Customer Reviews:
Good Book.......2007-01-09
Not only informative, but also very good reading. Nice book, worth the cost.
Great Sports Photography Book.......2006-02-13
I gave this book to my husband after we bought another sports book with the same title for Christmas (Digital Sports Photography-Timacheff) for our studio. We also saw this book at the bookstore and we found it very interesting and, since my husband is shoots quite a bit of sports photogrpahy professionally, thought it would be a great addition to our photography library.
So now we have two books on sports photography, and he's read both of them basically cover-to-cover -- and I have too! (although I primarily shoot portraits and commercial, and only some sports) He thinks they are both excellent and great companion books -- with these two books, you have essentially all you need to shoot nearly any type of sport effectively and successfully.
We totallly disagree with some of the reveiwers, such as the one saying the book lacks in every possible way. This just isn't true -- if you're doing this at all seriously, this book has excellent information and obviously comes from a wealth of experience.
We also think that understanding the personal experience of photographers who have "made it" is very important -- especially as many of us go through the shift to digital. This book helped with that. We rcommend it!
Excellent photos and advice.......2005-12-31
I may never get to photograph an NFL game from the sidelines, but I learned a lot of useful techniques from this book. The pictures are great -- I should only do this well! If you're curious about how sports photographs should be taken, this guide is for you.
Must Have Book for Sports Photographers!.......2005-09-17
Excellent book detailing the "must haves" and "must knows" for the budding and experienced sports photographer. Interesting to read how this photographer made it in the sports photography field and very informative as to how to continually improve and expand your photography business. This book is full of beautiful photographs and is very inspiring. As racing photographers, my husband and I learned a lot from this book that we can apply in our specific field of photography.
Sincerely -
Nikki Snodgrass Probert

This book lacks in every way possible. .......2005-09-09
This book was highly recommended at [...] which is a respected forum and website of information for people in the sports photography business. (pee-wee to pro) I even paid for overnight shipping as I was very excited to have it. I was very disappointed when after reading it.
The book indicates it will help users learn to shoot sports or to make users already doing it even better. It will do neither.
Let me begin by saying the best chapter in the book is where the author talks about his career in professional sports photography. He works mainly with the NFL and some Division 1 universities. However, the chapter is quick and not very deep in its storyline. There are no great stories about games or being on the road. Instead it sounds like a talk at career day at a High School. I was really left wanting more.
There is a chapter on equipment but it didn't do much more than go over the basics saying you need a camera with interchangeable lenses and it will need to be digital today. He did mention that prosumer cameras like the Canon 20D or Nikon D70 were not adequate to do sports. I strongly disagree with that statement and I think you will find many people doing excellent work with cameras such as that and not just $4,000 and up cameras. He really seemed to be hung up on frame rate which would mean he is more about machine gun style shooting than more careful shooting and anticipation.
Do you really want to come home from a game with 1000 shoots to sort through?
The chapter on digital workflow spends as much time describing what people used to do with film and slides and developing and scanning. I see no value in that information. The digital information is very general and not much use. It basically said that to check with whatever agency or publication you were working for and do whatever they require.
There is a chapter written by an old NFL Photos Editor describing what they like to see in football photos. Again, it really doesn't go very deep and states the basics such as vertical shots make better magazine covers and isolated player shots are better for things like trading cards. He also talked about submitting a portfolio. He said to send your best shots and not to send out of focus shots. (Thanks for the information.)
The rest of the book focuses on individual sports. It covers some sports but not all. For example, it leaves out sports such as volleyball and golf which I think are important. The author said once you learn the feel for the other sports, you will just know what needs done for the sports they don't cover.
The chapters are all very weak and while he the book promises to tell you about shooting positions and lens selections, it is not nearly detailed enough to help anyone wanting to become a professional and is generally obvious to anyone watching sports.
For example in football, it says that the sidelines or end zone are place you can shoot from and some people like to kneel when shooting to make the player look bigger. He also says you need a long lens like 300mm or better plus maybe a second body with a 70-200mm. There also is mention of strobes on professional basketball and hockey arenas but it is too general for pros and useless for people doing kids/school leagues.
The best part of the book would be the pictures. However, the pictures are not presented with any type of technical information to help you learn about your camera and lens settings. At best there might be a quick mention if the written text glossing over the information.
I usually like to think I can find something redeeming in any (technical) book but not in this one. The information presented is available for free and is better on several photography forums on the Internet. At least in those forums, you can find other sports shooters (and other kinds too) and share information and interact including presenting your own work for critiquing.
If you would like to see excellent example of sports images, then subscribe to the sports magazines and/or buy some of the coffee table type of book full of sports photos.
This book is not worth the money.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book for Sports Photography Enthusiasts.......2007-02-19
This excellent book very clearly targets "enthusiast," part-time, and semi-pro photographers taking photos of sports. It's clearly not intended or marketed for the pro, who will know most of what's here, or for the beginner, for whom there's more information than they need. But, for the weekend warrior sports photographer, parent, or person intent on learning and practicing digital photography using sports as subject matter, it's perfect.
The best things about this book are that it is a) filled with sports info from a wide variety of sports photographers each specialized in their own area; b) it is very readable and conversational; and c) written by a photographer who knowledgeably shares his experiences and techniques and doesn't talk-down to readers.
I got a lot out of the general sections of this book, and from the sports-specific sections that interest me and relate to what I shoot (mostly bicycling). It made some photography concepts really clear in a way that I had not found in other books I've read on photography.
It was an enjoyable and informative read and continues to be a valuable reference for me.
Nothing More than Common Sense.......2007-01-31
If you're brand new to shooting sports or photography in general, then this isn't a bad book. It covers alot of the basics acrss different sports that if you'r not familar is a decent introduction. However, if you've ever been on a sideline shooting as I have for the last few years - you'll learn very little new that will make you're pictures better. I learned more in a 20 minute conversation with a real sports journalist than I did reading the book. My recommendation is to rent this one from the library or buy it used if you have to have it. My copy is now for sale on ebay.
0 Stars - I actually threw this out.......2006-12-23
20pp on what a great int'l fencing photographer he is, followed by fluff, then a rehash of some digital darkroom basics. Absolutely a disappointment; publisher's marketing group pulled one on us with this title.
(BTW, great work in the photos; sounds like a good guy)
Very Useful, Timely, and Accurate Book for Sports Shooters.......2006-08-08
I am a semi-pro photographer and found this book to be very helpful in my growing career. I shoot tennis, soccer, and football primarily, as well as some alternative indoor sports like martial arts, and the techniques presented significantly improved the results of my images.
I especially liked how the author used multiple pro sports photographers -- each specialized in the different sports -- to share their techniques and approaches, yet he maintained a consistent discussion and methodology throughout the book. It really helped that there was so much pro talent talking about how they shoot each sport -- all the other sports books I have seen have been one photographer writing about how to shoot every sport. This book was way more honest and realistic.
Great book!
Where do you get those ideas?.......2006-07-28
I'm a sports photographer and shoot a lot of soccer and baseball games. Of these two sports, I totally disagree with this book's approach. I tried to return this book to Amazon but can't.

Book Description
Color management is one of the essential elements, yet major stumbling blocks in digital photography. The vast majority of digital photographers really wish they didn't have to be concerned with color management, yet the basic process of moving images from capture to print becomes impractical without it. And the more sophisticated the photography workflow becomes, the more important it is to manage colors from capture to print.
In this book, Brad Hinkel simplifies the language of color management. It is based on classes and workshops the author has given to hundreds of students of digital photography. His process for color management is intended to provide enough information to create a simple and effective system allowing the user to get on with photography - focus on creativity instead of technology. However, the fact that this book suggests a simple approach to color management does not mean it sacrifices quality and effectiveness. Simpler is usually better - if it works.
Customer Reviews:
Great basic overview of digital color management & printing on inkjet.......2007-10-03
My color experience is from being a long time film photographer. Digital color management principals were new to me before this book. Having completed it, I feel that I understand the fundamentals and have made some excellent color prints using Photoshop CS3 on my Intel MacMini printing to my HP B9180 archival printer. These prints are as good or slightly better than any I've made using traditional chemical color printing processes. If you want to make better prints on any inkjet printer, this is a great handbook!
Facing the Color Management Challenge.......2007-05-16
What you see is seldom what you get when you make the arduous journey from digital image file to hard copy. It's a royal pain in the ASCII.
Most of us pass off the color difference between what we see on our monitor and what we get in our prints with a shrug of the shoulders. It's just one of those vagaries of computing, right?
Generally, that's a healthy attitude for the casual computer user/digital photographer. There are enough hassles in life without looking for new ones. On the other hand, if you're trying to make a living in graphic arts/photography, color management looms large in your professional life.
Some days, when I'm working on several computers, each with it's own color quirks, it gets frustrating. The book nicely bridges the color management gap with thorough explanations of color space and how to calibrate and profile your monitor.
Obviously, a good monitor is going to be an important component of the management process. Hinckel covers the related subjects as well as making some specific recommendations. He also looks beyond the monitor and discusses a good work environment.
There are specific software packages like Monaco OPTIC and Monaco EZcolor that are more powerful than the color management programs that come with printers and photo/graphic editing software. There is a good explanation of how these work.
Hinkel explorers numerous printing option, tells how to test your system, and then he moves into Advanced Printing.
This book presents a comprehensive, easy-to-understand overview of color management. Hallelujah. This book may actually inspire all of us color-management-procrastinators to jump in and get this vital area of graphic arts under control.
A must read for any serious digital photographer.......2007-03-12
For years I struggled with how to deal with a simple problem of getting what I see on screen to be the same as what I print a photo lab. Color management shouldn't be such a difficult task though it usually is unless you know some preparation and steps you need to take. Most casual photographers don't give a thought, and photo ops do a pretty decent job producing printed photos that make us happy enough that we don't think color management is an issue. But if you're taking photos that include portraits, sunsets, landscapes or any situation where precise colors matter, you began thinking about color management.
Brad Hinkel does a superb job explaining the reasoning and science behind color spaces and how it applies to digital workflow color management. From the beginning to end this relatively short and concise book takes the reader through 10 important steps of not only understanding but how to accurately reproduce your intended photos in all their vibrant color glory. From choosing a good monitor to converting your colors to the right color space for the intended output, when you read this book you will approach managing your photos with a new expert eye.
Beginners might have a bit tougher time with the learning curve of understanding color management even with this well-written easy-to-read title, but an intermediate to advanced user would find it highly educational and a fast read. This one definitely falls in my highly recommended category.
Enthusiastically recommended for any Photoshop user interested in improving the quality of their digital color photographs........2007-03-04
Written by photographer, software designer and teacher Brad Hinkel, Color Management in Digital Photography: Ten Easy Steps to True Colors in Photoshop is a methodical, full-color guide to making the most of digital color photography using Photoshop software. Numerous computer screenshots illustrate the step-by-step instructions, and the straightforward text is written to be accessible to digital photography novices as well as seasoned digital photographers who are relatively unfamiliar with what Photoshop has to offer. Steps range from the most basic "Select a Color Space" (such as RGB or Adobe RGB) to "Profile Your Monitor" to "Advanced Printing" and "Adjusting Your Color for Printing". Enthusiastically recommended for any Photoshop user interested in improving the quality of their digital color photographs.
Great understanding to the relationship of image, monitor and printer!.......2007-01-17
One of the hardest parts of digital imaging for most people to understand is the relationship between the color that they see on the screen and the color that they see on their prints.
In Color Management In Digital Photography: Ten Easy Steps To True Colors In Photoshop Brad Hinkel shows us, in easy progressions, how to understand and use available color spaces to move from digital image, to screen image, to print image.
What I like best about Color Management In Digital Photography is that Hinkel breaks down the basics into easy to understand parts. In the chapter entitled "Select a Color Space", he defines what a color space is. He then shows how it relates between the digital image; the one your camera made, the image as it appears on the screen and the image as it appears on the printer.
This book can take you to that next level, especially if every time you time you try to understand the technical jargon of color space, sRGB and profiling you find yourself confused. If you are new to printing in a digital world or you are always having problems making your screen image and your print image match, then Color Management In Digital Photography is the perfect book for you

Basic retouching techniques.......2007-02-13
Well, as a photo retoucher with some experience on a more advanced intermediate level, there was very little in this book to actaully learn something new or groundbreaking.
How it is layed out and how the examples work is already described by Michal Stukow and I have nothing more to add to that.
In my opinion it seems a bit too "gimmicy" to use for more serious retouching work and some of the operation results are far too exaggerated and obvious to pass as is.
Never the less, as a basic book for starting out with retouching it quickly introduce some of the useful techniques one can refine and take many steps further, but if you are looking for a more comprehensive volume on the subject there are far more better ones.
Learn to Be a Cosmetic Surgeon the Easy Way - .......2007-01-18
I first came across this book while browsing in a book store, and decided that I had to own it. Since much of my photography centers around people and portraits, this book really concentrates on the many things that you can do to to enhance (or, for some fun do the opposite to) these photos. The explanations are clear and the illustrations make the steps easy to follow. I definitely recommend this book.
Some nice examples for beginers.......2006-08-17
The book contains several examples of basic correction techniques. The examples are well documented, each example consists of before/after and some itermidiate photos. Apart from the photos the book consits of instruction lines like 'set the brush to ...' etc. The week point is that there is hardly any deeper explenation of what is going on.
So this is a nice book if you are learning Photoshop and want to see some baisic Photoshop tools in action. But if you are more serious Photoshop user, I recomend Katrin Eismann 'Adobe Photoshop Restoration & Retouching' which is far more interesting and complete.

I liked the easy to follow diagrams for photoshop. Lots of beautiful photos by amature photgraphers that share their secrets. My only problem is that some of the pictures came with too little explanation. But overall it's an unusual book.

A broad overview with no specifics.......2003-05-07
I bought this book based on a well written 5 star review. Being a beginner at digital photography myself I figured this was the book for me. I read the book from front to back the day it arrived. However I found very little information that I could actually apply to take better pictures.
On the plus side the book is very well structured and presented in a nice user-readable fashion. It's a full color book with plenty of photographs to illustrate his textual information. The pictures also give nice examples of 'good' and 'bad' photos. As a very rough overview of what to look for (lighting, composition, etc) when taking digital pictures I would say this book does a good job.
However, on the minus side I found this book very lacking in practical information on *how* to go about using the information he presents and taking better digital pictures. Sure, lighting is very important and will make or break your picture. But tell me how I should go about doing this.
If you are looking for a book on what do look for when taking digital pictures I think this book will work ok for you, but be very ready to experiment and make a lot of mistakes. However, if you are looking for answers, or information on actually how and/or what to do to take better pictures you'll need to read more information elsewhere.
A great all-around first book on photography with digicams.......2002-06-06
This is a terrific first book on taking photos with digital cameras. The subtitle is 'A No-Nonsense, Jargon-Free Guide for Beginners,' and that is exactly what this book is. It is very clear, easy to understand, and very well illustrated (in color) with examples to make it easy to get the author's points.
The strength of this book is that it provides an excellent introduction to the fundamentals of photography. After a short section covering hardware and software, the first main section of the book covers photography, with a 2-page spread on each major point. For example, the first one covers lighting. If you don't get lighting right, nothing else matters - and so many people waste time and film shooting in bad light, or mis-using their flash. He goes on to discuss exposure, composition, depth of field, point of view, and many other essentials. Each of these is clearly (if briefly) explained, with excellent illustrations.
The other major section of the book is an exploration of the digital side (both technically and creatively). In a similar fashion to the points on photography, the author walks through key techniques which can be used to manipulate images on a computer.
My strong bias is that people should focus on taking good photographs rather than on technology. It takes too much editing to make a bad shot acceptable, and editing will almost never give you a really great shot if you didn't get the fundamentals right. This book is written by an experienced photographer and writer, and it shows.
A few notes on what this is NOT:
- It's not a guide to buying a digital camera. But research on what to buy is better done using websites, as the offerings change too quickly.
- It's not a detailed guide to how to use any particular software. This book covers the highlights of image editing on a computer, and gives you an idea of what can be done, so you know what to try and look for on your particular software.
Digital Photography may even seem too simple the first time you pick it up, but that is deceptive. If you master what is here, you will be a very good photographer - because the author knows what he's talking about, and how to explain it simply, and has wisely focused on the key points.
If you are already an experienced film photographer and want more detail on the digital side, consider Freeman's Complete Guide to Digital Photography as an alternative to this.
Now is a good time to give this a try, and Bavister's Digital Photography is great if you want to learn about both the digital and the photography elements. It is a good choice for an adult, or a smart teen with that gift of their first camera.
