Briday Gowns: How to make the Wedding Dress of your Dreams.......2007-05-15
The book arrived quickly and in great condition. It looks like it has lots of information to help with making my daughter's wedding gown...I'll begin sewing in September.
bridal gowns; how to make the wedding dress of your dreams.......2006-08-07
Very informative I will use the book alot
Wonderful Resource.......2006-02-01
I am in the Bridal Alterations business and also sew weddings on the side. I am just starting out and wanted to learn more about the insides of wedding gowns. I have used other books by these women (Fit for Real People) to teach sewing classes in local fabric stores and knew they'd put out a great product. Inside they tell you what fabrics to use for interlining, interfacing, step by step construction, patern fitting, and more. There's even a checklist for constructing a wedding gown and yardage and instructions for making petticoats. I REALLY recommend this book!
A Good Guide, But Know How to Sew.......2002-12-12
I was toying with the idea of making my own dress and bought this book. The author is very knowledgeable and the text is well-written. However, if you are a novice you do not want to ACTUALLY attempt a dress without either a.)guidance, or b.)other books to walk you through. This is written for those who truly understand patterns and sewing. However, if you don't sew it is a great book to understand what things you should be looking for if you are having it made by a dressmaker, and the types of fabric/necklines/veils, etc. If you're expecting a step-by-step this is not the book for you.
Wonderful!.......2000-06-07
Well written, clearly illustrated, great on all the details. Obviously written by a pro who is very creative! Highly recommended even if you don't plan to sew your own--you will get lots of ideas to have the perfect dress made for your special day!

Book Description
One of the most admired women in the world, Grace Kelly (1929–1982) is remembered for her beauty, poise, and style. Her “fairy-tale” wedding to Prince Rainier of Monaco in 1956 was one of the most celebrated of the century. To commemorate its 50th anniversary, this lovely book tells the story behind her wedding gown, cap, veil, shoes, and prayer book—all given by the new princess to the Philadelphia Museum of Art shortly after the ceremony.
Philadelphia-born Grace Kelly rocketed to Hollywood stardom, becoming a major box-office draw and winning an Academy Award. She also was an icon of classic American style, which became known as the “Grace Kelly Look.” After examining the development of the star’s on- and off-screen style, the book focuses on her magnificent wedding dress, designed by Helen Rose and made by MGM Studios under top secret security. Public interest in the star’s wedding dress was intense, and it remains one of the most popular objects in the Museum’s collection.
Stunning color images detail the wedding dress, accessories, and attendants’ dresses, which are also owned by the Museum. Numerous historical photographs illustrate the actress’s career, style, and famous wedding in Monaco.

A book for the True "Princess Grace Wedding" afficionado!.......2007-07-01
I, for one, think that Grace Kelly was the epitome of the most beautiful, elegant brides of the modern edge...even to Princess Diana..that dress and the work that went into it is mindblowing. I've seen the dress in person and it TRULY is BREATHTAKINGLY stunning! The lace, alone, in this modern age (although no longer available) would be over $10K ALONE! I plan to copy some of Grace's elegance in my very own wedding...a Rose Point Lace garter, the beautiful Juliet Cap...all I can say is this: It's not a Grace Kelly Bio--this is strictly dedicated to the dress and it's making: fabrics and laces used and how they were all put together. Truly and informative book besides being a wonderful reference as well as a Keepsake. At LEAST 5 stars on this. Check it out..you won't be disappointed!
A Beautiful Depiction of Grace Kelly's Wedding Dress.......2006-10-08
This book gives a very detailed representation of Grace Kelly's Wedding Dress. It also gives lots of details of the events leading up to her wedding day. It is not a biography of her life. It focuses on her wedding day and the events leading up to it with the wedding day itself being the culmination.
Grace Kelly - Icon of Style.......2006-09-06
I was a bit disappointed when I received the book as I thought it would have more colored pictures of her wardrobe. Many were in black and white. The photos of her wedding dress were lovely though -- I guess that was the true focus of the book.
a good book about princess Grace wedding.......2006-07-05
i think this book does not give us a different view about Grace Kelly. It is only a book related to the wedding dress and some miscelaneous comentaries about her life. You can find some good photos about Grace, but nothing else. If you are a great Grace fan like me, perhaps you would like to buy next book about Grace : Grace Kelly, a life in pictures, by Pierre Henry Verlhac.
A must read.......2006-05-01
If, like me, you are a huge Grace Kelly fan, you will not want to be without this book.
It goes into detail about Grace's wardrobe, and in particular the wedding dress. I have read a great deal about Grace Kelly, and this book managed to surprise me with quite a bit of new details.
Finally, there are some great pictures of the wedding dress- which is probably the nicest wedding dress in history!
Book Description
July 29,1981—The Royal Wedding of HRH Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer is one of the iconic moments of the twentieth century. It remains a day embedded in the memory of millions of people around the world—over 800 million people were watching at home on television.
Of all the images from the day itself, the one that springs to mind immediately is that of Diana's arrival at St. Paul's Cathedral in the glass carriage and the public's first glimpse of the best kept secret of the day: the royal wedding dress.
For the young designers, David Emanuel and Elizabeth Emanuel creating Diana's wedding dress was "a fairytale come true." Having only been introduced to Lady Diana Spencer in February 1981, the Emanuels quickly became one of her favored designers, which lead to a telephone call in March 1981 that would change their lives forever.
Officially commissioned by Buckingham Palace, the Emanuels set about designing a dress that would never be forgotten. Each step of the process was completed in total secrecy to ensure that no one, especially the world's press, got a glimpse of the famous dress until that glorious July day.
Customer Reviews:
"A Dress for Diana" is a Book to Treasure.......2007-08-15
I was amazed to find this book, which I had never seen, on Amazon for a wonderful price.
Filled with lovely anecdotes on all the wedding details, this book was written before the "fairy-tale marriage" was revealed to be a nightmarish sham of deciet and betrayal. If Diana was starry-eyed, so were we--and we wanted to be.
A labor of love, "A Dress for Diana" is rich with lavish details, such as the history of the silks and laces used and where they came from, close-ups of laces, shoes, patterns, and toilles(dress samples made in muslin during the design process.)
Did you know that the Emmanuels made a perfect miniature of Diana's dress as a gift for her, as did her shoe designer? Nor did I, until I read this book.
"A Dress for Diana" is a singular and fascinating look at an unforgettable time in history. If you love Her Royal Highness,Diana, Princess of Wales, or if you have an interest in English history, you will want this book, for it is one to treasure. The Emanuels have authored an exquisite tribute with a unique point of view.
A closer look.......2007-07-30
This is an excellent book for those of us who watched the royal wedding at that time--and were so fascinated with that dress--and train. Although there were unexpected problems with the dress such as how do you fit a dress with an exceptionally long train into the small royal wedding carriage?--nevertheless, the dress was one of a kind--and forever will fascinate Diana fans throughout the world.
The book shares the moment-by-moment details of the making of the dress as well as some other previously unpublished photos of the dress.
A must book for Diana fans!
Dress For Diana.......2007-07-28
The Book is very very good. I really like knowing how the Emanuel's came up with the idea for Diana's dress.
beautiful memories.......2007-07-12
A great book to own and a great keepsake for all times. I remember the wedding well and all the glory and pagentry surrounding that beautiful July day. Never again will a dress be made and worn with so much style and all the unselfish love and care that went into making this beautiful masterpiece for all the world to see. But not for Diana herself could this particular gown or memorable event have gotten off the ground and into the pages of history. Diana picked the best- the Emanuels to make her this beautiful creation and Diana's own beauty to capture the creation and magic of the most recorded wedding day ever. Pat C, New York
A Dress For Diana.......2007-05-07
This book is just beautiful!
I read it in two sittings. It is very well written and just takes you back in time to that awesome spring when Diana was waiting to be married to Charles.
It sounds like it was a true labor of love for the Emanuels to make this dress, but oh my, what a total hassle to have to be so secretive because of the papparazzi intrusions. They all had such patience to see it all through.
I'm very happy the Emanuels decided to celebrate what would have been Diana's 25th wedding anniversary with this beautifully worded book (and lovely pictures, too!)

Customer Reviews:
Just a coffee table book.......2006-05-10
Please don't buy this book if you need honest, reasonable tips for your wedding. This has some beautiful photographs and makes a nice coffee table book but it is waaay to huge to lug around as one may wish to do. Photos are nice but that is basically it. In addition, I wish it had more photographs of gowns. Doesn't have as many photographs of a variety of gowns as I had hoped.
nothing special.......2006-01-15
Same old stuff nothing different.
Makes Itself Helpful By Presenting Each Aspect Of A Successful Wedding In Minimalistic Sections.......2005-09-25
This book became the Bible of a certain bride I knew when she was getting married in a VERY big service and I was one of her friends involved early on in much of the planning. We had about three other mass market wedding books as well as a hired advisor/planner but those were quickly cast aside in favor of this one. Soon more faith was placed in this book than in tomorrow's sunrise. "What's Vera say about..." became the catch-phrase of the season.
Vera Wang and her staff not only create beautiful wedding dresses, but they know the occasion of wedding from A to Z. Fair warning, this book does pre-suppose that some serious money is going to be invested in the service and reception, but for those who are planning a once in a lifetime event they want special in every way, I know of no other source I'd put more faith in than this. Everything is compartmentalized and arranged so that the important aspects merit more attention than those that can simply wait till later. I also liked the "take it easy, things will be all right" message that kept popping up almost subliminally in the little reassurances that were scattered about. Those were really appreciated by those of us who were dealing with a perpetually freaked out bride, and in a few cases, made a real difference.
I'm in favor of something more minimalist when it comes to weddings, but for those who want an elaborate service and don't mind spending a lot of money to get it, then this is a book that prove worthwhile more times than you'll be able to count.
Elegant Fabulousness.......2005-09-15
Beautifully presented... a wonderful showcase of blissfully simple yet incredibly elegant gowns... also features glimpses into fabulous famous brides & their weddings.... very inspirational & truly lovely ....
A beautiful coffee-table style book with some helpful info........2003-02-14
As other reviewers have said, this is a gorgeous book. It's very oversized--larger even than most coffee-table style books--and has lovely pictures throughout which cover every aspect of wedding celebrations. Included, of course, are many samples of Wang's own work as a bridal gown designer as well as photos from her own wedding. As a wedding planner, however, this book is less useful. Although Wang does include her own commentary, some of which is interesting and helpful, there really isn't enough information for the book to be used as comprehensive planner. Furthermore, the organization of the book is somewhat confusing, as it does not follow a typical wedding planning chronology. Despite these issues, brides-to-be and others are likelyto enjoy this book, if only to "look at the pictures."

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful, if simple.......2007-09-26
I was surprised that this book has gotten so many poor customer reviews. I am quite satisfied with it. The author and description did not promise complex pieces, so I don't understand why people were so disappointed that most of the items in the book are fairly simple to knit. Although most of the projects are easy, there are definitely some more difficult ones, such as the wedding dress (which is gorgeous, and I am considering making it in color to wear as a formal gown). The simpler projects are also charming-- I am planning on making the Belted Tunic Dress for myself, and I have already put the book to work in its true purpose by making the weekend bags for my cousin's wedding. The Sexy Nightie, Honeymoon Sweater, and Wedding Night Robe are also all projects I would consider making. This book is not for those looking for extremely complex knitting, but anyone who likes Suss Cousin's signature simple but stylish knits will enjoy this book.
Boring, Bland, Over-rated, Uninspiring.......2007-04-29
I was very disappointed with this book which I eagerly awaited, expecting beautiful, elegant designs like Sowerby's Victorian Lace or the designs from Fiddlesticks Knitting. Instead I found very plain, boring patterns of stocking stitch, with some ribbing and feather and fan- nothing above the level of beginner. These are the type of patterns that you can download for free from Lion Brand's website. Some of the ideas like the wedding veil would be beautiful in a vintage lace pattern- instead it is plain stocking stitch- boring and tacky. These designs are a waste of nice yarn and good photogrpahy.
Weddiing Knits.......2007-03-17
Has a variety of projects for the wedding party and bride. I found just what I needed and more.
Clean designs and luxurious yarns.......2007-02-15
I'm surprised at the other bad reviews too. I really like it. I'm not getting married, but this book is full of chic sweaters, shrugs, wraps & tiny purses that are very wearable and nicely fitted. I've leafed through her Hollywood Knits and Home Knits books and THEY seem pretty boring. I've been in her store several times and these knits are totally her style. It's mostly fine knits created from subtly colored, luxury blend yarns using alpaca, mohair, cotton and viscose. It's kind of lame that all the yarns used are from her personal SUSS line, but yardages and material contents are given so that you can make appropriate substitutions. I plan on using different high-end yarns with the patterns to give them a little more pizazz. The designs are unique and classic enough to wear for a long time without being too trendy, so they are worth investing time and money into. I knit up the Bridesmaid Wrap sweater in a variegated light mohair yarn (see pics). I think the styles are versatile enough to personalize in many ways.
Beautiful Knitting.......2007-01-12
I thought this book was beautiful. I was suprised to read the poor reviews.
Book Description
Being a bridesmaid is one of the greatest honors a dear friend can bestow. But actually wearing the dress the bride picks out? That's the true test of friendship. You Can Wear It Again pays loving tribute to fifty years of bridesmaids' dresses, as featured in real-life weddings. The product of both fashion trends and the bride's whims, bridesmaids' dresses may take the form of medieval costume, complete with wimple; slip dresses with real feathered wings to transform maids into true angels; or the ruffled peach taffeta with puff sleeves that so dominated the 1980s. Whatever the look, you can be sure it's been in and out of fashion more than once. Some lessons are never learned. The perfect gift for current and former bridesmaids, You Can Wear It Again isn't just a showcase of bridal fashions, but a testament to the selfless women everywhere who help the bride's dreams come true.
Customer Reviews:
Great gift for your dedicated bridemaids..........2007-07-30
I bought these books to give to my friends as a way to ask them to be one of my bridesmaids. It was a hit!!! The pictures get funnier and funnier with each turn of the page. It only serves as inspiration to strive a wedding that won't look ridiculous in 25 years... impossible!
Not for Bridesmaids in their 20's.......2007-06-19
I bought 4 of these books to give to my bridesmaids as part of their gift at the rehearsal dinner. It's a cute book/good concept, but I was expecting more modern pictures. There are some classic giant-sleeved 80's dresses, but for the most part, the pictures all look like they are from the 1960's or 1970's. Don't get me wrong - the dresses are hideous to someone in their 20's, but those were just the styles back then. The fewer modern dresses in the book just aren't that bad - I've seen/worn much worse. I think this book would be funnier to someone in their 50's looking back than to young brides/bridesmaids today.
Funny!.......2007-06-10
I bought this as a gag gift for my Mom because we always joke about horrible bridesmaid dress choices. She loved it - it was a little small, but good as a side-gift.
Lots of fun!.......2007-01-12
My daughter is getting married and wanted to do something fun for her bridesmaids. We saw this book and new we had found the perfect thing. The pictures are "a hoot" and the book was the beginning of a fun way to say a huge "thank you" to her friends for being with her at this time. She sent a copy of the book to each one. We think you will enjoy the book. We certainly did!
Three-time bridesmaid laughed myself silly!.......2006-09-07
Before I start, I must include this disclaimer: I'm an unabashed booster of this book, as Ms. Ilasco selected five photos of weddings I shot (the "Kathy and Carla" photo is one), and four photos of weddings I was in. But I am only one of dozens of contributors to this amazing collection!
I thought my mustard dress was bad. I thought the enormous puffy sleeves on the blue dress were ridiculous. I had no idea that wedding party attire could be as appallingly amusing as some of the examples in the book! When I received the finished book, I laughed harder with the flip of each page.
If you've suffered through a polyester or taffeta nightmare, or selected dresses for your friends you realized in retrospect were totally unsuited to their body types, you will enjoy this book.
Book Description
Filled with entrancing text and lavish, full-color photographs, I Do: 100 Years of Wedding Fashion offers a captivating review of the glorious and glamorous in bridal gowns during the last century. Readers will see how the ostentatious wedding gowns of the Edwardian era transformed into the knee-length, Chanel-inspired flapper gowns of the 1920s. By the 1930s, Hollywood reigned. Film-star weddings, publicized both on the silver screen and in fan magazines, brought a touch of glamour to the Depression-era bride. The 1940s war bride had to cope with make-do concoctions of muslin and parachute silk, while the '50s brought back romance, influenced by Dior's New Look and the American "sweetheart" line. And despite the rejection of marital bliss by the hippie counterculture and new feminism of the '60s, marriage survives and the white wedding is here to stay. Today, 21st-century brides are looking for the sophistication of couture fashion and the sexiness of today's sleek designs and sublime fabrics. This mesmerizing guide features 350 full-color photos of such famous brides as Princess Diana, Elizabeth Taylor, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, Grace Kelly, and hundreds more. From the traditional to the avant garde, the wacky to the sublime, this is a magnificent source of fashion inspiration for brides-to-be, their mothers, and wedding professionals everywhere.
Customer Reviews:
Gorgeous, but heavy on the last 20 years.......2006-07-13
This beautiful, full color books features stunningly photographed dresses of all shapes, sizes and colors with a well written and extensive history of gowns and related traditions. The photo spreads are lavish, and not at the expense of the text of the book. But as some other reviewers have mentioned, each time period starts out with a few examples of the appropriate vintage gowns and then shifts into photos of modern gowns interpreting or inspired by that period, which is a little disappointing. Unless you're a designer or a collector this book isn't worth the nearly $90 sticker price, but if you can get it used or at the bargain price (as I did), it's a beautiful coffee table book with enough text to keep you reading for quite awhile!
a brides celebration.......2006-01-29
this book had all ages of wedding celebrations and some really great pictures of many years and many celebrities as well as us common folk. I loved looking back at all the great fashions and memories. This would make an excellent gift book to a newly engaged person as she begins to plan a wedding. clinta ingraham
nice trip down memory land.......2006-01-15
Some interesting studies for designers
excellent to browse.......2005-12-28
I got this book literally two days ago for Christmas. I love it. I had it on my amazon wish list, and somebody bought it for me. I expected the book to be much smaller -I was happily suprised at the size and thickness! As a browser, it has spectacular large photos.
I am am in the wedding industry and I did recognize some of the more recent photographs from designers' advertising campaigns. I love some of the older photographs, and old sketches. I do think there was an excellent representation of gowns from each decade. Most of the photos seem to come from the fashion industry or pop culture archives. There are only a few more photos from real everyday brides' weddings.
I plan to read the text cover to cover this weekend. So far the captions and the layout I notice are straightforward, organized chronologically. It should be a short read like any coffee table book. The book covers the decades of the 20th century. Each decade shows representations from popular culture, from everyday weddings, from marketing campagins, as well as some designers' over-the-top "visions." I did not expect it to read like "history" book like some of the other feedback. What I expected to get out of it was an inspiring visual browse, and overview of wedding fashions of the 20th century, and I was very satisfied in that respect.
Classy .......2005-11-24
This book is definitely modern, presenting sofisticated and classy designs. It focuses on how modern designers are inspired by the past. Unfortunately there's not a lot of documentation, 98% of the dresses are modern, but brides looking for ideas will find it very useful. If you're more interested in the past, I suggest you look up Maria McBride-Mellinger.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful Quotes.......2004-09-26
The book has various photos of gowns dating back in history and until now, some photos are more wedding snapshots. It has a little bit of history behind the wedding dress and what i found the most exciting was that on every second page was quotations about celebrating love and marriage. I found the quotations more interesting than the photos themselves.
A beginnes book.......2002-07-06
I rate the book as being very good, but it could be better. It had nice style, but not quite what I was looking for.

For the Confident Sewer.......2007-06-16
I purchased Veiled in Beauty to go on my shelf of resource materials, you know the shelf you go to when the coffee hasn't kicked in at 7 in the morning?! I must admit I am very thankful that I have millinery experience as you are not shown how to make the foundation pieces such as juliet caps, crescents, wired frames and so forth. You are shown how to cover these pieces though, utilising a number of methods such as crinolin(horse hair is crinolin out here - don't trust my spelling of it), covering a buckram frame (book suggests underlining fabric with flannel, a item not easily come by in Australia any more- try pellon, a fine wadding used under quilt tops to enhance embroidery etc).
Veiled in Beauty contains some beautifully taken photographs. It also features a number of illustrations that clearly demonstrate numerous styles of veils. If you are patient, you can match some of the suggested styles and trims to the photos. You are shown how to make veils, such as single tiered veils, two-tiered veils, veils with a pouf, bouffant veils and so forth. Also features instructions for mantillas. Lace applications are demonstrated as well as edging techniques. You are shown how to make continuous bias.
Something that may be interest - you are shown how to make your veil removable from your head piece. That way you can get extra value out of your cocktail base by wearing it at your reception or even to other events after your big day. You're also shown how to make barrette bows- this might be a great idea for your flower girls? Don't forget the wreathes, made from fresh flowers either.
To succesfully use this book I would suggest that you must have a fair amount of patients and an ability to follow the written word. The instructions are clear, but it does no good if you are like me and just want to get right into it.
Like every resource, DIY, style guide book, etc- what you can do with what they sohw you is limited only by you. Let your imagination take over and make sure you purchase some surplus nylon illusion to experiment on before committing to your final piece. Veiled in Beauty is a lovely book that I wouldn't hesitate reccommending to someone who has a little bit of time on their hands. Don't buy this if you expect to be able to produce your bridal head wear in a day and are relatively new to sewing. It might end up more pricey then paying someone to make your veil in the first place.
This book is a 3 and a half star for me - like another reviewer wrote, it just lacks something that I can not put my finger on. When I do, I'll come back and edit this review.
It is Okay.......2007-04-16
I bought this book after reading the other reviews. I thought that this one would be better than 'I Do Veils So Can You.' This book has better pictures and some ideas that the other did not, but not terribly much. I do think that those extra ideas were worth buying the book for. It has more infomation on making a wire frame and decorating the headpiece. I did have a hard time understanding some of the directions for making different types of veils. I am still searching for a book with better information on making veils.
A comprehensive guide to veils and headpieces.......2006-07-13
I ordered this book at the same time as "I Do Veils and so Can You," and this book puts that one to shame. This book does a great job of demonstrating how to cut the different shapes of veils from tulle, easy to follow instructions for various headpiece construction techniques, and a wide variety of options for embellishments and finishing. There are lots of options presented in terms of fabrics and materials, and the book suggests actual things you can buy at your local fabric store. Customer Reviews:
Slightly out of date..........2007-09-23
As other reviewers have said, this is for the bride, but may be helpful to wedding photographers. As a wedding photographer (beginning assistant) I found the poses Mr. Sint suggests timeless. I like that he also explained 'why' you should do the pose: IE: Hold your bouquet here rather than here for a more slimming effect. Tilt your head slightly downward to prevent the glare on your glasses... pretty elementary stuff, so professional photographers may find the book useless. Mr. Sint seems to downplay digital as being inferior to film and that's the main thing that really 'out-dates' this book. As do some of the pictures ... BUT for a first-time bride it's nice to have it all there before you: without a lot of advertising in-between like the bridal magazines. Your 'must have' shots list is there, as well as explaining different types of wedding photography at different budget levels.
out of date even when published.......2005-04-26
A bride purchasing this book to get advice and information on wedding photography will be provided with grossly outdated information on digital photography. It is amazing that a book last published in 2004 would provide so much misinformation on digital photography and no information on the wide range of digitally created wedding albums available.
All newpaper photographers, many fashion photographers, and most wedding photographers have either switched to digital or are in the process of doing so. Digital is less forgiving of photographers mistakes, and some photographers having become comfortable over a period of many years and made a sizeable investiment in time and money in medium format camera equipment, are reluctant to start the learning and purchasing process all over again with digital equipment.
The top wedding photographers espousing a more creative approach to wedding photography, including Joe Bussink, Becker, Bambi Cantrell, and Denis Regie long ago made the switch to digital. What Sint fails to mention is that with digital equipment photographers are not limited by how many rolls of film they can carry. A traditional photographer working with mdium format equipment will be happy to end the day with 300 images. A photographer using digital equipment covering a typical wedding will end the day with over 2000 images. More moments captured, and the option to have any image in color or Black & White or both (color for mom's book, and B&W for the bride and groom's album).
Sint also talks about the short life of inkjet prints, though these are sprayed with a laquer to extend their life beyond the rated 25 years (which assumes they sit exposed to bright sunlight over thouse 25 years, or the problem with color negative film as it ages and becomes brittle. The commercial printers using high end Epson or HP printers produce prints with an expected life of over 75 years, and with digital it is not a problem to produce a new print if the old one hung on the wall in bright sunlight fades.
Most wedding photographers provide a copy of the high resolution digital negatives to their clients on their wedding anniversary at no charge. No conventional film based wedding photographer will give up their medium format negatives unless it is for a hefty fee.
As of 2004 when this book was published there are a number of digital cameras that produce better images than is possible with medium format film cameras. And Sint fails to mention that 95% of the brides only get an album with the most common size being a 10x10 inch with the largest picture a 8x10 print.
The most dated information and glaring omission is Sint's coverage of wedding albums. Most brides will spend more than half the price of their wedding photography on the cost of an album, and Sint provides no mention of the digitally created albums. There is also a revolution in wedding albums that has resulted from the availability of high quality digital negatives. Coffee table book style albums that have each page printed can contain any number of images, can have artistic backgrounds, off center placement and all the other imaging one associates with modern magazines, available to the bride at less expense than she would pay for a traditional wedding album with individual prints pasted into individual and expensive mount pages. This approach enables the skilled photographer to tell the story of the wedding day instead of just present a collection of posed stiff pictures like what was done for the brides grandmother and grandfather.
Taking film negatives and having them scanned to produce digital negatives adds a great deal of expense and produces images that are inferior to "first generation" images produced by professional grade cameras available for the past several years.
If the bride takes a look at the images produced by a wedding photographer using film cameras, she will notice that the reception shots where the lighting is usually quite low, are taken using either a great deal of flash which produces an unnatural look, or were shot with grainy high speed Black & White film. The look of grainy B&W images can be quite nice but it is not something that works all the time. With the current generation of digital cameras color images can be taken in low light situations that with film cameras would require B&W film.
Digital also greatly reduces the risk of malfunctioning equipment during the wedding, and eliminates the risk of film not being delivered to the lab, or the lab incorrectly processing the film and destroying the only copy of the pictures taken during the day. The bride should be asking the photographer whether they are covered for "errors and omissions" and verify that their insurance policy is current. Having a full set of backup equipment is even more important. Wedding photographers do not get a "second take" and if one piece of gear fails they need a backup so they can keep on taking pictures.
Sint should be recommending that the bride look at the images produced by the photographers for other brides, examine the photographers' different styles and approaches through the images they have taken for previous weddings and select one that is compatible with that of the bride. The prospective bride should look at the wedding albums actually produced to see if the end product is what she wants. What equipment the photographer used to capture the images, make the prints, and produce the album is largely irrelevant.
The Bride's Guide to Wedding Photography.......2004-05-24
This is a MUST BUY for EVERY bride. Whether your photography plans are a disposable camera or a carriage-trade professional photographer, Steve Sint tells brides how to get the best wedding pictures. Even if you're already hired a photographer, he tells you how to stand, how to wear your hair and makeup, how to choose a wedding gown, even how to walk in it, to ensure that you get the best photos possible. As Steve says in his book, the ring and the photos are about all you'll still have 50 years later, so choosing a wedding photographer is one of the most important decisions made by every bride. Don't forget -- Steve literally wrote the book on wedding photography. His "Wedding Photography: Art, Business and Style" is the Bible of weddding photographers across the country. Now he shares his expertise with the bride. This book should become as standard as a copy of Bride magazine. As a professional writer and part-time professional photographer, I highly recommend this book.
Just What I Needed.......2004-05-24
This book is great, it really helped me with my wedding plans, more than just picking photographers, it also has other suggestions about flowers, gowns, and timing for the day. The author obviously knows what he is talking about and knows the bride's concerns. Also, there are beautiful pictures. It looks like a fancy magazine. I am so happy I bought this book. Even my fiance read parts of it. I recommend this to anyone planning a wedding whether it is big or small. This covers it all and gives practical advice.
Great book! Not just for brides, but for photopgraphers too........2004-04-04
The author spares no detail with his complete guide for the perfect wedding memories all the way to making sure everyone looks their best within any budget.
His clear, relaxed writing style never speaks down to the reader and kept me interested from beginning to end. There are countless ideas, lists, and suggestions that are paired with great photos to demonstrate his recommendations throughout.
I bought this book as a gift for my niece since she is getting married. And, because I am my families "official photographer" she asked me to help. Now, after reading it cover to cover, I will have to buy her a second copy so that my gift to her is brand new and not dog-eared.
The book is jam packed with great information. It can be helpful to all brides whether they hire a professional or just have a relative (like me!) or a friend take their
pictures. The author went so far as to include info on wedding gowns, flower options and simple things that can make a big difference, like how to stand to look your best. I just loved all the pictures in this book. It gave me lots of ideas to work with. Every bride should have this on their bridal registry wish list.... and any photographer (pro or otherwise) should have one too.
