Great for nature lovers and armchair traverlers! .......2006-12-28
Fabulous book! The text is very interesting and educational, and it explains the scientific aspects of the National Parks and their land very well. The photos are gorgeous and made me want to visit every single park! :-) They really show some of the awesome beauty of God's handiwork. I highly recommend this book to all outdoor enthusiasts, lovers of nature and science and fellow armchair travelers. The book also contains helpful contact information for planning a visit to the parks. A great read and a great book to enjoy!
spectacular visuals, excellent text.......2003-02-07
This book is a spectacular visual text to some of the American National Parks. The size of the photos, and their photographic quality, are just excellent. The photos are right up there with National Geographic-type quality. In addition, the accompaning text gives ecological insights to where and why this part of the United States was designated and saved as a National Park. The book gives short but insightful accompanying text for each of the Parks that are presented to the reader. The only problem is, unfortunately, the organization of the chapters, and a very skimpy table of contents, and the reader can get easily annoyed with these two problems. It is hard to understand why the publisher made such errors, as the problems are very obvious, and the whole book suffers as a result. It is a beautiful book covering many of the National Parks, with super photos and very good college level text, and if you can put up with the problems of a missing table of contents, this book is a great collection of art, ecology, and the National Parks of the USA. A 5-star for the photos and accompanying text, and a 3 for a useless table of contents. Sorry, but the publisher made major mistakes in putting this otherwise spectacular book together. But I will still give the book a 5-star anyway. The photos and text are just too good to give this book anything less than a 5-star.
Spectacular Presentation of Natural Wonder.......2002-06-08
Paul Schullery presents a book filled with powerful and beautiful images of fifty-six national parks that have been dedicated to the preservation and protection of irreplaceable treasures. This book shows why these parks are so worthy of protection.
Not only are they places where indescribable beauty can be seen, they have also been formed by unique geological forces. From stunning mountain ranges to arid expanses of desert, these are the lands we view, wander in and learn from.
America's National Parks is a celebration of the diversity of national parks throughout the United States. They are grouped according to the geological forces that helped to create them.
Diagrammatic illustrations, important landmarks, travel routes, topographical maps and spectacular full-color photographs illustrate the sheer majestic beauty of nature.
You will also find captivating information to encourage an awareness of the landforms, flora and fauna. Families will also find information to help enhance their vacations at the parks.
Inside the front cover a map of America shows the location of each park I started to remember my trip to the Grand Canyon National Park and my husband's visit to Denali.
Our Treasured Lands
The Rolling Land - Volcanic and Geothermal Forces
The Broken Crust - The Power of Mountain Building
Water Designing Lands - Waves, Caves and Currents
Ice Sculpting Stone - The Carving Power of Glaciers
The Patient Power - Wind and Water Erosion
Weather Shaping Life - Effects of Extreme Climates
This book contains some of the most amazing photographs I've ever seen of America. From pictures of dripstone formations adorning New Mexico's Carlsbad Cavern in New Mexico to Lush Ecosystems shrouded in Fog in the National Park in Washington, these pictures help to vividly describe each park. I remember once having an argument with someone over the fact that there were rainforests near where I lived in Washington and no one would believe me. Well, here is proof!
I was also especially interested in looking up the Painted Desert we visited once on a trip across America after college. At the time, I didn't actually realize I was in the Petrified Forest national Park in Arizona because technically, we were just driving right through and I wasn't paying attention.
This book has helped to bring a new awareness to my own life and also encourages a desire for more exploration. Now I definitely want to see Mount McKinley in person.
Voyageurs National Park looks like a fascinating place to paddle around lonely islands. However, they do say never to skimp on insect repellent. A third of the park is water.
A memento of past visits or an inspiration for future exploration!

Basic in Interpretation.......2007-09-14
When one need to study and learn the basics, this is the original guidebook on guiding! The text is almost quaint (written in the 50's) as are the pictures, but there are still nuggets worth mining.
I found myself highlighting the "do"s and "don't"s that are now features in other fields such as marketing and customer service. There aren't many reference books on the subject of interpretation, so this is a good place to start.
a nice dry introduction into interpreting.......2004-05-04
This book is a nice BASIC introduction for those who know nothing about what interpretation is in relation to a museum. I found it very dry and outdated. The author tries to spice it up a bit with humor and examples of national parks but all in all, i would not recommend it.
interpretation is an art form!.......2004-03-21
Interpretation is the art of making what is presented meaningful to the audience. This book is useful for anyone who wants to get others interested in a subject, whether it is for a presentation, an art exhibit, or the local park's visitor center. If an exhibit, lecture, presentation, or tour does or does not get you interested in the topic, this book will explain most of the reasons why. This is all sound wisdom, offered in the context of museums and national parks. It's easy to read and engaging, employing the principles within.
I. Talk about what is being desplayed/described to the personality or experience of the visitor.
II. Interpretation is revelation based on information.
III. Interpretation is an art.
IV. The goal is provocation, not instruction.
V. Try to present the whole instead of the part.
VI. Don't just dumb it down for kids.
Tilden elaborates on these beautifully, with nice examples.
After reading this book not only do I know how to improve upon my own interpretation, but I can critique other interpretation and at least know when to appreciate a good display when I see one. Just remember that there are more than 6 principles. Use this book to start thinking about interpretation as a skill and an art, instead of the bible of interpretation.
Interpretation for the 21st Century: Fifteen Guiding Principles for Interpreting Nature and Culture is an updated version recommended to me but I haven't read it yet.
Excellent.......2002-01-26
Ok, so in parts you can definitely tell this book was written in the 50's. However most of it is still extremely valid, and extremely useful. I would not hesitate to reccomend it, a very good read for interpreters or interpreters in training.
Required Reading for National Park Service Rangers.......2001-02-23
It's a decent, reasonable somewhat giddy book on interpreting the natural world. It is also practically required that National Park Service ranger's follow Tilden's principles for interpretation. So if you ever want to be a National Park Service Ranger, it'd be great to have this under your belt!

Laboratory Manual in Physical Geology (7th Edition)

Book Description
The breathtaking landscapes of America's national parks reveal the processes that shape our planet.
Many of our national parks, monuments, and seashores were established because of their inspiring geological features. The geysers of Yellowstone, the volcanoes of Hawaii, and the granite peaks of Yosemite bear witness to the "national park idea" as one of our country's greatest contributions to society. Parks and Plates explains the fascinating geological processes that formed the mountain ranges, volcanoes, shorelines, and other dramatic landscapes of America's national treasures.
Robert J. Lillie, a gifted teacher and expert on park geology, takes a unique approach to the subject. By structuring each section of Parks and Plates around major geological features, Lillie highlights geologic patterns across many different parks. He explains these fascinating landforms using examples from over 100 park sites to introduce and illustrate plate tectonics, a simple yet eloquent way to visualize geological processes. Lavishly illustrated throughout with full color photographs, diagrams, and maps, Parks and Plates will enrich the National Park experience for curious travelers and armchair explorers alike. 336 full-color illustrations.

Robert J. Lillie's 'Parks and Plates' is a wonderful book.......2005-12-21
Parks and Plates: The Geology of Our National Parks, Monuments and Seashores clearly and concisely describes the geological processes which formed the most spectacular, familiar and beloved landscapes in America. Balancing the fast-moving text are richly illustrated explanations of geological ideas and terminology and helpful color photographs depicting specific examples. The author identifies which parks reflect which geological forces leaving the reader with a desire to pack up and visit each park.

What a beautiful book! Covering all of our nation's National Parks, David Muench's photography is incredible. From the Great Sand Dunes to Canyonlands, from Carlsbad to Glacier, he's captured our nation's most beautiful land. Great quality book--I immediately wanted to hike up a mountain.

Not good for roaming RVers.......2007-07-24
We are experienced users of campground guides(10 years full time RV) and we love forest service campgrounds. We eagerly anticipated the arrival of this guide, found it almost impossible to use for our purposes because of the way it is organized. It would be better for folks using their local National Forest rather than for roamers, and especially good for hikers.
Best Natl Forest Camping Directory.......2005-09-03
This is the best directory for National Forest camping. The forest service has been improving their campgrounds over the years. This directory will no longer be updated and printed. (...)
coleman national forest campground guide.......2005-08-23
Book is very informative. We have a big rig and cannot go to all campgrounds because of the size. This book is a great tool for us. We know what to expect before we get there!!
Happy Rving.......2005-07-12
Its a sham theres not much National Forest left
i this country Thank But the book will help find
some campgrounds
Would have liked better maps and descriptions.......2004-04-10
Great guide but to help find the locations make sure you take a detailed map like Delorme or Coleman Atlas for specific forest roads and locations. The maps in this are VERY general. I liked the fact that camp altitudes are included. This can make a differance if snow or heat is expected and a major factor when I chose.

National Park Mysteries.......2007-04-24
I really love this mystery series. They always take place at a national park and provides enough history and geography to be educational yet be included in the book as to not be preachy. Kids love the varied plots that come from being in different parts of the country as well as learn about different points of view. This book in particular pointed out the split between people who wanted to have wild wolves in the park as a natural predator and those who were ranchers who feared for their livestock. The book has a lot of suspence and yet is not too long. Great for early chapter book readers.
Ryan's review.......2006-09-24
Wolf Stalker
I thought Wolf Stalker was an amazing book it made me want to keep reading and reading and it made me want to keep guessing what was going to happen next.

In this story Olivia gets called to Yellowstone National Park to investigate on a wolf attack that killed a dog. The aslo bing a foster kid named Troy. When their parents leave to looks and the scene where the dead dog was. Troy runs of to look for a wolf and then Jack and Ashly follow him but then they see two wolfs chase a group of deer and then ashley saw a man shoot one of the wolfs. Then the wounded wolf gets up and limps away. Then Troy runs off after it and Jack and Ashley follow him. Next thing they no they are in the middle of Yellowstone with Troy and the wounded wolf.
I would recomen this book to a 10-13 yr old or a person who loves mystery books.
Wolf Stalker: Who will it get next?.......2004-10-04
Review of the Wolf stalker
Have you ever read a book and liked it so much, you wanted to critique it? Well I have, and I want to share a book with you.
The title of my book is Wolf Stalker by Gloria Skurzynski. She is a great author and has written ten of these great mysteries. They all go together in order, but each series has different settings. Wolf Stalker was very good and I would like to talk about this first mystery.
The author did a good job of making you feel like you were apart of the story. She was very descriptive and made you want to read on! The tension in the story builds with each suspenseful scene!! I would recommend this book for grades five and six. This book was so good that I didn't think it had any weaknesses.
This book starts out with two kids (twelve year old Jack Landon and his younger sister Ashley). Yellowstone National Park buzzes with rumors about a wolf attack. A stalker runs through the trees. It's dark, and he is ready to kill, but who is the stalker? At this time, Troy Haverson, a teenage foster child who is a troublemaker, came to live with the Landon family. This is because he lost his mother and his father died.
This is a great book if you like suspense and mystery. You will have to read and find out what happens in the Wolf Stalker. Remember, this is only the first out of ten mysteries!
Exciting and Real - A great series for boys or girls.......2003-03-16
This series is wonderful! It has everything a mystery/adventure story should PLUS more.We picked up Wolf Stalker in Yellowstone and have been buying the series ever since. Listen parents, my son is devouring them, he normally is instructed to read but not with these. The books are factual yet fun. Each book is set in a beautiful park that inspire your imagination and makes you want to visit them. I could tell you the valuable lessons they will learn but I just have to say get this series and watch your kid get obsorbed.
A great adventure in Yellowstone Park.......1999-09-16
I am a 3rd grade student and thought this book was great! There were some scary parts with children lost in the woods, I learned a lot about what to do when you are lost in the woods. There were great descriptions of wolves and how they behave.

Jane Goodall might be a household name for most grownups, thanks to her pioneering work with chimpanzees and more recent efforts at habitat preservation. But many kids don't know the Goodall story and will love this chance to hit the ground in Tanzania and learn about the remarkable scientist and her beloved chimp friends. With dozens of vintage photographs, Goodall recounts her early research in Gombe National Park, including a recap of her childhood and how she came to know Louis Leakey and first enter the bush. With clear and careful prose, Goodall explains her findings about chimp communities and communication, the role of hierarchies, and what sort of threats chimpanzees face today. Best of all, Goodall's account always keeps curious young readers in mind, even relating some of her mistakes, such as when she became too close to her subjects and interfered with her own research.
Young protoscientists will appreciate Goodall's frank descriptions, from kerosene-can-assisted dominance displays to her discovery that chimps engage in hunting and warlike behaviors, and hopefully, such detail will inspire further interest in the future of chimpanzees and other threatened species. Proceeds from the book will go to Roots & Shoots, a "grassroots environmental and humanitarian education program for young people" under the Jane Goodall Institute. Because "hundreds of roots and shoots--young people like you--around the globe can break through and make the world a better place for all living things." (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes
Book Description
As a child, Jane Goodall dreamed of living with the wild animals of Africa. As a young woman, she amazed the world with her groundbreaking discoveries about chimpanzees, which she documented in her acclaimed National Geographic television specials. Ever since, Dr. Goodall has campaigned unceasingly for the protection of the chimpanzee now an endangered species. This moving, personal account will inspire readers of all ages to join in her vital work.
Customer Reviews:
Jane Goodall tells about her chimpanzees to a new generation.......2004-01-01
My father subscribed to both "National Geographic Magazine" and their related series of books, the most memorable of which was about Jane Goodall's study of chimpanzees in Africa. The story of her work and the photographs of Fifi, Flo, Flint, Gremlin, David Greybeard and the rest were so enthralling. Many of those photographs, such as the one of infant Flint watching his mother Flo fish for termites and showing that man is not the only tool-using animal, are collected in "The Chimpanzees I Love: Saving Their World and Ours," which Goodall uses to introduce her exciting work to a new generation of young readers.
When she was a child Jane Goodall decided she wanted to go to the jungles of Africa and study its animals. Today she is one of the most renowned and respected scientists on the planet, having dedicated her life and work to the study of a community of chimpanzees at the Gombe National Park in Tanzania. In this fascinating book Goodall recounts her exciting adventure in making ground-breaking discoveries regarding chimpanzees and their profound similarities to human beings. She also talks about her struggle to protect this endangered species and their vanishing habitats.
Most of "The Chimpanzees I Love" looks at the Goodall's study of the generations of these chimpanzees, where we follow individual chimpanzees from babies to adulthood. Goodall provides simple descriptions of her discoveries, and often points out her own mistakes (naming her subjects was not exactly a scientific practice). Chapters are devoted to how she first made contact with and was accepted by the chimpanzees, how they communicate within their community, the relationship between mothers and babies, what a day in the forest is like, and the mind of the chimpanzees. At that point Goodall gets into the plight of the chimpanzees, including a distressing look at their lives in captivity and how they are being sold in markets in Afrcia. All of the proceeds from the sale of this book are donated to support of Goodall's international grassroots educational program, "Roots & Shoots."
"The Chimpanzees I Love" is both informative and inspirational, which is what you expect from Jane Goodall, who is one of the people who truly defined idealism for a lot of young kids in the Sixties. The idea that Flo's daughter Fifi, who was a little infant when Goodall began her studies, is now around forty years old and has had her eighth infant astounds me. But the one I miss is Flint, the first wild chimpanzee whose development was documented from birth through death, who turned out to be as much a child of the Sixties as the rest of us.

Skurzynski & Fergeson are faves of our grand kids.......2004-11-23
We always know that when we give books by Skurzynski & Ferguson, the young readers will soon be engrossed in the interesting characters and their adventures. Just gave three of OUT OF THE DEEP to 3 different age youngsters. All a hit!
An exciting mystery novel for young adults.......2002-12-15
Collaboratively written by Gloria Skurzynski and Alane Ferguson, Out Of The Deep is an exciting mystery novel for young adults which is set in the beautiful Acadia National Park. A baby whale among other marine mammals has beached upon the park shores, and it's up to the intrepid Landon kids to figure out why. Out Of The Deep is a genuinely captivating story that blends adventure with respect for nature and wildlife. Also very highly recommended is another Gloria Skurzynski and Alane Ferguson title in the eleven volume "Mysteries In Our National Parks" series from National Geographic Society, Running Scared (0792282329).
The best in ther series so far!.......2002-11-05
Jack and Ashley Landon love to travel with their mother, a wildlife veterinarian, who is often called to solve animal mysteries, and their father, who hopes to have a career as a photographer. This time they are on their way to Acadia National Park in Maine to investigate why the marine animals are beaching. But Jack and Ashley have a problem. Bindy Callister, the 14- year-old temporary foster child who has just come to live with the Landon family. Bindy is a liar, or at least Jack thinks so. She claims to know the reason for the animal behavior, and the kids find her near a beached baby whale. Bindy slips away during the rescue operation, determined to prove she know why this is happening, and Jack and Ashley get themselves in deeper than they planned for.The mystery is fascinating reading and an educational experience all rolled into one. I think it's the best one yet in this series for upper elementary or older readers. The mother/daughter author team never fail to teach about science, geography, and human behavior.
Book Description
There are over 4,300 National Forest campgrounds across the United States. While some are popular and well-known, many are obscure gems, seldom visited. This directory will help you find National Forest campgrounds that best fit your needs.
A photo, map and description accompanies campground information from every national forest.
Customer Reviews:
great.......2003-08-29
Be aware -- this does not list every campground in America, or even every one run by the Federal government. Rather it only lists NATIONAL FOREST and Army Corps of Engineer campgrounds. (That's why Yosemite National Park is excluded.)
For what it does cover, this book is the one of a kind. Nothing compares to it. It covers campgrounds that are listed almost no where else, and these are some of the cheapest, most secluded, and natural campgrounds in America. To take advantage of most of them, you'll need to be largely self-contained.
Good but...........2003-05-29
Ordered it for a trip to Yosemite. This National Park not listed..hmmmm.. strange. Looks good for a lot of other parks. Next time I'll stick with Woodall's directories.
Coleman National Forest Campground book.......2003-05-20
I love it. Very informative, beautifully printed, easy to use.
Great Resource.......2003-04-16
Finally, a book that has all the National Grasslands and the Army Corp of Engr. sites in it as well as the Forest areas! Another nice feature of the book was that it listed some regional campgrounds as well if they were in the area of the Nat'l campgrounds.
There were a couple of items that could be corrected: 1.On page 314 #'s 264,265,&270 were written about on page 637 under Tennessee (because they are in Tennessee). 2. On page 623 #36 is on Map page 50 rather than 44 and not near Los Angeles but muchfurther northwest than where it is indicated if it truly is in the Visalia area.
Not to be picky, because I really like the book and find it a valuable resource but the color brown used in the numbering on the maps is a little difficult to read at dusk or later. And it seems like a lot of times we look for campgrounds late in the day.
Intense Amount of Camping Information.......2003-02-23
Some of the reviewers that complain about not having site maps etc. ought to get a grip. With over 4,300 campgrounds in this book, it is simply ridiculous to expect a site map for each campground. The thing that is most helpful about this directory are the descriptions.

Book Description
The Landons are in Virgin Islands National Park to help figure out what is destroying the coral reefs and causing the hawksbill sea turtle to disappear. Jack and Ashley become involved with Forrest Winthrop IV, the adopted son of a U.S. diplomat. Why is he so anxious to save an island woman named Cimmaron, and what secret do they share? The action builds to a dramatic climax at Jumbie Bay, where a full moon finally reveals all.
Customer Reviews:
Escape from Fear (Mysteries in our National Parks).......2007-09-17
My 11 yr old grandson, who is an avid reader, has read all 11 of the current Mysteries in our National Parks series. We purchased the first one while on a trip as a souvenir; subsequently I have purchased the remaining editions available and we are awaiting the 12th book. He is collecting the series, and plans to donate them to his elementary school's library at some point in the future. He has reread many of the issues. These books are excellent for the 10+ year old who is beginning to read "chapter" books.
Virgin Islands setting; Caribbean culture and history.......2005-06-01
This book, ninth in the "Mysteries in Our National Parks" series, is set in the Virgin Islands National Park. The authors deftly weave information about endangered coral reefs and hawksbill turtles into the story, as well as Caribbean culture and history: Jumbies (evil spirits), basket-making, sugar plantations, the 1733 slave revolt, Haitian Macoutes, and the smuggling of illegal aliens from Haiti to the Virgin Islands. A map of the park and an afterword by a marine ecologist are included. The story's politically-correct ending is somewhat unbelievable, but the story will appeal to middle grade students reading at approximately fifth-grade level.
