Book Description

The second edition of this thorough reference is an invaluable tool for assessing cosmetic products, addressing both the quality of the product and the effect it has on the skin. Since a product's ultimate purpose is to benefit the skin, it is crucial to have an understanding of how the skin works, how and why a product may or may not penetrate it, and what care individual skin types and conditions may require. It is difficult to discuss product ingredients without correlating product performance to skin function. An expanded section on skin physiology and chemical concepts enables the reader to better understand product performance through a thorough explanation of how chemicals and ingredients interact. The various skin types, conditions, and appropriate ingredients for treatments provide a quick reference to address clients' needs. This enlarged second edition contains over 2,000 ingredients including 200 new and updated entries. Expanded information on antioxidants and their stability, new discussion on aging and sensitive skin, and function of SPF and new sunblock ingredients offering full spectrum sunscreen and sunblock for both UVA and UVB rays has been added.

2 out of 5 stars Overpriced .......2007-09-18

There was very little that I found in this book that I didn't find in other resources on the subject. It's way overpriced for what it delivers.

5 out of 5 stars Milady's Cosmetic Ingredients Dictionary.......2007-06-27

In addition to listing many standard ingredients, this book also lists botanicals which are listed by their English name with other common names listed right after. And they are cross-referenced. A very good brief review of skin physiology, function, components, structures and layers along with product penetration and testing and skin types and conditions enhance the book. Great for newbies or experienced skin care professionals.

4 out of 5 stars Terrific Resource.......2005-10-17

The beauty business is wonderful, really it is. There are only a very few players that are truely dishonest when it comes to ingredients, for instance, "renaming" common ingredients. This book will help everyone keep it straight. As a beauty and lifestyle reporter, I keep it on my desk.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC REFERENCE.......2005-10-10

I am currently studying beauty therapy and this book is my lifesaver! it is great for reference, general knowledge etc!

4 out of 5 stars Not to bad.......2005-09-13

The first few chapters I would call "Skin physiology for dummies", the science is much simplified, so don't expect to learn much here. However, the glossary of cosmetic ingredients is very decent, I would definatelly buy this book as a great reference.

Book Description

Now in its' ninth edition, Milady's Standard Textbook for Professional Estheticians has been thoroughly revised to include the most up-to-date information available today. Written by Joel Gerson, one of the industry's top authorities on skin care, and Alison O'Neil, a leading expert in the medical esthetics arena, this updated text contains all the essential information needed to ensure greater success for students taking the state board examinations. For the first time, this text is presented in full-color, incorporating a brand new, user-friendly four-color design that will help students learn the common links between the concepts and principles of skin care. Over 500 new full-color photographs and illustrations support the text content and include new step-by-step photographs for many of the procedures presented. All new photos have been incorporated in the chapter on skin disorders and diseases, special esthetic procedures, client consultation and skin analysis, and color theory and cosmetic techniques. A running glossary in each chapter helps the student become familiar with the language of skin care, and procedural notes and safety tips help to reinforce concepts. Expanded discussion on safety and sanitation topics reflects changes made in OSHA rulings and decontamination and infection control. Added discussion on advanced topics including AHAs, BHAs, glycolic, and microdermabrasion techniques give students exposure to those skills that will make them more marketable. Milady's Standard Textbook for Professional Estheticians, 9th ed., is the essential textbook for basic esthetics training.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars No Excuses For Milady.......2007-03-12

As this is the ninth edition of what is alledgedly the most widely used text for beginning estheticians, then the persistent use of mediocre-to-poor science is inexcusable. Doesn't the author consult *anyone* in the scientific/medical community before sending this thing off to the printers? It is *not*, for instance, an established fact that vitamin A protects human beings from cancer of any sort. There is certainly data that looks promising, but that's it. And since vitamin K is manufactured in the intestinal tract, why is paper wasted insisting that students, many of them fresh out of high school, should be memorizing the names of the food sources of this abundant nutrient? Many of these kids struggle with the science that *is* relevent to the profession they hope to enter. My husband is a doctor, I'm an RN, and neither of us has ever used the term "non-striated" muscle. It's "smooth" muscle, for crying out loud! And while I'm on the subject of muscles, absolutely none - not one - healthcare professional I'm acquainted with has ever learned anything about the "belly" of the muscle! No matter - 18 year-old kids have to learn what is not required of first-year medical students. Please. Yes, as a basic introductory text it has much to recommend it; all the more reason to get the science right. S.T., RN, Rochester, NY

4 out of 5 stars Better textbook than prior years.......2005-09-29

This is for esthetician students. The information is basic and well organized. The photos sometimes do not follow the text but it reads easily.

4 out of 5 stars This is a good all around Beauty School book.......2005-08-21

Most of the chapters are well written and understandable. I have found some discrepancies in the information, and feel that the book could have been edited a little better. The book explains sanitation but does not go into the correct method of sanitizing all items that one would use during a service. The material is quite dry, and could really use something to get the student excited about the occupation that they have chosen.

"Makeup should be fun, not fascist," celebrity makeup artist Kevyn Aucoin avers in Face Forward, his third book. One of the most adored stylists among fashionistas, entertainment divas, and high-society jet setters, Southern-born Aucoin arrived on the New York fashion scene in the early '80s, a period he ridicules for its '50s-era conservatism and McCarthyist us-against-them values. His career since has been motivated by the feel-good ideals of acceptance, diversity, and self-love, and the vain world of beauty has eagerly participated in his vision. While one may puzzle on how it is he finds fulfillment in an industry known for its superficiality and elitism, Aucoin's words are nonetheless infectious and the touches of his brushes inspired.

Conceived as an exploration of the past, present, and future of beauty, Face Forward is an ingenious showcase of the transformative, creative possibilities of makeup, with portraits of everyone from Julia Roberts to Sharon Stone, Martha Stewart to his mother, Thelma. His crafted visages range from minimal-application makeovers of friends to elaborate re-creations of such Hollywood icons as Audrey Hepburn (Calista Flockhart), James Dean (Gwyneth Paltrow), and Veronica Lake (shockingly, Martha Stewart) and such pop-culture personalities as Cher (socialite Alexandra von Furstenberg) and Siouxsie Sioux (Winona Ryder). The final pages present his ideas for looks to come, such as "Explorer," Mary J. Blige covered in eggplant body makeup with a rainbow of metallic eye shadows over her eyes and thickly glossed red lips; "Floralia," a freckled Lucy Liu resembling a sprite from A Midsummer's Night Dream; and "Venusian de Milo," Sharon Stone as an orange-haired, one-breast-baring sci-fi femme fatale. Throughout, Aucoin augments an already colorful book with step-by-step instruction, chatty commentary on each look and model, and riffs on such topics as friendship, politics (he repeatedly applauds the Clinton Administration for embracing diversity in the '90s), and the environment.

"Appreciating (even highlighting) individuality is one of the great things about makeup," asserts Aucoin, and Face Forward is a dazzling testament to that belief. For those who see the fun of makeup and are eager to experiment with the virtually unlimited possibilities of it, this book is a boon. --Rebecca Wright

2 out of 5 stars A decent reference, many limitations as a how-to, somewhat dated.......2007-09-16

I bought this book years ago, when I first started making soap. It has a wealth of good reference information on different oils, colorants, additives, etc., information that I still refer to occasionally. Unfortunately it's usefulness as a guide is somewhat limited by several things:

1) She is biased against the use of any ingredients of animal origin, especially animal fats. No coverage of the use of animal fats in soap is given at all, and her only excuse is lame, and not backed up any actual science.

2) Her recipes are too large, are overly complicated, and way too superfatted. Plus she recommends the use of GSE, an ingredient whose use as a preservative has been thoroughly discredited.

3) Some of her warnings/cautions are odd, to say the least. Her paranoia of clay, for one, is downright bizarre. Her admonition against pouring raw soap down the drain, in the event of a ruined batch, is utterly nonsensical.

4) The chapter on the chemistry of soap making is too much. She tries to go so in-depth that she's obviously in over her head, to the point that I was embarassed for her when I read it. The information here that would be useful/interesting to soap makers could have been condensed to a couple of pages.

5) She only covers cold process, and then, only cold process where the ingredients are combined at higher temperatures. There's no excuse for only covering the cold process in a "comprehensive" guide, but the fact that she only gives one basic cold process method may be an artifact of the next problem...

6) This book is dated. I started making soap around 2000, and even then people were using stick (aka immersion) blenders to mix their soap. There's no mention of stick blenders at all in this book, and that's a HUGE ommission. There's also no mention of alternative cold process techniques that are very mainstream today; e.g. discount water cold process, and room temperature cold process.

The bottom line is that there are a number of other books on the market that contain much more up-to-date soap making information than this one, not to mention all of the resources available on the internet. This book is still worth checking out, but don't expect it to be what it claims to be.

4 out of 5 stars More information than I needed.......2007-05-31

As a novice soapmaker, I found this book intimidating...far too technical. After reading a more remedial book and making soap a few times, I tried re-reading the book and understood more of it, but still found there was more detail in the book than the average CP soapmaker needs.

5 out of 5 stars soap =maker's companion.......2007-05-13

I really like this resource...
The author is well versed in soap making and shares a lot of information relevant to those with some soapmaking experience and questions.

4 out of 5 stars Good Basic Info...........2007-03-31

This book and the other I purchased in the series (The Natural Soap Book) have good information but I find it a lil unrealistic when it comes to recipes. The recipes she gives are for gigantic batches of soaps. For the beginning soapmakers they are dang near ridiculous in size for batches. I found the book Smart Soapmaking by Anne L. Watson much more geared towards beginning and intermediate soapmakers with much better information including wonderful resources for lye calculators and recipe calculators that you can set the superfat discounts and water % as well. Was much more resourceful to me than these books by cavitch.

5 out of 5 stars Not Just for Newbie Soap Makers.......2007-01-26

Great book for new soapmakers as well as those who have been soaping for awhile. Clear and concise directions guide you through the soap making experience.

5 out of 5 stars In-Depth Information.......2006-10-24

This book is great for understanding how to shape a brow that best suits your face. I believe it is intended for use as a text book in cosmetology and esthetics courses, but it provides great in-depth information for styling your brows. If you're seriously interested in learning what styles and shapes suit your face type this is the book for you. I was thourougly satisfied.

1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2006-10-12

This book was a huge disappointment. It was very basic and very vague. For example, it would tell you to shape the brow to make their face look longer or shorter, but it wouldn't tell you how to shape the brow in order to do that. All the pictures were small, in black and white, and it was hard to see any detail. I kept on reading on, hoping that I was going to get to the good stuff, but the good stuff never came. I truly felt like I learned nothing and it was supposed to be an instructional book. A waste of money. I was debating returning it, but it doesn't seem worth it to go to the post office and have to pay for shipping it back.

5 out of 5 stars The best book ever written on eyebrow design.......2005-01-06

This eyebrow book is the best educational
material on the market.
After you have read the book do your career a favor and
take the test provided with the book.
I personally learned so much from this book and I am a
professional in the field of Permanent Makeup. In my opinion
this is a must read book for anyone in the field of makeup.
This is a book you'll keep in your personal library for years to come.
All we can do for now is wait for the next book from this talented author.

3 out of 5 stars Geared towards professionals .......2007-08-20

This book is definately geared towards the professional makeup artist. I'm an avid Halloween costumer and wanted to try special effects makeup but this book was over my head. The author assumes that you have some basic knowledge of makeup technique and the lack of color photos makes it impossible for the novice to figure out what he's talking about. I'm thinking of purchasing Laura Thudium's makeup book to learn the basics and then hopefully this book will be more useful.

3 out of 5 stars Not very current..........2007-07-18

This was a good book and gave a lot of technical advice and illustration but it didn't help me as much as I was hoping. It's dated-- now we're having to deal with changes in makeup due to Hi-Def, etc. These are not addressed... nor are many other things that I think are relevant to doing makeup for film/tv in 2007.

2 out of 5 stars Only relevant to FX artists.......2007-05-07

Why didn't I listen to the other reviewers? The tiny section on "beauty" makeup is dated and unhelpful.

4 out of 5 stars The Technique .......2006-06-23

The book makes doing eyebrow shaping look easy...and it not only looks easy- by following a few steps it turns out it IS easy. If you want to learn the basics- buy this book. If you want to do a home makeover- go glamorous, sensual, then fun later on - buy this book. If you want to tune your look a bit- get it! I guess I don't have to go on, but if you are like me and need a bit of instruction and cant afford a makeup artist to be at your beckon call- buy this book.

3 out of 5 stars Mostly Black & White Photos!.......2006-02-03

You would think that a book on makeup -- especially at this price -- would contain many more color photographs. After all, successful makeup is dependent upon illusions of color as well as light and shadow.

That said, I did learn a great deal from the book, particularly the chapter on human aging. This is a good book if you are as interested in makeup theory as you are technique.

Good inforamtion if I felt like I could trust it. So many typos and mispelled words, I started to question the accuracy of it.

Book Description

For decades the primary reference for cosmetology licensure, Milady's Standard Textbook of Cosmetology has undergone the most thorough transformation in its history with this new edition. Milady has totally revamped the organization and contents to bring the Standard into the new century. In its contents and art, both of which are new to this edition, the book reflects the changes in salon and spa treatments, procedures, and products. New chapters such as "Life Skills" by Arlene Alpert and "Communicating for Success" by Catherine Frangie start students on the right path, stressing the soft skills that professionals know is the key to success. NAHA award-winner Mary Brunetti also wrote the chapters "Shampooing, Rinsing, and Conditioning" and "Hair Styling." Ruth Roche, another NAHA-award winner, has created a totally new "Haircutting" chapter, complete with step-by-step technicals on the core cuts. The look of the text mirrors the changes in content, with its open feel, contemporary design, and high-quality photography. Having been developed after extensive analysis by educational design experts, the textbook exhibits the most sophisticated methods for relaying information, stimulating thought, aiding comprehension, and enhancing retention. Central to the book's development was the knowledge that learners need to keep engaged through a visual, inviting display when they turn each page, and that steered the direction of the text design and art program.

5 out of 5 stars Milady's Standard Cosmetology Book Rating.......2007-01-03

Good reference book for anyone going through cosmetology training. We purchased the book for my daughter to keep on hand at home since it's the same book used in her class at school. It's very informative and helpful and will be a reference tool once she gets out on her own and needs to refer back to it. I strongly recommend this book for anyone going into the field of cosmetology.

3 out of 5 stars My complaints for local hairstylists.......2006-01-11

For what the book taught hairstylists about cuts for round, and squared faces are totally wrong. If thte hair has to be styled to lift off the forehead, and come forward: All the hairstylists would do is leave bangs to the side of the client's face. Round faces should not have hair on top of hteir head. That is to crop up a spiky hairdo. To place some hair over the ears and cheeks is to make bangs on the side of the client's face. I have no idea what the editor meant by "keep the hair up on one side." I don't think round, and squared faces should have bangs at all.

5 out of 5 stars If you have to take state boards this is the book you will need.......2005-08-21

This book makes certain that you have a good understanding of the material before you take your state boards and this is very important. You probably will not have the same questions on the test, or they may be phrased differently: but the book definatly covers each chapter well!

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Detailed.......2002-07-24

When I was taking Cosmetology back in the 2000-01 school year, they recommended to purchase this version of Milady's Standard Textbook of Cosmetology. They were only available new in Canada and cost [money], and came with the theory book as well. Our teacher also had the old 1996 version of this textbook for sale, used. However, this is a better purchase. There are more pictures and colors, its not as drab as the previous version. I have to disagree with reviewers who said this is not a detailed book, I found it to be quite detailed and informative in its information. The book meant to be used in a classroom setting, where an instructor teachers and elaborates from this book. You cannot read this book and automatically cut hair, that is where the practical aspect of cosmetology comes in, when you are doing it hands on instead of reading. But this is a helpful tool for aspiring apprentices or students in cosmetology, whether you want to learn about Coloring, Perms, whatever the case, this is definately a worthwhile tool to have.

5 out of 5 stars This is the book my Cosmetology School uses (2000 edition).......2001-11-28

I bought the 1996 version of this book in June of 2000 and within one month I was signed up for cosmetology school. Then I got to school and they used the 2000 edition so I was already prepared. For those who think this book doesn't go into detail please realize that this is a textbook and it is part of a series of books for teaching. There are 2 workbooks that go along with this book. One for Theory and one for Practical. I was given a 1990 edition of this book as well by a friend of mine. The most noticable change between the 3 editions is that the 2000 edition has more actual photographs and fewer illustrations. If you are using this book for school study then I do recommend you buy the state board exam review booklet. Then when you have free time you can quiz yourself. Just remember that this book is meant to be used along with an instructor. If you are looking for a haircutting book only then I don't think you want this one. It only has about 12 pictures.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing phtotgraphs of Japanese tattoo work.......2007-06-17

This book is a great reference for tattoo artists (and other artists) or anyone that enjoys the art of Japanese tattooing. It displays full page photographs (including close ups) so you can see the detail and subject matter quite well.

3 out of 5 stars good coffee table book.......2007-05-15

great photography but more of a book for ppl who are interested in tattoos from an artistic perspective. i purchased the book b/c i wanted to use it as a model for my own tattoo art -- for which it was not really that useful. still, i enjoyed looking at the pictures for inspiration.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome photography.......2007-01-30

Good entry into the japanese tattoo world. Great photos and explaination of history.

5 out of 5 stars The Japanese Tattoo.......2005-10-01

This is a visually stimulating book - for both the casual observer, who will probably be horrified at some of the work, and for the Tattoo Collector - who will be inspired to new heights by the glorious array of Classical Japanese Artworks presented herein. Printed on heavy stock with beautiful color separation, this is truly an important reference of the Japanese repertoire.
