As good as they say, but let's correct a misquote..........2007-09-30
New photographers will appreciate the fact that most of Parts I, II, III and VII in this 445-page book, a total of more than 250 pages, is about photography subjects other than digital photography per se. These subjects include sharpness, autofocus, the rule of thirds, using flash, and so on. Understandably, though, experienced film photographers who want to move on to digital photography, or those who already have books on general photography, may see it differently. So I am in sympathy with reviewer "A Photographer, Planet Earth" when he complains "first they want to teach you a little basic photography..." then it's on to "Photoshop tricks".
Readers who want to focus on the "digital" in digital photograpy might want to look at "Complete Digital Photography" by Ben Long and "Digital Photography, Expert Techniques," by Ken Milburn.
Sammon's digital photography book deserves its good reviews, because his obvious enthusiasm for the medium transcends the book's faults, or perhaps what some would call its overly broad approach. There is only one error that Sammon's enthusiasm does not transcend. He misquotes one of the world's greatest photographers, the late Henri Cartier-Bresson, about his philosophy of image-making. Each of Sammon's chapters begins with an italicized quotation. So when you see, at the top of Lesson 15 on page 87, this comment attributed to Cartier-Bresson -- "To me, photography is the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event" -- you may think that is what Cartier-Bresson really said.
But that is not what he said. In the preface to his book "The Decisive Moment," Henri Cartier-Bresson wrote, "To me, photography is the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event as well as of a precise organization of forms that give that event its proper expression."
To get the first half of this quote right, and omit the second half entirely, is to miss the whole point, and in doing so to seriously misinform young people about Cartier-Bresson's actual philosophy. It is a philosophy that the photographer lived for many years as he wandered Europe on foot. The Frenchman's well known work actually does reveal a talent for organizing circles, ovals, arches, and other shapes so as to enhance the meaning of the photograph! What he did in recognizing the meaning of an event and *at the same time* organizing shapes and forms within the frame so as to express that meaning is incredible. Study his photos with his stated philosophy in mind and you will only marvel more. He didn't just teach it; he lived it.
Sammon is an admirer of Cartier-Bresson. That being the case, I hope that in the future he will be more careful how he quotes him.
I'll close with a compliment. Sammon has an enviable rapport with his subjects -- and these include people from all over the world. I admire this quality of Sammon and his book, and I think you will too.
Easy to Read & Understand.......2007-07-19
I've only recently begun shooting pictures digitally. I took a short class on Crime Scene Photography that scratched the surface, but I wanted to learn more. Rick Sammon writes in a very conversational way that makes his book fun to read and easy to understand. This book is great for the beginner and the advanced alike. There are countless tips on general photography as well as editing your photos in PhotoShop. This book is certainly worth the time to read and re-read. I keep it around now as a reference.
An enjoyable but not completely satisfying read........2007-06-12
I'm giving this book four stars based almost solely on Rick Sammon's enthusiasm. He is obviously a person who enjoys what he does and likes interacting with others. His writing was lively enough so I read the book in one afternoon. The bottom line problem with this guide is the same bottom line problem I'm finding in all digital photography guides I've encountered. The first thing they want to do is teach you a little basic photography knowledge and the next thing they do is tell you how to use Photoshop tricks to create "artful photos" that, in effect, minimizes the need for knowledge of basic photography. Photography is more than tricks and "secrets of the pros" and Photoshop is a fine tool for photographers to augment their work. Unfortunately, most digital photography teaching vehicles today emphasize the ghastly and tasteless manipulations in Photoshop and fail to emphasize learning basic camera technique. To Rick Sammon's credit, he does provide a measure of how to use tools available for in-camera control as opposed to relying solely on Photoshop corrections and manipulations in post production. But when the chapters on the various Photoshop tools and manipulations come into play, it's still a lot of ghastly and tasteless trickery that takes center stage.
The higher quality, professional and advanced amateur digital cameras that are available today are so sophisticated, it's difficult to really screw up your pictures if you have a basic grasp of photography and how to use the camera's features. Despite this, a lot of people are screwing up their pictures in post production by relying on photo editing software. Sammon's examples in the Photoshop Elements portions of this book point this out very clearly. The "before Photoshop" photos are often preferable to the "after Photoshop" photos. I'm not speaking of basic operations such as minor color corrections, cropping, sharpening, etc. I'm speaking of the use of filters and borders and the cut-and-paste collages that Sammon often refers to as "artistic" which are, in fact, perfect examples of over-processed pseudo-art.
I'm not really picking on Rick Sammon here. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I've enjoyed Sammon's writing and photography in other publications as well. It's just that we really don't need more people playing around with their computers to create the photographic equivalent of black velvet paintings.
A must read Digital Photography book for everyone.......2007-06-08
I bought this book about 3 months ago . This book as well as its earlier edition changes my concept about digital photography. One thing that I am missing in the 2nd edition is the absence of Adobe photoshop CS2 treatment. I think that would be more attractive option. The approach of Rick Sammon is wonderful. He covers picture for almost all the remote corners of the world, specifically Asian and South American countries. I strongly suggest this book for everyone involved in digital photography.
Enjoyable / Informative Book.......2007-06-08
I attended a seminar by Rick Sammon just a few weeks ago and had to get his book. I'm new in digital photography and his approach is straight forward and entertaining while being very informative. Highly recommended.

The new "bible" on digital outdoor photography!.......2007-04-27
I have been an avid amateur photographer for over 30 years. I am very thankful for having started my photography journey with a "match the needle" manual Canon SLR in the early 1970's, forcing me to learn the dynamics of ISO/speed/aperture. John Shaw, George Lepp, and Art Wolfe were early inspirations for the composition and artistic side of the equation. Many pieces of f2.8 and faster glass later, I have been recently building my Canon 30D system (my 5th digital camera) and hungry for a comprehensive book to complement my past learning experiences and add new tips. Usually this exercise requires multiple books that one pieces together from recent reading memory. Not the case with The BetterPhoto Guide to Digital Nature Photography. Jim's book was EXACTLY what I was looking for. A great refresh to my past learning combined with the new techniques and clear methodologies from Jim's expert experiences. I read this book cover to cover in one sitting - how could I put it down when the next unread page promised to reveal yet another gem I would commit to use? I took 2 pages of notes - many action items for me to follow through with on the prep for and during my next photo experience. I consider this a must-have photographic bible to refer to on a regular basis. Jim assumes the reader is on the path to becoming a professional outdoor photographer. This is a fresh approach. Much more of an apprenticeship style mentoring relationship with the reader. Well done Jim! 5 stars.

Complete Guide to Digital Photography - my opinion.......2007-01-30
While I like this book, and it does include a ton of useful information on various aspects of digital photography, I also have some criticisms. First, if you are not using Photoshop (CTS or Elements), this book will be of little value to you. Two-thirds (2/3) of the book is focused on techniques using Photoshop. Second, I am not a fan of the "every section is a short lesson or tutorial" approach. This often does not allow for in depth coverage of specific topics and can make it difficult to find specific topics. Finally, the CD/ROM included with the book is supposed to be a Tutorial, but is really a PowerPoint of selected chapters + some additional resources. It does not include photographs that are included in the book with before/after focus, which would be better. Overall, I think this book is good for someone who is making the transition from film to digital and/or someone who owns Photoshop and wants to learn more about how to use it.
Great Book for beginners and Experts.......2007-01-25
This is the best book out there for digital photography users. It will teach you how to buy equipment, the basics of computers and digital equipment, how to get started with your new camera, and shooting tips. It has basic info and then advanced techniques. It is a also a great reference book to dive into topics you havent learned yet. I bought 4 other books before this one, and Ricks book is all you will need.
From good to great!.......2006-03-16
This book helped me to go from being a good amateur photographer to a great amateur photographer. Each of the 107 chapters provides a short lesson for you to read and digest, before going out to practice with your own digital camera and computer. It took me about 3 months to finish the book, and a year later I still refer back to it from time to time.
FYI, although the auther uses the professional Photoshop program for around $650, I have been able to do just about everything using the lesser version for $93 (Photoshop Elements, Version 3.0 for Windows). Either way, Photoshop is a wonderful program, and you can always upgrade in the future.
The author provides great examples to help illustrate each of the concepts in the book. His photography is very creative while his writing is fun and personal. However, at the end of the day, what you put into it will definitely be what you get out of it!

A photography class in a book!.......2007-06-04
As the title implies, Langford's Starting Photography is a text for the beginning photographer. Dating back to the mid 1970's, this 5th edition has been updated to reflect the changing landscape of digital photo technology.
The problem with modern digital cameras is that they make too many decisions for you. They are ready to shoot, fresh out of the box! This means that you don't need to learn the principals of photography before venturing out shooting. Unfortunately, this also means that the artistic skills of making a good photograph - things like composition, patterns, leading lines, use of light and color - are also bypassed. The result? A hard-drive collecting many snaps, but very few photos.
For those who don't have the time or money for a photography class, I would recommend this book! Langford's Starting Photography is geared and organized for the complete novice, but is of great benefit for those who have been snapping digitally for years! The first two thirds of the book are dedicated to work behind the lens, while the last of the book teaches the basics of the darkroom (one chapter on film developing, and the remainder on the digital darkroom). This book even comes complete with `homework' in the form of a projects list every few chapters.
I've never picked up an older copy of Langford's Starting Photography, so I can't compare to previous editions, but I found this book to be easy to use and thorough. Michael Langford is British, and it shows in his writing. I found myself reading it in an English voice. The book is heavily illustrated in full-color. A few of the how to graphics were a bit rough (i.e. - sketches of someone holding a camera, with a photo of the camera crudely pasted-in), and being a Mac user, I had an aversion to the books use of Windows screenshots. But on the whole, an excellent `photo class-in-a-book'!

Not enough........2007-07-24
The beginning is very basic, which is good. But after the beginning, I was left saying "and...". There was no more. It went on to other aspects of photography that doesn't really help you with picture taking. It was about troubleshoot and other useless information that if you needed to know, you would just look on your owners manual.
This book is not NEARLY enough to "start photography". I suggest something like Understanding Exposure to get a more detailed look on photography.
Well illustrated and explained........2006-11-08
If you are just starting out on photography, I highly recommend this book. It begins immediately on the first chapter on picture making! For this reason alone, I would give it 5 stars. Here in the first chapter, the authors wasted no time to tell you what makes good pictures: the photographer, not the equipment. They then proceed to explain why the majority of our pictures (at least, the rest of us non-professionals) turn out unflattering despite our best efforts and high-tech cameras.
If you read nothing else but the first chapter alone, I would bet that your photography will already begin to improve. Or if not, the first chapter will at least inspire you to try the suggestions and see the result yourself. In fact, even if all you have is a humble point and shoot film camera, the things they teach in the first chapter are still totally valid, as the principles of good photography remains the same whether you use film or digital.
The next chapters give details about camera operations, how to creatively use camera controls, and another great topic, how to tackle different photographic subjects. Just what I needed! I like the chapter on how to process you own film in black and white. Although I'll probably not dive into it, this chapter gives you good grounding on the grassroots of photography.
Other good stuff inside:
1. Projects at the end of most every chapter. I dare you to do all the project at chapter one and tell me if it will not improve your understanding of what makes a good picture!
2. Information on digital aspect of photography. Although I shoot film slr, I know that one day, I'll want a digital slr so the info on it is nice.
3. All the illustative pictures are ones that can be done by amateurs! In keeping with the beginner's purpose, this is intentional on the part of the authors. If you are looking for award winning photos or famous photographers, you wont find it here. But the pictures in the book are beautiful in their own right and they drive home the points taught.
4. Modest studio lighting you can create yourself! The principles on the very important aspect of light taught here are very revealing to me. The diagram of how to photograph a subject using only your own flash and any old white card to reflect some light is already a good starting point.
However, I am tempted to give this book 4 stars since I felt that despite it's generous information, attractive layout, highly readable text, and wide pages, the authors skimmed the topic on tricky exposure problems. The use of grey cards, spotmeters, and handheld lightmeters to solve these tough light problems were only briefly explained. On the other hand, they provided easily applied solutions to our most common exposure problems. So I give them the benefit of the doubt that such issues correctly belong to advanced photography topics which might only discourage the wobbly beginner if mentioned here. Now that you are aware of it, you will probably do more research on it. Meanwhile, a lot of my pictures are already much improved by the application of the principles in the book alone.
I therefore, highly recommend this book to fellow beginners in photography!
A snap at half the price!.......2001-03-27
For a first in photography you really couldn't ask for more. Michael Langford guides you round the jargon with ease and will soon have you talking like a professional! With the added bonus that you'll actually understand it! He covers everything you'd need to know in an easy to read stlye. Including projects to do easy enough for total beginner or the more serious amatur. You don't need a high tech camera to follow either there is something for everyone. The book only lost one point with me because i felt the chapters weren't well enough defined. Reccommended to all!
A user friendly guide to taking great photo's!.......2001-03-27
I would reccomend this to anyone wishing to start photography or develop their knowledge. Michael Langford guides you through photography jargon and explains digital, APS and SLR cameras with ease. Including projects for practical starting points easy enough for a total beginner with only a disosable camera or professionals with the latest stuff! The book covers using your first camera, lighting, trouble shooting, effects, working indoor and outdoors and briefly about making your own dark room. It is a comprehensible guide which doesn't cost a packet! A definite thumbs up!

Customer Reviews:
It did provide some good values for the SLR camera beginner.......2007-07-16
There were too many books about photography trying to talk about everything. It turned out not so helpful to someone like me who has her first SLR camera and is trying to master the fundamentals and bring out the best value of it. Those books are either covering too many things that you already know as a camera user, or showing the results using different 'sophisticated' gears (not practical in my case) for the best shots and talking too general and brief in how it's done.
This book provided the general tips in blocks of words, I like its format a lot, easy to understand and grasp, brief to the point. Though it also tried to cover everything for different entry level's user, it did provided some values for what I was looking for in the Techniques' session.
I wish there is a book dedicatedly for the readers like me, further in depth, educating how to make use of some build-in mode/functions of the SLR digital camera with a common lens (i.e. Nikon D70 18-70mm) and bring the best result practically (without other expensive gears) under different conditions (strong sunshine, overcast, dim light indoor, people, landscape etc.) while providing comparison for typical good vs. bad settings to demonstrate the points and giving some examples for the easily/commonly made mistakes. So far, I just couldn't find a book like that. I wish someone could help me out, or a new book will come out for the very need.
