Beginner Barbie Collector- Excellent Book! .......2007-09-05
I mainly purchased this book to remember some of my childhood toys- I wasn't expecting the detail and page after page of pictures that made me interested in collecting Barbie's as well-
This thick hardcover book has colored photos of each Barbie both in the box and then a close up of the face. The Barbies are presented in chronological order by year by doll type- so i.e. Barbie from 1950s til 90s then Skipper from 50s-90s, then Ken, etc.
The book also has friends of the infamous Barbie and Ken couple; many of which I have never seen or heard of!
If you are looking for a nice photo array and price guide of Barbie and Friends. Truly the "Ultimate" Barbie book.
Ultimate identification guide.......2007-08-08
This is the best Barbie identification book out there. It's useful to identify those thrift store and garage sale dolls and their outfits. Each item is also described with identifying marks, etc. I have owned this book since it came out and it's the one I go back to the most, for complete Barbie information.
This is a Beautiful Barbie Doll Book.......2007-07-11
I love my new Ultimate Barbie Doll Book. I still have my first Barbie Dolls from the early 60's along with Ken, Midge & Skipper. I have over 100 dolls and found them all in this wonderful book. The photos are beautiful. The Barbie novice to enthusiast will truly enjoy this book.
The Ultimate Barbie Doll Book.......2007-01-13
If you're looking for help in identifying your Barbie doll and friends then this book is for you. I collect old barbies and I have found this book to be most helpful.
Fantastic!.......2007-01-10
All models in just one big book! Buy it now! If you like barbies this is the best one!

Doll Crazy.......2007-05-07
A great reference book with great photos and descriptions to keep track of your dolls clothes and your investment.
A MUST FOR THE BARBIE DOLL COLLECTOR!!.......2006-11-10
For any serious collector of vintage Barbie doll, this book is the best resource available. I have many other books on early Barbie and her fashions, but this volume is the one that I consistently use. It is an accurate, comprehensive chronology of Barbie doll, her family and friends from 1959 through 1967. The photographs alone are worth purchasing the book. The colors are vibrant and crisp. Each fashion is pictured with all of its original components. This is of great value to the collector in putting together an outfit. I keep this book by my computer for reference when making vintage Barbie doll purchases or bidding on online auctions. I cannot imagine collecting Barbie doll items without it!
Barbie Fashion, 1959-1967.......2006-08-17
I loved this first book on the Barbie outfits. Most informative...

Book Description
Imagine Barbie as a nightclub singer, race-car driver, or presidential candidate. Picture her as a graceful ballet dancer on pointe, as a leather-clad biker babe on the back of a Harley, or as the great film icons-Audrey Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle, Judy Garland as Dorothy, Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra. In Barbie Live she is all of this and more.
Stepping into these delicious roles, Barbie acts out her fabulous dreams and aspirations, adopting a new persona on every page and having the time of her life. In spectacular designer clothing-by Bob Mackie, Vera Wang, Christian Dior, and others-she attends exciting Hollywood events and New York photo shoots. Around the world at such hot spots as St. Bart's, Paris, Malibu, and Martha's Vineyard, Barbie takes us on her quest for fame-as a rock star, as an artist, and ultimately as a movie star. But is fame and fortune all that Barbie dreamed it would be?
Nancy Ellison's gorgeous full-color photography taken expressly for this book is filled with vitality and emotion. Lisa Birnbach provides the voice of Barbie in her fun, playful text. Barbie Live is the ultimate Barbie collector's item for children and adults alike.

The Most Beautiful and Informative of All Barbie Books.......2003-01-25
This book and its companion volume, 'Barbie Doll Fashion: 1959-1967', are without doubt the most beautiful and informative books on the market for the vintage and mod era Barbie collector today. They are very well-written, with lovely photographs of absolutely pristine examples of each outfit, enough to make you drool over on every single page!
'Barbie Doll Fashion: 1968-1974' covers the fashions from Barbie's exciting Mod era, and includes fashions not only for Barbie, but for her friends and family as well. These include original outfits, Pak outfits, Best Buys, Get Ups and Gos, Store Exclusives and every other type of outfit available from 1968 to 1974.
Each outfit is described in detail, with a photograph showing the outfit and all accessories next to it, laying flat. Some outfits are shown on the doll. The photography is stunning, by far the best of any Barbie book I've ever seen.
'Barbie Doll Fashion: 1968-1974' isn't just informative, it's a catalogue of dreams to build on, and a fun book just to sit and look at. You'll never be sorry you own it!

Book Description

Since the first edition of The Barbie Doll Years, Patrick and Joyce Olds have made cataloging a collection a snap. Every Barbie doll, her friends, and their accessories are listed alphabetically by name and by year, making it possible to locate a specific doll even if you only know one of these details. Over 30,000 listings are at your fingertips, featured in a way that makes identification of one or 100 dolls easy. Cases, furniture, houses, paper dolls, childrens clothes, jewelry, games, and more are included, as well as over 100 beautiful full-color photographs of vintage Barbie dolls. To make it a complete reference, current market values based on actual selling prices throughout the country are provided. This essential guide is a must for all Barbie doll collectors and dealers.
Customer Reviews:
Barbie research.......2007-06-08
This book is exactly what it says - a comprehensive review and has an amazing amount of information. This book is perfect for those collectors who still have the doll or product with the original packaging and want an approximate value of that doll or product. The dolls/products are listed by the "title" of the product, i.e. Millenium Bride. What it does not have is alot of pictures.
If you are trying to find out what a particular doll is and/or the value - and all you have is the doll - this is not the best book for the task.
Barbie Book is a hit.......2007-03-20
I love this book, I buy the updated version everytime it comes out. Easy listings so that I can keep track of the value of my collection
Not for the average collector.......2005-06-13
I read the other reviews of this book, and it sounded like it was a good bet. What the other reviews DIDN'T say is that this book is only for those who have New In The Box items! For the average collector who finds dolls in antique malls and garage sales, this is worthless. It only prices items that are unopened in original boxes - perfect mint condition! There are no prices for any other condition level. Also there are virtually NO pictures, making it impossible to use to identify various models . Several reviewers made a big point of there being 50 pages of pictures(actually in the 5th edition it's only 29 pages, 3-6 photos per page, most are of only a single item). Only a handful of Barbies are pictured, with the rest of the pictures being other special items. So if you have one of those typical dolls found in a sale that doesn't have a box with a model number, good luck trying to figure out what you have. This book is worthless for trying to identify which Barbie you are holding, and there is no information at all in the book about identifying the knock-off copies of Barbie on the market. It is strictly a price list by year or model number, with no other information of any kind. If everything you have has boxes with model numbers, the other reviews are right - it's a good book with a VERY comprehensive listing - over 9,000 different items (see why 100 photos is no big deal?!). But if your Barbies are unidentified and in less than store shelf condition, forget it. This book is, a waste of time and money.
ONLY AN UNREAL PRICE LIST.......2002-11-10
This book has a couple of pictures in the front. And the rest are complete and extense lists (vintage & modern dolls and accesories). But the prices are usually not accurate. And to be honest there is no actual good price list to apply to the second market barbie. You pay what you want and can afford. So, it is completely useless to have this book, since 1- It only contains names (no pictures) so it is hard to identify something unless it is NRFB - (in which case you don't need to because it says what it is on the box). 2- The prices are unrealistic.
Barbie.......2001-12-06
I had a huge box of Barbies from various years. This book helped to identify them. I also recommend a fun read about dolls, Dolls Aren't Just for Kids.

Book Description
How are images of the body mediated through cultural signs? How does sexual stereotyping work? In what way are these themes bound up in modern consumerism? This book uses one of the most popular accessories of girlhood, the Barbie doll, to explain key aspects of cultural meaning.
Some readings would see Barbie as reproducing ethnicity and gender in a particularly coarse and damaging way - a cultural icon of racism and sexism. Rogers develops a broader, more challenging picture. She shows how the cultural meaning of Barbie is more ambiguous than the narrow, appearance-dominated model that is attributed to the doll. For a start, Barbie’s sexual identity is not clear-cut. Similarly her class situation is ambiguous. But all interpretations agree that, with her enormous range of lifestyle `accessories', Barbie exists to consume. Her infinitely plastic body mirrors an infinitely plastic self that resonates with postmodern notions of fluidity, multiplicity and localised meanings.
Barbie is a hugely versatile cultural icon who helps crystallize for the reader, whether researcher or student, the range and texture of core themes in contemporary society.
Customer Reviews:
Good theory, lack of support.......2003-08-22
Rogers' "Barbie Culture" is an ambitious attempt to understand how Barbie acts as an icon in American culture. Her attempt succeeds at suggesting a number of interesting theories as to how children and adults understand, interact with, and interpret Barbie. However, she fails to adequately support her ideas. Instead of providing good evidence, Rogers strings together paragraphs of quotations from other authors. She also fails to detail the theories of other authors she draws upon in creating her analysis.
Her ideas are good, but executed poorly. This book is good if you are looking for ideas to use when studying Barbie's effects on our culture, but not good for providing a detailed analysis of Barbie's position as an icon.

Book Description
From AAFES to Zeller's, this is the only book you will ever need to identify and value your retailer exclusive Barbie dolls! This book includes all retail exclusives since 1972, when Montgomery Ward issued their own 'original Barbie' on the occasion of their 100th anniversary. As of 2004 over 90 retailers have sold a Barbie exclusive at one time. This exhaustive book includes all of those retailers and their treasures, and many dolls feature close-ups for ease in identification. Over 500 dolls not shown in previous editions have been added to this volume, along with 60 new fashions. Fans of Barbie doll's little sister Kelly will be delighted to learn that over 100 Kelly dolls have been added, making this a great Kelly reference as well. Some of the latest retailers to join the exclusives bandwagon include Big Lots, Dollar General, Hard Rock Cafe, Mary Kay Cosmetics, the Mattel Store, See's Candies, and Walgreen's. It's author Augustyniak's best work yet.

Excellent Reference Book for Modern Barbie Doll Collectors.
Barbie collector book.......2007-04-11
What an excellent resource. We had three generations reading every page about their favorite Barbies and we all learned so much.
Collector's Encyclopedia Of Barbie Doll Exclusives: Identification & Values 1972-2004 .......2007-01-16
The Collector's Encyclopedia Of Barbie Doll Exclusives is a great reference to the value of different types of Barbies. I was a little dissapointed that the Holiday Barbies and Bob Mackie Barbies are not listed in the book but I was pleased, otherwise. I would recommend this book.
Collector's Encyp. of Barbie Doll Exclusivies/1972-2004.......2006-07-20
Having read the other collector's encyclopedia's written by this author, this one is also a beautiful collection of the Barbie doll's one may want to know about and/or collect. The pictures are well done and the descriptions very clear and understandable. At a book store, before even my first purchase of these books, I skimmed other books stating they had what I was looking for, but none compared to Michael J. Augustyniak's. Through his books, I have been able to purchase Barbies at what I know is a fair and good price for my own collection. Very good resource book. Highly recommended.

Book Description
Since Barbie's introduction in 1959, her impact on baby boomers has been revolutionary. Far from being a toy designed by men to enslave women, she was a toy invented by women to teach women what-- for better or worse-- was expected of them. In telling Barbie's fascinating story, cultural critic and investigative journalist M. G. Lord, herself a first-generation Barbie owner, has written a provocative, zany, occasionally shocking book that will change how you look at the doll and the world.
Customer Reviews:
A very good book for a rainy day.......2006-05-16
I know you think I am a little young for this book but trust me it's great! It's so good! I never looked at a Barbie the same way again! This is a must-have for Barbie fans! I like how she talked about how Barbie made African-Americans and American-Asians feel undermined what with not a lot of ethnic Barbies being sold now. I loved loved hearing about the collector things and the weird people who think Barbie is the most fabulous thing ever. She also covers feminism, society's messages towards women, anorexic stars, and rituals that seem to be incorporated into Barbie play. And she gives some neat background dirt on Mattel. He, he!
I did not like how she said the pregnant Midge doll was "icky". This book is cool with lots of photos and stories of interesting people and disturbing artists as well as the acessories made to make up for Ken's groin loss (lol) and the secret messages implanted in Barbie's accessories. I will never see Barbie as a cheap piece of skinny plastic anymore. Now, she is society in doll form. Believe it!
Wamina!
Impressively skewed........2005-09-30
On the one hand, this is an impressively researched book written with humor and intelligence. I'd love to see a new edition tracking some of the more recent developments in Barbie's empire. But some of Ms. Lord's arguments drift unpersuasively far into psycho-sexual realms. When she used an obscure 43 minute 1987 documentary as her three-page focus for the conflicting causes of eating disorders, she completely lost me.
Great book!.......2004-05-20
This book isn't the next _war and peace_ nor was meant to be. Just like that dude J. Alfred Prufrock, it's good for swelling a crowd, and giving you something less-embarassing than watch television to do when you want to just relax. Analyzing pop culture, learning obscure facts about something I am vaguely ashamed of myself for being interested in in the first place . . . mmmmmmmm, pass the oreo ice cream, please. The author definitely shares my sheepish fascination with Barbie. His/her(?) text explores many aspects of our relationship with Barbie - as children, parents, adult women, queers, artists, etc., as well as a lot of very interesting background info on how she was created, the company who has promoted her over the years, and the toy industry in general. Holding my interest *without* getting so serious that I wished the book had come with a discussion section that met once a week, _Forever Barbie_ was like a long, interesting cultural-analysis chat with an amusing girlfriend. I would read it again in a few years or recommend it to friends . . .
I love it! Too bad itýs out of print.......2001-12-25
This is not a "pro-Barbie" book, or an "anti-Barbie" book. It is an exploration of all aspects of Barbie the author finds significant. Topics include:
The history of Barbie's creation, her marketing and engineering by Mattel.
The differences between male and female executives in handling of the Barbie line.
Ruth Handler, Barbie's creator, and other prominent women in Barbie's life such as Charlotte Johnson, who designed her clothes in the early years, Judy Shackelford, Mattel's first female vice president, and Jill Barad, the marketing director & later Mattel COO, who pioneered the "We Girls Can Do Anything" advertising campaign in 1984.
A history of Barbie and ethnic identity (unfortunately someone had clipped pages out of this chapter in the library copy I read, so I can't say too much about it.)
Explorations of symbolic, sexual, & psychological meanings of the doll.
I found this book fascinating. A very enjoyable read. While it explores both the positive and negative views women have had of Barbie, I especially enjoyed the positive, including Barbie's history as a single independent career woman, the powerful career women involved in her creation, manufacture, & marketing over the years, and the somewhat fanciful but enjoyable discussion of her as a mythical archetype of the feminine.
I like when this book ventures into realms of the bizarre, like the exploration of Barbie's image in the context of fetishism and pornography. I suppose some people might be disturbed or offended by this, however.
I was frustrated by the lack of a list of illustrations, since photographs appear throughout the text, & are often mentioned later in the book. It's hard to go back and find the picture she's talking about.
I was confused by the author `s seeming lack of awareness that people might read the book 6 or more years after its publication. For instance, she refers to women of the Barbie generation as "women under 40." I had to think to realize this included me, since I'm not under 40 now, but I was when the book was published in 1994. The confusion will increase as years go by.
This is too bad, since the book is a unique treatment of Barbie in cultural context, and should be read well into the future by students of popular culture as well as individuals who like to ponder such things. Unfortunately, it's out of print. This makes it unlikely that a 2nd edition will ever appear, which is also too bad, since I would love to know what the author has to say about innovations subsequent to its publication, such as Barbie's new more lifelike proportions, and the introduction of her belly-button.
Some people might find this book too intellectual, or possibly over their heads. Probably many people who like to ponder the meanings of popular culture are anti-Barbie, and might be turned off by the book's positive spin on the doll. Barbie enthusiasts might be put off by the negative spin, as well as the stranger explorations. I love the book, but I have to admit it's not for everybody. Maybe that's why it's out of print. But if you are open to both sides of the Barbie controversy, and like to wax philosophical and think about things, this book is definitely for you.

Book Description
"Barbie Zelizer provides enormous service to students and scholars with this comprehensive and highly persuasive critique of the literature in and about journalism as both process and practice, as a profession and an industry. Zelizer takes a step back to look at what we know about news, and she does not pull her punches in pointing out what we do not know."
-Linda Steiner, Rutgers University
"Zelizer's encyclopedic review of scholarly studies of journalism fills an important need for researchers, and comparing that scholarship across disciplines, generations and countries makes it even more valuable. . . Her analyses will be invaluable for media research and should also spur interest in journalism among the social science and other disciplines she studied. . .The book is an impressive achievement."
-Herbert J. Gans, Columbia University and author of Democracy and the News
"
Taking Journalism Seriously is a refulgent analysis of the condition of journalism studies. Zelizer has produced a critical and lasting contribution to our understanding of the position of news, journalism and journalism practice within the disciplines of political science, sociology, psychology, philosophy, language and cultural studies. This excellent book is an engaging and sophisticated treatise on both the historical and contemporary theoretical perspectives of journalism scholarship."
-Howard Tumber, City University, London
How have scholars tended to conceptualize news, newsmaking, journalism, journalists, and the news media? Which explanatory frames have they used to explore journalistic practice? From which fields of inquiry have they borrowed in shaping their assumptions about how journalism works? In
Taking Journalism Seriously: News and the Academy, author Barbie Zelizer discusses questions about the viability of the field of journalism scholarship and examines journalism as a discipline, a profession, a practice, and a cultural phenomenon.
Taking Journalism Seriously argues that scholars have remained too entrenched within their own disciplinary areas resulting in isolated bodies of scholarship. This is the first book to critically survey journalism scholarship in one volume and organize it by disparate fields. The book reviews existing journalism research in such diverse fields as sociology, history, language studies, political science, and cultural analysis and dissects the most prevalent and understated research in each discipline.
The author provides a critical mapping of the field of journalism studies and encourages academics to look at journalism from various disciplinary perspectives.
Taking Journalism Seriously advocates a realignment of the ways in which journalism has traditionally been conceptualized and urges scholars to think anew about what journalism is as well as reflect on why they see it as they do.
Taking Journalism Seriously is designed for undergraduate and graduate students in advanced courses on Journalism and Journalism Studies. It will also be of interest to scholars, academics, and researchers in the fields of Journalism, Communication, Media Studies, Sociology, and Cultural Studies.

A more than thorough exploration of the media.......2004-08-13
Any individual expressing interest in the study of the media, be it a professor or a student, MUST read this book. Zelizer's analysis of the way in which media is viewed is not only so accurately examined but also incredibly thought provoking.

Customer Reviews:
Great toy that holds my daughter's interest.......2007-08-08
We take lots of car trips, and this kept my daughter entertained endlessly this trip. She asked for it over and over and you could hear her creating new stories with the dolls and the different scene boards that come with it. It all fits nicely in a carrying case which makes it great for taking places. Sure, the parts are small and you may lose a few, but it comes with so many accessories for the two Barbie "dolls" that you won't miss the ones you may happen to lose. Great buy for the money and allowed TV-free play time in the car, at home, at church, doctor's office, etc.
Nice compact magnetic dress up set.......2007-05-27
Actual Barbie dolls were never a favorite with our girls, until this magnetic playset was given to them! They now love playing dress up with the two cut out figures, complete with wigs, dresses, shirts, skirts, even accessories like boots and purses. The storage case is thin and closes perfectly with all the pieces inside, has a convenient carry handle, and can even be put on a book shelf when not used. The interchangeable scenes are cute, from beach to city, and the outfits coordinate with each theme perfectly. My only criticism is that some of the accessories are so super-tiny, even smaller than a toddler's finger nail, and they very easily get misplaced. Otherwise this is a fun and entertaining set for kids age 4 and over.
Great Idea.......2007-01-13
Provides many hours of entertainment - great for in the car or for taking to Grandma's.
Good Buy - Keeps Interest - Fun.......2006-05-13
I purchased this for my 3 yr old daughter. I like it because it not only helps with her dexterity (some of the pieces are small)and understanding coordinating colors, but it also keeps her entertained by herself so I can make dinner, clean, etc. There are lots of magnetic pieces, some smaller than others, like the accessories. My daughter is very careful and gentle with her toys, keeping them in one place and organized, she is quite meticulous. If your child is not, I can see pieces getting tossed all over the place and getting lost, b/c they're small. Although, both the front and back inside the book are fully magnetic to store them. The "notebook" that comes with it is too young for a 3 yr old, as it talks about fashion tips she doesn't quite understand yet, but she has fun looking at the photos and I read it anyway. Overall, I think it's a great buy and my daugher enjoys it and plays with it everyday.
