific theory or their own view, but they muse with their topic and look at it through different lenses. It is not a readerly text, but an open text that invites interpretations and critical thinking. However, this does not mean that the authors were pursuing a full-fledged post-modern approach, even if here and there the authors give rise to such suspicion.
The authors analyze globalization as a process, therefore it is difficult to predict where it will lead us. It is a historical process that cannot be characterized by an evolutionary logic. However, globalization is not a wholly novel phenomenon, but its intensity has increased. The authors come to prefigure that the current phase of globalization is not going to erode state power or cause "the end of politics" like the end of the Cold War didn't mean "the end of history". Globalization has not altered the absolute autonomy of states, but interactions among states have changed and become more complex. A question still remains: How can globalization be "civilized" and democratized?
The book is highly recommended to all who consider globalization as a defining principle of our time.
Uncover Globalisation.......2004-06-20
David Held continues a tradition of uncovering the whole side of social processes. Now it is time to uncover the great cliche of our times: globalisation (considered here as a process)!! Reviews and categorizes current thinking on the issue plus explores the multi-dimensionality of the processes of globalisation in a comparative way with the past globalisations (i.e. military-industrial, trade, finance, production, people on the move, culture).
valuable text, dull read.......2002-08-21
One of the most fact-packed, intelligent studies of globalization, but this is noone's beach reading. I recommend reading the intro and thereafter using it as a reference.
For a more literary, bizarre, and stimulating take on the contemporary global condition, check out Hardt and Negri's Empire.
boring, wordy, and dense...definite thumbs down.......2002-06-26
If your goal is to learn the effect globalization has on the state, society, and politics in general this book provides alot of information but it presented in a way that will put you to sleep.
Instead of reading the chapters I would recommend going straight to the tables and grids provided because the author does not do a good job of getting to the point. I also found that the grids and tables were a good source of what each chapter actually summed up.
I would, however, have to credit the authors for doing a thorough job of covering the various aspects of globalization- from patterns of global finance to global trade and markets to military globalization. Best chapter is the one that deals with migration-otherwise don't bother with this book- you would probably be better of with another book that covers globalization.
Thumbs down.......2002-01-28

Respected educational publisher DK partners with the world's leading online search engine Google to create the innovative e-encyclopedia, a hefty, heavily illustrated hardcover reference book for young scholars that also refers its readers to their exclusive, kid-friendly web site. Featuring more than 2,000 full-color images, the book covers nine major subject areas: Space, Earth, Nature, Human Body, Science and Technology, People and Places, Society and Beliefs, Arts and Entertainment, and History. Each of the 600 entries provides illustrations and brief, easily digestible tidbits of information about everything from why the Rhine River is so important to Europe to what the brain is made of. If a grey "e" button is visible on the page, that means a treasury of online resources will be available when you search the DK/Google web site for the designated keyword--links that include animations, videos, sound buttons, virtual tours, interactive quizzes, databases, timelines, or real-time reports.
Say you want to learn about rockets. You look it up in the index and find it called out in bold for page 101. Here you'll see a photograph and a brief description of a rocket and how it works. You'll also find the gray "e" button, signaling you to type in "rockets" as a keyword into the given web site. Once you do that, you'll find the following kid-friendly links: 1) How do you launch a rocket from a spinning planet? 2) Launch the space shuttle into orbit beside the ISS, and 3) Visit a rocketry and space flight gallery. Children are also directed towards downloadable images and more directories of related links. Subjects such as metamorphosis provide less-satisfying results, as the page gives the briefest of explanations and a ladybug larva-adult diagram, but no keyword link to the special web site. Still, this useful book offers the possibility of hours of browsing, both on and off-line, giving kids a rich, multimedia learning experience while assuring parents of a kid-safe Internet zone. If you know google, you don't need this book.......2004-05-06
This is a book for parents and children who are completely in the dark about google. It's the largest, most used search engine out there. Quite frankly, who doesn't know about Google at this point in time. Also, the links mentioned in this book that will be "maintained" and "monitored" and etc.--shouldn't parents be monitoring the sites that their children visit? Does anyone know the involvement and the amount of manpower this will take for a company to monitor ALL of these links? Next to impossible..yet only time will tell. What happened to good-old-fashioned Make Way for Ducklings? What about time away from "the web". DK is really for youngsters who can't read. YES, DK books are full of gorgeous pictures, but that's about...this is a hyped up title. You don't need it. Two stars for effort...I guess they are trying to keep up with technology?
Keywords for finding information are highlighted.......2003-12-07
This unusual 'e.encyclopedia' highlights any subject where you can get extra information on the web - reports, video footage, and even sound recordings. It's organized so keywords for finding such information are highlighted, making it easy for students to use this e-dictionary in conjunction with the computer - but the visual displays and color paired with the basic facts are plenty to also make this stand along as a superior reference. Highly recommended: a visual and practical treat illustrating the positive marriage between reference book and Internet.
Book Description
In this generously illustrated monograph the renowned South African photographer David Goldblatt explores the aftermath of Apartheid in and beyond Johannesburg. In the past decade David Goldblatt's documentary photographs of his native country have gained worldwide recognition for their intimate, unflinching views of a culture ravaged by prejudice and injustice. Since 1999 Goldblatt has focused primarily on large-format color works: land- and cityscapes that capture not only the country's fragile social structure but also its beautiful vistas and vibrant hues. Intersections is the first complete volume of Goldblatt's color work to date. His urban images dwell on the ostentatious developments mushrooming in and around Johannesburg as well as scenes of the everyday life of people who make their living within the city. His rural images capture the seductive vastness of the landscape, the damage done to the land by the mining industry, and the dignity of the people living on the land. His photographs capture the contrasts that represent South Africa: white and black, rural and urban, desperate and hopeful. They mark the emergence of an important new phase in the work of a photographer who, living among his subjects, uses his art to make sense of these very contradictions.
Book Description
When David Goldblatt received the world-renowned Hasselblad Award in 2006, he had been making photographs of the South African landscape and culture for more than 50 years. Born in 1930 in a gold-mining town near Johannesburg, his parents were Jewish refugees from Lithuania, and they raised him with an emphasis on tolerance and antiracism. In 1975, at the height of apartheid, Goldblatt explored white nationalist culture in Some Afrikaners Photographed, and in the 80s he observed workers on the Kwandebele-Pretoria bus, many of whom traveled eight hours every day to work and back. His late-90s solo show at New York's Museum of Modern Art focused on architectural work, and showed off Goldblatt's uncanny ability to discover a society through its buildings and landscapes. His photographs of architectural structures revealed the ways that ideology had defined his home country's landscape.

Goldblatt's books takes you from the South Africa of the 1950's to the present and from his first book to the latest. The beauty of the book lies in that you are, along with David, an intimate observer of history unfolding.
Highly recommended for any serious photography enthusiast. An experience on its own... T

Dumbstruck: A Cultural History of Ventriloquism
ASIN: 0415370604 |
Book Description
In his intriguing new book, David Goldblatt examines what he calls "the complex logic of ventriloquism" and its relationship with art, philosophy and the artistic process. In the conversational exchange between ventriloquist and dummy, Goldblatt recognizes a speaking in other voices, illusion without deception, talking to oneself, effacing oneself as speaker, being beside oneself - the ancient Greek notion of Ecstasisi - and the animation of inanimate objects as an unabashed anthropomorphism.
Like ventriloqual dummies, artworks take on personalities, characters of their own, often saying what the artist herself would or could not say in voices distinct from her (our) daily modes of expression. Goldblatt uses ventriloquism as an apt metaphor to help understand a variety of artworld phenomena - how the vocal vacillation between ventriloquist and dummy work is mimicked in the relationship of artist, artwork and audience, including the ways in which artworks are interpreted. Moreover, Goldblatt uses the concept of ventriloquism to generate insights into many of our important philosophers' writings on the arts, discussing the work of Nietzsche, Foucault, Derrida, Cavell, Wittgenstein, among others.
Featuring a critical commentary by Garry L. Hagberg and preface by series editor, Saul Ostrow.
Customer Reviews:
It'll open your eyes.......2006-08-27
On the surface, a chilling account of foot binding in old China. But at the same time, a subtle commentary on the Cultural Revolution. It's entirely possible to miss the connection and still thoroughly enjoy this novel. It gets rather difficult to distinguish between fact and fiction, which is how writing should be. The author is a master of language and of characterization. This is another author who I'm gonna hunt down, and another book I'll reread. I almost never reread anything. It's the highest compliment I can pay a book, because my attention span is horrendously short.
Amazing novel... great cultural insight..........2005-09-27
A very moving novel about an unusual Chinese tradition. Gives new understanding to the ritual of footbinding so the reader (esp Westerners) can have a new appreciation for why women bound their feet.
Read For Yourself.......2005-09-27
This beautifully written (or translated) book is probably your best guidebook to the ancient tradition of Chinese foot-binding. Regardless of your opinion prior to reading this novel, you will close the book with an ambivalent feeling. The author has carefully plotted the novel so that you will no longer know how to feel towards the tradition.
The story revolves around Fragrant Lotus and her pair of astounding bound feet. She rises up the social ladder solely because of her feet, and until her very end, defends the culture of foot-binding. As a female reader, you cannot help sympathizing with her heroism. This novel will also intoxicate you with the splendour and sexuality of three-inch feet. The sexuality is not vulgar or crude; rather it is subtle and suggestive.
The story later depicts a conflict between the traditional and a new unbinding movement, symbolising the Cultural Revolution. The ending is profoundly ironic: you are sure to be caught in surprise.
If I were to mention one flaw of this novel (and I regret having to say this to an otherwise beautiful book), it would have to be of the overly melodramatic storyline: a cinderella-marriage into a rich family, the furtive hatred between two women, the presence of a mysterious old woman, the protagonist rising from the ashes, and the death of a powerful houselord.
Nonetheless, you should consider reading this novel, and enjoy the luxury of judging for yourself.
More to be desired, but otherwise brilliant.......2005-09-26
Three Inch Golden Lotus by Feng Jicai is one of the more controversial novels of his time, emphasizes conflict in the areas of power (within society and between individuals), the old and the new, and what ultimately brings happiness. The novel also addresses the question of standards of beauty and explores the possibilities when two views come into conflict. Jicai uses a style that is meant to provoke by highlighting the extremes without exaggerating the situation and this piece flows even as a translation, with distinct aspects of the Chinese writing style. It serves as a historical, political, cultural and moral piece of writing covering the whole scene of a sliver (dealt exclusively with foot binding) of the transition period between the end and beginning of The Cultural Revolution in 1949.
Although the Cultural Revolution started in 1949, the novel does not center around this event, but follows the timeline of Golden Lotus, the daughter of parents who had died and left her with her grandmother- Granny. First off the novel deals with the serious, life-changing implications of having beautifully bound feet. Jicai cleverly illustrates the situation of a peasant girl who would have been lost in the society where there was a distinguishable split between the rich and poor, where upon being rescued by her bound feet instantly finds herself in a position among which the most influential men in society could be swayed and steered. Soon Golden Lotus finds her enemies cutthroat and oppressive when in the position of power. She has no choice but to play the game for her own survival. It is purely a foot contest. It is through this power struggle that Golden Lotus is taken to the lowest point she has ever encountered in her life. She tries to save her daughter from the game, contrary to what her grandmother has tried to do for her. From Golden Lotus' perspective, in the end it becomes a question of being either powerful with suffering involved or being undistinguished and happy. Despite her efforts, her daughter still ends up in a position of power, which leaves the reader to decipher Golden Lotus' thoughts on this as she passes away.
Irony is prevalent throughout this novel as it is Golden Lotus' daughter who ends up being her greatest enemy. The conflict posed here is one between different standards of beauty. As The Cultural Revolution occurred there were large movements to unbind or not bind feet at all. Jicai addresses the power battle between the two within society as being unnessessary. Originally it is those that were in the Cultural Revolution that initiated the attack against those who still had bound feet. Because Golden Lotus has the most beautiful feet in the most influential family, she was immediately the leader of those who wished to keep their feet bound. In the end Jicai seems to want to convey that change should not be forced upon anyone, but it should let itself take its toll.
Jicai's style conveys his story in the form of a conversation with the reader. His story covers the whole aspect of the lifestyle at this particular time even illustrating a scene where the most respected men get drunk and are forever diminished in the eyes of the reader. For these men women's bound feet are of their only concern, and it is evident that Jicai tries to convey the sexual aspect of the obsession for feet. This may be one of the things overlooked to an unsuspecting reader, as it is almost as if the reader subconsciously rules out this possibility from the beginning due to his own views on what qualifies as being `sexy'. But there is no question about the bound feet's sexual connotation after it is pointed out, which makes Jicai a far more daring writer than one had previously thought, if one were to assume writing about sexual topics in such detail at that time period would generally be inappropriate. But then again, that could be the western assumption - as Jicai constantly tries to evoke the reader and push the reader's perspective. In the end the reader is taken by Jicai's humor, storyline and historical insight and accuracy given the situation, but wonders whether there is much more to be devoured in the Chinese version that didn't quite make its way through to the translation (being from a Chinese background I could pick up on instances where the situation would have been more effective had it been written in its original form and read by a Chinese reader).
Foot Bidning: The Black Majic.......2005-09-25
The realistic, erotic and detailed piece vividly portrays the political and social conditions in China between the 1890's and 1930's. Although the novel's connection to the Cultural Revolution is not readily apparent, it is stated in the "Translators Postscript" that Jicai intended to indirectly expose the reader to the "revolutionary transformation that had spanned the entire twentieth century in China". By exposing the reader to characters such as Fragrant Lotus and her family, he succeeds in conveying a very clear message regarding the presence of the "unmitigated evil": the balancing of historical progress against the suffering of the innocent individual is not worth it.
I was particularly attracted to the novel by its exact descriptions of characters, events and settings. Even though the book is translated from its original Chinese, the descriptions of the scenes are unique and memorable. The author's usage of syntax such as personification and similes, imagery and figurative language brings the piece to life. I particularly thought that the scenes where Jicai personifies the small "bound feet" as some living or non-living creature was profoundly striking. The detailed descriptions serve to bring the piece to life and create a tale that is thoroughly engrossing. The novel is captivating from the very first chapter when the reader is exposed to vivid descriptions of the process of "foot binding".
I recommend this book because it is told as a story; however, there is an unstated meaning behind the play that consists of intricate, yet deep historical interpretations. A satire with literary and historical events of China interwoven with one another, the story is clearly one that is worth reading.

Great Stuff!!!! This book is staggering in the breadth and depth of info available.

If you've ever been watching a game from the Premier League in the UK or the Bundesliga in Germany and wondered about the rivalries, etc... then this book is for you.
We leave this book on the coffee table and pull it out whenever there is a game on TV. It makes the experience so much more interesting. It isn't uncommon to come in and see one of the guys leafing through the pages just learning about soccer around the world.
We bought several of these as gifts for our soccer coaches. Even they were blown away.
We all strongly recommend this book for soccer fans!!
Nice Country data.......2005-10-14
Goldblatt does a great job of collecting national data of all football countries and gives great piece of info in cities and countries football maps.
Though, he fails to tha truth when establishing certain leagues facts and characteristics, as he involves in these his actual thoughts and perceptions.
Anyway, the best comprehensive statistic book written in football, that hopefully he will continue to improve.
No Other Yearbook Is Needed.......2005-01-08
This is about as comprehensive a yearbook as I have ever seen for any sport. There is so much information packed in this colorful volume that it would take you a year just to get through it all. But for people in the States who can't get enough of soccer/football, there is no other book better than the Soccer Yearbook by David Goldblatt.
Every region of the world is color-coded for easy reference. Maps of cities, like Milan, make it easy to spot the locations of famous stadiums around the world. Maps of countries show all the teams, their jersey colors, their founded date, and so much more. Filled with color photos and loaded with amazing stats, this is a football fan's dream tome.
Look no further. This is an awesome reference tool for the soccer fan in YOUR life.
