Customer Reviews:
Good book for the right audience.......2007-07-25
I liked this book alot but I would caution that it's for a more conservative Christian typr of person so if you consider yourself a little more liberal just skip this one. If you want to pursue a conservative Christian view of marriage this book couldn't be better. It does stress submission and that can be difficult for some to digest but you have to read it and make it work for you. The idea that working together and working to make your partner happy instead of making yourself happy is the basic idea...of couse its also the basic idea of Christianity so it was pretty much exactly what I expected it to be. Of course I do realize it isnt for everyone.
Shannon's admonition to "guard one's heart" .......2007-06-06
Bestselling author Shannon Ethridge has teamed up with her husband Greg in this newest installment of the Every Woman's series. In EVERY WOMAN'S MARRIAGE, the authors put in their two cents on a myriad of marital topics, all with a singular goal in mind: that of igniting (and sustaining) joy and passion in marriage. Shannon's plainspoken deliberateness allows female readers the opportunity to study their own spousal relationship with an "insider's" eye.
As the female half of the Ethridge writing duo, Shannon offers scenarios and suggestions for recognizing potential pitfalls, recurring mistakes, and short-circuited communication attempts. Then she presents biblically sound alternatives for wives to begin consistently implementing and focusing on repairing damage already done. On the heels of Shannon's comments, Greg interjects the male's take on the same topic. This alternating presentation is both smooth and effective. Women are not left wondering how men perceive identical scenarios; they are handed them on a platter.
In this five-part marriage handbook, the Ethridges discuss (and dissect) the hows and whys of marriages in which both partners' hearts grow cold, understanding the wisdom of honing a "big picture" view of lifelong relationships, reasons why a man's joy and passions die, specific ways to reignite a husband's flame, and finally, throwing fuel on that flame to keep the momentum going over the long haul of a lifetime commitment.
One reason for Shannon Ethridge's popular appeal to female readers is her willingness to admit candidly past and current struggles. She invites women to stop hiding behind facades and fears and take proper initiative to "grow" a passionate marriage. For those women interested in investing time, effort and concerted compassionate love toward developing strong marriages, she lays out the goods by reminding readers "that men aren't all that different from women when it comes to their basic needs. Men have emotional needs too, and they can feel a sense of desperation when those needs aren't being met."
Shannon also tells her female audience not to be fooled by transient emotional counterfeits to genuine intimacy. Sure, those intense feelings of excitement are great starting points, but they are also superficial and temporary. Said this way, "intimacy can best be understood by breaking the word down into syllables: in-to-me-see." Only through long-term, living-with-someone kind of history can both partners experience the depth of real intimate love that God intended.
Thus, Shannon's admonition to "guard one's heart" makes practical sense. She notes that far too many couples forfeit this stronger, richer love simply because they never learned to make the transition from the fiery emotions of early attraction to the enduring, focused and self-sacrificial love necessary to a marriage that lasts. Says the author: "Your love for your husband won't be based on butterflies or fireworks, but on familiarity, honesty, trust, safety, security, and commitment."

I enjoyed this book GREATLY! It is encouraging, easy to read and uplifting...worth every penny.
Great book - poor company.......2007-02-16
This book is awesome! It is straightforward and has very applicable truths. If you are a woman committed to your marriage, this is a great book that lets you know what men really need and how we can give it to them. I immediately began implementing what I was learning into my marriage. Very helpful and an enjoyable read. I would have given 5 stars because the book was awesome, but the company selling it, bookssellbooks I was less than pleased with. They blamed it on the weather, then told me they would send me another book to compensate, but never did so I received the book over a MONTH after I ordered it with no compensation. Also, they rarely respond to emails. So be careful if you are thinking about dealing with them.

This book consist of a collection of nudes fro 30 photographers, some are good and some are just plain amateur.
The models ranges from gorgeous to your normal next door neighbor girl and gothic types.
It would be great if the whole book have the same quality and style as the cover throughout; but sadly, that's not the case.
This book listed the websites of pretty much all the contributors and serve like the reference book for someone looking for a semi dated styles of nude photographs.

Popular books on women's sexual fantasies tend to deliver soft core thrills and tips for a more fulfilling sex life, but disappoint readers hoping for outrageous abandon. Though well-crafted and often erotically charged, In the Garden of Desire is no exception, although it does offer insight into how fantasies evolve and how our sexuality is shaped by early experiences, whether pleasurable, disapproving, or abusive. It reminds us, too, that sex is, like humor, a matter of personal taste. Elaborate scenarios that electrify some of us--from sex-play with a true-hearted, sure-handed lover to nipple clamps--leave others shrugging.
Sex therapist Wendy Maltz and journalist Suzie Boss commendably avoid reducing fantasies to typically simplistic categories, noting that this strips them of the very plot build-up and sensuality that turn many women on. The authors are sanguine about disturbing or violent desires, merely commenting that "fantasies work best for us when they feel optional." To that end, they suggest ways to rewrite unpleasantly obsessive or personally oppressive scripts without completely extinguishing their fire. --Francesca Coltrera

Customer Reviews:
Analyze Your Fantasies?.......2007-01-20
Okay, this is a nice light read for those wanting to delve into their own fantasy life. Based on fantasy workshops, the authors have been able to classify women's fantasies into six catagories, diagram them, take them apart, and examine how they influence or are influenced by our daily lives. This book also focuses on removing harmful or unwanted sexual fantasies that might be impeding growth in a relationship and discusses when and how to bring up fantasies to a partner that might not be receptive. The authors also caution against going from fantasy to reality unless you can really constrain the environment or keep the fantasy playful with easy ways to escape the situation. Overall, this book was very helpful in sparking more of my imagination, and I can see how it would help those with unwanted fantasies too. So, get ready to get aroused and to think through what's really behind the scenes of your favorite fantasy if you pick this one up.
praise from Electronic Journal of Human Sexuality.......2001-10-28
Sex therapist and author Wendy Maltz and writer Suzie Boss have combined their talents in this new book about women's sexual fantasies. Together they explore the origins of women's most private thoughts, the most common fantasy roles for women, and how sexual fantasies may function to enhance one's sex life. Wendy Maltz's capacity as one of our country's leading experts with respect to healing from past sexual abuse is also reflected in this book. Chapters on how to recognize fantasy traps and heal or even change unwanted fantasies provide individuals with important insights and tools to alter disturbing fantasies. Finally, the authors offer advice on how to share fantasies with your lover and how to create new fantasies.
I found this book remarkable as it addresses an important issue in a very matter of fact way. Once again, it becomes clear how diverse women's sexualities are. The authors provide a logical framework for different fantasy styles by separating sexual fantasies into two broad categories, 1) scripted fantasies which may contain scripted plots and identifiable characters versus 2) unscripted fantasies with a primary focus on sensations rather that character roles. These two categories are by no means exclusive. In fact, many women draw from both in order to make up their personal fantasies.
Different women have different modes for getting sexually aroused, and while some prefer visual stimulation, others may find that auditory, tactile, olfactory, kinesthetic (related to body movement) or flavor stimuli are important ingredients to trigger sexual arousal. Maltz and Boss conclude: "…Sex therapists have recognized for years that fantasy can be an effective aid in helping women with sexual performance. They have frequently recommended the use of fantasies to boost sexual response, sort of like a vibrator of mind…The beauty of fantasy is that we can tap this wellspring of creativity at any time, in any place, with no one else privy to our thoughts…"
I very much agree that sexual fantasies are private thoughts, which do not necessarily have to be shared with others. For those who choose to share their fantasies with a partner for sexual enrichment, the authors offer sound advice on how to best accomplish this and they provide various guidelines for how to enact fantasies while honoring each other's limits.
In conclusion, I can highly recommend Private Thoughts to anyone, female or male, who wants to learn more about the power of women's sexual fantasies.
Real analysis based on legitimate research.......1998-06-27
For anyone suspicious that Nancy Friday's dated My Secret Garden lacked legitimate research and analysis, this new book is a welcome resource. It gives the reader more than just summaries of women's fantasies--although obviously you cannot write this book without describing them. But this book goes on to show how to use those fantasies.

Book Description
Christian men are in the midst of a life-long process. They’re being transformed by the renewing of their minds, and through the power of the Holy Spirit, they’re crucifying the sinful nature with its passions and desires.
But the world, the flesh, and the devil go to great lengths to thwart the process. Our culture is obsessed with sex. Pornography, declining morals, pervasive visual stimulation, rampant divorce, and epidemic adultery. They all reflect ungodly passions. And inflame impure thoughts.
In this six-week study you’ll learn that God has provided everything you need to resist temptation. Through the examples of men in Scripture–those who fell into sin and those who stood firm–you’ll find hope for controlling your passions. You’ll learn how to choose the path of purity. And you’ll find assurance that through the power of the Holy Spirit and God’s Word, you can escape the corruption of this world and one day stand before God blameless and pure.

Deep thoughts & observations,,, & Practical infos.......2007-03-01
I red many books of tango, because I m so curious & wanna be good dancer.
I quite enjoyed this book.
At 1st look, it could be just "general" guide for Argentine Tango dancing, but this book could give you much deeper infomations. The writer is advanced level's "tango maniaque" dancers who have some years experiece.
It's like David tuner of "a passion for Tango". Seems they did good research and interview to prepare this book. I found much humour & deep psychological thought inside. All story they are telling is so "REAL". I apreciated so much.
The last part of this book, they have many practical infomations to participate in tango festival and trip to Buenos Aires. Specially I you live in North west coast of USA, it ll help you much.

Book Description
“A sweet read even a Wuthering Heights fan can love.” —Entertainment Weekly
Young scholar Sara Frost’s unsuccessful search for the lost love letters of Charlotte Brontë hasn’t won her any favors at her university, particularly now that the glamorous and self-promoting Princess Diana expert, Claire Vigee, has introduced her media-savvy exploits to the staid halls of academia. But it’s not until Sara’s fiancé suddenly leaves her that she begins to question her life’s vocation.
Sara’s jolt brings her to an unusual new world, one populated by a cheerfully amoral Frenchman, a pair of New York eccentrics who pretend to live in the nineteenth century, a lapsed methadone addict and screenwriter, and a Hollywood producer who mistakenly assumes that the short, sad life of Charlotte Brontë has the makings of the next “feel good” movie blockbuster.
The Brontë Project is an irreverent and comic look at love, loss, literature, and pop culture, and a guide to reconciling the mythology of romance with the reality of modern love.

Customer Reviews:
Entertaining read.......2007-09-24
I picked up Vandever's book while on vacation in Hawaii - I finished the novel I'd brought with me and came across this one in the hotel library. It looked like a good "beach read" - an entertaining love story that wouldn't require much thought - but proved to have more dimension.
The author draws parallels between the love life (and letters) of Charlotte Bronte, and that of Princess Diana, while contrasting both with the love lives of the two central, female characters: the quiet, plain-Jane Sara, and the fiery, sexual Claire. While the latter character proves to be over the top, the former undergoes a more realistic transformation as the story unfolds.
Mayra Calvani -- Curled Up With A Good Book.......2006-12-03
Young Bronte scholar Sara Frost lives with her boyfriend Paul in New York City. Though many would envy her work, Sara is not happy with her university job and wished she could do something more challenging and glamorous. This restlessness extends to other areas of her life as well, especially her love life, for Paul has suddenly decide to break up and move to Paris, leaving her totally confused and vulnerable. His reason: their relationship lacks passion. At about the same time, glamorous and gorgeous Claire Vigee comes to the university as a Princess Diana scholar, making Sara even more unsure about her current job. Claire's exuberant feminist behaviour influences Sara, to the point that she begins to chance her thoughts and expectations. Propelled by these recent events, Sara ends up writing a Bronte script for a movie and gets romantically involved with a selfish, egotistical Hollywood producer. At the same time she is after an authentic Bronte letter that could make all the difference in her career.
Is there love in the real world? Readers will ask this question as they read this book, which is filled with slightly silly, sometimes hilarious dialogue and great quotes about love and relationships from Charlotte Bronte, such as "'...as to intense passion, I am convinced that it is no desirable feeling. In the first place, it seldom or never meets with a requital, and, in the second place, if it did, the feeling would be only temporary: it would last the honeymoon, and then, perhaps give place to disgust or indifference... Certainly this would be the case on the man's part; and on the woman's--God help her if she is left to love passionately and alone.'" Each chapter opens with a quote from Bronte.
The Bronte Project is the story of self discovery of a young and sensitive young woman. The first third of the book is intriguing and the characters draw you into their world, but some time later the story fails to deliver because of the continuous silly and what seems like senseless dialogue which goes on page after page. Indeed, if the author's intention was to portray these academic university people as shallow, she greatly succeeded. Though the reader will have to wonder, Are scholars really this empty headed? The novel is reminiscent of Tama Janowitz's Slaves of New York, however, whereas Janowitz's protagonist had tragic innocence, Sara comes across pathetically naïve and not as sympathetic. Nevertheless, readers interested in Charlotte Bronte might find in this one a rewarding read.
An enjoyable read.......2006-09-04
I picked this book up in an airport while flying to a conference - and yes, I picked it up quite simply because as an academic myself I enjoy stories about academics... This one is a fun read, with the added benefit of giving me a little more knowledge about the Brontë's life, which I found really interesting. The academic side of the novel wasn't always very convincing - I've never heard of a PhD student whose project is solely founded on the unlikely event that she find an unknown letter (where was this girl's advisor? what an un-finishable dissertation) - but I loved the raucous descriptions of Diana studies, and well, in general, it's an entertaining read, perfect if you have a few flights or want to curl up and read for fun after too much reading for work.
Funny satire on the academic and Hollywood life.......2006-08-02
Sara Frost is struggling with her thesis on Charlottte Bronte, is finally engaged to Paul who she has been with for six years, and started a year of teaching. Sara and Paul attend a faculty reception for new staff. There they meet the whirlwind, self-publicizing Princess Diana scholar Claire Vigee, who advises Paul he "lives in a corner" and has not seen the world. So Paul decides immediately to leave Sara and take his French fellowship on the "impermanence of language" after all--for a whole year, maybe more.
Claire Vigee has joined the faculty of Sara's New York college, and even though Sara hates her and all she stands for, she is somehow drawn to her and her relative, Denis, who "is" a poet.
After a strange semester of teaching, a man Sara met the night of Claire's party, Byrne Emmons, a film producer, contacts her about making a film on the life of Charlotte Bronte. She starts work on a script with Nykki, an ex-addict screenwriter. The film work results in Byrne declaring his undying love for her. As Paul seems to be involved with other women, and her teaching job has ended, Sara decides to try L.A. She does get in great shape, and learns how to dress well, but finds the Hollywood attempts to stretch the life of Charlotte Bronte to fit their idea of a good romantic picture outrageous.
Sara flees, and travels a bit more before she makes some decisions about her life and her feelings about romance.
This funny satire on academic and Hollywood life is laced with excerpts from Charlotte Bronte's letters and information about her life.
Armchair Interviews says: This would make an enjoyable book club choice.
Great read!.......2006-06-15
I disagree with a previous reviewer's comment about Sara. I identified with Sara so strongly that I was driven to email the author herself (who was very gracious, but that's not relevant here). I think it was wonderful that Sara was indeed a very bright academic but also was a vulnerable romantic who hadn't yet quite found the strength to define herself. So she did what a lot of women do in their early twenties--she defined herself in relation to her relationship with a man. Commendable? No. Understandable? Absolutely. Stay with her, though. She comes into her own.
It's a wonderful book that made me laugh out loud. You have to read the bit about allowing pre-consumptives shape your attitudes about love. It's hysterical. It's honest and vulnerable and funny and sad and for me, very real. What more could you want?

The Afterlife of Property: Domestic Security and the Victorian Novel

Book Description
What if our strongest urges could be divested of their power to compel yet retain their power to fascinate us? What if our most basic appetites could be translated from the realm of bodily necessity to the sphere of artistic freedom? Jeff Nunokawa traces the variety of social pressures that inspired Oscar Wilde's lifelong effort to concoct forms of desire that thrill without menacing us, as well as the alchemies by which he sought to do so.
Assigning Wilde a place of honor in a heady company of thinkers drawn from the ranks of philosophy, sociology, economics, psychoanalysis, and contemporary queer theory--Kant, Marx, Simmel, Weber, Freud, Hannah Arendt, Albert O. Hirschman, Erving Goffman, Judith Butler, Eve Sedgwick, and, of course, Michel Foucault--this is the first book to recognize Wilde not only as a blatant symptom of a familiar understanding of modern sexuality, but also as a grand theorist of the subject in his own right. The result is a wholly original portrait of the artist as a social critic who, in the midst of his humor, labored to illuminate and amend the book of love.

great read.......2006-10-05
don't listen to the previous, ranting reviewer--this is a wonderful book on Wilde, and while, yes, no one could ever be as witty as Oscar Wilde (see previous rant from another reader), this book both manifests the desire to "sum up the world in a phrase" and demonstrates how unmanageable such a task can be.
Not Worth the Trouble.......2004-03-15
This extraordinarily dull book purports to speculate on the Wildean problem of taming the passions -- a project that, according to Nunokawa, demonstrates the thoroughly modern understanding of desire that was one of Wilde's major contributions to 20th century culture. But it is easy to see that what really requires taming is Nunokawa's own prose style, which constantly dazzles itself with coy uses of quotation marks and efforts at cleverness that come off as merely wan imitations of D.A. Miller. Notably, the only truly witty lines in the book are the quotations from Wilde. Indeed, discipline appears to be the missing concept in Nunokawa's self-impressed, accordion-like unfolding of a screen that has precious little substance after one gets past the fanfare of the author's delight at his own meditations. If Nunokawa recognized literary criticism as a discpline that requires analysis as a tool for building an argument, then perhaps the reader might finally arrive somewhere after a journey that proves, in this case, to be a mere jeu d'esprit.

Book Description
With the same warmth, wisdom, wit, and accessibility that readers have come to love and trust in her monthly column, House & Garden editor in chief Dominique Browning offers this lively, charming, and instructive story of restoring a neglected suburban garden.
When a retaining wall in Browning's New York suburban garden collapsed, she was forced into action. Paths of Desire is the enchanting, amusing, and moving account of making a garden -- and confronting the essence of suburban gardening, with its idiosyncratic ecosystem. This meant struggling with depraved skunks and raccoons, marauding teenagers, plastic jungle gyms, toppling garbage cans, uncontrollable eyesores, potholed drives, and all the grinding, honking, and buzzing of the neighborhood.
Browning's delightfully frank prose conveys the very sense of being deep in a garden, with all its organic smells and textures, and the myriad joys of deciding what to plant and watching as the vision is realized. It contains a rich store of advice and illustrative anecdotes for enthusiasts and novices alike, as Browning amusingly documents the missteps she took in the planning of her garden and the satisfactions of finally getting it right. In Paths of Desire she teaches us how to embrace our plots of land -- no matter their size, beauty, or proximity to the city -- and make them our own. But she also reminds us that the life of a garden can never be separated from the people who wander in and out of it: characters like the charming but useless children; the philosophical tree doctor and the band of Helpful Men; the neighbors -- legalistic on one side, aesthetically challenged on the other -- and, best and worst of all, the True Love.
By the end of the book, Browning has transformed her garden -- and her life -- and has created a place of enchantment, which is most of all what a garden should be.

Living with a garden in suburbia.......2007-06-23
This book had me from the start, when Dominique describes how an old retaining wall collapses in her yard, floods the area and destroys many of her shrubs and flowers. The ensuing work afterwards is this book, as she goes from grief over the collapse (which she compares to her divorce) to acceptance and then renewal (as with her boyfriend TrueLove). While she has the wall rebuilt, she reflects on incidents with her former husband and children in the house, and especially the garden, and how over the years she still holds on to all the memories, even as certain trees are diagnosed with deadly diseases.
This small garden, filled with raccoons, oppossums, birds and wayyward teens is the story of life in suburbia. Stubborn neighbors, messy neighbors, nosy neighbors and helpful neighbors are all part of the deal of living in suburbia. The trees and flowers are just flavorings. But then there are memories of the growing boys, former pets, old trees, dying trees, annoying rusty old vehicles from the neighbors, and menacing trees hanging over from the obstinate neighbors. What homeowner hasn't had to deal with any of this?
This book is a delight even for the non-gardener. It's a perfect gift for the avid gardener who's been tending to the same garden for many years.
Sorry but a little too cutesy for me...........2005-07-05
This is a true story about the author's life and landscaping a lovely homestead in Weschester Co., NY. Ms. Browning can turn a pretty phrase and she certainly did a lot with her property. I don't know...parts were just too precious: her boyfriend throughout is the True Love; yes, 230 pages of that. The contractors who did the actual work were the Helpful Men. A little on the condescending side, for my taste. On and on through many other cutesy titles and Capitalized Names...Oh Dear! Line drawings are very well done and highlight the text.
Inspiration for Suburban Transplants.......2005-04-25
As a recent transplant to suburbia and a novice gardener, I found comfort and inspiration in Browning's memoir. Her depictions of her garden-in-progress are fascinating. At times her garden seems enchanted, barely controllable, taking on a life of its own. (Especially that wisteria! I'm now warily eyeing my own twig of wisteria, which is sending out a few ominous shoots). Browning finds the extraordinary just steps away from her door. Passages about a simple pathway or a stand of trees are mesmerizing to read about. I was reminded of growing up in suburbia and finding wonder and mystery in yards that today -- or at least before reading "Paths of Desire" -- I might view as unremarkable. Browning has helped me rediscover some of that sense of wonder in the suburban landscape, and I no longer lament my retreat from the city. Her book has shown me how my own yard is a canvas filled with possibility, and yet to some degree it will always elude my control -- an idea that fascinates me even more.
Browning's prose style -- at times restrained, at other times lyrical, and often shot through with whimsy -- is as lovely as her garden.
I don't even garden.......2004-02-26
I had read a review of her book in the NYTimes and am a fan of the magazine she edits, so I bought the book. I fell in love with the story of collapse, confusion and renewal. Frankly the metaphor of the garden served as many a problem in one's own life. Wrap it all up in gorgeous prose and a compelling (yes! she makes a garden wall collapse and the ensuing drama exciting!) story and I had a book , I couldn't put down. Romantic and sometimes funny it's a good read for the gardener and non-gardener alike.
Charming.......2004-02-19
Sure, there's some great gardening advice in here, but mostly it's a charming story. The neighbors, the kids, the fix-it men, the romantic crush. I got sucked right in. You're bound to recognize your own plot of land, as well as your own suburban existence. And Dominique Browning is a gorgeous writer, with a great sense of humor. You don't need to know a thing about gardening to enjoy this terrific book.
