Good, here's better.......2007-09-01
Packed with useful information to help you understand your camera and how it works, illustrated with uninspiring photos. For a fast track to better photos, an introduction to exposure, a quantum leap in the percentage of keepers, and stunning photos that teach each concept, Understanding Exposure: How to Shoot Great Photographs with a Film or Digital Camera (Updated Edition) is more effective, more inspiring, and an easy read, to boot.
Choosing and using equipment.......2007-07-18
This book provides an overview of equipment available for digital photography (in 2005). Busch begins with a brief introduction of types of digital cameras and how they were developed. Then he describes how digital sensors work and provides implications for equipment. Next, he explains some common SLR controls, such as exposure and focusing. He describes how dust can get into digital SLR cameras and how to clean mirrors and sensors. He also explains the differences between various digital image formats. The next section of the book covers equipment choices in greater detail, such as general lenses, and lenses for special purposes such as close-ups or sports. Towards the end of the book, composition and special techniques such as infrared photography are covered briefly. End material includes a glossary and in index.
Although the book covers a wide range of digital photography topics, I found it didn't address my needs at all. Busch assumes that readers will be experienced and skilled SLR camera users, so he devotes much of the text to describing digital equipment, rather than describing how to use an SLR camera. This book has made me more informed about the equipment that is available for digital SLR photography, but for instructions on how to do SLR photography, it seems I will have to study a film-based SLR book. I'm sure there must be differences in technique between film-based and digital SLR photography, but this book isn't a great resource for learning them.
Excellent overview of digital SLR photography .......2007-03-31
This book covers every aspect of photography using a digital Single Lens Reflex camera. It comprehensively explains all features and how best to use and take advantage of them. Nothing is missed. Most useful for anyone graduating to digital SLR from compact forms of digital camera, or from 35mm SLR cameras. Highly recommended.
Good information but similiar to other titles.......2007-02-23
I purchased this book after reading another title by the same author - Mastering Digital Photography. I thought this book would go into more detail regarding SLR cameras. This book is very similiar to Mastering Digital Photography and includes much of the same content. The book(s) are good, however, I would not reccomend purchasing both titles.
Easy to read and understand.......2007-02-18
This is a very comprehensive book and the author really knows how to convey difficult information in an easily understood way--he is a born teacher. I loved this book, since I went from knowing very little about digital photography to feeling I can carry a technical conversation with anyone on the subject. I have since found this author in other publications, so he is pretty prolific. I like his writing style and will buy more books by him.

Customer Reviews:
Very Misleading Title.......2007-09-03
Only 25 pages (Chapter 8) out of almost 400 total actually talk about making a print. The technique the author uses is highly based around the trial and error method. A Master printer, in my mind, should be able to hit it on the first print not after experimentation and a lot of testing. If that is not enough to lose interest in this author, there are some serious mistakes in those 25 pages as well. For instance page 268, there is a reference to the Print Space Profile--Same As Source. Anyone who knows how to print, knows that Same As Source is used ONLY to print a Target. I didn't see any reference in the book to a Target. I don't think the author knows what a Target is. This Book is a big disappointment for me. Take out Chapter 8 and come up with a different title.
For all photo printer users.......2007-06-20
This book will help any digital photographer/printer to learn about printing phtographs.
Aged commentary still somewhat useful.......2007-01-04
This book is getting mighty long in the tooth. It addresses inkjet printers from long before they became so good and useful. The approach to CMS, or color management systems, is superficial, and does not even address tools available when the book was written. It completely skips color spaces and the understanding of light and color.
However, it does give a broad beginning approach to understanding color printing. If you are just beginning to learn, this book is a good introduction covering many of the topics you will need an introduction to. Once past the introductory phase of learning, this book is of little value, being to basic in its handling of subjects to really be useful.
Take your digital printing to the next level.......2006-09-06
Mastering Digital Printing is a comprehensive manual/textbook for the professional photographer or artist who demands the knowledge to control every aspect of his/her final output, as well as the printmakers who assist them in this process. From printing techniques, file management, history, paper selection, every aspect of printing is here. The photos and bios of printers, artists, and photographers in their studios is helpful to see the layout of the workspace and creative ways of using the space available. This is the book you need to take your digital printing to the next level.
More about how to spec printing equipment than about making prints.......2006-04-20
This handsome volume badly disappointed me. I think the proper rating for the book is about one and a half stars, but I gave it two out of generosity.
If you don't have a printer and are looking to buy one, it gives a pretty good round-up of the choices, technologies, and papers. The problem with this kind of thing, of course, is that it is necessarily dated--so it can't really serve as a buyer's guide.
If you already have a printer--I have an Epson 4800--and a source of digital images, you won't find much information here about how to make great prints. The only section on the actual print making process shows the dialogs for one printer, probably the author's. Totally unhelpful unless you have that printer (and you've probably already figured out how those dialogs work if you have that printer).
The section on RIP software is way overview, and doesn't provide any decent guidance on how to proceed with it.
I'm not given to writing negative reviews, and I don't often return books (as I am with this one), but in the face of all the positive feedback for this book I feel compelled to provide my opinion. As I said, if you are looking to buy a printer, this might help you understand the basic technology issues (although the models have changed since the book was written). Otherwise, the only use I see for it is as a "gee whiz" coffee table book for would-be digital printers rather than a serious reference manual.

An Okay book for Photoshop novices.......2007-07-13
This book has a lot of good information in it, but is not well written. You may be halfway through a paragraph before you get to the topic sentence and figure out what the author is talking about. It often takes a second or third trip through a paragraph to figure out what it's about. The author also is not consistent with his word usage. I've found as many as three or four different words used for the same thing. For instance luminosity and brightness are used interchangeably, sometimes on the same page or even the same paragraph. So, using the book can be frustrating, though the author clearly knows Photoshop and I have learned a lot from the book.
The book does not mention or discuss some of the neatest features of Photoshop CS2 including some of the Automate features such as Merge to HDR (high dynamic range). This feature combines an underexposed and an overexposed picture into one high dynamic range image (bright areas are not washed out and dark areas are not black). This is an amazing capability that is not mentioned.
I would buy this book again, but only after searching diligently for one that covers the same scope or more and is better written. Actually, I'd probably get a book that covers CS3 as well, and hopefully indicates where features are unique to CS3. Or maybe just a CS3 book if you are going to upgrade. I understand the upgrade to CS3 is well worth the price even though it is now $200. Ease of use alone makes CS3 valuable to novices from what I've read.
Good Addition for Photoshop Middle Skill Users.......2007-05-21
Mr. Smith's book is well illustrated and supported by the accompanying CD (images to work with that are in the book). His explanations are clear to the Photoshop user and he does explain some terms, as in methods of cropping and re-sizing an image and which method is suited for which type of image), file formats of images, and other areas like the applications under adjustments that I had not used until I began working with the book.
I have found some techniques that are similar to other authors (Scott Kelby, in particular, whose books I have enjoyed quite a lot), and that was part of my interest in purchasing the book-to broaden my reference library with people aside from Kelby, Deke McClelland, and some folks on-line like Earth-Bound Light and Photography, etc). I recommend purchase. Readable, well cross-referenced, and helps deliver results.
Excellent.......2007-05-08
Excellent training material. I would also recomment The Photoshop CS2 Book For Digital Photographers by Scott Kelby. The combination is outstanding.
Good Book.......2007-01-20
I am an amaetuer photographer. This book has helped me fine tune my photos and bring out its full potential. I will gladly recommend this book to anyone who wants to gain more knowledge on photography and perhaps learn a very powerful photo editing tool.
[...].......2007-01-10
This book covers a lot of complex material and some details.
The explanations are generally very clear, but to get the most from it you need to work through the exercises (on CD) and probably re-read the sections that might still be a little difficult to follow.
If somebody looking for step-by-step and good tip and tricks this book probably isn't for you but you'll find a lots great tips.
If you're willing to put in some effort you'll be able to make amazing improvements to your photos. Strongly recommended.

This is a comprehensive well written book with generous clear illustrations. The book covers equipment to processing to presentation. There is a very good section on commercially available equipment from point-and-shoot to DSLR's. Equipment changes quickly but with the information in this book you should be able to acquire the right equipment and and take great images for years to come. Whether you are taking digital images for documentation, publication or patient presentations, this book covers it all.

Customer Reviews:
A good starting point for learning fine quality digital black & white photos.......2007-06-09
This book presents an introductory exposition of techniques for producing "fine art" black and white images from digital color images. Its intended audience is amateur digital photographers and Photoshop users with limited experience. The technical depth of the discussion is fairly high-level. The book is laid out in a glitzy fashion that indicates heavy influence from the graphic arts department. In this regard, the book is better suited for coffee table display than for use as a workroom reference.
The book divides its discussion into five chapters:
· The Language of Mono
· Color into Grayscale
· Digital Black and White
· Image Editing and Effects
· The Print
The Language of Mono
This is good place to start a discussion of black and white images, by looking at what makes black and white images work. Here, the author introduces his "case study" method, where he uses an image as an example to illustrate his points.
Color into Grayscale
In this chapter, the author explores ways to use the Channel Mixer in Photoshop to manipulate the individual color channels for red, green and blue to produce the black and white tones intended by the photographer. He also introduces the technique of manipulating hues to control tones. Again, he uses case studies of individual images to illustrate his ideas.
Digital Black and White
In this section, the author explores the management of tonal ranges using Photoshop. He discusses setting white and black points to expand tonal range, and introduces methods for managing scenes with high dynamic range. Zone System is introduced, and the author briefly discusses scanning images.
Image Editing and Effects
In this abbreviated section, the author introduces ideas for modifying images to enhance mood. He also provides brief introductions to concepts including adding color tones (e.g., sepia), using duotones and other print finishing techniques.
The Print
In this final section, the author presents a brief discussion of printer types (dye-sublimation vs. inkjet). He introduces the concept of printer calibration, and goes on to introduce ink issues (mainly suggesting external ink supplies). He finishes with a brief discussion of print mounting and display.
Critical Assessment
Clearly, the real value of this book is in introducing the reader to the concepts involved in digital black and white photography. The discussions that have the greatest value are in the first three sections, where the author provides the greatest depth. Topics broached in the final two sections are passed over too lightly to add much to the readers understanding.
Taking the first three sections on their own merit, however, they do justify the price of the book. Although introductory in scope, they delve deeply enough into the topics to provide real help for beginners. There is enough here to keep beginning photographers busy for some time, exploring the techniques he describes. Soon enough, however, students will reach the point where they will need additional information not provided in this book. To be fair, many of the topics the author covers lightly are worthy of books in themselves. For example: the author devotes four pages to zone system, but manages to say nothing that might actually help the reader understand what zone system is about. (I recommend reading Ansel Adams' The Negative again. Just remember, in digital photography the zone system admonition to "expose for the shadows, develop for the highlights" morphs into, "expose for the highlights, expose again for the shadows." And, while you're about reading Ansel Adams, The Print has much good information. Just skip all the lab chemistry parts.)
The layout of this book is such that it is not so much read as explored. Major content is provided in sidebars and captions. The heavy influence of the graphic arts department in the layout can be annoying at times, for instance when it is unclear which supplementary text belongs with which main text, or when an entire column is devoted to a pull-quote in large type of a paragraph we just read on the preceding page. The book does not invite highlighting with a marker or scribbling notes in the margins (it would seem almost a desecration).
On balance, I am glad I discovered this book. It provided me with essential help in getting started with black and white digital photography. I was disappointed that the book lacked the depth to help me with steps beyond the first, so in this sense it does not live up to its title, Mastering Black and White Digital Photography. The book would have more accurately been titled, Introducing Black and White Digital Photography, which it well accomplishes.
Excellent B/W Digital book for Intermediate to Advanced.......2007-05-15
This book is an excellent reference for intermediate to advanced photographers. Absolute beginners would need a basic photoshop book to help fill in the gaps or details to understand some techniques instead of blindly following a recipe.
The author has brought together under one book a large variety of creative ideas and techniques that not too long ago were only available from a collection of books and magazine articles. It's written in concise 1 to 2 page sections and in many places use a sequence of images to show the different steps of a process. Most of the images are very suitable to demonstrate that technique.
I can see how this book could seem confusing and disjointed in places as described by other reviewers, especially to an absolute beginner, but there is so much good stuff in this book that I would consider it a definite must have reference for any serious Digital B/W photographer. A second edition could fix some of these issues, e.g. key information being relegated to captions under images vs. in the text and minor tweaks to the logical sequence of a few topics. Adding summary outlines of the steps would make it even more useful for quick review and reference instead of wading through the text and images every time. However, the book is still very useable. These suggestions would just make it clearer. As a photography instructor, I have applied and taught several of the methods in this book. Using this book has further clarified my understanding of Digital B/W techniques to create compelling images.
One area of weakness is that this book lacks a good comprehensive section on image composition. This would make it more complete as a useful class text book. B/W imagery lets you look at composition in it's elemental form without distractions from color. If the author could round up a good collection of images demonstrating various composition and design concepts in a revised edition, I would go as far to say this book has the potential to become a "standard" intermediate text on B/W Photography for the digital era.
Freeman's insight.......2006-07-24
As a professional photographer I found Michael Freeman's book to be the most informative and concise study on the complex and somewhat baffling world of digital photography. He is a master of his craft and opens one's eyes to the major developments. His writing and illustrations are supberb, he simplifies what could be compex adjustments and tasks.
Excellent, a must for any serious photographer.
Thanks Michael
Disjointed.......2006-07-24
I did not care for the 2 page snippets used to describe most of the topics in this book. In addition, the book did not seem to flow well. For example, some black and white conversion techniques were listed in one part of the book, whereas others were listed in other chapters, making it difficult to find and compare them.
Significantly, most of the key information was not included in the text itself, but rather in captions accompanying the images. Not only is the font size for these captions small, but sometimes it was hard to determine the proper sequence of the images.
While this book does provide some useful information, I have purchased other books that are both more informative and better written.
Excellent book on B&W techniques with Photoshop.......2006-07-15
Whenever I read a photogrpahy book such as this one, I always carry around those little plastic post-it notes to mark any important pages. After reading it, I found that I had marked almost half of the entire book! Freeman explains different ways of converting color files to black and white using layer masks, contrast, desaturating, and everything else. The great thing, though, is that he gives you solid examples and a step-by-step process for each one. He tells you how to fix a washed-out sky that unbalances the photo, how to manipulate each color when it has already been converted to black and white and why this is such a useful tool, how to work with skin tones, how to get great contrast without clipping, and even how to use layers with each color. As a bonus, at the end of the book he talks aboout printing; what inks are good, what paper is good, etc. A very thorough and easy to understand book with great detail. I recommend this book for anyone interested in B&W photography or B&W Photoshop techniques.

Book Description
Photoshop 7 Artistry is the book for serious professional photographers and digital artists who need to create expert imagery. This book will help you master the relationship between Photoshop tools and traditional photography. Photoshop Artistry is probably the most successful advanced-level Photoshop book available. It's initial appeal for photographers has been transcended; the basic principles the authors teach apply to all Photoshop users-particularly more-advanced users-and the advent of digital photography has further boosted the book's popularity. Covers creation and output of museum-quality art prints, images for high-end advertising, as well as GIFs, JPEGs, and Web Photo Galleries

Excellent manual...!!.......2004-04-26
Excellent book on Photoshop. There are many books out there which spend to much time going over the obvious but this book differs from that in its approach. If you are a beginner I probably wouldnt recommend this book, but if you have some experience with Photoshoop you will find this book an excellent way to extend yourself. Easy to read and well layed out. The book has a quality feel and is full of useful information...Highly recommended...
Open the Door to the Potential of Photoshop.......2003-12-10
This is the best Photoshop book I have read. Its subtitle, "Mastering the Digital Image," says it all.
As one works through the step-by-step exercises and tutorials, the serious photographer begins to understand the complex relationship between the Photoshop tools.
Tutorials are explained in a simple and straightforward fashion. The explanations are grounded in reality, but offer a doorway to understanding the program's theoretical basis.
The book is not cheap, but it is a tremendous aid in unlocking Photoshop's potential.
Seemed like a good book but..........2003-11-04
It's true. The book is packed with detailed information. But it's mostly the information that I do not care to know or already know. I guess I shouldn't have bought this book because I primarily wanted to know about color correction. So I read about color correction from this book, and I was surprised yet disappointed when not much info on how to write Curves were included. The methods of using Level to correct a picture are rather simple and for beginners only. The before and after pictures are not that big of a difference compared to other books I read.
My Photoshop & photography bible ..........2003-05-17
This is a comprehensive guide to the use of Photoshop for the production of photo art. It covers clearly just about everything you need to know to turn your scanned or digital pictures into publishable images on paper. I've followed this series since Photoshop 5 Artistry and it continues to be an extremely valuable reference and tutorial for me. There's a lot of material here and it can be intimidating but I guarantee that you'll be an accomplished Photoshop user if you follow the advice and techniques from this book.
I would also recommend as a complementary book Scott Kelby's 'The Photoshop Book for Digital Photographers'.
Perfect For Digital Photographers.......2003-04-19
This book is amazing. It is written for and by a photographer. I've had the book for only a few days and I am already doing things that seemed complex in just a matter of moments. I can't express how happy I am with this book purchase. It was the perfect book for me and anyone else that wants to work with digital photographs.

The worst book on the subject ever!.......2007-07-31
This book is without a doubt one of the LEAST helpful books I have seen. It goes back immediately! Not only is the photography uninspiring, but the information contained is all but worthless ("there's a long tradition in the use of food.." "this playfully quizzical look suggests a good working relationship between model and photographer..." ) Far from being instructive, it reads more like stream-of-consciousness photo-babble from cover to cover. RUN - don't walk - away from this one!
Beautifully presented.......2007-02-03
I found that the book was very well presented. Only a small portion of it deals with taking pictures. The rest deals a lot with how to deal with all the other aspects of nude photography. I found this as an invaluable resource not just for nude photography but for all photography involving models. I especially enjoyed the sort of conversational approach he takes in his writing style.
Overall I highly recommend this book, the only downside were the frightened looks of people who saw me watching it.
Mastering Digital Nude Photography.......2006-08-01
If you are seriously interested in taking photographs of beautiful naked models, then this is the kind of book you won't be able to put down. It's rammed full of insightful little tips and tricks and amusing anecdotes. Explaining everything in a coherent and concise manner, from how to approach potential models, right through to tweaking and correcting the final print, without ever becoming patronizing or overly techie.
An exceptionally good read, a very useful reference book and a fine collection of pictures too. I'm sure I'll be returning to this fantastic book, time and time again.
A Excellent Read.......2006-07-31
I have all 3 of Rod's books. The first 2 were all about the information and were rather impersonal in his approach in showing you. This book rather has a very personal touch to it. Its like he is sitting with you explaining everything one on one. It is chuck full of information and a lifetime of experience. All you have to do is read and learn from it.

Poor.......2006-06-23
I thought that the book will examine the techniques in deep detail, hence the "Mastering" in the title, but I was wrong.
The book is poor edited and has very vague information. Maybe it should take out the "Mastering" from the title and put a "Amateur".

Book Description
"A must-read for those who want to enhance their digital photography experience."
—George Schaub, Editorial Director, Shutterbug and eDigitalPhoto magazines
With a three or more megapixel digital camera or a good scanner, affordable image-editing software, and a photo-realistic printer, you have all the tools you need to create absolutely stunning images. But understanding all your options and getting the best possible results can be daunting. What features should you look for in a digital camera? What accessories do you need? How do you capture the best possible images with your digital equipment--and make corrections when you don't? What are the advantages of RAW capture? How can you get consistently great prints?
Peter K. Burian, coauthor of the best-selling National Geographic Photography Field Guide, has taken the digital plunge and lived to write about it. The result is a practical, accessible guide that demystifies the world of digital photography and imaging--a must-read whether you're a photography enthusiast making the leap to digital, a gadget lover looking for the latest technology, a novice photographer, or anybody who regularly works with images.
Inside you'll find:
- A buyer's guide to the essential equipment and software: learn the pros and cons of compact digicams versus digital SLR cameras; choose a suitable scanner; find the right imaging program for your needs; select the perfect photo printer
- Focusing, composition, and lighting tips for making snapshots that you'll be proud of
- Pro tips and techniques for using all your camera's advanced features
- Techniques for getting scans of exceptional quality, whether you're scanning prints, slides, or negatives
- Recommendations on upgrading your computer and peripherals for digital imaging
- Professional methods for fine-tuning your images in the digital darkroom
- Techniques for creating color or black-and-white prints of exhibition quality
- Tips on optimizing your images for use in e-mail, online albums, and web pages
Customer Reviews:
Very nice book by a very nice guy.......2006-11-21
I corresponded with Peter Burian briefly, six or seven years ago, getting advice on photographing my daughter ice skating. He was very nice, and very helpful. That same attitude comes through in this very attractive book. He covers all the important areas: cameras, scanners, software, and printers. This book will give you a solid and accurate understanding of all these areas. It's not going to give you up-to-the-minute details on Nikon and Canons' latest models, or try to convince you about which brand is the best. But if you haven't already made up your mind about one or the other, this book will give you the background to make sensible choices. This book is ideal for someone making their first move to digital, or moving up from snapshooting to something more capable.
A basic guide.......2005-05-16
I must admit that the book title had me fooled. The cover looked stunning and I believed that this would be a book that would, indeed, help one to engage deeply in digital photography.
However, the book turned out to be little more than a basic primer on getting started in digital photgraphy. In fact, it didn't go into sufficient detail on anything and, despite the excellent paper stock and beautiful color photographs, was an extremely disappointing buy.
Good overview, but becoming outdated.......2005-03-24
This book is best suited for people with little understanding of photography who are looking to get started with a digital camera; the first two thirds of the book are largely meant for this audience. However, there is quite a bit in the last third of the book for readers who are moving from film to digital or learning how to use digital editing software. For this more advanced audience, there is even some useful advice on picking a digital camera in the first sections.
Although the core concepts covered in the book should carry forward for sometime, much of the book is becoming outdated (for example there is no discussion of the new Adobe digital negative format as an alternative to compressed TIFF for archiving images, and camera specs are also behind the times). An updated version would be welcome for the intended audiences, and I would most likely rate that book 4 to 5 stars.
Because this book is a broad introductory text, and does not go in-depth into any topic, use of the word "Mastering" in the title, not to mention trademarking this one word, is inappropriate.
misleading title.......2004-11-20
this book is very very basic, most of what is covered ( software current cameras etc.)will be out of date soon. do not expect to learn anything regarding taking better pictures ( shutter speed , mastering the light meter , etc. ). if you have absolutly no idea of how - what or why regarding digital cameras then this book is for you , but if you have any knowledge then pass up on this book
Covered what you want to know about digital photography. .......2004-08-27
I carefully read through the book and found it is a very informative tool that gives the readers a lot of tips and advices.
For readers who like to buy or upgrade digital equipment, there are chapters that listed major considerations and technology differences of equipment categories. For readers who already own digital equipment, the book shows you how to optimize your equipment to get the best result. Readers who like to improve photography would found advices of taking better pictures, and technique of digital darkroom.
The book explained complicate but important concepts in simple language, with deep enough detail. I found the book easy to read and very helpful. I had a lot of "I see" and "Now I know why/how" while I read through the book.
If you are new to photography or moving from film to digital, this is a must-read book for you.

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Workflow: The Digital Photographer's Guide (Tim Grey Guides)
ASIN: 059610099X |
Book Description
This beautifully illustrated and eminently practical book is the first to offer a complete tour of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 1.1, the integrated digital photography workflow application that allows serious photographers to import, select, develop and showcase large volumes of digital images. Augmented by photos and case studies from a demanding road test in Iceland, award-winning photographer Mikkel Aaland explains how Lightroom 1.1 can improve the way you work.
After watching -- and often helping -- Adobe create Lightroom entirely from the ground up, Aaland (author of
Photoshop CS2 RAW) was ready to see how well it would do in the field. He organized a group of 12 top-notch photographers for a trek to "Nature's Light Room", the pristine Icelandic landscape where each summer day is bathed in 22 hours of horizontal light -- and where the only studio was Lightroom on a laptop. In
Photoshop Lightroom Adventure, Aaland uses hands-on knowledge from the trip to demonstrate how Lightroom 1.1 can help you create the best possible image under any conditions.
This unique tutorial walks you step-by-step through Lightroom's:
- Library module for uploading, sorting, tagging, ranking and adding keywords to your images
- Develop module with Adobe Camera RAW for complete non-destructive color and tonal adjustments
- Slideshow module, where you select and size images, and export the show to HTML, Flash, or PDF formats
- Print module, which includes several templates for printing contact sheets or full images
- Web module, where you can create Flash or HTML web galleries
With many gorgeous examples shot in the soft natural light of Iceland, this book lets you see the results for yourself. Mikkel Aaland's trademark ability to teach complicated topics on digital imaging with straightforward, easy-to-follow text makes this book a valuable learning tool for anyone serious about digital photography. This is not an update of previous Lightroom versions, but the first book written specifically with Lightroom 1.1 in mind.
Customer Reviews:
Great Inspiration for any artist.......2007-09-21
Great book, not only from a reading perspective, but from an art
perspective. The book is beautiful, inspiring, and informative. I
really enjoyed the read, and the pictures are fabulous. Initially,
when I requested a review copy, I thought it was for Photoshop CS3, I
was unaware that Adobe made software called Lightroom. I have a Mac
with Apeture, which is similar to Lightroom, but I downloaded
Lightroom and tried it out as I read through the book. I love the way
the book tells a story as well as teaches you about the software.
Mikkel does a great job teaching about the software, I learned a
great deal about the software and found that I really like it. The
imagery in the book is breathtaking and, Mikkel really helped me
develop my photography eye further to make my images much more
appealing. I thought the book not only teaches you how to use the
software, but also how to critique photos.
Lightroom Adventure.......2007-09-17
Terrific book. It explains everything you would want to know about Lightroom. I'm particularly pleased that Mikel Aaland delayed the book to include the 1.1 upgrade to Lightroom. The book is well laid out, with lots of photos and illustrations. The format is easy to read and specific info is easy to find, if, like me, you want to read up on a particular topic rather than read the book from front to back.
Take your workflow to a new level.......2007-09-03
I highly recommend this book if you are serious about using Lightroom to take your work flow to a new level. I have read multiple online tutorials and watched multiple video Podcast on Lightroom but this book will help "fill" in the gaps with the online tutorials. This was the first book I found that addressed v 1.1. All other versions deal with 1.0 and if you are a user of v 1.1 you know there are differences within the versions.
It does not have the humor built in as Scott Kelby's books but I found this book to answer many questions I had concerning Lightroom. I have been using lightroom on a nearly daily basis since early 07.
save your money.......2007-08-29
purchased this on the recommendation of Reichman at Luminous Landscape--the photographer was part of the Iceland team that is central to the book. Book is superficial at best--not worth the money even if there are numerous beautiful images throughout. The author simply glosses over every bit of the application-a very shallow intro to a very powerful product!! Better to invest in any (better yet all!) of the vastly superior books by Tim Grey, Scott Kelby, or Martin Evening--not only do these other writers provide a more thorough intro but they also share wonderful insights as to how the appplication can be used. find one of these other books before spending a penny on this one!
Great photographs of Iceland, Not a Great Book on Lightroom.......2007-08-23
A lot of big egos with a number of the contributors pushing the book and themselves and their
own sites and workshops (see Luminous-Landscape). If the actual photographs, even at low resolution, were part
of the exercises, this book, which is too much about alpha and beta testing the product on a junket for Adobe, would make sense.

Customer Reviews:
What a disappointment!.......2007-09-11
This book actually made me angry. I feel the title is misleading to the point of fraud. Not only will you not master slide scanning (or any scanning) with this book, you won't even get to first base. The author natters on and on about everything under the sun remotely connected to scanning but gives next to no information on how to actually scan! Some people are saying that it might be good for beginners, but I really disagree. It's almost completely lacking basic, basic information anybody, especially beginners, would need to get good results. I am in complete agreement with the critical reviews by Mark Zelyony, Bernd Schneitler, and Mick36522. Conversely, I am amazed at some of the laudatory reviews. Whatever you guys are smoking, I want some too!
The Book was great!.......2007-04-07
I thought the book went through step by step which is ferry help full I real recommend this to Slide person or somebody an pictures the book is ferry help full the best book on the shelf!!!!!!!!!!
Mastering Digital Scanning with Slides, Film & Transparencies.......2007-02-20
Excellent text and tons of infromation, too much for the casual user. For someone serious about scanning from film media it's excellent. Someone wanting to scan objects or photos should find another source.
Mastering scanner stuff buying.......2006-10-15
This book should have been called "What can you buy if you are thinking about playing with scanner", and it is good at that. It does not tell you much about scanning, it is more about buying equipment, and possibly software related to scanning. Just think about it: There is a chapter "Where to buy", and a chapter "Buying on ebay". There is no chapter "Do this if you miss shadow detail", though. This book is aimed at a high school student who is doing his/her first steps with a film camera and wants to get those pictures into the computer (is there such a person these days?) The book even mentions cross processing. No, it does not say what should you do if you need to scan a cross-processed film. It just says that you can process your film in the wrong developer and it will affect the image on the film.
I was greatly impressed by the chapter on sending off your slides for scanning. Well you definetly need a book to tell you that you can do that, and it greatly improves your scanning skills
If I had a chance to look at the book at the local store I would not ever buy it. Now it goes back to Amazon.
Thorough but general and basic: not a book of tutorials about scanning film.......2006-09-12
There is plenty of good information in this book, but none of it was particularly helpful to me.
I agree with the reviewer who said that "there is nothing here for someone seeking information about making scans from difficult transparencies". I've been scanning film off and on for several years. I was expecting/hoping for much more information of that kind of when I bought the book.
Anyone interested in this subject should spend some time looking through this book in a bookstore rather than just buying it online and hoping for the best, to see if it really meets your expectations or needs.
