I purchased the book because it states that you could get many of the test documents as a download. The truth is they are not available and if you go to the link provided, the page is empty.

Other than that I found the book had good information but some of the procedures could not be followed because of the lack of access to the files.

5 out of 5 stars Advanced Photoshop Elements 5.0 for Digital Photographers.......2007-07-07

This is the companion book to Philip Andrews' "Photoshop Elements 5 - A Visual Introduction to Digital Photography", also from Focal Press. This title is aimed at those who have mastered the basics covered in the first book and wish to get to grips with some of the more advanced digital imaging techniques that are possible with the software. Containing 11 chapters, the book covers various topics including: camera and scanner techniques, working with RAW files, advanced image changes, darkroom techniques on the computer, making better panoramas, extending your web abilities and producing great prints, to name a few. The companion website is again a great addition to the book, where there are further resources, including videos and all the photos used in the book for you to download and practice on. As a digital photographer myself, I have found all of Philip Andrews' books extremely clear and helpful and this one is no exception. Again, he has written one of the best books available on the subject, in his usual clear and engaging style. The informative step-by-step instructions, full colour screen shots, and the attractive presentation throughout, only serve to reinforce the reasons to buy it.

5 out of 5 stars What every serious photographer needs.......2007-06-27

I absolutely LOVE this book! If there is ANY question that you may have when editing in Elements 5.0, this book has the answer!! Someone recommended this book to me, and I have not looked back since. I HIGHLY recommend this book to ANYONE who has Elements 5.0. Get it....., you will NOT be sorry!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide for the non-newbie.......2007-06-17

As an owner of a number of decent Photoshop and Photoshop Elements books, this one is pretty close to the top of the list. It's very well organized, from the table of contents through the presentation of the specific topic of interest. Well illustrated also.

What I also found valuable is that each topic/task has which version of Photoshop Elements it works with. So, even if you're not a Photoshop 5 user, or will be upgrading soon, this would be a good investment.

Two other highlights: 1) His treatment of RAW processing...very sane and easy to follow, and 2) presentation of the workflow for digital photography.

Wait...one more! The guide on printing is quite good too. If you're like me, you may be very happy with the picture, less than happy with the inkjet print. Good ideas on how to help here.

Very impressed with this book. Highly recommend!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent value, worth the money.......2007-01-31

This book will suit anybody that has had some experience with Photoshop Elements 5 previously. I highly recommend the book to anybody that wishes to further expand their knowledge of the product

Book Description

Final Cut Pro is a serious tool for serious (usually professional) editors--which means that if you're like most users, you already know the software's interface, are well-versed in editing basics, and are interested in just one thing: going as deep as possible with the software's tools and features. This is the book for you. In Apple Pro Training Series: Advanced Editing and Finishing Techniques in Final Cut Pro 4, the post-production and training company, DigtalFilm Tree, provides step-by-step instruction in all of the tasks real filmmakers are most interested in: using Mattes and filter effects, creating different "film looks," achieving complex transitions, working with video scopes, adjusting contrast, balancing color and luminance, and more.

Each chapter in this self-paced, Apple-authorized guide represents a self-contained lesson--with a project to complete, a review section, and bonus exercises to reinforce what you've learned. The accompanying DVD includes lesson files and all the materials you'll need to complete the book's projects for a comprehensive course in Final Cut Pro.

DigitalFilm Tree is a West Hollywood-based post-production and design house and authorized training center for both Apple and the Motion Picture Editors Guild. The group, which includes members of the original Final Cut Pro design team, began a revolution in the post-production industry by proving that innovative and affordable systems can produce professional results.

For this book, DigitalFilm Tree assembled an unparalleled team of experts, each contributing his or her area of expertise. Join film director and editor Michael Wohl, effects and color correction specialist Andrew Balis, audio pros Martin Sitter and Mary Plummer, type effects wizard Steve Martin, veteran DVD producer Yan Shvalb, and award-winning film editor Daniel Fort as they bring together their decades of experience in this consummate guide to Final Cut Pro's powerful advanced features.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Certainly helped, but don't really have any use for 80% of the material.......2005-07-28

I would reccommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about using special fx, filters, motion, compositing, titles, or "sound track" in final cut pro, but to those who'd rather do all of this in after effects and would like to know more about codecs, HD, workflow, audio mastering, encoding, compressing, formats, and delivery in Final Cut Pro, I'd have to guess that there's probably something better out there. It would be unfair to say that this book ignores these subjects, but it certainly does not concentrate on them. I'm not dissappointed in my purchase for I certainly learned a lot, but I did expect a bit more. Good for what it's worth, but not great.

5 out of 5 stars The answer to every question, "it's in there!".......2004-11-07

I'm sold on the Apple's Pro Training series for Final Cut Pro. Final Cut Pro 4 and Final Cut Pro Advanced, offer training very economically. If you work independently and learn well from text books, these two offer clear instructions that can be trusted and followed with confidence. By following them carefully, I accomplish complicated tasks, such as animating titles, easily. Although, there are a few misplaced characters there aren't any missing words. By following Apple's lesson plan, I learned how to use tools in FCP. Some of them are so clever they're difficult to comprehend. The slip edit tool, for instance, lets you change which portion of the source file will be shown in a clip without lengthening the sequence. It took awhile before I could understood what was going on. It wasn't like anting I'd encountered before. How to operate the levers, buttons, and bells is important but these two books also teach how to make movies. For example, Final Cut Pro 4 describes how to slip the video into synch with the audio tracks rhythm pattern: how to finesse the leopard to move his head at a specific time in the music. After completing many tutorials in these books, I appreciate documentaries more. I've heard it referred to as a mid-range video editor but I can't foresee needing more power to edit my DV. At first I wondered why LiveType came bundled with Final Cut and why it took up so much room on my hd. After building the example projects, in chapters 19 and 20 of Final Cut Pro Advanced, however, I don't care how much room it needs. My motion titles impressed everyone saw them. Even experienced FinalCut Pro users may learn something about LiveType by reading this book. These books cover color correction, working with film, project management, nesting sequences, multi-track trims -- I'm reminded of the jingle about a good spaghetti sauce, the answer to every question, 'it's in there! I'll be using these two books, Final Cut Pro 4 and Final Cut Pro Advanced, for a long time. Tip: The lessons will go smoother if you read ahead.

2 out of 5 stars Problematic..........2004-06-27

I found several mistakes in the book. In one chapter it is recommends that you apply the 3 way color correction filter, when in fact you needed to use the normal color correction filter. I was able to figure out what was actually intended, but it baffles me why Apple as well as Peachpit Press would put out a book like this without a quality assurance check. This was not the only issue with the lessons. In my copy, on lesson 21 it asks you to modify the auxillary 24fps timecode of a clip, but I was unable to do so with the file that was included in the DVD.

If Final Cut Pro was as buggy as this book was, I would have switched over to Premier a long time ago. I am concurrently teaching myself Shake with Apple's Pro Training series for that program and haven't noticed anywhere near the mistakes that I have with this one.

I do have to admit I learned a hell of a lot from this book, WHEN THE LESSONS WORKED, but next time they should have someone do a QA check on the files as well as fact check on the lessons.

BTW, Peachpit has not addressed any of my emails regarding these problems. Not Good!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2004-04-19

A very clear definition of how to do nearly everything in FCP4. Having only the knowledge of how to do a simple cut, I was able to follow the book and understand it. I'm still in high school, so you know if I can do this, you can as well. The book contains with it a DVD that offers 8.3 gigabytes of lessons that you give you all the shots you need, and then you open the book and the book explains what to do with the shots given to you. Depending on your current skill level, you can skip any lessons that you already know. The book does require some knowledge of the interface, like the canvas, viewer, browser, and timeline, and how they all function. I recommend the book to anyone that wants to learn FCP4 very well.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2004-03-21

I only wish I had more time to spend with this book. I am fortunatly busy editing! Everytime I sit down with this thing it changes the way I edit. It is clearly written and takes you through good editing techniques as well as how to use FCP to accomplish them. Best $35 I ever spent.

3 out of 5 stars An Introductory Guide.......2003-08-31

Enfield's book has a very impressive sounding title but compared to The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes (Christopher James), or Coming Into Focus (John Barnier), it falls far short of being "A Complete Guide." This book is a nice introduction to some of the techniques a beginning student, interested in the subject, might investigate.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this book.......2003-03-11

Photo-Imaging is beautifully written and illustrated--an essential volume for anyone interested in alternative photographic processes. The writing is clear and simple. Jill Enfield makes it easy to experiment with new photographic techniques. There are lots of helpful tips and hints based on Enfield's extensive experience with alternative processes. I particulary like the detailed supplier information she lists.

While I sometimes wished she had included additional historical and chemical details, it's a minor quibble because this book has carefully distilled the essential information needed to get up and running with each process. This book is a great value considering the low cost and the extensive information included. No fluff or filler--just concise information.

5 out of 5 stars Winner of 2002 Golden Light Book Awards Best Technical Book.......2002-12-19

Photo-Imaging by Jill Enfield has received the 2002 Golden Light Book Awards Best Technical Book Award. The award is sponsored by The Maine Photographic Workshops, The International Film Workshops
and Rockport College. A panel of distinguished jurors reviews books and selects those that make a significant contribution to the art and literature of the medium. Submissions are judged on qualities such as writing, editing, photo reproduction, design and printing, and the contents' overall importance to their perspective mediums. The Jury, which reviews all entries, is comprised of several renowned photographers, filmmakers, publishers, writers and editors.

5 out of 5 stars It's about time..........2002-11-21

I've seen Jill Enfield's work frequently in magazines and books, and was thrilled when I found out she was writing her own text. I teach experimental photography at a university, so any book of this nature that comes on the market, I buy. When this came in the mail from Amazon.com (promptly, I might add) I was impressed. Watson Guptill knows how to lay out a textbook so that it appeals to the reader, and is well supported by images, not only with examples of the processes but with "how to" pictures, also. It is user friendly, especially for those who are somewhat newer to the photographic medium and experimental in nature. That said, I learned new things (e.g. the chapter on tintypes) that I will use in my experimental photography class!
These topics are included: black and white infrared, liquid emulsion, enlarging negatives for alternative processes, ink jet transfers, polaroid processes, cyanotypes, kallitypes, platinum printing, palladium printing, tintypes, hand coloring, and other stuff. It is a good combination of what are traditionally termed "alt process" (platinum, cyanotypes, etc.) and what are more experimental things to try.
For this type of book the price at Amazon.com is excellent--most books of this caliber range from [$$$].

2 out of 5 stars Good if you're into color management and 3rd party software (other than PSCS).......2005-06-22

The book is full of examples using numerous (and sometimes pricey) 3rd party software and plugins for photoshop. Color management for monitors, printing, and B&W and infrared were focuses of this book, with SEVERAL chapters on B&W alone. Ther was also a lot on printing with your own inkjet printer (most of us use 3rd party professional printing services). The last parts of the book go over making "digital art" or complete collages and pics with photoshop (not photography at all), and the last section deals with turning your photos into paintings using filters.

The description of most everything is pretty broad in nature, and when discussing sharpening (always a hot topic), the suggestion is to "Use USM and keep the pixel radius and threshold pretty low, while changing the % to get the desired effect". That's about the 1 sentence on sharpening without using some 3rd party PS plugin.

Overall, not recommended. I am still looking for a good all-in-one photography book.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2005-05-28

First off, I'm an extremely amateur photographer, so I want to own up to that right away, since I realize that most of the people who buy this book are likely to be professional photographers. I'm not going to do a normal review to discuss the relevant chapter info either. The publisher's official write-up is better for that sort of thing, in my opinion. What I will say is this: I was slow to enter into the world of digital photography. I had the regular middle-range inexpensive digital camera, but whenever I went anywhere that I knew the pictures were going to really matter, I still lugged my SLR with all the great lens choices and accessories.

Last month, after reading through this book as mostly a curiosity, I took the plunge and bought a digital SLR. This book makes you truly appreciate the benefits of digital photography and the flexibility you can achieve through digital that you just can't get with your film negatives. I want to stress in advance that I am not an "advanced" digital photographer, but I still found this book to be beneficial and instrumental in bringing me around to this format. I wouldn't have wanted a basic book for this, since I would have outgrown that with the first round of pictures I took with my new camera.

Now, I'm in the process of working back through this book as I play with my new camera, and I couldn't be happier with the results. I definitely recommend this book for anyone who is the type of person who craves a little extra know-how when it comes to getting the most out of your work or hobby. If you are an amateur like me, don't be intimidated by the fact that this title was written for professionals who have advanced skills. When it comes to photographs, learning from the professional level is exactly what you want to do. Your pictures can't help but benefit.

Book Description

Portraiture tends to rely on standardized, established lighting techniques, but most photographers know that subscribing to traditional methods does not always flatter every subject. The techniques collected in this guide will heighten the senses of mystery and drama in a digital photographer's work by enhancing shape and contrast, keeping images fashionable and appealing with less reliance on natural light, and illuminating a subject's eyes without producing catchlights. In this manner, textbook lighting setups can act as a springboard to creating personal and artistic high-quality portraits featuring new, radically-altered lighting effects. Multiple series of before-and-after photos comprehensively illustrate how to utilize these new methods to create emotion-evoking works of art that do more than simply capture the likeness of a subject.

2 out of 5 stars You've got to be kidding!.......2006-07-11

I have created portraits for over 30 years. I read every book I can to observe the creative techniques that others use. I was stuned to start this book and look at the techniques. I thought that they were reflected the photography of an amateur, rather than a professional, especially one who is writing a book.
There were some statements that were made that were of interest.
However, the bulk of the photographs were poorly exposed and that was enough to be distracting.
I also found that the models used, no matter how much preframing the author did, did not reflect the mood that he had suggested that he accomplished.
All in all this is one of the few books in photography, that I am sorry I had purchased.

5 out of 5 stars Great Knowledge and Writing.......2006-05-28

Tom Ang's books often seem to get low ratings. However, I really enjoy them. Tom writes with an information density that is really impressive. Its definately not a "breezy" style. So whether you will like his books, and this one as well, depends upon what you like to read. If you like deep intricate detail, than his books are I think the best in digital photography. This book has particularly impressive sections on scanning and printing.

I was fairly disappointed with this book, I was hoping for it to concentrate more on the photography aspect rather than photo-editing techniques. It feels more like a Photoshop book with a 32 page introduction to digital cameras written for a graphic designer, not a photographer.

3 out of 5 stars Good Intro for those new to the field.......2005-03-19

This title of this book is a little misleading. It isn't really a guide to "Creative" digital photography, and it doesn't really describe techniques for "Mastering" a digital SLR camera. Nevertheless, it is a comprehensive overview of digital photography and the various processes that distinguish it from film photography. A more accurate title might be "Amphoto's Introductory Guide to Digital Photography." In other words, the book is a good primer for those new to the field or those considering the possibility of switching from film to digital. It is not a book about creative techniques; it does not go into depth on any specific technique; and the information it discusses is not limited to SLR cameras. The book touches on many of the features that one might wish to consider when choosing a digital camera, although not in any organized way. It also touches on many of the techniques that can be used to manipulate digital images using photo editing software, but again, not in great detail. In short, the book is a good introduction to the subject, but not something you are going to keep on your bookshelf for future reference.

2 out of 5 stars Big let down.......2005-01-17

I'm not surprised that no-one else has reviewed this book, as it was a great disappointment to me, even though I'm part of the intended audience - a professional photographer changing from film to digital. Unfortunately I found little new information here, and what I did find was not clearly enough explained for me to be able to apply. Perhaps the greatest disappointment, though, are the images. I never fail to be inspired by images in other Amphoto publications, but those in this book are too ordinary to warrant publication or emulation. Guess I'll go back to learning the hard way - by trial and error.

Digital photographers can now attain the enduring beauty of black-and-white photography in their own work! There’s more to monochrome than just discarding the color in Photoshop, but many books simply treat it as an afterthought. Not this one! John Beardsworth teaches every major method of making a color picture black and white, and explains what kind of images are best, and why. Both ambitious newcomers and advanced enthusiasts will learn how to achieve the richest tonal depth and balance, use black and white to interpret your subject for the viewer, reproduce historic and darkroom processes, add creative and special effects, and produce exhibition-quality prints.
