Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic primer and reference........2006-12-20

I still pull this book off the shelf every year to refresh. In fact, I'm on my second copy after wearing out the first. I highly recommend this book for high school and college graduates starting out. Most of us don't start with a lot of money to invest in clothing. I started out similarly to the book's suggestions. I've advanced considerably since then and this has been a great guide in growing my wardrobe without waste. That isn't to say I haven't purchased some items that I fell in love with along the way. This book covers that too.

As a traveling professional I have always found the travel advice for packing only what is necessary a wonderful section. The photographs are wonderfully informative. There are a few outdated memes such as in the regional dress section - a knowledge worker wearing boots with anything other than jeans in Denver is tacky.

Suits are important. I'm one of many that can attribute a successful interview partially to the suit. A team of very tired interviewers would only show up to my interview after they were sure I wasn't dressed in "typical Colorado attire." I wore a suit, my shoes were shined, and I looked professional. Good looking clothes matter.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this if you're young!.......2006-11-27

At first glance this seems simple and basic, and because of that you may pass it by. Yet that is exactly why this book (and the others in it's series) are worth the buy.

You'll learn how to blend in, how to fit in, how to step in -- and step up (the corporate ladder). If you're a young man who wears clunky black shoes with a suit and thinks that's OK because they are "in style" - read this book. If you're a man that thinks suit's aren't necessary because you're job allows "techie casual" -- read this book!!

It will help you acheive the next level in your career...

3 out of 5 stars The best book on the market for how to dress in 2006........2006-08-31

The book is probably the best book on the market for how to dress in 2006. I purchased this book to compete with the younger business crowd in interviews. I find it exceptional on style representation of how men dress. It does not emphasis the uniform of an office. It lacks empahsis on the male tendancey to expect everyone to show involvement by dressing alike. I call this the socially conditioning of men to follow a uniform dress code. I suspect this comes from all the socializing in sports acitivites. It is both a signals of member of your team and the oposing team. How you dress in work especially corporate America has major implications on how you are viewed in your work place. I suggest adjusting your style to each circumstance: work, play, social life to give the best impression

4 out of 5 stars Gives A Good Framework.......2006-08-24

I liked this book because it gave a good strategy for identifying what elements you already own, prior to buying new clothes.

2 out of 5 stars Very basic advice.......2005-10-06

If you know nothing about dressing yourself, this book is targeted at you. There's some good advice here, but some questionable advice as well, and some of the advice is already dated -- the monochrome tie/shirt combo went out with Regis' millionaire show. A much better book is Flusser's "Dressing the Man." And if you want a really good book on elegant living, try Bernhard Roetzel's "Gentleman's Guide to Grooming and Style."

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars a very odd book.......2007-03-30

This is an odd book, and I couldn't quite make sense of it when I got it. It does not really contain applicable advice like A.F.'s books, although it contains occasional detail not found in other places (such as the descriptions of various textiles). It overemphasizes certain styles, and in general it leaves the impression of being eccentric and a little dated. I am glad I purchased it, but if I had just been trying to figure how to actually construct a wearable wardrobe, I would regard it as a wasted purchase.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Book for the More Advanced Reader.......2006-04-25

This is a highly recommendable book that would be of greatest benefit for the more advanced reader with an interest in looking elegant in a suit. It is exceptionally well illustrated and is the sort of book that can help make or break you as far as your presentability goes. Needless to say, the style tips here are entirely of the classical sort that remain perfectly current despite the fact that this was published as long ago as 1990.

The main question for most readers would be whether to go for this or for 'Dressing the Man' by Allan Flusser. Fortunately, what you find here is perfectly complementary to Flusser, who admittedly has the advantage of starting from simpler basics and explaining these well to the beginner. A total novice may find the comprehensive review of different suit/blazer fabric types in this book to be a bit overwhelming, but for the reader who has grasped the basics this is the perfect book to help further his knowledge and taste. Whoever might have been left suspicious that Flusser may be keeping the finer points about suit styles a well guarded professional secret would probably find this book the logical next step to go on and further his knowledge and taste.

It should be kept in mind that this book concentrates exclusively on suits and blazers. Allan Flusser's `Dressing the Man' is far better when it comes to showing the reader how to coordinate the suit with tie, shirt and to some degree shoes - though even then Flusser emphasis is still on the suit. Arguably, the most encyclopaedic and balanced overview of all of the basics can be found in Bernhard Roetzel's book 'Gentleman'. However, more advanced readers who are familiar with these other authors will definitely want to add this book to their collection.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2005-05-24

Owned this book since it was first published but lost it in moving, which really stinks! I've had to buy a second-hand edition because it was a constant reference for me, especially when I tried ironing my shirts and pants but ended up ironing my hands.
This is truly a classic book and while its recommendations may not be exactly in line with modern American men's fashion, it will not disappoint in the long term.

5 out of 5 stars Loved this book.........2004-10-24

This book gave me excellent photos for reference. I use this book to put my outfits together, you dont have to buy all the expensive clothes... just mix and match vintage and new together for a sleek look.

4 out of 5 stars A very good book, intended for an "intermediate" audience........2002-07-12

For students of all things sartorial, who have progressed beyond the basic primers offered by Flusser, Boyer, and others, "The Elegant Man" is a must have. While the book is by no means perfect (none of the current available crop of men's clothing treatises are), it is the only widely available work that examines areas such as fabric type with anything besides a cursory glance. If you are an MBA grad still trying to figure out what suit to wear to an interview, or a "Dress for Success" type, then this probably isn't the book for you; however, if you have read Flusser and Boyer's books, and want to learn a little more, then I think you might enjoy the level of detail and more narrowly focused viewpoint provided by "The Elegant Man".

If you don't know how to tie a tie--or pretend you don't--obtain this book posthaste. The Chic Simple folks have once again produced a classic, stunning collection with gorgeous color photographs, perfect problem solvers, and helpful resources, including the Web site addresses for everyone from Adidas to Waterman pens. They show you the essentials for preventing Monday morning "I have nothing to wear to the office" panics, the basics for a camping trip, and the perfect shoes to wear with a tux. Can you mix a tattersall shirt with a checked tie? What does tattersall look like, anyway? Have no fear, it's in here. This book will help you create a sensible, organized wardrobe that'll keep you prepared for any fashion situation, from a job interview to "casual day" at the office to the golf course.

The book is especially suited for men who hate to shop because they have no idea what they're doing. How do you spot a good-quality dress shirt? Look for at least 14 stitches to the inch on the placket. What to wear for a nice slimming effect? Try a suit with a tailored vest. How do you take care of leather shoes? How to pack a suitcase so your clothes don't come out looking like crepe paper? Chic Simple Men's Wardrobe tells you.

Book Description

Men's clothes today are confusing--they reflect the multi-task world we all live in, where work is a constant presence and fun is serious business. The old uniforms are gone, with casual work environments, new cultural standards, and increasing global influences, new styles are evolving. In this changing time, Chic Simple Men's Wardrobe makes the myriad options easy, accessible, and inexpensive. The book is divided into four sections of a guy's life:  WORK LIFE takes you through everything you need to compete sartorially whether you work at home or in an office, EVERYDAY LIFE reflects today's more casual society and the new dress codes for weekends and after work, OUTDOOR LIFE is a gear guide to both the classics and the tech-advanced sport clothes for golf, tennis, skiing, fishing, hunting, or the gym, and evening wear, whether for a casual dinner date or opening night, is covered in NIGHT LIFE. In addition, you'll learn to:

--dress for an interview or a night on the town
--handle the new corporate casual look
--travel for a week with an overnight bag
--relax when the invite reads "black tie"
--choose the right cut for your body type
--dejunk your closet and recycle the classics you own
--create a low-maintenance lifetime wardrobe

First Aid, a section in the back, turns you into your own valet--stains, starch, ironing are demystified; how to pack and how to shop are deconstructed; and a glossary defines more than 200 terms from "gusset" to "placket."

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not overly informatitve or useful.......2007-04-16

The book has great pictures and gives a good basic description of clothing. Granted there are some "classic" pieces in there, you're probably better off walking around a department store to see what is fashionable at the time. In addition to department stores, a subscription to GQ or any men's magazine would probably work also.

2 out of 5 stars almost NO HELP AT ALL.......2004-04-06

I was hoping for a book that would provide specific advice on how to pick quality clothes that work for my body type (tall & thin). This book wasn't very helpful. It was full of fluff that got in the way of reading the parts of the book that were somewhat helpful. For example, much of the book is filled with trivia and history of different types of clothes. Another example of fluff was the tips on what types of music to listen to while wearing the clothes (no I'm not kidding). I don't give a damn about the history of Chinos and I don't think other men care either. The helpful information in this book could have filled a book one quarter of the books size. And in all honesty, even the helpful stuff wasn't that helpful.

2 out of 5 stars well..........2003-06-01

If you are young and gay or just young then this book may be of some use as you cruise the shopping malls. If on the other hand you are a little older, gay or straight, shy away from J Crew and Abercrombie, cringe at khakis, wonder at those who show their t-shirt peeking up from under their polo shirt and have given up wearing ball caps in public and are ready to upgrade your image then Alan Flusser's THE ART OF PERMANENT FASHION would be a better buy.

5 out of 5 stars Great basic book.......2003-01-14

Gives a lot of great tips on what to get. I need to buy a blue blazer, and they have good guides to help you out.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2002-10-29

Next to perfect. An invaluable reference guide.

    Book Description

Little Pink Raincoat is a collection of mini–profiles in shopping and romantic courage. A little Coco Chanel, a lot Carrie Bradshaw, with a dash of Maureen Dowd––this hip, hilarious account from Gigi Anders relates her experiences with the dual obsessions of clothing and men.

It's a classic female position for the Sex and the City set. From one very fabulous and elusive little pink raincoat (to woo the commitment phobe) to a pair of very persuasive peach panties (gift from a dazzling doc) Gigi Anders relates her experiences as they deal with the dual obsessions of clothing and men. Ten vignettes chronicling ten choice sartorial items and the ten corresponding boyfriends that would undoubtedly love her stylishly ever after, even if they didn't.

Gigi Anders spied her beautiful little pink raincoat in a Sunday Styles article, and, desperate to obtain one of her own, she proceeded single–mindedly to hunt it down. Six states and approximately seventy–five Gaps later, bliss in the form of a little pink raincoat was hers––a weapon of mass seduction that would surely make her boyfriend swoon permanently.

A tasty, universal, uplifting, pop cultural meditation on the things we crave and the lengths we'll go to get them, Little Pink Raincoat is ten short chapters organized around one freakin' fabulous and hard–to–come–by item –– either clothing or an accessory or a kind of makeup –– paired with the hard–to–pin–down man in question at the time of the given sartorial–cosmetic love obsession, and the quest to nail 'em both. The items and boyfriends are all from Anders' real life, her real (extremely jammed) closet and her bed.

5 out of 5 stars How to be Your Man's Fashion Angel.......2007-09-28

Betsy Durkin Matthes' book DRESSING THE MAN YOU LOVE is a tour de force illustrated guide to helping a man dress his best according to classic standards of clothing excellence. The illustrations and tone of DRESSING harken to a more civilized time when people expected men to be gentlemen and consistently look their best, while it presents an up-to-date modern awareness of materials and style.

This is a thrilling book for anyone who's wished to know the secrets of what makes the difference in appearance for a well-dressed man, as it takes the reader into the fascinating world of men's fashion. Matthes sets precisely the right mood for helping anyone dress their favorite man to the nines, regardless how little they may already know. With a friendly tone, DRESSING inspires, educates, and helps to empower and embolden us to offer solid mens fashion assistance in ways that make a huge difference.

DRESSING is relaxing and reassuring to readers of all levels of fashion awareness, as it sets one's mind to correctly prioritizing what areas to focus on in improving your man's wardrobe... from the best places and times to shop, to what to shop for... to how to work most effectively with a tailor. Matthes consistently achieves the perfect balance between providing the "big picture" of fashion planning and a wealth of information on all the little things that together make such a big difference in the overall look. Details such common suit weave patterns, tie patterns, color coordination, sleeve and hem lengths, and proper alterations are covered beautifully with vivid descriptions and ample sketches.

    Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Reading Even For Men.......2007-09-09

Being a man, it was not easy for me to sit down and read this book based on its title. I must admit that I did not know what I was going to get out of this book. However, after reading the book I must now admit that I have learned much from Betsy Matthes' book.

The book is just what the title suggests: a book on how to dress for men. It is actually a well written book that moves quickly. The illustrations in the book also were helpful and the pointers that Matthes gives are well worth your time.

Overall, I was happy to have read the book. I have learned that some of my own dressing habits need to change. It's amazing how much you don't realise goes into dressing for success until you see it in this work. Good job Betsy!

1 out of 5 stars The Double Standard.......2007-08-25

I read this book with an open mind and found it to be the worst book about men's fashion yet. If you want a book on how men dress, read one written by a men. This is just another example of women trying to change men. If men were to do the same thing, we'd be verbally assaulted to no end about appreciating a women's personal style.

5 out of 5 stars A Thorough Primer of Men's Fashions, With Whimsy!.......2007-07-27

This book is packed with information and details and could be a textbook for an actual class in men's fashions - but it's a FAR more enjoyable read! It answers every question you might have about men's clothing, with details on care, coordination of colors and patterns, and lots of insight on how to minimize body "flaws" and maximize strong points. "Should he wear pants with cuffs?" "What jacket cut would look best with his body type?" "What shoes would go with this new suit?" The author can answer these questions and so MUCH more. If you want a man to look polished, professional and handsome, if you want to turn a "guy" into a gentleman, and if you want hints on how to nudge your man towards the best clothes choices, buy this book!

5 out of 5 stars Gentlemen will be Back!.......2007-07-09

Betsy Durkin Matthes' brillianty written and meticulously researched book "Dressing The Man You Love" gives hope that the classic attire and appearance of a Gentleman does not have to be an illusion of the past.
It is the perfect guide for everyone who takes pride in their appearance. This book teaches class and style...from recognizing quality to determininig correct sizes, Betsy shows you in a fun and unpretentious way, how to choose clothing that will minimize any less-than-perfect aspects of your man's physique and how to focus on his best assets.
