Next? I'll second that.......2007-09-20
I bought "NO LYE!" Tuesday and returned it Wednesday. It was not nearly what I expected after all of the rave reviews. The illustrations were limited and the sections on twists was no help at all. I bought "Textured Tresses" today and love it. There is a lot of celebrity name dropping but who cares. It is well written and provides product names, numerous illustrations, detailed how-to's and a salon directory. Also there is a section on picking the right stylist and salon that I found helpful. Don't waste your money on "NO LYE!". No lie.
The Real Deal.......2007-08-29
Excellent book which provided much needed encouragement to go natural. I've been "relaxer free" since April 2006 and now in the process of transitioning from extensions. Thanks Tulani !!
A Comback for the Dyed & Fried.......2007-01-27
This book is outstanding. It is hair therapy for damaged scalps, strands, tresses, locks and otherwise damaged hair with good intentions. Knowledge is power--it discusses the history and culture of our hair, composition, its' entry into the African American mainstream, styles (cornrows, individual braids, extensions, natural hair) treatments, and care for our crown & glory. Thank you, this is a precious gift.
I expected more..........2006-11-10
This book gave good information, but it did not meet my expectations. I expected a lot more information and techniques for me to style my natural hair myself. When I had chemically relaxed hair, I went to 'the shops' only for application of the chemical. I was very accomplished at washing, conditioning, wet-setting or/or wrapping my shoulder hair. I was hoping that this book would give me these types of skills or techniques. The book seems to emphasis (with many pictures)hair styles that one would have to visit a hair shop to obtain. When I checked-out the prices, I was shocked to find that the operaters in my area wanted a minimum of $65 to wash and braid my hair. I learned (from the book) that some operaters actually braid YAK hair into natural curls to give an illusion of length.
I have such sense of freedom, love, and 'me' since I have acknowledged that I was born with 'wash and wear hair.' My man just loves to see my just-washed soft, springy spirals of curls - he says it's the sexiest thing ever.
Less Than Expected.......2006-11-02
Some very basic information provided regarding natural hair. Not what I expected from the book.
Book Description
THE WAY WE WORE takes a unique look back at African American style moments. Utilizing personal photographs, it explores the stylish beginnings of a diverse group of African American tastemarkers, examining a time when some individuals literally pulled it all together; or, for others, a time of trial and error. This is an exploration of African American the fabulous and the faux pas.
Customer Reviews:
Fabulous Evolution of Black Fashion!.......2006-10-11
This book is really great becuase it emphasizes how crucial a role African-American fashion has played over the years. The photographs in the book are nostalgic-- A visual trip down memory lane as I recalled outrageous fashions from the 70's and 80's. I also went to the Black Style Now exhibit at the Museum of the City Of New York, which was equally fabulous. I think the book finally gives credit to the importance of African American fashion from the 1940's onward.
This book is a fashion lover's dream!.......2006-10-10
As an African American woman in the fashion biz, I know how little there is to represent black fashion's history out there. This book is great; it's filled with tons of candid celebrity photos and fabulous fashion. I know I'm buying this for my sister for the holidays.

Customer Reviews:
Very helpful!.......2000-01-12
I am just starting out as a model and I had so many questions. Is modeling for you? was the perfect find. It gave me insight into the modeling business and helped me to understand the steps that are necessary to succeed. I feel much more conffident now that I have read this book. Every aspiring model should read it.
Tells you things other modeling guides don't, like..........1999-10-13
The fact that the majority of today's sucessful black models started at black agencies, and there's a listing of them in this book. It was helpful, but if you're already established as a model, it may seem redundant.
a great book for all models.......1998-02-18
i recommend this book, because it gave me all the information i needed to get started in a modeling career.

Book Description
From head to toe, no other physical attribute for a black woman is as culturally, socially, or politically charged as her hair. Black Hair celebrates the diversity and creativity of black women's hairstyles, from traditional and ceremonial styles to the urban twists and turns of modern styling. Collected stories, poetry, and non-fiction anecdotes pepper this pictorial look at the present and past of black women's crowning glory. Each page is lushly illustrated--from the vintage ads of America's first black female millionaire and black haircare mogul Madame C.J. Walker to the recent campaigns of current haircare giants. In addition, top hairstylists to the stars provide insights into their creative work. Black Hair celebrates hair--from long or short to kinky or bone-straight. No other book is as graphic and beautifully styled as Black Hair, making it not only a wonderful personal keeper but a timeless gift.

Beautiful.......2006-10-22
I bought this several years ago at a large bookstore. It is full of beautiful, engaging, high quality photos and imagery with poetry and writing to enlighten and move you through the pages. Images cover black african hair from about the early 1900's up through the 1990's. A positive and enlightening book to have or give as a gift to women who wear their hair naturally. I don't regret purchasing this book and I never tire of it. (smile)

Rhonda Fleming.......2005-01-29
Lloyd Boston is totally awesome to have written this book. I stumbled upon this book while researching men's hats for a school research thesis. What I found was not only men and their hats, but historical detail about the Black man and his hat and who the man is with and without his headcovering. The sad thing at the time was that I had to return it to the library; but now that someone gave me a gift from Amazon.com, I am now purchasing this reference material, conversation piece This book a must have in my library and collection of fine art.
THANKS LLOYD BOSTON for sharing Men of Color: Fashion, History, and Fundamentals. And Thanks Amazon.com for allowing me to get it at an affordable price.
All I can say is -- WOW!.......2000-06-03
This book is NOT a fashion book as the understated subtitle suggests. Instead, I am looking at a GALLERY of fine Black men throughout the ages with their "fashions" being very secondary.
This book is filled with WONDERFUL color and black and white photos of Black men -- famous and unknown, past and present. This book is monumentally political for it demonstrates why the Black man is loved, hated, feared, hunted, and reverenced throughout the world! This book is a job well-done.
Men of Color - What a find.......2000-05-09
I thought the book was excellent. It artfully combines historical content with practical advice that any African American male can use. I always thought it took a lot of money to look great. But using this book as a guide definitely helped.
A Must Have for All Stylish Men.......2000-04-15
This book is simply amazing. I received the book as a gift from my fiancee and have treasured this book ever since. First, the photographs are amazing, pleasant, and necessary reminders of the way stylish men of color have shaped style and fashion over the years. Second, there is the instructional aspect of the book that covers matters outside of clothing and which I can't say enough about. After reading the section of the book that dealt with hair and skin care, I was motivated to go buy shaving soap and shaving brush and dispense with the shaving gel. Thanks to Lloyd Boston and this book I have had the best shaving experiences of my life. I can't say how necessary this book is for the many black men who go through the drama of ingrown facial hair. I have less drama than most in that department, but I have still seen a remarkable improvement in my skin, as would any man after following the book's advice. The book even arms you with the necessary vocabulary to navigate your way around a men's shop with ease. There is even instructions on how to do the perfect shoe shine! And as Lloyd Boston points out, well-shined shoes are the best complement to any wardrobe. So,to sum up this book, it is NECESSARY! It is necessary for any stylish man and any man who strives to be so. It is more than worth the money.
Men of Color: Fashion, History, Fundamentals.......2000-01-25
After reading and reading and reading Lloyd Boston's book "Men of Color: Fashion, Historyi, Fundamentals", I can honestly say that I LOVE THIS BOOK! It is a source of reference to me when I buy gifts for the special men in my life or when they are unsure of how to buy for themselves. It is a conversation piece with all who enter my home. We reminisce about the pictures and ooh and ahh over beauty held within the pictures. My favorite interview is when Mr. Boston speaks with Jesse Jackson on youth culture and fashion. Thanks to Mr.Boston for the picture of Tyson Beckford and the other fine men!
