Book Description
It was 40 years ago today--more or less--that a 22-year-old broadcast journalist from Florida was invited by manager Brian Epstein to travel with the Beatles to every stop on their first North American tours. The only American reporter in the official press party, Larry Kane obtained exclusive, revealing interviews with John, Paul, George, and Ringo. Fortunately, Kane saved his original notes and tapes, and shares them here for the first time. That material provides the basis for his intimate look back at the phenomenon of the Fab Four, and insights into the humor and personality of each group member. Ticket to Ride, illustrated with more than 30 photographs, captures a rare time in history, gracefully melding the story of the Beatles revolution with the changing tenor of the country. Hear John Lennon's early public criticism of the Vietnam War, and learn about the night the Beatles met Bob Dylan. "We had a crazy party the night we met [Dylan]," Paul recounts. " I thought I got the meaning to life that night." Ticket to Ride includes a 60-minute audio CD featuring rare interviews.

"Ticket to Ride" ...Yeah Yeah Yeah !.......2007-07-16
Larry Kane's "Ticket to Ride" is simply a must-read for all Beatles fan. As the only American journalist to cover every single date of both the '64 & '65 North American tours, Kane was in the eye of the storm of the hysteria of Beatlemania. The journalist developed a rapport and friendly relationship with John, Paul, George & Ringo, and his insights are invaluable.
It's fascinating to witness Kane's transformation from cynical journalist who was at first reluctanct to accept the assignment, to someone who developed an admiration and respect for the Beatles as musicians and as men.
It's a light and breezy read, and the paper-back edition is light and easy to carry. Perfect summer reading for the beach or a plane ride.
An added bonus is a CD featuring snippets of exclusive interviews Kane conducted w/ the Fab Four.
Interesting and Entertaining Just like Kane's Other Beatle Book.......2007-06-09
I really enjoyed this book. I loved the eyewitness recollections of each concert and city. I enjoyed Larry's anecdotes just like anyone who has asked him, "What was it like"? The stories on the plane were a delight, especially the revealing ones. I wonder who made that anti semetic remark anyway? I can't help thinking it was John because he was so outspoken, and I've heard he made other"jew" remarks. Who knows? Concidering Larry's catty, unfair, unwarranted, little asides about Paul McCartney, you'd almost think Paul was the one who made the remark, and maybe Larry knows this but isn't saying. There has to be some reason why Larry digs Paul throughout this book. Like other reviewers I found this book biased in Lennon's favor. I'm not begrudging his picking John as his favorite. He has excellent taste, but like his book Lennon Revealed this book puts Lennon on a pedestal and doesn't mention the others enough. Okay, for a book about John Lennon but not a book that's supposed to be about all four of them. Also people who love John the most seem to feel that this means that they need to show Paul in the worst possible light, and the Paul fans seem to always do this to John as well. Nothing is more boring and childish. We're not in 7th grade. Please grow up, Beatle writers. Jeez I love both of them equally. Why doesn't everybody else? Larry doesn't bash Paul McCartney in this book, but he never misses an opportunity to spin every event to make it look like everything Paul did had an ulterior motive. For instance, at the Capitol Records garden party the boys were expected to sit on little stools and greet over 500 guests, who shuffled past them one by one. Larry observes that while John, George and Ringo seem to be going through the motions, Paul greets each guest warmly and even finds something to say to almost all of them. (I'm not quoting from the text because I don't have the book in front of me) Then Larry somehow slants this observation to make it seem like Paul is phoney or superficial. Because my oppinion is not biased by dislike, I view this story as an example of professionalism. If Larry really knew the boys as well as he pretends to, he would have seen that all four of them were professional like this. They always went that extra mile and every obligation was carried out with enthusiasm, even if they weren't feeling that way deep down. Paul is more well known for this but all of them played the game. Another thing that Larry seems to have missed about Paul because he really does not know him very well, is that Paul is NICE. His father was NICE. His brother is NICE. The entire family has always been described by insiders as impeccably well behaved and well mannered. Paul was brought up to beleive in a work ethic and to be a team player. In fact he has said that if he didn't act this way, it would have been phoney. I'm sure if John or George were seen greeting the guests with enthusiasm Larry would have gushed about what troopers they were and how professional. In fact if Larry had portrayed George in this unfavorable light, all of the Harrison mommies and daddies would be slamming this book, and giving it one star. ( see Here There and Everywhere and Revolution in the Head) In another part of this book, where Paul is talking about his views on civil rights, Larry even has the nerve to insert words into the text that Paul never said, to try and show that he's really a racist in disguise (listen to the accompanying cd which has the actual, Paul and Larry civil rights interview to see that what he really says differs from the text.) After reading this book my feeling is that ALL FOUR of them were lovely men, with a strong sense of humanity and for twentysomething pop stars, they had an unusual amount of integrety. They were discreet in their personal lives, wonderful to their fans, and just really down to earth. This book does a fantastic job of conveying that.
Another wonderful thing are the recounting of stories by the fans who were lucky enough to either witness a concert first hand or at least were first generation fans and remember the magic first hand. I love Beatle books that do this. It's always nice to hear what other fans have to say.I gave this book five stars because I really loved everything about it. It was fun, facinating and exciting to read. I'm just not happy with Larry's snotty, catty remarks about Paul, especially since he doesn't seem to have anything to back them up. Paul doesn't deserve it. Larry is lucky to have been given the priviledge of traveling with, and getting to know The Beatles. And we are lucky that he finally wrote a memoir. Add this one to your collection.
A Great Ride Down Memory Lane.......2007-05-27
I was 16 years old when I learned about the Beatles in February, 1974. I was totally blown away, and have yet to recover. I bought, Meet The Beatles, as quickly as I could scrape up $3.00, and get to Woolworths, where the records were in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. It seemed like it was a matter of days, and the Beatles owned places 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, on the Billboard Top 100 Chart.
Then I started working on Mama to buy me my first guitar, which I still have, with 5 others. It was a $50.00 Silvertone from Sears. I constantly play the songs I heard on the 3 Ed Sullivan Shows in Febtuary, 1974.
I didn't really understand why the Beatles stopped touring when they did. Now I do since I read this book. I learned a whole lot of things that I didn't know after reading, Ticket To Ride. If you want to go from city to city with Larry Kane, Brian Epstein, the Beatles, other insiders, and the avid Beatle fans during the 1964 and 1965 tours, read this book.
I am a Christian, a rock and roller, and a serious Beatle fan. This book is written in pretty good taste, yet it gets down to the nitty-gritty of Beatlemania. Get this book!

Take a ride with the Beatles.......2007-01-17
Larry Kane is familiar to most of us in Philadelphia as one of our most well-known and loved newscasters, but before coming to our city he experienced a news story of a lifetime: traveling with The Beatles on their 1964 and 1965 concert tours of America. Working for a Miami radio station at the time, Larry takes us city by city from his first meeting with the band to their hotel rooms on the road, their chartered plane zigziagging across the county, and to Shea Stadium to witness the frenzy of Beatlemania.
The story makes for an easy, fun read, seeing the Beatles from a unique "insider-yet-outsider" perspective. Not one of the band's inner circle of managers or road crew, Larry still had an exposure to and a relationship with the band that few others enjoyed, and was entrusted to report on the band for his job while keeping some of the more scandalous sights he saw out of the public eye. Even here, he mostly leaves the sex and drugs out of the rock and roll equation, only suggesting and hinting at what may have happened (and probably did happen) behind closed doors. He obviously holds the Beatles in high respect and did not write this book to in any way diminish their reputation.
You won't find deep insight into the band members here, either, nor a great deal about their creative process. Larry's opinions of each member of the band come through quite clearly, though, especially his strong admiration for John Lennon, who comes across as easily angered yet intelligent and passionate in his convictions. Paul McCartney is the only member of the band who comes across sometimes in a less than favorable light, as Kane suggests a polished, suave, yet perhaps superficial character to "The Cute Beatle". The descriptions of fan behavior and the lengths to which fans would go to meet the band are quite interesting and revealing, at least to those of us who never experienced Beatlemania firsthand.
One weakness to the book is at times, Kane's newscaster profession takes over the writing style and the book can read like a transcript of "48 Hours" or "Dateline NBC". Most chapters end on a teaser or cliffhanger note that seems begging for someone to add, "That story after this commercial break!" The book is at times repetitive as well, as if he was stretching to fill out a page count by rehashing information. But overall, this is still a good read for any Beatles fan, or for those curious about the impact of Beatlemania on America in the 1960s.
FAV BOOK ABOUT THE FAB 4!!!.......2006-06-20
I think Larry Kane did a wonderful job on this book! I actually bought this off of amazon, and i am glad i did. He Describes the American tours so well, you can picture everything!! THis is my favorite book about the "Boys" and i am sure you will think so too!

Metallica fans.......2005-07-28
If you are learning to play drums (or play drums already) and are a big metallica fan, then you should play like Lars himself. And this is a great way for you to learn his drumming. And as many Metallica fans know this is one there best CDs so learn to play your favorite songs and have fun. I really recommend this book to any Metallica fan who wants to play the drums like Lars.
Fairly Accurate.......2005-01-09
Again, like the Master of Puppets and Kill'em All folios, the notations are fairly accurate and there aren't any noticeably major errors in this book. Note position choice is sometimes a little odd, but the notes are correct. This is an excellent book to learn a lot of the early Metallica guitar techniques, as long as you down-pick most of the rhythm parts (Creeping Death won't sound the same without it).
This book rocks........2004-03-30
I got this because I really wanted to learn the songs on Ride the Lightning that I couldn't figure out myself and the solos as well; I was surprised by how accurate the tab was for the main body of each song and on Kirk's main parts. However, there are a few problems with this book. First, for a lot of the solos you are expected to play up on the 20th fret even if you're not on one of the top two strings; this is a problem for me because I only have an acoustic guitar, I can play it fine on my friend's electric. Also, the fingerings are harder than they ought to be in places of "For Whom the Bell Tolls", "Fade to Black", and a few other songs. Last, this book is not for the average guitar player. It takes a lot of skill and speed-picking to nail those solos, all of which I haven't gotten quite yet. However, overall I definetely recommend this tab book because Metallica kicks ass!
Yet Another Review..........2003-05-30
The Ride tab book is definitely a must-buy for not only the avid Metallica muso-fan, but for those wishing to upskill themselves in various guitar techniques.
The solos are an absolute note-by-note transcription and each riff is intricately tabbed to include even the most subtle of variations.
Includes a very well-written introduction, outlining some very important and helpful tips to assist you in your mastery of one of Metllica's finest albums.
In a one-line verdict: A definite must-have, even as a collector's item!
A must for the ultimate guitarist.......2003-03-12
If you love Metallica this is one of the best books you can get. Unless you're simply amazing you're going to need this to learn all the solos.

The most recent of the Bulwer-Lytton collections;.......2001-03-20
This is the fifth of, to date, five collections of entries from the annual Bulwer-Lytton fiction contest. This is a contest, named after Sir Edward George Bulwer-Lytton, whose 1830 novel, "Paul Clifford", opened with the instant cliche, "It was a dark and stormy night...". The object of the contest is to write the opening sentence to the worst of all possible novels, generally by using impossibly complex and tangled syntax combined with vermillion-purple prose, guaranteeing that no noun is without more than its share of excessively flamboyant adjectives, no verb without more than its share of ridiculously flamboyant adverbs, and if possible including an incomprehensible or mixed (or incomprehensibly mixed) metaphor.
If you enjoy the language enough to appreciate attempts to pillory those who abuse it, and have a sense of humor such that you find satire to be an appropriate form of pillorying, you will enjoy this book (and any of the others in the series, "It Was A Dark And Stormy Night", "Son Of It Was A Dark And Stormy Night", "It Was A Dark And Stormy Night: The Final Conflict", and "Bride Of Dark And Stormy"). I found this one to be on a par with "Final Conflict", which is to say, better than the original, but not quite as good as "Son Of...". (I've yet to track down a copy of "Bride Of...", so I can't compare this one to that one.)

Who were the Remains and what happened to them?.......2002-01-14
This little book is an extraordinary chronicle of the Beatles' second tour in 1966 as told by the leader, Barry Tashian, of the opening band, The Remains. Tashian's father, anticipating the potential historical importance of the tour, sugggested he keep a journal. Tashian did that and also took photos. In the book, he builds a story line around the chronology of the concerts, presenting for each concert a photo of the city, tickets, journal entries, photographs of the musicians, fan mail and incidental information from a variety of published sources. I got the clear view of a traveling troup presented by an insider, and I could imagine what it must have been like making this trip as one of the entourage.
Barry and the Remains were unknowns to the music world, their selection for the tour being something of an accident. Tashian's journal entries tell of the group feeling themselves catapaulted into a realm beyond their abilities. During the course of the tour, he developed the closest relationship with George Harrison and began to get a glimpse of him as a real person. It would be interesting for Tashian follow up this book with the story of this experience.
The Remains had a tremendous opportunity to make it big following this tour. But instead Barry disbanded the group, believing that they were not ready for touring. Tour life is very stressful, being confronted with amazing temptations. One can only speculate what the Remains might have become if they had stayed together.
Interestingly enough, the Remains recordings are still available. And it turns out that the original band has been playing over the past two years. There is a new CD in the works.
The interested reader will have the opportunity to hear for themselves their music.
I enjoyed this book very much. It adds to the corpus of Beatles material some important details and perspective.
Nice pictures, but nothing new to add.......2001-08-11
If you are buying this book for an "insiders" view on the Beatles tour, you will be very disappointed. Mostly this is rehash of newspaper articles and fan rememberances. It is not a bad book, just rather innocuous. The most inside information shared is the brand of cigarettes George Harrison smoked. If you are a Beatle novice you will enjoy this book, but there is nothing new for long time fans.
Little to add.......2000-12-16
For someone who "ate, drank, smoked, and talked with the Beatles daily, and shared some very close personal moments with them," the author doesn't have much to say about his experiences, and what little he does have to say is superficial and unrevealing. Original material is scant: the bulk of the book consists of reprints of 1966 articles from teen magazines, redundant contemporary newspaper accounts, and (often inaccurate) fan reminiscences. I can't say there was anything substantial here I hadn't already read dozens of times before.
Fab book from the great Barry Tashian.......2000-11-04
This book is a must if you are a Beatles fan. It's also a great book about the era itself. This tour made histiry and Barry Tashian (aka Barry from Barry and the Remains) does a concise and wonderful job in telling the saga. Plus, if you haven't already, you must go buy any of the Remains albums. BRAVO!
A very good musician's account of the 1966 tour.......2000-10-09
An excellent book. To tell you the truth, before reading this book (and, believe me, I've read a lot of books about the Beatles), I didn't even know that the Beatles had opening bands on their American tours; I just assumed that the Beatles played for 30 minutes and that was the whole show. Barry Tashian's book gives a very good fellow musician's perspective on the Beatles' 1966 summer tour.
The most refreshing part of the book was learning that the Beatles (George, particularly) were quite friendly to their fellow musicians and not stand-offish. Particularly interesting is an account Tashian gives of playing a new Tim Hardin album for John and being fascinated by Lennon's musical analysis of it.

This book is an unparalleled how-to book beginners of all ages starting out with horses. It was written with young teens in mind, but its simplicity of instruction is delightfully comprehensible for adults, too. This book is about basic "horse sense," and should be in every horseman's library.

It doesn't seem like much of a mystery that Foy Willing's name should be Willing, or that his widow should be named Sharon, and that she is graciously sharing what she can of Foy in her new book No One to Cry To. Foy was so willing to offer and share much of his awareness of the many things that had been bestowed upon him and within him, not the least of which was music.
Foy Willing was, and still is, an incredible source of inspiration for those blessed, like he, to pursue an understanding of the language of music. He spent his life learning all of the componentsCall of that which is found in a song. He so understood all the intricate pieces.
This man always had room and time in his world for those who needed guidance. He was one of the most gifted talents of country and western music, while at the same time contributing in a major way to popular music, before the term "crossover" had ever been coined. Those who knew him can appreciate that, and those who never met him can now have that same opportunity. No One to Cry To makes it possible to have a more complete picture of the man who brought us some of the smoothest western sounds ever recorded.
Customer Reviews:
No one to cry to: Hard Ride into the Sunset with Foy Willing of the Riders of the Purple Sage.......2007-01-18
I was intrigued by the book as my father in-law was Al Sloey, one of the Riders of the Purple Sage. I have some tapes of telephone conversation between Al and Foy. I also have quite a little bit of other memorabilia. The spelling of LaVeta Sloey was incorrect. I purchased copies for my Son and Daughter, Al and LaVeta's grandchildren. I also have letters from Mrs. Jackson to Laveta. Very interesting book.
A Long, Hard Ride, But an Easy Read.......2006-12-12
Anyone old enough to remember the golden days of movies, radio and early television when the cowboy was king and the kings sang some of the sweetest songs in the Golden West, is going to love "No One to Cry To."
This warm, intimate biographical work by Sharon Lee Willing evokes the great Foy Willing and his "Riders of the Purple Sage" whose velvet harmony delivered such classics as "Ghost Riders in the Sky," "Tumblin' Tumbleweeds," "Cool Water" and Willing's own "No One to Cry To" from which the title is derived. When the "Riders" weren't hitting the top of the charts with their singing, they were busy riding at a wild gallop behind Roy Rogers to head the black hats off at the pass in 13 movies. In addition to all that, they sang and toured with some of the brightest stars in the entertainment firmament, including Esther Williams, Red Skelton, Howard Keel and Ann Miller.
The author knows the subject matter well. She is Willing's widow, and she tells the tale of his turbulent life, blessed by genius and cursed by the demons of drugs and alcohol, as no one else could. Even those not old enough to remember Roy, Dale and Trigger, and before them, cowboy star Monte Hall, with whom the Riders also costarred, still may find a taste in this story of what so entranced their parents and grandparents.
Certainly they will remember the songs because after half a century, they're still being played on country western stations.
There is so much in this delicious slice of nostalgia that few fans ever knew. Willing tells, for example, how Dale Evans, the wife of Roy Rogers, lifted Foy Willing's "Happy Trails," tweaked it and made it their theme song, listing herself as the composer.
Sharon Lee Willing, an agile and passionate writer, was married to Foy for 13 years, until his demons wrecked not only his health but their union. Even after they went their separate ways, however, they stayed in constant touch until his death in 1978, as evidenced by the letters they wrote to each other, which are included in the text.
The subtitle of the book is, "A Long, Hard Ride into the Sunset with Foy Willing and the Riders of the Purple Sage." Sharon Lee Willing rode a good bit the journey at his side, and her recounting of that adventure will win the hearts even of fans who may be meeting Foy for the first time. Read the book, then watch for the biopic that is bound to follow. Hollywood can no more resist this story than can Foy Willing's fans.

From Dover's Bibliographical Note: "This Dover edition, first published in 1996, is a new compilation of six scores originally published separately. B. Schott's Soehne, Mainz, originally published Der Ritt der Walkueren aus dem Musik-Drama Die Walkuere von R. Wagner/fuer Orchester zum Conzertvortrag eingerichtet, edition No. 22139, n.d.; and Trauermarsch beim Tode Siegfried's aus dem Musik-Drama Goetterdaemmerung/fuer grosses Orchester von Richard Wagner, edition No. 21998, n.d. The other scores in this compilation were originally published in early authoritative editions, n.d., including: Einzug der Goetter in Walhall (from Das Rheingold); Wotans Abschied und Feuerzauber (from Die Walkuere); Waldweben (from Siegfried); and Siegfrieds Rheinfahrt (from Goetterdaemmerung), transcribed by Engelbert Humperdinck. The Dover edition adds lists of contents and instrumentation, a glossary of German terms and English translations of four footnotes. A few errors in the scores have been corrected, including incorrect pitches in "Wotan's Farewell," p. 123, and missing accidentals throughout the timpani part of that work. We are grateful to the Duke University Music Library for the loan of several scores."
