Book Description
It’s just a small story really, about among other things: a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. . . .
Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak’s groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist–books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement before he is marched to Dachau.
This is an unforgettable story about the ability of books to feed the soul.

Worth reading!.......2007-09-29
I agree with the other reviews both the good and the bad. I have read alot of books about WW2 and the Holocaust, so I think the subject matter held my interest throughout the book. It might have been a hard read for me otherwise. Also some books have more of an entertaining value, and others carry a message that sometimes can be so deep that it is hard to totally appreciate the author's intent. For this exact reason, at times I was frustrated, because I knew that Zusak was trying to portray a deeper meaning then I was grasping.
I however did appreciate the heart that Liesel and the Hubermann's had for the Jewish people. I have not come across many books that address German's hiding Jews, so I found that interesting. I also appreciated the emphasis that was put on the power of words. Finally, I think that Zusak did a great job on developing each character! He himself is very good with words.
Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the subject matter, and who likes a lot of depth in a book. If not, try Anne Frank, The Hiding Place, or even the Zion Covenant Series by Brock and Bodie Theone.
Completely overrated........2007-09-25
I found this book boring and basically uninteresting. I had to read it for a book group and I struggled to get through it. I don't know why all the hype -- it isn't nearly as good as Diary of Anne Frank. All of it has been done before.
Apparently I'm out on a limb as a lone dissenter of what's good in teen fiction, but I'm a school librarian at a high school and the kids didn't like it either.
Amazing book.......2007-09-22
I can't remember the last time a book has had as much of an emotional impact on me as this one. I actually cried as I read it--and I don't know if I've ever cried over a book before. I also sped through the whole thing--over 500 pages--in less than 24 hours. I had to keep shooing away my husband and kids so I could finish reading it. The writing is luminous, the characters are unforgettable and have great depth, and the themes are as important as themes can get. The narrator, Death, is often sly and sarcastic, sometimes bitter, but never mean.
This book may be marketed at the "young adult" market, but "old adults" will like it just as much.
A must read.......2007-09-22
I loved this book! The story is narrarated by a rather witty "angel of death", which in and of itself gives the story an interesting spin. The characters are wonderful, expressing a full gamit of personalities and underlying motivations. It was also very interesting to read a World War II story from a German perspective, yet still have a story which doesn't diminish the horrific Jewish experience. And as heart wrenching as the story was, you are left with a sense of hope that makes you want to go out and do something to change the world.
Unforgettable story of how books can feed even the most starving of souls.......2007-09-20
What a powerful, wonderful book! It was heart-rending, heart-warming, wonderful, painful, compelling... all these things and more. I've just finished listening to this book and I feel stunned and rather bruised. It is such a powerful, wonderful book, yet the subject matter is very sad and at times horrific. I am pretty amazed that this is supposed to be a children's book (first of all, it is huge!). It is so very well written, and the narration was absolutely beyond perfection. In all my years, I have never deeply considered what it must have been like as a young child or teen living in Nazi Germany. This book is vividly written, and I feel as though I lived with the child characters. As a book lover and collector, this book spoke to my spirit and soul. All I can say is "READ IT." On a practical note, I think that a person who listens to this book should also have the hard copy available so that they can see the drawings within its page

George Stella's Livin' Low Carb has little in common with diet books: In fact, it's got more in common with a cookbook you might have bought for yourself when you first moved out on your own. The style is casual and approachable, with no tense lists of diet-related details or overly-complex recipes, and cooking techniques require little more than a working stove and a frying pan.
George Stella (along with pastry chef-wife Rachel) have developed a wide range of recipes designed to compliment Atkins and other low-carb diet regimens. Rather than relying on packaged convenience foods that meet these dietary standards, they focus on home-cooked meals that satisfy the demands of low carb life without tasting like they were baked up in a factory. Flavors include Chinese (Szechuan stir-fry), Italian-American (clams casino), Southern (fried chicken), and American sweets (chocolate chip muffins and no-bake Key lime cheesecake). Snacks, salads, entrees, and desserts all see equal amounts of attention.
There's a heavy reliance on the sugar substitute Splenda, but in general this is real food for daily life. The condiment chapter contains homemade versions of ketchup, mustard sauce, barbecue sauce and even Thousand Island dressing, and makes a simple place to get started even if the only kitchen appliance you're comfortable with is a can opener. Each recipe clearly notes "special equipment" (like 8-inch square pans) as well as the yield, net carbs per serving, and separate times needed for prepping and cooking.
Because of the sugar substitute and number of recipes that alter classics in ways that compromise traditional textures in favor of lowering carbs (such as noodle-free lasagna), the book is most likely to be used by dieters, rather than all home cooks. Still, if you're looking for easy ways to tinker with your food intake that doesn't involve packaged mixes from the diet industry, Stella offers plenty of tasty options. --Jill Lightner

great cookbook!.......2007-08-07
I love this book....I have other low carb cookbooks and I use and enjoy them as well, but when I make recipes out of this book I do not feel like I am using crazy things like pork rinds to bread my chicken. I never thought that I would actually enjoy eating anything made with soy flour, but I have loved every recipe I have made out of this book!
If you eat low carb, this book is for you.......2007-06-24
I have both the Stella cookbooks and use them, if not every day, at least every week. Many of his recipes have become favorites of mine and my guests. The ingredients are easy to find and easy to prepare. Food boredom can become a problem with low carb diets. There's nothing to be bored about in these cookbooks.
I LOVE THIS BOOK.......2007-06-21
This cookbook is chock full of fun and easy recipes! Most can be made in less than a half hour. All can be made with typical kitchen staples except for Soy Flour. Easy to find in any local health food store! Don't wait, buy this book and start feeling and looking better!
Awesome recipes, great taste!.......2007-06-11
The only downside i think is that this isnt a very low carb book. Some recipes have moderate carbs per serving.
Great Cookbook.......2007-06-04

Real recipes for family harmony.......2007-09-02
This is an excellent tool for all parents, not only for those who have indiscipline problems at home. This material represents a strategic plan to develop correctly family relations. All parents, single moms/dads and tutors most have this book as a bible near to their bed. The content is more than just advices; it is a real and complete guide for the parents from all the world and nationalities.
Great Advise.......2007-06-27
Enjoyed reading this book. Lots of helpful hints and gives parents a new perspective on how unique every child is.
Pretty good but not great.......2007-06-12
If you watch the show on even a semi-regular basis then you probably don't need to buy this book. If not, then Nanny 911 is pretty good. Some of the advice seems to fall into the "intuitively obvious" category to me but, then again, there are some pretty stupid people out there replicating themselves...
Overall, it's a decent 101 lesson on communication and relating to children without spoiling them or invalidating their feelings. Basically, their wisdom boils down to respect and consistency. Again, fairly obvious stuff. Even so, I found several useful tips that I will defiantly keep in mind and apply.
Recommended.
Nanny 911: Expert Advice for All Your Parenting Emergencies.......2007-06-08
This book is truly informative and should be read by everyone who has children, is associated with children or is thinking of having children. A lot of the advise is real and basic but unless you get it from the horse's mouth, you don't think about it - Common Sense. It's about teaching YOU how to work with children - train the trainer. I don't have children myself but have have nieces and nephews, and friends with little ones. After reading this I find that I'm able to help them out with issues they may be having with their kids. I've given this book to my brother-in-law who is a single dad, and I've also given it to two young couples who are expecting. A Must Read!
A great parenting tool, and also great for Grandparents!.......2007-03-26
This is one of the best guides to parenting I have ever read, and I am a trained parenting teacher. What I like about this book is it is very tried and true information, practical suggestions, very quick and easy to read and laid out in a way that is easy to reference. The underlying beliefs are based in a firm understanding of what children need to feel happy and behave well, and they never lose sight of the need for a family to share time and love, and for each member to be self-disciplined. This book is primarily practical, NOT theoretical, and the practical approach makes it a very easy book to share. Parenting approaches can be very divisive, both between parents, grandparents, and other caregivers. This books gives simple, practical solutions that are easy for all family members to agree on and try, that are grounded in respect for every family member.
Book Description
This collection of 46 key classic and contemporary readings explores the environment within which public policy is made and the actual policy-making process.
KEY TOPICS: This book includes readings that are among the most frequently cited or that highlight the link between theory and practice particularly well. It groups readings into four major sections which parallel both the majority of policy texts and the way many courses are designed: the nature of public policy including theories and models of public policy making, the making of policy the sequential stages that policies pass through, the players both institutional and non-institutional, policy making as a game the rules, strategies, and culture of the policy game. Each section begins with an overview essay.
Customer Reviews:
A Decent Anthology........2003-01-18
As this is the first anthology of public policy writings I've read, I can't comment on the quality here as compared to other writings. What I can say (after reading about 80% of the essays) is that this is like most anthologies: thorough, varied, and very poorly organized.
The essays here range from everything from philosophy of public policy (Dahl's article) to the tidbits of implementation (Sabatier & Mazmanian's article); from the really well-written (Majone and Wildavsky) to real snoozers (Rubin). With all this variance, the one thing I didn't get is any conflict in views presented. I'm no expert, but I'm sure that public policy experts don't actually agree on as much as these contributors seem to. I can't help getting the feeling that the editors views are amply reflected in these pages.
The other complaint is lack of structure. In particular, the section on "The Players" is put after "Making Public Policy." In retrospect, this made much of the latter-mentioned section harder to understand. Of course, this is easily remedied. If you do buy this collection (and I would hesitatingly reccomend it) read section 3 before section 2.
Uneven - there is a better alternative.......2002-04-26
I agree with the previous reviewer. The anthology is good in principle. Too few students read the original texts. Too many are fed with more or less adequate second-hand versions of what different scholars are saying.
BUT:
- While this anthology contains many classics, there is also a lot of less influential, or totally outdated texts that you should not waste your time on
- A good anthology requires good synthesizing chapters to make it more than the sum of its parts. The introductory chapters in this one are too brief and not very thrilling.
- The texts are too short. You only get little snippets.
- Many texts feel outdated, while much of the current litterature is missing.
There is a MUCH better public policy anthology which meets all these requirements: Daniel C. McCool (1995) "Public Policy Theories, Models, and Concepts" Prentice Hall. I would recommend that book instead, no doubt. Better, longer, more relevant and up-to-date texts, and very good comments by the editor. Have a look at that book instead of this one!
A thorough, if uneven, reader.......2000-09-13
While selecting textbooks for a public policy theory course, I ran across this reader. It should serve well for a public policy course given a couple limitations. First, the chapters are heterogeneous and uneven. You will need to spend some time deciding what readings are worthwhile and how to organize the readings you wish to keep. Second, the readings will require explicit integration in to lectures and core textbooks. The articles are not very well integrated. In the end, I think this collection of essays will make an excellent resource for instructors who take the time to incorporate some of the excellent chapters. If you want to include original articles from political scientists in a policy course, this is a good place to turn.
Book Description
Applications in Human Resource Management is a single source of cases, exercises, incidents, and skill builders to supplement introductory human resource management courses. These materials offer a fresh approach based on dynamic, real-life organizational events confronting both human resource managers and line managers. The cases are based on "real" events that have taken place in organizations and the exercises and skill builders are intended to give learners the hands-on skills they will need in facing the challenges of today's workplace.
Customer Reviews:
Great teaching resource........2007-01-04
This is an excellent case book. I have been using it for a number of years and find that my students learn a great deal from the wide variety of cases. I strongly recommend this book. In fact, I dropped the text and use this instead. I supplement the case discussions but students get much more from the class by using this book.
Book Description
THE ART OF THE GAME defines the dynamics of public policy, elucidates the complexity intrinsic to each stage of the policy process, and delves into the implications of public policy for American politics and society. Illustrating concepts and theories relevant to the policy process, the text incorporates contemporary examples with a variety of creative exercises that develop a theoretical and practical understanding of the subject matter. Underscoring this approach is a desire to combine both academic and applied perspectives. This approach helps readers to comprehend the significance of each stage and the dynamics of the policy process. In other words, rather than offering mere description or a standard explanation of the subject matter, THE ART OF THE GAME merges solid coverage of theoretical principles with an applied policy approach.
Customer Reviews:
Good introduction to public policy.......2007-01-29
This book is a good introduction to the study of public policy.
It covers a wide range of topics. It begins by looking at basic concepts in the study of public policy--from power to representation to basic values (e.g., efficiency, equality, justice). It also begins by examining key actors and institutions in the policy process.
Next, the volume addresses basic theories of the policy process (e.g., rational choice, stages of the policy process, and so on). It goes on to explore the various stages of the process, from problem identification and recognition to agenda setting to policy design and formulation to policy adoption to policy implementation to policy evaluation and, finally, to policy change or termination.
The final segment of the book summarizes the politics of policy issues such as environmental policy, education policy, health care policy, and so on.
The last chapter is a useful summary of the book. Overall, this is a solid introduction to the study of public policy. It provides a wide ranging introduction to the subject in a competently written manner.

Customer Reviews:
Love it... as usual.......2007-07-12
As usual I was immediately drawn in by Ms. Cameron's work. The horrific opening captured my interest and the main characters quickly found their way into my heart. I found the premise unique; especially the unusual take on the 'love triangle'. Reading Stella Cameron's work is like taking a mini-vacation. You're transported to the location of the story; you can feel the heavy, humid air. It was wonderful and I intend to share it with the readers in my family. I'll read anything with this author's name on the front cover.
Target - missed the mark.......2007-06-13
This book could not hold my interest. I stopped reading after chapter 11.
I love Stella Cameron's books but..........2007-06-04
Target didn't do it for me. I have read all of Ms. Cameron's books and enjoyed every single one. However, Target dragged on...at some point I almost yelled, "get on with it, already!" It needed more editing (spell check) and had a few inconsistencies. It did pick up in the end, though, and provided a satisfying ending. Overall, it was just okay.
suspense.......2007-04-26
When I began to read this novel from the romance section, as a first time reader of Stella Cameron, I expected it to be filled with steamy scenes of love. I was surprisingly delighted to find that it should almost be classified as a suspense novel.
Without revealing too much of the story, the main theme of the novel was the suspenseful plot of hidden identities of 3 teenagers who escaped a horrible tragedy and who grow closer together because of the need of family, protection, and strength. With every turn of the page, you are not sure what could be coming next...or who. The bayou setting just adds to the mystery and the loving relationships that develop are a natural progression in people who have shared tragedy and common experiences.
This story entertained me!.......2007-04-17
This book, like all of Cameron's books, is well written, fast moving and doesn't give much time for breathing between events. Love the characters and the complicated love story. Love Delia, Nick, Sarah and Aurelie--and their struggle to deal with almost overwhelming obstacles. Ms. Cameron is fortunate, she obviously enjoys what she does.

Customer Reviews:
Everything I need to know.......2007-08-23
After killing a peach tree and three cherry trees, I decided I better try to find out what I did wrong.
This book is pointing the error of my ways. It has all I need to know.
The Backyard Orchardist: A Complete guide to Growing Fruit Trees in the Home Garden.......2007-05-12
Great! This book contains essential common sense information for growing fruit trees in a easy to read format.
Growing fruit trees.......2007-04-05
This book exceeded our expectations. We highly recommend it for anyone who wants to grow fruit for their own consumption. Other books we've tried to read were much too technical and always intended for commercial growers. Stella Otto's book is clear, concise, and chock-full of information. We loved it and feel confident we will now be able to better tend our 10 fruit trees.
Read it, but a word of caution........2007-01-01
This book is a great place to get started, and to finish if you live in USDA climate zones 8, 7, 6, ..., 1. But those of us who live in "low chill" winters, and low-heat summers: southern california, mid-to-southern florida, coastal climates with marine layers -- you need to digest this book and read further about what works in your area.
Very Informative.......2006-08-20
I found this book very informative and comprehensive in answering my questions and concerns with my trees and how to care for and protect them. I highly recommend reading this book to others who have equal concerns and interest in the care of fruit trees.
