1 out of 5 stars A gyp.......2007-06-18

What I think is most amazing is the fact that the publisher had the audacity to put a $10-plus price on this and double that for the Large Print version. The book is no more than a short short story with some mundane illustrations. The story itself is rather nice, but it really belonged in one of the first four novels in the series.

4 out of 5 stars I think it's worth the money........2003-01-26

A very sweet book. I found it a true value: a delight for Mitford series readers plus a chance to introduce the characters to the youngsters. My 10 year old dyslexic son now wants the Mitford series read aloud to him. Look at her children's books: Miss Fannie's Hat and Jeremy.

2 out of 5 stars Not even worthy of being a book..........2003-01-10

I could type the entire book in this section and save you the trouble of checking it out, but I won't, because that would be copyright infringement. But this book is less than 1000 words. There isn't even a moral to the story - it's just a story about several of the Mitford residents building snowmen in front of the stores on Main Street. This is SUCH an obvious attempt to milk the Mitford series for more money without having to actually write another novel. I was EXTREMELY disappointed. I wasn't expecting a long story, but I was expecting something to happen! Philip Gulley writes short stories in all of his books and each of them have a meaning or moral and most aren't that much longer than this book. Seems to me that it would have been easy enough to write a short story with a moral or lesson, but alas, no. Read it IN the library - don't even bother checking the book out.

1 out of 5 stars The Mitford Snowmen.......2003-01-03

Don't waste your money. It takes less that 10 min. to read and I didn't even find it very entertaining. I was so disappointed! I have enjoyed all of Jan Karon's other books but I feel she wrote a few lines to earn some extra cash. I am so disappointed I may not buy another thing that she writes!

3 out of 5 stars WAY too short!.......2002-12-23

If you're a real Mitford fan, you will want to read this book. I settled down for a cozy little read, but I was disappointed that it took me less than 5 minutes to read the whole book, start to finish!

I love Jan Karon and Mitford, but this is such a tiny taste... Perhaps if you think of it as a Christmas card and not a book! Merry Christmas to all!

Book Description

Readers flocked home to Mitford last Christmas, making The Mitford Snowmen a New York Times bestseller.

In Esther's Gift, Esther Bolick is filled with the holiday spirit as she prepares to bake the annual batch of her famous-and utterly scrumptious-orange marmalade cakes. Right after Christmas Eve service at Lord's Chapel, she and Gene will deliver a two-layer marmalade to each of seven friends and neighbors, all of them favorite Mitford characters. Then Gene calculates what it costs to bake this legendary cake, and Esther is stunned. Is it worth it to spend so much money on people who haven't always measured up to her expectations? The answer is clear. She'll cut her list back-way back.

This decision makes perfect sense until the lyrics of a Christmas carol steal into her heart, and help remind her what a gift really means.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Ten minutes.......2007-06-12

It shouldn't take the average reader more than ten minutes to read this book, cover to cover. That's not an exaggeration. And as such, this book just isn't worth the price, any price.

Esther argues with herself over the cost of her locally famous cakes, which she gives to the deserving, especially at Christmas. And she decides that the price she pays is worth it. That's it.

If you must read this, get it from the library. You can read it there too.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Things Come In Little Boxes...........2003-12-22

Esthers' gift isn't a lengthy story...another in the Mitford Series. Yet, in it, I found another "chapter" of life in Mitford. The true 'meaning' of Christmas' which touched my soul. If you keep in mind this book is a 'small' piece of the Mitford life...you'll be thrilled beyond your wildest dreams! I plan to 'try' the cake. Perhaps as some have been 'dissappointed' in it...it 'may' be a 'ficticious recipe'... one that sounds like a real one for the book. It's a 'dandy' of a cake in Mitford...but Jan Karon didn't promise us (anywhere that I read) that it would win a prize at the State Fair! It's a MUST for your collection!

1 out of 5 stars The cake is a bust.......2003-12-16

I have read every Mitford word. I gave this book to friends for Christmas thinking it would be a fun way to get started with her writing. When visiting my sister-in-law I spent a careful morning in the kitchen making the marmalade cake from the copy I gave her. Better move to Mitford and beg Esther to bake one for you because even the recipe is a disappointment. I think of myself modestly as a seasoned baker with 30 years experience. Perhaps Karon's publisher outsourced the job to a cakemix chemistry lab? I did all the painstaking steps and used all the top ingredients; something is off. Maybe Esther gave Father Tim a smudged recipe card? Karon is much better with theology than with the oven. I also feel ripped off by the "industry" of side items to the Mitford books. Let's stick with substantive stories and messages.

4 out of 5 stars An enjoyable holiday tale.......2003-11-20

"Esther's Gift: A Mitford Christmas Story," by Jan Karon, is about Esther Bolick, who is getting ready to bake the orange marmalade cakes that she traditionally makes as Christmas gifts. But economic pressures force her to reevaluate the tradition.

This is a sweet, charming tale that is nicely enhanced by colorful illustrations. The text includes an actual recipe for orange marmalade cakes.

Book Description

"I love reading Lois Gladys Leppard's books! I find it practically impossible to put them down!" writes a young reader from Northern Ireland.

Mandie is excited about going home for Christmas, but she hasn't told her grandmother that she invited Jonathan Guyer and his father to visit them during the holidays. Will Mrs. Taft be angry with Mandie because she doesn't get along with Mr. Guyer? And Mandie hasn't told Joe that Jonathan is coming, and the two boys haven't gotten along well either. Will Joe be upset with Mandie?

Then on a dark, cold night a mysterious gift is left on the doorstep of the Shaw house with an anonymous note attached that reads, "For Mandie." The box has fancy gift wrapping on the outside, but inside is what appears to be a childish jumble of holly and dirt and ribbons. Whatever could it be?

Who sent Mandie the present? Could it be a treasure map?

It's Christmas time, and Mandie is having everyone come over for the holiday. But she is unsure about Jonathan and Joe getting along, and she is quite sure that this is going to be a very interesting vacation!
But then a mysterious package arrives on Mandie's doorstep, and upon opening it turns out to be a box of dirt with strange pathways etched out in it.
Mandie thinks it's a treasure map, and Joe thinks it's a practical joke. Who is right? And who sent the mysterious gift? Find out in 'Mandie and the Unwanted Gift!'

This book is one of my favorites. I thought it was funny how when Polly saw Jonathan, she quickly turned her attentions from Joe to him. Jonathan's coming was actually a blessing in disguise!

5 out of 5 stars EXCITING AND FUN.......2003-03-18

Mandie is going home for christmas holidays and is very excited. But she has one problem or make it two. She needs to talk to her grandmother before the Guyers come, so she won't be mad when they just show up. Mandie doesn't know what's wrong with Mrs. Taft and Mr. Guyer. There's also Joe. She hasn't told him that Jonathan is coming. Will he get mad at her, because the boys haven't exactly gotten along around Mandie?

Then one night before everyone arrives a package for Mandie comes. It's just a "mess" of holly, dirt and ribbins. Joe is sorry that he suggests it is a treasure map because then Joe, Jonathan, Polly and Mandie go on treasure hunts. Who sent Mandie the present. Read to find out the funny ending, how the boys get along with the fact that they're not the only boys in Mandie's life and how Mrs. Taft reacts with the Guyers arrival.

I just love Mandie books. I can read more than one in a day! I can't wait until "Mandie and the night thief" comes out. Are there any others after that one? I want to read how Mandie's life wraps up when she is older. Will she really marry Joe or maybe Tommy?

this book was good, no really good. Anyways.. mandie gets all frustrated thinking that everyone will be mad at her for inviting the guyers over for christmas. But she's in for a big surprise when someone leaves a present on the door step that is nothing but holy and dirt but is it a treasure map?? i really enjoyed this book and thought it was really nice of jonathan to do what he did knowing how much mandie likes mysteries

5 out of 5 stars It's what's inside you that counts........2004-07-12

Roxie Dockery lives with her family in the North Carolina Mountains in 1930. The Depression is raging everywhere in the country, but it doesn't make much difference to the Dockery family. They have always been poor and they've learned to manage very well. Roxie knows that how much money you have isn't important. The stuffing you have inside you is what counts when trouble hits.

And trouble hits hard just before Christmas. Roxie and her five brothers and sisters are all looking forward to Grandpa George and Grandma Vic, her father's parents, coming to visit like they always do at Christmas. And they're looking forward to the candy that their father brings from town for their stockings, too. But snow comes instead. Lots and lots of it. Roxie wakes up one morning, opens the front door, and sees snow filling their whole porch, from floor to roof. All the kids have to climb out a little window and scoop out a trail from the side of the house all around to the door so their father can get out and help them. They use buckets and pans. Then they have to bail a path to the water pump and all the outbuildings. It takes the whole day. Worse than that, more snow comes that night, and the next day they have to do it all over again. They can't walk through the snow to school, Grandpa George and Grandma Vic won't be able to get through the snow, either, and there won't be any Christmas candy from town.

But trouble isn't through with the Dockery family. One morning a few days before Christmas, when everybody except four-year-old John is outside doing the laundry, they hear a groaning sound, and then a loud snap. The big pine tree beside their house, covered with ice, bends and then breaks. Everybody watches it fall on the house, with John inside.

What will they do if they've lost John? What will they do without a house in the middle of a cold and bitter winter? You will want to read this book to discover how the Dockery family face up to their troubles and show how it's what's inside you that counts, not how much trouble you have.

The Christmas Barn is an excellent read and gift for children and anyone that was alive during the Great Depression. I've purchased copies for everyone in my family. During these tough economic times, a look back to harsher times and the true Christmas spirit may make this book a classic one day!

    Book Description

A remarkable story filled with dreamers, inventors, scoundrels, and pioneering pilots, First to Fly recounts North Carolina's significant role in the early history of aviation. Beginning well before the Wright brothers' first powered flight at Kill Devil Hill in 1903, North Carolinians labored at the cutting edge of aviation technology from the late 1800s through World War I.

North Carolina was a launching ground for real and imaginary ballooning adventures as early as 1789. Powered experiments, including what seems to have been America's first airplane, gained momentum in the late nineteenth century. Tar Heel mechanics and inventors also built a dirigible and, arguably, the world's first successful helicopter.

Tom Parramore's account of the Wrights' experiments and turn-of-the-century Dare County provides new information on the crucial role of Outer Bankers in ensuring the Wrights' success. Without this aid, he argues, it is unlikely that the miracle of flight would have first been achieved in 1903--or in America. After 1903, growth in the new aviation industry, spurred by World War I, outpaced North Carolina's ability to play a major role. But the state produced some of the most notable airmen and women of the era, furnishing hundreds of pilots to the war effort.

Set in a North Carolina manufacturing town during the 1950s, it is the poignant story of two ten-year-old boys and their search for an angel doll, a search that turned into a lesson of love.

Every day Whitey Black reads The Littlest Angel to his sister Sandy, a four-year-old stricken with polio. Now she wants just one thing for Christmas: an angel doll. Unfortunately, in this small North Carolina town, no one has ever heard of such a thing. Nevertheless, Whitey Black and his best friend set out to find her one, at great cost and for even greater reward.

Along the way they learn much about sadness and heartbreak, but most important, they learn about the transformative power of love.

The Angel Doll is about childhood reaching out in later life and grabbing hold-never to be forgotten or remembered exactly as it was. Timeless and touching, The Angel Doll is sure to become a family favorite and a tradition for years to come.

A touching christmas story, about the devotion of a little boy who tries to give his four year old polio cripple sister an angel doll as a christmas gift.
The story is narrated by his best friend and paper-route partner.

This is a simple story about devotion and love... Good read.

4 out of 5 stars A Story of goodwill for the Christmas season........2001-12-26

Whitey Black has a chronically ill younger sister Sandy and all she wants is a Christmas angel doll. It is the 1950's and Whitey and his friend are working together on a paper route. The setting is the rural south and friendship is at the center of this wonderful story.

This is the premise to a blessed event that will fill the lives of many sick children for years to come. It is a story of remembrance and benevolence. It is a heartrending tale of a young boys love for his sister. For those of you who enjoy THE CHRISTMAS ANGEL there is a sequel titled, A GIFT OF ANGELS. This is a superb pair of books with appeal for the whole family, a Christmas tradition. Kelsana@yahoo.com 12/25/01

5 out of 5 stars Journey through reality.......2000-10-31

We've known Jerry and Linda just over a year as neighbors. While our interactions with them were somehow special as Jerry walks his dog past our home each day, reading The Angel Doll opened an entirely new journey deep into the heart of the person we knew only casually. Aside from the fact that it is an "easy read" for anyone, the book opened the soul of what we have come to love about the people of the Blue Ridge Country. It epitomizes all that is so genuine and real about those who touch us on a daily basis. As you step each step with Jerry through the lives of those involved in his story, it also takes you through the world in which he lives. Mountain people have always been an interesting study, but somehow the people of the Blue Ridge are different and Jerry has enabled those people to absolutely come to life.

It has a universal appeal to both women and men, children and adults and puts a mirror in front of all of us. There are stories scattered throughout the book to which all of us can relate in our own little worlds. I would strongly advise anyone contemplating ordering the book to go ahead and order the sequel since the two are inseparable and the sequel is a true continuum of the first.

I am amazed at the diversity with which Jerry is so talented and skilled.

Thanks so much, Jerry and Linda for not only the book but your friendship! Also, on a personal note, thanks Linda for the delicious chocolate pie you brought, it was yummy and we could literally taste the love!

      5 out of 5 stars THE AWSOMEST!.......2000-01-21

This is one of the best books I've ever read. It's sad that the boys sister is sick, but glad because he cares so much for her, he wants to by her a book called THE ANGEL DOLL. After he reads her the book she wants an Angel Doll for Christmas. In order to figure out what happens in the story, you have to read the book. I would reccomend this book to anyone who likes Christmas stories, and to anyone who likes sad and happy stories.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2005-11-27

This is one of the best Christmas books ever written. Granted, I'm a little biased--Mutt was my cousin, but I love this book regardless. I read it every Christmas--and am a bonafide member of the Worldwide Twelve Nights Society (read the book and you'll get it!) Buy this book--it's great!! :)

      5 out of 5 stars Memory Lane.......2001-05-01

This book gives a wonderful account of an old fashioned Christmas. Though it is told from Mr. Burton's own experiences, the stories give room to remember your own times of joy. It gives you inspiration to give those memories to the new generations that have joined your family.
