5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC... EASIER THAN 1,2,3.......2007-08-22

This book was exactly what I was looking for. It's easier than taking a class in PhotoShop. The visual layout makes it so easy to learn the software. It walks you through every step and shows the screen so you know exactly what to look for. Even the most computer illiterate person, like myself, can easily master PhotoShop with the help of this book. I see that some of the other reviews say that it is elementary, but that's exactly what I like about it. It isn't a bunch of hi-tech guru speak that confuses the basic understanding. And if you have it open right next to your computer as you walk through all the processes, it is so simple to learn the program. Maybe it's not in depth enough for the experts, but its perfect for me. Highly recommend!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Beginners Guide to a Complex Product.......2003-11-05

If you have ever bought software only to be befuddled by the tombs demonstrate it, this is the series for you.

The book promises that you will read less and learn more. For the visual learner, the full colored screen shots and succinct explanations break 140 Photoshop 7 topics into two-page lessons.

Simple; direct; helpful: What more would you want from an introductory software text?

1 out of 5 stars Waste Of Money!.......2003-10-23

This book didn't teach me anything that I didn't know already. I learnt a lot more by playing around with the software. It doesn't even teach you how to do impressive special effects, like montages or TV lines.

If you have already played around with Photoshop, then you don't need this book! There are better tutorials out there on the internet and they are free!

Save your money!!!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for the Beginner.......2003-03-01

For the bewildered beginner, this book is ideal. There are NO longwinded chapters filled with theory that you have to digest. On the contrary, the entire book is written 'Betty Crocker' style, with a topic no longer than two pages long. Most of the page consists of pictures demonstrating the steps. The actual steps are listed at the bottom of the page. One can quickly learn how to work effectively without feeling like they're enrolled in an academic course.

3 out of 5 stars John Nemerovski MyMac.com Book Review.......2002-12-06

Book Bytes has admired maranGraphics' approach to visual learning for many years. What works best here are specific screen shots in vibrant colors giving clear, concise, detailed instructions for beginning users of Photoshop 7.

This cross-platform book provides specific directions for OS 9, OS X, and Windows whenever necessary. Bravo! It's a multi-OS world out there, publishers and authors. Two-page lesson spreads make valuable use of the highly successful "Teach Yourself Visually" format. Helpful Q&A style tips enhance each lesson.

Turning to pages 82-83, we learn how to "skew or distort a selection" in Photoshop, complete with numbered, bulleted steps. It would take hundreds of words to instruct without comparable impact of the four-panel illustration. Just one example among many from Wooldridge and maranGraphics.

Any gripes? Yes:

* Often items within a screen being targeted visually are too tiny to see clearly if you're not following along while running Photoshop on your computer.

* I'm being picky, but I get tired of seeing the same JPG examples used over and over again: bagels, palm trees, and light bulbs, for example. I understand they are repeated for continuity, but a little more variety would add spice to the imagery. (I do like that lime-green bagel multiple-effects layer project on pages 192-193, though.)

* Teach Yourself Visually Adobe Photoshop 7 is a teaser, making me want to try everything in P7, but then I'll need to dig deeper within a more extensive book. Some beginners will outgrow the book before they finish using its tutorials.

This book is most suited for readers who learn best from a visual presentation, then work on their own to develop more skills. Teach Yourself Visually Adobe Photoshop 7 makes just about everything in the software seem approachable.

WOULD I BUY IT? Yes, to help students who fit the above profile.

WOULD I USE IT IF IT WAS THE ONLY PHOTOSHOP BOOK AVAILABLE: Yes, and then set it aside in favor of PhotoShop's built-in Help application for additional instruction.

DO I RECOMMEND IT? Yes, as mentioned above...

3 out of 5 stars Great for Film, But Way Outdated for Digital.......2007-02-15

Lee Frost covers all the basics in this book. If you're just starting out in photography, this will help you out. But having been written more than 10 years ago, it is simply not relevant anymore for someone shooting digital. He refers to digital cameras as "nearing megapixel resolution" which just seems so silly now. If you're shooting film and you need to know the basics, buy this book. If you, like most people just starting out, are going digital, then there are more recent books, including one by this author, which will better serve your needs.

5 out of 5 stars Hit the spot.......2007-01-10

I bought this book for my niece, a budding photographer.
She has learned a lot in a short time so I would say this book does what it promises very well.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book - Lots of Tips.......2006-06-07

Overall I thought the book was good. It starts at the basics, explaining aperature, film speed, etc. A good overview of all the different types of photography (landscape, portraits, etc) is also included. The only complaint I have is the book is a little dated. The majority of the book covers film cameras, with only a small section on digital cameras. However, I just bought my first Digital SLR and many of the features it has are just like the older film cameras the book describes. So, it was still relevant.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this Book...............2006-05-20

A few weeks ago my digital camera quit working at a very bad time. I had to break out my twenty year old 35mm film camera and use it. I was stunned at the quality that my old Yaschica had over my digital camera. So I bought this wonderful book and never looked back. It is filled with great tips that are easy to understand. Tips on how to use differant lenses, filters and film. Not to mention great flash tips that almost eliminate red eye. My wife and friends are amazed at the quality of some of the pictures that I have taken. Plus digital pictures won't last but a few years stored on disk and a negative is almost forever. So if you want your memories to last a lifetime break out the old 35mm film camera and BUY THIS BOOK!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Teach Yourself Photography.......2006-03-09

Excellent book for beginner photographers or even for persons who would just like to take better family or vacation pictures.

5 out of 5 stars makes it very easy to learn a confusing program.......2007-06-05

I really like the "Teach Yourself Visually" computer books. I have a collection which includes a selection of all the popular "For Dummies" and similar computer guides, and the "Teach Yourself Visually" is by far the easiest for me to understand. The digital photography programs are very hard for me to learn, and this book helped a lot.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent to start with Photoshop !.......2004-09-15

It is the first time I spend the time writing a review for a book on amazon. I decided to do it for TYV Photoshop Elements because of its excellent quality. I tried a few other Photoshop books before and couldn't go further than page 30 because text is definitely not adequate to teach you how to use a software dedicated to imaging. This book is just perfect for beginners like me who want to understand how the various functionalities of the software can be used to realize what they want. You get a double page per function, very clear and precise, easy to read and to understand. Along with this one, I bought The Hidden Power of Photoshop Elements 2 (that I have not started yet) to get into the hairy details...

3 out of 5 stars Fast, Visual Guide.......2004-06-17

Photoelements 2 is a powerful, complex program that is far from intuitive to use. Abode's manual lists the functions of the program but provides little advice as to when to use each function - and this is needed.

Mr. Wooldbridge's book attempts, generally successfully, to provide a simple overview of all the key functions in PE2. The book's main asset is, as the title implies, visual - with screenshots of the different steps. For a visual program a visual guide seems logical to me (I have found the lengthy prose-based books less useful).

The downside? Basic steps are covered, but not more complex, cumulative approaches (however, it can be argued that the book doesn't claim to do this). The photographs used to illustrate each lesson are truly awful - they are simple snapshots. Not one is a worthwhile photograph. This may or may not matter to you. The author illustrates, for example, how to change colors by changing a house's driveway into a hideous, garish color. (Arguably, this might be an asset - you might feel proud that many of your photographs are considerably better than those in used in your guidebook!) When looking for a guidebook, I hope to get exposed to worthwhile artistic photographs that will inspire some creativity. You won't find art here - but you will find the basic building blocks to PE2.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent way to learn Photoshop Elements 2.0.......2003-04-21

I started with the Users Guide that came with the software and couldn't make heads or tails of it- mostly verbal descriptions of visual processes. The "Teach Yourself Visually Photoshop Elements 2.0" made everything clear. It is a wonderful book and learning tool. After you read it (it's a smooth fast read) you can go back to the Users Guide (which is OK once you have a feel for the program) to pick up a few more details, or feel more comfortable with the on-line help or other, less visual, books.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars look at the Transitions palette.......2005-09-12

The book gives you the essential knowledge to quickly ramp up on Premiere 6.5. You learn of the fundamental importance of the transitions palette. It acts as a backbone to your video. One remark by Sengstack is worth repeating. Make the transitions palette full screen. Its elements are an excellent overview of the most important Premiere elements. Like the Clock Dissolve, which lets you dissolve from one image to another. A highly used method.

But the book is more than just a recital of Premiere methods. Equally valuable are the author's suggestions of good usage. Perhaps the main thing to beware is not to use a fancy special effect for its own gee whiz sake. The narrative should always make sense, and within this, you can sparingly use special effects.

4 out of 5 stars good book for beginners.......2003-12-27

If you need to get up and running quickly, this book is for you. It's concise and to the point. Like other books in the 24 Hours series, it is a place to start. Finish it, then start reading the more in depth books on Pemiere and non linear editing.

My only complaint is: the book has black and white illustrations that are small and hard to read.

5 out of 5 stars What a great book.......2003-06-22

This book is exactly what I needed. It goes further than just saying " click this and this then do this " . His explanations are shorts and clear. I really appreciated his movie production and his shooting tips. I think the title should be " Everything you need to realize a good movie ". Althought I wouldn't recommend it for uncle John going to make their vacation video, since there would be too much uneeded information.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect! :-).......2003-03-12

Got me up and running in record time, and does not spend ages on to much detail in the beginning. Also offers those important tips that keeps your production from looking like a beginners, and warns you about the slight bugs and problems with Adobe Premiere and how to solve them. Also asks the important question: Is this logical? Several times and points out the ilogical aspects of Premiere.

4 out of 5 stars Tech-ie's Reference Manual.......2003-02-14

If you've ever wondered what all those hundreds of buttons and do, the ones you've never found a use for, this book will explain it all in great detail. The author dissects Adobe Premiere - in fact, a better title for this book would have been 'Inside Adobe Premiere 6.5'

Teach yourself Premiere in 24 hours - as Einstein once said, Time is relative. If you just bought a digital camcorder and you want to splice some clips together, then move on with life, consider a different book such as Adobe Premiere for Dummies. This book makes a great reference manual, but lacks the basics for beginners. This is targeted more towards the advanced video editor with some past experience.

Video effects add 'spice.' Consider the 'meat.' A few fades, cut-away's, and a touch of transition is all it takes to edit quality raw footage. This book covers video and audio effects in great detail and provides a lot of insight into movie making. He does get a little pompous, so don't let him push you around e.g. A/B editing. This book, as well as Adobe Premiere for Dummies, insist you use single track editing. Don't be intimidated. If you understand Adobe's concept of 'layers' in Photoshop, you will find A/B editing more intuitive and easier to use.

You can use this book for Premiere 6.0, as well as 6.5 - unless you're really big on 'titles'. For authoring DVD's, most authoring programs provide mpeg2 encoding, something to consider before spending the money on the upgrade to 6.5.

This book will focus on the tools and features most relevant to what the average Photoshop beginner/intermediate wants to do, whether it's building graphics for a simple Web page, formatting clip art for a newsletter, or retouching photos from a digital camera.

The visuals are great. There isn't much text to bog you down. Everything is in full color. The one and only problem is that when you exhaust what this book can do for you, you will still need to learn a lot more in order to fully implement Photoshop. If you are a beginner, buy this book first and realize that you will have to buy another book as soon as you are done with it. You might also supplement this book adequately with online tutorials and Photoshop Magazine. If your goals are modest in Photoshop, then this book may do it all for you. My goals, being an artist and using it, were not modest.

5 out of 5 stars Great way to grasp what PhotoShop does!.......2002-01-09

With absolutely no experience with PhotoShop, I tried to read other books to teach it to myself. Especially with a graphics program, seeing it done sure beats reading about it--and this book does it well! Gave me the confidence to use the program.

5 out of 5 stars Great for beginners!.......2001-04-02

If you want to learn the basics of photoshop and do something and get results then this book is for you. I have had photoshop for quite awhile now but chose to use Paint Shop Pro and other programs because they seemed much easier. My old photoshop book (a Dummies Book) would bore or distract me by the time I got to the good stuff. I have learned more about Photoshop in the first few chapters than I have in trying to "read" other books. If you really need to know the ins and outs of Photoshop then maybe another book is better since this book has very little details in the whys of doing something. Most topics take up about two pages each. However, if you want to touch up and play with a few pictures you have scanned or whatever and you dont have time to read then this book is very helpful. This book also helped me better understand and use similar features in other photo editing programs.

Very well written and organized book. Has helped a lot in learning the Photoshop Elements 4 software.

1 out of 5 stars Adobe Photoshop Elements 4 in a Snap.......2006-03-30

Book assumes basic knowledge of layers manipulation which I don't have. Further frustration; several editing procedures which are mentioned as part of the book are only available on the Internet after filling out a registration and market survey. To top it off I could find no such information at the site specified after I went through the aggravation of completing the required registration and survey.

5 out of 5 stars Great Information In a Great Format.......2006-03-04

Simple and easy to understand steps yet not only for a beginner to Photoshop Elements. This will help not only the new user but the intermediate user as well. Great stuff and another wonderful job by Jennifer and Scott Fulton.

5 out of 5 stars Very 'Useable' Information.......2006-02-22

I found it very easy reading.
It's also a quick and easy resource guide to solve any normal question/problems associated w/ Elements. It's written in a very straight forward and easy to understand format. It is simple to zero in on a specific problem, and using the easy to follow guides, it's a SNAP to solve. A very good resource book.

5 out of 5 stars Accessible language to beginners !.......2007-03-28

Teach yourself visually Digital Photography, 3rd edition, might be the book that makes beginners in digital photography jump in the digital technology photo-taking.
I know middle level executives who cling to their film camera because of the learning curve.
There are really TWO PARTS in the book : one on taking the photo and using the camera that takes 113 pages and the second part on processing the photos in the computer that runs from page 114 to page 265.

Here is an idea of the language used : Light and Color on page 26 " All colors within the color spectrum are contained in visible light. The amount of any particular color within the light is determined by its source , and for outdoor light, the time of day. For example, more reddish orange color is seen at sunset when ..."

The book will help you before buying a digital camera and once you have bought such a camera. You can read 2 pages within 15 minutes .

Basic but fundamental.

5 out of 5 stars A great Book to start with.......2006-05-25

This book is basic in its approach to covering digital photography. But the illustrations make it a fun way to learn. Don't be fooled though, the content is powerfull and concise. Its a great book for beginners and those needing a refresher.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money !!!!!.......2004-05-09

This book is practically useless. In order to work on the tutorials, it is necessary to download the images for the lessons from the publisher's website (as stated in the book).
However, most of the images are not there !!!! I made contact with the publisher several times hoping they would correct the problem, but was unsuccessful.
There are lots of other books for learning Photoshop Elements 2---keep looking !!!

4 out of 5 stars I liked this book so much i bought it........2004-02-22

I am a complete novice when it comes to Photoshop. I initally ruled out this book because of the 3 star rating. How wrong i was! I first bought "Create! The No-Nonsense Guide to PE 2." It was a little too brief and left too many questions unanswered. I then turned to my local library, who had this SAMS title available. I checked it out twice before i decided it was a book i would want to reference on a regular basis and bought it. For my money, it's perfect. Carla Rose is an interesting and entertaining writer without being overly chatty or bogging down in too many personal asides. I started on Chapter One, Page One, and worked my way thru. The instructions are clear and didn't overload a newbie with too much information. The only reason i did not give it 5 stars is because of the SAMS website. I was only able to find/download one tutorial. According to the book, there should have been more, and while that was a disappointment, it really had no effect on the ultimate result - namely, i'm now pretty darn proficient in Photoshop Elements, if i do so say so myself. If you don't know what you're doing, get the book. I think you'll enjoy it.

4 out of 5 stars Russ Walkowich MyMac.com Book Review.......2003-02-12

Carla Rose has been involved with photography since she was a young girl and has continued with her interest, expanding into the Macintosh area, and writing more than 24 computer books. Jennifer Fulton has written over 100 computer books for both the education and retail market. Together they have worked to produce a book that will get you up and going with Photoshop Elements 2 in a relatively short time.

Now the idea is not that you sit down and start to read the book, one chapter an hour straight for twenty-four hours. The idea is to provide the reader with enough information that they can then take an hour or two to work with what they've learned from reading the chapter, building their knowledge and confidence levels as they continue on.

Chapter One starts with the basic introduction to PSE 2 for the reader, explaining the Help resources including Tool Tips, Hints Palette, How-To's and the Help Button. Chapter Two guides the reader through the Elements Desktop, through Tools, Shortcuts, Options, Menus and preferences. Each chapter that follows continues to provide the reader with logical basic information for them to follow as they work their way through the program. Starting and Saving, Importing Source Images, Making Selections and Using Layers, Adding Type, Printing Picture and Posting to the Web cover the remaining 8 hours. The reader then works into Simple Corrections (Levels, Contrast, Color, Straightening, Skewing, Cropping/Resizing, Repair Recipes and Tutorials); Photo Rescue (Black-and-White pictures, Color Repairs, Removing/Replacing Objects, Improvement Filters) and the remaining 7 hours cover Creativity (Artistic Filters, Art from Scratch, Composite Images, Going Wild, Creating Background/Textures from Scratch, to name a few)

Each chapter/hour includes a summary, Q & A, a Workshop (Questions and the Answers) and Activities for the reader to put what they've learned to the test. Ms. Rose has even set up that examples of images used in the book can be downloaded from Sams Publishing's main site to work with as part of the Activities section in two of the chapters. While the book is in black and white, the authors have included a full Color Gallery that shows the images in the book as they would appear, including the page number and "hourÓ that the reader would be in. The book is logical, well thought out and is not overwhelming even for the brand new user or beneath a user that is familiar with Photoshop Elements.

4 out of 5 stars This book has the right attitude.......2002-12-09

I just bought this book and really like its approach. When I was looking in the store I checked all of the books for correcting redeye, which I have done quite a bit in Elements. Most of the other books basically tell you how to follow the directions that Elements gives you. This book said something like "OK, that is what Elements tells you, but as you can see it didn't work very well. Here is the way to fix redeye manually." This is the kind of information that I would buy a book for!

1 out of 5 stars Lack of support and missing source images.......2002-11-23

I bought the book hoping I could utilize the source images for the book's exercises. These exercises are suppose to be posted on Sams Publishing Web site. However, there are no download links for this book. I have attempted to contacted Sams and the only response I received was to click on the books imprint page and it will bring you to the download links. If they had tried this themself they would realize that this does not work.
Support for this product is Zero.
