Book Description

• Exciting medium, new formulations: perfect for crafters at all skill levels
• Award-winning, best-selling author with great crafts credentials
• First book on resin that provides detailed techniques and varied super-appealing projects

Resin jewelry is made from liquid plastic that magically turns solid when a hardener is added. Pretty cool! The popularity of these resins for jewelry making has soared with the introduction of easy-to-mix, low-odor products, ideal for crafters. Now best-selling author Sherri Haab shows how to put the miracle of modern technology to work making necklaces, bangles, bracelets, pins, earrings, and rings. Projects range from simple to sophisticated, from Bakelite-style heart pins to faux amber earrings to glitter gem bracelets, from scrimshaw bracelets to cloisonné pins to transparent resin necklaces backed with gold leaf. Packed with tips on tools, supplies, finishing, and creating special effects, including ideas on combining resins with polymer clay, The Art of Resin Jewelry is a beautiful and practical introduction to an exciting craft.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Safety first.......2007-09-21

You must use protective gear when using resin products but the precautions are worth the results. Sherri shows you how to use epoxy, polyurethane and polyester resins to imbed candy, flowers and found objects to make jewelry elements. You can make imitation amber by including bugs and vegetable matter in resins and make amber's "sun spangles" by mixing in gold or bronze leaf. It's pretty exciting to see how Sherri uses a combination of black polymer clay, very fine glitter, Pearl Ex(tm) powdered pigments and Envirotex Lite® epoxy to make a light-weight cabochon that looks just like dichroic glass.

When using resins, use NIOSH-approved protective gear (respirator and nitrile or butyl gloves) and keep away from food preparation areas. Always read the resin product's Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) prior to using it. When drilling or sanding resin pieces, you must wear a dust mask. Other than standard beading tools and findings, an embossing gun will come in handy to get rid of air bubbles during the resin's drying process. You can use ready-made rubber molds or use Sherri's techniques to make your own molds from an existing piece or your original polymer clay sculpture.

If you already enjoy working with polymer clay, working with resins will expand your creativity and this book will help to get you (safely) started.

4 out of 5 stars Choice of art pieces.......2007-09-09

This book is a wonderful resource for anyone interested in making resin jewlery. Its in depth and as always Sherri Haab explains in detail just "how to" do it. My disappointment is with the pieces of jewlery she chose to create. There are only a few that I would duplicate. That said if you are wanting to learn this medium then buy the book.

4 out of 5 stars Great all-round resin jewellery book.......2007-02-10

I am really happy with this book. It has a great selection of projects and lots of different types of resin jewellery. Lots of pictures. I haven't made anything yet but it seems really easy to follow.

5 out of 5 stars this book is great.......2007-01-10

Sherri Haab can always be relied to to produce great books with funky projects that you actually want to make. Can't fault this one at all - fantastic!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book For Inspiring Artists.......2007-01-10

I am speaking on behalf of my company (Fibreglass & Resin Sales), we sell this book to many customers, although some of my staff have also purchased the book. It has great, handy ideas for those who love their crafts, and even those who are new in the craft world! If you interested in Resin Art, I would recommend this book to get you going!!!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Working with Precious Metal Clay Review.......2007-08-31

Tim McCreight is the PMC guru and this book is almost a text book.

Exceptionally well laid out with the different sections, projects, techniques and tools. As a new user of PMC I have found the book to be a great guide as I work my way through the techniques of PMC.

Very well written and illustrated.

4 out of 5 stars Start with this book .......2007-01-08

I confess straight up to being a McCreight fan so maybe I am biased. However I have found his book to be one of the best to give my students. It is incredibly clear and consice. It is perfect for the person starting out in silver clay. Sure the glossy photos are missing, rather hand drawn step by steps, but you can follow easily. With 50 projects, there is ample opportunity for the beginner to find something that appeals and to gain confidence with this medium. Part Two is fabulous, excellent technical tips on a host of items, rehydrating, extruding, carving, ring sizing, making bails, use of patinas, and loads more. Part Three gives you the added bonus of How to make your own tools - and therefore save a few dollars. Being spiral bound is a bonus, always stays open. I recommend three books to my clay students, this is one of them, ( the other two - CeCe Wire and Sherri Haab.)A must for your library.

1 out of 5 stars Worthless.......2007-01-05

I have never been more dissappointed in a how-to book. All the instructions are drawings that look like they were done by children. There are few photos and they are mostly tiny black and white and fuzzy. This book is not helpful at all. I am sorry I purchased it and don't recommed it for any level of experience. Save your money.

5 out of 5 stars This is probably the number one beginners book out there........2006-03-30

This book is of the style that McCreight has become associated with. For good or bad, Tim's books are either hated or loved. That is just the way it is. This book was published in what could be called the dark ages of the metal clay movement. It is truly a beginners book. In the sense it is for beginners and it was at the beginning of metal clay. It covers one brand of the two major players in the production of precious metal powders in a clay binder/carrier. The projects are simple, small and easy. As they should be for new people and a new medium. I can not judge the projects merit, because as with most things. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. When you open it up it will lay flat on a table. The projecct pictures should be larger. As the PMC title is not onlt a descriptive generic nomenclature along with a trademark. It does cover the basics of working with the clay of both types. The tips are as always good to know. the tools are of the type that can be constructed by anybody with little handywork skills or tools. It touches the surface of a new material and what the possiblities of it holds. I own it.

5 out of 5 stars Very imformative.......2006-03-15

I love this book as a reference, it is written very clearly and easy to understand. Very well organized also. If you are in to PMC I would highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book .......2007-01-04

This is a beautifully photographed book. Shows many wonderful pieces of vintage bakelite jewelry. I can't fault it except to say, I wish it had even more examples of bakelite to look at.

4 out of 5 stars Gorgeous pictures of rare pieces.......2005-02-07

This was the first book on Bakelite jewelry that I ever bought, and the mouthwatering pictures wheted my appetite to start collecting Bakelite jewelry. However, after this luscious introduction, I was in for a big disappointment out in the real world. Most of the stunning pieces in this book have long since been snapped up by collectors, and in the years since I got this book I have rarely found a piece of Bakelite that appears in it. In terms of seeing some of the best of the best, Davidov shows Bakelite jewelry at it's finest. She also does much to enlighten collectors about the Bakelite jewelry industry. Although there is a rudimentary pricing guide, it is completely out of date and is of little use to today's collector. None the less, Bakelite collectors will enjoy this book. It's not a collector's guide. Instead, this beautiful book is a glorious celebration of top of the line vintage Bakelite jewelry, and a guilty pleasure to just thumb through and savor....

5 out of 5 stars Still the premiere book on Bakelite jewelry!.......1998-07-22

The Bakelite Jewelry Book by Davidov and Dawes was publishedin 1988 and it was the first book I bought when I started collectingBakelite jewelry several years ago. Big and beautiful, with wonderful pictures, this book does a great job of showing the variety and personality of this fun jewelry while also educating the reader about the history of Bakelite. Unfortunately, the price guide in the back is now outdated. This book is a visual feast and even though I now have a shelf full of books on bakelite it is still the first book I grab when I want to check on a piece!

5 out of 5 stars Collecting Art Plastic Jewelry: Identification and Price Guide (.......2007-09-17

This book is a must if you are into collecting Art Plastic Jewellery including plastic ,celluloid , bakelite and lucite. There are beautiful large coloured photographs on every page with descriptions and a price guide. Lots of chunky bracelets, dog brooches, mah-jong bracelets, animal pins, fruit jewellery etc. Very useful if you are into collecting vintage and modern plastic jewellery but also just a lovely book to look at!

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating look at today's plastics artisans!.......2005-03-06

Leigh Leshner's "Collecting Art Plastic Jewelry" is a fascinating look at today's plastics artisans. Modern designers like Jackie Weeks, Judith Evans, Jim Foltz and Judy Clarke--excluded from other bakelite and plastic jewelry guides--are well-represented in this clear and interesting book. There are sections on vintage pieces, history and types of plastics as well as the requisite price guide (which seemed more accurate than other guides for this current market...), but it is the photographs and the info on the new generation of artisans that make this book a winner. A must for the serious and the casual collector.

5 out of 5 stars And What a Plastic Collection Leigh Has.......2005-03-03

I own all the books in Leigh Leshner's series and cannot fault Leigh for showing off great photos, great jewels and intense information. Leigh has done an excellent job with all of her books. Cannot wait to see what she has next in her jeweled magic hat. I hightly recommend all of Leigh Leshner's books. She gears them for various types of collections and you surely won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars "Collecting Art Plastic Jewelry" -- Informative.......2005-02-25

"Collecting Art Plastic Jewelry: Identification and Price Guide" by Leigh Leshner is informative for the novice as well as seasoned collector. The author seems to convey a keen balance between old and new plastics to give the reader ample knowledge of both. I particularly liked the price guide; it is a good gauge for individuals new to the market. I thought the photos were very well done. Thank you, Leigh.

5 out of 5 stars Collecting Art Plastic Jewelry is Fantastic!.......2005-02-24

Collecting Art Plastic Jewelry by Leigh Leshner is a wonderful addition to any jewelry collector's library. The pictures are fantastic and very detailed. The book also has information and works by many of the new bakelite artists and the gorgeous photos show their contributions to the artistry and skill of working with bakelite. There are lots of examples of the vintage bakelite and plastics which will excite the experienced collectors. The book also has a identification and price guide to help new collectors with their collecting of this important jewelry art. Great book Leigh--I love it!

5 out of 5 stars SIMPLY FABULOUS.......2006-07-01

There are several things about this book that puts it in a superior catagory. It's not only the photography, which is stunning, but the in depth information throughout the entire book. Different plastics were always a source of confusion for me but the explaination of just what the plastic was with a photo next to it taught me so much.

I agree with John's (reviewer below) assessment of pricing. I believe he was referring to self-serving pricing of which some authors are guilty. These prices are realistic and from what I see in the market place, prices that people are paying. This book has taught me to do my research.

The book is beautiful, well thought out and extremely well written. A must in the library of any serious bakelite or vintage plastic collector.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and useful.......2006-06-29

I bought this book because I wanted to know something more about bangles, which I love and have been collecting for a while. I always wonder if I am being over-charged or "told a tale" about a bracelet from dealers at flea markets I go to or in antique stores. After reading this book, I can ask intelligent questions and have found that I am treated with so much more respect. In addition, the pictures are gorgeous. I actually leave the book out as a coffee table book when I am not using it.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC PLASTIC.......2006-05-02

Finally, a concise book on the identification of all the plastic bangles out there. As a dealer, I am always trying to explain to my customers how to differentiate between one bangle and another. Now I just tell them to buy the book. The pictures alone speak a thousand words.

Would I agree that there is an area of subjectiveness regarding pricing? Absolutely. But there is also a realistic price or perception as to what people see in a piece. In my experience, people are only willing to pay what they believe is a piece's value. Anyone can put a $500 price tag on a Diane Von Furstenberg bracelet, but that doesn't mean that it will sell.

As a dealer, I'd rather my customers have a realistic price guide as opposed to a self-serving "off the charts" price. All in all, I found the book to be helpful, exceptionally well layed out, beautiful in presentation, and worth every penny.

Book Description

Bakelite plastic costume jewelry continues to be one of the hottest collectibles around. Its a retro fashion trend whose time has come...again! Bakelite pins are miniature works of art that are fun to collect. With prices ranging from a few dollars up to thousands for special pieces, a Bakelite pin collector needs to be knowledgeable. Author Karima Parry, a nationally known Bakelite expert, covers the history of Bakelite pins including the evolution of their designs, sections on testing, common decorative techniques, other vintage plastic pins, and how to avoid fakes and reproductions. This book features a landmark chapter on contemporary Bakelite pins made by artists Ron and Ester Shultz, Bruce and Vickie Pantti, and others. The book is lavishly illustrated with over 600 color photos and a clear price guide with every pin. Beautiful to look at, as well as interesting and informative, this book is the definitive guide to Bakelite pins.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Everything about Bakelite Pins....and MORE!.......2005-02-07

As a long time Bakelite jewelry collector who has just about every book ever written about Bakelite, I didn't think there was much more that could be said about Bakelite Pins- but Karima Parry has done it again. This is not another "Hey, look what I've got" book written by a collector just to show off their collection. Only a few of the pins shown in this book are from Parry's own collection. And, like some of the Bakelite jewelry books out there, it isn't a compendium of the finest Bakelite pins in existence- you know, the ones that most collectors are never going to find, or be able to afford. This book shows a range of Bakelite pins, from very simple and affordable, right up to several of those rare showpiece pins that all Bakelite collectors lust after. Bakelite pins are examined from the perspective of their design and craftsmanship, tracing the evolution of both from the late 1920s right up to the present pieces being made by a few modern Bakelite artists like Ron and Ester Shultz and Bruce and Vicki Pantti. Instead of just presenting pin after pin, Parry discusses the different design trends in the early to mid 20th century that influenced Bakelite pin makers, and she offers a unique insight into the pins. But true to form, the author is careful to make this book a useful reference for collectors. Every pin is shown in full color, with pertinent details and a price range, and the pins are well organized by subject. Most of all, this is not just a picture book, or a collector guide. This concise study of Bakelite Pins is a short, beautifully illustrated lesson in art history, as viewed through the micro lens of Bakelite pins.

I was disappointed with the content of this book. I expected to learn about the history of how the Stein's layering process came about. Also, certain popular pin styles were left out completely. The photography is
    beautifully done, however.

Lea Stein Jewelry is a thoroughly researched beautifully presented book. The photography and design of this book is outstanding. There are hundreds of photographs of Lea Stein's wonderful necklaces, pins, rings, earrings and bracelets. I was not aware that aside from jewelry, Lea Stein also created jewelry boxes, dressing table mirrors, cigarette lighter holders and other gorgeous accessories. When I discovered that finally a book about Lea Stein had been published, I ordered it immediately and it has proved to be even better than I hoped. I shall never tire of looking through it.

This is a beautiful book! Vibrant color photos of some of the most classic bakelite jewelry ever made. Also some great, unusual things such as school pencils and charms that are rarely seen. Unfortunately, most of us who buy books like these are not only interested in the photos and descriptions but are very much interested in the price/value guides. The value guide in this book is way too non-specific. It gives price ranges for entire pages (or double spread of pages) without giving estimates for individual items or even groups of items. An example: pages 102 and 103, $600 to $1100. Not the bangles on page 102 and the pins on page 102 - just PAGE 102. For someone looking for a beautiful bakelite jewelry "wishbook", this is it! However, if you're looking for an updated book with a usuable price guide this book falls short.
