Book Description

Nick Kelsh's winning formula for creating the consistently top-ranking titles in his category? Simply put, Kelsh can teach anyone--with any kind of camera--to take great pictures, by showing how he takes his own great pictures.

Kelsh presents more than 40 new picture-taking scenarios--the types that fill everyone's photo albums. Whether capturing milestones such as graduations or weddings, or the unexpected occurrence, such as a beautiful sunset or a pet in a funny pose, Kelsh's readers will learn to make images they can be proud of.

Each spread addresses one photo idea, with simple techniques and tips explained using a "predictable amateur photo" compared to the same image improved by professional wisdom. A special 8-page gatefold demonstrates "how to photograph a vacation." These are the photo-ops of our daily lives and, mundane or special, they represent what everyone really wants to know: how to take a picture of a group of friends, how to photograph a private moment, and even how to take a good picture of something you want to sell on eBay.

Special attention is paid to the growing number of people working with point-and-shoot digital cameras. Kelsh has photographed the entire book with one and he includes advice on how to use it as well as image storage for the digital family album.

You've photographed Baby and Family. It's time for the rest of your life in How to Photograph Your Life.

5 out of 5 stars Have to have.......2007-07-24

This is amazing book. In simple language, it explains how to make good photos with any camera. There is no deep technical analysis (Like Ansel Adams in "The Camera", "The Negative" or John Shaw's Nature Photography Field Guide). There are no guidelines how to improve your creativity (like "Learning to See Creatively: Design, Color & Composition in Photography or Photography and the Art of Seeing" by Freeman Patterson or "A Visual Perception Workshop for Film and Digital Photography" by Bryan Peterson). This books are great but doesn't answer simple way for simple questions (like questions many my friends asked me). Book covers most common shooting situations and explains how to avoid common mistakes and make your photo looks much better and more interesting. I red a lot of books on this topic (good books), but they mostly dedicated to people who want to become professional photographer or photo artist. Even I already know all ideas presented in this book, it was helpful for me to read this.

5 out of 5 stars My new favorite author.......2007-05-14

Nick Kelsh's books have seriously inspired me to kick my photography skills up a notch without overwhelming me. I saw the titles to his books in Lasting Memories magazine and knew I wanted to read them. They are a quick read which was encouraging since I have a newborn and started with his book on how to photograph babies. I'm already putting into practice what I've learned from all of his books and I think my photos are greatly improved.

4 out of 5 stars This books offers those little tips on getting the shot........2007-03-06

This book offers some great tips on getting the perfect shot to taking pictures. Gives lots of examples of possible shots you have taken and then explains how the shot could have been better. I recognized some possible photos I have taken and went back and reshot it to find that I did like the authors recommendation better. I now am finding myself looking at everyday life events and saying how that would make a great picture. I now carry my camera around with me all the time waiting for getting that perfect shot.

5 out of 5 stars Practical advice for regular people from a seasoned Pro.......2007-02-08

This book is a quick-read that is filled with golden nuggets of advice for beginning and intermediate level photographers. It is NOT a book filled with technical jargon or gear. What it does have is clear explanations of what will make you a much better photographer.

I liked this book so much that I bought ten copies and have given them away as gifts to friends and family when they get new cameas. When I ran out of those, I bought another ten. This book should be included with the box that every new camera comes in.

5 out of 5 stars scrapbookers take notice.......2007-01-15

Snapshot photographers rejoice! Here is a book that ignores the in depth technical jargon or the "photography as fine art" posturing and highlights the fun in photography. I found this quite by accident am so glad I did. Each two page spread shows first a typical, boring, often poorly lit or composed, common snapshot and then, the results you can get with a few simple corrections. It really helps you "see" in a new way. No more Christmas tree shots that are indistinguishable from every other year's picture. No more every-one-in-the-family-in-a-straight-line-on-the-lawn. If you'd like your pictures to move from okay to wow, this book will make a difference.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful read!.......2007-05-15

I so enjoyed this book. It's meant to be read in about an hour cover to cover and it arms you with inspiring ideas to try with your baby. I really appreciated that it didn't confuse me with the technical aspects of photography but encouraged me to take my photography to the next level with 3 simple ideas. That in itself inspired me to want to know more about the technical aspect of my camera but is not a prerequisite to professional-looking results!

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful and Helpful Book.......2007-04-14

This gorgeous book will enable you to make beautiful photos of the baby in your life with the camera you already own. His clear, easy to implement instructions will challenge you to record the everyday, precious moments. You and your family and friends will be impressed with the results.

5 out of 5 stars Great book that yields instant results.......2007-03-28

The results are really instantaneous. Even after three years of photography classes in college I always forget some of the basic concepts that this book illustrates, namely, getting closer to your subject, not centering everything, using natural light effectively and turning off the flash. When reading through my college photography books I have found that I get so overwhelmed by the terminology and understanding advanced techniques that I forget how to take a good photograph. I end up creating a box full of amateur "snapshots" that are meaningless, full of unimportant backgrounds, poorly composed and poorly lit.

What I like about this book:
-the author does not use photography terminology (no f-stop or shutter speed stuff)
-the book is written simply, to be read by sleep deprived parents who need to dash to the book for a quick reference before they rush back to photograph their baby.
-the reader does not need an expensive camera, a simple point-and-shoot will work
-the concepts in this book can be applied to all types of photography, not just photographing infants.
-the author includes a section in the back for more advanced techniques.
-there are CLEAR examples of amateur vs. professional photos, which takes the mystery out of the professional photographers ability to take great photos.
-there is a section in the book dedicated to displaying your photographic art (I plan on trying all of the projects mentioned).
-there is a section that includes great photos taken by amateur photographers using the concepts presented in this book.

What I need more of:
- This book was printed in 1999 when digital cameras were not common in the general public, so what I am about to request is for a future edition. The only thing I would like is a comparison of film vs. digital photography. How do mega-pixels compare with film size, what is the equivalent of film speed in a digital camera and have any new photography tricks developed with digital cameras? However, these are things that anyone can quickly look up on web, like here: http://www.dlcphotography.net/Digital%20vs%20Film.htm

The book has been absolutely wonderful to read and has boosted my confidence in photography. Despite its age this book is great for anyone with a digital or film camera just for the basic concepts on producing great images.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect primer.......2006-12-29

Anyone who has kids (I have four under who are 6 and younger) knows that parents don't have a lot of time to spend reading wordy explanations on how to do things. For that reason, I loved this book when it was given to me and my wife as a gift when our first was born.

In about 30 mins or less I could see what I was doing/not doing right in order to "dial in" the right shots. My father, who was a professional writer and photographer, has since regularly given me compliments on my photography of the children.

The only possible drawback to this book is it has probably helped lead to my taking more pictures than I can easily manage. But at least there won't be a shortage of memories--and ones that look pretty good to boot!

4 out of 5 stars An excellent overview.......2006-08-27

Three basic rules:
1) Don't use the flash
2) Get as close as you can
3) Take as many pictures as you can

Kelsh spins these simple guidelines into an excellent book that will help any new parent take excellent pictures of their baby. There's almost no technical jargon (which, I'm sure, will please most of its audience), and lots of full-page pictures of babies, showing exactly what you can achieve.

If you have a camera and a baby, this is the one book that will have you taking infinitely better photos in just a couple of hours.

5 out of 5 stars Maureen Taylor.......2006-03-19

Does an excellent job of organizing and establishing time lines for photos. Very glad to find a copy.

2 out of 5 stars Information Vague and Contradictory.......2004-05-02

Taylor may give readers a good place to start in their efforts to preserve family photographs, but offers information that is both contradictory and vague.

She gives a basic explanation of the "enemies" your photographs are facing, even breaking down information on particular types of photographs, tintypes, Polaroids, etc. But does not bother defining some basic terms in the glossary such as lignin. Nor are many of her suggestions for which supplies are appropriate specific enough. Eg., what kind of brush should I use to clean photos? I know that Nylon brushes are probably not soft enough for treasured photos. Even worse she says polyethylene is a bad material to store your photos in, but a few pages later suggests using polyethylene freezer bags for freezer storage of items.

Taylor includes lengthy lists of resources for, and more information on preservation. But some of the web addresses she lists no longer exist.

While she has some good suggestions for long-term storage of photo collections, I would not recommend this book to anyone trying to learn about photographic preservation.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for do-it-yourself photo preservation.......2002-07-23

For me, studying old photos is one of the more fascinating aspects of family research, even when I'm not related to any of the people whose faces appear. The military uniforms, hats, parlor furniture, automobiles, urban scenes, and especially the faces and their expressions, are like a kind of time travel, allowing you to peer back into someone's past. Taylor's previous book, _Uncovering Your Ancestry Through Family Photographs,_ investigated that process. But how to protect the photos you already have tucked away in albums have so future family members will get the same pleasure (and information) from them? And how to rehabilitate those you discover to whom the years and the elements have not been kind? This time, the author outlines the steps you can take to see that your photographs have the best chance of survival and describes the methods conservators and restoration experts follow when the task becomes too much for you. She also guides you through the process of creating a meaningful scrapbook of archival quality, discusses the use of computer enhancement and electronic archives, and points out the legal aspects of posting photographs on a web site. Most of the chapters end with checklists and answers to frequently-asked questions, and there are many sidebars and brief marginal comments regarding further reading and useful Internet resources on the subject. Keeping in mind that the technical aspects of photographic restoration and preservation continue to evolve rapidly, this is an excellent beginner's guide and reference handbook.

5 out of 5 stars The lyrics of the song are wrong........2001-07-08

Mama won't take your Kodachrome away, it is time and the elements which are attacking your treasured family photographs. Your Polaroid snapshots are fading as you read this. Those "magnetic" photo albums with the adhesive pages are gassing your family pictures to crumbs. Your digital images may not be viewable by your great grandchildren. But don't give up hope - take action. Maureen Taylor's "Preserving Your Family Photographs" tells you how to take charge and protect your family's photographic history. "Preserving Your Family Photographs" shows you how taking some simple steps now will slow down the aging process of your photographs. And its doesn't require a chemistry set. The book further discusses how and when to choose a professional conservator, concerns about digital photography, how to organize your collection, and even how to safely place your treasures in a scrapbook. This book takes up where "Uncovering Your Ancestry Through Family Photographs" leaves off. After you've identified your family photographs, "Preserving Your Family Photographs" tells you how to keep them for generations to come.

Book Description

Nick Kelsh, king of the kid photographers, tops the success of How to Photograph Your Baby with a brand new book full of tips and techniques that will help anyone take better pictures of bigger people—children, siblings, parents, and grandparents. Produced in the same accessible, easy-to-follow style as its predecessor, How to Photograph Your Family contains nine fold-out lessons. Each one offers sensible instructions on how to take pictures like a pro. Quick tips, do's and don'ts, and photo examples illustrate the application of the techniques. Follow Kelsh's friendly advice, and you'll create the family album of your dreams. Topics include shooting formals and candids; posing the family for a group portrait; capturing action, special events, and individual achievements; and photographing a range of ages. Best of all, Kelsh gives great suggestions for when to take pictures, stressing the importance of those everyday moments that may magically transform into special memories. Think of your daughter dressing her favorite doll or your son's first day on the job; Mom tending her beloved flower beds or Dad tooling away with his fishing tackle. Years from now, these are the images that will prompt sentimental smiles and thoughtful pauses.

5 out of 5 stars New favorite Author.......2007-05-14

As I've said in other reviews, I've been inspired to take my photography to a new level by Nick Kelsh. These are things I wish I'd known all along but have finally given me something to go on with how to pose my family and when not to pose them. A quick, enjoyable read with ideas to put into practice immediately with great results.

5 out of 5 stars Equipment is not so important....recognizing the moment is........2004-11-07

This is the second Nick Kelsh book I have read -- the first being: "How to Photograph your Life" which I also gave a 5 star rating.

This book is bound in the same fun spiral bound hardcover.

Nick Kelsh devotes only a page to technique in order to achieve beautiful pictures. I suggests 3 basic rules:

1. get in close to your subject
2. shoot lots of frames
3. turn off the flash

His example photos are stunning. And to be honest in order to achieve similar results simply following the 3 basic rules is clearly not enough. Knowledge in choosing the appropriate film type and lens as well as carefully setting the suitable aperature is a clearly an important part in making his many of his pictures so breathtaking. Nick Kelsh does not cover the specific nitty gritty of technique since it is well documented in numerous photography books so readily available.

He instead focuses on training yourself to recognize photographic moments when with friends and families that are often overlooked by the amateur or layperson photographer

There is absolutely NO discussions about equipment -- so for all you hardwaare junkies your outta luck here. Instead he approaches the teaching of photography through inspiration, sentimentality, nostalgia and story telling.

There are some overlaps in material between his other book (How to photograph your Life).

4 out of 5 stars What to photograph.......2004-04-05

I really like this book. After I bought it, I became a first-time father (of twin girls). I take lots of pictures with a good digital camera. This book's lessons are very useful.

What I value about this book is its practical, insightful suggestions (and examples) for what kinds of activities one ought to be shooting (e.g., shoot candids, not just posed shots), and how photos ought to be composed (e.g., shoot tight-in on the subject, not overly wide shots). The book has been very helpful for me.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful, easy skill-level required to read (and short?).......2003-04-27

I've taken pictures as an amature for over 30 years, but my people-pictures have never been successful--all the family photographs on our shelves were taken by others. In the first chapter, the author explained what I was doing wrong in simple, non-technical terms. Sounded good, so I took my digital camera, sought out my youngest child and shot several pictures. My wife and son were so delighted with the result they decided have an 8-1/2 x 11 print of one shot framed on his wall!

The skill-level required to use the book is probably "you can read" The ONLY technical term the author uses in the book is in the sentence in the introduction in which he says he won't use any.

The book is relatively short: I probably took about two hours total to read it, and I'm a fairly slow reader. There are, however, a large number of photos brilliantly illustrating the author's ideas, and the tips are so good that the book was well-worth the price. After a few months I will probably have reached the limits of the data in the book and will want to read something more in-depth, but I never would have gotten there without this great jump-start.

Not one of the most profound books I've ever read, but for darn sure one of the most effective.

4 out of 5 stars Some great ideas - but...........2003-03-06

This book has some wonderful ideas. However, it is pricey for the amount of information you receive. More detail would have been very useful. I bought 2 of his books - families and babies. One would have done.

In one example, if a reader cannot afford to buy acid-free slipcovers or boxes, the author describes how to make a cheaper, yet durable version.

Not only does the author accommodate the needs of a novice audience, she also discusses the techniques necessary for working with more challenging artifacts. The author gives instruction on how to protect the artifacts and explains difficult processes: for example, if during the cleaning process a piece of paper is discovered to be too fragile, then a shift in the cleaning material is recommended, such as from an art gum eraser to a cleaning pad. Another bonus of this book is the extensive list of conservation supply sources and the recommendations of the best materials to use.

How to Clean, Repair, Store and Display Your Heirloom Papers and Photographs helps readers to understand what initially makes heirlooms unclean. Several everyday habits are identified as harmful to artifacts: holding together a stack of papers with a metal paper clip, using scotch tape to repair an object, and touching memorabilia with bare hands. Once readers are aware of such problems and learn how to fix them, the readers and their heirlooms will benefit from the knowledge gained.

How to Clean, Repair, Store and Display Your Heirloom Papers and Photographs is a beneficial addition to both professional and personal heirloom collectors' resource materials.
