5 out of 5 stars The new referrence guide to the works of The Tiffany Studios.......2007-05-07

With the advent of Duncan's new book 'Tiffany Lamps and Metalware' we have a NEW referrence guide that will surely replace 'Tiffany At Auction', also by Duncan. This will take place for two reasons - first - the cost of 'Tiffany At Auction' has become, like the lamps themselves, out of the reach of many prospective buyers and students of the Art Nouveau movement in America. Second - the new volume offers far more pieces to see so that those just getting into the collecting or the study of 'Tiffany' will be able to have a greater number of examples - both common and rare - that the individual may not have seen prior to this publication. A wonderful effort on the part of Mr. Duncan. And, at an affordable price!

5 out of 5 stars The Most Complete Reference on Tiffany Lamps.......2007-04-06

This book is a stunning follow-up to Mr. Duncan's incredible "Louis C. Tiffany, The Garden Museum Collection". As a 30 year collector and enthusiast of the works of Tiffany I can confidently state that this volume will become an essential reference guide to any collector in this field and dramatically expands upon his "Tiffany at Auction" which was published over 25 years ago and is a highly sought after collector's item. The world of Tiffany collectors owes Mr. Duncan a huge debt for bringing us a seemingly endless series of spectacular books on this subject.

    Book Description

This beautiful book focuses on Laurelton Hall, Louis Comfort Tiffany’s extraordinary country estate in Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York. Beginning in 1902, Tiffany (1848–1933) designed every aspect of the immense home, which had eighty-four rooms and eight levels, and extensive grounds into which the house was carefully integrated. Tiffany’s residential masterpiece was also a quasi-museum, for he filled it with his own works—windows, glassware, pottery, enamels, lamps, oil paintings, and watercolors—as well as with objects from his collections of Islamic, Asian, and Native American art.
Laurelton Hall burned down in 1957, but about ten years earlier most of its contents had been removed and sold. Every aspect of the estate is examined and re-created in this volume: its terraced gardens with fountains and pools; the many outbuildings; and Tiffany’s life there. The interior decoration of Laurelton Hall, a particular focus of the book, is represented by both numerous period photographs and newly commissioned color photography of surviving artworks and salvaged architectural components from the estate. For all who admire Tiffany and his work, this book presents a unique portrait of his remarkable home.

5 out of 5 stars Louis Comfort Tiffany's Laurelton Hall.......2007-01-19

This is an excellent and scholarly book filled with incredible photos and descriptions of LCT's home, Laurelton Hall. The author has written a series of fine chapters that look at all aspects of this magnificent residence. What the fire at Laurelton destroyed, this book restores with words and photos. For all of you who love Tiffany's artistry, this book is not to be missed!

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars A classic.......2007-07-08

I got this book because I love the movie, and now I can say I greatly appreciate the book also. It is always nice when a movie follows a book well and not make their own story and just use the title. But this is definitely a book i read again and again. The other stories in the collection were good also.

4 out of 5 stars Nice introduction to Truman Capote's work.......2007-06-01

Like many others here, I was inspired to read Truman Capote's work for the first time after seeing the movie Capote. I thought that starting with In Cold Blood would be too dark, so I chose Breakfast at Tiffany's instead. Surprisingly, this orginal work is not nearly as light and cavalier as the famed film version. Although the movie stuck fairly closely to the actual plot, Holly is a much deeper character than her excellent portrayal by Aubrey Hepburn would suggest. There are nuances to her story that are completely left out of the on-screen version, including a poignant conclusion that is nowhere near a Hollywood ending. Overall, however, Breakfast at Tiffany's is an excellent read, at it alone is deserving of a 5-star rating.

While Breakfast at Tiffany's is more of a novella, the other tales in this book are simply short stories, and I found them to be much less compelling. House of Flowers is a sort of off-beat romance, some of which I found to be disturbing and with an ending that I found to be unsatisfying. A Diamond Guitar was more moving yet quite depressing. Finally, A Christmas Memory, the best of the three, was a sweet tale of a young boy's special bond with a much older relative.

If you are looking for an entry point to Truman Capote's work, this book would be a good place to start familiarizing yourself with this talented, important writer.

5 out of 5 stars Have a wonderful fictional dream..........2007-06-01

The late novelist John Gardner said that an ideal fictional story invokes in the reader an unbroken, fictional dream. I like this way of thinking about reading a novel or short story. If you keep "waking up" during the reading, then the author isn't doing his job very well.

I just read Breakfast at Tiffany's--not 30 minutes ago--and I'm still not sure I'm fully "awake." Holly Golightly, the focal character here, seems so real to me, I can hardly believe she isn't in New York, this moment, missing her door key. Very few novels have affected me this way, this strongly. A Catcher in the Rye--that one did it. Jane Eyre, a few others. If you read, as I do, primarily for company, to share the company of fascinating "people," I think you'll love this little book.

Truman Capote was one of America's most gifted writers, and in this story, he not only brings his characters to life, he brings this New York City neighborhood, in the 1950s, to life as well.

      A magical, unforgettable read.

      5 out of 5 stars a definite classic.......2007-06-01

Holiday Golightly. She's quirky, comical, and glamorous. She's fashionable, in-the-know, and in-the-now. She's lonely, lost, and waiting to be rescued. You couldn't resist her charm if you tried, and you can't help but fall in love with her.

Well, at least in the Hollywood film version. Capote's original novella paints a darker portrait of Miss Golightly. Unlike Audrey Hepburn's adorable Holly, who needs a knight in slightly-rusted armor to save her, Capote's girl is a "wild thing" who cannot be caged, trained, or rescued.

I can't deny that the film is a classic and is one of my favorites. Audrey Hepburn may be the epitome of glamour and beauty, and Hollywood's Holly can't help but absorb Audrey's charm. By the end of the film you find yourself rooting for "Fred" to save her from the nonsense of high society, reunite her with the cat, and wipe away her case of "the mean reds" forever. That is Hollywood, after all, and we would expect nothing less.

But the real Holly, Capote's Holly, can never be caged by convention. It would be hard to imagine her ever settling down and being content with Fred (regardless of the fact that he is an implied homosexual in the book. Hollywood seemed to have "overlooked" that).

Don't get me wrong, it's not that the book's Holly is a Bad Person; she's just more layered and real. Think about it - how many people have you come across who create a new persona for themselves, based on what they perceive others to desire? People who feign interest in the popular styles/entertainment/notable people of the day, just to seem like a Very Important Person and garner adoration, fame, and possibly fortune. I could name a few.

But we get to go deeper than Holly's exterior and see the scared and lonely girl at the core. She is terrified of being a caged animal, but also tired of being alone. She wants to seem as though she's making a holiday out of life, but struggles with the need for stability and the desire for freedom.

The book I read also included three of Capote's most famous stories, and I'd be remiss not to mention them as well: House of Flowers, A Diamond Guitar, and A Christmas Memory. The three short stories are amazingly intimate and touching, illuminating different sides of human emotion. I have not read Capote's magnum opus, In Cold Blood, but after witnessing his detailed descriptions and haunting perceptions of human nature in these shorter forms, I have added his novel to my "to-read" list.

      5 out of 5 stars There's a reason it's endured.......2007-05-29

The best introduction to Capote's work, in my opinion. Holly Golightly is a dream of New York City, a figure that so many millions of people, male and female, have come to Manhattan to try to be. Those amoral jerks! (ha ha) Capote's ability to sustain this dream in prose, even though Holly is not much more than a stylish wh*re, is what has kept this short, breezy-yet-tragic postwar novel in print for almost 50 years. A classic.

I'll always love Audrey Hepburn in the movie (though let's admit it, she's too old for the part), and Moon River is a great song, but I'm sorry that Fassbinder couldn't have done his own movie adaptation. THAT would have been something!

      5 out of 5 stars Great Information!.......2007-09-23

Business Plans for Dummies has great information in it and is a wonderful resource for those starting or contemplating starting a business. Well worth the cost!

4 out of 5 stars Good Reference for Beginners and Intermediates Alike.......2004-03-22

I've done a number of business plans in my time and bought this book as a gift for a friend who wants to start her own business. I purchased it because it includes all of the basics needed to develop a business plan that will guide you as you start and build your business and will also give you the credibility you need to secure outside financing. This is a very good step-by-step guide for those completely new to business and an excellent refresher guide for those who already know the basics.

And, by the way, you can skip the companion Dummies book called Business Plans Kit, which covers the same ground as this book but includes a CD-ROM that doesn't add much value. The truth is, this book is cheaper and offers just as much help as the larger and more expensive kit version.

I'm a business planning consultant and a client just gave me a copy of this book. Way too basic, not enough help on the most important part of any business plan: the financials. If you want to get funded, look for a better book.

      3 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2002-10-29

This book was not bad, but it needs more sample plans. If you are writing a Business Plan, this book will get you started, but it will not get you finished.

5 out of 5 stars For the non-MBA entrepreneurial wannabes!.......2001-06-04

As someone who fits the above category, this book seems to have all, and more, that I need to constructively think about what it takes to build a business from scratch, and have a document that will help induce others to invest in it! 5 out of 5 stars I Love A Good Book.......2007-09-25

First of All, I picked this book up at the library and was attracted by the cover. It kept me enthralled and I found myself unable to put it down. I saw myself in a few of the characters in this book and I never knew Christian Fiction could be so good. This book really spoke to me and the scriptures explained and put in here were appreciated. I related so much that some things I would apply to my life. I have been sharing this poor little book. I believe I will buy it to give to my sistahs that can also get alot out of reading this.

5 out of 5 stars Real Life Here.......2007-08-23

I found this book to be similar to my life. It may be considered fiction, but it sure did seem like things that happen in real life. I believe persons who purchase this book will truly enjoy it.

4 out of 5 stars Great Ministry Tool.......2007-08-20

I picked up this novel by accident while searching for something else. I believe it was divine intervention because elements of the story hit close to home and what was therapy for the main character became my therapy as well.
I found Farther Than I Meant To Go, Longer Than I Meant To Stay to be a good solid story that I could truly label as Urban Christian Fiction.
My only critisms would be that I felt the novel was very "safe". I wished the author would have dealt with a few more natural issues a little more realistically just as she dealt heavily with spiritual issues. For example, after being intimate with someone who is cheating, I felt the character should have gotten tested for STD's, etc. That was never explored.
I also felt at times that the characters were one-dimentional and lacked "flavor".
Over all, I do think that the story was good and the ministry was undeniable. I only wished the author would have given it more of a "punch".
I would highly recommend this novel for women in their late thirties and over who are single - particularly those who are full figured.

Okay the main character is definitely a mirror image of some of today's women. But no matter your situation you will find that you can relate.

I had the wonderful good fortune to find the LAMPS OF TIFFANY at a flea market and I'm delighted to say that I now own a copy of this beautiful book.

There are almost 300 delightful photographs of the lamps made by Louis Comfort Tiffany in this book and 238 of them are in color. Each picture is accompanied by a detailed description of the lamp. There are also chapters devoted to Glass, Lamp Bases, Fixtures, Shades and information about the many other details in these lamps. LAMPS OF TIFFANY allows us to enjoy the beauty of these fantastic works of art while learning something about the components of which they were made.

Since most of us can't afford a true Tiffany lamp, I have to say that many of the gorgeous reproductions that are made today are a tribute to the artistry of Mr. Tiffany.

Artistry Stained Glass in Tempe, Arizona teaches extensive classes in Tiffany lamp building. With over 40 years combined lamp building experience, we find Egon Neustadt's book to be the most sought after reference for color, layout and even lamp base matching. We have other reference books, but this one is passed around from student to student, without fail.

It took me six months just to locate this book! It's good to see it's at least available now to others. Our customers use it for a reference as well, when we are commissioned to build a Tiffany reproduction lamp.

      Thanks Amazon!

5 out of 5 stars This is the "The Tiffany Lamp Bible", Mr. Neustadt is Moses!.......1997-12-09

I personally used this book as a true reference while recreating Tiffany shades and bases with a well-known Tiffany Repro company in California from 1983 to 1989. I never lost my fascination for the detail and beauty of each piece catalogued in this wonderful book, as well as the invaluable references to glass, bronze and "tag" authenticity. Mr. Neustadt truly loved L.C. Tiffany's work, and the photo overlay process used in the original book gave each shade it's true color and a rich depth. My book was well-loved, and so valuable as a reference at the time that it was unfortunately stolen from me before I had to give my work up to a carpal tunnel injury. I have since wished it would reappear at a lesser price, but the book is truly worth twice it's weight in gold to any Tiffany colorist or devotee. I now satisfy myself with an occaisional "fix" at the churches of Boston and Maine which are graced with the windows I love almost as much. I am glad to know where I might indulge myself in the purchase of this book, as I had thought at one time it was quite hard to find. A truly fantastic guide to the great variety of Tiffany Stvdios shades and bases.

I have had this book for about a year. As a stained glass lamp hobbyist I find it an invaluable reference and read it often to check on detail (and to find how far I have yet to go with this hobby!). Mr Neustadt points out many of the subtleties in these lamps that are sometimes overlooked. On a related topic, many of the lamps in his possesion can be seen at the NY Historical Society, Central Park, NYC. If you like Tiffany, this book is a must

      5 out of 5 stars A Complete Resource.......1997-09-14

Possibly the most complete and authoritative collection of information on Tiffany's lamps, life, and studios in existence. Accurate photographs of nearly every shade in existence as well as the varieties within each design. Thorough discussion of the glass used and its properties, as well as the lampbases that support the works. I know of no other reference for the artist, collector, or lamp fanatic that is as complete.
