1 out of 5 stars You're kidding... right?.......2007-03-14

This book (okay, it's not actually a book but we'll get to that shortly), arrives in a hugely impressive foil box, both figuratively and literally. It is only when you open this impressive box that you find you have paid $175.00 for a small number of pamphlets. Quite large pamphlets, but pamphlets nonetheless.

To compound their ignominy, the work isn't even that great (though that is obviously a personal opinion). The majority of the work suffers from being enlarged to fit the oversized pamphlet specs but a lot of the work, regardless of the size, is just mediocre, plain and simple. The work that stands out the most is by Karl Lagerfeld which certainly surprised me considering the distinguished list of photographers involved.

All in all, I would have liked to keep the box. Since that option was unavailable, I returned the item, beautiful box, pamphlets and all.

Book Description

One hundred years of style by decade and designer.

The twentieth century experienced the most fashion changes in history: from hoop skirts to mini skirts, from wearing cotton to plastic. Fashion was as turbulent as the times. Throughout it all, Vogue magazine was there, as the leading visual filter.

20th Century Fashion, published in association with Vogue magazine, is the definitive style bible for anyone interested in the past, present and future of fashion. It takes a fresh look at fashion history over the twentieth century and charts the evolution from corsets to Coco Chanel to punk.

The book chronicles and explores one hundred years of developments and movements, including:

Illustrated with eye-catching archive images, 20th Century Fashion also features the work of the photographers who helped immortalize seminal fashion images. An A-Z section profiles two hundred and fifty of the greatest fashion designers who inspired, created and altered the course of fashion -- from Azzedine Alaïa to Zoran by way of Balenciaga and Yohji Yamamoto.

20th Century Fashion is an informative and inspirational look at how fashion reflects and projects social mores and individual values.

4 out of 5 stars Just OK........2007-06-28

This is a very small book. It's about the size of a paperback novel. The first half is a very brief history of western fashion, focusing on each decade of the 20th century. The second half contains very brief biographies of many fashion designers. How brief? Sometimes there are 5 on a single small page. There are very few photos. I would have liked to have seen one or two photos of every designer's work. Instead there's maybe one photo for every fifth designer. The book is good for a quick lookup of "Who? Never heard of them before." It's not great if you really want to know about someone's work.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT FASHION BOOK!.......2007-05-24

This is the book you need if you are looking for a complete -and at the same time- condensed history of 20th century fashion and its most important designers.
It is very interesting and well written, besides... it has amazing pictures! Great value for your money ;)

5 out of 5 stars Great research.......2005-03-04

i used this book to help me with a research paper on fashions reflections of society's morals. i loved the format and it was so useful. i learned so much and appreciated the truthfulness.

5 out of 5 stars Elegance, Imagination, Attitude - We've Come So Far!.......2004-09-28

VOGUE was launched in New York on December 17, 1892. This outstanding book chronicles more than just a century of fashion. Written with in-depth focus, this gorgeous book hits on the pulse of the attitudes, societal values, and social elegance that the designer's portrayed, as well as how American culture was reinvented decade after decade. This is one outstanding book, and shows just how far we've come. Special thanks to Linda Watson for an outstanding job in bringing the 20th century to life. Simply FANTASTIC!

5 out of 5 stars biographies of 245 international fashion designers.......2002-06-19

Vogue Twentieth Century Fashion - 100 Years of Style by Decade and Designer is another superb book, which we recommend. Written by Linda Watson it is very informative and also has the status of a coffee table book. The book contains the biographies of 245 international fashion designers and couturiers. It starts off with a description about the various fashion decades of the 20th Century. Entertaining are the quotes from old Vogue magazines about the latest fashion trends. The oldest Vogue, which is quoted is from 19 August 1909. Needless to say that there are many pictures and photos on each page.

    Book Description

Sports Illustrated Knockouts: Five Decades of Swimsuit Photography celebrates the art of that uniquely American institution, the Sports Illustrated annual swimsuit issue.Beginning with the inaugural issue on January 24, 1964, which featured model Babette March in a modest four-page spread, Knockouts goes on to document the evolution of the swimsuit issue through five decades of models who, largely by virtue of their appearances here, became celebrities, including Elle Macpherson, Cheryl Tiegs, Tyra Banks, and Kathy Ireland.Besides assembling a selection of the best photographs in book form for the first time, Knockouts offers an ample selection of outtakes and other previously unpublished photos, various quotes from models, photographers, art directors, and commentaries on the logistics and technical aspects of the shoots and the exotic ports of call in which they were staged.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Magnificant girls, lousy binding.......2004-08-18

The women in this book are sexy and classy. It can't be easy to combine dignity and a bikini but they manage. The binding seems kind of weak.

    5 out of 5 stars Old School.......2002-12-09

There is a wonderful quote in this book from a journalist (and a female one at that) which says:

"All the SI bathing suit models are muscular and lean and authentic. They don't mind working up a good sweat. They're proud of the bodies they've worked into shape. There is nothing powdery or gushy about them. In other words the women in the swimsuit issue are not the worse role models a young girl could have."

And she's absolutely right. If I had abs like that I would show them off proudly too!!! Knowing a little bit about physical fitness...I know that it takes a lot of discipline and hard work to get your body to look that toned. The last thing in the world I would do is criticize them for this. I came to SI just by chance I saw the 1995 special on TV and was left majorly impressed at how the young women conducted themselves. They were definitely no ones "hoochies". Actually I was so impressed that when I saw several of them on the covers of various magazines etc.. I immediately remembered their names. And that is not something that happens with everyone.

I never understood the hullabaloo people make about the SI swimsuit issues. I think that it is absolutely wonderful. My favorite period was when Jules Campbell was the editor. The woman definitely had an eye for (tasteful) beauty. It was pure old school: In that while the models were certainly appealing-it was always in a DIGNIFIED WAY-everything about these ladies said "respect me". These women carried themselves with the confidence of Queens. They exuded assurance and implied that they had the world on a string.

The pictures in the book are absolutely exquisite and are worth every penny.

Believe it or not in a world where actresses and film stars often look as if they work in the adult entertainment business. The SI swimsuit models are not the worst role models young girls can have. Thanks ladies for providing such an inspiration to me!

5 out of 5 stars Great Collector's Item, a must have for the bookshelf.......2002-09-27

I've been subscribing to Sports Illustrated for over 6 years, and it's been amazing to see how the "evolution" of the Swimsuit issue has gone through the years.

It was a treat to see the some old favorites, going from Christie Brinkley and Elle McPherson to current cover girls Heidi Klum and Daniela Pestova. Great addition to the library!

4 out of 5 stars Not quite perfect.......2002-07-18

Some great photography of some beautiful subjects. If you've seen the swimsuit issues you know the style. The photos range from around the days of Brinkley to Casta.

The only reason I say it's not quite perfect is that they seem to have been a little too ambitious on the size of the book. Almost every photo is stretched to the limits of the pages, which can make for great impact, but some of the photos have lost a little quality being blown up that much. You can see some graininess in several of the shots; I think most of them are the older ones. Most of the pages are fine however.

It would also have been nice to see some of the body paint pics in here but they are absent.

    Overall a nice book.

    4 out of 5 stars Very nice!.......2002-04-18

A few of the pictures are grainy, and some of the shots are unappealing. But of the good ones, they are truly unique gems of glamour photos. The models in this book are all beautiful, healthy, sexy; and they all have a very positive outlook in their eyes. A very pleasing book to thumb thru on a cold or cast down day.

    Book Description

For anyone who loves Barbie and wants to know more, this illustrated biography tells the story of the doll's evolution into an icon of popular culture, beloved and avidly collected by children and adults alike.

Conceived in 1959 as an "adult" doll to dress for every occasion, Barbie has since become a worldwide cultural and commercial phenomenon. Illustrations reveal her many faces, styles, and incarnations, from the blonde, blue-eyed mainstay to the exotic dolls available around the world. Here too are her most glamorous costumes, and the real-life Hollywood stars-Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, and Vivien Leigh-and fashion designers-Christian Dior, Calvin Klein, and Bob Mackie-who inspired them.

Doll expert Marco Tosa presents a wealth of documentation, including a description of how the dolls are made, a family tree, a chart of the dolls' occupations, the dates of issue of each Barbie doll discussed, and photographs of original packaging. There is also a section on the forthcoming, more anatomically correct Barbie doll.

Marco Tosa, a native of Genoa, Italy, teaches at the Venice Academy of Fine Arts. He is the author of several books on fashion and on the history and culture of dolls.

Since an Italian writer, he revolves a little more around the Italian part of Barbie (i.e., the fasions, models from Italy, excerts from Italian magazines, etc.) but he does go through a lot of the very famous styles that made Barbie "Barbie" like Enchanted evening, Solo in the Spotlight, Busygal, etc. There is also a 4 page visual on the steps in making a Barbie which I thought was pretty neat. He also shows about 16 of the around the world barbies. And lots of special edition ones too. A very good book; anyone who wants to know about the "special" barbies should get this book

I have been waiting anxiously for this book to come out since I got my copy of A Decade of Guess? Images 1981-1991 years ago, and as soon as I saw the second decade book was out I bought it.... not only are these books truly gorgeous, but they actually appreciate in value ...

Anyway, as always you are left wanting more, which is a faint downer, but it also makes you want to get hold of the catalogues Guess? put out during the year of each season's clothes - I've started looking around for them on sale 2nd hand because I want to see the photos that have been left out! Looking at the changes in style through the decade is of course fascinating, the different styles of each photographer and how everything ties in with the style of Guess? itself. There is very little writing in the book which leaves you open to fully concentrate and absorb each photograph, although I personally would have liked a little more detail on each of the shoots such as the names of all they people involved and the role they filled, maybe a few anecdotes, etc.

I don't have a favourite photo or a favourite shoot. I think this book may actually be better in regards to that than the first book. In this book while there is a lot of variety, there is more of a 'feel' for what is wanted from each shoot.

Buy it. You absolutely cannot regret it.

    Book Description

As the times change, so do the fashions. Decades of Beauty takes a unique look at the history of female beauty and how it has evolved since the end of the Victorian era. This lavishly illustrated book traces the major changes in the female image over the past one hundred years, one decade at a time. Focusing on the look that was "in" during each time period, each chapter explores particular reasons for a style, including developments in make-up, hair-styling, fabrics, accessories, and the shape of female underwear and garments.

Beautiful and informative, Decades of Beauty also examines the major social and political events that affected the way women were perceived throughout history, and profiles the key personalities and innovators of feminine style who personified the decade.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Stunningly beautiful........2005-02-12

Don't be to eager to dismiss this book as superficial, for females only or aimed at the fashion/ art set. It is a well researched and knowledge packed directory into the ploitics and social history of fashion and beauty, throughout the entire 20th century.
It would be of immense value to students of 20th century history, women's studies as well as an invaluable and pictorial journey for children exploring the recent past.
The layout is well structured and the photography, art and fashion plates are breath taking.
Even if just a coffee table book, it's far more engaging than the average trendy photo album.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Pictoral History.......2003-11-27

Decades of Beauty is both an excellent pictoral as well as literary history of beauty through the decades. Great pictures that have not been often seen showcase the fashion fads of each era along with the fashion icons who are responsible for that decade's fashion hype. I loved that this book also gave equal space to the history of cosmetic beauty through the years. Its fascinating to see what type of makeup each generation "had to have" along with the "hippest" hairstyles of the day. The contents are easy to read and allows one to pick and choose a decade of interest without having to read the book start to finish. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is a cosmetic junkie, fashion obsessed, or just a history buff. This would also make an excellent gift for those in the beauty industry. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A book you will enjoy reading time and time again.......2002-07-20

I purchased this book a year ago and read it from cover to cover the day it arrived. But I find myself picking it up and flipping through it every now and again. I love the fact that the authors wound in all kinds of fascinating pop culture trivia along with fashion history. I learned all kinds of amazing things -- like the fact that Elizabeth Arden brought out a velvet gas mask during World War II and that someone actually saw fit to bring a bra to market that could be inflated by blowing into a straw. This book is very fun reading indeed. It's also a gorgeous coffee table book. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting Look at Styles Through the Years.......2002-01-04

This book covers the changing styles and images from the 1890s thru the 1990s. Each section covers the life & times, faces in vogue, film and media, fashion, hair and hats, cosmetics, body shape and underwear, and work and play for a particular decade. Filled with interesting facts and tons of photographs, this makes the perfect addition to the library of anyone interested in fashion, cosmetics, or history! Fun and unique!

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Read--Great Coffe Table or Bubble Bath Read!.......2001-09-22

A nice collection of fact & photos on the beauty industry. Contains information on styles of each period--including the impact of film! I thought the 1920's invention of "twist-up" lipstick & the use by flappers was a hoot! Pick this book up & grab another as a gift!

4 out of 5 stars Lots of wonderful Discriptions and Pics, but no Names.......1999-04-10

This is a great book...it shows lots of great pictures of the fashions of Barbie from 1959 to 1998, however the name of the dolls were not included, just a short discription of the fashion. This was kind of disappointing, but if you are not interested in the identity of the dolls, then this book is a perfect pictorial of Barbie's world of fashion.
