Basic Introduction to Sports Writing.......2007-07-11
This handbook is a very basic introduction to sports writing. It's written at what appears to be a junior high/high school level for kids looking at sportscasting as a career. I was expecting something a little more comprehensive, something along the lines of an MLA styleguide...But, then again, it is "just" sports writing. Doesn't take a genius, I guess!
Book Description

Review for photography analysis book.......2007-04-11
I bought this book for a class. It is a collection of essays by photography critics and theorists examining photography throughout history. It served its purpose for the class and I did find some of our required reading interesting but it wouldn't be my choice for everyday reading.
a comprehensive text for contemporary photography.......2007-02-08
This is the only required book I have ever made my college photography students buy.

Above Washington. The Nation's capitol is here celebrated with the eye of history and a elan of today's headlines Never before have America's monuments been so dramatically and lovingly displayed, as shown by Robert Cameron's aerial views and introduction by Alistaie Cooke.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting Perspective.......2006-12-04
This book provides a unique perspective to a great city. Some similar "picture books" just provide photos of major buildings or important places but it's hard to determine how they all tie together. With this book you can clearly see how the pieces come together. It also does a nice job of showing Washington's beautiful open and green spaces - which is unique among major American cities. Adding a few historical photos is a nice touch.
I end up looking through these pictures on a regular basis.
Dazzling D.C........2005-05-17
I have always had a major appreciation of Robert Carmeron's work and this is one of his best. Granted it's hard to make Washington look bad, it's is so wonderfully laid out, but in this book she never looked better. Though the pictures are from the early 80's, most of the momuments are present and the city is timeless anyway. Mr. Carmeron is such a talent and the angles he gets are just amazing. If you love Washington, or just like great photography quite frankly, you will love this book.
Ordinary Joes Opinion.......2004-01-20
I sell books on Amamzon and I was listing this book and double checking it's conditon when I became drawn into the book.
This is an excellent book for the history buff, school library,or for anyone who has never been to Washingtton CD.
The before and after pictures are especially interesting.
If you are planing a trip to the capitol this would be a good book to read and reread first. Then you could compare the views when you return .
This would give you an excellent "feel" for the changing "life" of the capitol.
A nice pictorial - with dated pictures.......2002-12-21
Robert Cameron is undoubtedly one of the best urban aerial photographers in the country. However, the landscape of Washington has changed so dramatically in the twenty years since this book was released that anyone with a lot of knowledge about the area will be disappointed by what's missing.
It does contain a wide breadth of pictures, some which are definitely extraordinary. However, the book needs to be updated in order to capture the modernization in architecture and planning that has proliferated in Washington D.C. and the surrounding area since its initial publication.
The best of its kind.......2000-01-05
Washington, DC is an unique capital city and Robert Cameron shares his birdeye's view with us in this marvelous volume. For residents and vistors alike, this is extraordinary record of the city, particularly the juxtaposition of old and contemporary photographs. Others try to emulate Cameron in this genre, but he is the master who makes it look easy.
Book Description
"This collection of classic essays in the study of visual culture fills a major gap in this new and expanding intellectual field. Its major strength is its insistence on the importance of three central aspects of the study of visual culture: the sign, the institution and the viewing subject. It will provide readers, teachers and students with an essential text in visual and cultural studies." -
Janet Wolff, University of Rochester
Visual Culture: The Reader provides an invaluable resource of over 30 key statements from a wide range of disciplines. Although underpinned by a focus on contemporary cultural theory, this reader puts issues of visual culture and the rhetoric of the image at centre stage.
Divided into three parts, The Culture of the Visual, Regulating Photographic Meaning, Looking and Subjectivity, this reader enables students to make hitherto unmade connections across art, film and photography history and theory, semiotics, history, semiotics and communications, media studies, and cultural theory. The key statements are from the work of:
Visual Culture: The Reader sets the agenda for the study of Visual Culture and will be an essential sourcebook for researchers and students alike.
This is the reader for the module The Image and Visual Culture (D850) - part of The Open University Masters in Social Sciences Programme.

Breathtaking photographs highlight this bird's-eye-view of the greatest city in the world, New York City. Introduction by George Plimpton.
Customer Reviews:
The Big Apple Never Looked So Good.......2005-05-14
Let me first say I love New York, it is quite simply the most energetic, vibrant, alive place on earth. This book does the city such a service, it is spectacular and photographs just amazing. Mr. Cameron is such a singular talent and he does it hanging out of a helicopter. This book really captures the city and lets the viewer see the hidden New York, that very few see. I love the photos of Central Park, you have no idea what an oasis it is until you see it from high above. Some photos are in summer some are in winter and you get to see the city in all its various incarnations. Mr. Cameron also includes some vintage photos to let the viewer see how much the city has changed. I only wish that Mr. Careron had been able to photograph my city of Houston, she would have welcomed him with opened arms. I highly recommend this book, you won't be disappointed.
Gorgeous pictures, a bit outdated.......2005-03-02
I haven't found any picture book of Manhattan that's as sharp, descriptive and beautiful as this one. Unfortunately, it is a bit outdated--for those seeking a realistic portrayal--because of new construction and destruction in New York City.
Glorious collection.......2004-04-21
Robert Cameron's "Above New York: A Collection of Historical and Original Aerial Photographs of New York City" sets itself apart from other similar books. In no particular order:
a) the photos are unbelieveably crisp and the printing is of top-notch quality;
b) don't ask me how, but Mr. Cameron makes the city look like a place where human beings actually live and work, rather than making the cityscape look like an architectural diorama;
c) other boroughs are represented! New York is not just Manhattan, as so many other books would have you think.
The contrast of the modern skyline with the older photographs is very effective, as others have mentioned. But what is also appealing is the changes of the skyline between the time these photos were taken (ca. 1988) and today, as we New Yorkers would notice. The images of the World Trade Center are poignant, but I'm glad that the publishers did not update the book, in order to remove them. As time takes its healing course, we can look back fondly on those buildings--still with pain, but now with some acceptance. "Above New York: A Collection of Historical and Original Aerial Photographs of New York City" remains a glorious collection that has yet to be eclipsed in quality.

The Best Photographic Book.......2002-01-17
This is the best photographic book I have ever seen. Its pictures of The Big Apple are magnificent! Comparative pictures taken in years past, many in the 1920s, show how sections of the city have changed. Whether one is a fan of New York and who isn't, you will enjoy this book. It makes me want all the other "Above" books now.
Great book.......2001-12-10
This book is really great. I recommend it to anyone who loves NY!
Book Description
Here's an easy-to-use guide to taking great pictures with any camera-including digital cameras and equipment. This comprehensive manual presents information on both basic techniques and creative photography more clearly and completely than any other book available.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book to improve your photography skills.......2005-06-19
This book is not for absolute beginners. You won't appreciate all the concepts unless you've already been experimenting for a while and are now ready to move to the next level. Digital camera owners take note, every photography concept in this book applies equally to your digital camera so don't feel you need to get a book for digital cameras. For post processing of digital pictures, definetely get another book. This book teaches the basics that every camera operator should know regardless of digital or analog. The book also very clearly explains its concepts with excellent examples of photographs.
Superb, thorough, easy to read, and practical.......2002-11-13
This is one of the best all-rounder books I've read on understanding the basics of photography. It is quite thorough yet takes you step-by-step thru the whole process and also covers digital imaging workflow. Another thing I like is that it covers other formats besides 35mm SLR, like the medium and large cameras, including studio lighting techniques and working in a B&W darkroom. You learn to appreciate where the SLR and point-and-shooters stand in the hierarchy of professional photography, and so are the wiser when choosing the proper setup for your photographic objectives.
It also makes meaningful recommendations when applying certain techniques. For example, in macro photography, it covers the whole gamut from close-up filters to extension tubes, and gives the pro and cons of using each setup. Another example: with filters, it recommends the use of square ones with holders because it is more flexible than screw-on filters (you can adjust the placement of graduating colours) and you only need to purchase a single polariser that can be shared with many lenses of differing thread diameter. Tips like these can be found in every topic.
Of course, it goes beyond the technicalities and discusses ways to improve your artistic abilities and photographic styles. Containing beautiful colour photographs, it emphasises exploration, previsualisation, and simplicity. And lots of practice!
Definitely highly recommended.
Good Stuff.......2001-02-09
This manual contains many photography tips with colorful examples to improve your photos.

Customer Reviews:
not up to par with 365 days.......2003-01-31
Perhaps I am slightly biased, being not only an adult, but I read the original 365 days edition first. I am always on the lookout for children oriented books that help teach geography and anthropology, so naturally I jumped towards this one. While the book takes on the nice perspective of Yann Arthus-Bertrand's grandson, who explains what his grandfather does and what aerial photography is, there are many flaws thereafter.
The book highlights certain photographs and explains where they were taken and something about the place they occur. Unfortunetly, whoever chose which images to put into the book focused largely on Africa - Morrocco to be specific, and ignored some regions of the world entirely. I understand that Arthus-Bertrand cannot fly everywhere, but the original 365 days book covers more countries and continents.
Secondly, the text has poor science for the grade the book is supposedly aimed at. While I understand this isn't a textbook, it should still be educational.
Lastly, I was slightly dissapointed in how the location of where these countries actually are was underplayed. Didn't we just hear the horrid results of a worldwide geography examination, that clearly showed that we need to put more geography into education?
I do want to add though, that the majority of the photographs were well chosen for the target audience, and I think that its important that the additional perspective of aerial photography is added to a child's education. For a child, I recommend this book, but for a family, sharing 365 days would do just as well.

Above London. Visitors to England who marvel at this lush land on their first incoming flight now have a volume to treasure forever. Here are the famed gardens, the majestic estates, the granduer of centuries of architecture. Along with Robert Cameron's areial photographs Alistair Cooke's text is brimming with the raconteur's characteristic wit and insight. The pictorial essay begins at the Thames and follows the history of the beloved city well into the countryside.
Customer Reviews:
Over London.......2007-09-20
This may be suitable only for total London geeks like myself, who pore over maps and photos of the best city in the world. It is very satisfying to identify places one has visited, as seen from the air. It goes a little farther afield than I have personally wandered, of course, and reveals warts and all, but for the price this is a very nice addition to any London book collection.
Best in Breed and Best in Show. Buy It........2006-07-01
'Above London' by aerial photographer, Robert Cameron and perennial Brit commentator, Alistair Cooke is one of four Cameron photo books of cities I have seen, and I have been to each of these four cities, and I firmly believe that between London, Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angles, this is by far the most delightful.
Most of this is probably due to the fact that London is so much more photogenic than those Yank cities, but it is probably also due to the addition of Cooke's commentary.
The star, by far, of this series is Cameron's superb skill with not only the camera, but in the selection of subject and angle of his shots. The clarity of detail is so great that you can literally count the panes of glass in the windows of the Greenwich Observatory from a distance of at least 1000 feet or more.
The aerial point of view of course also adds much to the quality of the book. For example, the infamous memorial to Prince Albert, across from the Royal Albert Hall seems hokey from the ground, but is a marvel of geometric design seen from the air. There are also some things which simply cannot be fully appreciated except by air, such as an overview of the Belgravia district around Belgrave Square.
One who has seen London first hand may get more from this book than those who have not been there, but at least it will be an incentive to go see the city for yourself.
Lucsious London.......2005-05-14
I am such a huge fan of Robert Cameron, but eventhough I think this book is amazing it in not his best, the photographs just are not as vivid for some reason and though some are spectacular some are not, which is so unusual for a Cameron book. Having said that I still highly recommend this book, even an average Cameron is better than the best of anyone else, he is that good. Though the book is a bit dated it still is worth having in your collection I assure you, it still has photos of things I have never seen photoed elsewhere.
The flower of cities all..........2003-05-21
Robert Cameron and Alistair Cooke teamed up to produce a wonderful visual account of London in the late 20th century, a stunning piece that will serve as a guide for generations of what London was like during this period. I know archaeologists who would sell their souls for such a record of previous historical periods. But, the historic value of such a record is probably not the reason to have it.
Cameron had produced similar books over San Francisco, Los Angeles, Hawaii, Washington D.C., and Yosemite (perhaps more by now). Alistair Cooke (yes, the Masterpiece Theatre host) convinced him to
'...collaborate on a more challenging project: a new view of a capital city that has neither picturesque mountains nor the dependable climate of Cameron's previous subjects, but one that offers as much variety and as many visible relics of centuries of history as any city on earth.'
The first plates show maps from the Middle Ages, and the same aerial view today, side by side: one can see some of the same streets and patterns, a bridge in the same location, but also (naturally) great differences. The pattern of Chelsea remains as a framework from the days of the Duke of Beaufort in some ways (including Cheyne Walk), and very different in others. A French drawing of St. James' Park looks very familiar, with the difference being the absence of Admiralty Arch which helped transform the Mall into one of the great processional routes.
Included is a drawing from the Victorian era that shows the then-new Palace of Westminster; four Frechmen proved the ability to use ballooning to scale new heights (alas, only one survived the ascent to 28,000 feet); in 1886 Wyllie and Brewer went up west of Westminster Abbey to make a drawing, including the smog in which London 'luxuriated' -- as a sign of the energy and prosperity of the world's first port and the capital of Empire.
Juxtaposing an aerial view of St. Paul's surrounded by bomb damage with the current view, the resilience of London can be seen. London has suffered destruction various times, and always bounced back.
After the historical tour, the book takes a tour of London by the river Thames, then branches out into the Central City, the South and West, the North and West, and then follows the river out of the city into Windsor and countryside environments.
One fun section include a collection of aerial views of festivals and 'fun' spots: the Oval, Wembley, Lords cricket ground, the Henley Regatta, Ascot, and, of course, Wimbeldon.
Each series of photographs is accompanied by Cooke's particularly witty and sometimes elegantly-scathing commentary (one can tell when he thinks that progress was not for the better), such as his commentary on the Wimbledon photographs:
'There was a time when the All-England Lawn Tennis Club's Wimbledon courts were surrounded by open meadows and a small enclosure for the nobs who owned automobiles. Today the area of car parks is greater than that of 'the action', and during the fortnight of the championship the cars desecrate the golf course in the adjoining Wimbledon Park.'
A fun and interesting book, one that is deserving of closer inspection. If you've ever been to London, this book will bring back memories and give a perspective that one rarely gets of the city. If you've never been to London, this will inspire you to plan your trip!
A fascinating book.......2002-09-17
Anyone who's ever spent time in London (or any historic and picturesque region) will see the city in a different way with this book of aerial views. Other reviewers have commented on the need for an update (particularly since the Millenium building boom), but essentially, the sweep of London history remains as it was: the Tower of London, the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, Whitehall, Hyde Park, Hampstead, the Thames, etc. And there's the undeniable thrill of saying "I was there," since virtually every area is covered. This book also adds a dimension to travel that we don't often consider: how buildings and streets really are situated in the places we visit, and our relation to them. After traveling on foot over most of central London, I never realized how much I covered until I bought this book.

Customer Reviews:
Too many errors.......2003-12-23
I am not sure whether he has used those cameras or not, but
too many mistakes, non-exist features, wrong descriptions ...
Latest Edition -- Lacks Technical Editing.......2001-11-14
This latest edition of the "Nikon System Handbook" is really starting to irritate me. First of all, many of us who have bought and read any of Moose's books pretty much know that he's a bought and paid for Nikon agent, but this edition seems to lack any sort of quality control whatsoever. I routinely find technical errors on nearly every page. With some of the lens descriptions he's merely plagiarized Nikon's factory spec sheets and descriptions but he never bothers to put them into current year context. If you are basing lens and camera buying decisions upon Moose's comments, keep in mind that Moose is not that long with his Nikon experience, and guess who's PAYING for those lenses? His standard phrasology of this and that lens being "tack sharp" gets boring and is frankly inaccurate. If Moose would actually READ his own book I would think that he would surely see the inaccuracies that he's spreading around. If you want more accurate Nikon equipment reviews (...)buy anything from Peter Braczko, e.g., the Nikon Pocket Book. Bjørn is not a paid Nikon field agent,--he's a Norwegian outdoor photographer with some of the best practical experience with things Nikon. Moose is a babe in the woods by comparison.
Fills in the blanks.......2001-07-22
Owning older Nikon equipment and/or wishing to purchase some, this book is useful. I purchased this book to identify when certain Nikon lenses were in production. I had to update my knowledge of the Nikon world. This was most helpful when I had to replace a lens I had dropped...OOPS...In addition the Flash chapter was illuminating in regards to the many speedlights that Nikon has to offer. Listing the benefits and drawbacks to certain models helped me meet my needs on Ebay. However, more subjective than objective, it still is worth the price if you're in the market for used Nikon equipment.
Get the Brackzo book, not this one........2001-04-18
This guy obviously knows a lot about photography, but he makes a lot of statements that are nothing but fluff, and are not bourne out by fact. He pans lenses that everyone else in the Nikon world raves about, and always pushes the most current Nikon gear, even when some of it is poorly rated by the rest of the community. If you want a good pictorial overview of the entire Nikon system, with serial numbers, production dates, etc .... then get the Brackzo book or the Nikon Compendium. This one is a lot of personal bias, heresay, and not a very useful reference. After you've seen the Brackzo book, you'll realize what a silly little exercise this one is, and what a waste of money and time it is.
Essential for Nikon owners.......2001-03-01
Next to my Nikon F3 HP, I think this book is one of my best investments. Since I'm just a amateur photographer, this book guides me through the complicated world of Nikon system. Without it I would be lost! If you've ever tried to find information on discontinued products (all the good stuff) from Nikon's web site then you'll know it's nonexistence! May be I'm not looking in the right direction, but I like to have a source available to me whenever I need to make purchase decisions. And since majority of the used Nikkor lenses are not cheap, it's good to have a non-bias, honest oppinion. If you shop at camera collector shows, then you'll definitely want this book! Overall 5 stars, because this books is very well written and well presented. The paper used to print this book are pretty good paper stocks, because it stands up to my constant flipping and red pen markings.

Book Description
Representation and Photography contains 12 classic articles by important thinkers such as John Berger, Victor Burgin, Griselda Pollock, Jo Spence, and John Tagg. These seminal essays were first published between 1976 and 1981 in Screen Education, the influential journal that pioneered the teaching and study of the visual image. They applied to the still image many of the new ideas derived from semiotics, Marxism, and psychoanalysis that were being developed within the related field of film studies. In this book they are collected together for the first time.
