Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

In this exciting debut, author Keri Arthur explodes onto the supernatural scene with a sexy, sensuous tale of intrigue and suspense set in a world where legends walk and the shady paths of the underworld are far more sinister than anyone envisioned.

A rare hybrid of vampire and werewolf, Riley Jenson and her twin brother, Rhoan, work for Melbourne’s Directorate of Other Races, an organization created to police the supernatural races–and protect humans from their depredations. While Rhoan is an exalted guardian, a.k.a. assassin, Riley is merely an office worker–until her brother goes missing on one of his missions. The timing couldn’t be worse. More werewolf than vampire, Riley is vulnerable to the moon heat, the weeklong period before the full moon, when her need to mate becomes all-consuming.…

Luckily Riley has two willing partners to satisfy her every need. But she will have to control her urges if she’s going to find her brother….Easier said than done as the city pulses with frenzied desire, and Riley is confronted with a very powerful–and delectably naked–vamp who raises her temperature like never before.

In matters carnal, Riley has met her match. But in matters criminal, she must follow her instincts not only to find her brother but to stop an unholy harvest. For someone is doing some shifty cloning in an attempt to produce the ultimate warrior–by tapping into the genome of nonhumans like Rhoan. Now Riley knows just how dangerous the world is for her kind–and just how much it needs her.

1 out of 5 stars Dreadful.......2007-08-22

The story could be interesting, but the writing is very disappointing. The sex scenes are just *awful*, and the pacing is off. Save your money - this is another author trying to cash in on the sex-and-supernatural trend.

5 out of 5 stars A howlingly good read.......2007-08-20

I'm not a real fan of what I call "white" Australian writing though some authors do have merit but not many (could change my mind here!), but I have to confess I have really enjoyed Keri Arthur's series of books with Riley Jensen as the reluctant Vampire/Warewolf Hybrid who finds herself in a whole heap of trouble when her twin brother goes missing (he's a Guardian and works for an organisation that helps keep the peace between humans and other world creatures) and bodies start piling up, an amnesiac hunky Vampire appears at her apartment, and she is reluctantly dragged into the murky world of the Guardians in order to find her brother and work out why someone is trying to kill her new Vampire friend.

Riley is a likable protagonist with surprising human failings (despite being a non-human) such as compassion and kindness, hence the reason she refuses to become a Guardian and would rather work for them as an Administrator but her boss Jack knows she is perfectly capable of being as ruthless as her brother, something she has been avoiding since coming to the big city to live.

All in all a good fun and easy read which I can highly recommend.

4 out of 5 stars Book #1 in this series.......2007-08-13

I read this book shortly after it was released, but failed to post a review at Amazon. Since I recently got dogged about this failure I'm digging out my trusty index box where I keep my personal reviews of all the books I have read--ranked and alphabetized by author.

I liked this book. It does not end, but continues on... Riley and her brother are 1/2 werewolf and 1/2 vampire.

Riley searches for her brother with help of Quinn (vampire).

This book was VERY different. Riley was...uh...promiscuous, so this book may not be for everyone! She "suffered" from the "moon heat" and had multiple...uh...helpers...to alleviate the....suffering???

Yeah, well...at the time this book was so different, it was good.

3 out of 5 stars First of a series about a half werewolf, half vampire woman.......2007-08-05

Werewolf novels and vampire novels are both hugely popular in the urban fantasy genre - and Keri Arthur, in "Full Moon Rising", has combined the two in her heroine, Riley Jensen, a hybrid of a werewolf and a vampire. Riley's Werewolf side seems mostly to the fore - she changes into a wolf, she doesn't need to drink blood, can go out in the daytime, but does have a few vampire tricks up her sleeve such as the ability to sense things in a psychic way and to resist glamour.

Riley's twin brother Rhoan works for Melbourne's Directorate of Other Races as a Guardian - this means he is sent to dispose of any of the supernatural race that commit crimes (and the disposal is usually permanent). However when Rhoan goes missing Riley begins to worry, especially as ten other Guardians have gone missing and been found dead recently. Riley tries to persuade Rhoan's boss Jack to hunt for him, but Jack wants Riley to become a Guardian and seems to be using Rhoan's disappearance as a lever to persuade her to join. Just to add to the complication, Riley discovers a naked vampire camped outside her front door - Quinn, the vampire, can't remember what happened to him but knows he wants to talk to Rhoan and he gets dragged into the plot when it becomes clear he has a significant interest in what's been happening.

What follows is the hunt for Rhoan alongside the discovery of a plot to clone humans and supernatural creatures. Riley finds herself working with the now-clothed Quinn who turns out to be a billionaire who's over a thousand years old, with Rhoan and his lover and with the mysterious Jack, boss of the Guardians. Her time is also spent with her two lovers, Talon and Misha, both werewolves.

Although there's a well structured plot in this story it is interspersed with a lot of sex. Apparently werewolves have the mating urge for the week before the full moon and it's evidently very strong - Riley has two mates, has had up to four, and this polyandry is the norm. I wondered how, in this society, the werewolves had ever been able to integrate if one week per month they were raving sex maniacs. Anyway, Riley's making do with her mates until she finds her soulmate - but what happens if she does find him but he refuses to get into a relationship with a werewolf? Riley finds her problems compound as the plot continues as she doesn't know who to trust and who to believe and people that she thought were unconnected to the disappearance of Rhoan appear no longer to be innocent.

This is an interesting new twist on the werewolf and vampire story, although I wasn't very comfortable with the weeklong mating urge thing as I felt it rather derailed the plot and the pacing at times. Still it was an interesting enough read, it was fun that the setting was Australia rather than America, and Riley was an enjoyably feisty heroine. Quinn was an interesting character too, although I felt too much was made of his financial status (and also of Talon's) - are there that many millionaires/billionaires out there and would they hang out with people such as Riley?

This book is the first of a series and it was very clear at the end that the reader is encouraged to buy the next in the series. Although the story reached some sort of a resolution there were many significant loose ends which I imagine are to be addressed, at least in part, in the next book. Although I did enjoy reading this one I don't think I found the overall premise and the writing style gripped me enough to cause me to search out the next in the series.

5 out of 5 stars Full Moon Rising.......2007-06-30

I've been meaning to read this book for the longest time, but it took me a while to get around to it because it was only recently released in Australia and it was an amazing read. Keri has managed to find a whole new spin to the paranormal genre featuring vampire/werewolf characters. The story has an undercurrent of sensuality and eroticism that is unselfconscious.

Full Moon Rising was a page-turner and I loved Riley and her world. Can't wait to dip more into this universe and thankfully Keri is such a prolific writer that there are four more Riley books waiting for me to jump into. Best of all Full Moon Rising is set in Melbourne and as a fellow Melbournian this fact made this book even closer to my heart.

Product Description

The Caldecott Medal winning book by Kevin Henkes.

Amazon.com

In this beautiful picture book, winner of the 2005 Caldecott Medal, Kevin Henkes, captures the sweet, sometimes slapstick struggle of Kitten, who sees her first full moon and thinks it's a bowl of milk in the sky.

Any child who has yearned for anything will understand how much Kitten wants that elusive bowl of milk. Readers will giggle as she tries to lick the faraway moon and gets a bug on her tongue, or leaps to catch it and falls down the stairs. In an effective refrain, the narrator repeats, "Still, there was the little bowl of milk, just waiting." The winning combination here is the simplicity and humor of the story, paired with gorgeous black-and-white illustrations with thick black lines (mirrored by the thick bold sans-serif font) and shades of grey that are as luminous as a moonlit night should be. Full-moon circles and ovals appear throughout the design: white circle full moons on the endpapers, elliptical flowers by the porch, white circles of firefly light, oval pads on Kitten's paws, and her big round eyes (especially when surprised and soaking wet). Children will love Kitten's quest and ensuing comedy of errors, but what they will love even more is that there's an actual bowl of milk waiting on the porch for Kitten. (Preschool) --Karin Snelson

Beautifully illustrated, sweet story. I love nothing better than books in the pure form Henkes has presented. My 6y.o. and 3y.o. both loved it equally. Must-have for you child's library.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book - Especially for Infants.......2007-06-21

This was the first book our twin girls were read. Though a few reviews have mentioned how "dull" it was, due to the black & white, what they don't realize is that black & white is what newborns see best. Our girls could go from fussy to quiet, instantly upon opening this book. In fact, the inside covers, with the white polka dots, was enough to mesmerize them. On top of that, the pictures with the dark backgrounds and white bowls are just what an infant's eyes are drawn to.

I highly recommend this book. You will quickly be able to memorize the story, holding the book for them to see, while telling the story with excitement, adding to the wonder and amazement. My girls are now almost 1, and they still enjoy the book (and I still have it memorized).action of the story and for the kitten, as for the polka dots!

Another recommendation for infants, especially starting around 6 months, is "I Went Walking," by Sue Williams & Julie Vivas. The pictures are colorful and bold, and if you are making some animal noises, will be one of your infant's favorites.......it also can stop our girls from crying almost instantly.

5 out of 5 stars Charming.......2007-05-26

The world is full of unpleasant surprises for the little kitten! - Didn't we all learn about the world by making all kinds of silly mistakes? "Kitten's First Full Moon" is a sweet and charming children's story with beautiful illustrations. It reminds me of my favorite books of my childhood. Very much recommended both for boys and girls. In addition to that I suggest The Cat Who Walked Across France. For older boys and girls I highly recommend the great cat series Why Some Cats are Rascals, Book 2, and for cat lovers like myself Cat Vs. Cat: Keeping Peace When You Have More Than One Cat

Actually, the story was pretty good. A fun read.

The CD version is read by the talented Debra Wiseman.

The book arrived and was practically brand new. My daughter loves it. It came in the mail very fast.

5 out of 5 stars 2nd Grader loves these books........2007-02-13

My 8 y.o. has fallen in love with these books. You typically can't fail with Disney products and these are no exception. The stories are interesting and unlike some series books for this age range, these books stand alone and are not "formula" books where only the names and places are changed, but the same event takes place. Each fairy has a talent and her talent solves the problem in her book. The illustrations are vivid and imaginative. Apparently there's a movie about Pixie Hollow that will be coming out soon and there are also toys starting to come out with the fairies.

5 out of 5 stars Mothers review!.......2007-01-12

My daughter absolutely loves these books. So much that she did a book report in class on them and had a few friends read them. Now her friends are loving them so much too that they are begging to barrow them. I highly suggest these books!

5 out of 5 stars Disney Fairies are Fabulous!.......2007-01-06

Our 9-year-old daughter fell in love with Tinkerbell during a trip to Disney world last year. She used her spending money to buy Fairy Dust and the Quest for the Egg at Magic Kingdom. By the time we returned home she was enthralled with the details of the fairies and wanted to know more! Fira and the Full Moon is just one of about five amazing stories about the individual fairies from the bigger book. She has loved eac of these smaller books, too! The details about where they come from, what they eat, and how they bathe are enchanting for little girls! They are too cute for words.

Book Description

Full Moon Feast invites us to a table brimming with locally grown foods, radical wisdom, and communal nourishment.
In Full Moon Feast, accomplished chef and passionate food activist Jessica Prentice champions locally grown, humanely raised, nutrient-rich foods and traditional cooking methods. The book follows the thirteen lunar cycles of an agrarian year, from the midwinter Hunger Moon and the springtime sweetness of the Sap Moon to the bounty of the Moon When Salmon Return to Earth in autumn. Each chapter includes recipes that display the richly satisfying flavors of foods tied to the ancient rhythm of the seasons.
Prentice decries our modern food culture: megafarms and factories, the chemically processed ghosts of real foods in our diets, and the suffering—physical, emotional, cultural, communal, and spiritual—born of a disconnect from our food sources. She laments the system that is poisoning our bodies and our communities.
But Full Moon Feast is a celebration, not a dirge. Prentice has emerged from her own early struggles with food to offer health, nourishment, and fulfillment to her readers. She recounts her relationships with local farmers alongside ancient harvest legends and methods of food preparation from indigenous cultures around the world.
Combining the radical nutrition of Sally Fallon's Nourishing Traditions, keen agri-political acumen, and a spiritual sensibility that draws from indigenous as well as Western traditions, Full Moon Feast is a call to reconnect to our food, our land, and each other.

This book is written with heart, soul and spirit. A book to use and refer to as well as delight you along the way.

5 out of 5 stars Relating to One's Food.......2006-11-27

This book is a personal re-examination of food--what we eat, and why we eat it. In this book, Prentice examines food customs and traditions, searching for their physiological and environmental rationale. Her primary observation about food traditions is that they are strictly tied to the seasons, and thus the continual year-round availability of our foodstuffs has resulted in loss of much traditional knowledge about what is good for us and what isn't. In recognition of the essential seasonality of foods, Prentice organizes this book into the thirteen moons that make up the year, from the famine moon, to the sap moon, from the egg moon to the corn moon, from the blood moon to the wolf moon.

Each chapter describes the ecology that led to the association between a particular food item and a specific time of the year. In the chapters, Prentice discusses the nutritional contributions of the featured food items, and how her relationship with that food has changed over the years. For example, she explains how she used to avoid milk and other dairy products, but now relishes them as a gift of love from Mother Earth. Each chapter also includes recipes of the season, ranging from exotic dishes of non-Western food cultures, like Cardamom and Jaggery pudding, to simple directions for lost arts, such as rendering pork, or making homemade yogurt and sauerkraut.

Prentice was once a strict vegan, who for health reasons, eventually found herself drawn to a diet which includes animal products, but not the products of industrial agriculture. There is much that vegetarians and vegans would not like in Prentice's essays, since she explains how her 10 years of vegetarianism were not healthy for her. Having had the same experience myself after being a vegetarian for 20 years, I can appreciate the wisdom in what she writes. While vegetarian diets work well for some, they are not appropriate for everybody. But at the same time, diets that include the consumption of industrially produced and processed animal products do nobody any good. We need to be willing to recognize our relation and responsibilities to the animals that we consume.

I first heard of this book when I attended a Vermont Localvore potluck at which Prentice was the invited guest chef. I was deeply offended then at her attitude, when she announced she was going to make a salad using a recipe from her book, but lamented the lack of local artichokes or olive oil. `How could such a person be associated with local cooking,' I wondered, `if she doesn't even have the sense to find out what the best local ingredients are and celebrate them, instead of parading the products of another region in front of us?' I figured that a seasonal local cookbook written by a national author would be a worthless concept. Fortunately, that's not what this book attempts--instead the book is much more about rediscovering our connection to food than about specific local recipes.

Although she has become famous for leading the concept of eating foods only from one's local region, what she urges here is really an appreciation for the products of small farms. Thus, instead of simply cheering on local food, Prentice argues in this book that our industrial agriculture system has torn us away from one of the most essential of human traits, our relationship to the food that nourishes us. Instead of following diets of avoidance, Prentice advocates recognizing the meaning that each item of food brings to our lives, and using food to re-establish our connection to the land. Indeed, the only foods that Prentice avoids are those heavily processed products of industrial agriculture: refined sugar, white flour, and pre-packaged extruded junk. Although the book contains a few recipes, it is not a cookbook, but rather a wake-up call: "Our poor diet is at least partly a physical manifestation of a spiritual decay," together with some suggestions of how we can begin the journey back to healthy eating.

5 out of 5 stars Enlightening, Inspiring, and Fascinating!.......2006-06-06

Jessica Prentice's book was a joy to read. In fact, it is so readable, I've recommended it as a book club selection to several friends -- after all, we all eat! The way Prentice talks about eating and food, it is like she is an old friend on a passionate adventure.

I have spent years of searching for a way of eating that seems "right" nutritionally (from all-American to vegetarian to vegan to macrobiotic to low-carb to Gittleman!). I have owned books on all of them, and I have lived all of them. None have made as much sense intellectually AND intuitively as what Jessica describes. Her book is organized by thirteen moons, and each moon represents a theme. This organization is one of the things that makes her book so readable - each chapter is a complete exploration of that theme, and then you're off to another theme.

Jessica's work is well-researched, well-written, fascinating, inspiring, and for me, life-changing. I took my hundred-or-so other cookbooks and diet books to the used bookstore, purchased a few others that Prentice recommended in her resources, and my kitchen supply of books is now complete at only a few books rather than the close to 100 that I owned before. I feel THAT sure of this.

This book is for everyone -- interested in nutrition or not. I guarantee you will enjoy it, you will learn things you didn't know about what you eat, and you will be inspired by Prentice's knowledge and passion. And if you are searching for a way of eating that makes sense intellectually AND intuitively (and feels GOOD physically), you will have found a path home.

5 out of 5 stars A concise and "kitchen cook friendly" guide to the full-moon celebrations through healthy dining.......2006-06-06

Full Moon Feast: Food And The Hunger For Connection by Jessica Prentice is an engaging guide to the beautifully intricate art of culinary creations in synchronization with the cycles of an agrarian calendar. Accurately following the thirteen lunar cycles in periods of their yearly contributions and celebrations, Full Moon Feast knowledgeably explores varying moons cycles with seasonally appropriate recipes ranging from Blood Moon Swedish Meatballs; Stir-fry of Pork and Vegetables with Ginger; and Beef Broth; to Egg Moon's Avocado and Hard-Cooked Eggs with a Lemony Dressing; Stracciatella (Roman Egg Drop Soup); and Spring Tonic Nettle Soup. A unique original concept in cookbooks, Full Moon Feast is very highly recommended as a concise and "kitchen cook friendly" guide to the full-moon celebrations through healthy dining.

5 out of 5 stars Food and the Human Condition.......2006-05-25

This book is a great deal more than just a cookbook. Rather it is an historical account of the human relationship with food before the great energy bonanza of the fossil fuel revolution made so many things appear easy, at least in the "developed world." But, as it becomes increasing clear that this bounty is failing, and that the economic and technological precepts upon which our civilization is based have certain fatal flaws from an ecological standpoint, we would do well to remember the wolf moon and the hunger moon that Prentice invokes so eloquently, and to contemplate why the people of old called their months so, and what that could mean to us in the future.
Reading this book brought me to tears at times, as I contemplated these subjects, and the fragile bonds we humans have with all of creation. I hope to never experience a true "hunger moon", but am afraid I may as climate change, oil depletion, and an increasing toxic load threaten our food supplies. It could all come crashing down very quickly. I am glad to have this small map of how our ancestors managed to feed themselves even without the technology we have come to rely upon.

Book Description

There was once a little raccoon who wanted to go out in the night -- to know an owl, to see if the moon is a rabbit, and to find out how dark is the dark. But his mother said, "Wait. Wait till the moon is full." So the little raccoon waited and wondered, while the moon got bigger and bigger and bigger. Until at last, on a very special evening, the moon was full.

I have been looking for a copy of this book for years. While visiting my brother recently I discovered that he had the copy that we read over and over again when we were children. It's in poor shape, a testimony to the use it received. He wouldn't part with it, so I am so pleased to find it available again. I'm sure my 2-year old grandson will enjoy this sweet and gentle story as much as I did.

In Full Moon, one of the best science photography books ever published, Michael Light presents a voyage in images to the Moon and back. Light took NASA's master negatives of photos taken by Apollo astronauts and scanned them electronically. The resulting pictures are so vivid they seem more clear than real life. Light orders the photos sequentially, selecting the most arresting images from each mission, to create a truly cinematic experience. In the first section, depicting blastoff, you can almost feel the violent shaking of the rocket as it strains to escape Earth's gravity. Then you see the quiet stillness of weightlessness, the astronauts' view down at a perfectly silent Earth, boundless oceans contrasting with bright white clouds. A spacewalk adds vertigo--the astronaut looks fragile and very alone as he floats outside his capsule far above his home planet. Then comes the waiting, as the long voyage toward the Moon continues.

As you watch the cratered surface get closer and closer, you have no sense of scale until you see the miniscule silver and gold lander dropping gently to land on the Moon. Leaving the cluttered interior of the capsule in bulky, awkward suits, the astronauts bring delicate tracings of color--gold on the lander; red, white, and blue on the spacesuits' flag patches--to this black-and-white world. Five huge gatefolds in this section give you indescribable views of the intricately scarred surface of the Moon.

You return to space for the reuniting of the lander and capsule, and a repetition of the tedious journey back home. Finally, you watch a chaotic splashdown in the riot of colors that is Earth.

A nice section in the back of the book explains each photo with a detailed caption, and an essay by author Andrew Chaikin (A Man on the Moon) adds more written context to this stunning visual experience. The book is printed on very high-quality paper, with matte black frames for the photos and a gorgeous, wordless cover. Every space fan should have a copy. --Therese Littleton

Book Description

The most thrilling of all journeys--the missions of the Apollo astronauts to the surface of the Moon and back--yielded 32,000 extraordinarily beautiful photographs, the record of a unique human achievement. Until recently, only a handful of these photographs had been released for publication; but now, for the first time, NASA has allowed a selection of the master negatives and transparencies to be scanned electronically, rendering the sharpest images of space that we have ever seen. Michael Light has woven 129 of these stunningly clear images into a single composite voyage, a narrative of breathtaking immediacy and authenticity that begins with the launch and is followed by a walk in space, an orbit of the Moon, a lunar landing and exploration, and a return to Earth with an orbit and splashdown.

Graced by five 45-inch-wide gatefolds that display the lunar landscape, from above the surface and at eye level, in unprecedented detail and clarity, Full Moon conveys on each page the excitement, disorientation, and awe that the astronauts themselves felt as they were shot into space and then as they explored an alien landscape and looked back at their home planet from hundreds of thousands of miles away.

Published on the thirtieth anniversary of Apollo 11--the first landing on the Moon--this remarkable and mesmerizing volume is, like the voyages it commemorates and re-creates, an experience both intimate and monumental.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars amazing photography.......2007-04-01

This is a beautiful book. It is a series of photos from various Apollo missions, put together in a way to illustrate a voyage from Earth to the moon & back. The photos take up whole pages, or are panorama fold-outs. The photos are crystal clear. I have seen close-ups made from these photos before, but never the originals as are in Full Moon. That's when I realized the resolution of the cameras the Apollo astronauts were using was incredible.
My only disappointment was that my copy arrived with the dustjacket all scraped up and dented, and the edges of many of the pages were mangled, so I had to return it. The book still gets 5 stars because that is no fault of the publisher, or Michael Light. I'll buy it again when I can find a good copy at a "bricks & mortar" bookstore; it's worth the extra $$.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent High Resolution Print found nowhere else.......2006-12-10

I can use "picture book" to describe Full Moon, as images contributed as the major part of this book. Don't think that this book is not worth reading, indeed, it is on the contrary, this is an extraordinary book, because of the photos.

There are a lot of astronomy books contain lots of photos, but when you read them, you would find the images are not so good at all, but not because of the photo itself, because of the low resolution. And if you are familiarize with those photos, you would immediately notice that the original photo is not so small in resolution. It is really a very bad idea for the publisher and editor to ignore the importance of image resolution.

However, when you first look into Full Moon, you will find you're getting into a different world as you are already delighted by the spectacular images of the Moon taken from Apollo Mission. Normally, owing to the technological limitation in 1960s and 1970s, all images are only mostly available as hard copy and not so high resolution. However, Project Full Moon can turn those hard copies into very high resolution images. I can even tell you that, NASA even don't have such high resolution images before.

Since these reasons, I would rank this book as my list of Top 10 Astronomy Book. If you really love astronomy, you must not miss this book, miss the extraordinary journey to the Moon

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal.......2006-04-27

If you are looking for a book with all the same press shots you've seen a thousand times then this book isn't for you. The panoramic composits are excellent and the choice of photos is very intelligent. See what Apollo was really about in this book. The quality in terms of photo reproduction and book design is impeccable.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Done........2006-02-25

A rare glympse at other-world light and shadow phenomena presented in photographs from an exciting time in our space journey. The presentation is a beautiful reminder that we were once there and need to go back to "check on things."

4 out of 5 stars A story told with pictures.......2005-09-08

If you are looking for a coffee table book with random photographs of the moon and space travel, this book is not for you. Rather, the pictures in this book tell a story - the book takes you on a trip to the moon.

Most notable, as one begins to page through the book, are the captions. There are none. Each page carries only its photograph, and does not limit the reader's focus or imagination through words. The photos are not arranged by topic, but rather in a loosely sequential order, giving one a feel of taking a trip to the moon. The effect is deep, and somewhat haunting...

A photo of the lunar lander descending gives a sense of scale to a moon that, as we see it from here, always seems very small. An astronaut's family picture, photographed on the ashen landscape, is silent but moving. Other shots and composites are equally impactful.

There are captions for each photo at the end of the book, as well as some additional notes and explanations, but in this book, the pictures tell the whole story. This photo book is one that deserves to be "read" from cover to cover. Start it when you have time to enjoy it - you won't be able to put it down.

5 out of 5 stars Veronica Wedge Snaps Up Her Millionaire!.......2005-01-01

Full Moon is one of the better Blandings Castle episodes and is graced by a delightful set of illustrations by Paul Galdone that increase the fun.

When there's a young American millionaire in the woods, the British nobility are apt to trot out their finest-looking, young unmarried women. In the latest generation, that's Veronica Wedge, daughter of Lady Hermione Wedge who is the sister to Clarence, ninth Earl of Emsworth. What Veronica offers in beauty, though, is more than lost in brainpower. So one needs a very shallow, very rich American for her. But unexpected difficulties arise because Freddie Threepwood, Clarence's not-too-bright son, is in charge of squiring Tipton Plimsoll, the American millionaire, around.

Tipton has been on a toot. He's just come into his money and seems dedicated to drinking it up. But some red spots lead him to wonder if he's overdoing it. A trip to the doctor's office warns him that seeing spectres could be next. That observation becomes the basis of a running gag as Plimsoll comes to regard another young lover, Bill Lister, as a spectre whenever Plimsoll sees Lister. Frightened by Lister, Plimsoll decides to go to Blandings to take the cure for his alcoholism . . . and falls madly for Veronica Wedge.

A new problem arises though when Plimsoll perceives that Veronica and Freddie are very friendly. Assuming the worst, Plimsoll stifles his feelings and wanders around depressed.

There's a second romance that needs help. Bill Lister finds himself stood up at the registry office where his awaited his bridge to be, Prudence Garland. Prudence has been bundled off to Blandings Castle by her mother, Dora, also one of Clarence's sisters so that Hermione can keep the young suitor at bay. Prudence becomes annoyed that Bill won't give up on painting in order to run an inn near Oxford. And even if he gives up on painting, they still need 700 pounds to fix the old place up.

Into the breach comes Galahad Threepwood who wants all the young lovers to be happy. In the process, he introduces Bill Lister into Blandings Castle on three occasions under false colors and helps overcome Plimsoll's wavering.

Along the way, there's enough good fun and goofiness to amuse anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Native American Summer School Review.......2000-08-10

We are a Title IX summer school class of soon-to-be third graders. Many of us are Potawatomi. We enjoyed reading about our ancestors although we do realize that this book is historical fiction. This is what each student had to say about Night of the Full Moon:

Reese-Fawn and Libby were friends. It's ok to be friends with white people.

Peter-I like it when Libby's father wanted to give Sanatuwa land so he could stay with them. It showed that he was generous and thankful to him for saving his daughter.

Jack-It was exciting and scary when the soldiers captured Libby with Fawn's family.

Darlene-It was a great story. I learned that the Potawatomi had to travel a long ways when they were forced from their homes. One soldier said 'Indians should be free just like he was' and he let them go.

Michelle-It was an exciting story to read. I felt sad that the Potawatomi were forced off their land.

Gabrielle-It was exciting when the girl was getting dragged from that soldier. I didn't like the soldiers and felt angry at them.

Frankie-I learned that the Potawatomi got kicked off the land. The white men brought smallpox disease and whiskey to the Indians and tricked them into signing treaties and giving away their land for a little money.

Danielle-I liked learning about what happened to the Potawatomi Indians.

Mandi-I liked the part where Sanatuwa brought Libby back to her parents.

Joseph-I just liked the book because I love reading books.

5 out of 5 stars Full Moon Stories.......2000-04-29

This book of stories is a rare treat to read. I couldn't get onto the next story fast enough. With each tale I was pulled straight into the home and at the knees of the storyteller, Grandpa Iron. I "became" one of his grandchildren, smudged by the cedar, leaning forward to hear every detail of the story about horse, moose, mole, swallow, and the nine other animals, one for each poetically descriptive Full Moon of the year such as "Moon of the Popping Trees" in December with turtle. I, like Grandpa Iron's grandchildren, relish and believe the stories! How hard it must have been for the children to wait one whole month for each new story.

I love the illustrations, both paintings and colored pencil drawings. They convey the character and movement of the animals so well. The colors are bright and entrancing; and the symbols painted on the animals are intriguing. They look so like the pictographs I have seen painted on hides in museums and reproduced from ledger books. There are stars, moon, lightning, mountains, the sun, and other ones which are yet a mystery to me.

As well as the stoies there are details of the children's and Grandpa and Grandma Iron's life on the Wind River Reservation: doing chores, packing to go to the Sundance, eating Grandma's stew and fry bread, and running barefoot in the snow. I have been to Wind River and could feel again through the book the vastness and intimacy of the land. This book is an outstanding model of how stories can be written and presented with enthusiasm for children.
