I LOVE this book because I keep returning to it and making so much use out of it when I work with some of my clients. A few of my clients have also commented on this book and how helpful it was in explaining some things that were happening in their lives and how they were responding to certain life events and people. If used properly a great resource for clinicians and patients. Supplements the other Jeffrey Young Schema Therapy text and very much designed for the lay person and client to use. Reinventing Your Life is a powerful opening to taking a closer look at ones self and the conditions that we place ourselves into without a second thought. This book exposed the many negative thoughts that enter the mind and that we embrace without questioning the information or intention of the information. I'm proud to say that I no longer struggle with negative thoughts and/or behaviors after reading this book. Of course, something works only if you are willing to conscientously put the steps into action.

Lifetraps -- No Longer a Lifelong Trap.......2007-03-02

Excellent book on how to apply a combination of psychodynamic, Gestalt, and Cognitive Behavioral techniques to oneself (through self-help) or others (in counseling). Based on the idea that there are "maladaptive schemas" starting in early years of development, ways are outlined for identifying, experiencing, and then challenging and replacing these "lifetraps" with improved and more satisfying functional coping skills. The authors originally developed these methods for personality-disordered (Axis II, DSM-IV TR) Clients but this is the "popular" (and I think the more useful and better-presented) version of their original book on the topic. The concepts apply to everyone across the board and are not limited to people who have a "diagnosis" or are in "therapy."

This is the only diet that has worked for me. I have sent this book to a number of my friends, I weighed 365 when I got the book. I have lost 76 pounds. I lose one pound per week. I am at 289 and shooting for 225. I was morbidly obese. I learned a lot. I scorned spuds - now I eat them every day. I thought fish was a diet food. I no longer eat avocadoes or peanuts. A Mickey D double cheezeburger costs me 2 pounds each. It puts on a pound and I dont't lose a pound that week. Same with BK's Whopper JR. I used to buy a double cheeze burger on the way to food shopping -- so I wouldn't be hungery while shopping. I don't do that any more. I am now in the habit of driving straight home after a trip to town and not stopping in for a burger on the way home -- like I used to. I tried all the other diets--and none of them worked. When I go to an all you can eat buffett, I fill up with fruits and vegetables. I am just as full as I used to be eating the non VEGAN food. The first few months on the diet, the VEGAN food would not sustain me for more than about three hours. Now that I have been a VEGAN for some time, the VEGAN diet sustains me as long as the meat diet used to. I went to my friends Bar

THIS IS A VEGETARIAN BOOK.......2006-12-06

DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK unless you are a vegetarian or willing to change to one! I bought this book along with "Fat-Burning Foods and Other Weight-Loss Secrets." The title is very deceiving. While it does give you information on the fat and calorie content on certain foods, it does not give you advice on how to balance your meals if you eat meat; this book is just telling you not to eat any animal product or saturated fats. That's it!!! If you are thinking about either of these books, I would definitely prefer "Fat-Burning Foods and Other Weight-Loss Secrets." It has more information, and it doesn't stop you from eating meat!!!

An excellent PART of losing weight.......2006-07-05

I was initially very excited about the concept of the negative calorie diet, as it gave me the impression that I'd be able to shed pounds while eating as much as I wanted. But the truth is I still felt hungry even when eating tons of vegetables. In either case, there is most likely an archive of slides and negatives which cannot be directly integrated into the new digital workflow, nor can it be archived in a digital format. This knowlegdgable and articulate assessment of scanning, hardware and software is very targeted for the serious hobbists, diys as well as professional. I found numerous excerpts that matched perfectly with my semi-professional (small and local photo conversion business) level of experience, which added much credibility to the rest of the book. Especially strong, detailed and valuable information was presented on the Nikon Coolscan 5000, which is our scanner. This is the best of my scanner books and it gives us a few more accurate and helpful options in pulling out the best images from our scans. The printed photographs themselves were in such high detail that they clearly illustrated what the author was writing about. These photos coupled with the articulate text make this book a technical show and tell of scanning. I highly recommend this book as a valuable resource to my fellow photo scanners.

Great Reference For Photo Editors.......2007-06-22

For any professional or amateur photo editors out there, one of the trickiest things to do and do well is scan pictures and get the output to look as good as a regular film or digital print. Whether it's scratches, dust, or other artifacts, negatives and slides rarely look perfect and it's no exact science to getting things to look better. Have no fear though, there is a book for YOU! 'Scanning Negatives and Slides: Digitizing Your Photographic Archives' by Sascha Steinhoff takes this subject matter and lifts the hood up to get into the nuts and bolts of how to create fantastic digital results with little effort. Packed with 200+ pages of material spread out over 15 chapters, the author talks about the basics of how to choose equipment to digital editing techniques to storing and backing up your images to learning about the different tools out on the market for manipulation to... well let's just say there is a lot of meat contained within these pages!

rocknook really has taken the editing and multimedia publishing world by storm, putting out solid, colorful, and well edited books. This title is no exception and it is easy to recommend. If you work with negative and/or slides, you owe it to yourself to pick up this book and learn the art of producing a better end result.

Dan Burkholder gets the credit for introducing digital negatives for contact printing processes several years ago, but it is Ron Reeder and Brad Hinkle who have finally worked out a system that produces extremely repeatable results. Now photographers everywhere can easily harness the power of Photoshop to create stunning prints using just about any contact printing process available. I have personally used this book to create salted-paper prints, van dykes, cyanotypes, and silver gelatin prints with pleasing results.

I teach alternative processes year round in Denver, Colorado, and as any instructor knows, the easiest way to hook a student on something new is the accessibility of the process. Even my darkroom shy students are taking notice of the work a small handful of pioneering students are experimenting with at our school using this excellent text. One student exclaimed to me just last week "this book will save the darkroom".

If you are looking for a system to harness the power of Photoshop with the beauty of a hand-crafted print, this is the best resource available!

AT LAST! a book about digitnal negative making... that is about making digital negatives........2007-05-29

This book has been a long time coming. after spending countless hours on my own, then experimenting with another well known book by dan burkholder (who has some good ideas but ultimately is outdated and there are really only a few pages that deal with 'inkjet negative' making.) this book has answered many of my long standing questions of how to create your own curve for output and then be able to check your work for accuracy. to many resources tell you to buy one specific printer (which by the time the book is printed has been discontinued), one specific ink, and one specific printing media (OHP was discontinued by its manufacturer), and if you do not then their cookie cutter curve will not work exaclty correct.

so thank the authors for sharing this information in a very down to earth way. it has opened a new door in photo printing for the masses.

The last few years have seen alternative photographic processes grow in use. From the street studios in Providence to the booming gallery scene in Chelsea, hand-coated emulsions are a popular counter to the photographic digital revolution.

Brad Henkel and Ron Reeder have deftly organized the work flow necessary to produce the high quality large format negtaives necessary for many of these processes. Their "Digital Negatives.." provides clear simple instructions (along with PhotoShop curves and calibration step wedges at their [...]) for the artist who wants to launch quickly with minimal theory. The book also has excellent detail for those who seek more (The Quadtone RIP profile instruction is top quality).

I found their explanation of calibrating PhotoShop curves to print media very clear and easy to practice. The two authors have expanded on the groundbreaking work of Dan Burkholder (Making Digital Negatives for Contact Printing) and Mark I. Nelson's "Precision Digital Negatives", but have kept their processes open and very approachable. Key screen flows are presented for both the Mac and PC environments.

The book also includes a number of fine art and practical process illustrations (How about a Becquerel contact Daguerreotype from a D1x RAW file!). I would strongly recommend this book for the alternative process artist who is ready to move from litho film and pyro developer to digtial contact negative production.

In addition to your computer, you will need a scanner and good quality inkjet printer, as well as Photoshop CS, to get started.

I found the book very helpful and easy to follow! I particularly like the fact that you can go to chapter four and start printing really great negatives. I made some platinum prints and after a little trial and error on my mixture and exposing time I was able to get pretty nice prints. I am a bigginer and found the book easy to understand. Hope it helps!

I have thousands of books on psychology/self-help/mental health and this is one of the books that I always keep handy to refer to, as others have mentioned as well. This book had a profound, positive impact on my life and my thinking. It affirmed alot of what I already knew but never saw in print, and there are alot of things that I never knew or read in any other book. If you are only going to buy one book today, make it this one. I highly recommend it and you won't regret it.

"He" wrote the greatest self-help book of all time and Daniel Rutley has written the second. This book is your back-up bible! It is captivating...it is humorous...it is a melody for your mind and emotional development as a sweet song is to your heart...it is an attainable truth that is buried within our cluttered, busy psyche... and "Emotional Entrapments" provides the tools in clear step-by-step "now what do I do" scenarios, to arrive at clear, emotionally healthy solutions.

I bought this book because I loved the No Cry Sleep Solution. After reading the first three examples and the "hidden" messages, I was completely disappointed and returned the book. I found that I didn't even need to finish reading the chapter to guess at what the message was. In one of the chapters, Pantley uses an example from her own parenting. I thought, okay, now she's going to share with us one of her mistakes and how she learned from it, and was about to give her some credit for being honest with her readers. Unfortunately for me, in this example she comes out having done everything correctly (not doing her child's homework project for him) and a number of her son's classmates' parents are in the wrong. Don't we all know that the child should do his/her OWN homework? And maybe by not allowing him/her to do the homework, we are saying that he/she isn't capable of doing it? Or that mom or dad will always be available to tackle the complicated stuff? I don't think that we need a book to figure that out. These messages are anything but subtle.

Reading this book has been a seriously eye-opening experience for me. While I "knew" that our children are little sponges and take in everything around them, I had no idea how many "hidden messages" I was giving my daughter that were so negative. I truly saw myself as an excellent and attached parent, and I still do, but this book has truly called me to a deeper parenting model. Not everyone comes from a wonderful family of origin, and this book showed me how many things I was passing on that I had no intention of teaching my daughter. I recommend this book to every parent!

Powerful eye-opening messages that expose the errors in our innocent daily actions with our children. Each chapter opens with a very typical and common parent-child situation. You'll be nodding in agreement as you'll see yourself displayed clearly. Then the author presents a description of the Hidden Message shown in the action and you'll stop and restructure your thoughts on the insightful take on a seemingly harmless interaction. For example, if you always do for your child by packing his lunch, tieing his shoes, cleaning his room then you may be robbing him of the ability to take care of himself. Every parent should read this book - and the younger your child the better. Excellent.

Once again Pantley has done it. What a fabulous window into myself and my children. I must confess that I think I am a most devoted and conscientious parent. With a background in early childhood education, I feel well prepared to competently reer my two boys. But Elizabeth's book has me re-examining some of my everyday decisions, such as cleaning up after my three year old or staying after him to do it. More importantly, reading certain scenarios was a reminder to me that every interaction with my children has an impact on their fragile little developing personalities. And frequently the impact is more far reaching than I anticipate.

Hidden Messages is not only valuable information. It also compellingly written by an author who is as competent and experienced as she is earnest and compassionate.

This book is a "must read" for parents!

If film shooting is interesting to you (and you should; I'm 26 and grew up with cameras, then I move to digital, and recentlly, I discovered the wonders of a darkroom and BW prints) then this book is a MUST Well, the whole series)!!! there aren't enough words to emphasize my feelings over the 3 books of Ansel Adams (camera, negative & print)

If you don't believe me, then please take a deep look at Ansel's master BW work... that should convince you!!!

learn the zone system.......2007-05-30

Ansel Adams was a master of photography but not the most exciting storyteller , in my opinion.

This book is one that you should read as part of a complete education in photography, but there are some long sections in it. The parts of the book explaining Adams' zone system are very worthwhile and great stuff. Much of the rest of the book is only interesting if you are shooting film (not digital), as it deals specifically with darkroom processing.

Read about the zone system here or somewhere else, but learn it. If you are a film photog, read this whole book. For digital shooters, you might want to read only the sections of interest.

a great classic, one little remark for the publisher........2007-04-24

This is an excellent book that will help experienced and newcomers in photography. Pay attention to the Zone system that Adams has devised. It will realy help you take total control over your pictures with a helpfull and very creative perspective. The last part of the book (developing negatives) might be ommited by the person who is into digital, although it helped me comprehend a lot about the various Adobe Photoshop features and relate them to classic photography.

One little remark I have to make is for the publisher. The book is printed into gloss paper (all the three books in the series) with a high reflectance index. This results in dificulty reading the book at certain angles.

Outstanding companion to The Camera.......2007-01-31

A must read. The explanation of the zone system is outstanding. I had taken a number of skyline photographs of Austin which when reviewed by professional photographers got 2 thumbs up. After looking at them with a critical eye on exposure and armed with my new understanding of the zone - I retook those same pictures and WOW. What an amazing ability to move your camera off of matrixed metering and know how to really set the exposure for what you want to show. Also helps you understand the tradeoffs the camera is making in it's exposure settings so you can be more purposeful in changes you might make. A critical read if you also intend to ever move into large format photography.
