Book Description
There are teenage smokers and drinkers. There are those whose despondence reads clearly as they confront the camera with vacant eyes. This, quite simply put, is The Golden Age of Neglect--a classic example of Ed Templeton's work which is deeply anchored in street life and street style, music (rock, punk, and rap), and graphic culture (wall paintings, murals, tags, and graffiti). This is the vision of an artist who crosses the realms of art, sports, sex, drugs, violence, fashion, and youth. A fixture of the Los Angeles skateboarding scene, Ed Templeton has been producing photographs, documenting a real story of his life, international tours, and encounters in the skateboarding world for over 10 years. Fuelled by incredible raw energy, irreverence, and spontaneity, his work is comprised of an extraordinary number of photographs and canvases, as well as a body of graphic work from drawings, sketch books and collages to montages and correspondence. This book is the reprint of the original version, which quickly rose to cult status shortly after its first printing in 2003.
Book Description
If ever there was a defining moment in a career, for renowned body-painting artist Joanne Gair it came when she painted "that suit" on Demi Moore for the cover of Vanity Fair. From creating painted swimsuits on supermodels for Sports Illustrated or making music videos with Madonna, Gair's career allows us to see the human body as a canvas to be transformed and has worked with some of the world's most celebrated personalities to create unforgettable images. During a career spanning over 20 years, she has worked with Elle McPherson, Gillian Anderson, Heidi Klum, Pamela Anderson, Demi Moore, Madonna, Karen Elson, Alek Wek, Carolyn Murphy, Rachel Hunter, and Molly Sims. Among the star photographers whose work is included in this book are Michel Comte, David LaChapelle, Annie Leibovitz, Herb Ritts, Howard Schatz, and Mark Seliger. Joanne Gair is a fixture of the fashion, advertising and music industries. Her collaborations have resulted in thousands of extraordinary photographs from magazines, record covers, music videos, films, and catwalks. Showcased here are 75 of her most iconic images.

The only dust it will collect is diamond.......2007-03-21
An old art, turned new. Only a sprinkle of diamond dust could add more sparkling beauty. Body art often brings definition to a culture and Gair should be proud of her contribution.
Body Painting: Masterpieces by Joanne Gair.......2007-03-09
This book is breathtaking! Using the human figure as a canvas, this is one of the best examples of creativiity, art and photgraphy all in one. A great gift for art lovers, makeup artists, photographers and anyone who appreciates beauty at its finest! Joanne Gair is truly a master of all.
Amazing.......2006-11-22
A must have for every coffee table. Joanne is a true artist, photographer and makeup artist. The industry's best and this book shows it. Her talent is AMAZING!

Visions: Contempoary Male Photography.......2007-05-08
The book has some great photographs all with a good quality for both the execution and the print. Still not up to the 5 stars of any of Paul Freemans books. Bondi Work, Bondi Classic etc but still very enjoyable and well worth the money.
If this is Contemporary Male Photography..........2007-05-03
...we're in trouble! The selection of artists covers the highly salable 20% art/80% pornography ratio. It also illuminates just how derivative contemporary male photography is. Buy a book of Mapplethorpe, Pierre et Gilles, Mark Morrisroe and get the real deal. Or make a donation to an art school. On the upside, the book is well produced and shows artists from a range of countries.
A Bold and Beautiful Collection.......2007-03-21
Bruno Gmünder Verlag Gmbh is a highly regarded publisher of photographic essays, taking more risks than most other production facilities in this country. This very impressive book surveys contemporary photographers whose works emphasize the male nude and contains sixty seven artists from the well known to the emerging and the result is a hefty volume of both black and white and full color images that offers as wide a spectrum of 'visions' as any book to date.
After a Foreword by the always readable and well-informed David Leddick, the book unfolds in sections based solely on the individual photographers fortunate enough to be included in this panorama. The pleasure of this particular book on the male nude is the variety: images range from the hilarious costumed fantasies, to the brutally erotic, to the quietly sensual, to the 'model look', to the beefcake stance. Included in the collection are the very well known photographers Tom Bianchi, Kristen Bjorn, Ed Freeman, Steven Underhill and Kingdom 19 and the works selected form their large repertoires are fine choices indeed.
But it is the pleasure of meeting new ideas from lesser-known photographers that is encouraging: David Vance, Joe Ziolkowski, Roger Nguyen, Troy Phillips are but a few. The artists are from around the world and for those of us familiar with the works of such photographers as Adam Raphael, Norm Yip, Eric Olson, and John Sonsini among others seem like a much-missed exclusion. But not every artist can be included in a volume even of this scope, and the book stands as a first class collection of the many ways the male nude can be celebrated. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, March 07
Pretty sweet.......2007-03-17
The images are pretty sweet. My first male photography book. My friends and I enjoyed checkin' it out. It has quite a few different styles and techniques which my friends and I really liked. Since I'm into photography as well, it gave me some ideas of new ways to shoot.
The Bruno Gmunder Vision.......2007-01-23
In his preface to this quite amazing book Claus Kiessling says that this is the first anthology "coming from the house of Bruno Gmunder, a unique project uniting a variety of styles." David Leddick, well-known and respected for his several collections of male nude photography, also has written a short preface. There are well over 300 photographs included here by sixty-seven artists (in alphabetical order) from around the world-- Germany, the U. S., Canada, Spain, Russia, France, England, Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria, Lebanon and Thailand. Some of the photographers are well-known, having published books or been anthologized before-- Tom Bianchi, Kristen Bjorn, Seva Galkin (in a recent edition of "Blue" magazine), Christopher Makos, Joe Oppedisano, Jeff Palmer, Howard Roffman, James Spada, Steven Underwood, David Vance, Carlos Quiroz, Kingdome 19-- and probably others of whom I'm not familiar. The pages are not numbered and the artists are listed by residence, e-mail address and sometimes their date of birth. A few of the photographs are named in the photo index included at the end of the collection. What the editors have done admirably here is to let the photographs speak for themselves; and they do, loud and clear.
There is an embarrassment of riches here and certainly something for everyone regardless of your interest or fetish. The photographs are in color, in black and white, in focus, out of focus, sharp and grainy. Some of the men are shot in classic poses, other have props running the gamut from masks to ropes, leather, lingerie and designer underwear of course. There are skinheads, an amputee, and men of different races.
Some of my favorite photographs in no particular order are Kristen Bjorn's shot of two nude men standing overlooking Rio de Janiero (I believe), Christopher Makos' six beautiful head shots, Monopoly's erotic "Colt rehearsal," Bruce LaBruce's humorous set-- particularly "Black Sheep," Aaron Cobbett's stylized sailor shot, Jay Diers' "Ty 1" for the beautiful side lighting, Matthias Herrmann for the guts to do those outrageous self-portraits, Matthias Kort for the wonderfully lit "Uwe," Joan Crisol's work, Mark Lynch's "Paul-The Old Warehouse, 1999" for obvious reasons, and the first photograph by Kelly Mink for its great composition. Finally the four photos of Carlos Quiroz-- is he influenced by Edward Weston?-- "Nude LVI," "Nude LXXXI," "Nude LXXXVI" and "Horse" are original beyond description. At first, I was totally convinced I was seeing a rose in the second photograph!
Someone will have to work long and hard to publish a collection of male nude photography better than this beautifully reproduced and printed book.

Customer Reviews:
Great product and service!.......2007-05-10
This book offers an understandable discussion of a complex subject. Recommended!
Taught me a lot.......2007-05-06
I learnt a lot from this book on what is happening out there in the world of photography today, boundaries are being crossed, there actually is a revolutiopn in the arts in general at the moment, which I find out to be much much more exciting than most people think, especially with photography. I happen to be a photographer myself and I strongly suggest this book to people who think they have mastered the subject and thought they had an open mind.....there is still a long way to go and loads of arenas still unexplored unlike what we used to think that it has all been done before but no, this book shows how we are still pretty much at the beginning of our adventure in this subject, we can break down a lot of our old beliefs that were gathering cob webs.
A Great Introduction.......2006-03-09
This book is a great introduction to understanding the world of contemporary photography. I have appreciated how the chapters are set-up as a look into the main branches of contemporary photography. If you are a photographer, it can help you discover more people who are doing work which relates to your work or inspires you. Because it has information about so many different photographers it cannot cover them all as thoroughly as one might like; however, it acts as a wonderful springboard into further research. I have found it very useful in searching for great works of photography.
Almost got it..........2005-09-07
This is a very constipated read. For such a small book, it took me more (a lot more) than the usual. Although I found very interesting the works, and photographers, chosen, it lacks works, and photographers, that will make it a complete reference guide.
It leaves you wanting more, but still good a learning experience.
I'm not at the right photo level to read this and give a fair rating .......2005-08-17
As a follow up of a review in Business week did buy this book which I find good to look at but almost impossible to read as such
Sorry

Artists at Work is the sort of irresistible book that has come along frequently since artists and their working spaces became almost as fascinating as art itself. The first such tome, perhaps, was Brian O'Doherty and Hans Namuth's classic, American Masters: The Voice and the Myth, in which the minds and studios of such giants as Edward Hopper, Willem de Kooning, and Mark Rothko are toured. Artists at Work has an equally illustrious cast: Louise Bourgeois, John Cage, the late Roy Lichtenstein and Joan Mitchell, Terry Winters, Jasper Johns, and, in this context, younger artists like Ross Bleckner, Roni Horn, Philip Taaffe, and Cindy Sherman. Photographer David Seidner visits 20 artists in all, and his pictures are themselves exceedingly artful--balanced, clear, somewhat soulful.
There is a lot to see here--Joan Mitchell's boxes of fat pastels, and her mangled, well-used paint tubes and housepainter's brushes; Terry Winters's glass, flat-bottomed pestles; Richard Serra's cluttered worktable. Artists at Work, however, has the slightly slick look of a fashion project. And, unfortunately, Seidner's brief essays are not illuminating enough. While most are fawning, he is not always kind, mocking Louise Bourgeois with a backhanded, mincing fervor. Some of his observations are irritating for their airiness: "[Brice Marden's] looks and his physique--especially when he has his hair long and wears his black jeans--give him an eternally youthful quality." Others--his continual references to "my good friend," "my dear friend," etc.--make readers appreciate, more than ever, the substantive text Brian O'Doherty offered an earlier generation of artists. --Peggy Moorman
Book Description
Artists at Work provides readers with a rare glimpse into the working studios of twenty of today's most important artists. Seidner beings the readers into the studios, displaying the working space, the tools, and the work-in-progress. For each artist, Seidner includes a striking black and white portrait, as well as color photographs of the studio and his reflections on his personal encounters with the artist.
Among the artists featured are Jasper Johns, John Cage, Roy Lichtenstein, Cindy Sherman, Brice Marden, Richard Serra, and Chuck Close.
Customer Reviews:
Good stuff but missing something.......2004-10-14
Very nice book, well done, cool pictures but I wish I had seen more artists actually at work instead of empty, clean studios. That and the texts that were a bit on teh weak side. Besides that, really cool book, I recommend it.
O.
A Disappointment..........2001-04-11
I was so excited when I stumbled upon this book in my local library; rarely do we get a glimpse into the creative worlds of artists - until they're dead and their studio becomes a museum, for example.
As an artist myself, I found the photographs both beautiful and extremely insightful. Even so, I finished the book feeling disappointed and somewhat cheated. The text was not only poorly written, but the content of it had nothing to do with the artists' studios. Instead, the author used the few introductory paragraphs before each featured artist as a way to name drop and tell us when and how and why he met this or that artist. It was almost too difficult for me to read - here I was looking at these beautiful -and rare- photographs of intimate spaces where some of the greatest minds of the 20th century created what will be their lasting contribution to society, and the text said nothing about them. I would have loved to read more about what it was actually like to be in these spaces - what was surprising, exciting, disturbing, etc about them. It would have given much more meaning to the book as a whole.
More For The Public Than For Artists Themselves.......2001-01-25
I've talked to many buyers of art who believe that if they were to be invited into famous artists' studios, they would be seeing something straight out of the pages of "Architectural Digest." You know, natural wood, soaring spaces, immaculate wood floors, pristine white walls to be hung with dazzling works of art, views of the sea or equivalent and so forth. Nothing could be further from the truth and this book captures that. Although these artists could all afford the best space, their space is as utilitarian as I would expect it to be. The spaces are stark, undecorated, with bare floors, often with paint splattered on them or even gouged. They do have high ceilings but because it makes it better to view and move around their work which is scattered all over the studio. Their tables are utilitarian and used with maybe one chair to sit in; ditto their paint containers and tools. The "view" is what is inside the studio itself as they are in there to look at their own work. Staring at the work can be an important part of the process. The walls are kept light and are simply painted white or even in need of a paint job. Probably over 90% of all artists worldwide could show you space that looked much the same, located in their basements, garages or barns. I don't really see why any artist needs to buy this book but if you have some romantic illusion about artists' studios, and some people do, this book will straighten you out fast!
Beautiful photographs.......2000-03-31
The photographs in this book are beautiful and also revealing about each artist's approach to his/her work. I wish that the text was more elucidating, but it seems the book is more concerned with conveying a sense of each artist's personality rather than a scholarly study of their work. Some might say that it's merely a coffee table book.

If You Love O'Keeffe...........2000-07-08
If you love New Mexico, O'Keeffe or just fine photography this is a book for you. This intimate look at O'Keeffe through text and photos gives us a better look at this complicated artist. The photos by M. Wood are outstanding, as he takes you through how he contacted Ms. O'Keeffe, through the subtle games she and her gardener played. It was easy to see the love of the land that not only Ms. O'Keeffe had, but the same feeling seems to to just pop out of each photogrpah that Mr. Woods shows us.

Philadelphia Murals.......2007-08-16
I love seeing these as I travel around and I thought I had seen all of them how wrong I was, buy the book and see what you have missed out seeing.
It is a great gift to some one new to the city in my view.
Loved it!.......2007-06-05
Beautifully written with gorgeous pictures! A terrific gift or perfect for your coffee table... I had no idea the City's mural arts program was about so much more than art, it is about imroving the lives of the city's youth by beautifying their environment, keeping them off the streets, and providing a constant in often disrupted lives.
Even More Incredible!!!.......2006-12-08
What's even more incredible about this book than the first "Philadelphia Murals" - is that they found even more spectacular murals - enough to fill a second book!!! And the stories that go with these murals are as heart-felt as the murals themselves!!!
Treat yourself to this book - well, both books - it is a present you won't ever regret!!! I wish I could buy them for you - I wish I had enough money to buy them for everyone!!!

Book Description
A Couple of Ways of Doing Something replicates a deluxe limited-edition portfolio whose initial run was only 75 copies. This clothbound edition preserves the luxurious sensibility of the original with 22 extraordinary oversized daguerreotypes printed in rich tritone. Working with daguerreotype master Jerry Spagnoli to conquer the complexities of this venerable process, which yields images of astonishing detail and gravity, Chuck Close photographed many of the same artist-friends who have made regular appearances in his paintings over the years: Laurie Anderson, Lyle Ashton Harris, Cecily Brown, Gregory Crewdson, Carroll Dunham, Ellen Gallagher, Philip Glass, Bob Holman, Elizabeth Murray, Elizabeth Peyton, Andres Serrano, Cindy Sherman, James Siena, Lorna Simpson, Kiki Smith, James Turrell, Robert Wilson, Terry Winters, Lisa Yuskavage and himself. Each image is complemented by a poem on its subject by Bob Holman, the celebrated and widely published New York School poet who originated and hosted the famous Poetry Slams at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe and now runs the Bowery Poetry Club. With the counterpoint of Holman's engaging poetry, the collected work becomes a transfixing group portrait of Close's influential and highly creative circle of friends and colleagues, as well as an exploration of a challenging photographic medium. A traveling exhibition of the work will launch in November 2006 at the Aperture Gallery.

A fine pick for any serious art library holding........2007-03-06
Full-page black and white close-up portrait photos of notable personalities by Chuck Close pair with poems by Bob Holman in an artistic venture which concludes with a revealing interview with the two collaborators in A Couple of Ways of Doing Something. This piece represents the best in the world of text/photo interplays: artistic, striking, and revealing, it both visually and via written word offers some starting portraits and displays the power of collaborative art. A fine pick for any serious art library holding.
One of the most beautiul photography books in recent memory........2007-02-09
Lots of photobooks on the shelf and great images within. What is unique about this one is the layout and design.
With the beauty of these images, and text which takes on its own life and shape, this has become my favorite book of 2006. The print quality is astounding to well represent the technique used in the photographs.Hasn't left the main veiwing area (coffee table) since it arrived.HIghly reccomended
A Couple of Ways of Doing Something.......2007-01-12
Beautiful portraits "in the raw" with comments from the artists'insight.
A beautiful art book.......2006-11-10
Just went to Aperture in New York tonight for the opening of the show and bought a signed copy there. It's a beautiful oversized book to own, the closest I will ever come to own a Chuck Close. The printing and layout of the book is very, very beautiful. The front and back have a black and silver printed portrait on it, I wish I could own a print of those images. I wish more artist would have books in that quality available.
Book Description
Take a striking journey with photographer Paul Clemence through Miami's South Beach, home to some of the world's most extraordinary Art Deco architecture. Highlighting the elements that create and define the Art Deco style, these 64 black-and-white photographs capture the emotion and express the spirit of South Beach. A cross between a fine art photography and a travel book, this collection establishes South Beach's stunning visual identity, showcasing the city's landmark hotels, residential buildings, and dazzling cityscapes. Be amazed at how Clemence captures the drama of sunlight on geometric forms and relates to us the power of architecture. A foreword written by local historian and tour guide Michael Hughes gives insight into the development of South Beach from its early days as a mangrove swamp to its current trend-setting status and the role that Art Deco architecture has played in the city's renewal. Statements from active community members paint a vivid picture of daily life in the city and give readers an understanding of the city's emotional role in the lives of its residents. This book is the perfect souvenir, and a must-have for lovers of South Beach, Art Deco, and fine art. 11" x 8 1/2" 64 b/w photos
Customer Reviews:
The Power of Architecture.......2005-04-25
I've been collecting Mr. Clemence original prints for a few years now and was most delighted to finally see his book. It was during the last Art Basel fair in Miami, when I purchased a beautiful abstract piece by him. A friend then gave me the book which is just brilliant! The transformation South Beach has gone through is shown here in a very interesting way! The photographs zero in on the very creative buildings that fill the city, showing us how good architecture can create an inspiring environment. The book captures that aspect very well, w/ photos that are as original as the buildings! I wish Mr. Clemence would bring his camera to Los Angeles and help us celebrate the great new constructions that are re-shaping our downtown.
Photographic Gem.......2005-04-16
What a delightful surprise this book! As a photo enthusiast I was not expecting much from such a simple , inexpensive book. But, was I wrong! The photos are gorgeous, very skillfully composed! And the light used in a very seductive way. The photos " Delano " and " Light Carving " in particular are real gems. Others, like " Neon Ocean Drive" has a subtle use of contrast that creates a very interesting mood. It's clear that after living in South Beach for so long he definetely knows his subject! And the printing also was another pleasant surprise, comparable to the more costly fine art photo books.Later I found out that Paul Clemence has a thriving photographic career in Miami. I have a feeling we'll still hear a lot about him!
Memories of South Beach.......2004-10-03
Despite what the book description says above this is not much of a travel book, but it is a fine photographic essay. Even though they are black-and-white photographs you will be reminded of the colors of Miami Beach. Frequently the exposures are softly focused with delicate textures. Many of the photos are details and they take in small areas rather than a great expanse of building(s). Most of the building views take in sections of well know structures so you will sometimes need to think about what building you are looking at (they tell you where and what in the back of the book). There are just enough wider views to keep you engrossed; all part of the enjoyment of thumbing through this volume. The introduction is informative and the locals' short pieces add some extra color. If you've spent anytime wandering around South Beach gawking at the buildings this book is for you.
Great memories.......2004-09-14
After moving away from Miami Beach it was great to find this book! It shows some of my favourite places there and in very cool photos. It totally sends me back, I can just see myself walking again on Ocean Dr., enjoying the breeze, the palm trees and the Art Deco. And the little texts with people's view on South Beach definetely reminded me of many conversations I had with the people I met down there. Kudos for the layout too; it is just as stylish as the photos themselves. Great job!

The definitive Vettriano volume.......2007-03-09
I own one of Jack's prints "The Singing Butler", and this book gives great insight into the thought process involved in producing such fine work, as well as many other color prints are to be found within. Jack has produced some of the finest paintings I've ever seen. I paint also, but only seascapes, landscapes, etc., so to view such a variety of excellent work in the Vettriano style is a rare treat for all who purchase this fine coffee table book.

If you like Jack Vettriano, then you should own this one.
You will become the Teller of the Tale..........2006-03-09
Jack Vettriano is a unique observer of the Human Condition. Vettriano's work gives you a picture that tells YOU it's story, it's subtleties lie in your imagination, and when you describe the picture to someone you can't help but become the Storyteller. His use of light, shade and shadow may draw you into a corner of a Pub or Cafe, or onto a sun filled Beach where in either place you may find sadness or joy. Women are frequently the Conquerors and Men their willing subjects. And sometimes they are just mutual partners in enjoying themselves. You can feel their ebb and flow like the tides of the Ocean. Enjoy Vettriano's work like a fine Cigar, a Good Wine or a Fine Repast: you've worked hard and deserve it!
The Best Justice for Vettriano.......2005-08-17
This covers a broad range of his work, I'm very pleased with the size and content. There is barely any text in this book, other than titles of his work and short intros to chapters, the images speak for themselves.
