Shag: Art of Josh Agle
ASIN: 081185096X |
Book Description
This is the first major monograph of one of today's most popular and widely regarded artists, Josh Agle more commonly known as Shag. His trademark style is spotted on everything from cocktail napkins and cigarette lighters to his brand identity work for the new Pink Panther film. But Shag is the first opportunity to appreciate the mastery of expression in this artist's primary output his paintings. Gathered together here are nearly 200 wry and colorful scenes of signature retro decadence. Wasp-waisted women in Capri pants and turtlenecked, eye-patched men of mystery host parties where deathly specters cavort with cranky wolves, regal bulls, and blas Adams and Eves sipping martinis. A Shag painting often takes place in the middle of a story whose conclusion could be hilarious, catastrophic, or both, creating a world of endless hinted narratives. Lowbrow gallerist Billy Shire and art critic Colin Berry offer keen essays that situate Shag in the artistic and cultural setting that has spurred him beyond the more predictable work of his contemporaries creating a book that is simultaneously a fantasy playground of crisp lines and sharp colors, and a serious look at one of our most up-and-coming painters.

This is cooool as.......2007-01-31
This is a cool coffee table book, if only I had the money to buy a print! Its great for colour design reference and styles for 50's drawing.
Shag, The Art Of Josh Agle.......2006-02-24
I think this book is a great collection of Josh Agle's retro modern artwork. I also enjoyed the foreword by Billy Shire and essay by Colin Berry, in regards to information on the artist himself. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves bright retro style artwork that doesn't take itself too seriously.
The hippest art book around..........2006-01-29
My husband and I are big fans of Shag's work. I bought this book for him for his birthday and he loves it. The layout is every bit as cool as you would expect and the pictures are brilliant- crisp and saturated with color. A must have for any fan.
Shag-Art Book.......2006-01-15
If you are a fan of shag's art work such as I am this is a great book to display on your coffee table. The only regret that I have is that I wasn't able to purchase the limited edition copy of this book. Amazon had the best deal on the book I purchased by far.
Great book!.......2005-09-27
The is the 2nd "Art of SHAG"-book. This book contains about 200 JoSH AGle-paintings. If you liked the LAST GASP-book "BOTTOMLESS COCKTAIL/The Art of SHAG" you'll definitely like this one. One crit: This book has 224 pages, so what I'd have liked to have included in a book this thick would be more info on him and sketches by the artist (e.g. like in a JUXTAPOZ-issue where his way of working was displayed. Anyway, nice book, of course a must-have for any SHAG-fan...
Book Description
Fine Art Limited Editions, A Catalogue Raisonn, presents the complete prints and posters of Josh Agle, a.k.a. Shag, the Californiabased artist whose bold, bright, irreverent takes on the swingin' styles and of jetsetters, cocktaillounge crawlers, scenestealing supervillains and (literal) party animals have made him one of the most popular painters working today. Shag's paintings have seen heavy demand and rising prices, so Agle turned to high quality limitededition prints beginning in 1999. Collected here for the first time, these 175 prints document the evolution of color, content and composition in Shag's work with illustrated essays. Chronologically arranged and annotated with information on size, print run and date of publishing, straight from the artist's own archives, here are Shag's long soldout limited edition serigraphs, offset lithos and etchings.
Book Description
Light the torches and grab the tiny paper umbrellas - the handbook of delicious tiki beverages is here. In Tiki Drinks, former bartender Adam Rocke selects his favorite tropical libations. The effect of "tiki" or "boat" drinks, says the author, is to evoke the sensation of being marooned on a tropical island with a bevy of insignificant others eager to do your bidding. 50 of the best tropical drink recipes include pina coladas, daiquiris, tropical punches, margaritas, freezes, coolers, and other classics that will conjure island breezes and rolling waves. Lesser-known but equally transporting drinks include such creative variations as the Pirate's Cove, Buccaneer, Zombie, Frozen Mudslide, and Bahama Mama. In addition to serving up liquid exotica, Rocke offers tips on mixers, glasses, and serving techniques - all necessary accoutrements of the pro or amateur bartender who wants to keep the natives restless.

These Drinks Are Lousy.......2004-10-20
Buy this book for Shag's art, not the drinks. These drinks are mostly modern sweet syrupy messes designed to please the moronic masses. Where is the appealing balance of sour and sweet? Not here! If you are serious about good tropical drinks, I suggest you seek out the Grog Log or Intoxica.
Tiki Drinks in Seattle.......2002-04-02
Great Book! I own a number of Tiki Drink Books and this is fast becomming one of my favorites. If you haven't yet, try mixing up a Horny Monkey. My wife says they are actually better if you double the rum.
Viva Shag!!!.......2002-02-21
Not only is this book one of the best collections in my library, but it features one of the greatest American artists of all time, Shag! The artwork in this book is amazing and the recipes are the best.
Tiki Drinks is mai tai roa ae.......2002-02-16
To one tall, tiki glass add stylishly hip artwork from Shag, stir in a compendium of recipes that exemplify the way of Tiki and garnish with a teeny umbrella, maraschino cherry and pineapple slice.
I am enjoying this book immensely.
So, while it is nasty outside, or the cold cruel world has temporarily beaten you down, throw on a little Hawaiian music, crack out the shaker and mix up a Malaysian Dream or two. A perfect way to unwind.

Book Description
For almost a decade, the radical art group Flame Rite has been producing Zippo lighters featuring the work of prominent comic artists. These "miniature billboards" that normally display a corporate logo have been reinvented as witty pop-art confections. Charles Burns's ominous Smoking Skull, Daniel Clowes's creepy-comic Eightball, Big Daddy Roth's wacky Rat Fink, the fabulous retroisms of Niagara's All Girls Are Bad and Shag's Ooguh Booguh all these and more (130 total) are on lurid display. The book includes the work of more than 30 prominent artists including R. Crumb, Daniel Clowes, and Shag, exclusive, previously unpublished art from 20 artists in the Flame Rite lineup, and every "metal canvas" that Flame Rite Zippo produced, featuring rare and out-of-print models.
Book Description
Light the torches and grab the tiny paper umbrellas — the ultimate guide to delicious tiki beverages can be found in this colorful boxed deck of cards that features retro hipster artist Shag's witty illustrations. In this variant on Tiki Drinks, former bartender Adam Rocke selects his favorite luau libations and cool cocktails. The effect of "tiki" or "boat" drinks, he says, is to evoke the sensation of being marooned on an exotic island with a bevy of insignificant others eager to do your bidding. Fifty-two of the best tropical drink recipes are featured here, including piña coladas, daiquiris, punches, margaritas, freezes, coolers, and other classics that will conjure island breezes and rolling waves. Customer Reviews:
GREAT coffee table book........2003-08-17
This book is beautifully produced, and contains a lot of great information. It's been the starter of many a conversation an discussion of all manner of topics.
Tiki Fans Rejoice!.......2003-03-22
A comprehensive and enjoyable read. Spectacular visuals, ranging from a pictorial history to pure fun. A must-have for anyone interested in tiki culture.
Art Fun: Tiki Facts & Lore.......2002-10-16
A good read and a great look! Wonderful photos of the "real" tikis as well as contemporary re-incarnations in sculpture of Schmaltz and popular paintings by Shag. In a refreshingly non-academic style, the short readable essays offer lots of facts about the lovable, fascinating tiki icon past and present.
For the die-hard tiki fan.......2002-08-18
If you're a die-hard fan of tiki culture and art, this book will make a nice addition to your collection, but I've seen better. The book was filled with a LOT of photos of ethnic carvings... many of them not too tiki-like in nature. The back of the book, however, has several terrific, whimsical Shag art prints, so that makes it worth a look.
Dawn of Magic.......2002-01-04
Night of the Tiki will enlighten you to all the sensorial beauty, mystery, and majesty of this
ancient art form. It will also show you the Tiki's place in current culture and its influence of
various art genres. The book tells this tale with beautiful photography and poetic
words.
It is a purely entertaining, enjoyable read into the privative world of tribal art that still has a
place in toady's world.

Customer Reviews:
A Calendar You Won't Regret Having.......2004-02-09
This is a great calendar! Shag is one of my favorite artists. His style is truly unique and his artwork definitely puts you in a retro-lounge kind of mood. It takes you back to the wonderful ultra hip, ultra chic, ultra cool, ultra lounge, ultra laid back, cocktails & martinis era of the 1960's. This calendar also exhibits some of Shag's more humorous and playful side as well. Each month will take you to a different part of the world, from Venice to Rio, to Paris and Tokyo. This is a great introduction to the world of Shag, but also for those who are already familiar with his work, it's another great way of having his work in your home (especially since all his prints sell out so quickly!). Be sure to check out his website: www.shag.com
Looking for Shag's Around the World in 80 Drinks BOOK?.......2003-11-05
If you already have the calendar and are trying to order the book, here's what you have to do: under the calendar image at the top of this page, click on "Hardcover" (Paper over board). This takes you to the book page. You gotta have both of 'em--the calendar art is perfect for framing in 2005, and the book is a great coffee table reference for all your favorite illustrations and recipes!

Mish-mash of frivolity.......2004-02-07
Despite a couple of good recipes to add to my files, this book is useless. Get the recipes off of the 'net and save your cash for barware. Add this book to the ever-growing pile of uninspired eyecandy issued forth from the Shagmart.
Shag art and awesome appetizers!.......2002-05-31
If you love Shag's art like I do you may buy this book just for that. Let me tell you there is so much more. I had a party this weekend and made three appetizers from this book and there were no leftovers! Jalapeno poppers made with corn flakes!!! CRAZY! If you are adventurous and love to make your guests happy this is a great book to get! Also get Shag's Tiki drinks...the Horny Monkey is a crowd pleaser as well!!
dig this funky art.......2002-02-28
I love Shag's bold style and bright colors. This is a great book to just toss on a coffee table. All my friends pick it up just to flip through the art. It's a real eye catcher and conversation starter. I bought his last book, Tiki Drinks, too, and both make a nice little collection to have on display.

OK, but not what I expected.......2002-02-13
I have been waiting for this book for several months, and was a little disappointed when I finally got it. It features 8 party ideas, such as Bongo Beat Bash and Island Luau. Each of these sections features several interesting cocktail and appetizer recepies, as well as related Shag artwork. All of this is OK but more than a bit sketchy. Except for a bare-bones introduction at the front of the book, there is nothing from the writer on how to throw these parties; even some basic fashion, decorating or organizational suggestions would have been good. I can plan a tiki party with the best of them, but it's still nice to consider other ideas.
Not bad overall, but also not a shining example of retro chic either.
Book Description
Romance and dating can be such a challenge these days — it’s not always easy to tell if your potential mate is fun or freaky, normal or neurotic (or, perhaps worse, neither). Writer Eve Lederman has been there and decided to share what she’s learned in this humorous how-to. Featuring the illustrations of everybody’s favorite retro artist, Shag’s Little Book of Love is not your mother’s guide to love and romance! Lederman offers hilarious advice on the everyday details of romance and dating, and navigating the minefields of flirtations, entanglements, and hanky-panky. There’s the instant love letter (to make your mate swoon — or smack you upside the head); first date do’s and don’ts (don’t stroke her wattle); suitable topics for discussion (Has there been an exciting natural disaster lately?); and more. Shag’s sharp graphics add panache to this much-needed guide by the doyenne of dating.
Book Description
In this handy little guide major mixologist Adam Rocke joins forces with retro artist extraordinaire Shag to offer atomic-age drinks for any mood, event, or lifestyle — all inspired by, and starring, the Pink Panther. In 52 recipe cards, some of them appropriately pink, the book presents such luscious libations as the Clouseau, a blend of bourbon, cherry liqueur, triple sec, and light cream that pays tribute to the bumbling but beloved inspector; the Pink Panther, a mix of gin, dry vermouth, crème de cassis, and other exotic ingredients guaranteed to slake any thirst; and the Inspector Dreyfus, a sweet-sexy mélange of bourbon, gin, and cherry syrup that’s ideal for retro relaxing. Rocke’s expert creations and Shag’s bold, '50s-style graphics make this guide the fun last word on the subject.
