Subtitled A Tale of a Peddler, Some Monkeys and Their Monkey Business, this absurd and very simple story has become a classic, selling hundreds of thousands of copies since its first publication in 1940. A peddler walks around selling caps from a tall, tottering pile on his head. Unable to sell a single cap one morning, he walks out into the countryside, sits down under a tree, checks that all the caps are in place, and falls asleep. When he wakes up, the caps are gone--and the tree is full of cap-wearing monkeys. His attempts to get the caps back generate the kind of repetitive rhythm that 3- and 4-year-olds will adore. (Preschool and older) --Richard Farr

5 out of 5 stars Caps for Sale.......2007-09-20

I ordered this book for a new first-grade teacher because she was lacking reading material in her classroom. It has been a favorite story of mine for probably 20 years. I used it in the classroom to have the kids dramatize it as a comprehension check. They loved acting it out. We used paper plates for the caps. The "monkeys" sat on a table when they were "treed." I would recommend it for children's libraries.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL EDITION TO AN OLD, OLD CLASSIC.......2007-05-12

I hate to admit it, but I can remember this story being read to me by my mother shortly after it was first published. I loved it as a child and love it now. The story, at first glance is simple, well told and an absolute delight. The illustrations are "old world," and the type I grew up on. Even though the story has been around for years and years, it is certainly no worse for the wear. What delighted me as a child seems to delight the kids of today. I read this one to my various classes and the kids all seem to love it. Actually, there is not much to not like about this one. Recommend it highly.

4 out of 5 stars Never Gets Old.......2007-05-02

I recently started reading this book to my two year old, and she loves it as much as I did when I was young. It's fun to incorporate lessons on counting and colors as we read this silly tale of monkey see, monkey do.

5 out of 5 stars Monkey See Monkey Do.......2007-03-29

"Once there was a peddler who sold caps. But he was not like an ordinary peddler carrying his wares on his back. He carried them on top of his head."

When a peddler falls asleep on the job, he finds that his caps are stolen by a bunch of cheeky monkeys. The peddler discovers a way to get his caps back in a hilarious illustration of "Monkey see monkey do".

This book, first written in the 1940's has stood the test of time.

He may be an old standby, but he never lets us down. When in doubt, turn to the story of the cat that transformed a dull, rainy afternoon into a magical and just-messy-enough adventure. There's another, hidden adventure, too: this book really will help children learn to read. With his simple and often single-vowel vocabulary, the good Doctor knew what he was doing: hear it, learn it, read it--laughing all the way. The Cat in the Hat is a must for any child's library.

When the parental units away, the cat will play. Take a kid, and a cat, and a lot of smaller cats, and a bunch of toys, and many snowballs and other devices of childish warfare, and you get a barrel of laughs and entertainment, indeed.

You just have to be good at the fast cleanup.

What can I say, it's The Cat in the Hat. You remember this book from your own childhood. Let's face it, it's one you have to own. The rhymes, the fun story, it's Dr. Seuss at his best. My kids will pick this book to read over and over, and over! Even my 19 month-old can get into the Rhyming and playful wording. If you don't already own this, you owe it to yourself and your kids to buy it.

2 out of 5 stars The ID in the hat.......2007-07-24

The Id in the Hat, by Ryan Haynie

Dr. Seuss began his book, "The Cat in the Hat", with a vision: to exterminate illiteracy by creating a children's book so amazing that it would convince children everywhere that reading was "cool". If he could encourage young readers to start reading independently in their early years it would have a drastic effect on their overall literacy and desire to continue to enjoy literature later in life. His goal was noble, but he didn't account for the psychoanalytical underpinnings. The Freudian structural model explains that we all have three parts of our personality: the id, the ego and the superego. All children are born with the id: the impulsive, driving desire to feel pleasure. This is juxtaposed with the superego, or the societal morals and norms that limit behavior. The ego is left with the task to satisfy the demands of the other two parties and help keep the individual in a realistic mindset. Freud said that the formative years of a child's life are critical to the development of the ego which would be the motivating force to adopt a not-so-physically-gratifying hobby such as reading. Although Seuss creates a colorful and catchy tome in "The Cat in the Hat", he fails to accomplish his goals with his audience due to a misrepresentation of the Freudian structural model as portrayed through the fish, the Cat, and the children.

The first aspect of Freud's structural model as depicted in "The Cat in the Hat" is the superego, represented through the children's pet fish. The superego is related to one's sense of morality, consisting of his beliefs of acceptable conduct and traits and is often referred to as the conscience. The illustration of the superego through the fish is found on page 11 when the fish responds to the Cat's proposition to lolly-gag the day away in play, saying: "Tell that Cat in the Hat/ You do not want to play./ He should not be here/ He should not be about./ He should not be here when your mother is out!" The fish's disapproval of the carnal desire to "have fun", especially in the absence of parental supervision, is a perfect example of superego influence over the children in the story.

In the next page, Seuss takes the legs out from under his "conscience" by humiliating the fish in the Cat's game, "up, up, up with a fish". As the Cat lifts the fish into the air against his wishes, the fish and, subsequently, his will are disregarded. Although this representation of conflict between id and superego does follow Freud's pattern, the undertone communicated to the audience is that the superego is foolish and "wussy" compared to the impulsive id.

The irony of Seuss' dilemma is apparent: he must encourage small children to develop the habit of reading against their dominating id. In Freud's structural model, the id is the impulse-driven influence that we are born with. Its inherent characteristics include a desire to satiate one's physical desires; an influence based mainly on pleasure and instant gratification. Since reading offers no immediate pleasurable gains, it can easily be over shadowed by the powerful id in young people and result in pursuit of satisfaction in other venues such as binge eating or, in more extreme cases, delinquency. Seuss therefore has the task of satisfying the id while encouraging the ego to overcome any residual cravings.

In the case of the "Cat in the Hat", the Cat would personify (or, rather, in-feline-ify) the id: bent on having "fun" no matter the circumstances. This is apparent on page 7, where he states "I know it is wet/ And the sun is not sunny./ But we can have/ Lots of good fun that is funny!" This shows the impulsive desire for "fun" despite the sodden roadblock of a rainy day. The problem with the representation made by Seuss comes in the resolution of the conflict. As the house has been devastated by the gallivanting of the Cat, the children face the dilemma of social conflict in the form of parental discipline for having let id-dominated impulses overcome superego guidelines. Seuss overcomes this obstacle in an irrational, id-driven, fanciful, manner: through what I like to call the "Cat-in-the-Hat-traption". Riding a mysterious janitorial golf cart, the Cat in the Hat instantaneously amends the problem by magically eliminating the mess. This solution lends to the reader's mind a painless solution, or, in other words, a lack of consequences for the indulgence in id-inspired desires. Without the consequences to aid in the development of the ego, children will undoubtedly opt for the paths of least resistance in acquiring their personal pleasures, such as theft or murder, without a concrete understanding of the relationship between real-life "choice and consequence" scenarios. Seuss' solution to the problem completely destroys the Freudian model of an ego that successfully satisfies both id and superego in order to develop personality traits such as a love for reading.

The children's lack of action in "The Cat in the Hat" also misrepresents the function of the Freudian structural model. Seuss presents the children, Sally and the narrator, "I", at the beginning of the book as the main characters with a dilemma of childhood, rainy-day lethargy. As they are placed in the middle of an external struggle, Seuss successfully represents the plight of the ego through them. The ego is the reality-driven aspect of personality, burdened with the task of satisfying the demands of both id and superego while finding plausible, real-life solutions to problems. Seuss, however, gives the impression that the children are afflicted with indecisiveness. This implies to his audience of little people that personality development is hard. This is demonstrated through the lack of action of the children throughout the great majority of the book. They are portrayed as passive observers of the conflict between Cat and fish the first 82% of this book, and ultimately take no action when interrogated by their authority figure as to their most recent dealings. On the final page, we see further encouragement for the same type of apathy in the questions posed by the narrator: "Should we tell her about it?/ Now, what should we do?/ Well.../ What would you do/ If your mother asked you?" This message communicates to the audience a weak ego. With a weak ego, the entire structural model is thrown out of balance, rendering impossible the healthy development of a realistic personality. As the audience is made up of almost entirely ego-developing youngsters, this puts subconscious blocks on their normal development of personality and would encourage them to embrace drugs, sex, money, and foods high in trans fat instead of taking up reading as a healthy past-time

When Dr. Seuss embarked on his literacy-promoting campaign, he was faced by the daunting task of encouraging id-driven little ones to embrace a not-so-satisfying use of time. His attempt at inspiring the young tots to live a life in literature is noble, but poorly executed. Sure, he's sold millions of copies and entertained youthful readers for generations, but parents: beware! Though Seuss attempts to encourage little readers through a simple and colorful rhyme of a lid-donning feline, the subconscious psychological underpinnings might very well have the reverse effect on his audience for a lifetime.

How long did it take him to write The Cat in the Hat and The Cat in the Hat
Comes Back?

Were these books instantly successful, or did their popularity build?

The answers to these questions and more can be found in this fascinating illustrated study of two books that changed the way our children learn how to read.

4 out of 5 stars For the researcher in you.......2007-03-22

The Annotated Cat in the Hat is an interesting read. One sees behind the fun and outlandish escapades of Seuss's most well-known character. A great deal of thought goes into writing and illustrating children's books and this book delves into and explains the process.

Someone who is curious about rhythmic cadences and the reasoning behind them will surely enjoy learning the hidden meanings of those in The Cat in the Hat.

The book is not for the casual reader. It must be read by someone who has a love of language, writing, and the creative process.

5 out of 5 stars The wonderful Dr. Suess.......2007-01-27

With only 236 words, Dr. Seuss blasted onto the children's literature scene with his revolutionary reader The Cat in the Hat. In the days of the Dick and Jane primers, reading was not the most enjoyable pastime for children, but Dr. Seuss changed all that and is now an icon.

In The Annotated Cat: Under the Hats of Seuss and His Cats readers get not only the complete texts and art of The Cat in the Hat, and The Cat in the Hat Comes Back, but also two original essays and a magazine story by Seuss, draft material and sketches, photographs and page-by-page annotations of the two classics, as well as an introduction to the man, Seuss and his work.

The Annotated Cat is an intriguing look into the mind of a children's book legend. Especially for those of us who strive to write for children, the insight put forth on Seuss' creations is mind-blowing in its detail. His quest for perfection (and near attainment of it) shows in the sketches and writes and re-writes of his books.

Philip Nel does an excellent job of analyzing the plethora of information available and commenting on the various aspects of Seuss creations.

Armchair Interviews says: A must-read for the Seuss lover or hopeful children's writer.

Book Description

Over the last few years, Linux has grown both as an operating system and a tool for personal and business use. Simultaneously becoming more user friendly and more powerful as a back-end system, Linux has achieved new plateaus: the newer filesystems have solidified, new commands and tools have appeared and become standard, and the desktop--including new desktop environments--have proved to be viable, stable, and readily accessible to even those who don't consider themselves computer gurus.

Whether you're using Linux for personal software projects, for a small office or home office (often termed the SOHO environment), to provide services to a small group of colleagues, or to administer a site responsible for millions of email and web connections each day, you need quick access to information on a wide range of tools. This book covers all aspects of administering and making effective use of Linux systems. Among its topics are booting, package management, and revision control. But foremost in Linux in a Nutshell are the utilities and commands that make Linux one of the most powerful and flexible systems available.

Now in its fifth edition, Linux in a Nutshell brings users up-to-date with the current state of Linux. Considered by many to be the most complete and authoritative command reference for Linux available, the book covers all substantial user, programming, administration, and networking commands for the most common Linux distributions.

Comprehensive but concise, the fifth edition has been updated to cover new features of major Linux distributions. Configuration information for the rapidly growing commercial network services and community update services is one of the subjects covered for the first time.

But that's just the beginning. The book covers editors, shells, and LILO and GRUB boot options. There's also coverage of Apache, Samba, Postfix, sendmail, CVS, Subversion, Emacs, vi, sed, gawk, and much more. Everything that system administrators, developers, and power users need to know about Linux is referenced here, and they will turn to this book again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Linux Reference.......2007-09-16

This book is a constant companion on my physical desktop....if you deal with Linux in anyway at all this book is a necessity.

4 out of 5 stars A very big nutshell!.......2007-07-23

This book is as it promises, lots of information in a very (relatively) small space. The chapters are organized on topics that the newbie (read: me!) needs to know about and the explanations are thorough and well-written. While the old hand will understand the material covered easily and without much review, the newbie will have to read and re-read to get it all. Chapter 3 lists the most common LINUX commands and details arguments that go with them. The index and the fact that the commands lists are alphabetical make it very easy to look up a specific command or function and find out what you need to know to make it work on the spot. The chapters on Shells and on the VIM Editor are very informative and make two tough topics easy to understand. Reading through the VIM editor chapter as I did a lab practical made the process almost fun. For me, the best part was that I could understand the book, and my way experienced friend also finds it a useful reference for his more advanced work. So, I'll be able to use it while I grow into it as a LINUX user.

5 out of 5 stars It's a Nutshell book. Duh........2007-07-15

If you've been in the tech field for any length of time you own at least one Nutshell book. If you like them, you own several; if you don't, you probably stopped at one.

4 out of 5 stars good Linux desk encyclopedia.......2007-07-14

This is a good paper Linux reference for system administrators and (to some extent) software developers. If you are using Linux as a desktop system this is probably not the book for you, because you will do everything through a GUI and will never need anything in this book.

Despite initial appearances, this is not just a dump of all the Unix man pages. Each command entry is considerably condensed, with less-used options omitted and most of the more verbose option descriptions shrunk to one line. On the other hand it gives lengthier and more useful synopses than the man pages do. Some of the more complicated programs such as gawk and cvs have their own chapters with detailed introductions to the tools.

This is almost totally a reference, with no tutorial information and some scattered examples. The introductory sections on each tool are good. The book has a good functional index which helps find the relevant commands.

I have mixed feelings about the level of coverage in this book. It's perched in an awkward place between a really comprehensive reference (which would have to be multiple volumes) and an overview that alerts you to the capabilities and where to find the commands, without giving you the parameters and options. I think I would like it better if it had less detail, so I could quickly get an overview (without rummaging through 942 pages) and then delve into the man pages for the details. Think of the present book as a desktop encyclopedia: it gives you a good overview, and if you already know an area it can remind you of the parameters, but it's neither a tutorial nor a complete reference.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Book.......2007-02-25

When you need to know what a Linux command does and all the options you can use with it, this book is the one to buy. I have two other books on how to install and use Linux. They teach you about the integrated software and some of the operating system commands for specific actions. This book details the commands and syntax in depth.

Book Description

Something is coming after Tiffany ...

Tiffany Aching is ready to begin her apprenticeship in magic. She expects spells and magic -- not chores and ill-tempered nanny goats! Surely there must be more to witchcraft than this!

What Tiffany doesn't know is that an insidious, disembodied creature is pursuing her. This time, neither Mistress Weatherwax (the greatest witch in the world) nor the fierce, six-inch-high Wee Free Men can protect her. In the end, it will take all of Tiffany's inner strength to save herself ... if it can be done at all.

5 out of 5 stars Love those wee free men!.......2007-09-26

This is a great children's book as well as for adults. I love the wee free men as only Pratchett can describe them. The "sharkies" and "big job" are personal favorites. This book has been read several times in my household and we actually gave a copy to our nephew for his birthday one year. He liked it so much he has asked for more titles by Pratchett.

5 out of 5 stars Pratchett at his worst...........2007-09-23

...would still be better than Rowling at her best. The 'Editorial Reviewer' that created this comparison is just covering him (her) self with ridicule. Pratchett was creating masterpieces when Rowling was still in kindergarten. For that matter, in many ways, she still is.

5 out of 5 stars Is this really for kids?.......2007-07-05

I found this book to be immensely entertaining. Despite relatively clean jokes, this doesn't really seem all that different from the rest of the Discworld series, in terms of reading difficulty. However, I imagine I might say otherwise, were I still in elementary school.

5 out of 5 stars JUST what I wanted!.......2007-05-07

It took me a little to find the right cover, but it was just what I wanted, and came in good time!

4 out of 5 stars Not Pratchett's best story, but full of Pratchett's heart.......2007-03-18

As an avid Terry Pratchett reader, I believe there are two kinds of his book: good and great. A Hat Full of Sky is of the good variety, as it stands on its own. However, I believe it's a great chapter in the larger work of the Discworld series. He has something very important to say here about responsibility, about relationships within the community, and about deep morality . . . I think that Pratchett's sympathies lie deeply with his witches, and watching this witch grow up is his lesson to us . . . I laughed and cried, and went away for the better.

(And ignore the Harry Potter comparisons. While I think Rowling is a fine author, Pratchett is the better storyteller, in the old, old sense of the term. His stories crackle with the energy of seeing all the parts of ourselves leaping back at us.)

The perfect first space book for those almost-readers, There's No Place Like Space takes us on a whirlwind tour of our solar system, with a few constellations thrown in for good measure. Cat in the Hat (along with beloved Thing One and Thing Two) straps on his space suit and rhymes his way among the nine planets, presenting important facts along the way. Where else could your preschooler learn phonics and astronomy at same time? "A planet can have satellites that surround it. Uranus has lots of these objects around it" is just one example. This is a fine addition to the library of any young stargazer--few books are written with this many facts furnished in such an easy-reading manner. (Preschool to early reader) --Jill Lightner

Book Description

Blast off for educational fun! Beginning readers and budding astronomers are launched via Seussian sorcery on a wild trip to visit the nine planets in our solar system along with the Cat in the Hat, Thing One, Thing Two, and Dick and Sally.

4 out of 5 stars There's No Place Like Space.......2007-10-03

There's So Place Like Space is a great book for toddlers who are interested in space. Not too complicated but good for learning a few interesting facts about our planets. Written with the rhyme of Dr. Seuss.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introductory book to Planets.......2007-09-25

I had not realized the effectiveness of this book until my 4 year old started making up songs about the planets, their colors, and their place in space. As I listened to his little songs he sang as he was playing, I realized his information, or lyrics, came from what he learned in this book. Entertaining, fun, educational. You can't go wrong with this rhyming introduction and imaginary travel through space.

5 out of 5 stars Science made easy and enjoyable.......2007-03-09

My 2 1/2 year old daughter and 3 year old niece love this book. It gives enough information about the planets and solar system to be educational, but the author also uses classic Seuss elements of rhyming and silliness to keep the kids sustained in attention and entertained. I highly recommend this to any young solar system fans!!

5 out of 5 stars SUPER book for a preschool class.......2006-10-07

I had to go to the bookstore last night to purchase a new book to read to the preschool class I teach. I can say without a doubt this was enjoyed by ALL the children. SO easy to read and accurate too :) They all enjoyed it and I am VERY happy to add this to my book collection!!

5 out of 5 stars Pre-Schooler Likes Better Than Me and My Place in Space.......2006-01-22

We purchased this and Me and My Place in Space for our pre-schooler. While the other book is more scientifically accurate (showing rings around Jupiter, Neptune, and Uranus) this book was more engaging for our little one. She sits still while I read every page. The other book is perhaps better for older, more sophisticated readers.

5 out of 5 stars Very Easy, even for "older " brains!.......2007-09-30

I'm an Ubuntu newbie, just a 50ish y.o. mom whose son advised I break away from the dominant economic megaculture that is trying to take over our computers. So, he loaded Ubuntu over my XP and I got the Ubuntu Bible. The Bible is very easy to understand, well organized and seems good at answering my questions. I'm loving the whole 60s thing coming alive again-- protest just because its the right thing to do.

2 out of 5 stars Ubuntu Bible - Below Expectations.......2007-09-28

Perhaps I am missing something since others seem to like this book, but my experience is that if you are new to Linux and the Ubuntu distro you will need another book to understand how to use the OS. I found that an old copy of Peter Norton's Complete Guide to Linux was needed along with this book. For instance, there is a lot of 'how to' for installing Ubuntu for desktop and servers but nothing in the Index about how to install new application software even though there is a section on the subject.

The small light print was also not good.

4 out of 5 stars A Decent Guide to Explore Ubuntu Linux .......2007-09-23

Ubuntu Linux Bible by William von Hagen is decent guide for this popular, robust, and free operating system, and for the free application software that comes with the Ubuntu Linux distribution. The book is tuned for beginners as well as intermediate-level users. It includes Version 6.06 of Ubuntu on a CD. Version 7.04 is available as of writing this review. However, after installing 6.06, the user can easily perform an online upgrade to 7.04: just use the Ubuntu Update Manager mentioned on pg. 609 of the book and see if a new version is available. Chapter 17 Consumer Electronics and Ubuntu is a timely and useful addition for those users in need of moving data between their computers and other electronic devices: cell phones, PDAs, MP3 players etc. If the reader is looking for a well-organized book with plenty of information on Ubuntu Linux either for a PC or a server, I strongly recommend Ubuntu Linux Bible. You will love the book and the software.

1 out of 5 stars serious problems with this book/CD.......2007-09-06

After finding that with a powerful magnifying glass I could actually read the print, the first thing to try is to access the files in a FAT32 partition using the included Desktop CD, however:

The disk included with the book does not seem to match the text!. See page 37, where we are instructed to use System>Administration>Disks. Unfortunately the version of Desktop Ubuntu provided does not have a Disks menu item under Administration, so we can never get to a Disks Manager screen like Figure 2.13 on page 38!

Perhaps it would actually work if one were to install Ubuntu on the HD, but I'm not likely to do that until I see that the Desktop Version works properly.

1 out of 5 stars Poor, Small, Light Print.......2007-09-04

It seems to be a trend with some computer books to use grey instead of black ink and to print in thin small type. I don't know if this is confined to one publisher.

This is very apparent in a bookstore. I don't know if one can find this kind of problem "looking inside" the book at Amazon.

If I can't see it I can't read it.

Thus 1 star and I am not going to purchase it.

Authors should pay more attention to what happens to their book after they turn in the manuscript.

Book Description

David Litchfield has devoted years to relentlessly searching out the flaws in the Oracle database system and creating defenses against them. Now he offers you his complete arsenal to assess and defend your own Oracle systems. This in-depth guide explores every technique and tool used by black hat hackers to invade and compromise Oracle and then it shows you how to find the weak spots and defend them. Without that knowledge, you have little chance of keeping your databases truly secure.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting Reading.......2007-08-10

After reading it I thought "...well what were you expecting?, the keys to the house of Larry Ellison also?". It has interesting information for a non hacker like me, but much of the security problems are in the Oracle source code, and therefore there is not much I can do about it. Yes, now I know what not to do in the new code I program. You have to be a programmer to make sense of the code listings and have seen like dumps of snifers before. The language used by the author is clear for me.

Hope this helps

5 out of 5 stars Nice to read a book with no waffle !!!.......2007-03-19

Have just read this book this week and it was a nice read, especialy after some of the c***p I have been reading lately!

Basicaly - If your systems estate has Oracle - Then you MUST read this.

I like this book, its good and the author really does know his stuff - its a light weight (easy to carry) book and good value for money

Some nice C / Java Snipets - so it helps if you know C.

5 out of 5 stars This book is like a knife... you can cut the bread or you can kill with it..........2007-02-10

When I have started with this book I was amazed and afraid both. By this book all those tricks of SQL injections in Oracle has started to be a public knowledge. So this book is like a knife... you can cut the bread or you can kill with it. :) But let's be honest. It is always better to know especially when you are DBA, because of you are always far behind the attackers who probably spend their lifetime on browsing the code for security flaws. For that reason everyone how is responsible for practical Oracle security should read this book and learn how to defend. I belive that this book will grow in the future and will provide more & more examples. That is the game we use to play. New releases, new bugs, new flaws, new workarounds and finally some vendor final fixes. That is how oracle security process cycle should work. It is worth to be mentioned that in terms of quality, David Litchfield has started completly new period in cycle.

5 out of 5 stars Oracle Hacker's Handbook review.......2007-01-25

The Oracle Hacker's Handbook (OHH) is a collection of techniques that could be used by an attacker to gain unauthorised access to an Oracle database server upto and including 10gR2. Most of these techniques are currently not public, so OHH is both new knowledge for an attacker and vital warning to those responsible for securing Oracle servers.
In a nutshell the new attacks include how to gain the version number remotely, brute force usernames, gain passwords/hashes from the OS, attack the listener, escalate privilege internally through PLSQL Packages and Triggers both directly and indirectly as well as defeating VPD. These attacks are illustrated both directly and through application server. By using these techniques and by accessing the Oracle files directly through the OS an attacker would be able to gain DBA privileges on most secured servers. Additionally using the code examples included an attacker could gain password hashes and then the actual DBA clear text password from the network using the password decryption code included. This will work even with complex quoted passwords.
This is the most effective public analysis of security vulnerabilities in Oracle products so far.
OHH is a technical book and not really an introduction to the subject though it could be picked up reasonably quickly as the text avoids unnecessary jargon.
The book could be enhanced by including more on defense strategies, such as, how to prepare and respond to an attack where the attacker has gained the clear text DBA password.
OHH has a free download site for pre-written proof of concept code which will helps avoid unnecessary typing. From a general readability point of view the book is concise and to the point. The sections are logically laid out and the examples have worked when tested. I would recommend those involved in Oracle security to read this book as soon as they can.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome to Red Hat.......2007-08-11

This is a good book to go through if you're already a serious Linux user. If not, become one or take a class instead. The book starts with a quick over view of the basic skills for which you won't be tested but will need to finish the exam (like using vim). It then proceeds through the exam objectives from hardware to system to applications (bottom up). At the end of each chapter are a 'Two Minute Drill' and a self test. The two minute drills is a bulleted-list summary of the chapter and the self exam is in the fill-in-the-blank format, but even then it's a little inadequate for the actual exam.

5 out of 5 stars Very well done, comprehensive prep book........2007-08-01

I read Edition 5 of this book right before taking the RH300 prep course, and it helped a great deal. The book alone may or may not be enough to pass the exam, unless you already fully understand things like SELinux.
Jang provides many useful lab exercises in the book, so you should download VMware Server and CentOS 5!! Going through these labs is what makes the book a good learning tool.
But in conjunction with the RH300 class, this book is outstanding. Highly recommended.

Hello
I had the chance to write this review after buying this great book.
Heard lots about the author, M. Jang, i can't tell you guys; he knows the stuff more than Red Hat People!
If you going to RHCE Certification, This book is all what you need, simply coz it covers the system from A to Z, this book is a magic!
Not only for your Certification, but as a reference too, you will need it sooner or later, after passing the RHCE exam (Which is guaranteed with this book) and while you are in the field, this book is a MUST to add to your tool built.
Thanks Mr. Jang for this great Book, i will be a loyal customer to you after what i saw in this great Book.
My money well spent.

Sincerely

Review of the Fifth Edition, out of the box: Despite what the summary from the Author states above, this book comes with no CD. The PDF version of the book, which I used heavily for reading on the train, is no longer a part of this product. The sample tests are now paper and pencil.

I will read this book, but I will not pre-order again from this publisher again.

I only bought this book a few days ago, so I'll have to update this review when I'm further along. BUT-- one warning: The online appendices (including info on setting up virtual machines using XEN for practice) are nowhere to be found. The link in the book is apparently outdated, and no amount of searching the McGraw Hill website uncovered the downloadable content.

I'm sure they'll correct this error eventually, but if you're planning on buying and using this book today, be warned!
