5 out of 5 stars Cletus is the man.......2001-02-08

I have Cletus as my design teacher at Carnegie Mellon University this year. I have looked at the book, and it is definitely worth using and referring to regularly. The main thing to know is that Cletus has done everything, knows everything and really, he is the end all source of theatre, costume and artistic information and advice. He got through Yale School of Drama Grad program without ever turning in anything late... think about that. Now why would you choose another book?

5 out of 5 stars The only book to cover concept and craft.......1997-02-08

I have used this book as the text in my Costume Design class for years and find it is the only one to my knowledge that covers both the conceptual aspects of costuming for the theatre as well the craft of rendering and construct. It even addresses historical information briefly. I was saddened to hear that the book was out of print. I am hoping a new edition will be out soon

3 out of 5 stars Good book for people just starting to look after their apperance.......2007-07-16

    Its too broad
If you are just beggining to think about or change you apperance then this book id for you.
If you are well and truly in the know how with how you look and what you can and can not wear then this book is NOT for you

This book covers the general speal on apperances counta and professional presence.
It goes over broadly traditional business dress, business casual dress, and plus sized professionals.
its good because it has pictures scattered through out. Over all it is a good book if you are just beggining to change your apperance.

I would wait until it goes down in price however as I dont think it is a fantastic ROI.

3 out of 5 stars Okay, but nothing new here..........2002-05-08

It seems that in our ever-increasingly casual society, we have lost some of our common sense when dressing for the office. This book has no surprises - there are no hidden secrets for compiling a work wardrobe - if we put a bit of thought into it, I'm sure most people could determine on their own that belly tops, sandals, frayed jeans, see-through blouses and poor grooming are potentially career-limiting moves.

The information in this book is pretty basic. Save your money - you can probably get this quality of advice from Mom - for free.

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate guide to looking your best..........2001-07-07

If you are looking for a comprehensive guide to making a positive impact through appearance, this is your book. I am a recruiter with a Fortune 100 company in the US, and a professional image consultant recommended this book to me when I originally began my position. As a person who was looking for solid guidelines around professional dressing, as well as a reference for others who are looking to improve their appearance, I have found no other book to be comparable.

There are many aspects which make this book such an important resource for professionals:

      1. The author provides specific guidelines around what items should be in a professional wardrobe, even going as far as to outline what quantities are particularly helpful of each piece of clothing.

      2. The book is filled with "before and after" pictures, which allow the reader to see first-hand how the author's recommendations can make a startling appearance alteration.

      3. To reflect the variety of workplace formality levels, there are six levels of workplace dress covered in the chapters. For those people who work for companies that have never successfully defined "Casual Friday", this book gives a lot of great hints of how to dress casual but still remain professional.

      4. Two separate chapters outline accessories and generic grooming guidelines, and I have only found those hints in this particular guideline book.

      5. For people looking to improve their wardrobe on a limited budget or a first job out of school, the author does not suggest spending a fortune on designer clothing. Rather, she suggests some key pieces to acquire first, and then others that can be obtained after your finances begin to improve.

Overall, I see the negative impact every day in my position from candidates who do not make the extra effort to go from "dressing up" to "looking professional". I strongly suggest that you make the $15 investment in this book, since it could help you to acquire the high paying career of your dreams!

5 out of 5 stars An essential part of a working wardrobe........2001-05-24

This book is an excellent guide to dressing for the workplace regardless of where you work. I especially liked the sections on business casual (for both men and women). This section helped me to see that, though I am a manager in my firm, I was dressing like the delivery man. There are so many options for dressing these days and dress has become so casual that we lose sight of the impact that our clothing has on others and the subtle signals we send. The authors do an excellent job of demonstrating how important dress is, especially for women. And, it doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg to dress well, it just takes conscious buying and this book as your guide. If you feel like you are not making the impact at work and maybe in your life that you would like to make, get this book. Perhaps your appearance is sending a different message.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a book to show you how to look successful!.......2001-04-20

As a young woman entering the workforce, I recognized the need to make a strong first impression. What I lacked was the concrete rules to pull this off. This book is outstanding! Given to me as a present, it will surely serve as my dressing bible for years to come. I was especially helped by the dress/grooming guidelines given for specific occasions and the tips for creating a more polished overall look.

Just be forewarned that the women's photos show fashions which are about five years out of style, but the overall ideas are still applicable to everyday life. Men's fashions are a lot more constant so their section is still current.

5 out of 5 stars Success is Yours in 30 Seconds--With This Book!.......2000-02-15

I am currently beginning my second career and needed the Zero to 60 information, now, to level the playing field. You may think, gee, this guy should know all the rules--but my first career was 25 years in the military. Susan Bixler and Nancy Nix-Rice have me confident that when I walk into the interview, I will have the external factors covered (the first 30 seconds)--they even give you hints on how posture, speak, and express the internal you--your knowledge, skills, and ability. I notice people much more now--I look for the suit and tie color, suit make, belts, shoe style, etc., to see the type client the individual is playing up or down to. If you're at all uncertain--this is your next book--you will not be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Things my mother tried to tell me........2006-09-23

As a former clothing buyer spending all of my work time selecting, presenting, and advertising the latest fashions I now wish I had Sherry's book to impress upon me personally how very important MY dress was to my success. She has impressed me with her convincing argument that although what you say is important, how you say it via dress is about 55% of that impression. I loved her real life, before and after stories which has left me paying much more attention to my new leisure image. Thanks Sherry!

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-05-19

I re-read this book again and realized how lazy I had gotten on my dress. I went through my closet again and anything that did not wow me, I through out. The last couple of months I have followed the guidelines of this book and have been amazed the way I am treated differently at work. My boss now includes me on meetings, that I never attended before and has given me a lot more responsibility. I went from sundresses and sandals to a much more professional dress and the results have been amazing.
Thank you for this book, it has changed my life.

4 out of 5 stars Dress for Success.......2005-07-19

With "Business Casual" being the norm now in what to wear to the office, this book is great at giving you insight on how to dress for success at the workplace in a business casual environment. Filled with lots of helpful tips and how to "get noticed" at work by those who matter!!

5 out of 5 stars Very interesting to put to the test.......2005-05-20

I'm more of a "tomboy," who like to dress comfortably and casually. I work for a corporation that allows this and have worn cargo shorts, short sleeved shirts, and other very casual attire to the workplace.

When my company went through a shakeup (that eventually resulted with many employees being cut), I started to implement much of the advice from this book. Suddenly, though I had always been overlooked, I was noticed by management and was actually asked to apply for a more senior position.

In response to the person who says that a person in a low-level position can't benefit from _Casual Power_, I would say that it is not true. I'm in a completely entry-level position at a customer-service oriented phone call center. According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, almost 2 million workers in America have a similar position. How are you going to stand out if you are one of these 2 million? Despite my entry-level income, I was able to afford better clothing at discount stores such as Target or by shopping online.

In addition, this book even has advice as to how to "power up" your look if you're stuck in a "work uniform" such as those worn in fast food or retail locations. It is for people at all levels in the work force.

From Joe Catal. Author of the book "Telesales Tips From The Trenches". As a national sales trainer, this book is a must for anyone who wants to get ahead at the job and their career. The majority of sales people I train don't realize how they're destroying their own success by the way they dress. This book will teach you exactly what you need to learn to have the image you want/need to succeed. One of the best books I've ever read in my life. Get it, you won't be disappointed.
      Joe Catal.

P.S. Be prepared to be beat up a little. This isn't a cutsy book. It's rough and to the point. I loved it!

I bought this book out of curiousity, knowing nothing about it except for the short blurb on Amazon. I love it! It set me off on a whole series of mixed media and machine embroidery pieces using circles. I keep it close at hand in my studio and when I feel the Muse is taking an extended coffee break, I dip into it. It taught me to look at the world around me in a different way and I learned a lot of circle related trivia at the same time. It has photographs of everything round from crop circles to man hole covers to logos and everything in between. Truly fascinating!

        Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars This book is pure "crap".......2005-05-16

I should of paid more attention to the other reviews of this book before making my buying decision. My copy as well ended up in the garbage, where it belongs. Not only is the author inaccurate, most of the chapters are redundant; cut and paste statements. The individual that wrote this book should consider a new profession, and stop writing books. Needless to say, it deserves less than a 1 star. I am so mad at myself for wasting my time and money on this piece of garbage.

3 out of 5 stars Would have been better with photos.......2004-12-17

There are some good pointers in this book but I would have liked to seen photos and more visual examples.

        1 out of 5 stars Lacking depth.......2002-03-05

I am a firm believer in ongoing personal development, so I have continued to read and grow my perspective. Your Executive Image looked interesting because of attention given to clothing, space, gestures, etc...

Then I read it. Not all of it, but as much as I could before I realized this was a waste of time. For instance, the entire posture chapter could have been replaced with a single line: Posture is important as it conveys confidence or insecurity... The rest of the chapter reinforced this one point. Twenty minutes of time for a thirty-second concept. In some chapters, I didn't even see a worthwhile thirty-second concept (like the chapter on space).

Money could have been better spent elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Use Of Time.......2001-07-21

This book continues all the sound advice I have received from my parents while I was growing up. The material contained in this book is an excellent reference for any person at any level of employment. I have been able to easily relate parts of the book to past experiences.

5 out of 5 stars Getting To The Top.......2001-07-20

If a business minded individual wants to successfully make it to the top of the corporate ladder, then this book is a must. The author explains in great detail exactly what it takes to achieve "Your Executive Image." To keep and maintain employment the right image is a must and the author takes you there and keeps you there. I give this book as a gift to all of my friends.

          Book Description

What kinds of things do fashion and clothing say about us? What does it mean to wear Gap or Gaultier, Milletts or Moschino? Are there any real differences between Hip-Hop style and Punk anti-styles? In this fully revised and updated edition, Malcolm Barnard introduces fashion and clothing as ways of communicating and challenging class, gender, and sexual and social identities.

Drawing on a range of theoretical approaches from Barthes and Baudrillard to Marxist, psychoanalytic and feminist theory, Barnard addresses the ambivalent status of fashion in contemporary culture. He looks at the producers, consumers and critics of fashion, exploring the tensions between haute couture and high culture, and asking how meanings are generated, and by whom.

Examining concepts such as culture, meaning, class, gender, reproduction and resistance, Barnard demonstrates that fashion is not an innocent form of communication, and uncovers the ways in which clothing can be used both to create and contest identities.
