5 out of 5 stars Awesome even for a 54 year-old.......2007-09-25

When I first got this book, I thought, "Oh, these styles are all too young for me! I like "The Pocket Stylist: Behind-the-Scenes Expertise from a Fashion Pro on Creating Your Own Look", which came last week, a lot better!"

However, after getting farther along in the book, I realized that this book is also WONDERFUL, and meets a very specific need incredibly well! The little notes on the examples are quick & easy to read & make the authors points extremely clear. Furthermore, I can show the pictures to my teens and even THEY can "get it"! My 19-year-old, even though she is an avid reader, said that she likes this book a lot because she is a "visual learner".

One of my kids has fashion sense oozing out her little finger. But for the rest of us, who just don't "see" what born stylists see, this book is great! It is well worth the money, considering that it has 1,500 full color photos, every page is packed with info, & there are no distracting ads!

Now I just wish they'd do a book for men that I can show my husband & sons!

4 out of 5 stars Great ideas and layout.......2007-08-24

Love lucky magazine so knew I would love this too. I had bought an number of other "fashion" books including Stacy and Clinton Kelly's book and the Pocket Stylist and Budget Fashionista. Each of these has a different approach to dealing with the issue of how to dress well. I do like the Lucky Shopping Maual the best because being a visual person, I like to see the actual clothes and their combinations and although some of the other books do this they dont' do it as extensively as Lucky does. My only complaint is this. I loved almost all the clothes they featured and would love to have bought them or at least known the designers but they did not source them--they do have a list of stores in the index by state that presumably carry the clothes but that's it. Having said that--I do use the book almost daily to get dressed in a more interesting and coordinated way than I have before--I haven;t taken the book shopping with me yet but plan on doing so to help me fill in the gaps that I have in my wardrobe. It is very user friendly and packed with a ton of ideas and very well layed out. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Style & Depth.......2007-08-06

The Lucky shopping manual is designed for people who are serious about building a solid wardrobe or upgrading the one they currently have. Each chapter has a RANGE of skirts, tops, pants, shoes, handbags etc in combinations that are stylish and timeless.

The book doesn't cater to "one" particular style. It is multi-dimensional and covers a range of styles from conservative to trendy or casual to "all dolled up". There really is something here for everyone including what to wear for your body type.

The book takes you through all four seasons and with a solid foundation to build upon. It is a lot to digest and you won't get through it in one sitting. That's the beauty of it. You can take a little at a time and keep coming back for more. The book includes color photos, illustrations, shopping rules, how to clean certain fabrics, and a directory of stores around the country. Great Buy! Great Price!

A Great compliment to this book would be The Budget Fashionist by Kathryn Finney. The Lucky Manual teaches you how to dress. The Budget Fashionista tells you how to do it on a dime!

5 out of 5 stars excellent illustration for ideas.......2007-07-12

this book is really great for old & new ideas on how to put pieces together. the what to pack section in the back for various trips is also excellent, my friends & i have used it for business trips & vacations, and it worked out great! i plan to use the shopping index in my future travels.

i think if you get this book, plus pocket stylist, and to a certain extent instyle instant style(too many celebrity pics), you're pretty much set!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent resource book.......2004-02-02

A comprehensive, user-friendly guide to the skills and techniques for measuring garments and creating spec sheets. It's an excellent resource book which provides the fundamentals for building, developing, streamlining your flats and specs library. It's a neat and concise reference book you would find so useful that would like to own and keep at hand at all times. Furthermore, the enclosed CD-ROM makes it even more versatile for it offers you the possibility to save, send, print, alter (and carry!) all the information. I find it extremely helpful.

This book is great for anyone new at drawing flats and specs, or if you have been in the industry for years, it is a great brush up. I have also taken a class by one of the authors and she made flats easy...just the way the book does it!

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Never out of date.......2007-03-08

I have owned this book for years and I absolutely love it. My daughter has read it, and I have given a few to friends as gifts. What fun. I enjoy the fact that I am relatively intelligent. But, I love being girlie. I love perfume, make-up, lingerie, all of it. Bombshells are not stick thin waifs who don't eat. Real bombshells are real women with appetites and curves. Bombshells refered to in the book are Sophia Loren, Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor, to name a few. Women who look like women, not women who look like little boys.
Perfume and make up are wonderful things. This book mentions classic fragrances. Chanel Number 5 will be around long after I am gone. It also mentions the classic fragrance of Tabu. Which I adore. It's sets me back all of eight dollars, and I get so many compliments on it that I have to laugh.
After reading this book probably 60 times in the last few years it just keeps reminding me that there is nothing wrong with being a bombshell. Bombshell is a state of mind. And while I think women's lib is a good thing, I have to admit, I LOVE having males open doors for me. I love having a man offer me his arm when I am walking in heels on ice. I love having a man offer me his hand when I step out of the car. I have reached the conclusion that a lot of men like women who look like women. I think secretly, men like women to wear dresses and look pretty.
Mostly, tho, a bombshell is sincere and caring in her heart. A bombshell cares about others. Most importantly, at the end of the book there is mention of how a bombshell leans in to listen to the person she is speaking too. That may be called a "bomshell-ism", but, in reality it is just good manners. I couldn't imagine a bomshell talking to someone while looking over their head to see what else is going on in the room. I'm thankful I was a self-made bombshell before the book. Reading the book keeps me on my toes. And I am thankful that my daughters are also bombshells. Because in my mind bombshells are women who are comfortable with being women, and who also have some manners.

      5 out of 5 stars Bombshell here I come!.......2006-11-10

Ok, I was a bomb shell to begin with but its nice that other people understand that too! This book is so funny and enlighting that I could not put it down and had it read in the first night! This book allows us to bring out the hidden bombshell!

This is a must read.... again and again!

      4 out of 5 stars Bombshell Anthropology.......2006-06-10

Isn't it always the case that what some readers hate about a book is what you love about it? I love the focus solely on vintage movie stars, perfume, music etc. I love the way it reads like a movie magazine of the era, full of fluff and fun and nothing too sad or intrusive. I love the way the author seems to be making a study of bombshells in their native habitat, the movie screen and the Hollywood of yesteryear. I love that although it's so over the top you may sense a hint of things being "tongue in cheek," she passes no judgments about the bombshell way of life.

I love the fact that it is not a how-to book which I find have a tendency to sound rather "Do this or you aren't beautiful/strong/hip/chic/accomplished etc." You can take what you will from this book. Read it to see a light and fun side to bombshells whose lives are usually mentioned in junction with tragedy now. Read it to see some suggestions as to what music a bombshell listens to and what mood it sets, what movies she loves and what books she reads (and why). Maybe you'll want to add some bombshell touches to your life or maybe you won't, either way it's a fun read.

Personally I pick it up to cast a rose glow over my life, to add some effervescence and to recapture a sense of fun. To me, that's what makes this book sparkle, it is a slice of a cotton candy world. It's a rose-tinted bygone Hollywood that you can stroll through and pick up a few trinkets to adorn your reality, or not.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Bombshells .......2006-04-09

This is a great book. It's not a good book if you're looking for a guide to dress like Lindsey Lohan or how to put together a work appropriate wardrobe. It's a fun and funny book about the concept of the bombshell. The concept that started with Marilyn, Sophia and Kim, and continues today in some of the sexier and smarter women out there. Being an old movie buff certainly helps in the appreciation of this guide. If you can't stand black and white movies, and think that Marilyn was fat and over-rated, do not bother.

      5 out of 5 stars a must own .......2006-03-13

this book is delightful and inspiring. it's definitely a light read, and shouldnt be viewed as a "guide" or "how to" book. it's more an homage to women who are strong and independent enough to embrace their femininity, sometimes to the point of hillarity. i have been giving it as a gift to fabulous women i know for four years, and it's always adored. i recommend reading it in a bubble bath...

At once a practical style guide and a charming homage to one of the most popular destinations in the world, this colorful volume reveals the elusive secrets of Parisian chic.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars more entertaining than useful.......2007-05-17

This book was published the same year that I lived in Paris. I like it for sentimental reasons, it gives you a picture of the street fashion that year. One of the outfits in the book is identical to the favorite outfit of one of my french friends at the time. However, this book is now outdated and I agree whith J. Whithford that Elegance by Madame Dariaux is a far better book.

      3 out of 5 stars Outdated.......2007-05-12

As someone who has been to Paris many times and has many Parisian friends I find this book to be stuffy and out of date. Yes, true, there are still many women in Paris who dress in the "old school" way but the average woman on the streets in no way represents what these women are trying to sell. However, they do give some interesting advice that is classic and can be used and adapted for wherever you live or travel.

2 out of 5 stars Snobbish shop owners name brands.......2006-11-03

I was very disappointed in this book. Mostly the mother-daughter team, who own a costume jewelry shop, tells you to buy expensive French brands you already knew about. The book is about half photographs of them wearing classic clothes that don't look particularly French---cream, khaki, navy and other neutrals. Very tasteful, and stylish in a quiet way, but nothing specifically French. Maybe that's the point. Entre Nous by Debra Ollivier was vastly more useful in understanding what makes french woemn seem more stylish. She is an American who lived in Paris for a decade married to a Frenchman.

5 out of 5 stars Much Better Than French Chic!!!.......2006-07-15

I have "French Chic" by Susan Sommers also, and this book book by Veronique & Virginie Morana is more contemporary in my opinion. "The Parisian Woman's Guide To Style" is not written by an American in Paris, like Sommers. It was written in 1999 by two French natives who own a boutique in Paris. Although 6 years old, the pictures still look current in their simplicity. The authors have managed to capture classic French elegance without looking stodgy or outdated. Their basic wardrobe elemants and accessories apply whether your lifestyle is working mom, a college girl seeking to upgrade her image or even a socialite. There are some interesting beauty and style tips. The back of the book lists boutiques to check out when you're visiting France (if they're still there.) There are many great color photos as examples. The drawback is that all the recommended items are expensive and French-made, which isn't realistic for a woman on a budget. However, you can use this a guide to selecting and combining the best wardrobe pieces within your own budget when you visit department stores. You can always find good quality knock-offs.

      1 out of 5 stars I agree with J. Whitford, it's not worth getting.......2006-07-05

I bought this book, and several others in the whole french chic genre.

I agree Frederik Fekkai's book, A Year of Style, and Genevieve a Darieaux's book are supreme.

So is Things a Woman Should Know about Style by Karen Homer.

Leah Feldon's advice on dressing rich and dressing thin is along these lines and really good value if you are trying to create a core or capsule wardrobe along french chic lines. Which translated simply stands for quietly elegant.

Anne Barones 3 Chic and Slim books are terrific, available on her website, so you needn't pay the inflated prices on the web but they are definitely worth every penny. Google her name and the title, and the site should appear.

Finally Entre Nous was a great book discussing a lot of different aspects of french life including the diet, wardrobe, manners etc.

This book in comparison comes up WAY short. The pictures are outdated already, which wouldn't be such a problem if the text had anything of value to say.

The classic perfume list was interesting, as were the bits on what goes into the basics of a wardrobe

but you can figure that out using Karen Homers tiny but terrific little book Things a Woman Should Know about Style (which is a terrific companion to Genevieve a Dariaux's A Guide to Elegance-- it updates Genevieve quite nicely).

all in all I'd say hang onto your money, and buy:

Anne Barone's 3 Chic and Slim books,

Things a Woman Should Know about Style by Karen Homer and

Genevieve a Dariaux's A Guide to Elegance along with

Frederic Fekkai: a Year of Style (out of print now, but worth getting!) and

Does This Make Me Look Fat?: the Definitive Rules for Dressing Thin for Every Height, Size, and Shape by Leah Feldon

Leah has good advice on shopping for quality, and if you want more, she has an out of print one that dates back 20 years that still has good advice in it.

as well as Entre Nous by Debra Olliver.

That little "bookshelf" will net you a thousand times better advice on learning grace, style and chic than this little photo essay book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and clear.......2007-05-22

This book is beautifully presented and laid out and printed on quality paper. Most of the chapters have exercises with step-by-step instructions which are clearly presented and illustrated. The actual image files used in the book are available for download on the author's website and are used in the exercises. What you'll learn isn't just applicable to photographing women, but very useful for editing photos in general and for getting to grips with Photoshop. The next best thing to having a live teacher.

      5 out of 5 stars A must have.......2007-03-23

This book is a must have for professional and who want to edit in Photoshop like one. I can say that this is the best book.

4 out of 5 stars Good Photoshop book.......2006-08-11

A possibly better title would be "The Art of Retouching Women" as this book concentrates on the use of Photoshop to fix photographs that need drastic correction rather than the actual photography of women. Even so, it's Kelby's usual entertaining beginner Photoshop book with lots of cool graphics and tips that work, even if they are sometimes convoluted. If the photographs you take of women could use some repair and retouching, this book offers lots of good advice.

      1 out of 5 stars Very amusing.........2006-08-08

Well, this book is worth owning for amusement value. While there are some overly complex methods of achieving a result that works, most of the information is simply beginner jargon. How to make a girl into a barbie chapter is simply a must see for laughs.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellant Book.......2006-02-25

A great learning tool. Easy to follow directions, well illustrated and clearly written.

      Book Description

"I can think of no recent book about traditional crafts which has delighted me more than Joel Monture's Complete Guide to Traditional Native American Beadwork. All too often, books of this nature are either as boring as a repair manual, or obscure and inaccurate. Monture's triumph is that his book is not only the best and most complete book about virtually every aspect of Native American beadwork tools, materials, styles and methods, it is also clear, interesting reading. Written from the point of view of a Native master craftsman who is also a gifted teacher, and accompanied by striking full-color photos, it can serve as either a beginning point or a lifelong reference tool. I am confident that Monture's book will bring him wide praise, not only from beadworkers, but also from any person who delights in knowing more about the meaning and the history of an indigenous artform which is finally attracting the sort of critical attention and informed appreciation it deserves."

4 out of 5 stars Native American Beadwork & more!.......2006-03-16

This is a great book for those looking for authentic beadwork styles. The author covers a broad range of styles. He also discusses different backgrounds and even provides instruction for hide tanning.

5 out of 5 stars Preserving tribal styles and techniques.......2004-09-18

The author, Joel Monture, is a professor of traditional arts at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe. His thorough textbook documents not only native American beadwork techniques, but the tedious methods of leather preparation that are necessary prior to beading.

A San Antonio local artisan, Ken Yanez, is familiar with this process of scraping, lacing and brain-tanning leather. Ken befriended a native American while in the Marines and accompanied him home to the reservation during military leaves. There, an elder showed Ken some magnificent, old beadwork. Ken was surprised to learn that the tribal youth showed little interest, including his friend. Although Ken doesn't have sufficient native American ancestry to qualify for tribal membership, he made a personal commitment to learn these techniques. Ken's projects are authentically produced but cannot be labeled as "Indian made."

Why don't tribal youth show more interest in native American craft? Preparation for beading in the native American tradition, such as brain-tanning of hides, is labor intensive, although the results are buttery-soft, making the leather pliable for decorative beading and quilling. Because of the work and time involved, few of today's tribal youth want to perpetuate the craft. "Time" has become "money," so if there is interest in doing crafts in the classical tradition, it's to make some money. Ken will attest to the amount of time it took to make a cradle board for his son. He certainly couldn't sell it for a price to equal the months that he put into the project.

To offset the lack of interest in fine craft, author Joel Monture has captured the steps needed to recreate the obvious beauty inherent in native American beadwork. The book features 43 color plates of beadwork, including the styles of many North American tribes.

In one respect, Joel is preserving an anthropological record of the personal ornamentation used by various tribes by showing us the differences and similarities of style. To lose these tribal identifiers results in cultural homogeny and a disconnect with our human history. Joel's sense of history has led him to capture these artistic techniques before they are lost.

      3 out of 5 stars It's worth looking at........2004-07-15

I just got this book along with two others the other night. Haven't had the chance yet to read it completely yet. Having scanned it a bit though, I would say the section with color photos is good, particularly if you're a crafter looking for patterns. The text I've read up to this point is good and worth reading. I've had a little bit of a hard time with some of the diagarms though, particularly some of the ones dealing with hides and hide tanning. Not that I'm looking to tan hides right now, but I thought it would still be interesting to understand the process. Several of the stitch diagrams are easier to follow though. There are black and white photos as well in this book. Most came out fine, but I think a there are a few that must have had poor lighting.

      5 out of 5 stars beautiful book.......2003-03-31

i love indian art, traditional and contemporary. i have a small collection of northwest and inuit art. i have studied the histories of several nations. but i am not an indian. no matter how much study i may devote to indian arts and history, i will never be an indian, i will never have the intimate knowledge that comes from growing up in a culture. i would never presume to tell any member of any indian nation that his or her work was not 'traditional.'

and what, exactly, is tradtional? louise keyser, a washoe who died in 1925, created a new form of basket in the 1890s that was based on her tradition and her knowledge of other nations' traditions. this is what artists do--take what they know, build on it, and create new forms. after all, indians happily absorbed european beads into their 'traditions.'

i design my own knits, embroideries and beadwork. this book offers stunning photos and a good section on traditional color use which together give me a good starting point for my own creations and which is why i rate this book at five stars.

note on nomenclature: the indians i have known were not concerned about indian/native american. i object to native american since the indians migrated (IMmigrated) here just as everyone else has, albeit a few thousand years earlier. if i have offended any indian/native american by this use, i apologize. if a european doesn't like it, well....

4 out of 5 stars Native Beadwork from a Native perspective.......2003-02-05

How interesting that the beadwork book chosen as more "authentic" by some here was written by a European from Germany! Mr. Monture is Six Nations (Mohawk, I believe) from New York State, & has taught Native Arts at the American Indian Arts Institute (a college *for* Native artists) for some years.

Again, its more about where you're from. Some could say it is 'romantized', as it doesn't go into how much work it actually is to produce hides, that its smelly, you need a lot of guidance & practice, etc.

Different tribes use different techniques, & this book is definitely written from a more northeastern tradition, perhaps difficult to appreciate as it is less known outside these communities. (Plains beadwork is usually what the mainstream usually recognizes as 'authentic'.)

That said, one probably needs a little background to get the most from this book. I do wish there was more discussion on color use and Great Lakes pattern development, but these are also skills which are best honed by doing. I enjoyed this book, which does pack a lot of information into relatively little space. The construction techniques are excellent!

Reads like a magazine ad for their products, although it is a step by step procedure using their products to creat one heck of a mask.

4 out of 5 stars Nice quality product.......2007-02-19

I only had two qualms with this product and neither of them are really bad things at all:

      1) I wish ALL of the pictures were color, especially in the painting section, but that would have probably made this book prohibitively expensive.

      2) I didn't realise you got this book free when you made a purchase from their website (one of their mask making kits). Still it was a great read and a nice price.

3 out of 5 stars OK as a starter book.......2007-02-16

The book does a good job of showing you how to create a single mask type, using a real sized bust(armature) and clay to create a sculpture. All of the basic steps are covered, from the initial sculpture, making a mold, to casting the final mask and using an air brush to paint the design.

However, I would have liked to see the book cover different techniques for creating masks. May times, just one approach doesn't work for everything.

The book is also a bit light, with 41 pages of usable information.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT Monster Mask How To Book.......2006-04-27

      This is a great book.
I have had this book for a while, and would not trade it for anything. For clear, detailed, step by step instructions and techniques on how to mold, cast, & paint a, latex, full head mask, this IS the book for you. A good reference for the advanced artist, and a good starting point for the beginner.(***not really for little kids making halloween masks, more for older kids, and adults interested in special effects makeup and masks) The book details all of the materials used and needed, which are avail at Monster Makers, outstanding, store.
Arnold, and the people at Monster Makers are great, and they really know their stuff, real indusrty professionals...NO I don't work for them, its just true; I have, however, worked in the "effects" field for over 20 years.
This is a great book and I highly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars the prettiest book in the store.......2007-02-21

If you are an artist, a designer or an illustrator, you should check out this book to marvel at how it is laid out. I didn't find the reading enjoyable or helpful, but the illustration and design of this book is virtually a how-to manual for any designer trying make a dry book sizzle.

      2 out of 5 stars self promotion-not style advice.......2007-01-21

In this book, the author seemed to feel the need to promote herself rather give great advice. It was amazing how in every single chapter she found a way to toot her own horn and just added tidbits of ideas around stories of her grandness. While she has certainly had an interesting life, I felt that the main focus of the book was more on her experiences and successes than offering what the book promises. The whole book can be summed up in the writing of the About The Author section. Too much bragging- not enough practical advice.

1 out of 5 stars Never judge a book by its cover!.......2006-11-27

      What I learned today:

Never judge a book by its cover!

On a recent shopping trip to Target, where I picked up tons of decorating stuff for my first own apartment, I came across this book, thought it sounded good and the drawings really looked cute, too.

I quickly realized what a mistake and total waste of money it was!

I was hoping for helpfully advice in decorating my place, dah...isn't that what the cover promises?
After having to read how great the authors live is over and over, I got incredible frustrated by the lack of any kind of helpful advice, any kind! This book has absolutely nothing in it - nothing!

The author tells us to go watch movies, walk around in our neighborhood, copy the style of our friends, write down our ideas in a journal, and keep a file of catalog pages and such. Oh and if you get creative at night you are allowed to get up in the wee hours and work around the house, no, I am not kidding, I wish I were...

This book is such a joke, I wish I had saved my money.
I can't return it now because I took one of the style quizzes with ink pen, for which nowhere in the book are any answers by the way, not that I even care about it anymore now...

Run as far as you can from that FLOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Thanks for nothing, Susie........2006-11-11

I am living alone for the first time, and have been having a hard time combing through my eclectic tastes and translating them into focused ideas suitable for furnishing and decorating my livingroom. I thought "A Get-Inspired Guide to [My] Creative Side" was just what I needed. I was even willing to overlook the tired "Diva" in the title. What a joke.

Ms. Coelho's advice to someone like me?: Choose a focus! Make a decision! Hello, duh? The basic message of the book is pay attention to what works and what you like about whatever you see, in whatever context (her ingenius suggestions: Watch a movie! Go shopping! Look at your friends! Get inspired by nature!), and write down your ideas when you have them. How is this new or helpful advice?

When she isn't stating the obvious, she's name-dropping and telling stories about how great she is and how great her life is. Boring. Useless. Pass on this one.

      1 out of 5 stars Worthless junk!.......2006-10-26

Zero stars - but unfortunately that was not an option.

I recently got married and now live with my husband in a lovely 2,600sf townhouse with 9' ceilings; windows overlooking a small backyard; a galley-style kitchen; and a fireplace which sits at an angle to the room. Aside from how to deal with those things I was looking for general advice on fabrics, lighting, flooring, walls, etc.

What I got with this book is absolutely zero, nothing, nada; there is not one single helpful advice in it.
If there is, or someone has any ideas or recommendations, can you please point those out to me - thanks.

True, it tells you to keep your space clutter free, like a Mom telling her 3 year old to tidy her room. Aside from that I am supposed to look around, figure it out on my own, oh and whenever I get an idea I write it down in a journal.

Sorry, but this book just sucks, for the first time in my life I felt like requesting my money back. I wish I had read some of those reviews before wasting my money, are the positive ones from the publishing house?
