Book Description
Flip Flippen is the most influential man you've never heard of. This personable Texan is the founder of The Flippen Group, one of the fastest-growing corporate and personal training companies in America, and his philosophy has touched the lives of some of the most powerful individuals in the country--from Wall Street leaders to top sports figures like Terry Bradshaw and his NASCAR team, and from Joel Osteen's team at Lakewood Church to the 150,000 people who trained with Flip's company in 2005. Great advice for everyone, but particularly appealing to those who are taking stock of what they want to do with the rest of their lives, Flippen's approach is surprisingly simple. When we learn how to identify our "personal constraints" and take the necessary steps to correct self-limiting behaviors, we will experience a dramatic surge in productivity, achieve things we have only dreamed of, and find greater happiness overall. Flippen has created a simple process to help readers find their greatest constraint (the results may be surprising!) and build a plan to help "flip" that weakness into a newfound strength.

Practical and actionable... recommended read........2007-09-12
Talking about capitalizing on a name... :) The Flip Side: Break Free of the Behaviors That Hold You Back by Flip Flippen. This was a book I picked up on in one of the personal productivity blogs I follow, and it is one of the most practical, easy-to-understand books on personal change that I've read recently. Even better, he goes into how *you* can react and respond more effectively to each personality type. And trust me, you'll find your problem coworker/friend/acquaintance in here with no problem. :)
Part 1 - Understanding Personal Constraints: Something Is Holding You Back; The Foundations of OPC (Overcoming Personal Constraints); The Five Laws of Personal Constraints; Overview - The Top 10 Killer Constraints
Part 2 - Identifying Personal Constraints: #1 - Bulletproof (Overconfident); #2 - Ostriches (Low Self-Confidence); #3 - Marshmallows (Overly Nurturing); #4 - Critics (Too Demanding, Nitpicky, or Harsh); #5 - Icebergs (Low Nurturing); #6 - Flatliners (Low Passion, Vision, or Drive); #7 - Bulldozers (Overly Dominant); #8 - Turtles (Resistant to Change); #9 - Volcanoes (Aggressive, Angry); #10 - Quick Draw (Low Self-Control, Impulsive)
Part 3 - Overcoming Personal Constraints: Building Your TrAction Plan; Constraints Are Personal - My Story; Personal-Constraint Combinations; OPC Starts at Home; OPC in the Workplace; Personal Constraints and Culture; Listening to What Others Say - The Power of Honest Feedback
Conclusion - Raised in Captivity; Next Steps; Acknowledgments; Index
I'm sure glad I don't have any of these... NOT! :)
Each of the constraint chapters uses a couple of examples (some historical, some personal from the author's work) to show how a particular trait can play out and limit one's effectiveness. This is followed by the "Are You ..." checklist, which has 10 questions you can ask yourself to see where you fall in terms of that constraint. If you're on the high end of the scale, you'll be interested in the "So I'm ... Help Me!" section that follows. That's where Flippen lays out specific actions you can take to change this part of your behavior. Even better, that section is followed by a "How Can I Deal With A ... Person?". That's where you get to find out what types of communication and actions you can take to make your interactions with that personality type go better. The goal isn't to change them (although that would be nice), but it's more like survival skills so you don't get caught in the debris and aftermath of their limitations.
And in case you're wondering, I have marshmellow-y tendencies with a little flatliner and turtle thrown in...
I think that any book that helps you categorize or examine your behaviors can have a positive influence. The Flip Side seems to work better than most in that you don't have to struggle to see yourself or others in the scenarios, and the advice and actions are concrete and do-able. If you're looking to kick things up another level in your life (or avoid kicking someone else in frustration), I'd recommend this book...
My first boyfriend.......52 years later!.......2007-08-08
I was walking through the book store a few weeks ago and saw The Flip Side on display. I was astonished to discover the author was my first boyfriend!
I bought the book because Flip wrote it. I was so delighted to discover that it offered insightful, practical advice on how to overcome my personal constraints to become the person I have always wanted to be.
The stories Flip relates reveal his warm, loving and humorous personality. He is open and honest with us about himself and his own life and encourages us to do the same thing with ours.
Flip's book is not just another self-help one that will gather dust on your bookshelf. He offers a plan based on his 30+ years of counseling experience with the tools to implement change in your life....if you just do it! It worked for him and it is working for me.
Thanks, Flip, for showing up in my life again in such a truly miraculous way!
A readily accessible guide to improving one's strengths through recognizing and turning around one's weaknesses........2007-08-07
Written by head of The Flippin Group and expert motivational coach Flip Flippen, The Flip Side: Break Free of the Behaviors That Hold You Back is a no-nonsense self-help guide to identifying how personal constraints and often unconscious restrictions can hold one back from one's full potential. Breaking free of those restraints and learning to "flip" negative thoughts and behaviors into positive ones form the core of The Flip Side. Negative personality-driven trait types are listed and range from "bulldozers" (too dominant, ignoring all dissenting options) to "marshmallows" (too nurturing, avoiding conflict at the expense of their happiness) and "quick draws" (too impulsive, with poor self-control). A readily accessible guide to improving one's strengths through recognizing and turning around one's weaknesses.
FlipSide - Up to Flipping.......2007-07-24
As a believer in the process of self-reflective therapy, Flip has provided substantial direction and real-world situations to see that we all have personal areas that keep us from our best. I especiallly appreciated the opportunity and recommendation to take one step at a time and reclaim our best qualities.
The Flip Side: Break Free of the Behaviors That Hold You Back
I highly recommend this book for those who have found they have other roads to travel but have made personal road blocks that only the individual can remove.
Flip Side can change your life.......2007-06-04
I'll be totally up front. I know Flip Flippen, I've worked with him and benefited from his God-given talents. So maybe it doesn't surprise you that I give The Flip Side a 5-star rating.
Within these pages are the keys to unlocking your full potential and from a different perspective - Flip talks about removing the constraints that limit your upside, unlike many who take the angle of building on your strengths.
The book is easy to read, but difficult to implement. You must be fully committed to being honest with yourself. The more you put into the process, the more benefits you will reap from it - no surprise there. Flip's engaging stories will tug on your heart strings and encourage the brutal honesty that is necessary for growth.
Anyone with an open mind and a desire to be better tommorrow than they are today - at work, at home, in the community - will find this book a winner.

Powerful resource.......2007-04-24
Thankfully, Sondra Ray's brilliant "The Only Diet There Is" does not contain a word of advice about food. There's enough of that to be had elsewhere. However, the affirmations in it provide a marvellous technique for self-discpline and stabilization. You can also apply these techniques to other situations.
The "diet" is basically one of love, based on forgiveness and of complete acceptance of youself. Only when you forgive yourself can you deal with the rest of your life and not be stuck in the past.
This is a book that I regularly dip into. It's fabulous stuff (although I don't buy into the Christian bit or the birth trauma - but you can just take the useful bits and bypass the bits you don't need.) I'm not a New Age person, but have found this to be a useful and flexible book. It will not replace dieting, but it will help you to clear your thoughts and trust your higher self to make the right choices.
An amazing turnkey to achieving your ideal weight and measures.......2007-01-05
Through its excercises of love and forgiveness, I have indeed never been as beautiful as I look today. People notice and have been asking for the secret. Yet, even when that was all in my mind when I first began reading it, soon weight lacked importance at the sight of the major goodness you can achieve by the perfect state of mind that the book implies, such as also gaining remarkable health, better and enhanced relationships with everyone, extending happiness all around you. You may also forsee the possibility of dealing with other issues, like smoking for instance. When I began Sondra's excercises to the reasons my inner self was hiding to prevent weight lose, I just couldn't believe the answers I found in myself.
Power of Positive Thinking Bull.......2006-07-22
This book is not just shallow, it is the usual rehash:
On page 33 it says:
1. Thought is creative and thoughts produce results.
[Thought is creative? What the h? Why in the world does that matter? Why bring that up? Why not say, "Thoughts are made in your head". Who cares? And "thoughts produce results" duh! Why state the utter obvious?]
2. It is not what you eat that can hurt you. It is what you BELIEVE about what you eat that can hurt you.
[Wrong, if you eat poison you will be hurt by it unless you have built up a tolerance for it, and that only works with certain poisons. Try eating a titanium chair and see if your teeth survive. I doubt believing the chair will fit in your mouth and be nutritious will really cause that to happen. But try it if you want. Or how about eat Oreo cookies and imagine it tastes like lemons? How about pretending hydrogenated fat won't clog your arteries if you keep eating it everyday in large amounts?]
3. Therefore food is not "fattening" by itself. [Bull, see above and take my tests then.] The thoughts you have about foods are what make it fattening. No, a food contains fat if there is fat in it, not because of what you believe is in it, and it's going to make you fat if the content contains to little fat or the wrong proportions of fat etc. Our minds do not change reality, it can only act in it.]
a A study done on people weighing precisely their desired weight showed that all of them could eat anything they wanted to without any concern or worry.
[And what study was this? The one you invented with your creative thoughts? The author makes no reference to this study, I wonder why. And why even bother, if what you believe is automatically true, why bother with references to studies? Show me any study where a a group of people can eat aluminum powder, ricin, acid, gobs of salt and the hottest pepper in the world, and sewage, and not get sick. Furthermore, NOT EVERYONE GETS FAT! Of course if you have a group of people who have a high metabolism who eats whatever they want will not get fat because they poop it out immediately. Furthermore, did the study account for excercise? Show us the evidence!]
b. They could do so beause all of them had one thing in common. They all had the thought that they could eat whatever they wanted and whenever they wanted without gaining weight. "I never gain weight" is simple enough.
[You heard it! Just believe that you won't gain weight and you won't, of course! The solution to the problems of the world is our beliefs! Well then, believe money into your wallet, believe you are the smartest in the world, believe you've got the highest paying job, believe there is world peace. BULL!]
4. Actually, our true nourishment comes to us from the light of God, not from food.
[Okay, light eating time! Where can I get some edible light.]
5. Any physical technique, such as fasting or special diets, works because your mind believes it will work. [Check it out I'm believing I am thin and I magically just got thin right now, really, I'm not kidding, lol.]
8. You must diet from negative thoughts about your body and food and yourself. [Cool, all you ugly beer-bellied women out there trying to get hot rich husbands, imagine there is nothing wrong with your appearance and that they will marry you for your imaginary good looks, really, it'll work all the time.]
Accidental find...or was it.....?.......2005-10-16
I have been suffering from compulsive yo-yo dieting for sixteen years. I was at the bookstore looking in the self-help section for anything that could stop the insanity in my head and my compulsion with bingeing and dieting. The title of this book caught my attention. The information inside is invaluable. After reading a few pages I tried to find the publishing date. 1982!!! I had a feeling it wasn't written currently because it is so completely honest and straight from the heart. No worries about being "P.C." here. The majority of the book is affirmations and ways to change your way of looking at food.
I wish I could tell everyone about this book. If you are in any way obsessed with food, please give this book a try and then drop by your local Overeaters Anonymous meeting. The two together have changed my life.
A few good affirmations, but mostly New Age nonsense.......2005-08-30
This is one of those books that essentially tells you that your negative feelings about people and things are the reason you are overweight. The author totally dismisses any such notion that one could simply be eating too much. While it is obvious that having certain attitudes can make you ignore what and how much you're eating, the fact remains that one is overweight from eating too much for one's particular body.
If you want things and people to blame your overweight on, this book is chock-full of them. Yes, you're supposed to forgive everyone, but you definitely get a "victim mentality" while reading the book. Whatever happened to personal responsibility?
This author is a big fan of "rebirthing", and mentions it several times throughout the book. If you're not into New Age beliefs, this is not the book for you.

Book Description
The 1990s witnessed the emergence of a spectacular and widespread body modification culture that celebrates such practices as pierc-ing, tattooing, scarification, subdermal implants, and flesh hanging per--form-ances. Based on years of interviews with body modifiers through-out the U.S., In the Flesh provides the most comprehensive and objective look at this widespread phenomenon. From punk rock to 'modern primitives,' from queer SM to cyberpunks, sociologist Victoria Pitts provides insight into the vast diversity of body modifi-ca-tion subcultures and explores the way these groups alter their bodies in response to the social and psychological restrictions of the modern world.

save your money.......2007-06-28
poor quality printing with very few photo's and what they were was not up to today's standards
Body modification-let the truth be told!.......2004-06-11
The book deals with a myriad of social issues pertaning to the body and its modification to show both resistance and conformaty to mainstreem and subculture respectively. And indeed the book was interesting to read once and maybe twice if one is writing their masters thesis or doctoral dissertaion. However, I felt that the book would someteimes just drag on and on. What was however interesting was the course that included the book in its uses. The work is very academic, professional and worth the time to read.
Superbly intelligent rendering of postmodern culture.......2004-05-11
Victoria Pitts's book "In the Flesh" is the most brilliant analysis of postmodern culture I have ever read. Through the lens of recent phenomena in body modification--from the beautifying to the erotic and grotesque--she shows how issues of subjectivity are complexly intertwined with body strategies--performances in which the actors at once gain and lose themselves. With exquisite analysis of fascinating subjects and clear-minded use of postmodern theory, her book is the epitome of rigorous scholarship, both theoretical and empirical. It is, in a word, a theory of flesh and its agencies; but beyond the body, it offers us a scaffolding from which to view the painfully complex issues of contemporary culture at large.
bodies and culture.......2004-04-07
This is a fascinating book that is theoretically sophisticated and guides us through the body in modern and postmodern theory. Her insight into the range of body modification practices and how they are linked to broader cultural shifts in late modernity is sharp and convincing.
Modifying the Medical Line.......2004-01-10
In the Flesh is an insightful examination of the more extreme body modification subculture, one that invites the reader to re-examine his or her expectations about bodies, body politics, and medical technologies. A generous writer, Pitts presents her research to the reader and offers a framework for investigating how some bodily alterations are medicalized or accepted because they enforce normative expectations about health and beauty, and how others are pathologized. In lively and lucid prose, the author provides us with a useful look at an important issue, and does so (much to her credit) without confining her research participants or her readers to a specific political camp. There may be bright political lines between circumcision, botox injections, Michael Jackson, and flesh hangings -- or then again, maybe there are not. In the Flesh gives us new tools with which to draw those lines for ourselves.
Book Description
The road of body modification, piercing, and mutilation is untraveled by most people, yet it holds an undeniable fascination for many. This book, the first monograph devoted to Musafar's photography, chronicles this compelling topic in an amazing collection of 140 photographs taken by Fakir Musafar, the "father of the modern primitive movement." A world-renowned shaman, artist, master piercer, and body modifier, Musafar has devoted most of his life to the personal exploration of body decoration, photographing himself and others since the 1940s. Revealing a modernist edge, these photographs are beautifully composed and printed. Their power as images, however, resides in the intense, unexpected beauty of Musafar's exploration of the spirit/flesh connection.

Fakir Musafar's "Spirit + Flesh" is a must for any fan of contemporary body art. In a time of crass uniformity and conservative, right-wing ideologies running rampant over the global consciousness, this book shines like a beacon in the darkness. This is what the world needs now. Fakir is a master photographer who is not afraid of putting forth images of his deepest self. Not all of the photos are of Mr. Musafar; there are lovely photos of other individuals, some of whom will be familiar to people who study alt-culture. As stated by others, the forward by Mr. Thompson maps the context of the spiritual place from which Mr. Musafar's art emanates. I cannot recommend the book highly enough.
This book is becoming hard to find, so get it while you can. Buy it before our president bans it. This is an important book because it documents spiritual liberation in its purest form. As such, it is required material for anyone who is interested freedom and free thinking.
Great Book.......2003-04-12
This book is very well made. It was not exactly what I expected but I was not disapointed. I was hoping for more piercing pictures or scarification or suspension but all in all it is still fun to look at. I think if you are into bondage it is a good book for you. I myself am not but I still found the pictures inspiring.
Awesome in the true meaning of the word.......2002-10-22
Spirit + Flesh - Anyone who picks up a copy of this remarkable book to admire the photographs should first read the tender forward written by Mark Thompson. The forward is a guide to understanding the story behind the beautiful, artistic photographs taken by Fakir over many years. Some people may find them disturbing or shocking, but there is more to the photographs than images of body modification, visual beauty, and our own perceptions of pain that might have been endured to reach the altered states represented in some of the photos. Leafing through the book and studying the stunning photographs, a story of a remarkable and unique man emerges. This is a book to linger over and share with friends whom understand what it is like to be "different". I am very pleased I added this book to my library.
Libidomag.com review by Jack Hafferkamp.......2002-05-19
...Fakir Musafar's personal transformation from nerdy teenager to seeker of transcendental sublimity is measurable in this collection from brave little Arena Editions. With knots, corsets, tattoos, piercings, suspensions and body modification tools not easily describable, Farkir goes where few dare.
Be forewarned, this book, beautifully designed and realized as it is, is disturbing. If you think Robert Mapplethorpe went too far, this is probably not for you. The images we run here in the Libido Review Gallery are on the cuddly end. Others in the book make me wince no matter how often I see them.
Not all of the images in this book are of Fakir, but most are. And this is as it should be, because it is clear that Fakir is the centerpiece of his own universe, in which the TV idea of the makeover is taken to an extreme hard to imagine without seeing it.
After the initial shock wears off, one can't help but wonder why, one would want to poke very large nails into one's self or hang one's body from giant hooks like so much cattle carcass. Why would one do this to one's self.
The answer is found both in the photos and Mark Thompson's excellent introduction. For me the question turn on the point at which performance art becomes a public spiritural quest. For Fakir, pain is a portal to the divine; he has turned himself into a "technician of the sacred," using his own body much the same way flagellants from a variety of religions use pain to seek the divine.
The only difference is that Farkir has documented his experiments with a photographic artists's eye.
Spirit + Flesh showcases the photography of Fakir Musafar.......2002-05-16
When a young 13-year-old named Roland first began experimenting with body play in South Dakota, he carefully took and developed pictures of the rituals he was imitating from books and National Geographic magazines. Nearly 60 years later, this boy is now a man named Fakir Musafar, who coined the term "modern primitive" and who teaches piercing and leads shamanic rituals in northern California and around the world.
Collected here are images Musafar has taken of himself and friends as they have experimented personally, using body modification methods as a way of exploring themselves and as an alternative to other methods of achieving altered states of consciousness for spiritual growth. This is a high quality publication, the first monograph focusing on Musafar's photography of these journeys. Many of the images are intense, closeup and highly personal. For those unfamiliar with modern-day body modification, some of the images (body piercing, kavandi bearing, ball dancing) may be shocking or uncomfortable.
In the past, Fakir contributed to underground publications, or produced his own small books, or his more recent magazine "body play" as a way of showing his art and photography. Even if you have been seeking out and collecting these random small publication, this is the definitive collection of this artist's work. These images are powerful, intense and unexpectedly beautiful.
Book Description
Although instances of deliberate skin-cutting are recorded as far back as the old and New Testaments of the Bible the behavior has generally been regarded as a symptom of various mental disorders. With the publication of Bodies Under Siege, a book described in the New York Times Magazine (July 17, 1997) as "the first to comprehensively explore self-mutilation," Dr. Armando Favazza has pioneered the study of the behavior as significant and meaningful unto itself. Drawing from the latest case studies from clinical psychiatry he broadens our understanding of self-mutilation and body modification and explores their surprising connections to the elemental experiences of healing, religions, salvation, and social balance.
Favazza makes sense out of seemingly senseless self-mutilative behaviors by providing both a useful classification and examination of the ways in which the behaviors provide effective but temporary relief from troublesome symptoms such as overwhelming anxiety, racing thoughts, and depersonalization. He offers important new information on the psychology and biology of self-mutilation, the link between self-mutilation and eating disorders, and advances in treatment. An epilogue by Fakir Musafar, the father of the Modern Primitive movement, describes his role in influencing a new generation to "experiment with the previously forbidden 'body side' of life" through piercing, blood rituals, scarification, and body sculpting in order to attain a state of grace.
The second edition of Bodies Under Siege is the major source of information about self-mutilation, a much misunderstood behavior that is now coming into public awareness.

There Goes the Boat.......2006-10-07
This guy completely missed it. He attempted to relate/equate self-mutilation to/with many unrelated cultural practices. If you are looking for a book about self-mutilation that has any insight about this multifaceted and deeply emotionally complex concept, this is not it. I read it when it first came out. The author was a doctor at UMC where I earned three degrees, including a Master's in Counseling Psychology. I met with this man, a dangerous cutter myself at the time, and his presentation was as judgemental, cold and clueless as his book. What a sad disappointment when simple hope was needed.
Very comprehensive book (essential for those who self-injure).......2006-07-20
I've been cutting myself for many years, and have read books on the subject for a number of those years. This is by far one of the best I've read for Favazza does an extremely deep study into the history of self-injury, both cultural forms and what he terms "deviant" forms. While not as entertaining as "A Bright Red Scream," and definately more scholarly than most books on the subject, I still consider it essential for those who cut or the loved ones of those who cut. However, it isn't so much a personal or supportive book, and will mostly trigger more cutters than it will help. The only reason I give it four stars instead of five though is because of some of the misconceptions that even the author shows, such as relating self-injury to body piercing and such (which he has already gotten some heat about already.) I also don't like the terms "mentally ill," "wrist slashers," " slicers," etc. as words for those who cut. I also found the first few pages of chapter 11 very hard to read for similar reasons.
Armando has lost his mind.......2004-04-01
I've met this guy a few times. Cat is stuck on him self. Maybe if he would take time to understand people instead of worrying about himself he would get it.
UGH.......2004-02-18
BODY MODS ARE NOT MUTILATION. this author was very ignorant
Not for everyone, but a good book nonetheless.......2003-02-26
This book is not strictly for folks who have self-injury related issues & may want insight into their disorder. I saw this piece as more of a tool for people who are curious & don't know much about self-harm & body modification. This book can be somewhat graphic in detail so if you're a bit on the sqeamish side you may want to pass.

Customer Reviews:
An effective, highly recommended book........2000-04-06
Dr. Gary McKay and Dr. Don Dinkmeyer are practicing psychologists who have co-authored several books. How You Feel Is Up To You: The Power Of Emotional Choice is their latest offering, in which they teach readers how to gain control of their feelings. They say their book "is designed to help you gain control over your strong unpleasant emotions--guilt, anger, depression, stress, anxiety--and increase your joy and happiness. The doctors first discuss emotions, explaining how and why they're created. They then show how negative emotions can be replaced with positive feelings like joy and happiness. The trick is in learning how to change your thinking. Five basic principles are the key to changing the way you think. First you must learn to accept your feelings and yourself, then remind yourself to live in the present, rather than the past. Thirdly, you need to recognize the purpose of negative feelings. Then you need to become aware of your thoughts, and finally, develop a plan for change. Each of these principles is fully discussed, with detailed instructions and exercises for incorporating them into your life. Self-discovery exercises are sprinkled throughout the book, to help guide you through the steps. The doctors also provide real-life examples from their privatepractices. McKay and Dinkmeyer say that "choice is powerful; it sets you free." They explain that "while you may be able to do little or nothing about a change that results from external circumstances in your life, you can decide how you will respond. Your response is in your control." They offer practical help in learning how to gain control of your responses, so that you can choose your emotions. Readers who are tired of anger, depression, guilt, and all the other familiar negative emotions will find How You Feel Is Up To You an effective teacher of the skills they need for making healthier and happier choices. Practical, Powerful, and Effective.......1997-09-12
I am a marriage and family therapist and I highly recommend this book. It is the best book on managing emotions and putting the individual in control. Particularly the chapter on anger was incredibly useful and gives the skills to transform a person who feels any emotions (ie. anger, depression, anxiety, etc.) are out of balance. I have recommended this book to many of my clients and have witnessed dramatic results as a result of them using these principles.

Book Description
A groundbreaking work that sees the contemporary cultural trends of tattooing, piercing, implanting, and branding as a quest for a transformative psychic experience.
• Features unforgettable color photographs by Steve Haworth, the foremost body modification artist in the United States.
• Introduces a subculture that has gone far beyond the realm of simple tattooing.
Acts of body modification are deeply rooted in physical impulses that are obscured in our technological society. As we become more removed from the physicality of our existence, we lose touch with an essential part of our humanity. Body modification is a way of reconnecting to our bodies, to the earth, and to the divine.
Pagan Fleshworks reveals that the prevalence of body modification--tattooing, piercings, brandings, and implants--is the postmodern way to heal the body and enliven the soul. These "fleshworks" are the result of people creating their own rituals and symbols of meaning in order to feel a sense of the divine within.
Maureen Mercury relates the various stages of obtaining fleshworks to the stages of alchemy, showing how fleshworks lead to psychic transformation--soul-making. Using mythological imagery and the stories of those who have chosen to modify their bodies, she identifies the signposts of our journey toward self-expression, exploring the connection between our desires and our outward life. More than 30 riveting color photographs by leading body modification artist Steve Haworth provide the perfect visual complement to this examination of the soul as it rises toward freedom.

Mind. Body. Soul........2001-12-27
I've read and viewed almost all of the formative works on body modification, and for the most part I've been left with a rotten taste in my mouth, and an even greater sense of dispair for the unmodified world around me.
But this book is a bit different, I suspected and hoped this would shine a different light on my culture when I first heard about it. Having Reverend Haworth's input made my hopes soar even higher, he being the frontman to all that is extreme body modification in the WORLD at the moment. There are quite a few piercer's in the world, but none with his intelligence or dedication to do surgical mods with such grace and fluence, he is THE Body Modification Artist of our times. And of course he's my COBM Rev. of choice, which may mean I'm a bit biased. :)
Nice pictures, not so artistic that someone who doesn't know much about modification won't know what's going on (such as with ModCon's photos which I have to explain in detail to people). The book as a literary whole is put together well, and gives a broad expanse of insight on body modification... showing it as human society's natural progression that we've followed since we first evolved, not as a fad meant to draw attention.
Pagan Fleshworks is a better book than most when it comes to this topic, it didn't change my views on anything and I didn't agree with everything written. But it wasn't the usual "in-your-face-this-is-what's-right"... that people who throw around their doctorates as a means of justification put out regularly.
It gives the mind room to interpet, and conceive it's own thoughts... because after all that's what this culture's about... freedom of choice and expression.
It's not a must have buy to me (even though I own it), but it certainly deserves a checkout from the local library.
Marking the body to heal the soul.......2001-04-23
In this book, Maureen Mercury proposes that the growing popularity and acceptance of body modification in western culture is due to our need to recapture the personal rituals that we have lost. This book is not aimed at a neo-pagan audience, but at individuals who are looking for something deeper and more personally spiritual. I found myself agreeing with many of the ideas in this book. The photographs by Steve Haworth are outstanding as well. Place this one near the top of the list of the recent group of body modification books.

Okay, okay- I've reviewed this book already. I wanted to say that if you like body modification, are new to it, or simply have an interest, then you might want to check out this website:

It's a huge collection of photos and stories of people brave enough to modify themselves in accordance with their own wishes.
Highly recomended, as is this book. Hope this helps you find what you're looking for. :)
pagan fleshworks.......2001-02-17
Any one interested in pagan culture, neo-paganism or wicca this is NOT the book for you. It should have been titled "Punk Fleshworks". If you are interested in the current punk-rock scene and body art then this will be of interest to you and well worth the read.
Amazing photos, comprehensive scope.......2000-11-27
Many people today are interested in finding something more in today's hectic post-modern world. In this diverse and exceptionaly researched book, the author and photographer shows us one way in which some individuals find that elusive "deeper meaning": mody modification.
Operating on the premise that one's own body is yours and yours alone, and that the more profoundly affecting an expierience the better, the reader is taken on a step by step tour through this little known but very intriguing world.
There are photos galore, many of them (almost all) in color. Some are truly awesome and unforgettable; this earns its place, rightfully so, as a work of art.
Overall, this book is immaculate and a perfect addition to the bookshelf of someone looking for some variety and searching for something new, exiting and different.
Not to mention pretty damn cool!

disappointing.......2007-09-10
this book was very disappointing. not alot of information and any information it had was very general. hardly any pictures or anything of value. skimmed the book did not even bother to read it. seemed to be made for people who are not even old enough to get pierced or tattooed.
Caveat: NOT the Be All to End All..........2003-01-08
"The Body Art Book" is billed as a "complete, illustrated guide," which it isn't. It highlights many topics, but none in depth. There are eight pages of color photos, and some black and white illustrations. However, for every thing I found wrong with this book, there was an equal and opposite reaction. For example:
Regarding latex gloves: "Every piercer MUST wear latex gloves when touching sterilized tools or jewelry." Should this read "Every BODY ARTIST?" (After all, NOT only piercers should be gloved!) Furthermore, what about artists or clients with latex allergies? However, pointing out that gloves should be changed if the [artist] picks up the phone was very important.
Regarding piercing guns: not enough emphasis, in my opinion, placed on the fact that professional piercers never use guns. However, the author DOES mention it, which is information that a lot of people don't know.
There were a few snide comments about people who get body modifications to be cool. While that wouldn't be my motivation, if I were the author I might have said something more to the effect of One's body is sacred, so one might want to take that into consideration before making permanent changes for the sake of fashion (in other words, perhaps less condescending).
I'm also not crazy about the layout of the book. Piercing and tattoo information is separated within chapters, instead of being in separate chapters. Also, I don't know why henna and scarification were in the same chapter!
The author seems to have fleshed out an outline, but doesn't seem to have gone much further. It's a shame, because there is a ton of information on the Internet that would have given a great deal of substance to this book.
There IS some incredibly valuable information in this book -- information that many people wouldn't have without doing some research AND information with which most people are not armed before walking into a studio.

dont waste your money.......2002-10-24
I can not believe that a publisher would agree to call this book 'complete' it is ANYTHING but complete. In fact, it is downright skimming. This shows some poorly drawn illustrations of completed facial piercings/ear piercings and that is about it - there is no 'guide' about it. It shows a few pages of colour tattoos, but clearly was not well thought out. I am returning mine and suggest that if you pay more than garage sale price, youve been taken. My opinion, thats all.
Good Book For the Novice Tattoo Artist or Piercer.......2002-01-08
This book is definately suited for the novice tattoo artist or piercer. Lots of good basic information on both if you are just getting started in either field. There is also a list of tattoo emporiums/salons/shops all over the world in the back of this book. The book is low on anythong that could be used as flash, and is definately more of a reference book.
Basic information.......2001-09-04
It is very complete and has a lot of information however I was disapointed because there is not much of interest if you are already knowledgeable in the subject. Addresses the reader in an infantile tone which I disliked and I found it rather repetitive .
Book Description
This fascinating collection explores the growing range of body modification practices such as piercing, tattooing, branding, cutting and inserting implants, which have sprung up recently in the West. It asks whether this implies that we are returning to traditional tribal practices of inscribing identities onto bodies on the part of 'modern primitives', or is body modification better understood as purely cosmetic and decorative with body markings merely temporary signs of transferable loyalties? Contributors address the question of the permanence of body transformation through fitness regimes and body building; look at the French performance artist Orlan and the Australian performance artist Stelarc who explored Western standard of beauty by experimenting on their own bodies with surgery and prosthetics; and explore the construction of the anatomy of a virtual body in Real Video Surgery and the Visible Human Project. Academics and students in sociology, cultural studies, anthropology, communication studies, social psycholgy and art and design
