As advertised.......2007-10-01
Most of the styles in this book are a bit "edgy" for my more conservative tastes. I was hoping for a few ideas that I could use, but could not. I am passing this book on to my daughter and friends. The best was the wedding dress. It was really quite attractive and I know some young gals who could pull it off. Still looking for a book with some ideas for a more mature crowd.
Inspirational!.......2007-08-24
This T-shirt re-crafting book is fantastic! The projects are fun and most are fairly easy. The author gives clear directions and good step by step drawings. There are many creative ideas; tops, skirts, dresses, bags, pillows and much more. There are many small projects for scraps too. Most of the projects are good for all ages (I'm 43) and could be done even without a sewing machine, although it's much quicker with one. What I really love is that you get more like 300 ideas because she gives at least a couple variations on each project. Hit your local thrift stores and garage sales and even if you can barely sew, you could be wearing an awesome one of a kind skirt for less than $1!
Cool........2007-08-23
This book has many cool and cute ideas. And they are not all shirts. There are skirts, a checkbook cover, and an iPod cover, just to name a few. The directions are very well written, and the diagrams are very helpful. Warning: some of the shirt designs are not age appropriate for younger kids (under age 16 or so). There is, however, something for everyone.
Generation T.......2007-08-15
This book has lots of fun projects. It has many ideas that teens would enjoy. I am making several of the shirts with my daughter. Fun book
Strut the T-shirt catwalk .......2007-08-14
Like most aging runners, over the years, I have collected dozens of T-shirts. I thought about making a quilt, but it turned out to be a bit more labor intensive than I bargain for. Then I found this treasure trove of fun and easy ideas.
I am a craft person, so I have a plethora of projects in various stages of work. And I am always on the lookout for new ideas. Enter Nicolay's book. Okay, so most of the designs are for young women ages 13-25. But, this is where personal creativity kicks in. With a little more material here and a little less tight there, I modified some of the designs, so that even grannies like myself could strut the T-shirt catwalk. What a pleasure this book is. I highly recommend for those learning to sew and for people with limited time. I thoroughly enjoyed playing with the different patterns and designs.

A good guidline for beginner.......2007-07-23
I have started using Illustrator software recently and this book have served a good support for flat sketching the garments for women, men and kidswear. Is also gives tips to prepare portfolio, but you already should know basics of how to use Illustrator programme. It is nicely illustrated book and one can get ideas. But again its a basic book and does not cover all the aspects of flat sketching.
Inspiring and highly informative - excellent for fashion students and the fashion industry!.......2007-05-04
Great book! Even if you are a complete beginner you will find this book an informative and useful resource. It gets you up and running quickly with really simple, step-by-step, illustrated techniques for fashion computing using current software.
In my fashion design studio, we predominatly use CorelDraw, Illustrator and Photoshop, and found this book informative for each of these packages. It covers the basics - how to create flat drawings from vests, skirts, shirts, dresses to pants, and then moves on to producing mood and design boards, visualizing your design ideas using Photoshop. The section on creating a digital portfolio is also vital in todays digital world. Plus it covers womenswear, menswear and childrenswear.
It is well illustrated with great examples of flats, illustrations and fashion presentations from illustrators and designers in the fashion industry and from top fashion schools and universities globally.
dissappointing.......2007-02-27
This book has great pictures of fashion illustrations and is helpful because it gives instructions for 3 different CAD platforms, but as far as giving explicite directions on "how to", I found it lacking in substance. It seems that the really great stuff in the book was still hand drawn, scanned in and manipulated a bit with Photoshop. If you are absolutely brand new to these programs and need help gettting started it might help you. For me, it will be more of a pretty book to look at once in a while rather than a reference for problem solving.
Top Marks!.......2007-01-29
It is fantastic! Top Marks!
By following the easy steps laid out in the chapters, I cannot believe how simple it is to draw and color my flats, scan and manipulate my fashion drawings and then bring it all together to create my presentations in Photoshop.
I use Illustrator and Photoshop primarily at fashion school, and the other books I own do not explain the tools and techniques as simply as this one does...plus the examples are all fashion and textiles based! For the price it's great value.
Highly Recommended Fashion Design CAD Book.......2006-02-10
This book is absolutely fantastic, it is easy to follow and inspiring. It shows simple techniques to create flats and fashion presentations using Illustrator and Photoshop. It even showed me how to create my flats using CorelDRAW. The techniques are simple and relevant and very well explained. It includes inspiring images and artwork by other designers and illustrators. It also explains how to create a digital portfolio. I found it very useful on my Fashion Design CAD course and will continue to use it even when I graduate.
Book Description
In Byzantium two overlapping systems of dress existed: a semiotic one whereby dress was a code for rank and wealth; and a fashion system where dress was based on the desire to look a certain way. Courtiers participated in a semiotic system of dress, but fashion crept into their prescribed outfits; the nobility chose their clothing based primarily on individual taste, but status was encoded within their fashions. This book elucidates secular dress from the eighth to the twelfth centuries through an examination of painted representations, helping the reader to envision an entire society of dressed citizens.

glorious!.......2004-07-28
For anyone who loves color, fabric or handcrafts, this book is like receiving a box of very fine chocolates. There are luscious, colorful and beautifully-textured pieces on every page to inspire your heart and hands. The artists' statements are much more interesting than in many books of this kind, offering interesting glimpses into the various artists' design processes, spiritualities, motivations, working practices and technical approaches. The photographs are clear, evocative and artful, and the graphic design is excellent. This book would be a very good resource--as a visual technique library or source of inspiration--for anyone who enjoys design, handcrafts, color or fiber. Excellent.
The Fiberarts Book of Wearable Art.......2003-04-30
The best collection of Wearable Art I have seen. Inspirational!!! This book has a permanent home in my library.
It's a nice book. . ........2003-01-31
Well done and photographed. But it's not a "sewing" book. I was looking for something with new sewing projects, but this was more a coffee table picture book. I'm not as much into embellishments.
Suggestions for your own creations.......2002-11-11
I first ordered this book as a gift to myself after reading about it in "Threads Magazine". It has indeed been a gift I will use. The designs in this book are from 40 of America's top Wearable artists who share their insiders' secrets with the reader and give the directions to create your own masterpiece. There are many beautiful items in this book that I intend to make, or rather adapt from. I rarely like following someone's specific patterns when creating my wearable art, but I love to see new and exciting techniques and styles. I feel this book gives you some wonderful tools and suggestions. After all wearable art is something one of a kind that no one else could create but you! Buy this book and expand your own horizons!

Felt and felted accessories are hot! Teresa Searle shows how knitted and recycled knitted felt can be transformed into a wide range of unique accessories using simple decorative embroidery techniques and appliqu.
Customer Reviews:
Inspiring!.......2007-01-08
Hurrah, you don't have to knit in order to felt! If you enjoy crafting with recycled wool knitted items, you'll love this new book. The projects are simple and inspiring, colorful and joyful. It transcends ages, inspiring me at 38 and my son at 7. This would be an inexpensive hobby with some reasonable profit potential. Start-up costs are low to none. You need scissors, needle, threads, thimble and ratty old wool sweaters to recycle into wool felt (by washer.) Many of the designs require a sewing machine, though if you were familiar with embroidery, you could handstitch instead.
Book Description
Master embroiderer and world-renowned textile historian Young Yang Chung brings a wealth of new information to light in Silken Threads, to date one of the most authoritative and comprehensive guides to the origins, history, aesthetics, and cultural context of embroidered textiles in East Asia. Lavishly illustrated with photographs of magnificent dragon and bridal robes, rank badges, kimonos, and other gorgeous embroidered textiles, this book is not only an indispensable reference in the field but also a delight to the eye.
The reader will discover in greater detail than ever before the fascinating evolution of the elaborately embroidered rank badge, a crucial element of clothing for all government officials at court in East Asian cultures. Chung's recent findings about Korean and Vietnamese embroidery traditions are also new to this book. The author's many revelations, uncovered through intensive research since the publication of her 1979 book The Art of Oriental Embroidery, should settle longstanding debates among textile scholars. AUTHOR BIO: Young Yang Chung, world-renowned embroiderer, is the author of Abrams' Painting with a Needle. Her 1979 book, The Art of Oriental Embroidery, was the first English-language book devoted to the development of silk embroidery in East Asia. She divides her time between her native Korea and New York. Robert D. Mowry is the Alan J. Dworsky Curator of Chinese Art at the Harvard University Art Museums.

Stunning Beauty.......2006-11-10
I splurged and ordered this book, and am I glad that I did. It was a jaw-dropping feast for the eyes, and well-worth ever penny spent on it.
The photographs are absolutely amazing, the details are brought to light
exceptionally well, and the text illuminates this Asian craft world just
perfectly.
One of the best features of this volume is that one can readily SEE in detail the various works of the needleworker's arts from each timeper-
iod, providing as an added bonus, inspiration for one's own embroidery.
I highly recommend this book, for needleworkers and designers and for
the aficionado of handwork arts.
Textile Treasures - a review by Jocelyn Chatterton........2006-05-03
This comprehensive account of East Asian embroidery is a must for any textile collector. Beautifully illustrated throughout and wonderfully informative it educates and feasts the eye. The photographic details are very clear and provide a good indication of the different textures. There is also a useful, fully comprehensive bibliography encouraging further exploration of this fascinating subject.
Silken Threads reviewed by Judith Rutherford.......2006-03-23
Silken Threads leads the reader through a wonderful journey charting the evolution of the embroidery of the East Asian region.
Dr. Chung apart from being a Master Embroiderer, and probably the only women in the word who has had a Museum named after her in her native Korea, is also a well respected Art Historian. This is not a "how to" book but a serious study of the history and art as it relates to the embroidery of China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam.
It is well illustrated and reflects the many years of study that Dr. Chung has spent researching this absorbing area of study.
Silken Threads reviewed by Marilyn Gardner Hamburger .......2006-03-17
Silken Threads is real winner ! Collectors, Asian Art scholars ,and Costume designers ,both fashion and theater, will find this book an indispensable reference work in the field of East Asian embroidered textile and costume. What this book is NOT is a "how-to" on embroidery.
Dr.Chung gives a comprehensive history of the evolution of East Asian embroidery and the significant contributions it has made to the cultural history of the region. The influence of China and the dissemination of Chinese techniques , motifs and artistic convention on other regions in East Asia are thoroughly discussed. The author examines in depth a wide variety of embroidered costume ,accessories, household furnishings and religious textiles.
Perhaps the most valuable aspect of this book, and there are many,is its pioneering effort in the field of Vietnamese textiles and
costume,a subject largely ignored before this publication .
Silken Threads is a exemplary production of scholarship, beautifully illustrated and completely documented .Dr.Chung's grasp of her subject represents the culmination of many years of extensive research by a leading authority on East Asian embroidered textiles .

My Mom has this book.......2006-07-02
I grew up with this book and I adore it. I've yet to find anything even CLOSE to this book- it's amazing.
There are clear line drawings, four to a page, for each fashion cycle- sometimes as little as 5 years, sometimes a thousand years apart. The shifts and transformation in styles are made clear, and the notes about what colors, fabrics, and cuts were popular are amazing.
This is THE ULTIMATE guide to historical fashion and if it's not reprinted, it's a damn shame.
Have been using it for 35 years.......2005-04-20
NOTHING beats Wilcox's various costume books. They are invaluable references for designers, costumers, teachers and historians. I wish they would reprint them again. I constantly recommend them, especially THE MODE IN COSTUME. And the clear simple line drawings copy and scan better than any others I have ever come across. I would LOVE a digital version of this book.
The Best Reference Around.......1997-11-30
This is an excellent reference for all costumers. There are extensive pictures of garmets, hairstyles, shoes, and textile patterns for every period from early Byzantium to at least the 40's. Although it is (currently) out of print, seek it out at your library or bookstore till they bring it back!

It need color pictures so badly!.......2003-11-14
If you think this book would be a good inspiring source for your Halloween costume or for your kids' school show, think again.
The ideas in this book are good but it has several big problems. First, there are no color pictures. Each entity has a hand drawn illustration for the alternation and a two inches high, whole person figure, very bad quality, black and white picture to show the final result. Since most of the costumes here need at lest two pieces of original clothing of different color and style to combine with, only if you saw a lot of board way show and hopefully remember exactly how the major characters' costumes looked like, you probably will be easily confused by those illustrations. Second, a lot of material she used here is originally costume itself (or quite fancy old-style dress to say the least) but not ordinary cast-off clothing you might think you could find in nowadays closet.
A Great Book For The Beginning Costumer.......2002-05-01
I had my doubts at first when the author said she could assemble a costume with just glue, some seam ripping and little to no sewing. Then I saw the costumes. Wow! I just wish the pics were IN COLOR(hint, hint) so I could fully appreciate them. Now were's my glue gun?;-)
$50 Richer!.......2000-08-02
Even though we had never before made a costume in our lives the book allowed both me and my wife to win a local costume contest. The clear and consise directions saved my life when I had to finish my costume the weekend my wife was out of town. And thanks to Ms Rogers we not only impressed our friends, we're $50 richer!
Costuming Made Easy: How to Make Theatrical Costumes from Ca.......2000-06-04
I thought this book was wonderfully written so even somone like me does not sew well, I can still create a costume to die for. I am always making costumes for something, but this book has really opened my eyes to new innovative ways to create something alot nicer than I would ordinarily make. Thank You Barb for the book, it helped me alot and I am sure I am not the only one.

Absolutely Fantastic! .......2007-03-18
I am a traditional dance dress artist, although not as prolific (or even as expert) as some of those featured in this book. If I could have given more than 5 stars it would receive them. The photos were beautifully clear, although there only one or two photos of some of the featured dresses, they showed the splendor and detail of artistry from the past. I hope this doesn't spawn more artifakes, especially those coming to the US from overseas. This book is a long-awaited dream come true.

Back in 1993, editor-turned-designer Kate Spade made a splash in the fashion world by turning out a small collection of boxy, utilitarian handbags, each elegantly accented with her name stitched in discreet, lowercase letters. As a result, the simplicity and unabashed refinement of the Spade moniker on those Lilliputian labels has come to define the very foundation on which the designer has since built a fashion empire, one that now, in addition to handbags, includes shoes, clothing, and smart home things, all of which embody the Spade formula of timeless style--a seamless merging of cheerful colors, clean shapes, and well-chosen embellishments. Not bad for a Kansas City-born girl who used to comb vintage stores for fun. Having perfected and expertly marketed her own brand of personal style (one that has famously been counterfeited throughout the world), the designer has emerged with an equally elegant trio of books whose topics Spade has become a virtual authority: Style, Occasions, and Manners.
The packaging, as well as the neatly clipped advice found in Style, is as polished and sunny as the pert designer herself. Spade draws pearls of wisdom from fashion greats like Diana Vreeland and Coco Chanel, and also employs the inspiration of iconic films, books, artists, and design movements. The layout and typography, while vibrant, can be overwhelming at times and her suggestions a bit old-fashioned ("
if you have to wiggle into something, assume it won't flatter you."). But Style still stands out as a treasure in itself. From "forever" clothes like full skirts and jewel-neck sweaters to playing around with color combinations and cocktail rings, Spade has captured a place for herself in the modern fashion vernacular. And Style is a suitably chic way to celebrate her arrival. --Christene Barberich
Book Description
A few lucky women have been born with style -- think Diana Vreeland and Jacqueline Onassis -- but for most of us, style is something that comes with time and experience. Above all, style begins with a sense of who you are and your self-confidence. Style comes from opening yourself to the world around you -- to books and movies, art, music, travel, and especially to other people.
In this upbeat and engaging book, designer Kate Spade talks about the many people and experiences that have inspired her. For Kate, movies as varied as The Swimmer and The Red Balloon have influenced her vision of style, as have such places as Mexico (where she and her husband, Andy, vacation each year), Napa Valley, and her hometown of Kansas City.
In the pages of Style, you'll find a large section devoted to the colors Kate most loves and suggestions for combining them. Accessories, which are the backbone of her wardrobe, are given full treatment here, including shoes, handbags, hats, gloves, and jewelry; and a portfolio of Kate's personal favorites from her own closet is showcased. Style in the office, evening style, even ideas for style when you travel and when you play are all featured here. The last
section of Style focuses on maintaining your wardrobe, including tips on organizing your closet, caring for vintage clothes, and keeping your jewelry in good condition.
Style, with 230 watercolor illustrations, is a wonderfully personal and friendly book intended for readers of all ages and style temperaments. If there's one rule Kate espouses, it's that true style comes when you follow your own rules. Moreover, as the writers William Strunk, Jr., and E. B. White once wrote, "To achieve style, begin by affecting none."

Be Simple and True To Yourself.......2007-02-11
This book is a perfect gift for any woman who loves style, fashion, and beauty. kate spade has beautiful watercolor pallets with different color combinations that are sure to put a twist into any woman's closet. The message that she convays is being true to yourself because that is how your personality will come through what you are wearing. The other thing that is great about this book are the comments from her husband Andy who chimes in to give the male perspective, an important factor missing in most style guides.
A Real Keepsake.......2006-10-09
I am a costume designer, ex-fashion editor and for those of you who don't know, Kate has a degree in journalism. Kate Spade was also an editor for a fashion mag and sold half of her company to the Neiman-Saks corp for 34 million dollars just seven years after she launched. This book IS about Kates own inspiration and personal favorites on the subject of color and style. It is not meant to be a step by step guide as much as it is her tid bids of cultual and artistic info to inspire. Outside of the beautiful watercolor images my favorite is how she lists her favorite stylish movies and favorite fine artists. Kate is a true designer, an artist, not a silly talk show TLC show host with no previous training in fashion or style. Her book is creative and feminine. These books are keepsakes.
self indulgent fluff.......2006-03-13
the book should be titled "everyone should have my style". it's just filled with lists of things kate spade likes, in other words all things preppy. the only real style advice are the three or four tidbits that she borrows from real style icons such as d vreeland and c chanel... and you will aready know those... don't bother buying this book and contributing more money to her overpriced designer knock-off company.
Whimsical and Fun.......2006-01-02
I bought Kate Spade's book on Style because I was in the mood. I find it to be charming and light- nothing to get serious over. The water color illustrations are pretty and reminds me of sunny days and daydreams. While I know what I like, it's nice to get fresh ideas from a true designer. She talks about color combinations and collecting items you enjoy. I think she means for fashion to be whimsical and fun- nothing to take too seriously! Some of these reviewers are completley missing the mark! I do not think Kate Spade is thinking about become a famous writer!
Reads like a magazine.......2005-04-17
This book has a layout more like a magazine than a traditional book- each page has short paragraphs, quotes, lists and pretty watercolor illustrations. Kate Spade discusses different things that have influenced her own style- her favorite movies, fashion icons, artwork, music, etc. She also talks a little about her favorite colors and favorite color combinations. There is some info about accessorizing (imagine that!) and jewelry/clothing care. While this is a cute book, there is not much substance to the book. It was an entertaining one-time-read that can be finished in about 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
