Book Description

The Immune System, Second Edition has been designed for use in immunology courses for undergraduate, medical, dental, and pharmacy students. This class-tested and successful textbook synthesizes the established facts of immunology into a comprehensible, coherent, and up-to-date account of how the immune system works, rather than presenting immunology as a chronology of experiments and discoveries. Emphasizing the human immune system the text has been designed to break down the barriers which often divide basic and clinical immunology. The reader-friendly text, section and chapter summaries, and full-color illustrations make the book accessible and easily understandable to students. The Immune System is adapted from Immunobiology by Janeway, Travers & Walport.

New in the Second Edition:
-Inclusion of end-of-chapter questions throughout the book. Questions consist of a mix of clinical and basic science. Detailed answers to all questions are provided in the back of the book.
-Completely updated throughout.
-Even greater emphasis on human immunity.
-Enhanced and revised treatment of the complement system, including new figures and icons to clarify concepts.
-Increased emphasis on human genetics throughout the book.
-Expanded and updated treatment of innate immunity, particularly the mucosal system.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2007-08-22

This is a good basic immunology book. Easy to understand (even if your background in immunology is minimal). I will definitely hold on to this book for reference.

3 out of 5 stars immunology text.......2007-08-01

this text is widely used my medical schools, however is is long-winded in its descriptions, which sometimes makes the key ideas appear elusive. i give it 3 stars

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book! The diagrams are great!.......2007-05-10

I'm a second year medical student and I used this book for my first year immunology course. My school has a strong immunology course and the syllabus is almost able to stand on its own without a textbook. The important thing is - our syllabus uses the diagrams from Parham's book! Now that I am studying for boards, I am so happy that I can I look at these diagrams to make sense of complicated immune reactions that I barely remember.

I was really happy I bought this book in addition to the syllabus b/c I just really don't have the mind for immunology. It's just not a subject that sticks with me, so I appreciated Parham's clear descriptions. If you like to really understand how immunobiology works, not just memorize things willy-nilly, I highly recommend this book. If you have a strong immuno course, you won't need to read the entire book, but it still comes in handy for the confusing stuff (eg: VDJ recombination, isotype switching, etc).

5 out of 5 stars A good balance of text and figures.......2007-05-07

Pros:
1. Great for the hard core, molecular pathways of immunology.
2. Parham has a keen sense of proper diagram use. He seems to know when written text just won't do the job.
3. Has lots of clinical correlations, which is nice for med students.
4. Amazing photographs, appealing font and layout (secondary, but makes it pleasant to read).

Cons:
1. A minimal amount of information varies from other texts.
2. It's expensive!
3. For a med student, it goes a little deeper than required.

I held out buying the book for a while, due to what I felt was an exorbitant price. Once I finally bought it, I knew it was worth every penny. A book I'll refer to when studying for boards, after medical school and into my career.

5 out of 5 stars excellent book for undergraduates.......2007-03-08

This book is very useful to teach undergraduates the fundamentals of Immunology.

Book Description

At the young age of thirty-three, Nancy Davis was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. The finality of the neurologist's prognosis was devastating: within a year she would be confined to her bed and, at best, able to push the buttons on her television's remote control. Rather than accept a hopeless prognosis, Nancy learned about her illness and, in turn, created a new life for herself with a new health regimen and an expanded range of therapeutic options. In Lean on Me, Nancy shares her deeply personal story and provides a step-by-step guide for taking charge of your own health care in the face of life-threatening disease. Each step offers readers the strategies and strength to carry on when they are feeling overwhelmed and the concrete tools for actively seeking and receiving the best treatment. In the face of a medical crisis, Lean on Me shows how to navigate the health care waters, find hope, take positive action, and celebrate progress -- and supplies authoritative information that can save your life or the life of a loved one.

Book Description

Celiac Disease (CD) is one of the most common and under–diagnosed, hereditary autoimmune condition in the U.S. today. Recent studies reveal that 1 in every 100 people suffer from CD. And 97% of them are undiagnosed. The average time to diagnosis is currently 9 years. In the case of CD (also known as gluten intolerance), the body damages or destroys the very mechanism that enables us to digest food. The primary target of injury is the small intestine. Triggered by gluten, the main protein found in wheat, rye and barley, the disease damages the small intestine so that it is unable to properaly absorb nutrients.

This is the first authoritative guide to CD co–authored by an internationally renowned specialist on the disease. Dr. Peter Green and writer Rory Jones help readers to identify the symptoms, understand their diagnosis and cope with the challenges of living with CD. Incredibly comprehensive, yet accessible and user friendly, this book covers the disease from a medical, dietary and psychological standpoint. It explores all aspects of CD from the often "silent" symptoms and proper diagnostic procedures to the many related conditions and specific diet. The book also includes appendices on related articles and books of interest, medical contact information and a list national CD support groups.

THIS BOOK SHOULD BE READ BY ALL FAMILY DOCTORS> The book contains information on how Gluten effects the body in ways other than just the intestenal tract.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful.......2007-06-27

After having Celiac Disease for almost 25 years, this book was a good review of the state of medicine, thoughts on linkages to other auto-immune diseases as well as diseases in general and the "revised" celiac diet that is used today vs the one I have been on which was stricter.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent celiac book.......2007-05-13

This book, A Hidden Epidemic, by Dr. Peter Green is a very useful book and has much information in it about celiac. I have recommended this to several people new to celiac and they too agree that this has so much information in it relating to celiac. Very helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Leads to an understanding of the current knowledge..........2007-05-12

Celiac Disease: A Hidden Epidemic was an excellent source of information regarding the topic. Written with what seems to be the most current state of understanding of this condition, this book was penned with the layman in mind. However, there is enough detail in the book to challenge the reader to do some research on their own. It is easy to read and if you are afflicted with any of the celiac-related conditions, you will burn through the book quickly. If you have or are interested in Celiac conditions, this book should be your starting place.

5 out of 5 stars Lifesaving Book .......2007-05-12

I stumbled upon this book when it was first released and it changed my world. I had many of the symptoms relating to Celiac Disease and no doctor had ever suggested testing for the disease.

I was relieved to find the reason for my Alopecia Aerata. My dermatologist never said anything about a possible link to Celiac Disease.
I never saw one reference to Celiac Disease in all the literature I got from the Alopecia Foundation. How could that be?

I am angry at how pregnant women with anemia are handled. The medical world assumes that a young woman presenting with anemia is anemic due to heavy menstrual flows. That is a bad assumption. It turns out my anemic condition was due to an intolerance to gluten. So despite how much iron I ingested, I was still anemic. I gave birth to a healthy baby girl who had language delays and was later diagnosed with Autism. She had "pica" (kids who want to eat paper, ice, chalk etc.) Pica is a sign of iron-deficiency anemia. She also had many other symptoms relating to Celiac Disease but the medical community did not connect the dots because she was thriving. How many children with autism or ADHD have mothers with symptoms of Celiac Disease? Pregnant women are tested for so many things. I believe Celiac Disease should also be on the list.

This is an outstanding book that every person in the medical field should be required to read. Patients should insist their medical providers receive better training. The pharmaceutical companies pay for our doctors to be trained on the latest and greatest drug. They don't have an interest in this area because they can't make any money from telling patients to go gluten-free. Our local Gastroenterology Group receives money from a pharmaceutical company for testing a drug to treat irritable bowel syndrome. Those gastroenterologists are not looking for Celiac Disease in their patients with Irritable Bowel.

I have been trying to create more awareness in my little world. I have bought many of these books to pass on to all of my friends and family.

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars!! The only book where is important information is compiled in one place - A Keeper! .......2007-07-14

Bryan Rosner has done it again! As with the rife book, he has brought to the Lyme community useful techniques, many of which, are not well known to main stream America. This information may mean the difference between feeling better, leading a productive life or leading a life of Lyme misery full of mind-numbing fatigue and pain.

Some of this information has taken years of trial & error by Lyme folks to find out what is helpful. This book allows you to leapfrog all that and start using right away what has proved significant.

If you are looking for a reference with every statement footnoted and cross-referenced.... a reference with every technique having a double blind study, then this book is not for you. Much of that information you are looking for, particularly the double blind technique trials does not exist. But if you are looking for cutting edge, practical information for Lyme, then buy this book, I think you'll find it worth your time.

Do these techniques work? All I can say is that on antibiotics alone, I was feeing better, but still struggled with work. Since minimizing antibiotic use over 5 years ago, and focusing on many of the techniques mentioned in this book; I am feeling much better. 2 years ago I climbed Mt. Rainier in Washington and last Christmas, I climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa.

I recommend this book. Thanks Bryan Rosner for putting this information in print, so we don't have to hunt it down anymore!!

5 out of 5 stars A Practical and Very Useful Guide.......2007-07-13

The Top Ten Lyme Disease Treatments

Chronic Lyme patients are unique. Usually it is not just the Lyme spirochete they are left to deal with but those who are chronically ill often harbor several, if not many pathogens. This creates a situation where symptoms can affect every part of the body and there is no way to be sure which pathogen is causing what symptom. With the many allopathic and natural treatments we are bombarded with, especially for Lyme patients with cognitive problems, it is difficult to effectively decide where to begin. What treatments are most effective? How should they be combined? What are our most affordable options, where we as patients have more control?

Many times I have just thrown up my hands in defeat and decided not to deal with any of these questions. Because antibiotics alone seemed to be working for me, the rest was just too complicated to sort out. However, at some point we may not have access to antibiotics for the use with chronic Lyme. Another consideration is that antibiotics don't always remain effective forever, and for some people they just don't seem to work. These drugs can also build up in your system and cause toxic side effects.

This is where Bryan Rosner's book "The Ten Top Lyme Disease Treatments" comes into play. The author has created a practical resource that is organized and easy to understand and implement. Being a Lyme patient himself, he has done much research and experimentation. He offers information gleaned from his experience and the experience of others.

Antibiotics alone have not been the complete answer for curing or effectively controlling Lyme disease. Most people will come to the same conclusion concerning natural treatments. The Lyme disease germ (borrelia burgdorferi) is a very smart bug, is able to evade the immune system, antibiotics and current available testing.

Bryan Rosner's solution is to offer us valuable information concerning both allopathic and natural medicine and how to use them together to form a comprehensive treatment plan. He emphasizes 5 core treatment protocols and other supportive treatments. He suggests that antibiotics be rotated and used for fairly short periods of time. The author warns us that treating Lyme disease and the co-infections is more of a marathon event as opposed to a sprint. If we approach the treatment of Lyme with this in mind, it will help us to avoid discouragement.

On page 293 of Rosner's book he says, " Because Lyme disease is caused by a bacterial infection, the core of a Lyme disease treatment protocol is comprised of antibacterial therapies. The most effective antibacterial therapies are pharmaceutical and non pharmaceutical antibiotics, the Marshall Protocol, and Rife Machine therapy. At all times during the recovery process, at least one of these three therapies should be in use."

Bryan believes that Rife machine therapy should be the foundation of an antibacterial treatment and tells us why. He discusses the Rife Machine in this book but for those who want a more comprehensive understanding of this type of electromedicine, one should read his first book "Lyme Disease and Rife Machines."

The book stresses that we need to strengthen the immune system through diet, eliminating exposures to toxic and allergic substances, detoxification, electromedicine and herbs. He also points out that there is no magic remedy and that patients must become proactive and take the time to adjust their priorities.

Rosner does an excellent job making sure the patient understands what can and cannot be expected from the various holistic and allopathic treatments. Many of us are aware of the raging Lyme wars (disagreement on the testing and treatment of Lyme disease) that are keeping patients from getting proper treatment. Here is what Rosner has to say about that. "The debate has recently reached a boiling point, involving the passions, fears, biases, personal experiences --- and let us not forget, financial interests --- of those involved. Amidst the inferno, it has been largely forgotten that the goal of health care is not to establish exclusive, single-minded medical truths, but instead, to utilize all available medical treatments that cure disease --- regardless of which paradigm they belong to."

There is so much practical information and so many helpful resources listed in this book that I could go on and on but I am sure you would rather read the book. I highly recommend "The Top Ten Lyme Disease Treatments " to anyone who wants to better understand the realities of treating Lyme disease and what it takes to get well.

5 out of 5 stars Best Investment I ever made.......2007-07-07

This is an excellent book and I would recommend it to anyone who has Lyme. I do not know Bryan Rosner personally but was part of a national teleconference and Bryan was the speaker. He has suffered immensely with this disease, and really wants to help fellow sufferers, in my opinion. This book synopsizes all the latest Lyme therapies. The book is easy to understand and Bryan has done an excellent job in sharing all that he has learned in his journey with Lyme. Well done, Bryan!

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Book.......2007-06-12

I consider this book a God-send. It is concise, well-organized, and thorough; no fluff, but well-stocked with the details you need to wage war with Lyme intelligently. It takes the reader all the way from understanding the big picture down to the brass tacks of where to find particular supplements and what websites to visit for more information. It is written by and for someone in the trenches and leaves one feeling competent to fight the fight. Best wishes to anyone needing this book. I think that you will be glad you purchased this one.

5 out of 5 stars Thanks to Mr. Rosner.......2007-05-19

Dear Mr. Rosner,

Thank you so much for the wonderful book you recently published
on Lyme Disease entitled "The Top 10 Lyme Disease Treatments". I was
wavering on the edge of insanity, not only from the effects of the Lyme
Disease I have, but because of the multitude of confusing choices and
conflicting information I have been getting. Obviously, your brain is
working well (again?) as your straightforward and succint style of
writing shows, AND that is some of the main proof that you know what
you are talking about, because you are ABLE to write this book!!! I
haven't finished it yet, but even the few chapters I have read are very
encouraging and lend evidence to my suspicions about long term
antibiotic treatment.
Thanks for helping me to go from hopeless to hopeful in 0 to 60.

A huge hug,
Hilary Macatangay

As many as one in eight women have a thyroid condition. In Living Well with Hypothyroidism, Mary Shomon outlines the most common of these--too little thyroid hormones in the body. Weight gain, depression, fatigue, and what patients call "brain fog, Brillo hair, and prune skin" result. Because the symptoms of hypothyroidism mimic so many other conditions--chronic fatigue, PMS, clinical depression--it can be very tricky to diagnose, especially since patients with HMOs may not get the thorough testing they need.

Shomon knows of what she speaks: she's a health writer and thyroid patient herself. She also manages a thyroid Web site and writes a newsletter on hypothyroidism. In Living Well, she offers an extensively researched guide to this complex condition. She covers conventional, alternative, and late-breaking approaches to treatment--such as challenging the gold standard of Synthroid as the thyroid replacement therapy of choice. (Synthroid replaces T4, the less active of the two thyroid hormones, and Shomon features new research on adding T3--the more potent thyroid hormone--to treatment.)

With her down-to-earth, patient-centered approach, Shomon explains everything from how to choose a thyroid specialist to how calcium, antidepressants, and a high-fiber diet affect thyroid hormone absorption. The book includes a chapter on depression, which is a typical misdiagnosis of hypothyroidism--as well as a symptom that often persists even after treatment. She also covers infertility (women who are hypothyroid don't ovulate as regularly and miscarry more frequently) and thyroid cancer, one of the less common causes of hypothyroidism. She explains how to spot hypothyroidism in kids, and ends with a glossary, international resources, and journal references.

Shomon creates a sense of community by excerpting e-mails from her vast network of patients--voices that bring a sense of humor so often missing from health books. One quibble: she could have avoided the antidoctor stance in the beginning of her book, where she blames physicians, rather than incomplete science, for the misdiagnosis and treatment of hypothyroidism. --Rebecca Taylor

4 out of 5 stars A must have.......2007-09-03

I think this book is great for patients that are undiagnosed. I suspected my sister was hypothyroid like I am but her doctor never tested and had her scheduled for a ton of specialists. I sent her this book and she had a diagnoses within the week. It helped her understand her test results and gave her the confidience to push for thorough testing. The symptom section is great. I prefer Ken Blanchard's book for understanding treatment options.

5 out of 5 stars Great Informational Book.......2007-08-09

I have had hypthryoidism now for 5 fives. This book is so informative. I have referred back to it a million times. The one thing I would like to stress is the fact that doctors only check TSH and/or T4. Somehow, this standard has to change. I asked my doctor to give me a complete test, he refused stating that I only need TSH/T4. Yet I have lost about 1/2 of my hair even though my TSH level is within "normal" limits. I am searching for another doctor who is alittle more open to different approaches. Thanks Mary for the insight!

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-07-23

This is a book that every Hypothyroidism people should have. My suggestion is read this book first before you go to see a doctor. Knowledge you learn form this book will help you in many ways, and many years.

Book Description

Lupus, a disease of the immune system, can be quite deadly, claiming the lives of thousands of patients yearly. Dr. Daniel J. Wallace is one of the world's leading authorities on this disorder, an eminent clinician who has treated over 2000 lupus patients, the largest such practice in America. His The Lupus Book, originally published in 1995, immediately established itself as the most readable and helpful book on the disease. Now Dr. Wallace has once again completely revised The Lupus Book, incorporating a wealth of new information. This Third Edition discusses the newest breakthroughs in drug treatments and alternative therapies as well as updated information on the immune system--all laid out in user-friendly language that any patient could understand. Readers will discover new blood tests and new drugs introduced since the last edition, an extensive table of herbs that can be used for the disorder, and a large section on cognitive therapy and biofeedback. And as in past editions, the book provides absolutely lucid answers to such questions as: What causes lupus? How and where is the body affected? Can a woman with lupus have a baby? And how can one manage this disease? There is also a glossary of terms and an appendix of lupus resource materials compiled by the Lupus Foundation of America. Over a million Americans have lupus and some tens of thousands of patients die every year from the disease. The Third Edition of The Lupus Book offers these patients and their families a wealth of reliable, up-to-date information that will help them manage the disease and live a happier life. 5 out of 5 stars The Lupus Book.......2007-07-23

I was recently diagnosed with lupus. I found this book to be extremely helpful with alot of the questions I had. I would recommend to anyone who has the disease to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars If only all books about Lupus were as good as this...........2007-03-13

I have Lupus, and have bought each new edition of the book as it has come out. It's the best book on Lupus out there. Now I have also been diagnosed with MS, if only I could find a book about MS that was as concise, organized and well written as this one, I wouldn't feel nearly as "alone" in the land of MS as I do.

Thank you Dr. Wallace for such a great book that helped me navigate the uncertain road of being newly diagnosed with Lupus 15 years ago, and for the continued information you provide to all of us who have or are affected by Lupus.

5 out of 5 stars Valuable Resource from an Expert.......2007-01-09

The Lupus Book provides current information by a noted expert on the illness of lupus. I personally use this book as an "encyclopedia" whenever info is needed in my journey with lupus. It has been a comfort to be able to reach for answers to my most immediate questions. Of course it doesn't replace my physician, but it rests at my bedside ready to offer info at any time of the day or night. An invaluable resource.

5 out of 5 stars A God Send.......2006-08-28

This book is one of the best out there on Lupus. Mr. Wallace disects the disease into many parts because Lupus had many frustrating facets to it. After reading this book, I am going to talk to my doctor who does not think that I have Lupus, because I don't fit neatly into a box. I can't wait to tell this doctor that my last blood test showed the anitphospholipid levels were extremely high. I noticed it, he didn't. Thank you Mr. Wallace for naming the symptoms, and the cause of it. My "gut feeling" was right.

5 out of 5 stars I have Lupus.......2006-07-25

I have Lupus and this book is definitely informative to me. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.....

Book Description

With the growing size of the elderly population comes an increased interest in aging as a subject of research and study. Human Aging: Biological Perspectives is written for the one-quarter or one-semester introductory level course and is aimed at students with little or no science background. The main structure of the text follows a body systems approach. In addition to the introductory chapter and a chapter covering molecules, cells, and the theories of aging, each body system is covered in its own chapter.

Autoimmune diseases affect 50 million Americans, mostly women, who frequently remain undiagnosed and untreated, or are treated ineffectively. Living Well with Autoimmune Disease helps readers pinpoint symptoms, find the right practitioner, and learn cutting-edge approaches to reduce symptoms and reverse their disease.

Author Mary Shomon, who has the immune disease Hashimoto's thyroiditis, explains how the immune system is supposed to work, and what can go wrong. Then she discusses more than 20 specific autoimmune diseases--such as chronic fatigue syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, lupus, thyroid disease, Graves' disease, rheumatoid arthritis, type 1 diabetes, fibromyalgia, scleroderma, and multiple sclerosis. For each, she covers symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment.

Shomon, a patient advocate and Web guide for people with thyroid disease, hears the most success stories from people who combine conventional treatment with complementary therapies, so she gives specific strategies for using herbs, diet, and mind/body therapies. She also includes a 30-page checklist of risk factors and symptoms (helpful when you have no idea what condition you might have), a guide to finding and working with the right practitioner, and an extensive resources section that includes patient support organizations, Web sites, and books. --Joan Price

Book Description

A complete guide to understanding the mysterious and often difficult–to–pinpoint disorders of the immune system––and finding the keys to diagnosis, treatment, and recovery.

An estimated fifty million people suffer from symptoms including fatigue, joint pains, depression, or heart palpitations 埳igns that the immune system has turned on itself, causing conditions such as thyroid disease, hepatitis, or multiple sclerosis. And while doctors may prescribe treatments to relieve these surface ailments, when asked about the life–long health implications of an autoimmune condition, they often just shrug their shoulders. Yet much like cancer, having one autoimmune disease puts you at high risk for developing another, and understanding the underlying immune process can reverse a patients approach to a dysfunction––for the author, it changed the way she ate, the vitamins and supplements she took, and the types of doctors she visited. Living Well with Autoimmune Disease is the first book that goes beyond the conventional treatments by showing you how to work on your underlying autoimmune dysfunction with natural and alternative therapies.

4 out of 5 stars Patient-friendly book.......2007-09-09

This is a very helpful book for the millions of people dealing with autoimmune diseases. Shomon does an excellent job of identifying the many different types of autoimmune diseases and their symptoms. She offers many traditional treatments as well as more holistic options. Most importantly, she lets you know that if you have one autoimmune disease, you have a much greater chance of contracting another. I learned far more from this book than I did at doctor appointments.

5 out of 5 stars This has been the best book I have read so far............2007-08-26

This was the most informative book that I have read. I have had fibromyalgia for several years and have had to learn on my own alot of the information that was contained in this one book...a must have for any new autoimmune sufferer.
GREAT READ ! GREAT INFO !

5 out of 5 stars Review of Living Well with Autoimmune Disease:What Your Doctor Doesn't Tell You.......2007-06-13

This is a very informative book. It is well worth keeping on hand for referral. It describes many autoimmune diseases and tells, in many cases, how they are connected. It also tells, whenever possible, how these diseases may get started, what their symptoms are, and how they are treated. Since much of this information is very new to the general public, the book may be of great help to people searching for answers to their own medical problems.

2 out of 5 stars Lacking in Facts / Full of Myth.......2007-05-28

The reason the doctor doesn't tell you: it isn't true.
This book contains a lot of information for the average patient, and it SOUNDS logical. Unfortunately, only about half of it is based on science. In a world where those desparate for solutions are easy prey for snake-oil salesmen and fearmongers, this book leads right to them.

Most of the information of value in the book can be found in simple one-page summaries that many organizations provide (including the NIH and CDC). It lacks anything truly informative and the time reading it is wasted.

4 out of 5 stars Autoimmune Diseases.......2007-01-11

A good start for basic information on a wide variety of autoimmune diseases.

    Book Description

Psychoneuroimmunology investigates the relationships between behavior, psychosocial factors, the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems, and disease. Each system affects the others, enhancing and/or inhibiting processes elsewhere in the body. Research in this field has grown tremendously in recent years as science better understands the checks and balances of these interdisciplinary systems and processes. Introduction to Psychoneuroimmunology provides the first introductory text for this complex field.

Beginning with a discussion of immune system basics, Introduction to Psychoneuroimmunology explores endocrine-immune modulation, neuro-immune modulation, the relationship between stress, contextual change, and disease, as well as infection, allergy, immune activity and psychopathology, and immune function enhancement. This text provides a sound introduction to the field and will serve as a valuable overview to what is otherwise a complex interdisciplinary subject at the junction of molecular biology, genetics, the neurosciences, immunology, cell biology, endocrinology, pharmacology, biochemistry, and the behavioral sciences.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Graves Disease: A Practical Guide, by E. Moore.......2007-05-16

This book is fantastic. It is not a watered down, pandering talk about the subject, but it is a good source of knowledge. I wish my endocrinologist knew this much about the topic of Graves Disease. It is a bit advanced in some places, but many terms are defined and the author assumes that the reader is motivated, but not a medical student. You will probably have to spend some time memorizing terms and looking up some information for complete understanding, but it is all here.

The author also discribes current, past, and also nontraditional treatments and solutions to Graves Disease. There are good chapters and paragraphs that introduce information in a simple and practical way, but there are also chapters with all the details and confusing terminology that will frustrate some readers. I believe that no matter what your level of medical understanding, you will get something of value out of this book. It has definitely given me confidence and hope, especially since I do not trust the doctors who say it is easiest to simply irradiate the thyroid and take a pill a day for the rest of your life... I don't think anything is THAT EASY... This book discusses other options. Check it out-- you owe it to your thyroid. Scotty/Sioux City

3 out of 5 stars Interested in the nitty-gritty technical details?.......2006-02-25

Excellent information. Extremely technical. Not easy to read and understand for the lay person.

    2 out of 5 stars Need a translator.......2004-11-11

I am disappointed in this book mainly because it is so technical and hard to read. The reviews made it sound like it was easy to read, that is one of the reasons I bought it. But, even with a bachelors of science degree, I am having a very hard time getting much out of it. Being thorough is one thing, but it reads like a medical text book with no explanations. If you are in medical school or a practicing physician, you may be able to understand this, but sadly for me, it is way over my head.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for Graves' patients.......2004-11-09

As a fellow author of books on thyroid disease, I'm impressed with the breadth and depth of this book. Elaine raises interesting questions about Graves' treatments, and this book has helped to shape more debate and analysis about treatment options. An excellent companion book to this title is another book for Graves' patients by Elaine Moore: Thyroid Eye Disease: Understanding Graves' Ophthalmopathy, available on Amazon, too! I'm delighted that it's now possible for Graves' patients to have a more complete home library through Elaine's work.

5 out of 5 stars Graves Disease: A Practical Guide.......2004-11-04

This book is an excellent resource - well researched and comprehensive. Moore provides a detailed and understandable tour of the thyroid in relation to grave's, as well as a thorough review of treatment options and considerations. Grave's Disease: A Practical Guide is a must read for anyone coping with this illness.
