Book Description
In celebration of Las Vegas's centennial, Greybull Press has put together the ultimate visual tribute to sin city. An exceptional collection of images of the city as seen through the eyes of many of the most important photographers, artists and filmmakers of the past 50 years, it also includes classic archival images that capture the true essence of what makes Vegas the high/low pleasure capital of the world: its entertainers and celebrities, its winners and losers, the dealers, divas, players and dreamers. The Book on Vegas features landmark images of the desert city's architecture, street life, weddings, casinos and surrounding landscape. Some of the highlights include William Claxton's intimate backstage portraits of Marlene Dietrich, Sammy Davis Jr. and Noel Coward; Elliott Erwitt's iconic image of the lone slot machine player; Helmut Newton's photograph of the secret money room at Caesar's Palace; Bruce Weber's portfolio of Siegfried & Roy at home with their tigers; Grant Mudford's straight architectural photos of Liberace's outlandish estate; Lauren Greenfield and Philip-Lorca diCorcia's intimate portraits of pole dancers; Diane Keaton's mysterious images of hotel lobbies; Garry Winogrand's off-the-strip motel swimming pool; Ed Ruscha's stop-action shots of a typewriter being dropped from the window of a Buick speeding through the nearby desert; Leroy Neiman's painting of Buddy Hackett; stunning film stills from Casino, Koyaanasquatsi, Godfather II and other classic films--and much, much more. With over 300 pages, and 226 exquisitely produced color images, The Book on Vegas is luminous, loud and spectacular--like the city itself. Includes work by Doug Aitken, Guy Bourdin, Sophie Calle, Robert Crumb, Todd Eberle, William Eggleston, Eliott Erwitt, Larry Fink, Lee Friedlander, Ron Galella, Lauren Greenfield, Dennis Hopper, Mary Ellen Mark, Joel Meyerowitz, Richard Misrach, Helmut Newton, Martin Parr, Raymond Pettibon, Jack Pierson, Robert Polidori, Richard Prince, Ed Ruscha, Stephen Shore, Thomas Struth, Larry Sultan, Arne Svenson, Robert Venturi, Nick Waplington, Bruce Weber and others, as well as an essay by the influential art critic and University of Las Vegas professor Dave Hickey.

Urban delight.......2000-05-30
This book is the photographic equivalent to mythical eighties Dennis Cooper novel. Five American photographers, forerunners of their generation, each with a distinct style of his own yet sharing the same subject matters: urbanism, seperateness, violence, Aids, homosexuality, to name a few. These issues are dealt with through the use of portraits, mostly-urnban landscapes and youths. Though some shots are not as good as others, every artist here has at least 2 or 3 gems in his/her collection, and these gems make the book a must.
Book Description
Back in Print Philip-Lorca diCorcia's inventively staged and exquisitely crafted color photographs occupy a special place in contemporary art. Operating in the gap between postmodern fiction and documentary fact, between slick convention and fresh perception, they deliver a powerful emotional charge. The 55 color plates in this book, dating from 1978 to 1994, trace the evolution of a compelling and influential body of work. Beginning with enigmatic domestic scenarios whose protagonists are the photographer's family and friends, diCorcia moved on to an ambitious series in which Hollywood drifters and hustlers are pictured as emblematic figures of contemporary America. He proceeded to deploy his probing curiosity amid the energy and turmoil of big-city streets, reinvigorating a rich photographic tradition that had been dormant for nearly a generation.

Brief review.......2007-08-03
The photographer produces only a few photos each year. The detail and care of his art challenge me to become as powerful in my own work.
Great book!.......2007-04-11
If you're a fan or love photography, well it's a good one. Especially if you're interested in portrait and street photography. Philip-Lorca diCorcia is a must in that field. So, of course, there is plenty of photographs (great ones) but that's about it. This is not the book you want to buy to read about diCorcia. But still, very glad to have it!
Realism and Artificiality.......2000-05-02
In Andy Grundberg's book, Crisis of the Real, he predicts that "the character of photography in the new millennium will be something more overtly fabricated, manipulative, artificial, and self conscious then the photography we have come to know." Interested in this prediction, I have been exploring artists using fiction and theatricality in their work; such as, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Jeff Wall, Eileen Cowin, and Tiny Barny to name a few. These artists are not only questioning the representational authority of photography but also exploring the extent to which artiface takes part in constructing a narrative. In carefully staged scenes, apparently taken from ordinary, everday life, diCorcia's images originate not so much from experience as from imagination. They seem convincingly real, yet are just enough over the top to remind us of how mediated photography can be. I think this is the type of overt fabrication Grundberg was referring to. diCorcia gives meticulous attention to every detail and has a wonderful sense of composition, particularly with the use of color. Many of his pictures will make you laugh, while others may offer an odd parallel to your own experiences. This is an original book, well worth having to return to as a source of pleasure and inspiration.
Book Description
From early amateur snapshots to today’s advanced digital images, photography has been the perfect means to record people’s lives. This provocative book explores the complex and varied ways that five contemporary photographers––Tina Barney, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Nan Goldin, Sally Mann, and Larry Sultan––use their own daily experiences as inspiration for their art.
Each of these artists has created highly personal, shifting, and intriguing visions of his or her life. The works range from Tina Barney’s orchestrated depictions of her friends and family in affluent New England settings to Nan Goldin’s unabashed portrayal of intimate, and often brutally honest, moments. Sally Mann turned to her children and their surroundings as her subject, and Larry Sultan has accomplished something similar in his depictions of his parents. Philip-Lorca diCorcia offers up his “storybook life” in photographs that—like others in this group—span nearly twenty years.
So the Story Goes is arranged in portfolio format and features beautiful color reproductions of about twenty photographs by each artist. With an introductory essay that examines the development of personal narrative in photography, as well as insightful entries on each artist, the book analyzes how these works tell a life’s story.
Customer Reviews:
wonderful.......2006-09-21
This exhibit was excellent and this book is a wonderful summary of the show. A great collection of some of the world's best contemporary photographers for a great price!!!
Book Description
The photographer Philip-Lorca diCorcia is best known for his elaborately staged scenes made to look like real life, in which he meticulously plans every element of a shot-lighting, pose, etc., before taking the photograph, creating the "ur" moment. It is conceptual photography with the veneer of the documentary. As such, his photographs have been integral to contemporary dialogues on street photography, portraiture, and constructed versus spontaneous tableaus. His most recent body of work, entitled Heads, is a departure from this method. Setting up shop in New York City, diCorcia took unstaged pictures of passers by that follow in the street photography tradition of Paul Strand, Walker Evans, Harry Callahan, and Robert Frank. diCorcia's work helps to redefine the genre, bringing street photography into our post-modern world.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting project, but disapointing book........2007-03-09
I am a bit disapointed about the book. There isn't much photographs and I was disapointed by their quality.
The project is interesting but I don't think it is worth a book. Not, in the way it was made.
good idea, but.......2006-07-24
i would check out luc delahaye's 'l'autre' before this for a more "pure" portrait technique, but these are fascinating, simple, and as ron burgundy might say, "compelling and rich."
still, the book has only 40 or so pages, and not a great deal because of it.
Large, Gorgeous, Varied Photos of New Yorkers "Frozen" While Walking Down the Street.......2006-01-06
The 10/2005 issue of Photo District News, a magazine for professional photographers, named this one of the "most captivating and influential photography books" from 1999-2004, so I thought I would buy a copy.
Published in conjunction with a 2001 PaceWildenstein Chelsea exhibition, the book is wide (38cm) and high (30cm). Except for the author & title, the dust jacket and hardcovers are black, befitting the book's contents. A two-page essay by Luc Sante explains that the photos of people "walking down the street" in New York City were taken "with a long lens" and hidden flashes. Because the artificial light was much brighter than the natural, the people appear lit like "stage shots," isolated against mostly black backgrounds.
On the right-hand pages are 17 full-bleed photos of heads and shoulders of people of different ages and races, with differing clothing and facial expressions. The left-hand pages say "head #10," "head #05," etc. in apparently random order (e.g., Amazon.com shows #01, which appears toward the middle of the book). Although you can find small versions of many of the heads on the Web (e.g., #13 became famous in 2005 because the subject sued the photographer for selling it without his permission), these do not come close to the wonderful high-resolution reproductions in this book.
Parr and Badger in "The Photobook: A History" define a photobook as having "each image placed so as to resonate with its fellows as the pages are turned, making the collective meaning more important than the images' individual meanings." This book meets that definition. For a given photo, its placement in the context of the 16 other photos enhances your appreciation of it; you want to compare and contrast the composition of one image with the others. Snap this book up at Amazon.com!

Book Description
The German Stock Exchange in Frankfurt, headquartered in Germany and Luxembourg, has significantly extended its collection of photographs in the last year, acquiring primarily large-format works by upcoming artists. Hence the necessity to produce XL Photography 2, sequel to the two-year-old XL Photography. This volume features photographers who employ an unparalleled range of modes of design and expression, spanning the rather classical black-and-white photographs of Nicholas Nixon and the cool color photographs of Stephen Shore, as well as the innovative One-Minute Sculptures of Erwin Wurm. Under the artistic guidance of Jean-Christophe Ammann, the photographic collection of the German Stock Exchange in Frankfurt places established artists such as Bernd & Hilla Becher, SebastiNo Selgado, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Rineke Dijkstra, Roni Horn, and Jrgen Teller next to younger, as yet-undiscovered talents. This luxuriously designed, large-scale picture book represents all significant positions taken by photography in the past ten years.

Book Description
Description: Yet Untitled collects together a dedicated selection of contemporary photography. Presented in a uniquely straightforward fashion, with strong nods to the grid, this volume presents work with a range of concerns and content. Included are photographers who focus on issues of documentation, such as the "Becherklasse" (Bernd & Hilla Becher and their former students Candida Hafer, Thomas Ruff and Thomas Struth); those who deal in the subjective, following in the wake of Otto Steinert; and those who have grouped themselves around Michael Schmidt since the early 80s. Nan Goldin, Lee Friedlander, Bettina Rheims, Tom Wood and Hiroshi Sugimoto are just some of the international artists featured. Brought together over the last seven years by Hannover-based traffic planner Bernd F. Knne, the work in Yet Untitled offers a fascinating overview of recent trends in American and European photography. Accompanying essays and an interview with the collector explore the historical development of contemporary photography on both sides of the Atlantic.

Book Description
The disparate photographs assembled here were made over the course of twenty years. None of them were originally intended to be used in this book. By ordering and shaping them I tried to investigate the possibilities of narrative both within a single image and especially in relation to the other photographs. A Storybook Life is an attempt to discover the possibilities of meaning in the interaction of seemingly unrelated images in the hope that content can constantly mutate according to both the external and internal condition of the viewer, but remain meaningful because of it's inherent, but latent content. The conscious and subconscious decisions made in editing the photographs is the real work of A Storybook Life. Philip-Lorca diCorcia
Customer Reviews:
Lorca Di Corcia is brilliant!!!.......2007-01-18
HY...THAT BOOK IS AN AMAZING COLLECTION OF BEAUTYFULL PICTURES.Philip Lorca is now one of the best photographers that we can observe. It's really full of contemporary notes ,if you buy this book tou can see a lot of good example on what you could work now. These pictures are like a bunch of frozen's memories of our world is aesthetical for suare...but is also devoted to hunmanity in a frozen way but it is....
i like a lot
really
best regards
I love it........2004-05-28
I have looked at this book over and over again and it means something different every time.
He is one of the greats.
A wonderful book, a beautiful object.......2004-02-04
Although I agree that there are images in this book which should not be included, this is a nice concept piece considered as a whole. And I do somewhat disagree with those that say the landscape photography is weak. I find some of it to be quite striking. One in particular is probably one of the subtlest and most striking landscapes I have seen in recent publications. It's unfair to compare Philip-Lorca diCorcia's work with that of Thomas Struth and Andreas Gursky. This book is wonderful, and well worth the investment.
A VERY POWERFUL AND PERSONAL COLLECTION OF IMAGES.......2003-12-18
According to Vince Auletti in the Village Voice
"What makes "A Storybook Life" so enthralling isn't diCorcia's proven skill at crafting a convincing fiction, it's his ability to invest the whole nearly indigestible enterprise with feeling: longing, confusion, regret, tenderness, dismay, love, and, above all, a kind of bruised optimism. It's the accumulated weight of this emotion-however muffled, disguised, or denied-that gives the work its power as a piece. DiCorcia is no sentimentalist; he's far too smart and too subtle. He's not spilling his guts, he's constructing a riddle that even he doesn't know the answer to. All the more surprising that, in the end, he's also created a piece that doesn't seem to be just about his life, but ours."
I could not have said it better myself.
Take a look for yourself before buying........2003-11-28
If you really like and admire the work of Philip-Lorca diCorcia then this book may be really tempting, however take care, the beautifully lit and composed work that you are used to is only a small fraction of this book. the rest is made up of landscape work which veers away from the rich vein of work that have brought him success, and in many cases these photographs are not that good when compared with the landscape work being produced by many of his contemporarys. Take a look for yourself before buying.
Book Description
Nan Goldin shoots campaigns for Prada, David LaChapelle does Camel cigarette ads, and Jurgen Teller got his start photographing models in i-d, w, and The Face. The debate between aesthetic images and commercial pressure has perhaps never been so relevant and complex as it is today, with the increasing commercialization of the art world, the not insignificant exploratory aspects of fashion photography, and our constantly expanding realm of visual references. To study these tensions and overlaps, Chic Clicks invited some 40 photographers to present both their free work and their published editorials from fashion magazines and advertising campaigns. Photographers well-known for their commercial work offer personal and exploratory prints; those who gained prominence in the fine arts display work they were subsequently hired to do for fashion companies and magazines. Accompanying essays approach fashion photography from various perspectives, from that of cutting-edge fashion magazines to the field of contemporary art photography.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing.......2003-11-14
I love the work in this book and have been seeking out several of the photographers. Mikael Jansson, Larry Sultan, Terry Richardson, Alexei Hay, Antonio Spinoza... the work is amazing. This book is a great collection.
Horrible show.......2002-05-01
I attended the show this book is based on at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston and was extremely disappointed. The photographs selected for the show were without merit and neither my friend nor I were able ascertain what the show purported to illustrate, which is the relationship between commercial fashion work and personal artistic expression. I suggest passing this one by, its not worth it.
