Book Description

From a noted pioneer in sports medicine comes a breakthrough regimen for stopping back pain once and for all—without surgery.

Eighty-percent of Americans suffer some form of low-back pain—usually due to a herniated disk—but long-term relief is rarely achieved.

As a physician specializing in treating athletes, Dr. Vijay Vad has spent years researching how to cure back pain using medical yoga and Pilates. Profiled in The Wall Street Journal, his program requires just fifteen minutes a day for eight weeks to restore flexibility and prevent future injuries.

Offering a proven alternative to invasive surgery, Dr. Vad's Back Rx provides the best of mind/body medicine by giving readers three step-by-step exercise series, demonstrated in 130 precise photographs, for implementing his popular program at home. Even readers with severely limited mobility will rejoice in Dr. Vad's gentle introductory workout. Progressing through his self-paced program, they will discover a new range of exercises, breathing techniques, and tips for self-massage. For those who want to go even further and use this program for more than the treatment of a single injury, an advanced workout is included that puts readers on the road to peak performance.

The perfect combination of modern medicine, Pilates innovations, and ancient yoga postures, Back Rx builds important new fundamentals for lifelong freedom from pain.

4 out of 5 stars really good and effective.......2007-10-03

author gives the basics of backpain and causes which we overlook in general. first you should beleive in the process(dont make the pain to take control over you as it is more mind+body related) and follow it sincerely. Only difference what i found is that it takes around 30-min and not 15-min for any of the series a/b/c.Back RX: A 15-Minute-a-Day Yoga- and Pilates-Based Program to End Low Back Pain

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Book.......2007-09-20

This book is an excellent back therapy book. The author has clearly experience back pain and understands the difficulty of getting moving again after an acute episode of pain.

One reviewer criticizes the book because he or she was looking for a specific type of yoga guide. This is not a yoga guide, nor is it many other things. It is a great back rehab book. This reviewer should have read the 48 point font title of the book.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent starter book.......2007-09-12

I recently suffered my first real back injury. I spent almost a week on my back completely incapacitated by pain. As soon as I was able to move, I read this book and began doing some of the exercises from it. I found that the exercises had an immediate and very positive effect, first in reducing the pain and now building both strength and flexibility. When I was able to schedule physical therapy, the therapists were happy with my progress and added only a few exercises. My recovery has been very rapid and I'm certain this book played a significant role.

I found the introductory commentary quite helpful in introducing the physiology of the back, describing various causes of pain and remedies, and mapping out the future of my spine as I age. The advice on posture when sneezing or coughing post injury ("lean back, look up!") was worth the purchase price on its own.

I don't think there is any "one-size-fits-all" answer to back pain. Workouts need to be tailored to the needs of the individual, and will change over time as injuries heal and muscles strengthen. As such the ideal program will incorporate elements from many different sources. Because this book outlines three different workout regimens -- one for during healing, one for during post-trauma recovery, and one for ongoing strengthening -- I had a lot of options to help find a workout which works well for me.

I do have a couple of criticisms of the book. The discussion of some of the exercises do not make it entirely clear what muscle group should be affected, which made it a little harder to figure out whether I was doing it right or if I was ready for a more challenging exercise. Also, the book is firmly focused on the lower back (and hips). As a software engineer, I find that I need help with my upper back and neck, and this book does little to help me with that.

I doubt this book will be a single all-encompassing answer to your back-pain prayers. However, I expect it will help most people interested in it in the first place. For me personally, it was a real god-send.

4 out of 5 stars After one week, it is definitely helping.......2007-08-31

I bought this book about a week ago and have done the exercises every day since. I notice an immediate difference after going through the routine each morning (I generally wake up with enough pain that I am hunched over as I walk from the bedroom to the coffee maker; after the routine I am able to stand up straight as well as walk and sit on a chair with little or no pain). I am also noticing an overall reduction in pain in my lower back at all times -- I can sit on the stool at my breakfast bar for longer than I could before, and just generally my back feels better and I am less hunched over than before.

Couple comments related to other reviewers' complaints:

(A) "The exercises are too basic." I am generally fit and have done a lot of yoga, so after four days of doing Series A, I decided to "graduate" myself to Series B in advance of the recommended eight weeks. So far, this is working well. Series B is only a little more challenging, but more to the point, it includes stretches and poses that I can tell (because I can feel it) are targeting the precise areas of my back that need it.

(B) "Anyone who has been to a therapist already knows everything in this book." Probably true, but I think the book is a great idea for people like me who tend to avoid the hassle of going to a doctor. Sure, I've talked to my PCP about my low back pain, at which point she tells me it's probably muscular and offers to refer me to a specialist -- total hassle, time out of my life, plus god knows how many co-pays and added HMO expenses. My low back pain is chronic and I know I should probably see a specialist (in my mid-30s, my low back hurts pretty much every day and I have thrown it out, on average, once every 12-18 months -- requiring 3-6 days immobility on bed or couch to recover -- since my early 20s). But I live in New York City, I'm busy, phys therapy is expensive and I basically would just rather avoid that. For all those reasons, this book is perfect in that it's an extremely affordable investment that shows me exactly which yoga poses will improve my back and saves me a trip to heaven knows how many doctors.

So basically, if you'd rather avoid dealing with a round of healthcare, but your back is bothering you and you don't want to just ignore it, this book is a frugal way to learn a practical yoga routine that will effectively target your lower back.

5 out of 5 stars Helped me through my back injury.......2007-07-31

I am 34 years old and have a very physical job in habitat restoration/native plant gardening. I bought this book while recovering from a lower back injury that had me waylaid for a month. The book provides a series of exercises for those who've just had a traumatic injury but also for those who wish to prevent future injury. I was in considerable pain when I first started the exercises. I immediately felt better after my first 20-minute exercise session with the book. I continued the do exercises and after a week, I was 90% better.

That was three years ago. Since then, I've continued to do the exercises whenever I feel the slightest bit of back strain. And as the book encourages, I periodically do the exercises when I'm bored or just happen to be lying on the floor. I've done the exercises so much that I don't even need the book anymore. I've memorized them all. I've lent the book out and recommended it many times.

If you have regular back pain or have suffered a lower back injury, I can't recommend this book enough.

Sam Horn's intelligent books always stand in a class of their own, with relevant and realistic ideas that can be implemented immediately. This memorable and practical book is a gold mine of inspiration and ideas, and frankly... is a ton of fun to read!

As a professional career coach, I have read hundreds of books in this genre - "What's Holding You Back?" is one of my all-time favorites! For two years, I have been giving this book to my clients as a gift, and have consistently received rave reviews and heartfelt appreciation in response. I truly believe it's an invaluable resource for helping individuals increase their confidence and clarity. I just recently pulled it off my shelf and re-read it for myself, and was once again reminded of its powerful impact.

Chapter 4, "Conversing with Comfort" is simply brilliant! The tips provided on these pages will have even the most introverted individual communicating and "networking" with ease. If you're already an avid `networker' or sales guru - this book will feel like a dear friend, reconnecting you to what you may know, yet often forget. It will no doubt inspire you to "try on" some new ways of connecting to others in a more meaningful way.

I offer my sincere kudos to Horn for this magnificent work, and offer a sincere "must read!" recommendation to potential buyers.

This book offers helpful suggestions to step into a more active, fulfilled life. I have put several of the tools to use in my daily activities and have had great success. At first, I was very skeptic that a book would benefit me. After reading the first chapters, I knew I had found a solution to my issues.

5 out of 5 stars Fun AND informative.......2005-10-10

This is a really enjoyable read and full of ideas. Sam is a great motivator and public speaker. If you know she's going to be in your area, sign up to see her! She's great at personally reframing negative ideas for you and making them into positive affirmations.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great re-do of original book.......2007-02-22

excellent advice from a renowned professional - followed the exercises for a healthy back and eliminated my back pain - would reccommend for those with annoying back pain - severe back pain requires directives from a personal doctor

1 out of 5 stars Useless book that upsets back pain sufferers.......2007-02-01

This small paperback is next to being totally useless for back pain sufferers. First of all, the author spends 1/3 of the book giving you boring technical details about how the back works. Don't get me wrong; I would have loved to know how my back works, but his writing is completely dry and confusing. The graphic illustrations are produced very poorly, reminiscent of old books you used to have to read in your high school library.

The author talks about potential treatments including alternative treatments. He pretty much tells you nothing will work, period. That's really bad news. In fact, he says that "90% of back pains disappear without *any* treatment." Ok, but at least give us some effective means of relieving the pain. Not much is discussed here, either. He basically tells you that pain relievers, muscle relaxants and acupuncture won't work. There's a section heading mentioning heat relief but interestingly heat pads are not really discussed. Very frustrating.

The last 1/3 of the book is devoted to simple back exercises. I did these for a month and my back pain did not improve. (I guess the author does say that the exercises are not for relieving or treating the pain but for "preventing" the pain in the future.) Whatever. This book is a completely waste of money.

In the end, I got a German-made homeopathic anti-inflammatory ointment that, after a few applications, stopped my back pain. A tube of the ointment costs about the same as this book but can be used many times, effectively.

5 out of 5 stars useful info for back sufferers.......2005-12-10

I bought this when my husband was diagnosed with a herniated disk. Dr. Root offers concise explanations of the anatomy of the back and spine, the different types of back injury, and the range of available treatments. Also, the exercises are easy to follow, and now I do them (they are meant for people who don't have a serious injury, but who just have stiffness and minor pain)---and he makes a point of emphasizing care in self-treating and using "alternative" treatments without being dismissive. His views reflect the most up-to-date thinking on back pain--that surgery is rarely needed and exercise can fix most disk problems (like it did with my husband), and he helps you navigate the options (along with your orhtopedist).

5 out of 5 stars Finally did the trick.......2005-04-18

I had a bulging disk problem many years ago but had recovered. Recently I had my first serious flair up, and for two weeks none of my standard exercises worked.

I got Dr. Root's book, and his exercises immediately started helping. One particular cross-legged exercise helped realign my back so that the other exercises could be more productive.

Without this book, I would have had to go back to the doctor and get his help because I was getting desperate. Now I'm on my way to recovery, and I'll be sure to keep doing Dr. Root's exercises so they'll keep my back in shape.

5 out of 5 stars Saved My Back.......2003-05-20

Almost 30 years ago, my back was on a downward spiral. I progressed from annual episodes of "throwing my back out" to almost daily pain that varied from mildly annoying to activity stopping. I consulted doctors and chiropractors. As I was not bad enough for surgery, the doctors had little to offer. One chiropractor gave me an excellent treatment that seemed to cure me for a couple of years. He retired, and I was not helped by other chiropractors.

Then I found Dr. Root's book. The latest version is "No More Aching Back", Signet(November 1991), ISBN 0-451-17091-1. I started doing his easy exercises, and my back pain went away gradually over the course of a few months. I've continued doing some of his exercises pretty consistently for almost 20 years, and I have not had a significant episode of back pain in that time.

Recently, I went to an orthopedic surgeon for a knee injury. Most of the other patients in his waiting room were being treated for back pain. Some needed weekly physical therapy and drugs to help them through the day. If I did not find Dr. Root's book, I think I would have suffered like them.

I've recommended the book to more people than Dr. Root's mother. My back feels great. Good luck.

I gave all of my kindergarten students this book on the last day of school. In September when they arrived as first graders, they were all telling me how much they loved the book over the summer. One parent e-mailed me and told me how helpful she found the book to be over the summer while they were preparing for first grade. I would recommend this book highly!

5 out of 5 stars The Night Before First Grade.......2007-08-01

Excellent! I was a little skeptical at first, but this book is wonderful. My 6 year old has read the book on her own and the illustrations were very helpful to assist her in identifying some new words on the page.

She has enjoyed the book so much that she has decided to include the book in her summer book report reading list. It is just the correct length for a child entering first grade. My daughter's school only has 1 of each grade, but it has helped her realize to give things a chance. She realizes there will be new children and she may not be seated right next to her friends but there are many other things for her to explore.

First grade can be scary. It's entering what my daughter's school calls 'the upper grades'.

Overall, the book is one that both children and parents will enjoy with it's great ending.

5 out of 5 stars Cute Story.......2006-11-03

Good story with plenty of play on words!
Kids will enjoy this, and makes for a goos converstaion starter about preparing for going back to school!

3 out of 5 stars Great book to help with anxieties.......2006-11-02

This was funny and inspiring book to read the night before school. It helped my daughter get over her anxieties about a new teacher and a new grade.

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction to the first grade world!.......2006-01-19

It's hard to write a book about first grade jitters. Many of the books out there make the first day seem just perfect, when it often isn't. What I like about The Night Before First Grade is the way in which the author recognizes the potentially frightening aspects of the first day of school and resolves them in a realistic manner.

For example, when the protagonist arrives at school, she learns that there are two sections of first grade and that her best friend will be in the other section. Bravely waving goodbye to her friend, she discovers new interests in her classroom. The lunchroom is busy and a bit scary, but she weathers it nicely.

The text is in a rhythmic prose style, patterned after "The Night Before Christmas." I was a bit skeptical at first, but it works, and young readers will appreciate the consistent beat of the narrative. Deborah Zemke's illustrations are upbeat and slightly funky - just like first grade!

Product Description

Louisville, Kentucky's recent history has no more vivid moment than the tornado which tore a path of destruction across the city and Jefferson County on April 3, 1974. This book is a 30th anniversary look back at the events of that day as seen through the images of journalists, freelance photographers and ordinary people who grabbed their cameras and recorded the destruction that occurred.

Complementing the photographs are the compelling personal accounts and recollections of people whose fate brought them into contact with the storm, and who lived to tell the tale.

5 out of 5 stars TORNADO!.......2005-04-03

The third of April, 1974, became known as "The Day Of 100 Tornados." A very chilling day for thousands, never to be forgotten. I was in the Louisville tornado, as it tore through
the city that afternoon. This just is not something one easily forgets. One tornado is terrible enough, yet there were many,
many more that night, not only in Kentucky, but throughout the
whole region. They just kept coming. I believe Mr. Butler has done a remarkable job with this book---bringing to life again that terrible day, and night, of sheer destruction. The Louisville tornado tore through our beloved Cherokee Park, destroying in one moment, thousands of beautiful trees that had been there for years. Certainly everything is recovering through the years since, yet will never ever be the same. This is a book of remembrance for those who lived through the horrors of that day and night...and a book
which clearly shows the sheer power of what a tornado can do.

    Book Description

Back In The Days documents the emerging hip-hop scene from 1980-1989 - before it became what is today's multi-million-dollar multinational industry. Back in the days, gangs would battle not with guns, but by breakdancing. Back in the days, the streets - not corporate planning - set the standards for style. Back in the days, Jamel Shabazz was on the scene, photographing everyday people hangin' in Harlem, kickin' it in Queens, and cold chillin' in Brooklyn. Street styling with an attitude not seen in fashion for another twenty years to come, Shabazz's subjects strike poses that put supermodels to shame - showing off Kangol caps and Gazelle glasses, shell-top Adidas and suede Pumas with fat laces, shearling coats and leather jackets, gold rope chains, door-knocker earrings, name belts, boom boxes, and other designer finery. For anyone who wants to know what "keepin' it real" means, Back In the Days is the book of your dreams.

However, I've only got one issue with the book - where's all the Puerto Rican and white people? Two PR's and one white guy in the whole book? Come on. This is New York we're talking about here.

I grew up in Park Slope Brooklyn in the 80's.. remember downtown BK, Cobble Hill, South Brooklyn, Red Hook - the hip hop/graffiti/breaking culture was very diverse and the scene reflected that. Just take a look at "Style Wars".

This book is a great peek at who and what the culture was, but it's far from the whole story. More like a slice.

Just when you thought you escaped Bell-Kangols, Sheepskins and the Koch administration, along comes "Back In The Days". Photograhper Jamel Shabazz's vibrant tome is fresher than two-tone British Walkers with the LEE suit to match! More like your man's childhood photo album, B.T.D. is a melting pot of style, attitude and a throw-back to the glory days of 80's Hip Hop fashion. Looking at these pages brought back fond memories of Kurtis Blow and B-boys, Jordache n' Jettas, subway graffiti and shopping on Delancey. Jamel does a great job of capturing the youth of New York in one of the most stylish and important decades in Hip Hop history. It would've been dope though to include actual info (i.e., date, location and names of subjects and/or crews) on each page, but the omissions only help to arouse curiosity. Funny enough, the irony in the era(s) being covered in this book is: no matter what the socioeconomic conditions of the times were, (i.e., drugs, poverty, crime, Reganomics etc.) kids in NY always found a way to look good! Back In The Days is a great book and an excellent reference to a period in Hip Hop history when the word "fresh" wasn't just a catchphrase, but a way of life. --James "Koe" Rodriguez

4 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE if you are an 80's child!.......2003-08-08

I got this book as soon as it came out, and it is better than I had expected. I always wished I had more photos of the outfits and growing up in the 80's and this book does justice to how we looked. Everything is nicely represented in this book although I wish more West Coast. But still, It's Fantastic and It's Nicely bound very artsy cool!

5 out of 5 stars Only in NYC.......2003-06-14

Growing up in Brownsville, Brooklyn this book depicts the look and feel of NYC during this era. Brothers was rocking the shearlings tough, punks was getting their Lee patches taken and the flygirls was rocking the bamboo earings. Before the MTV era (although we did have Video Music Box) was setting the trend for how we looked and spoke, we looked within ourselves and let the streets define whether we were fresh or corney. Jamal represented in this book for real before the word was exploited. One

    Book Description

When people knew the earth was flat and it was the center of the universe, all life revolved around that truth. Galileo's telescope changed the truth. And with that one change, all architecture, music, literature, science, politics -- everything changed, mirroring the new view of truth. This tape is James Burke's examination of the moments in history when a change in knowledge radically altered man's understanding of himself and the world around him.Few people are able to look at human history and see it not as a jumble of half-remembered names and dates, but as an intricate mosaic of neatly interlocking pieces. Fewer still can describe the patterns and explain the parts of the puzzle so that it not only makes sense, but so that it also fascinates and intrigues, excited and entertains. James Burke tells history like it's the plot of the most interesting mystery ever written.

5 out of 5 stars Title of book: "Changed the truth"??? .......2007-07-08

Just a comment about the title of this book...."changed the truth?"....Well, truth never, never, never "changes"....beliefs do, though. Galileo's telescope did not change the truth, but changed beliefs....big difference. The truth of a round earth was always true, whether people believed it or not. Galileo's telescope changed beliefs and understandings about the absolute truth of a round Earth.

Say, consider the resurrection of Jesus Christ.....we may believe it or we may not, but the truth remains the same, that it actually did happen....the truth is the truth, regardless of what we believe....as for me, I choose to believe in solid truths, like a round Earth and the resurrection of Jesus, the latter making an eternal difference.

4 out of 5 stars One Of The Better.......2006-09-25

Burke has a way of making history, science, and
the human condition fun while telling you something
that makes you think about it.

The Day The Universe Changed shows, as Burke has
become known for, connections between many aspects
of human life, the universe, and those odd, sometimes
    silly bits of everyday life.

James Burke is one of the better popularizers of science,
his prolific works (all the while being the consumate "geek"
in big glasses and almost balding) make for, not just fun,
but learning. Great stuff, and even better for kids who
will appreciate his quickness and ability to get to the point.

5 out of 5 stars The evolution of change........2006-03-29

This review is based on the first American edition, which was published as a companion to the PBS program, "The Day the Universe Changed". I am assuming that the book is identical with the original British edition.

This is another in the series of excellent popular science and technology books by James Burke. The title is a little misleading, though, in that it does not deal with a specific day, rather with the overturning of paradigms (although the term paradigm is never used in the text). The book is lavishly illustrated, in the mold of the books that are companions to PBS series. (In this regard, I do not know if the original edition is also as lavishly illustrated.)

Each chapter begins with a view of the world before "The Day the Universe Changed", for instance, a world in which the sun revolves around the earth and the sun, moon, planets and stars each reside on Celestial Spheres. The book then shows how this view was changed by the observations of Copernicus, Tycho Brahe and Kepler, then how Galileo and then Newton synthesized this data into a new view of the heavens. The same sort of approach is given to chemistry, medicine, geology, biology and other fields. The main theme of the book is that the view of the universe is not static. While Newton's view of light prevailed for over 200 years, it was eventually changed by Einstein. The book shows how the retrieval of the philosophy of the Greeks from the Arabs started these changes. It shows how many factors interact, for instance and how the development of perspective drawing and printing affected the development of science.

The last chapter of the book is the most thought provoking. It proposes that there is no objective truth, but that what we see as truth is actually a construct of the current structure of thought and that "truth is relative" to this structure. The "truth" of an earth-centered universe was framed by the prevailing structure of reality. When this structure was changed by the development of experimental data and scientific thought, the view of the universe changed, but Burke maintains there is no basis to believe that the "scientific" view is any more valid. "The truth is relative." Fortunately, one can skip this chapter and view this book as a history of the evolution of the ideas of physics, chemistry, geology and biology, which it is.

In view of the current controversy over intelligent design, the chapter on the changes in the geological interpretation of the earth and how it spawned the theory of evolution is particularly enlightening. It draws into clearer perspective why the theory of evolution and the geological view of an earth that is billions of years old is such a threat to the paradigm believed by fundamental Christians.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing Less Than The History Of How Rational Thinkers Advanced The Human Race.......2005-09-23

James Burke's book traces history backward and conceives of progress as a series of brillant achievements that create in their influence outstretching ripples that set off the strides humans have made throughout time. The witty Burke explores these watershed moments that took humanity forward, each setting others in motion, crafting a ladder upon which, rung leading to rung, our species has reached the places where it is today. Several key thinkers are focused upon and certain events, some overlooked by popular history, are highlighted. This book makes for an enlightening and mentally-provocative study of the achievements of the human past.

5 out of 5 stars A great Book on the history of Technology.......2005-04-30

After you read this book, you will look at the world in a whole new way.It outlines on how random the pace of discovery of new ideas and technology really is. If you want to be really challenged intellecually, then go no further. Mr. Burke has done an outstanding job. I just wish that I could afford the DVD that is based on this book.
