Book Description
A sizzling story of decadence, drama and daring outfits! Audrey realizes she's in over her head when she gets embroiled with icy-cool banker, Sterling. His ideas of adult fun are more than she can handle, so she packs her bags and walks out of his luxury Florida apartment, heading back to Washington DC in search of a regular life with a regular guy. But for a girl like Audrey, this is not as easy as it sounds. When Patrick Dugan, the charismatic owner of an old-world bar, fixes Audrey in his sights, some strange alliances are about to be formed. Within a week Audrey talks her way into a job at Patrick's bar and a room in the apartment he shares with a drag queen jazz singer called Basil. The highly sexed roommates are soon getting intimate with each other, even experimenting with games of kinky SM sex. But Audrey soon suspects that Patrick is not all that he seems. Why is he pretending to be gay? And what is he covering up for his father, a pillar of the local community? Audrey is so affected by the enigmatic, dominant barman that she doesn't realise they are connected by a mutual adversary - a cold-hearted man who will take them all down if he doesn't get what he wants.

Surprised How Much I Liked It 4.5 Stars.......2006-12-14
I had read a couple of things by Emma Holly and didn't love or hate them. But after this book I will be reading more of Ms. Holly. The sex was hot (very important in erotica) and varied. Even the scenes involving male/male sex, which is not a thing for me, were well written and much better handled than other authors' treatment of simliar scenes.
Yes, Audrey has a lot of sex and with more than one person (although nowhere near the numbers of most more typical non-romantica erotica) and explores sub and dom relationships which involve bondage. The character is introduced in the middle of a punishment given by Sterling, her master/lover. Thier relationship has abusive overtones and Audrey leaves him and goes back to her old life in D.C. She begins staying with her best friend Tommy, who is in love with her. But soon gets a job at a bar owned by Patrick Dugan, who has been asked to look out for her, and excepts his invitation to move in with him. Patrick is trying to protect Audrey because Sterling, believing that Audrey is his possesion, is having her watched.
Patrick needs Audrey to trust him, so he pretends to be involved with Basil, the bars transvetite singer, who also comes to live at Patrick's large penthouse apartment. But Patrick is having a hard time fighting his attraction to Audrey, a natural sub. To further complicate things Basil is showing intrest in both of them. Through the course of the story Patrick must either learn to deal with his intamacy issues or lose Audrey. Audrey is learning that she can be submissive in her sex life (and plays at dominence a little) withought being misstreated. But the book deffinatly does not have your typical happily ever after ending. This is a more uncoventional love story and readers who dislike books where the characters have multiple partners, should probably skip this one. For readers who don't require monogamy enjoy!
*THIS WAS OKAY*.......2006-07-22
I actually liked the way this started out more than the way it ended. Audrey is a goof if you ask me. She takes advantage of the one guy who is true and sincere to her. I don't enjoy the games the 3 "roommates" play. This book could be passed up and you wouldn't be missing much.
Please.......2006-07-11
I love Emma Holly I'll be the first to admit it but this book was so wrong that I just don't know where to begin. Audrey likes to have sex. She likes to have sex with everyone. Thats basiclly the book in a nutshell. She seems to have no other qualities besides whats between her legs. Boring! Lets have alittle depth. Patrick was alittle likeable and then theres the drag queen roomate Basil (What). I don't know and I don't know if you will either. I read some other reviews and found theres to be good but unfortunetly I don't like everybody in the book having sex with one another. Mrs. Holly I would recommend giving a little more depth to your characters even tho it's erotica. If you like erotica try Rhyannon Byrd!
Not Her Best.......2005-10-20
Emma Holly is a very versatile writer who seems to understand people in a rare way, and know every dark fantasy you've ever had, committing it to paper.
Here she veers a little off.
Audrey is much more young and naive than her usual heroines; on a vacation she happily leaves her life to become a disrespected sex slave to a complete stranger, the very old and cold Sterling.
She escapes but he plants a tracking device in her nipple ring and finds she lands back in Boston with her best friend Tommy. He is a whiny mn who worships her and desperately desires sex to the point of pathetic begging and misogynistic demands. With Tommy there are slowly escalating scenes of her dominating him, which seems odd as she is very much a submissive at that point. She even dominates his girfriend Cynthia, yet another person who worships the great and two-dimensional Audrey.
Sterling asks old friend Senator Dugan to keep an eye on her, and Dugan dcides to stick it to him. He knows his son Patrick, a bar owner, is part of the group D/s scene and asks him to master the girl.
Patrick draws Audrey in an an unbelievable stroke of luck and realizes she is too skittish for the group scene. He asks her to move in with him and asks his drag queen nightly performer (at an Irish bar in Boston? What the HELL was Holly thinking????) Basil to pretend to be his gay lover, lulling her into submission.
Patrick discovers he likes men, not as much as women though; Audrey discovers she is a weak willed spineless twit with an amazing, uh, "asset" between her legs who wants to be cossetted and spoiled by day, chained and spanked by night.
Somehow, inexplicably, she falls in love with him and refuses Sterling when he comes for her. It seems without motivation, there is no real relationship between the bar owner and his new pet.
The sex is so weak, it reads like a husband and wife of 30 years decided to try a little light spanking to spice up their sex life. The D/s is nonexistent and the best sex scenes are Basil seducing Audrey when they first meet, Basil seducing Patrick in the kitchen, and Patrick dominating Basil while Audrey watches pretending to be a dominatrix.
The characters aren't fleshed out enough and the sex scenes were A: too far apart, and B: had no sensual anticipation leading up to them.
Audrey, unlike all of her other heroines, seems like an empty-headed spoiled beauty queen and I really would have liked for just one person to not be head-over-heels in love with her. Just one. That is, besides me.
Skip it, and try "Cooking Up A Storm" or "Menage" for her typically GREAT erotica.
Educating Audrey.......2005-07-15
Audrey is a naive young women off on a journey to sample every gourmet variety of sexual behavior she can find. She is SO varied in her ability to respond to people - male, female, and androgynes - that her claim to a B & D obsession is not all that credible, although she DOES love her pierced nipple jewlry. Her "forever"friends and sexual playmates Tommy and Cynthia are so sweet and believable, and the female impersonator Basil is WAY cool and oh so genuine. But the masterful well endowed hunk Patrick who is the overriding object of Audrey's affection turns out in the end to be a sucker for romance and enthusiastically bisexual himself! Still, this is vividly realistic and VERY graphic sexual writing. I will certasinly read more from Ms. Holly.

The Red Gloves Collection 1-4.......2007-08-09
It only takes a few hours to read one of the novels in The Red Gloves Collection, but you will remember them for a lifetime. Karen Kingsbury chooses a character in each phase of life -- a small child, a teenage girl, a young woman, a woman in her 80s -- to show how God uses those around us to bring us closer to Him. I bought copies of this book for my grandaughter and my mother. My mother is passing it to her friends.
Heartwarming.......2007-07-12
These stories are so great. They make you laugh, cry and reevaluate your own trials and blessings. Our children should read these.
Red Gloves.......2007-03-09
This is an really great collection. I started Karen Kingsbury because my ex-mother-in-law bought me Hannan's Hope as a Christmas gift. After reading that one I could not wait to read the rest. I recommend this book and all other Kingsbury book to anyone who is down on there luck or just needs to lift there spirt.
These will become your Christmas classics.......2006-12-24
Reviewed by Cherie Fisher for Reader Views (12/06)
The "Red Gloves Collection" is four beautifully written Christmas stories that will warm your heart forever. The author, Karen Kingsbury, has compiled her four Red Gloves Christmas classics into one volume. The stories all have the same themes in common, Christmas miracles, red gloves and discovering love. At first glance, the book seems overwhelming with over 600 pages, but the print is large and the stories can be quickly read. Or it could be that they were so wonderful that I could not wait to turn the pages to find out what would happen next.
The first book in the series is "Gideon's Gift." The story starts at Gideon's wedding which is a miracle in itself. As an 8-year old girl, Gideon fought and almost lost her life to leukemia. Instead of thinking only of herself during that time Gideon reaches out to an angry homeless person named Earl. Earl had some devastating things happen in his life that led to his homelessness and has given up on life. Gideon finds this unacceptable and asks God for a Christmas miracle that Earl will believe again. God gives Gideon that and so much more than she ever could of wished for.
"Maggie's Miracle" is the second story in the series. Jordan Wright is a lonely 8-year old boy who lives with his mother and grandmother since his father passed away two years earlier. He asks God for a Christmas miracle to bring him a new daddy. Jordan's mother, Megan, reads the letter and realizes how the death of her husband has affected her little boy. She tries to spend more time with Jordan but realizes that she cannot do it all and signs him up for a Healing Hearts program that matches Jordan up with a special friend to help him. Casey Cummins is the guy that Jordan is matched up with. He has faced his own tragedies and it turns out that Jordan helps him as much as he helps Jordan. Megan has given up on love, and Casey and Jordan are determined to help her find it again. The ending has a surprise twist that proves that Casey is truly meant to be in their lives.
I loved all four stories, but "Sarah's Song" is my personal favorite. The story is about Sarah Lindeman, an 86-year old woman who is dying of congestive heart failure. Sarah has decided to live her final days out in a nursing home where she can see the park bench that has meant so much to her. She has a 12-day Christmas tradition of un-wrapping a special ornament everyday and remembering her and Sam's story - a story of great love. She knows that this is her last Christmas and that she is supposed to help someone with this story before she dies. That person turns out to be Beth, who is going through a very difficult time in her life. She has given up on her marriage. She knows that if her story is heard by Beth, that a miracle will occur and Beth's life will be changed forever.
The last story, "Hannah's Hope" delivers wonderfully too. Hannah is a lonely 15-year old girl who lives with her grandmother. Her parents, foreign diplomats, are too busy to spend time with her, including Christmas this year. Hannah's asks for a Christmas miracle to spend Christmas with her parents. Feeling guilty about Hannah's upset over the change in the Christmas plans, her mother decides to tell Hannah the secret about her birth. She has another father, Mike Connors, who her mother left years ago and disappeared without a trace. Hannah has memories of this warm loving dad begins to search for him.
This is a beautiful collection that you will treasure. I highly recommend "The Red Gloves Collection" to people who enjoy uplifting stories, who read together as a family or need an inspiring Christmas gift.

Customer Reviews:
A little disappointing.......2007-07-29
I was looking for more on the instruction side of knitting with beads, not just patterns that utilize beads. The pictures weren't illuminated enough to see the garment or object. I guess I wouldn't recommend this one.
Lots of Variety!.......2007-05-23
Thank you for this great book. Whether you are knitting in the beads or adding them on there are lots of projexts to choose from!
Knitting with Beads: 30 Beautiful Sweaters..........2007-01-04
It is a great book for learning to knit with beads. It had all
the information I needed and great patterns to try. I have made
some really neat scarves and shawls using the patterns in the book.
Even Beginning Knitters Can Do It.......2004-07-09
This is an absolutely marvelous book, and not only for intermediate to advanced knitters as advertised. I learned to knit last Christmas and have already completed the sweater pictured in the upper left corner of the cover and, while it was a bit of a challenge, it came out beautifully. The individual sections in this book cover different techniques for applying beadwork to knitting - each with very clear, easy to read, detailed instructions. Also, those of you who already sew or embroider will find some patterns with basic knitting techniques with the beadwork sewn or embroidered onto the finished project. The projects range from simple to very challenging, from scarves to hats to sweaters, from minimal beading to complex bead designs. What fun!
Absolutely Georgous book!.......2004-05-10
A must have! I'm a relatively new knitter (but daring and will try even an advanced pattern!) and this book is absolutely beautiful. I am considering putting down a current project just so I can try one of these patterns!
I prefer unique items and I love the idea of knitting with beads to add even more glitz! This book is one for you if you want to be different!
Customer Reviews:
Depends upon the reader's background.......2007-08-23
I read this book because a Wall Street Journal story referred to it as "the" source for quality of earnings analysis. I was somewhat disappointed with the quantity and quality of new information and analytical techniques, but that's not a knock on the book. I think it boils down to your background. If you're a CFO, Controller or seasoned accountant, there may not be alot of new information here for you. The book may be much better for financial analysts that don't have a strong accounting background but need to be able to determine earnings quality. I personally found Creative Cash Flow Reporting (Mulford & Comiskey) to be more useful. Nevertheless, I'm glad to have Quality of Earnings in my library.
Still worth reading.......2004-05-18
17 years later and many things have changed. The desire of investors to accurately gauge the stability of the companies in their portfolios remains the same. The incentive of management with stock options to hide the true nature of what the reality of what the company's earnings have been remains strong. Some of the techniques mentioned will be hard to use when companies employ SPEs to hide their true indebtedness and derivative positions mask the Value at Risk. However, many of the technique still have value. The analysis of receivables and inventories can provide insight into the immediate future of the company. The techniques that have lost their clear edge are the debt and write-off analysis. Write-offs are now required by GAAP (although the "big bath" write-offs are still "non-recurring") and SPEs or variable interest entities can obscure debt. It is fascinating in light of Enron, WorldCom, Qwest, Tyco, and Adelphia the stories of companies in the 70s and 80s that were attempting to do the same thing (though often without the fraud). How little man changes through the ages.
Middle Markets.......2004-05-07
Long overdue is a middle market with different rules than those by which the traditional markets must be rated in terms of earnings, and standards, to prevent the wholesale financial shennanigans that took place during the late 90's as VC's funded IPO's and oversold them to the institutional markets. There has always been a very healthy start up market in the U.S. that has yet to be tapped for its vitality, and its uncertainty, that can be just as legitimately traded as NASDAQ and the tradtional market. Defining a method of doing that, and setting it up will provide the U.S. with the vehicle to prevent putting excess pressure on accountants and marketers to whittle away expenses and beef up assets to present healthier stocks than they are to take advantage of the speculatators that most young companies draw. In fact, there should be an entrepreneurial wild mustang market similar to the gold rush vitality that Americans come by so naturally, but apart from the traditional markets that require greater control and stability. Organizing such a market would greatly benefit both the industry, the opportunities for investment, and the many personnel who make their living serving the investment industry and its affiliates. Making such an early trader market by taking advantage of the VC interest in early entrance but allow them to cut out early would help to grow the markets exponentially.
Excellent to learn financial analysis.......2002-09-20
This book is very effective in introducing people to critical financial statement analysis. It helps to have some accounting background though. The material in this book will reinforce a lot of the important financial/accounting concepts that all investors should at least understand before committing to an investment. The author makes the accounting concepts interesting and accessible for most people. In short, the book is a great way to learn/reinforce important financial analysis techniques.
Indespensible for fundamental analysis.......2002-09-18
I got a lot out of this book. It has helped me a lot in my personal schooling of fundamental analysis. It is easily understood and comprehended by most anybody of average intelligence and belongs on every investor/traders bookshelf. You can tell that Thornton L. O'Glove knows his stuff and I only wish that he was still doing his Quality Of Earnings Report. I have owned it for a little over a month as of this review and have read it three times now getting more and more out of it every time. I obviously love it.
Happy Trading,
David Taggart

Some consider this comic book novel obtuse; others find it deeply intellectual. Whatever the reaction, it's hard to refute its daring originality and smooth artwork. Described as "a terrifying journey into madness," the story revolves around Clay Loudermilk as he stumbles upon the mysteries behind a snuff film. Soon he's involved with increasingly bizarre characters who hang in the air like stale cigarette smoke. Fans of movie director David Lynch who aren't already tipped to Daniel Clowes's popular work should take note.
Book Description
Daniel Clowes's first book remains a modern classic 15 years after its debut in Eightball #1, the comic book title that made Clowes a household name in comics circles. This surreal graphic novel is couched within a noir-ish detective structure and rich with recurring psychosexual motifs and imagery. The story follows a deadpan Candide named Clay Loudermilk, on a search for a former lover through a landscape that several critics have favorably compared to the works of David Lynch, Fellini, and Luis Buñuel, with elements of Dragnet and Russ Meyer films added for good measure. Clowes rigorously employs a dream logic as Clay spirals down a spare, unsettling wasteland, meeting three-eyed prostitutes, mutant waitresses, angry men with hair plugs, and orifice-less dogs with secret messages tattooed on their skin. As Clay attempts to untangle the vast conspiracy he finds himself a part of, Velvet Glove becomes a vivid and fantastic examination of futility, self-loathing and paranoia, and a masterpiece of postmodern fairy-telling,
Like A Velvet Glove returns in 2005 as Clowes and film director Terry Zwigoff put the finishing touches on Art School Confidential, the follow-up to their 2001 Academy Award-nominated film, Ghost World (based on the bestselling comic book of the same name). To be released in the late summer of 2005, Art School Confidential is sure to introduce an entirely new audience to Clowes's work, just as the Ghost World film did (pushing sales of the Ghost World graphic novel over 150,000 to date).

Lost in dream.......2007-10-01
I am a fairly recent Clowes fan (I've been reading for a couple years...started with Ice Haven). And as with most work I love, I tend to pleasure-delay other works by the artist. That said, I read David Boring at the beginning of the year, and just picked up and went through Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron.
Where David Boring and Ice Haven definitely seemed to cohere with some, albeit demented, climax at points, this book is a veritable pandora's box of narrative. The thing is all over the place, and there are plenty of characters that show up and then disappear forever, before you even get a chance to figure out their purpose.
In that way, it definitely holds the stuff of dreams, and meanders in completely unexpected ways. It's a total mind trip with a strangely comforting ending... comforting in that it finally seems to decode some of what Clowes set up throughout the book... it's hard to explain, just check it out.
Dark, weird, and great........2007-09-21
I may be biased, being a big Clowes fan, but I thought this book was great. If you read David Boring or a strip Clowes did called "The Gold Mommy" (I think), and you liked that sense of pervasive nightmarish unease that Clowes is so good at creating, then you will like this book. If you are not into creepy, dark, or bizarre themes, you may want to move along.
disturbing.......2005-11-13
Okay, this book was really hard for me to track down. I ordered it on amazon last year and it was out of stock and never shipped for months, so eventually I cancelled it. I finally got it not long ago from a comic shop.
I read the other reviews and I see what people mean. At first, I was confused. Then when I realized it was supposed to be bizarre and not make sense, I got into it. I liked it. The biggest complaint people seem to have is that it's not like "David Boring." I love his other books, and this one was good, but it is very different. It's very surreal and disturbing.
Seriously. I was extremely disturbed by some of the characters. My boyfriend asked me how it was and all I could say was "unsettling" and "bothersome" because it just makes you feel uncomfortable.
So yeah...be warned.
Frustrating........2005-09-01
I was a fan of Ghost World and David Boring. Daniel Clowes has a knack for putting real people in a world where everything is a bit askew. This book is older than the others and reviews lead me to believe it would be a bit more insane than the other books, but I had no idea...
We follow our rather dry hero, Clay, on a bizarre odyssey as he searches for his long lost lover after recognizing her in an obscene film. Typical Clowes' formula, but Clay's path is littered with feminist warmongers, dogs with no orifices, an admirer that strongly resembles a giant potato-fish hybrid, and some of the freakiest character designs you will ever see.
The problem is the mystery, the tension, the weirdness just builds and builds and builds and there seems to be so little relief from it. The payoff just isn't satisfying. The book gave me a headache. If you enjoy Clowes' art style, there's plenty to look at here, but story-wise, it was quite disappointing. If you're new to Daniel Clowes, I suggest trying his more accessible works first.
A failed attempt.......2005-04-22
A first glance I found this work to be engrossing, but the farther I got into the book the less sense it made. It reminded me of Charles Burns in its oddness, but then became too random and seemed more like Dada then surealism. I felt there could have been more of a tying together of the plotlines presented instead of the montage ending that left me a little more then unsatisfied. It gave a feel of "I'm tired of writting this" .
The charactors were flat compared to most of Clowes work, in truth I could not get a feel for anyone in the story. Nor did I see the big picture(if there was even one) that was presented because too little information was provided. And the any provided came across as nonsensical. It seemed like just another collection of pulp alternative work from that time. Shock value pulp at that.
I had hoped for better from one of the masters of modern comics.

Gideon's Gift by Karen Kingsbury.......2007-07-09
Gideon was an angelic little 8-year old girl with leukemia. Earl was a cranky old homeless man who didn't have a kind word for anyone he met. Fate brought this most unlikely pair together for a very special reason in a book by popular Christian fiction author, Karen Kingsbury.
A simple pair of red gloves and a little girl's genuine concern for others has created an unforgettable holiday story for all seasons. In only 148 pages, "Gideon's Gift" takes the reader on an emotional roller coaster ride that isn't really over until the very last page has been read.
This is a great "sampler" of Karen Kingsbury's writing talent.
Gideon's Gift.......2007-01-13
An excellent book depicting faith, compassion, life's true values and God's master plan. The characters are real and can be identified by all. Becoming discouraged and giving up is a tendency we all have. THis is a "can't put down" book.
Beautifully written, heartwarming story.......2006-12-26
Oh wow. I have no words to describe this story and how it touched my heart. I read the last quarter of it through tear-filled eyes.
I am going to have both of my daughter's read it because I can't think of another story that exemplifies the true spirit of Christmas as powerfully as this one does.
I'll always remember that Christmas miracles happen to those who believe. And I happen to have a pair of red gloves that were given to me by a friend that won't let me forget.
Gideon's Gift; A Novel.......2006-11-03
This book arrived in better shape than expected it to. This was my first time for ordering books from the internet and I was real impressed. It was also shipped very quickly and wrapped really good for shipping.
one of the best.......2006-01-30
I love this series...the red glove series. They are all good and they are so easy to read. Each one is a heartwarming story. I hope she does more red glove stories in the future.

Worth every penny - a beautiful book!.......2006-04-15
I am usually pleased with anything done by Interweave Press, and this book is no exception. It is beautifully done - nice photography, clear directions, short bios of the contributors, easy projects, more challenging projects....need I go on? It is printed on nice quality paper, and the book is big enough that it will lie open as you follow the directions on your needles. This book contains a lot of smaller projects that will be great to work on in the summer months (think Christmas!) when I don't want a heavy project on my lap. Some of these projects I have seen in other books, but it is nice to have them here together. A good choice for your home library.
Homespun Handknit: Caps, Socks, Mittens & Gloves.......2005-12-02
I own lots of knitting books and this one by far is the best. I do a lot of charity knitting and there are lots of patterns I use. My favorite is the knitted helmet, great for my deer hunting friends.
Each pattern describes the types of yarns used, so its easy for me to substitute a yarn. I love this book, need I say more!
Nice Patterns - Too Tricky.......2005-03-11
I have been looking high and low for knitting books that offer simple patterns. I don't consider myself a beginner knitter but I also don't feel up to knitting an Aran Sweater.. no matter how beautiful they are.
The book isn't outdated by any means and there are a lot of interesting patterns for experienced knitters but about two for a beginner.
My suggestion is to go to www.lionbrand.com and find free patterns there.
homespun happiness.......2004-11-13
If you are a handspinner of wool yarns, this book is an invaluable resource. Many patterns written for use with commercial yarns simply don't work with handspun. The patterns in this little book are classic, adaptable, and well suited to the special characteristics of hand made yarns, which tend to be less elastic and "drapey" than factory products. They also work well when knitted oversize and then felted. I refer to Homespun Handknit frequently, and the family mitten pattern is one I've made in homespun dozens of times, always with excellent results.
Worth it!.......2003-10-18
I hate buying knitting books! You spend 20 bucks on an entire book because you're in love with 1 or 2 patterns. This book was different. I did buy it for 1 or 2 patterns, but have made a bunch of them now. The patterns are not at all difficult, and are easy to vary a little with color or size so not all projects look the same. They are also pretty easily personalized.
I use this book as a way to use up my leftover yarn from other projects, and it works out great! I especially love the mushroom cap and mittens. There is a nice balance between single color patterns and multi-color patterns; easy and difficult; small needle/thin yarn and bulky with big needles. You use this if you are a beginner, and still find a challenge in it when you are experienced.
I've had to photocopy some of the pages to keep in my knitting bags because, like most knitters I usually have 4-5 projects going at once. 2 or 3 of them are from this book! Plus, I used the book so much it's getting a little worn.
Don't be hesitant to invest in this book, because the variety of patterns will keep you going back to it again and again.

TALES OF MISS BEATRIX.......2006-08-14
There's enough plotting in this book to fill three books and that is its ultimate weakness. It's a long, sometimes tedious, read but one has to give author Goddard a silver star for being able to weave all the myriad of plotting into a cohesive resolution. The plot is way too labyrinthine to go into detail here, but suffice to say it involves the murder of an elderly spinster, a dead heroic poet, a young niece trying to find out who killed her aunt; a somewhat sleazy antiques dealer and the brother accused of the murder; the young girl's brother and his promiscuous wife; an American cad; and the Spanish Civil War.
There's lots of twists and turns, and although I didn't find it one of my favorite reads, it's a well developed if somewhat lengthy read.
Spanish Civil War casts suspensenet 50 years in future.......1999-07-17
This is my fifth Goddard, and each maintains a freshly unique, suprising, suspensful character. The Spanish Civil War is an active character in the novel, and offers a valuable learning experience in itself. The theme of webs, connections and linkages continues from Goddard's other novels. All issues are finally resolved but not without unexpected twists and turns that make it difficult to put the book down.
A double ending!.......1997-03-14
The plot is well thought out. Unlike most of Goddard's books, half way through, I was sure that I fully understood what was going on and who had committed the murder. All the facts fitted my suppositions so I was a little disappointed at how easy it was to determine what was going on. Then the plot changed dramatically and all my suppositions were proved to be wrong. Red herrings galore! The final pages of the book reveal the most plausible of solutions to the scenario. As with most of RG's books, the final pages reveal a solution not thought of, but altogether too plausible. An Excellent read!

Book Description
Do you remember your first glove? Or the one that meant the most to you? Almost everyone does.
Bernie Williams does. So does Greg Maddux. Hall of Famers Dave Winfield and Jim Palmer do as well. Indeed, just above every major leaguer remembers his first glove. Some, such as Doug Rader, who won five straight Gold Gloves at third base with the Houston Astros, even wore the same glove from sandlot games all the way to the pros.
Glove Affairs: The Romance, History, and Tradition of Baseball Glove will help you recall your fist glove as it shares similar memories from the game's greats. Glove Affairs also provides informative and surprising details about the history of the glove, its evolution, and its place in American culture.
More than just an ode to the glove, however, Glove Affairs serves as a practical guide to purchasing, breaking in, maintaining, and repairing a glove. Dozens of current and former major leaguers offer their battle-tested advice about getting the most out of a glove. They also share countless stories, from the passionate to the hilarious, about the glove and their relationship to it, including their superstitions and rituals, some of which are downright bizarre.
Whether you're a little leaguer seeking tips about buying and caring for your first glove or just a little leaguer at heart hoping to revisit fond memories, Glove Affairs will educate you, illuminate you - and stir your emotions.

Going Back, Running Hard...It's a Great Catch.......2007-01-15
This is a fun book for anybody who loves baseball, and especially for those who love the feel of a baseball glove fitting just right on their hand and hearing the 'pop' of a ball as it smacks into the pocket. Liberman gives a well researched and well illustrated history of the development of baseball gloves, along with many stories and testimonials from both professionals and regular folks. He provides chapters on breaking in, maintaining, and restoring (with careful attention to a good sequence for complete re-lacing) baseball gloves. This book is a great catch, and you will be glad to have it in your hands.
Amazing Book.......2006-12-27
Christmas gift. Haven't read a really good baseball book like this in a long time. Tired of obscure histories and sappy bios. This one took me back to my own experiences on the diamond. Lots of fun.
A Glovely CASEY Award Finalist.......2004-01-16
This book received many nominations for the 2003 CASEY Award. Amazingly, it is the first book on its subject. Nominators obviously thought it is a very fun book to read and have. What will the CASEY judges think?
Brilliant!.......2003-06-05
This is a wonderful book. It's well written, has a good variety of information and is very attractive in it's presentation, plus it's "accessible" to all types of baseball fans. If you're a glove aficionado (which I am not) perhaps you'll not find all you would hope for here, but that sort of book wouldn't be anywhere near as useful. Oh, and I grew up across the street from Noah Liberman and we played lots of sandlot ball together, although I've not seen him in two decades. Reading his book makes me miss those good old days. I still have the glove I used back then but I have to admit it's got some mildew, and I know that's at least one strike against me.
Plays The Field.......2003-04-22
A well researched, written and needed book on one of baseball's fascinating subjects: the baseball glove. Liberman has touched all the bases and ... fingers on this
equipment topic.
My favorites and I'm sure many readers will find highly interesting, are the interviews with former and current major leaguers, the men who trusted and trust their living with this tool.
It's a fine catch for any baseball fan.

In her seaside cottage, Beatrix Abberley bravely confronts an intruder moments before her life is brutally taken. The crime stuns the elderly spinster’s family—especially Beatrix’s niece, Charlotte Ladram. But Charlotte has little time to mourn the loss of her beloved aunt and little patience when police quickly arrest a man Charlotte believes is innocent. For Charlotte, a harrowing quest for answers begins—one that will take her into the shadows of the past…and into the life and secrets of the dead woman’s brother, famed poet and casualty of the Spanish Civil War, Tristram Abberley.
Now, amid shattering revelations about her family, and in the aftermath of a second savage crime, Charlotte finds herself at the center of a widening storm. And for Charlotte, something extraordinary is beginning to happen. As fifty years of secrets begin to unravel, shy, cautious Charlotte is coming alive in the shadow of a mystery—uncovering a shocking tale of wartime greed and treachery, and a vendetta of violence seemingly without end….

Intriguing Literary Mystery.......2007-02-02
I have read quite a few books by this author lately and I am impressed by the way he tells a story. The plots are intricate and involved, with many unexpected twists and turns, yet at the end everything is explained in a way that leaves you satisfied as a reader. His books usually touch upon a deeper meaning and his characters are both flawed and likeable. I also enjoyed Into the Blue, Borrowed Time and In Pale Batallions.
Disappointing Final Third.......2006-12-10
Hand in Glove begins with fine writing and deft character development but the book is diminished by its plot structure. The initial tight and effective family plot falls away and the reader is left with a forced, unconvincing histrical thriller with fading characters.
Great Writing & Robert Goddard go Hand In Glove.......2006-10-04
Duplicity and intrigue run rampant through the once quiet life of Charlotte Landram. The murder of her Aunt Beatrix is only the beginning of a series of events that confronts Charlotte and places her in the "eye of a storm" that has been brewing for over 50 years.
Mr. Goddard is an expert at integrating history into this clever thriller and has produced an absorbing, plausible story that captures the imagination. He has developed a situation populated by a cast of realistic, well-defined characters so convincing they seem familiar to the reader.
Compelling from page 1, you will find this journey rewarding.
Couldn't Put This One Down! .......2006-07-09
The British Are Coming! The British Are Coming!
No, his book is not about the "War", rather it's a superb mystery/thriller brilliantly written by British author Robert Goddard.
Beatrix Abberley boldly confronts an intruder in her home and is brutally murdered. What is so bizarre about this heinous crime is that the dialogue suggests that she was actually expecting the perpetrator and she knew what he was going o do and why he was going to do it. We soon find out that weeks before her murder she asked a confidant to mail four preaddressed letters to four different individuals in the event of her death. These letters will contain the reason for her murder and will reveal who the murderer is. Charlotte Ladram, Beatrix's niece, doesn't have long to mourn the murder of her elderly aunt when she is involuntarily pulled into a tangled web of betrayal and lost loyalties. As she enlists help from a most unexpected source she discovers a twisted connection between her aunt's brutal murder and a long lost secret from the Spanish Civil War.
Hand in Glove is part mystery, part thriller, part police procedural (although Goddard convincingly finds a way to tone down the necessity of the police). The characters are wonderful. They are lively, exciting and jump right off the page. They have distinct personalities. As I read each page I felt as if I were standing right there watching all the action and listening to their dialogue. Which brings me to my second point, the dialog is fresh, natural and incredibly engaging; never stiff or boring, and the author uses it expertly to shape the characters and move the story along at a good clip. The plot is well formulated. There is something here for everyone. Every nuisance is covered, every action brings new revelation. And Goddard's research is implacable. He has given us keen insight into an interesting historical period. HAND IN GLOVE is all that you expect a thriller to be and more. Goddard masterfully proves that fiction can go beyond mere entertainment and can inform and enlighten (as well as delight) readers when written well. One caveat...towards the end of the book, as the plot begins to unravel and secrets are revealed, the events and characters get a little complex. Stay with it, all will be settled in the end.
This is a superbly written novel! I am looking forward to reading Goddard's other titles.
Enjoy.

terrific international amateur sleuth .......2006-05-07
In England elderly wealthy Beatrix Abberly greets the intruder into her home as Mr. Spicer whom she says to him that she was expecting him. She recognizes the candlestick holder he carries and uses to kill her. Her niece Charlotte grieves her loss in what seems like a robbery gone bad. The police arrest antique dealer Colin Fairfax whose motive was to steal Beatrix' priceless artifacts to sell.
Colin's brother Derek firmly believes he is innocent and plans to prove that though it means finding courage he does not possess. At the same time, Charlie also believes that the motive was not robbery; she assumes the few items purloined were to cover a more sinister crime especially after she finds letters between Beatrix and her brother, highly regarded poet Tristram who died fighting on the Republican side during the Spanish Civil War five decades ago. Charlie and Derek team up as both believe the homicide ties back to the war on the Peninsular in the late 1930s, but neither expected that they could be next.
This terrific international amateur sleuth tale grips the audience from the moment the calm Beatrix says hello to Mr. Spice and never slows down until the final believable twist. The action-packed story line works because of the lead pairing; Derek is shy and struggles to be a hero while Charlie grieves and is a bit overweight while also strains to accomplish something way out of character for her. Part of Robert Goddard's genius is to take everyday people placed in arenas outside their norm performing extraordinary but plausible deeds. HAND IN GLOVE is a superb thriller by an English grandmaster.
