Book Description
You Are Being Lied To is a massive collection of articles that ruthlessly destroy the distortions, myths, and outright lies that are fed to us by the government, the media, corporations, history books, organized religion, science and medicine, and society in general. No one is spared, and all sacred cows are candidates for the grinder.
Do you believe any of the following?
* Alcoholics Anonymous is effective.
* Hackers pose a grave threat to the nation.
* There's a hidden code in the Bible.
* The Big Bang is an airtight fact.
* Thousands of species have gone extinct because of deforestation.
* Licking certain toads will get you high.
* Most terrorists are Middle Eastern.
Wake up! You're being lied to.
This book acts as a battering ram against the distortions, myths, and outright lies that have been shoved down our throats by the government, the media, corporations, organized religion, the scientific establishment, and others who want to keep the truth from us. An unprecedented group of researchers--investigative reporters, political dissidents, academics, media watchdogs, scientist-philosophers, social critics, and rogue scholars--paints a picture of a world where crucial stories are ignored or actively suppressed and the official version of events has more holes in it than Swiss cheese. A world where real dangers are downplayed and nonexistent dangers are trumpeted. In short, a world where you are being lied to.
Among the revelations inside:
* Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Sydney Schanberg on John McCain's efforts to conceal information on POW/MIAs
* Howard Bloom on liars in the media
* Riane Eisler on the realities of human nature
* James Ridgeway on tainted blood and more
* Jim Marrs on missing evidence in important cases
* Greenpeace cofounder Peter Moore on environmental myths
* Michael Parenti on atrocities in Kosovo
* Douglas Rushkoff on the information arms race
* Gary Webb on the gutless corporate media
* Howard Zinn on Columbus
You'll also discover that a human being has already been cloned, Joseph McCarthy was not paranoid, museums refuse to display artifacts that conflict wi

Oh god!!!.......2007-07-16
Super Anthology! Worth every Federal Reserve note. This book does not lean left or right; instead the reader is given raw uncensored information -long; extensive and, heavily footnoted. Wonderful study companion.
Sensationalist and biased, just like anyone who claims to have the absolute truth.......2007-04-25
Because this book has been written by many authors, it's credibility varies. However I'll put the blame also on whoever picked the content.
Sure there are some very good points about media lies and exagerration, I've heard about them and some are old news to me. Some very reputable authors are there that I have read from before.
However when it comes to the contreversial and iffy topics on religion and science, this book is far to agenda-focused to be taken seriously. For example the article trying to disprove Jesus dosen't makes outright statements with "proof" that can be easily debated and is countered on other books supporting the other side. After that is a chapter glorifing all athiests and humanists, though it's not really a bad thing, it also bashes theists, and lumps "athiests, humanists, and freethinkers" together as if to say that all thiests are idiots, and pretty blaintly says it too. Meanwhile ignoring that there are many thiest intellecuals out there and if religion makes people stupid, then why are church afflitiated universities accredited? Not only that but it is completley ponitless to the topic, it dosen't reveal any disinformation.
To be fair, this book also attacks the scientific community too, but some of it's articles are questionable. For example, one of the articles focuses on a book called "Forbidden Anthropology", which states that human fossils correspond with Vedic records of being more than millions of years old.
Okay, so this book promotes athiesm, bashes Christianity, and is now supporting the New Age\Hindu idea that humans devolved from a higer spirituality and is supporting a book written by agenda-driven Hindu archeologists who at the end of the article start promoting their own spiritual beleifs.
Isn't that called a double standard?
Also some info here and there is pretty irellevant and just speculative. There is also a part disproving the Big Bang theory. I know may other scientists have thier own, non-religious ideas of how the universe began, but it just states "facts" why the Big Bang theory is flawed, but dosen't provide much else, or maybe there was a part but I didn't see it yet.
Okay, not all the aricles here are bad, though this book may blow things out of proportion, but it gives a good start to those seeking to have questions answered regarding the content in this book.
But the title is too absoulute of course, don't take anyone's word that what they are saying is the absoulute truth so fast. If you are indeed a "freethinker" then it would be wise not to consider this book to be absoulutely telling the truth. Who knows, maybe even these exaggerated things are right to some degree?
For Conspiracy Theorists Only!.......2007-01-11
If you're a conspiracy theorist, willing to accept as gospel assertions and allegations that are totally void of any supporting factual data, this book is for you.
However, those able to think for themselves and weigh the supporting data in search of the truth in any given theory will find this collection of supposititious essays quite lacking. I couldn't make it half way through this book before becoming so frustrated with the complete lack of any factual basis for each ineptly presented argument that I gave up and closed the book forever.
Opinions and perceptions are quite plentiful in the pages of this book but cohesive thoughts, supported by facts and credible witnesses are totally absent. An enticing title that just plain doesn't deliver.
Conspiracy Nuts?! NOT...An introduction to alternate views........2006-11-09
If you are already one who questions ALL of what you hear and MOST of what you see then this book is as another commentary stated, "great bathroom reading". Stating that "if" you have read Brave New World then you already know everything in this book is a little misleading. You Are Being Lied To mostly covers issue which are in front of us NOW which you might not have gotten accurate information from the major news outlets or any information at all if you do like most of the American public: Eat, Sleep, & S**T with a lot of work and T.V. taking up the rest of your time.
Powerful interests and "responsible" news outlets in order to better shape your thinking and thus public policy limit facts and/or distort the issues of the day. Definitely worth the purchase but as with all things take a grain of salt and check/research beyond this one source.
Rating: B
Somewhat Entertaining, Mostly Uncourageous, Often Trite.......2006-07-11
I'm normally delighted with any kind of alternative press, and picked this book up mainly because I always wanted to write one like it. Reading, I became ambivalent, for the book tries to do great things but falls short of its goal.
The best articles are "Anatomy of a School Shooting" by David McGowan and "Reassessing OKC" by Cletus Nelson, where the authors deal with eyewitness accounts of Columbine High School and the Oklahoma City bombing, respectively, providing tantalizing details omitted by the mainstream press. These two articles are exemplary of what the book aims to do: provide information mostly hidden by a pandering media.
"Oil Before Ozone" by Russ Kick gave an amusing critique of Al Gore and didn't shy away from dealing with character issues. "The Female Hard-On" by Tristan Taormino is downright pornographic and embarassing to have in my home.
The worst articles are, probably, "AA Lies" by Charles Bufe, who is so critical of anything that smacks of religion he can't even deal with Alcoholics Anonymous honestly (including the organization's own claims about itself - i.e. the news that the founders pulled much of their material from a Christian group is no news to anyone who can read history). The same goes for "The Truth About Jesus" by M.M. Mangasarian, who contradicts himself regularly and imposes a 21st-century, information age mentality upon 1st-century folks.
We all know the book has an agenda, and at the moments when its authors are able to look over their own prejudices, it's a delicious read. Unfortunately, too many of the articles are caught up in a particular political, philosophical, or theological perspectives to accurately correct "disinformation."
Worst of all, I found a lot of the writing trite and unskilled. It's hard to bore me, particularly when the subject of correcting lies and myths arises, but I had a hard time getting through most of the articles.
Read it? Nah. I suggest finding the relevant information elsewhere, and spending your money on a more informative, more interesting, less agenda-ridden claim to rid ourselves of agenda's lies.

A majority of chronic illnesses have no medical cure. The best therapy, asserts the author, is self-care. This comprehensive guide suggests healthy behaviors and holistic approaches while acknowledging the barriers people face in applying them.

Illness as a gift.......2007-05-24
David Spero wrote a helpful and positive book for anyone facing life with illness. It was well written and covered all the key issues for living successfully with chronic illness. He offers a wide range of solutions to help others improve their quality of life as well as shift their attitudes about illness in general. I could see my own journey in the book and thought it captured the essence of illness as a powerful spiritual teacher.
A great book from a knowledgeable, wise, and compassionate author.......2005-10-04
The Art of Getting Well, by David Spero, is a very informative, enjoyable, and inspiring book for those of us with chronic illnesses. David has included many helpful examples, from his own and other's lives, of what works and what doesn't. He describes standard and alternative treatment options for the reader to consider. He also gives many valuable ideas to help the chronically ill have better lives whether or not their condition improves. I highly recommend this book.
The Art of Living Well.......2002-07-12
You don't have to have a chronic illness to get a lot out of Spero's "The Art of Getting Well." Maybe that's because living in our fast paced and relatively crazed culture qualifies all of us as chronically ill. Whatever the case, the accessible style and reassuring tone of this book give you the confidence and motivation to make real changes in your life. I'm especially pleased that Spero does not fall into the "blame the victim" camp. Getting sick is not our fault, although we can have a say in how or whether we get well, up to a point. Sometimes our luck runs out, but our spirit can still remain strong, furthered along by the compassion of bonafide healers and primo storytellers like Spero. Get two: one for yourself and one for a friend.
A Book to Shape Your Life.......2002-05-18
I'm one of the people whose stories appear in The Art of Getting Well. This book has particular power for me, since it captures my story as I have been finding my way after breast cancer surgery, with chemotherapy - that six month bodily assault - followed by radiation. And out of that whole devastating time there erupted the long suppressed and virtually forgotten drive to become an actress. A theater workshop opened me to feelings and experiences, and that led to acting in a community play. With the wealth of material in this book, you can find that life opens up, from what we feel is a disastrous time. We are much more than victims. We are actors.
The Art of Getting Well: Maximizing Health and Well-being.......2002-05-06
This book is both eloquent and down to earth, chock full of interesting anecdotes and inspiration. You can feel the writer's humanity and courage in each page and feel the warmth of his hope. His vitality and tenacity in tackling problems and elucidating others' strengths and vulnerablities is fascinating! He is a gifted writer and has a sensitivity and compassion that come through as he relays his personal experiences and those of people he has helped through his career as a nurse and a personal coach. A must read!

"Elvis & You", Recommended!.......2002-08-05
"Elvis & You", A comprehensive book like this deserves just a short review as it contains within it vast scope it's own recommendation. Elvis fans will be delighted with it's in-depth research, and the less scholastic will enjoy the eccentric humorous nature of the book as a whole. A work to explore at leisure and delve into for those important links to all things Elvis. A bargain for the photos alone!
As a discerning fan of the late Elvis Presley since 1957 yours truly has read a library of Elvis books-this one is amongst the very best.
Don't go to Memphis without this book........2002-04-15
I finally got my hands on a copy of this amazing book. It has lived up to everything I've heard about it from my fellow Elvis fans. First of all it's huge. It's 626 oversized pages of nothing but Elvis. It has over 500 photos ( I stopped counting at 500). Many of the photos were completly new to me. If you were from another planet and didn't know anything about Elvis this book would bring you up to speed. I predict this book will become "the bible" of Elvis fans all over the world.
The book is divided into 33 chapters. Each chapter focuses on one aspect of Elvis and his fans. Some of the chapter titles: Elvis music, Elvis and family, Elvis and the Army, Elvis and romance, Elvis and the martial arts, Elvis and food, Elvis impersonators, Elvis and animals, Elvis in person, Collecting Elvis, Elvis in cyberspace - It's sort of a "how to" book on being an Elvis Fan. It's like a Peter Guralnick book with a sense of humor and a lot more photos.
Not only does it tell you everything you want to know about Elvis himself, it tells you about what has emerged in the 25 years since he's been gone. At the end of every chapter is a section called " The Elvis and You Experience." This is where the author's suggest things to do to enhance your enjoyment of Elvis. The suggestions are a lot of fun. Some are really silly. Just like Elvis!
My favorite chapter is "The Pilgrimage". It lists all the important places to see in Memphis during tribute week. A lot of stuff only Elvis insiders know. I'm studying up to get ready for Tribute week 2002. If you're going to the 25th anniversary Elvis week in Memphis this August. I have one thing to say about this book. Don't leave home without it!
ElvisNews Review.......2000-12-29
Probably because the book is this massive it is printed on very thin paper. Especially because this guide will function as a reference book often, this is a pity. We bet there will be only a few in perfect condition after a couple of weeks. Also a lot of the pictures used in the book deserve more than the exposure they get now, also due to the poor paper-quality. On the other hand: this work on quality paper might hardly be affordable for a lot of people, so the choice is understandable. Let's see if the content is good enough to hope for a "deluxe version" someday. As we always do with new books, we thumbed through it looking for new pictures. On first sight it looked a little complex, with a lot of repeats, we thought. Well, we weren't completely wrong about that, but starting from the beginning we soon found out it has a reason, and a well considered one. All chapters are build in the same way: a more or less short essay about the subject, facts ("Essential Elvisology"), references ("Your Elvis Education") and tips how to enrich your own experiences regarding the subject ("The Elvis And You Experience"). This consistent design makes it pretty easy to find what you want, most of the time. Unfortunately there is no index to this guide, so when you are looking for something really specific... it can be a very hard job.During the acknowledgements it becomes clear that the book has "a heavy Internet base". The reader familiar with the Elvis-scene on the Internet will recognize a lot of the names. Of course this results in a lot of references to the Internet throughout the book. The book is split up in 33 chapters, starting with the man himself: a short biography, mainly a time-line of important dates, his death, his records, his movies, his TV-work, his shows and his personal interests. There are a couple of chapters that are devoted mainly to the fans: Collecting, The Pilgrimage, Your Elvis Shrine, Impersonators and such. As stated before, all chapters start with an essay. Those essays are very well written, and even though nothing new comes up, the point of view from the authors makes them very enjoyable. The guide part of these chapters is very good, directing the reader towards the more important available works. Because the Internet-addresses (the so-called URL's) are often very long and hardly readable, the references to the sites look pretty cluttered. A better solution would have been to list just the site-names, with an alphabetic overview including the URL's in the back of the book. Since this book has its own site (that is: they are constructing the site, so far it looks like they only registered the URL), it might be a nice idea to include all links used in the book on that site, if possible per chapter. Since the Internet is evolving constantly, this might be a good idea anyway. Before such a list returns from the printer it may be outdated already. In general we can say the Elvis part of the guide is reliable, there are some mistakes, but they are in every book it seems, and we didn't find real major misses. The "You"-part is often going towards the ridiculous, especially the chapters we mentioned before. This certainly doesn't mean you can easily skip them. Again, the essays are well written, including a lot of wit and the "tips" are often so ridiculous it gets really funny (e.g. the "Dos and Don'ts of Impersonation" and "How to get started impersonating"). Having met all kinds of people ourselves (especially on the Internet), we know it's not complete nonsense written in those chapters, but sometimes we can't help but think it's too crazy to be true. In opposition to the main media, that love to use those exceptions to stereotype the average Elvis fan, this book shows it in a light-hearted, funny way. Probably the poor souls suffering the "handicaps" in these chapters won't even recognize it and take it seriously, so they'll be happy too. Our conclusion is that this guide is really what it claims to be: "the guide to the pleasure of being an Elvis fan". Interesting, well researched and very enjoyable, thus it gave a lot of pleasure. We can only say that supported by a well maintained website it certainly deserves a "deluxe edition". "So now let's have a tremendous hand for a very nice book"
Excellent!.......2000-10-12
One of the most useful, fun and interesting Elvis books around. A must-have for Elvis fans and scholars because of the breadth and depth of its information. The photos are great as well. This book will be read and used for a long time. I only wish it had been around when I wrote my Elvis book - would have made my work much easier!
REQUIRED READING FOR ALL ELVIS FANS!!!.......2000-08-23
This book is by far the absolute best book that will ever be written about Elvis. The authors are sincere Elvis fans who have done their homework, and it truly shows in this masterpiece. Whether you are a lifelong Elvis fan, or an "outsider looking in", this book is a must read. If you are an Elvis skeptic, read this book and you will be smitten for good. Kudos to the authors!!!
Customer Reviews:
Mr. Humphries, are you free?.......2007-01-21
Great book about a great show. The pictures of the cast both from the show and behind the scenes are worth the price of the book alone.
I'm Free.......2006-08-28
I haven't seen this in over seven years. It doesn't matter. If you U.S. citizens can pick up PBS on your tele, get on over there at about 11PM. Don't watch the news. It'll just repeat what you saw during dinner and read in the newspaper and/or on the Internet, and depress you besides. And, since I mentioned meals, give you indigestion. I lived in the U.S. for 36 years, and the last newsperson I watched was probably Walter Cronkite. So, blow off the news and watch this show instead.
I have no idea why I'm writing this. It's been ages. But, I stand by it. Unless, that is, Dubya lobbed a few smart bombs at PBS under the Patriot Act. One can never be sure.
(Bombs smarter than the president, I might add.)
A Big Serving of Grace Brothers and more!.......2004-04-29
This is a fun book that any fan of the British series, "Are You Being Served?" will enjoy. Full of interesting facts about the actors, producers and directors and bits of trivia, this companion book will be more than enough for any fan of Mr Humphries or the hilarious, cat loving, Mrs. Slocombe. There are summaries of all of the episodes, that also include the second series, "Grace and Favour" and the movie that follows the gang as the go on vacation together. It even includes the episodes of the Australian version, which lasted for two seasons. A well rounded book for a long lasting British sitcom and a must have for any fan of the series!
You Would Be Well Served If You Got This Book!!.......2003-12-22
Are You Being Served was one of the first, and for my money, probably the very best Britcom shown on PBS. Pre-Monty Python, the humor relied on timeless British wit rather than on the physical comedy which has predominated in the 30 years since it's debut. What a joy to see fabulous British actors doing what they do best---speaking the Queen's English with unmatched ability, the better to show that great use of language allied with a wonderful sense of humor makes for unparalleled entertainment. This book traces the history of the show, reviews and rates each episode, profiles the cast and director, and, in the most enjoyable chapter of all, reveal the actual processes by which episodes were made at Sheppard's Bush studios. Since this book seems very much aimed at an American audience, it would be nice if the author spent some time discussing the differences between British and American television: How much are British actors paid, why so few episodes were made per season, etc. Still, it is wonderful to see actors who care more about "mucking in" and helping each other out rather than screaming about lack of pay, etc. In the British system, the play (or sitcom) is the thing, and I, for one, appreciate the difference (not to mention a much higher level of talent overall!). In sum, an excellent book and a great companion for your next Are You Being Served watching party, where hopefully, the partygoers get to dress as their favorite characters! Just be sure to plan carefully; we wouldn't want a party where everyone would come dressed as Mrs. Slocombe and Mr. Humphries, now would we?? On second thought, it might be more fun that way!!!
Great campanion guide to the show.......2003-06-25
I purchased this book YEARS ago in the 90's! I still find myself enjoying the book today (2003)! It goes over the history of the show and even has a synopsis of every episode. It even gives a rating of each episode showing how funny each episode it.
This truly is a treasure that you'll want on your coffee table. This is one of the funniest shows ever produced. The book even includes some juicy extras that we in the U.S. have been deprived of. The movie that was inspired by the show and the revival series that popped up many years later.

Different, but a must have!.......2000-01-23
The Art of being you came out just after the death of the talented Gianni Versace. I own all of his books which I highly recommend. Different in this installment are the images of modern art which Versace so incorporated into his work. Evident is the work of Julien Schnabel (broken plate painter) and Andy Warhol. The presence of photographer Richard Avedon's work makes the 100$Canadian worth it. If your into fashion especially Versace, check out Vanitas for Gianni's renderings. Nobody does it like Versace. Lets hope his sister continues the same tradition.
The best.......1999-10-24
This book shows the private art collection that the versace family have collected. Great book with great pictures.
Any coffee table w/o this should be green with envy!.......1999-10-24
In the world of Art books, This has got to be the best posthumous release ever. Abbeville Press has outdone themselves with this masterpiece. I own Mr. Versace's previous 5 books, Signatures, Vanitas, Do not disturb, Rock and Royalty and Men w/o ties which I highly recommend. In this edition, Versace shows us that until his untimely death, the wheels never stopped turning. With the help of Thierry Perez, Steven Meisel, Julian Schnabel and other fabulous artists, This book truly defines the artifice and uncompromising couturier called Gianni Versace.

Book Description
We all want a life filled with prosperity, good health, and happiness. A Beginner's Guide to the Art of Manifesting presents explanations as to why we are closed off from what we want in this life. It offers an opportunity to clear away the negative influences from our pasts and those in our present. It opens the door for a future impregnated with the seeds of hope and limitless possibilities for peace of mind and success. The techniques outlined in this book are clear, concise and offer a wealth of information passed down from the great spiritual teachers throughout time. The affirmations and meditations are uplifting yet peaceful, thorough yet easy to follow.
Most self-help books of this nature describe how to attract that with which you want but, rarely if ever explain why you think, feel and believe negatively in the first place.
One must clear away the excess of the past to make room for a future filled with promise and contentment.
A Beginner's Guide to the Art of Manifesting is a tool to help direct you to the path that leads to the universal laws of attraction and ultimately the life you were meant to live.
