Book Description

She was a vision. She was a siren. She was a nightmare. She was dead. Now he needed her to disappear. And he knew just how to make it happen. The Palm Beach elite go to great lengths to protect their own—and their own no longer includes Elena Estes. Once upon a time a child of wealth and privilege, Elena turned her back on that life. Betrayed and disillusioned by those closest to her, she chose the life of an undercover cop, the hunt for justice her own personal passion. Then a tragic, haunting mistake ended her career. Now Elena exists on the fringes of her old life, training horses for a living. But a shocking event is about to draw her back into the painful vortex she’s fought so hard to leave behind.

First she finds the body—a young woman used, murdered, and dumped in a canal. Not just a victim, but a friend. As Elena delves into her dead friend’s secret life, she discovers ties not only to the Russian mob but also to a group of powerful and wealthy Palm Beach bad boys known for giving each other alibis to cover a multitude of sins. A group that includes a man Elena once knew very well—her former fiancé, Bennett Walker, a man she knows has already escaped justice at least once in his life.

Finding her friend’s killer will put Elena at odds with her old life, with her new lover, and with herself. But she is determined to reveal the truth—a truth that will shock Palm Beach society to its core, and could very well get her killed.

5 out of 5 stars Another page turner from Hoag.......2007-09-08

Alibi Man became my alibi to read this book instead of doing something else. This book speeds you through twists and turns like a highway begging for you to reach the climax. Tami knows how to hold your interest and build to that climax and along the way some of the scenes she describes are so vived they are grotesque. Will not reveal plot as that is the story. A fat book with many pages that I finished in less than four days and read at night only for one hour each.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Detective story.......2007-08-21

I had read Dark Horse, the precursor book with the same leading characters and setting as Alibi Man, and found that I just couldn't get into the heroine Elena. I happen to like Tami Hoag's books mainly for her character developments and even though I didn't really like Elena Estes as a character, I still decided to read Alibi man to see if she's developed as a person.

I liked Alibi Man much more than Dark Horse. Elena is still rash but in Alibi Man she is more self reflective and less rash with the general boldness still present. Still set in the Equestrian world, which I find interesting as I know nothing about it, Elena and her "former" on again off again lover Det. Landry work to find out who killed the groom whom Elena works with. Not as hard nosed in Alibi Man as in Dark Horse, Elena helps Det. Landry behind the scenes to find this killer, while at the same time being forced to deal with painful family relationships with her parents and her relationship with Det. Landry, although, he is on the back burner in this book as in the last. I enjoyed that she seemed a lot more vulnerable in this book, which made her seem more real to me. The plot itself was very well done and interesting and it kept my interest.

Alibi Man was a quick (read in one day), easy, and much more pleasant read for me than Dark Horse was. I really love the way Ms. Hoag writes. What I really enjoyed was that Ms. Hoag's usual verbosity was not as present. Much shorter than many of her other books, only 351 pages, she makes her points without rehashing them over and over as she's wont to do in other books. I don't really mind that she usually does re-hash thoughts and feelings of her characters over and over throughout a book, but this was a pleasant change.

4 out of 5 stars Tami Hoag created a terrific story.......2007-08-03

It has been awhile since I have read something by Tami Hoag and I really enjoyed The Alibi Man. I understand that I have been out of the loop with the main character Elena Estes. However, when I finished the book it didn't appear to me that I missed anything from Elena previous adventures, because I thought The Alibi Man stood on its own. Elena has her fair share of knocks and I couldn't help but root for her. The story moves along at a quick pace, with a number of unrealistic scenes that I had trouble with. But still it was an entertaining read and I thought Tami Hoag did a terrific job and I would gladly recommend it to all my friends.

For you Mystery fans that want a refreshing and thrilling mystery with a bit of romance then feast on the novel The Monopoly Factor by Robert L. Saunders. It's a story of corporate deceit, greed and murder and I rooted for Barry and Susan from the time they first met until that climatic ending in the story. I'm enthralled with this author's prose and I highly encourage you to check it out. Have a good read.

5 out of 5 stars Elena Estes should def. have a series!.......2007-07-30

One of the best books I've read in a long time. I received this book Friday and was finished by Sunday night. I could not put this book down, except for my Saturday night fun... Excellent Tami Hoag thriller.

4 out of 5 stars Elena Estes is back!.......2007-07-13

Elena Estes (who I recognize as a character from a previous novel) is back and better than ever. Investigating the death of a co-worker and friend, Elena soon discovers that events from her past, are effecting her present and future. More than anything, Elena wants to solve Irina's death, and having recently broken up with her lover, Detective Landry, she struggles to keep him at arms length while assisting in the investigation. I will not retell the story, or tell you who killed Irina and why (enough reviewers have done that), but I will make a few simple statements. This novel contains everything that you need to make a terrific suspense novel. There were wealthy men (Brody and a host of other interesting characters) who have formed an "Alibi Club" (a bad version of a Good Ole Boy Club, who provide alibis to each other if needed); sexy polo stars (Barbaro)looking for redemption; a grieving and vicious Russian Mobster, Alexi Kulak; a person referred to as a "Freak" (who walks around looking like a circus reject); blackmailers; a victim who is more than she seemed; and a murderer. But what I found to be the most compelling was the character of Elena. You really grow to understand why she has become so jaded, so filled with guilt, and so sad. We understand why she pushes Landry away, but secretly desires what they could have, but what she is too afraid of. Anyway, Elena is a product of her past. We find out that she has left the police force, 3 years ago, because of guilt that she has about causing the death of her partner during a meth bust. The incident left her with physical (she was drug by a truck) and psychological scars (blames herself). And on top of that, her ex-lover/fiance', Bennett Walker (20 years ago), appears to be the number one suspect. Elena remembers all too well how Bennett asked her to be his alibi when he was accused of raping and assaulting a girl, and would it be unreasonable to think that someone who has everything would not kill to protect themselves. And on top of that, he is a member of the Alibi Club. Having escaped punishment for his past deeds, with the help of her estranged/defense attorney father, Elena would like to see him brought to justice if he is guilty.

As the story develops, you learn a lot about Irina, her lovers and her good friend Lizbeth, but you learn even more about Elena, and what makes her what she is....a truth seeker. How all of the injustices she has been a witness to, have shaped who she has become. I would love to read another Elena Estes story to see how her life evolves and what becomes of her relationship with Landry. So, I can tell you with no hesitation to read Alibi Man, I think you will enjoy it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Years of Knowledge in One Neat Package.......2007-07-08

As a Human Performance Technologist, I am constantly running into situations where I need to use facilitating skills. I have acquired such skills and knowledge over years of experience and practice. This book, Facilitating With Ease!," neatly packages the knowledge components required of a Facilitator and provides useful tools to be used in practice. I am planning to use this book with a client in training new facilitators to facilitate discussions of ethical business leadership. I wish I had this book 10 years ago!

5 out of 5 stars COMPREHENSIVE, CLEAR AND CONCISE........2005-02-27

Details core facilitation tools and techniques. Chapters cover: understanding facilitation; facilitation stages; assessing and understanding participants; creating participation; effective decision making; facilitating conflict; meeting management; process tools for facilitators (e.g., visioning, exit surveys, brainstorming) and process designs. This is a well organized 'soup to nuts' reference including worksheets on CD-ROM that can be customized. Comprehensive, clear, and concise.

4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2001-10-16

Companies that embrace work teams quickly discover a basic truth: More teams mean more meetings. Management experts laud the benefits of enlightened teamwork, but they spend much less time dwelling on the often long, sometimes pointless and nearly always inefficient meetings that teams breed. With teams fast becoming a fixture in the corporate world, meeting management, or facilitation, is becoming a critical skill for anyone with executive ambitions. Author Ingrid Bens' definition of a facilitator is quite specific - someone who guides a meeting without actually participating in discussion or decision making - but her book is filled with practical advice that any professional can apply when running a meeting. A host of charts, examples and worksheets (not to mention the accompanying CD) help illustrate her process for steering meetings without controlling or directing the outcome. We [...] recommend this hands-on how-to guide to anyone motivated to minimize the waste of meeting-creep.

5 out of 5 stars Facilitating With Ease!.......2000-11-08

I have had the privilege of participating in workshops taught by Ingrid Bens: this is like having her in your own training room! The information in this book is both relevant and concise. I use the book to lead my facilitation team through all of their group dynamics training. The CD-ROM allows me the freedom to customize the worksheets to meet our needs. This is a great book that I highly recommend to all individuals who work in teams, lead meetings, or need assistance in group dynamics

5 out of 5 stars From one facilitator to another..........2000-07-07

As a failitator of a process using storyboards, I am always looking for new twists on facilitation in general. As a compact, to the point resource on facilitation and basic meeting management, I think Ingrid's is at the top of the list. While, like any such work, you truly gain the value when you attend a workshop, this book is worth the price in things anyone can adapt and use in any organization. You can never become "good enough" at facilitation and I am glad someone referred me to this book. Two thumbs up......Oh, and one other nice thing. Everything in here is to-the-point instruction - no big ego trips with the author's name dropped into war story after war story...

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-07-18

Sean Clancy did a marvelous job with this book. I laughed, I cried (a lot). If anyone followed what happened to Barbaro this book is a must. Thank you Mr. Clancy for writing such a glowing story about this beautiful animal.

5 out of 5 stars A truly wonderful, must-read story.......2007-06-08

This book was beautifully written and I enjoyed every page. Barbaro touched the lives of so many of us and I still feel the sorrow of his tragic injury and ultimate death. What a courageous animal! I also want to give praise to Edgar Prado who wept for Barbaro and probably still does.

This strong, tough as nails jockey has a heart and lots of soul and I admire him tremendously. Barbaro meant much more than a paycheck to Mr. Prado. I am a fan and admirer of this man who felt so much for Barbaro mand who grieved with the rest of the world at his loss.

No praise and no words could pay proper tribute to Dr. Dean Richardson and all the staff who fought so hard to keep Barbaro alive and whose main objective was that he live a life free from pain. What a valient struggle!

It's wonderful knowing there are still professionals who truly care, and human beings who aren't afraid of having a heart and aren't afraid of allowing the world to see it.

5 out of 5 stars Read it Without Crying..........2007-05-13

This is a very well written book of the Barbaro story told with insight and compassion, without being maudlin. Of course when he wrote the book he thought Barbaro would live, as most of us who were rooting for him, did. So the tone is positive and the pictures are worth the price of the book. A great horse and a great story - worth every penny!

5 out of 5 stars Barbaro: A Nation's Love Story.......2007-05-12

What a gift this is. Wonderful pictures and step by step story of this incredible horse. Wouldn't trade it for the world.

5 out of 5 stars A compelling read and especially recommended to horse racing enthusiasts in general.......2007-05-08

Not since the legendary Secretariat has any thoroughbred race horse captured the imagination of the public so swiftly and enthusiastically as Barbaro. His was a story of high achievement over great odds and the promise of a Triple Crown winner - only to suffer a catastrophic racing injury that resulted in the shattering of his right hind leg. "Barbaro: The Horse Who Captured America's Heart" is also the story of a dedicated trainer, Michael Matz, and a veterinary science that brought the cutting edge of medical technology to the service of a badly injured and beloved animal. Profusely illustrated with full color photography throughout, "Barbaro" is a compelling read and especially recommended to horse racing enthusiasts in general, and Barbaro fans in particular.

4 out of 5 stars Made things clear for a true beginner.......2007-05-27

I bought this book because I had ZERO experience with excel, and was lost when my university sent out a tutorial that assumed some basic understanding. This book allows you to go from true Novice to competent excel-user. A good buy.

Even students like the way material is presented in Excel 2003 Personal Trainer (Personal Trainer (O'Reilly)). There are step by step instructions accompanied by a disk that has practice files on it. There are more simple instructions for difficult tasks such as Advanced Filters and writing Macros.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-05-13

This book helped my co-worker a ton and she's completely computer illiterate!! Now she can stop asking me the " how do I" questions.

5 out of 5 stars Great for beginners and advanced users.......2007-02-15

I am an excel power user. I used this book to help me organize a training class for my co-workers, who are all at different skill levels. I picked up some quick tips along the way -- shortcuts that I never took the time to learn before. Neat. This book goes through beginner skills, moderate and advanced skills (macros and pivot tables). The exercises on the CD are very useful. This book is often missing from my desk....

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-01-21

I've been using Excel -- and everything since Supercalc -- almost forever. But I've never had any instruction. This book is a great way to get a better understanding of the hard bits - pivot tables, for example - without having to wade through tedious material on the basics. Probably a great book for beginners as well, judging from how well harder topics are presented.

Book Description

Athlete. Runner. Marathoner. Are these words you wouldn't exactly use to describe yourself? Do you consider yourself too old or too out of shape to run a marathon? But somewhere deep inside have you always admired the people who could reach down and come up with the mental and physical strength to complete such a daunting and rewarding accomplishment? It doesn't have to be somebody else crossing the finish line. You can be a marathoner. The Non-Runner's Marathon Trainer is based on the highly successful marathon class offered by the University of Northern Iowa, which was featured in a Runner's World article titled "Marathoning 101." The class has been offered five times over 10 years, and all but one student finished the marathon. That is approximately 200 students -- all first time marathoners and many with absolutely no running background. This book follows the same 16-week, four-day-a-week workout plan. What makes the success rate of this program so much higher than any other? The special emphasis on the psychological aspects of endurance activities. You don't have to love to run -- you don't even have to like it -- but you have to realize that you are capable of more than you have ever thought possible. One participant in the program explained it like this: "I'm doing this for me -- not for others or the time clock. I just feel better when I run, plus it helps me to cope with things in general. The skills we've learned in this class don't apply just to marathoning -- they apply to life! Just like you never know what the next step in a marathon will bring, so too, you never know what will happen next in life. But if you don't keep going, you're never going to find out. By staying relaxed, centered, and positive you handle just about anything that comes your way." This is marathon running for real people, people with jobs and families and obligations outside of running. The Non-Runner's Marathon Trainer has proven successful for men and women of all ages. Now let it work for you.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Useless as a reference.......2007-08-02

I've just started my training program, and this book seems to provide a realistic and successful training program. My beef is with the organization of the material. It's divided into weekly training guides, with general training information book-ended by pep talks in each chapter. The problem is that the training info is not in any particular order. There is no index. The table of contents does not actually describe the contents of the chapters. For example, if you want to find nutrition information before week six you have to page through the whole book to find it. Like I said, no index and the table of contents for chapter six says only "Physical Preparation," just like every other chapter. It would be worth two more stars if the TOC could muster a simple "Physical Preparation: Nutrition."
Perhaps the book is meant to be read in full before the training program. In that case the pep talks and testimonials are voluminous and a bit mind numbing. It really makes more sense to read these to find support as you progress through the training.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginners.......2007-06-22

I'm scheduled to run my first marathon in October. I've looked at various marathon training programs online and in other books, and so far I like this one the best. The training schedule is 4 days a week, and very manageable. I think it might even be a little easy, but that's a good thing for a beginner. It really is important to acclimate yourself to running to avoid injury. I've been running 5 days a week, and I'm finding problems with shin splints, so 5 days a week might be a bit much.

5 out of 5 stars Focus on running, not on time.......2007-06-13

I love this book. I was not at all concerned about running a fantastic time but just wanted to finish the marathon and this book helped me do it! The chapters are written to make you feel as if you are conversing with the authors. The inspirational stories are written by those who have actually taken the class at UNI. I would recommend this to any beginning runner since most marathon plans start with runners that are comfortable running 3-4 miles but if you aren't up to that level yet there is no plan to get you there. This book provides you with a great way to get started even if you've been a lazy bum for awhile (which I was).

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book for Beginners.......2007-05-31

After reading the reviews of other people who have bought and used this book I took the plunge. I have read a majority of the book and so far it is great. One thing that I have really enjoyed about this book is the way that it motivates. I was running 3 miles every day and did so in reasonable fashion. After reading a few of the chapters my outlook and times have dramatically improved. If you are new to running and are looking for a great training manual, this is your book.

5 out of 5 stars Making Running Easy.......2007-05-31

This book has helped me train for a marathon. It made the training much easier than I ever thought it would be. I never ran more than 3 miles straight in my life, and now I am able to run 14 miles and am still building up!

5 out of 5 stars Thanks guys. .......2007-09-05

I got what I paid for and that makes me happy. My items arrived pretty much in the time frame promise and that makes me happy.

So, thanks guy. It was a pleasure doing business with you.

5 out of 5 stars excellent!.......2007-04-07

This book benefits a lot to the initial trainers who even have no idea of how to deal with the training. The book is both practical and praticable to the trainer's learning how to train others with his/her own training experience. Though there are not enough illustrations in the book, I still strongly recommend the book to beginning trainers.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-01-04

Great source of information for anyone in the health and fitness field. Also a very good tool to prepare you for the ACSM or even other personal trainer certifications. I have read the ACE personal trainer book and this one beats it hands down.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Highly recommended as an NSCA-PT study guide, or reference book........2005-08-07

This is pretty much the only book I've been reading for the past couple of months as I prepared for the NSCA's personal trainer exam. I am fairly sure I passed the exam, and I doubt I could have passed without the help of this book and NSCA's exercise techniques DVD which is sold separately. [Update - I DID pass the exam! :-) ] This 674 text is packed full of information and can not be breezed through Harriet Klausner style.

For the most part, I like the book, both as a study guide for the NSCA-PT exam and as a reference for someone in the fitness industry. Each chapter is written by one or more experts on that area of fitness or nutrition. Since the table of contents is not provided on the product page, I've listed the contents at the end. Most of the content is fairly well written, although it could use some tightening up in spots, or additional clarification in others. Being a visual learner, I appreciate the multitude of illustrations, drawings, and tables, and I can't think of any I didn't find helpful. For example, they don't just tell you what partner-assisted and partner-resisted towing are, they provide photographs of them. They don't just tell you what the barbell grips are, they provide illustrations of four grips. Tables are not just in black and white, but alternate rows have tan or light blue backgrounds, making it easier to read. Information in the tables is detailed, for example table 9.1, Coronary Artery Disease Risk Factor Thresholds from ACSM. Through no fault of the publishers, some of the information in this table is already outdated, as the latest data for hypercholesterolemia uses LDLs at >100 mg/dL (instead of >130 mg/dL) and the low HDLs is considered <40 mg/dL, not <35 mg/dL. That is the only information in the book that I know is out of date. Overall, it's a practical book, both for studying for the exam and as a reference book.

Unfortunately, this book has enough flaws that when combined, knock it down a star:
* Editing - I found scattered typos throughout the book. In addition, in the plyometrics chapter, when I was reading the paragraph titled "Pretraining Evaluation," on page 442, I experienced a deja vous. I had read the exact same paragraph on page 434.
* Study Questions - Many 21st century textbooks are packed with study questions and features to help the student learn and retain the material. Each chapter contains four multiple-choice study questions, which approximate the difficulty of the NSCA exam. That's okay, but I think there should have been more, perhaps 10 per chapter. The four study questions barely scratched the surface in covering the material. In addition, several study questions had typographical errors.
* Some of the material on the exam was not covered in the textbook. Please don't email me about this as it is not ethical for me to share those questions. In my opinion, if the material is important enough to be on the exam, it's important enough to include in the textbook.
*Difficulty of using the index. Throughout my studying and after the exam, there were some things that I know are in the book that I tried to look up-unsuccessfully. I tried several different words or phrases to find a concept, and still couldn't find many of them. For example, they briefly discuss water aerobics in the text, but neither "water aerobics" nor "aquatics" are in the index. I think the index needs to be fleshed out with more words that are likely ways one would phrase a concept.

Despite the flaws, it's a book worth having for the reasons mentioned earlier. After reading the NSCA textbook, I felt much more knowledgeable in certain aspects of fitness compared to when I read the ACE personal trainer manual (the edition used in 1999) or ACSM's Guidelines for Exercise Training and Prescription, 6th ed. These areas include special populations, plyometrics, exercise techniques, and the specifics of putting someone on a weight training program (choosing the exercises, determining reps and weights, progressing the weights), etc.

2 out of 5 stars Only if you have doubts.......2007-08-01

This book will answer all your questions about training your dog but won't teach you much about how to do it.

5 out of 5 stars Great intro to clicker training.......2007-02-19

I've known about clicker training for years now, but I always dismissed it as a valid training method. I didn't see how you could reliably train a dog when you were dependent on a clicker and food treats. After reading this book I've had all my questions answered.

Melissa Alexander fully explains all aspects of clicker training, as well as some of the concepts of operant conditioning. The book is laid out in a Q & A format and each question has a sidebar with related questions to refer to. I found this feature incredibly useful as the questions in the sidebar were nearly always questions that had already popped into my head. She also offers quotes and success stories that are both encouraging and humorous (like the dog who unintentionally learned to put her head in a box instead of her toy). The sections covering reinforcement and punishment was very clear and really helped me to understand why this training method works so well.

While I wouldn't recommend this book as a stand-alone clicker manual (it's mainly about theory; not much on training specific behaviors), it's an excellent book for what it is. Definitely something you should add to your bookshelf if you're new to clicker training.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book.......2007-01-17

I had read a number of books on Clicker Training, all of which were helpful to varying degrees, before I read Melissa Alexander's Click for Joy! As I read Click for Joy!, I realized this would have been the very best book to read first, as it covered all my questions so completely. Of course, it was a great book to read after having read all the other books I've read for the same reason. The way the author has organized the material is very helpful for all kinds of mind sets. Someone who wants to read the book through from A to Z gets great foundation before going onto more techical information, but if you are like me, when I read about something, I tend to have all kinds of questions that I'd like to address right now. Ms. Alexander has organized each page with cross references to more information on particular subjects on that page. The language is easy to understand, as though you are having a personal visit with Melissa. She also has a chapter explaining in detail how to train a number of basic behaviors to perfection... very detailed explanations. After going through these basic behaviors, she explains how to organize your own plan for trainng other behaviors. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in Clicker Training.

I have found Peggy Tilman's book, Clicking with Your Dog, Step-by-Step in Pictures, to be a great companion book to Click for Joy! because it goes into picture detail for many more behaviors beyond the basic behaviors in Melissa Alexander's book. IF a person is limited in book funds and wants to understand clicker training, these are the two books I recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Goof Proof Your Clicking.......2006-08-16

What a great way to see what potential you have for correcting a mistake before you do it. I am training two pups at once. Sure enough, as soon as one of them gets it, the other does too. So, if I make a mistake they will both learn it. This book handles the individuality of each dog and lets you see ways to better your abilities by zeroing in on potential problems before they occur. I am using it with the excellent Clicking with your Dog book and think the set makes a perfect combination for the joy of clickertraining. Also, little hints like what kind of treats to use, alternates to food, etc. make this full of useful surprises. Also, the advice on how to make the behavior "perfect" lets you know how far to push each activity before moving on to the next. Great book!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent training book!.......2006-08-10

This book is excellent in every way. Melissa Alexander writes in a style that is both substantial and understandable and this is one of the most user-friendly books I have ever read.

I am definitely a better clicker trainer as a result of having read this book. From now on when I recommend a book to get started with clicker training, it will be this one.

5 out of 5 stars Well structured and effective.......2007-07-13

I already used it with young people. And it's easy to use, has nice games, and I like the debriefing questions.

What I was looking for.

5 out of 5 stars Great fun!.......2007-06-08

A very valuable resource. It teaches while keeping people in a very good mood.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth the money.......2006-02-19

I especially like the section on Assertiveness which teaches assertiveness without fear and the section on Working with Difficult peers in the workplace. Very appropriate and hard hitting.

3 out of 5 stars Humorous Training Games.......2005-08-18

These games are helpful but not as "quality" as most trainers seek. Good for a springboard but not enough meat.

4 out of 5 stars The Big Book of Humorous Training Games.......2005-07-21

This is a good book in where the humor combined with the training technics help the consultant work many curriculums more easy and with more effectiveness.
