Product Description

Music fans who grew up with Rock and Roll in Cleveland remember a golden age. We were young, so was the music, and the sense of freedom and excitement the Rock and Roll scene delivered was electric. There were so many great clubs, like the Agora, where every big band seemed to break in the 1970s. The trendsetting radio stations, from A.M.'s WIXY 1260 to F.M.'s groundbreaking "Home of the Buzzard", WMMS. And all those memorable shows. The free Coffee Break Concerts--remember Springsteen just when he hit it big? The gigantic World Series of Rock. Nights on the lawn at Blossom (including local favorites the Michael Stanley Band and their record-setting sellout streak).
This book collects the favorite memories of Clevelanders who made the scene: fans, musicians, DJs, reporters, club owners, and more.
Includes rare photographs and other memorabilia such as concert posters, bumper stickers, pins, and ticket stubs.

3 out of 5 stars Cleveland rock(ed).......2007-05-07

It was a fun look back at some of the bands, clubs, concerts, etc. that I spent time in the 70's with. I even saw some quotes and pictures of long time friends.

I thought there were a few glaring omissions though. Devo, who must have sold as many records as almost anyone else from Northeast Ohio, and was an influential force in music, barely warrants a mention. Also, from a media standpoint, Scene Magazine played a big part in exposing people to both local and national bands, and they too are barely referred to.

4 out of 5 stars A Fun Book (www.deannaadams.com).......2007-02-20

Glad to see yet another book on the interesting and richly diverse talent so often associated with the Cleveland music scene. Carlo Wolff has put together a great collection of fun memories and stories - some of which this native hadn't heard before! And lots of photos every nostalgic baby boomer will enjoy. This book reiterates the fascinating impact this area had on pop culture. And proves there are more reasons to reflect on those days than just a trip down memory lane.

5 out of 5 stars Hail Cleveland Rock and Roll.......2007-01-27

If you are from Cleveland, or lived here during the 60s through the 80s, you'll know what this book is about. Carlo Wolff covers the high and the low points of what was Cleveland Rock and Roll during that time. If you need a rerun to what was happening in the music scene in Cleveland, this is it. The book relects a history that ties itself to sounds and places that are gone for good. Elvis, Joey and the Continentals, the Beatles, The Choir, Rastus, Rolling Stones, David Bowie; they were either from here or played here. All of them left an important and permanent mark in the tapestry of Cleveland music. It's all in here. Learn how Carlo Wolff has woven this thirty year history of Cleveland Rock into a very entertaining book.

5 out of 5 stars Thumbs up for Wolff's Cleveland Rock & Roll Memories.......2007-01-21

I was very delighted to get my copy of Cleveland Rock & Roll Memories. Unlike alot of rock books that I have read in the past, his book contained not only memories from players and club owners, but also from the fans!!
As a boomer who attended a ton of Cleveland shows and haunted some of the clubs he writes about, I could not put the book down, until I had absorbed every page.
A great read for anyone who grew up in the golden era of Cleveland Rock & Roll, or for those who wonder why Cleveland was picked for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
The only thing I want is another book with more memories from the clubs and concerts from Cleveland

    Book Description

Recent Duke University graduate Aaron Dinin has produced an entertaining, imaginative look at Krzyzewskiville, the tent city named after Duke University's head men's basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski (Sha-shef-ski). A unique Duke tradition, Krzyzewskiville is used to determine which students are admitted into key games. Taking Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales as his model, Dinin has created characters who narrate their semifictionalized tales—by turns reverent, bawdy, and humorous—to enlighten readers about this cherished institution.

So the story begins. On a wintry night in Durham, North Carolina, writes Dinin, twelve students huddle under the meager protection of a nylon tent. They have little in common except the sacrosanct tradition that has brought them together for the past month. Before the sun next sets, they will anoint themselves in blue and white paint and enter nearby Cameron Indoor Stadium to worship at the altar of Blue Devils basketball. In the meantime, they abide in Krzyzewskiville.

A stranger enters the tent, a respected sportswriter, and suggests that the tenters pass the hours until the next tent check by telling stories of Krzyzewskiville. Like Chaucer’s pilgrims, the students compete to tell the best tale. They report on ribald tenting exploits, relate a dream in which Duke basketball players and coaches test a fan’s loyalty, debate the rationality of tenting as a way of allocating students’ tickets, and describe the spontaneous tent city that sprang up one summer when their beloved “Coach K” was offered a job elsewhere. This storytelling competition creates a loving portrait of the complex rules and tribal customs that make up the rich community and loyal fans that are Krzyzewskiville.

Mickie Krzyzewski, Coach K’s wife and a familiar courtside figure at Duke basketball games, has contributed a foreword praising the “love, commitment, and ownership” of the citizens of Krzyzewskiville.

Cute little take on the Cantabury Tales from the Duke point of view. This book is only for lovers of all things Duke.

5 out of 5 stars The Krzyzewskiville Tales.......2007-02-10

5 out of 5 stars A converted Duke basketball fan.......2006-02-21

Though never having been a particularly big Duke basketball fan, I picked up a copy of this book upon a friend's advice, and am glad I did. It's an entertaining way to learn about the fascinating history of what everyone knows is a storied basketball dynasty (whether you like 'em or not, it's true). The stories are easy to read, but packed with relevant information, and I was able to breeze through the book in one sitdown while still feeling like I'd gained a lot of knowledge. I look forward to what Mr. Dinin writes next.

5 out of 5 stars Witty and Entertaining.......2005-11-28

I thought the Krzyzewskiville Tales did just what it was supposed to do... I learned about Duke and K-ville, but in an entertaining way. I read some other review that said some negative stuff, but I just think those people didn't get the literary allusion. It's desgined in the style of Chaucer, and the book keeps true to that while still explaining the history of K-ville. As a Duke alumnus, I'm proud to have this wonderful tradition represented in such a creative way. And all my friends and family that I've bought it for have trully enjoyed it.

1 out of 5 stars Maybe Book Burning Isn't Such a Bad Idea?.......2005-11-28

As a Duke student who has experienced K-Ville, I can honestly say this book is garbage. The review in Duke's paper saying that buying this book makes you a worse person was dead on. I just looked through it at Barnes and Noble, and even then I felt like my inclination for violent crime went up. Just pure and utter trash.

    Book Description

A beautiful girl disguises herself as a man and lives under one roof with a young male scholar for three years without revealing her true identity. They become "sworn brothers," soul mates and lovers. In a world in which marriage is determined by social status and arranged by parents, what is their inescapable Romeo-and-Juliet-type of fate?

The novel is based upon a popular Chinese folktale that has moved millions to tears. There are various music, movie and drama adaptations of the story in the Chinese language, but this is the first English publication in original fiction form. The Chinese title of the story is Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An absolutely beautiful tale........2007-09-08

Fantastic book, I actually welled up a few times. Although it does bare some resemblance to Romeo and Juliet, the story is actually a Chinese legened which can be dated as far back as 907, which is long before Shakespear was even though of.

    5 out of 5 stars love ain't always easy.......2007-07-16

This book represents a re-telling of a traditional Chinese tale. It is well done although the author, trying to make the language more appealing to modern (American) readers, sometimes misses the mark. However, for anyone interested in Chinese culture, this is a "must read."

    5 out of 5 stars Butterfly Lovers.......2006-06-01

A young chinese girl named Yingtai went to college dressed as a boy because in her time, girls were not allowed to go to college. She studied for almost three years and had a roommate named Shanbo. She fell in love with him and the day she left, the wife of the school master told Shanbo that Yingtai was a woman. Then he went to propose to her, but Yingtai was already engaged. Shanbo was desperate for Yingtai, but could do nothing and Yingtai said no matter what they would be together even if they had to die. So eventually Shanbo got sick and he died and Yingtai told his parents to make a grave next to his so she could join him one day. Then on the way to her wedding she made the Ma family, whcih she was marrying into, go to the cemetary and she jumped in her grave and died by Shanbo's side. In the end there are two butterflies symbolizing Shanbo and Yingtai The book was one of the best I have read so far. I feel everyone should read it because it has history and it's very romantic. You'll never want to put it down because you always want to know what is going to happen.

    4 out of 5 stars Hopeless Romance.......2006-06-01

I am not kid but i did not want to use my e-mail address.

Butterfly Lovers by Fan Dai is an excellent book, however, it took me a while to get into the book. At first the book started off slowly, it took a few chapters of reading for me to begin enjoying it. After the few chapters things started to happen more rapidly and I liked it a lot more. Even though I enjoyed the book, the ending sort of caught me off gaurd, it was strange and extremely random.

I believe this novel would be good for the hopeless romanitc type of person. It is a book where people would do anything for the one they love, even if it means betraying their families. If you enjoy reading romance novels, you would enjoy Butterfly Lovers.

    1 out of 5 stars not good.......2006-06-01

This book is a general love story that really drags on. It comes down to the basic comparison of Romeo and Juliet but it was based in old china. The young girl wants to go to school then she finally gets her way and dress's up as a boy. Through this she falls in love with her roommate and has to keep secret that she's a girl. Then the rest of the story is up you to read and find out what happens.

My opinion on this book was that it was pretty bad. It drags on and seems to just be a basic love story that goes no where. Love stories are not for me and this book is to general how life is portrayed. The book really made me hate love stories because it isn't what real life is like. This book in my opinion was horrible an should not be read by anyone. The story is bad not the writing which is very descriptive. If you are into Romeo and Juliet then you should read this book.

In Misery (1987), as in The Shining (1977), a writer is trapped in an evil house during a Colorado winter. Each novel bristles with claustrophobia, stinging insects, and the threat of a lethal explosion. Each is about a writer faced with the dominating monster of his unpredictable muse.

Paul Sheldon, the hero of Misery, sees himself as a caged parrot who must return to Africa in order to be free. Thus, in the novel within a novel, the romance novel that his mad captor-nurse, Annie Wilkes, forces him to write, he goes to Africa--a mysterious continent that evokes for him the frightening, implacable solidity of a woman's (Annie's) body. The manuscript fragments he produces tell of a great Bee Goddess, an African queen reminiscent of H. Rider Haggard's She.

He hates her, he fears her, he wants to kill her; but all the same he needs her power. Annie Wilkes literally breathes life into him.

Misery touches on several large themes: the state of possession by an evil being, the idea that art is an act in which the artist willingly becomes captive, the tortured condition of being a writer, and the fears attendant to becoming a "brand-name" bestselling author with legions of zealous fans. And yet it's a tight, highly resonant echo chamber of a book--one of King's shortest, and best novels ever. --Fiona Webster

      Amazon.com Audio Review

If Misery loves company, it's found a friend in Academy Award nominee Lindsay Crouse (The Verdict, Places in the Heart). King's ghoulish tale of psychotic "number one fan" Annie Wilkes holding her favorite author, Paul Sheldon, prisoner, unfolds in perfect pitch. Crouse switches from Sheldon to Wilkes (think Kathy Bates) to narrator with smooth, flawless transitions, making the unabridged, 12-hour reading of a writer's hell a listener's paradise. (Running time: 12 hours, eight cassettes)

The monster in this book is human, not supernatural. A crazed fan, obsessed with her favorite creator type, decides to keep him all to herself.

This involves imprisonment, physical and psychological abuse, shackles, weapons, and even a little bit more. Not a nice lady. A look at what can happen to famous people when they get an obsessed stalker.

5 out of 5 stars There is no misery in reading Misery.......2007-08-29

This is an incredible book. One of King's best. It was nearly immposible for me to set down this book.
If you've watched the movie than you HAVE to read the book. The movie does it NO justice. Don't get me wrong the movie was good but the book was... read it. You'll understand then.

5 out of 5 stars "I'm Your Number One Fan".......2007-08-22

This is one of my favorite books i've ever read. I've been a King fan since i was a kid and this is my second favorite of his (the first being The Shining). I had seen the movie prior to reading the book and i was still on edge with the book and constantly surprised. Theres so much in the book that is not in the movie. Also you really get to see the deconstruction of a human being. Paul Sheldon starts out as a normal guy and by the end of it he is reduced to his animal nature. Its a great read from start to finish and trust me you will not be disappointed. The character development is amazing and the suspense is worthy of sitting on the edge of your seat.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Ain't No Cockadoody.......2007-08-14

MISERY is painful. Agonizing. Excruciating. Miserable. I liked it a lot.

Here's a study in pain. An author (Stephen King's favorite protagonist archetype) wrecks his car off the side of a secluded road and is rescued from the wreckage by his biggest fan--who just happens to be a homicidal, psychotic ex-nurse with an obsession. That obsession is the "Misery" series by Paul, our author hero.

Complications emerge when it becomes clear that the "Misery" character dies in Paul's latest and last (?) novel in that series. This does not bode well ... for now, in order to keep the psycho nurse happy, Paul--who lies in bed with shattered legs, stoned on painkillers--must somehow write this character back to life, or he will clearly die himself.

Now, if that won't ruin your weekend, you're a true optimist.

Intended as the next in the Bachman run of Stephen King books, Misery had to come out under King's true name when the pseudonym got leaked. King has theorized that this book may have catapulted Bachman to the center stage of writer's respect had it been given that chance. It probably would have. The book is that miserable--and good.

(This review has been posted by Marcus Damanda, author of the vampire book "Teeth: A Horror Fantasy.")

3 out of 5 stars Why On Earth did King Have to Include the Typewritten Passages? Huge Mistake..........2007-07-08

I absolutely loved the cat and mouse aspect of this novel, and the frights and gore, and the suspense. But getting through this book was an enormous chore due to the fact that the author insisted on including many, many excerpts of the romance novel that character Paul Sheldon is typing while confined in Annie's home.

Unfortunately, Stephen King made a colossal mistake in this book which, had he not done so, would have probably made this novel one of the greatest horror books ever. He includes many portions of another story, one that Paul is being forced to write. And to add to the distraction, Paul's typewriter doesn't provide the letter n, or drops letters sometimes, and you, Dear Reader, are stuck with having to figure out certain words that are missing letters. This concept also distracts horribly from the world of Annie Wilkes because you must now give your attention to a romance novel in progress (in a different and annoying font than the rest of the book). King shifts back and forth endlessly between the gripping, dire horror story taking place, and the godawful typewritten romance. It all becomes incredibly tedious so quickly. You may find yourself skipping entire paragraphs or pages to avoid this nonsense and to get on with the story of Paul versus Annie.

Even if King supposedly had some good reason for this trick, the technique is so jarring and annoying that it ruins the flow of the story, and the reading experience, entirely. You would think his publishers or wife or someone would have suggested to leave out the romance parts.

I'd have loved "Misery" so much more without all that stuff strewn throughout it. And when I reread it again, I will be ignoring those typewritten segments.

Lovely watercolour & pencil illustrations - full of beautiful line and form.

The true rulers of a mythical china "Land of the Seven Caves" are busy quarelling & are easily usurped by the ferocious Lord Shang. After conquering the land, he is content, until a soothsayer prophesies that a painted fan will be his undoing. Skeptical but uneasy, he finally declares all fans are outlawed.

Travelling he sees a simple goatherd he falls in lust with and has her brought to the palace & his downfall begins with quite a few adventures for the heroine along the way.

Naturally everything pans out happily but you may as well keep SOME plot mystery to look forward to, even though it's a picture book.

Very fine illustrations, and an adequate supporting story.

5 out of 5 stars For Chinese Children and Mulan lovers.......2004-10-08

I love Disney & what they have done with the books they have made into movies and how they added their touch, often changing the ending to fit their ideas.

Having said that it is also nice & very important for us to read or the author's original story. Hans Christian Anderson's was a gifted writer & story teller of many wonderful books. In his book the Little Mermaid it has a much sadder ending than Disney's. But again, it's important to know the original story.

This is one of my favorite Mulan books, simply because it was done not as a traditional book, but as a Chinese folding style book. The book has 2 red covers - red is a very special color for the Chinese. The paper that was chosen looks like it is handmade paper and that just add to the beauty of this book. I also like that the poem is in English and also Chinese Characters. The author put alot of thought into this book, and it really shines!

This is definately one of my most treasured books!

There's and old quote that says that the greatest perfumes come in small bottles. This applies for this little, but beautiful book about an ancient Chinese poem that serves as the inspiration for Disney's Mulan.

First you get a little red box, inside you find a scroll made in the typical Chinese way. You unfold little by little the pages that reach almost 240 inches long. And while you read the poem, one really get in the mood because it includes the poem in chinese characters as well.

And if you are looking for illustrations, the book includes some in color, some made by pencil and even a couple of what seems original Chinese paintings.

You get that much in a little book! isn't it great?

If you want to know the poem that inspired the Disney fillm you can't go wrong with this book. You get the entire original poem along with a beautiful presentation. The poem is very short, but what it lacks in length it makes up for in style and mood. From the outset this is a different kind of book. There is no binding, instead it is one long sheet of parer folded back and forth. This give's the reader the sense they are reading an authentic Chinese document. The photos, drawings, sketches, and Chinese writing inside only heighten this impression. It's also a facinating study in how the film was structured. You can see where Disney added to the story or left things out, as well as see the the visual development of Mulan and her world as told by the pre-production art work. Wthout a doubt, this makes for the best book of a Disney film yet!

      5 out of 5 stars "The" book.......1999-02-19

if i could only buy one book in my whole life, this would be it

5 out of 5 stars It's one of the best "Mulan" books!.......1998-12-18

Most of the reasons I get any Disney book is because I want to know how to draw the characters(and because I just like the movie). For Mulan, I heard it was an ancient poem before a movie, so I wanted to read the actual poem. I was browsing around in the Disney store when, low and behold, there was the poem. Inside was also a lot of rough pencil drawigs to help me draw the characters. This is a collectible book for any Disney or Mulan fan.
