Book Description
One hundred years ago, Edward Sheriff Curtis began a thirty-year odyssey to photograph and document the lives and traditions of the Native peoples of North America. This monumental project was hailed by The New York Herald as "the most gigantic undertaking since the making of the King James edition of the Bible."
In this landmark volume, almost 200 of the finest examples of Cu rt is's photographs are reproduced with startling fidelity to his original prints. Produced to the very highest standards, Sacred Legacy presents Curtis's work without compromise for the first time in the modern era. Taken together, these profound images constitute no less than the core and essence of his life's work. Until now, virtually none of Curtis's photographs have been reproduced in a manner that captures the clarity and richness of his original master prints. In Sacred Legacy, his greatest images are reproduced from the finest source materials available -- a significant number from breathtaking platinum, gold, and silver prints. All have been carefully selected for pub lication and for an accompanying international exhibition by Curtis authority Christopher Cardozo.
In an effort to bring a new understanding to Curtis's monumental work, Sacred Legacy was developed according to the organizing principles set forth by the great photographer himself. Following the path la id out in his 20 volume magnum opus, The North American Indian, geographic regions are presented separately and individual tribes within each region are depicted and described. Interspersed between these sections are compelling portrayals of those aspects of life common to all tribes, among them spirituality. ceremony, arts, and the activities of daily life.
With The North American Indian, Curtis achieved the impossible: an extraordinary 20 -volume set of handmade books composed of nearly 4,000 pages of text and 2,200 images presenting more than 80 of North America's Native nations. Luminous, iconic, and profoundly revealing, the pictures that form the heart of the original project are reproduced here in Sacred Legacy. These extraordinary photographs had an immense impact on the national imagination and continue to shape the way we see Native life and culture.
Sacred Legacy is a fitting testament to the profound beauty, meaning, and complexity of Indian life and to Edward S. Curtis -- a man whose wisdom, passion, and strength drove him to devote thirty years to capturing the nobility and pride of the Native peoples of North America. The photographs in this brilliant volume represent the most important presentation of Curtis's work since the publication of the first volume of Me North American Indian nearly a century ago.

Absolutely Beautiful.......2007-08-21
I absolutely love this book, the photagraphs are stunning. As a Native American of the Plateau Tribes, I love to browse through the photographs and see the images of my ancestors. My family consists of many different tribal Nations, from Coastal to Plateau and Plains, so it is nice to see the faces and the land as well as the clothing during the time these images were taken.
perhaps a generation too late.......2007-06-20
The many photographs have a hazy sepia tinge that somehow adds to the distancing from us, the present day readers. Curtis did an amazing and sympathetic photographic survey of native Americans in the early 20th century. His collection epitomises the changing view of natives, to the broader American society. No longer were they portrayed as bloodthirsty savages. Instead, Curtis took care to show many natives in peaceful surroundings. Often, getting on with everyday chores. A distinguishing aspect is that few of the photos show them brandishing weapons.
Keep in mind that even by the earliest photos, there were very few "wild" natives left in the US. Years earlier, they had been defeated by the US army, and the survivors often relegated to reservations. So what the photos show are domesticated peoples. Nomadic no longer, even if their forebears had been so just a generation ago.
In this sense, Curtis was a generation too late. Had he been a contemporary of Matthew Brady, he might have given us a visual legacy of peoples that were more unassimilated. Though of course he would have risked real injury to himself, in doing so. Still, we should not complain. Curtis did well with what he had, in the era he inhabited.
"Take a good look. We're not going to see this kind of thing much longer. It already belongs to the past". .......2005-07-27
Edward Sheriff Curtis dedicated his life's work to documenting the customs and lifeways of the Native American peoples of North America. This extraordinary book includes some of the best photographic examples from Curtis' twenty volume masterpiece, "The North American Indian," one of the most significant representations of traditional indigenous culture ever produced.
Curtis was one of two official photographers for the 1899 Harriman expedition to Alaska. On his return, he stopped in northern Montana, accompanied by George Bird Grinell, editor of Forest and Stream. There he witnesses the deeply sacred Sundance of the Piegan and Blackfoot tribes, a sight which transformed his life. Grinell said to him at that time, "Take a good look. We're not going to see this kind of thing much longer. It already belongs to the past". It became clear to him then, that he was to record, with pen and camera, the life of the North American Indian. By the time the last volume appeared in 1930, little remained of the ancient traditions of the peoples he photographed.
Beginning in 1900 and continuing over the next thirty years, Edward S. Curtis, sometimes called the "Shadow Catcher" by tribes' people, took over 40,000 photographs and recorded ethnographic information from over eighty American Indian tribal groups, ranging from the Eskimo or Inuit people in the North to the Hopi people of the Southwest. In the end, the work comprised twenty textual volumes and twenty portfolios with over 2,000 illustrations.
"Sacred Legacy: Edward S Curtis And The North American Indian" was compiled and published to honor the 100th anniversary of Curtis's project to photograph the North America's indigenous peoples, and is a sacred legacy. This impressive volume beautifully reproduces in luminous images 200 of Curtis's greatest photographs from the finest source materials available - a significant number from platinum, gold and silver prints. Christopher Cardozo, an authority on Curtis, carefully selected the photographs for publication and for the accompanying exhibition. Writers who contribute their work here include: Joseph D. Horse Capture, N. Scott Momaday, and Anne Makepeace.
The photographs are organized by tribes and culture areas, encompassing the Great Plains, California, the Southwest, Plateau Region and Woodlands, Pacific Northwest, and Alaska. These reproductions represent an artistic masterpiece worthy of any collection. This volume is a fitting tribute to Curtis's genius.
"The passing of every man and woman means the passing of some tradition, some knowledge of sacred rights possessed by no other." Edward S. Curtis (1868-1952)

This book is a treasure.......2001-04-07
The works of Edward S. Curtis are monumental and beautiful. This book reproduces them with stunning clarity capturing the luminescence of his orotones remarkably well. The text serves to convey the rich meaning behind the photographs. For anyone interested in photography, art, or the story of the Native Americans, this is a treasure not to be missed.

Book Description
Few creatures inspire our admiration and awe as do horses. Whether galloping full-speed through a grassy field, tenderly nuzzling a foal, or gazing calmly into our own eyes, these creatures embody a rare range of emotions and spirituality. This collection of the finest photographs taken by equine expert Gabrielle Boiselle showcases the world's most noble horses in some of the most spectacular natural settings on earth. Culled from her unmatched personal archive of equine photographs, these images are the fruit of several decades of intensive research and personal experience with horses. Breathtaking in their composition, the photographs in this volume serve to present a comprehensive portrait of a complex, multifaceted animal. A photograph of a massive wavy-maned Friesan galloping along a beach in the Netherlands expresses the sheer joy of unfettered movement, while a series of images of a white Lipizzan stallion performing aerial maneuvers reveals the remarkable discipline these creatures are capable of. Accompanying the glorious photographs is an insightful text that offers unique insight into horse behavior and emotion, based on the author's extensive research and real-life experience of the subject. A handsome tribute to the beautyâboth physical and spiritualâof these magnificent creatures, this volume is a comprehensive work to be treasured by horse and animal lovers of all ages.

There's something magical, almost mystical, about horses. Our earliest ancestors felt it--on the walls and ceilings of the caves of Lascaux and Altamira are magnifcent images of horses that were painted 40,000 years ago.
In Dream Horses: A Poster Book, Bob Langrish, one of the world's leading equine photographers, continues the tradition of celebrating the beauty, the power, and the mystery of the horse. Horse-crazy kids will be enchanted by the book's 30 spectacular poster-size photographs. Horse-loving adults who appreciate fantasy photography will be awestruck by Langrish's superb compositions. With the sure hand of a master, he has manipulated these images so that each shot has a fantastical, even mythological quality.
These dreamlike scenes, accompanied by inspired text, tell a story that is otherworldly, and yet still familiar.

Perfect Horse Lover Gift.......2007-07-01
The first customer, Luan Gaines wrote a perfect review. I too bought this for my one of my little girls who loves everything & anything horses. She looks at each & every page over & over. The rest of the world just melts away when she & I have this book open. This poster book of horses was beautifully put together. Sheer genius!!! Stunning photo after photo! Your horse lover will treasure this gift forever.
enchanted horses.......2007-01-24
This picture book is full of beautiful pictures of horses. All of them are amazing and beautiful. All of them, however, are pictures of horses in motion. A lovely sight, undoubtedly, but I also enjoy pictures of horses in stillness, and in this regard, the book comes empty.
The stuff of fantasy.......2005-03-05
I ordered this book expecting a series of beautifully photographed horses, but was stunned by the creativity and exceptional quality of the 30 poster-sized images, the outstanding work of the leading equine photographer. Page after page of gorgeous horses are posed against backgrounds of air, water, sky and color. Each page is accompanied by a small amount of text, but I must confess that I was enthralled by the fantastical photographs.
The animals appear as though in the land of myth, floating through the clouds or splashing in the foaming surf, their manes blowing, captured in each perfect moment, page by page. Whether the white horse rearing, or three black beauties at leisure, these pictures are the stuff of fairy tales. I keep expecting to see a horn, the hallmark of the mythological unicorn.
I bought Dream Horse as a gift for a little girl who loves horses and was delighted by her response to this exploration of the beauty and fantasy of these animals. She fell in love with these portraits, urging me to look at each new image, her eyes sparkling with the joy of a new-found treasure. This book is an excellent gift, a combination of myth, fantasy and magical horses fit for a princess. Luan Gaines/ 2005.
Book Description
More than a hundred extraordinary portraits—lush, rich, textured, sculptural—that reveal the spirit and nobility of the horse. Portraits of horses gazing at the camera, standing in the golden light, stamping away flies, galloping, bucking, rolling in the dust.
They are the work of Michael Eastman, a self-taught photographer influenced by Edward Weston, Walker Evans, and Henry Moore, who spent thirty years capturing the essential nature of subjects that range from Cuban life to landscapes to architecture in many places. Now he turns his refined eye to the magnificent horse.
Eastman has caught the animal’s complexity and power, fear and courage, goodness, masculinity, femininity, uniqueness.
“All animals are wonderful,” says Eastman, “but horses are truly mythic.”
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful book!.......2007-05-10
Words cannot do justice for the photos in this book. Michael Eastman is without a doubt divinely inspired. The photos are emotional, touch the heart, and are genuine artwork. I bought this book for my mother who loves horses, but anyone who appreciates photography will enjoy it. It's a lovely treasure.
Photoshop Overkill.......2006-08-27
There is no doubt that Michael Easton is a talented photographer, so his over-manipulation of some of the images in the book was disappointing. I'm sure he had a purpose--some emotional reaction of his own to the pictures he'd taken--and he intended to elaborate on that emotion for the viewer, but my reactions must have been significantly different from his, as much of the reworking left me confused and unhappy. Still a great collection of horse photos for the horse lover, but not what I expected.
Equus.......2006-03-16
The Horse has for centuries represented power, whether as the bearer of gods and heroes or flying a la Pegasus through the constellations of myth and night skies. They are massive creatures, but they are likewise creatures of great sensitivity and beauty.
Michael Eastman has captured that extracorporeal essence of the Horse in this impressive volume. The photographs are majestic even when they are close up shots, details, or casual settings. It is just the way Eastman has with the camera that draws the extraordinary from the animal's presence.
Whether viewed individually on a wall as an art piece or collectively as in this fine volume, Michael Eastman has the gift for finding that spiritual moment that assures us that these beauteous creatures will remain as heroes, now and in future yet to be created myths. Grady Harp, March 06

Book Description
With the superior artisanship and eye for the natural horse that has made him the world's most celebrated photographer of horses, Robert Vavra presents a book of all-new images, profiling eighteen stunning equines spanning six breeds: Arabian, Andalusian, Morgan, American Saddlebred, Friesian, and Peruvian Paso. As in Vavra's most popular books, all are alone and running free in glorious natural settings: a white Arabian in a sun-washed desert; a black Friesian galloping in snowdrifts; a gray Andalusian amid violet flowers; a chestnut Arabian prancing in autumn leaves.
These lush photographs are accompanied by poetry and are followed by text and drawing that profile each breed, highlighting the particularly outstanding traits of each horse depicted. Vavra pays special attention to the Andalusian, providing an essay on its romantic history. Presented on natural, handmade paper,
Horses of the Sun fuses the beautiful simplicity of Vavra's earlier works with a new, fresh image of horses. For anyone who loves horses or simply appreciates the finest of photography,
Horses of the Sun is a lovely gift -- a paean to this most beloved of animals.

If You're a Vavra fan, you'll like this book..........2006-02-16
Overall, I'd have to agree with the reviewer's comments from Lakewood, OH.
Anyone familiar with Vavra's work will recognize his dreamlike, romanticized approach to horse photography. More "artsy" in style, tone and layout - than the straight forward approach.
Lots of soft-focus photography with heavy post-production image editing (layering of horse upon background, and vice-versa). I own two of Vavra's books (this being the second one to "Equus: The Creation Of A Horse"), so whether or not one likes this style of equine photography is a matter of personal taste. Still, this is a beautifully printed and bound book, with some outstanding equine photography.
See my review of "Equus: The Creation Of A Horse" for further reviews of Vavra's work.
Forward by William Shatner (yes, Captain Kirk!).
If you are a horselover and enjoy books on equine photography in general, check out the work of Gabrielle Boiselle, Johnny Johnston, Henry Dallal, Fulvio Cinquini, Jennifer Forsberg Meyer, et al. All have made their career photographing horses, and it shows. Boiselle is a personal favorite.

Book Description
Wild horses roaming free under the big skies of Montana and Wyoming. The image is a powerful symbol both of the nobility of the horse and of the pioneer spirit of the American West. But do these wild creatures really still exist? They do, and they’re here in panoramic photographs that reveal the animals in all their majesty.
In the Pryor Mountains, ranging along the state line between Montana and Wyoming, there lives a band of wild horses — the Pryor Mountain Mustangs — descended from the original Spanish horses brought over by the Conquistadores. These wild relatives of equine royalty live, browse, roam, challenge, fight, and mate much as they have for hundreds of years.
Here is the extraordinary photographic journal of the three years Lynne Pomeranz spent studying, admiring, and photographing these magnificent animals. The inner lives and relationships of 25 horses emerge in intimate photographs accompanied by stirring text. Witness the dramatic competitions between stallions as they vie for supremacy, the tender bonds between mares and their offspring, and the joyful play of each spring’s newborn foals.
The Pryor Mountain Mustangs will claim a special place in the hearts of horse lovers and nature enthusiasts of all ages.

Unique and gorgeous.......2006-11-07
AMONG WILD HORSES: A PORTRAIT OF THE PRYOR MOUNTAIN MUSTANGS is a gorgeous image-laden photography book from an art photography who spent two years tracking and photographing the Pryor Mountain Mustangs. Her full-page, full color photos of these wild horses in nature are unique and gorgeous: observations of their special challenges and actions accompany the visual treat.

I loved this book! .......2006-09-24
While first perusing and then going back to carefully read this incredible pictoral essay of these magnificent animals, I felt awe and respect for both the animals and their resilience in nature.
The photos evoked in me curiousity and want to see these animals, but also tremendous admiration for the sensitive work of Photographer Lynner Pomeranz. For in her gentle way, we see the texture, color and beauty and the plight of one of the last wild herds of stallions. To see the rugged environment in which these animals survive, brings about a connection with the animals, the land, and the spirit of the horses captured through the lens of this photographer.
The text is supportive and helped me to understand the plight of these horses. So many times the text can get in the way of the photos, but in this case it was interesting and informative.
A truly amazing book.
Horses in the Wild ...Living the way God meant for them!.......2006-09-20
I have never read a book like this....where the pictures and the text are SO linked and pertinent to each other. Each word of each sentence flows so evenly and beautifully. The photos were exquisite and were full of impact. The story of horses in the wild...living the way God meant for them.....is SO dramatic and tragic at the same time. I can only imagine how wonderful it would be to observe the Pryor Mountain Mustang's daily life myself. This is also a story of how people and politics, past and present, have done such a horrible job in preserving our heritage..... as illustrated with these wonderful, wild and ancient horses. Luckily, there are a few caring people, like the author Lynne Pomeranz, who are able to open the eyes of other caring people with books such as this one.

Equus: Finding the Mystery and Majesty .......2005-12-08
Christopher Makos has done the impossible: he has successfully elected to extend his special gifts as a portrait artist of famous people and as a sensual documentarian of the male nude to the realm of animals. EQUIPOSE is a survey of supple and wondrously articulate images of horses that goes far beyond the curious eye and enters the realms of sensuality/spirituality.
Makos uses the same observation skills for which he has earned acclaim in books and magazines and applied those skills to capturing the musculature, the sheen, the power and the disparity between the surface and the underlying massive musculature of the horse. In tender close-up details Makos allows the light and his eye for detail to marry and the result is our being able to observe the veins, the individual flicks of the mane, the eyes, the torsos and the legs of these beautiful animals is inspiring.
If it sounds as though this portfolio is about sensuality then the reader is justly prepared for this particularly satisfying foray into yet another realm of the prodigious gifts of Makos. I am reminded of the play 'Equus' in which a boy's psyche is closely bound to the horse. That is the kind of romanticism that Makos captures. And the results are stunning! Highly recommended. Grady Harp, December 05
Gidddddeup!.......2005-11-03
Christopher, you have done it again! And this time, with my favorite animal!
The photo's are INCREDIBLE! I just love horses...believe me! I love mounting them; riding them; talking with them; not talking with them!
This is truly one of your best works so far!
A Horse of A Different Color.......2005-11-03
Christopher Makos is one of the most exciting photographers working today. In this gorgeous new book, he has taken one of the most perplexing of all animals - horses - and demystified them with his incredible and candid shots and angles. A must for any horse lover, or anyone who simply admires the beauty of amazing photography.
Makos in the Winner's Circle reviewed by In the Know .......2005-10-26
Makos trains his practiced eye on horses and comes up with a fresh point of view. This book is a departure from his usual subject matter of objects, artists, and young men, yet the Makos aesthetic is present throughout. The photographs are beautiful and striking depictions of horses and the equestrian environment. Makos has achieved the rare coup of giving the viewer a new take on a classic subject. This is not a book of horse photos, but rather a new book of Makos photos that happen to be about horses.
Fine book.......2005-10-26
Its a fine addtion to any photography book collection. Chris is an amazing photographer. He has a great for eye for classic beauty. This is a new direction and a good one. Its very collectable, as all of Makos books are.
Book Description
A beautifully designed, full-color photo-essay celebrating the intimate bond between some noted equestrians and the horses they own, ride, train-and love!Leading man Richard Gere fell for a girl on horseback. For actress Alfre Woodard and her daughter Mavis, the connection with horses is spiritual. Chevy Chase says his Icelandics "get very hairy during the winter, but then so do I." And Robert Redford, recalling his month-long ride down the old Outlaw Trail that Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid rode, says: "What I marvel at is how wild and free this land still can seem from the back of a horse." In People We Know, Horses They Love, we meet nearly thirty celebrity horse lovers, from Whoopi Goldberg and Christie Brinkley to the original horse whisperer, Buck Brannaman and bestselling author Tami Hoag, who's also an amateur international champion dressage rider. Gorgeous, full-color, never-seen-before photographs capture the majesty and grace of the animals, the beauty of the ranches and stables where they reside and intimate moments shared with their owners. Whether highlighting Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward on their ranch for special needs children, exploring Hilary Duff's passion for wild mustangs, hanging with Jeff Bridges on the set of Seabiscuit, or illuminating the interior lives of Maria Shriver, Morgan Freeman, and many others, People We Know, Horses They Love pays tribute to the special relationship between human and horse. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Pegasus Therapeutic Riding Program.
Customer Reviews:
Visually and documentary beautiful!.......2007-09-27
I have seen this book before and decided to get it for myself, so I can ponder over the different chapters, and personages at leisure. Filled with one surprise after another, the book delivers photos masterfully done, interwoven with stories of people we know that share a common bond... horses. It is a great gift for the horse lover or the person that likes to read about people in the world of celebrities. Again, I must emphasize that the pictures are truly stunning and well composed. Having been a photographer for over 40 years, I always pay more attention to the details, composures, and art-full feel of pictures, and these photos are charming and "story telling" in their own light. One picture is worth a thousand words, is very true in this book. Buy it, enjoy it, keep it and give it.

Cute book for the kids and celebrity followers.......2007-06-10
This book has some really well taken photography shots of people and their horses. It dosen't lie in its title...alas..the title is incredibly accurate...it shows a bunch of celebrity with their horses and a few with the dogs also.
Did I say the photography was wonderful?...It is.
The choice of the persons included in this book was well thought out..as she included several minority persons for which I give high marks for doing so..as minorities are very poorly represented in most equine books.
The horse crazy among us..(like Myself) will devour this book in less than 30 minutes if you read it..and even faster than that (maybe) if you just look at the pictures. Teens..young adults...minority horse lovers should jump on it...because it contains people that you have seen ..that could be you or your kids in it..and for that reason..it is excellent for the younger crowd too !!!
It isn't smart..or difficult..or magical...or knowledgable......its a good look at American Celebritys the horses they own..and how they got connected to them.
Not Enough Horse, Too Much Hype.......2005-06-24
Where should I start? With the many blurry, grainy photos? Or the photos of celebrities and horses that are hugely under exposed so the "background" can come shining through? I thought I'd get to see celebrities with their horses - in focus. Disappointing photography.
The interviews sound somewhat "canned" and "redundant". As though the celebrities were asked to fill in a form and then the interview was written from the form.
Why two stars? Page 1, Richard Gere and his horse; Page 13 Robert Duvall and horse; Page 89 Kim Novak and her horse.
People Magazine in hardcover with lots of horses.......2005-03-26
This oversize book with photographs by Linda Solomon is exactly as advertised by the title. We see photo-montages of stars like Robert Redford with his favorite horses. The text burbles on about his screen credits and career and the Sundance film festival. Robert Redford talks about his (horseless) childhood and why and how he learned to ride. The other stars that Rappaport and Wilkinson interview and photograph are Gisele Bundchen (super model from Brazil), Chevy Chase, Robert Duvall, Richard Gere (who raises Appaloosas), Melissa Gilbert and Bruce Boxleitner, Whoopi Goldberg (who currently doesn't own any horses, so was photographed with NYC's finest mounted police), Kelse and Camille Grammer, Joe and Billie Perry (Friesians), Katharine Ross and Cleo Elliott, Jane Seymour (who prefers driving to riding), Maria Shriver, Robert Wagner and Jill St. John, Jeff Bridges, Christie Brinkley, William Devane, Morgan Freeman, Kim Novak, Jack Palance, and Dennis Quaid.
The book has two other, shorter sections titled "Pro and Show" and "Healing Hands, Healing Horses." My favorite interview was with ex-jockey Julie Krone. What a gutsy, determined athelete! There are also short articles on the U. S. Equestrian Team, Dressage, and horse healer Buck Brannaman.
"People We Know, Horses They Love" is a pleasant hodge-podge. I would recommend it to star-struck teenagers who also happen to love horses.
Great book for fans of horses and movie stars.......2004-12-27
I've been a horse lover since I got my first pony at the age of six. I am also a working entertainment reporter, so I am always on the lookout to talk to celebs who have horses -- but this book taught even me a few things! Who knew Chevy Chase has Icelandics? That's my favorite breed!
People We Know, Horses They Love is not only very well-written and informative, but the pictures are beautiful too. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because that rating for horse/picture books is reserved for Robert Vavra :)

Book Description
Deep in the heart of Philadelphia, past row houses and vacant lots, run-down playgrounds and dilapidated schools, is a little place called Fletcher Street. It has everything one would expect to find down an alley in the ghetto, with one addition: horses. The men and boys of Fletcher Street have used their passion for riding and bonds with their rides to build their and their community's sense of worth. They describe their passion for horses as having kept them from the temptations of street life. Fletcher Street by Martha Camarillo documents the lives of these men and the boys they mentor, who board their horses in abandoned houses or makeshift stables, and ride them through the streets of Philly.
Camarillo's work is valuable not only because it illuminates a fascinating new aspect of culture, but also because it challenges those who see it. Her photographs force viewers to confront their own preconceptions of sport as representative of social status, and race as a demarcation of class. The power of Camarillo's exploration of this underrepresented community is based on the strength of the men themselves: urban horsemen who have ridden away from the 'hood and toward a better future.
