Nancy Drew Clue Crew - The Fashion Disaster.......2007-10-01
My daughter loved this book. It is a quick read for a 4th grader, but my daughter liked the mystery and it was perfect for her to read over the weekend. I have already ordered 5 more to keep her reading for fun, especially on the weekends.

Puss in hot pink boots.......2006-11-07
Take a trip back in time with me to the halcyon days of 2005. A time when graphic novels for children were hardly as commonplace as they are today. Ah '05. Whatta year. I remember it well. At the time, I was searching in vain for above par graphic novels for kids to add to my very short list of library-worthy titles. There really wasn't much out there, but one name kept coming up over and over again. Something called "Fashion Kitty". Being the kind of girl that I am, I took one look at the book's sparkly cover, preference for all things pink, and use of the word "fashion" in the title, and promptly never thought of the book again. Until now. Recently my library purchased a large swath of graphic novels for young `uns and there, perched cheerily at the top of the pile, was Charise Mericle Harper's creation. I circled it warily and thought it might be safe to just flip through idly and call it a day. Flipping, however, began and ended on page three where I read the following line: "The FIRST reason the Kittie family is unusual is that a cat having a mouse for a pet is similar to a human having a chocolate cake for a pet." This sentence is immediately followed by the image of a boy leading a pink frosting-laden chocolate cake by a leash as he murmurs to it, "I love you, but I wish I could eat you!" I was hooked. I showed the book to my least graphic-novel-lovin' colleague. She was hooked. Even if you are no fan of fashion, kitties, or even comics in general, "Fashion Kitty", has the power to win over even the toughest of critics. Is it girly? Or lordy, yes. Is it fun? You bet your sweet bippy.
Right off the bat there are three things you need to know about the Kittie family. First of all, they own a pet mouse. Second, daughters Kiki and Lana get to pick out all their own clothes. Third, "The Kittie family knows the secret identity of Fashion Kitty." Fashion Kitty, as it happens, was born out of a potentially tragic accident involving a birthday wish, a rickety shelf, and some fashion magazines. From out of that toxic threesome emerged none other than Fashion Kitty herself with such super-powered elements as the "Tail of comfort", "Supersonic feet" and a brain that can "mix and match hundreds of outfits in a second". Thus, mild-mannered Kiki Kittie is now Fashion Kitty when she detects that someone is moving towards a fashion disaster. Take, for example, poor Mary Jane who was about to believe popular and cruel Priscilla Persian that everyone the next day would be wearing polka-dotted shorts over their pants. In the end, Kiki has a new lot (and outfit) in life, Mary Jane is redeemed, and Priscilla Persian gets what's coming to her.
Obviously the first thing people are going to say when they see "Fashion Kitty" is, "Boy, that looks a lot like the `Babymouse' books, doesn't it?" We're living in such a graphic novel-starved world that when two books involve a palette of pinks alongside an anthropomorphized heroine, we immediately equate the one with the other. "Babymouse", I should point out, is very different from her feline brethren. Where "Fashion Kitty" involves an actual superhero, the closest "Babymouse" ever gets to hero-dom is in her dreams. "Fashion Kitty" is wish-fulfillment and "Babymouse" is far more realistic. That doesn't make "Kitty" any less fun to read, however. I mean, Harper's sense of humor is really the book's saving grace. It would be remarkably simple to create a vapid fashion-entranced graphic novel for little girls without a drop of humor or sense of its own innate silliness. Harper's title, however, never takes its subject matter seriously. We're talking flying fashion-conscious cats here, people. So when Harper includes a montage of some boys who don't give "two hoots" about what they wear, you know it's gonna be good. I was also rather charmed by young Lana Kittie, who is the antithesis of her older sister's good sense. Lana is only four, so if she wants to wear stocking around her next, underpants on the outside of her pants, or three skirts in a row she's perfectly entitled to do so and it doesn't matter a jot.
Oddly enough, in spite of its September 2005 publication date, you won't be seeing the sequel to this book (entitled, "Fashion Kitty Verses the Fashion Queen") until May 2007. Most peculiar. Random House has been churning out the "Babymouse" books at least every 6 months. I wonder if Hyperion will try to follow suit when they see how profitable such a series might be. If you haven't yet found yourself with a copy of "Fashion Kitty" on hand, definitely consider giving it a glance. A fun GN and a rollicking good time.
We loved it.......2006-10-02
I checked out this book from the library, and my 10 year old son and I read it before my 8 year old daughter (the intended audience) got her hands on it. All 3 of us enjoyed it. Before she got finished with it, my daughter was asking if there were more of them. We will be waiting anxiously for a new one. I'd recommend it for any reader who gets bogged down with chapter books, but even chapter book readers will enjoy it. I compare it to our son's delight with the Captain Underpants graphic novels. Easy to read and funny!
Even good for a 5 year old.......2006-05-28
My 5 year old is on her third time through this book. She has enjoyed looking at the pictures on her own and having the book read to her twice while she helps with some of the smaller words. It has been a great way to get her involved in reading. She can't wait for the next Fashion Kitty book to come out!
GREAT READ.......2005-10-02
I purchased this book for my 8 year old daughter. Getting her to read can sometimes be a chore so I was thrilled when I showed her this book and she could not put it down. It's funny for children and adults. She was chuckling to herself as she read. It's great because the language is not too easy but there are pictures to break things up for her. One of the biggest adjustments for emergent readers is the lack of pictures and getting used to that concept. I wish there were more of these books to buy and can't wait for another installment.

Customer Reviews:
Sensational.......2007-05-12
I have not used the book yet for a pattern, but it is there for when I finish my four projects in progress. I can't wait to try a vest!
Old fashion styles........2007-05-07
I bought this book based on the previous reviews. I was dissapointed in the fashion styles. I was not inspired with any of the patterns offered. I haven't tried any of the patterns, so in fairness of it all, I gave it two stars.
A Great Find!.......2006-03-19
A great collection of patterns that are easy to follow and offer several interesting variations for each project, plus ideas for adding your own personal embellishments, buttons, beads, etc. I also enjoyed the authors narratives on the "art of knitting" as well as the helpful hints and techniques. A must have for any knitter, beginner or experienced!
If you're truly "brand new," you'll probably need some help.......2003-05-20
The instructions were difficult for me as a "brand new" knitter. I took a beginner's class (total of 6 hours), and my mom is an experienced knitter who has taught me a few things over the years, but I had to consult my knitting teacher and my mom from time to time when I was stumped as to what the instructions meant. One example: "Reverse all shapings" with no clue as to how this is done. My knitting instructor agreed that this book is definitely not for a true beginner; however, she did think the Sally Melville books were excellent (The Knit Stitch and The Purl Stitch).
The sweaters are beautiful and I look forward to knitting many of them, but I will be sure to have my mom and knitting teacher available to explain how to do some of the instructions for the forseeable future.
I don't mind the more expensive yarns, as I think you may as well use great yarn if you're putting all that time into a project. Also, it makes a huge difference to knit with really nice yarn--the yarn really makes the sweater.
So, five stars for the sweaters, but unless I'm really dense compared with other "brand new" knitters, I have to drop my rating down to 3 stars due to the struggles I'm having in understanding the instructions.
I thought you said for "Brand-New Knitter".......2003-05-02
I am a "Brand-New Knitter". The sweaters in this book are more than beautiful. I would like to make several of them. The majority of the instructions seem simple enough. However, when reading the pattern to see if I understood what was being instructed, I ran into an instruction that made absoutely no sense to the "Brand-New Knitter" on the second sweater.
Here are the instructions for the left front:
Left front: Cast on 31 (33,39,42)sts and knit
until peice measures same as back to start of shoulder shaping.
Work left shoulder shaping as for back. (I guess I could figure this out once I started knitting)
Continue working the remaining 15 (15,16,18) sts for collar for a further 3(3 1/2, 3 1/2, 4) inches.
BO.
But, if you are a "Brand-New Knitter" see if you understand this:
Right front: Work same as left front, reversing all
shaping.
Place markers on back for under arm.
What does this mean??? The sad part is, is that every pattern in the book with a right and left front is written like this. Maybe the problem is in understanding the left shoulder shaping. If this part of the instructions were clear I would rate this book a 5 star because she repeats the same technique/instructions over and over.

Customer Reviews:
Nice and fashionable crochet patterns but..........2006-12-28
My biggest problem with this book is that I didn't read the tiny line on the cover which says that it was written by Catherine Blythe "and Patons Design Studio." In other words, every pattern is written for a specific Patons yarn, and there is little info on the type of yarn (e.g., worsted weight, chunky, etc.). Every time I want to make something from this book I have to do research online to find out what yarns I can substitute. Other than that, the book is pretty good. The patterns are modern but not too trendy, and the instructions are clear. I've made a few projects and they've all turned out well.
beautiful designs.......2006-07-28
The designs in this book are very classy and beautiful, I have completed several projects from this book and they turned out great, it compiles several paton's booklets, some of which are out of print, so I am very happy I bought this book.
The only complaint I have about it is that there are some mistakes in the instructions here and there, and on occasion I had to modify the instructions slightly to improve the appearance of the finished garment, which is not really that hard to do because crochet is a very easy craft, I learnt it when I was 5, so if a five year old can do it I'm sure most people would be able to figure the directions out.
Well...I was excited about this book, but now..........2006-06-10
I have almost completed the Daisy Mesh Vest pattern, but wanted to forewarn those of you who want this book. I was thrilled to get it initially, as the patterns and photography looked really good. After this project, though, I am seriously not sure if I will try another from this book. I consider myself to be an intermediate/advanced crocheter, and I have to say that the directions for this vest were not clearly written at all. I have been able to figure them out as I go, but I don't like spending that much time frogging and redoing my work. Let me make myself clear-I have NEVER had to work so hard to figure out what the pattern is trying to say. Overall, the pattern is really simple, but the directions make it waaaaaay more complicated than it needs to be.
That being said, there are some really gorgeous things in this book, so if you are willing to take some extra time to figure out the directions, you might like it.
Worth the $$$.......2006-05-15
I'd say this book is worth the $$$ just for that dogwood shawl pattern on the cover. However, the directions for making it are a little sketchy, I was pretty upset until I figured it out. 4 of the patterns are from the paton's heat wave booklet, which I already had, so a lot of the book was a disappointment to me, but if you don't have those patterns yet, I would call this one inspirational.
Compilation of current Patons crochet booklets.......2006-02-19
I should have researched the contents of the book a little more closely! The patterns in this hardcover book appear to be a compilation of already existing PATONS booklets. I found, to my dismay, that I already have more than half of the patterns in the book because they are reprints of the mini booklets. However, if you do not own any of the Patons crochet booklets, then I would recommend this book. The patterns are cute and not difficult to follow.

Read "The Teen Model Mystery"!!.......2002-03-30
This book was SO great!! People, if you are reading this, I strongly encourage you to read this book!...If readers read, then everyone that have careers will follow!' my preschool teacher likes to say. If people can't read, then nobody would be able to do anything that has to do with literature. Fashion, modeling, action, mystery, and Nancy...the top five things that girls ABSOLUTELY love!!
Helping out.......2002-01-05
First of all I just want to say this is sad that no one can make a little effort to write a review on one of the best series. Anyways, I liked this book. It had everything like all ND mysteries do. Action, adventure, romance (sorta) and mystery (duh).
complex, scary and most of all AMAZING!!!!.......1999-06-11
This book was sooo good. It aws scary plus with something older kids like. Modeling and mystery. I was upset that some of the Nancy Drew books weren't very good but after I read this one I kept wanting to read more and more!
