Book Description
DIRTY WOW WOW AND OTHER LOVE STORIES is a celebration of the lovey, binky, or blankie--known as the "transitional object" in psychoanalytic terms--that eased us through the uncertainties and loneliness of childhood. Bundles of comfort and security fashioned from fluff and fur, these treasured friends have a lifetime of stories sewn up in their tattered bodies: a trip to Paris smushed up in a suitcase, a new home behind the family liquor cabinet, an interminable wait in the lost-and-found bin. With stunning photographs that reveal the personalities within, DIRTY WOW WOW is at once humorous, wistful, and oddly comforting--like a shabby childhood favorite who's tucked away but never forgotten.
Customer Reviews:
So-so.......2007-09-01
I agree with the reviewer that said this book was just so-so - I really thought this a great book concept and was looking forward to heartwarming stories of people who remember their toys fondly, and funny pictures of wretched, worn, well-loved toys. However, the authors seem to fall short of the promised delivery on the cover - one of the "toys" was simply a photo of torn up cloth and the entry was called "Rags"...and the "story" was about how children may take to rags instead of stuffed toys. I felt a bit cheated. I would much have preferred real people and real stories about their stuff - maybe a photo of an interviewee and toy today and his/her childhood photo clutching the toy when new. I always loved those photos. But this book doesn't have such things - it seems superficial, more an artsy pretty photo book than a book where real legwork was taken to uncover the stories.
Wow, wow - what fun!.......2007-07-25
This is a darling book of photographs and loving tributes to some of the scruffiest and best loved of childhood "lovies". It's currently getting much attention as my coffee table book and is bringing both smiles and sighs of remembrance to our visitors. I wish only that my own "Lindy", "Andy Pandy", "Ted" and "Snoozer" had been honored among its pages.
Dirt Wow Wow and Other Love Stories: A Tribute to the Threadbare Companions of Childhood.......2007-07-15
I so wanted this book to be wonderful, but I found it just so-so. I'm going to return both copies, since I don't feel right giving a friend something I don't treasure. Sorry :-(
Sweet Memories.......2007-07-04
I received this book as a gift and immediately had to order it as a gift for my sister who turns 65 next week. Her threadbare companion until our family left it in a motel enroute from Chicago to Seattle, was a small down pillow, called her "My My". She was only four years old, I was nine and I can still remember her cries of anguish.
Almost anyone can relate to this charming book.
Hilarious!.......2007-07-03
The book made me laugh out loud! Both the pictures and the commentary are hilarious! A real treasure!

Book Description
Tried everything but still not feeling better?
If your depression keeps coming back or is even getting worse, then you may be suffering from bipolar II or “soft” bipolar disorder. Commonly misdiagnosed, these mood disorders are characterized by recurring bouts of depression along with anxiety, irritability, mood swings, sleep problems, or intrusive thoughts.
Why Am I Still Depressed? shows you how to identify if you have a nonmanic form of bipolar disorder and how to work with your doctor to safely and effectively treat it.
Author James R. Phelps, M.D., gives you the latest tools and knowledge so you can:
- Understand the Mood Spectrum, a powerful new tool for diagnosis
- Know all your treatment options, including mood-stabilizing medications and research-tested psychotherapies
- Examine the potential hazards of taking antidepressant medications
- Manage your condition with exercise and lifestyle changes
- Help family and friends with this condition understand their diagnosis and find treatment
Customer Reviews:
Finally a book for me and my family!.......2007-08-24
I read this book at the suggestion of my doctor, who is a genius with bipolar 2. It addressed many of my concerns, misconceptions, and questions in a very reader-friendly way. It's a relatively easy read, considering the subject matter. Dr. Phelps has written in a comprehensive way about this often misunderstood subject, and he managed to make me laugh along the way. After my husband read it, he said he had a much better understanding of the way bipolar 2 works. Don't let the word "bipolar" scare you! I was misdiagnosed for most of my life because I never had "highs." Please read this book if you are not sure you have been diagnosed correctly or if your treatment is not working for you. I hope you will find it as helpful as I have.
Worth it.......2007-07-21
This was the first book my psych recommended when we first began toying around with the idea of Bipolar II vs. Major Depressive Disorder. It is an amazing book, especially for those people who just can't seem to shake their depression. Not every person who has treatment-resistant depression is bipolar, but this book helps delve into the topic. I have over 20 books about Bipolar II, and this is in my top 5.
Important read if you've been unsuccessfully treated for depression..........2007-07-20
My doctor suggested this book as good reading to familiarize myself with the various treatments for depression. Perhaps his recommendation was off, but clearly, this book IS about bipolar disorders. While I didn't gain much for myself, it did open my eyes about someone close to me and why various treatments have failed to improve that situation.
Phelps is very good with helping the layreader understand neuro/psyche disorders that are classified as depression and/or bipolar disorder. He gets a little 'out there' as far as splitting hairs; I concluded that most of the population, according to Phelps, must have some degree of mood disorder. But, I DO strongly recommend this book for anyone who has been diagnosed with depression but failed to respond to the many good medications developed to treat common depression. Phelps also offers a very good explanation as to why some anti-depressants have caused suicidal thoughts/actions in some. Very likely, they have bipoar disorder and the type of chemical support provided by this class of drug was just wrong.
If you've struggled with "depression" and its related treatments, trust your doctor and can take the time to read this book, you might find you don't really have depression, after all. Bipolar disorder and it's cousins are more common in society than we know. There are excellent drug and cognitive therapies available to help people who haven't been able to find the light at the end of their tunnel. Possible a different diagnosis will help them.
Nothing New In Spite of Title.......2007-06-12
If you're already diagnosed bipolar 2, you're better off getting The Bipolar Workbook or a better basic bipolar book than this. So much of it is directed at people who don't even know if they have bipolar 2 or soft bipolar disorder, it was a total waste of my money because I KNOW I have bipolar 2. The section on treatments doesn't cover some of the best medications I have experienced, gives the same old "walk" exercise advice, and has many chapters based on ruling out bipolar altogether. I think the author just wanted to say he wrote something new, when this is really a long-winded rehash on what we already know if we are already diagnosed correctly. I was terribly disappointed as I thought there would be some helpful, new information on treatments just for us with bipolar 2 that is different from bipolar 1. Boring.
Fantastic.......2007-06-09
I've suffered with anxiety and depression for many years, only to discover recently (through an astute doc) that I'm BP II. I decided to buy this book to further my understanding and I felt like I was reading my lifestory! It's an excellent read.

Customer Reviews:
Mainly Classic Designs.......2003-06-17
This book will not teach you how to sew curtains but it will give you loads of ideas for your window treatment. However, it is only ideal for those looking for classical designs since no modern styles are shown.
It also lacks new creative designs, I always felt that each design is familiar to me.
Great source of ideas for elaborate window treatments.......2003-04-20
The book contains line drawings of styles for all the various elements of a window treatment as well as ideas for dealing with different kinds of windows. The book decomposes window treatments into pelmets, valences, etc., etc., etc., with pages of line drawings of styles for each element. Then, it pulls the various elements together into a total look.
I was leant this book, but I found it so helpful I bought my own. It has drawbacks. If you want something simple and/or you plan to make them yourself, this probably isn't the book for you. There are no instructions or measurements of any kind, just the drawings. But if you're working with a decorator who knows a professional, or are a decorator yourself, then this book will help your imagination run wild.
The Curtain Sketchbbok 2 by Wendy Baker.......2002-06-13
This book is really great for any windows. Mostly if you are a interior designer. It gaves you lot of good examples which curtains will good in what rooms with different types of furnitures. This book gaves you something that no one esle has. You will be the first one to have that design in your room before someone esle does
Curtain Sketchbook 2.......2000-03-28
This is a great book if you're looking for unique window treatments. I wanted something everyone else didn't have. It is not a how-to book but the illustrations are very detailed.
Excellent sourcebook for design professionals........1999-10-24
The Sketchbook has page after page of ideas for easy reference and presentation during consultations. Cuts your workload with ready- made artwork. I want her latest edition printed in 1998 or 99.

Customer Reviews:
Adorable pups, incredible design.......2007-07-26
I have a little experience in needle felting and wet felting, but I've never attempted anything 3-D like this before. I'm happy to say I just completed my first little fleece dog today, and I think the instructions are just incredible. Not only does the author include step-by-step photos and instructions, but she includes actual-size "diagrams", similar to blueprints, for each dog in the book. The only material I cannot find locally are the eyes, so I made do with ball-tipped sewing pins. I can't wait to make a little companion for my first pup! I love this book. The photography and book design is modern and appealing, also.
Too complicated!.......2007-05-13
This book has nice pictures and it is very well organized but if you don't have experience you will find it very difficult. I decided to return it since I didn't have any previous experience on felting and this book don't help begginers at all.The materials are also very hard to find too, at least in small towns....
SOOOOO Cute!!!.......2007-03-23
I was so excited when I saw this book! I love both dogs and fleece, so it seemed a natural choice for me. The dogs are so realistic and the directions are quite clear. I haven't yet made any of the dogs, but I do understand there will be a learning curve as I learn to manipulate the fleece and needles to churn out my own, cute dogs made of wool! It's a great book and I would recommend it to any other fiber artists!

Book Description
Based entirely on research from peer-reviewed journals and randomized controlled trials,
Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff is a complete program to prevent and rehabilitate rotator cuff injuries for athletes and non-athletes alike. In less than 100 pages, readers will learn precisely how the rotator cuff works, what can go wrong with it, and then are guided step-by-step through an evidence-based program that takes just minutes a week to complete. Drawing from the latest rotator cuff research,
Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff is especially useful for those who have been diagnosed with either a partial or full-thickness rotator cuff tear, experience shoulder pain, do upper body weight lifting, play a sport or have a job that involves repeated arm motions above shoulder level, have been diagnosed with "impingement syndrome," or for anyone simply wanting a healthy and properly functioning rotator cuff.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent resource on treating and preventing injuries..........2007-09-06
This is a great book that concisely explains the anatomy and physiology of the rotator cuff including the bones, muscles, biomechanics, etc. in just enough detail for the average person to understand. It also describes how to distinguish between different types of injuries, how to approach rehabilitating them and collects a lot of rotator cuff injuries in one small volume. While the book is rather expensive for its size, it packs a lot of well-explained information into a small space.
I'm an ex-physiology teaching fellow and scientist. I thought this book was great and turned something that is often difficult to explain into something anyone who can read can understand. The diagrams are good and the book contains no unnecessary detail.
I also agree with other reviewers that while Jim Johnson isn't an expert on rotator cuffs, his book is thoroughly researched and he does have a PT credential and has undoubtedly had 15 years of clinical experience in a teaching hospital environment. This suggests he has a very good nuts and bolts understanding and hands-on experience.
Johnson is "magic"!.......2007-07-09
This is the second book of Jim Johnson's that I have bought. The first one fixed my back pains with a simple exercise to strengthen the Multifidus muscles.
The exercises in this book has significantly reduced pain and increased mobility in my left shoulder, allowing me to sleep through the night and lift my arm over my shoulder.
Review of, "Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff".......2007-06-13
I ordered this book for my brother-in-law who has experienced shoulder pain and not being able to lift his arm higher than shoulder level due to a rotator cuff injury he received in the past. I recommended it to him because of the wonderful results I got using the information in this book to treat my own right shoulder pain.
Having previously read, Jim Johnson's, The Sixty-Second Motivator, and finding it very helpful, I can tell you that I certainly had the motivation to try and stick with an exercise that would relieve my painful and restricting condition. And it sounded to me like my brother-in-law was in the same boat.
I used the Sidelying External Rotation exercise on page 55 of the rotator cuff book and got great results. The first time I tried it I could only manage to raise a 20 ounce can of pineapple about half way up less than ten times. I found the detailed instruction, precautions and notes particularly helpful and feel that carefully following them was why I experienced the gradual recovery. My wife sat beside me making sure I did the exercise slowly and exactly as the book states. After about four weeks I actually worked up to fully raising the can of pineapple 20 times. Later on I increased the weight little by little and began to feel good enough to resume some of the more physically demanding activities on our small farm.
Last week I was actually able to assist with harvesting our hay and didn't suffer during or afterward from any of the shoulder pain or stiffness that I had previously experienced many times. Yes, I was careful about what I did and how I worked, but for me to even attempt to try stacking a 60 pound bale of hay was completely out of the question a few months ago. I went from shoulder pain that caused me sleepless nites and not being able to lift my right arm any higher than shoulder level, to what I consider a darned good day's work.
This book is a real bargain and indeed I consider it invaluable when I think about how it helped me. And as you can see, I heartily recommend it.
So far, so good.......2007-05-11
Just as the book promised, I had a eureka! moment the other day. I bought this book because I have been having unidentified rotator cuff problems for years (I was a baseball and now am an avid softball player). Because everyone talks about rotator cuff tears, I assumed that's what my problem was. After reading Johnson's book, I was surprised and pleased to discover that my problem was most likely simply an impingement, and that no matter what your unspecified problem it is, it is likely to improve from his exercises (he cites the studies that prove this claim). Prior to starting his exercises, it was painful to soap up in the shower, sleep or do anything where I had to reach my back. Now, after just a month of the stretches and strengthening exercises I realized all of a sudden the other day (eureka!) that I have no pain in my shoulders! My range of motion is not where it should be yet in one shoulder, but it's improving. I still have a ways to go, but I'm encouraged by my progress so far.
Johnson's book is written to help people with all severity of rotator cuff problems. Anywhere from being unable to lift an arm overhead to near full utility of the joint. He also gives you measurements by which you can judge your flexibility, which is also nice to help you figure out what "normal" is.
I suppose the question still remains: why don't you just go to a doctor, idiot? I suppose the real answer is the inconvenience of going, the cost, and primarily, just that I'm a DIYer type my nature, and like to fix things on my own when I can.
The only reason I didn't go to 5 stars was because I got the impression from the book that Johnson is really just a guy (in the field) who reviewed some studies and came up with a program. Now, that's a great way to go about things, but I would not call him an *expert* on rotator cuffs. On the plus side, that does make him very easy to understand, as opposed to some of the surgeons out there who have written on the subject.

Book Description
Protein Physics is a lively presentation of the most general problems of protein structure, folding and function from the physics and chemistry perspective, based on lectures given by the authors. It deals with fibrous, membrane and, most of all, with the best studied water-soluble globular proteins, in both their native and denatured states. The major aspects of protein physics are covered systematically, physico-chemical properties of polypeptide chains; their secondary structures; tertiary structures of proteins and their classification; conformational transitions in protein molecules and their folding; intermediates of protein folding; folding nuclei; physical backgrounds of coding the protein structures by their amino acid sequences and protein functions in relation to the protein structure. The book will be of interest to undergraduate and graduate level students and researchers of biophysics, biochemistry, biology and material science.
* Designed for a wide audience of undergraduate and graduate students, as well as being a reference for researchers in academia and industry
* Covers the most general problems of protein structure, folding, and function and introduces the key concepts and theories
* Deals with fibrous, membrane and especially water-soluble globular proteins, in both their native and denatured states
* Summarizes and presents in a systematic form the results of several decades of world wide fundamental research on protein physics, structure and folding
* Examines experimental data on protein structure in the post-genome era

The true science from the true scientists.......2007-07-05
A clearly, yet thoroughly physical point of view constitutes the framework of this book. Written by pioneers in the field of protein physics, the book amazingly guides the readers to "think" of protein and raises fundamental questions in the field of soft-condensed matter physics. A must for everyone who wants to have a correct and scientific vision of proteins.
Great book!.......2005-12-13
This is a magnificent book, remarkable for its breadth, depth, and accessibility.
Elegant discussions of background material including topics in quantum chemistry
and thermodynamics render this book a self-contained tutorial on the many-faceted problems of
protein physics. Because of its structure as a series of increasingly sophisticated lectures, it should be accessible to a wide variety of audiences with diverse backgrounds.
To top it off, the text is beautifully written, at points nearly poetic including even a Greek chorus, a pleasure to read and to study. I am reminded of a few other great lecture series in science where razor-sharp intellects explain complicated phenomena from soup to nuts with wisdom and wit.
Anyone from professional scientist to motivated novice in almost any analytic discipline should find this a valuable introduction and detailed study of protein physics.

Ptitsyn's 'Protein Physics': a book of worth........2002-11-10
A book of worth from the legendary institution, PhysTech (Moscow). Ptitsyn's 'Protein Physics' is a valuable source of information on folding thermodynamics and kinetics both to beginners and professionals in this (and related) fields. No more words. Strongly recommended!
By far the best book on this subject.......2002-10-08
Excellent book for both beginners and experts. I will recommend it to students as a source of initial knowledge not only on proteins, but also on biopolymers and biophysics in general. For instance, presentation of forces is superb. I am also positive that every expert will find new non trivial insights on great many subtle points of this difficult topic.

Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2007-05-24
I bought this book for my friend and she is glad.Just a pitty that isn't pronouncing for term.
Awesome Book But With Some Drawbacks.......2007-03-30
This book is my constant companion when I am reading something very heavy in veternary terminology. However, it does not show you how to pronounce the words! This peeves me as I am not only trying to learn the meaning of veterinary words but how to say them as well. It also doesn't tell you what part of speech the words are (e.g. noun, verb, adverb etc.) which I wish it did because it would help me learn how to use the words.
How I survived my first semester of vet school..........2006-12-30
During orientation, we were constantly told that the first semester of vet school was just like learning a whole new language - the language of medicine. This dictionary helped me translate terminology used in anatomy and physiology, in addition to other courses, which I was not familiar with. The soft-cover makes it slightly more portable than the hard-cover version, although it is still a beast of a book to be lugging back and forth from class or the library. In addition to providing excellent definitions, there are a number of useful charts and tables provided, as well as color images to supplement some of the definitions. Having only completed a single semester, I cannot vouch for it's usefulness beyond this point, however, it has already proven to be an extremely valuable resource and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for somewhere to start.
A Must for any veterinary student.......2006-03-24
This is an absolute essential for any vet student. I seriously wouldn't have got by without it!
A Must Have.......2006-02-22
I really like this dictionary except it doesn't provide pronounciations (which is why I have it 4 stars instead of 5). Apart from that, this is a must have book for veterinary or veterinary technicians.
