interesting, informative read.......2007-05-19
I couldn't put this book down. A friend lent me her copy, and I loved it so much I ordered my own before I was even finished reading it. I learned so much about health and beauty and the things around us that drag them down. I have gone on to some of the other books and topics mentioned in this one, and have significantly changed my lifestyle, due largely to the information from Kat's book. I recommend it to any woman who wants to take better care of herself, feel better, and look better. It won't just benefit you; it will benefit all those around you. A fun and easy read--it is definitely worth the money.
Good reference.......2007-05-16
Great book loaded with information on ways to get healthier and think healthier about the way we women look.Fabulous product suggestions. She never leaves you wondering how do i do that or where do i get this?
Excellent Resource.......2007-05-14
Though the first part of the book is somewhat mundane it more than compensates for it in the resouces section. James not only lists the best products for one's diet, skin care, healing specific problems, and anything having to do with good health, but she also lists stores where they may be found complete with addresses. Her listings are impressive and invaluable. The resouces section alone is well worth the price of the book. For anyone who neither reads nor understands labels, this book is a "must have."
A great book that shows health and beauty go hand in hand.......2007-02-02
Even before I read The Truth about Beauty, I already bought a lot of natural and organic products, shopped at health food stores, and used traditional Chinese medicine. But despite being generally attuned to the problems with chemicals, overly processed foods, pharmaceuticals, etc., I still had some blind spots, especially when it came to issues of "beauty." For example, with my skin I was still using the old "search and destroy" method. But this book opened my eyes, and I have had much more success since I gave that up and started following James' advice about fixing the skin from the inside out.
The book does a great job of connecting health with beauty and explains a lot of concepts that even a natural food consumer might not know a lot about. For example, I had always thought of low-carb diets as being a lot of baloney (so to speak), but the way James explains the glycemic index makes total sense. I especially like her idea of "upgrading" and the specific examples she offers, like drinking spritzers instead of soda.
The resource index is also really useful, although some of the products may seem expensive. If you shop at Wal-mart for all your food and toiletries, yes, you will pay more for natural products. But if you buy department store brands like Clinique, you will be able to find plenty within your budget. Also, I find that I use a lot fewer products in general now that I've started following the kind of simple regiment James prescribes.
All in all, I would recommend this excellent book to anyone who has beauty issues.
A life-changing book!.......2007-01-11
I had the great fortune to meet Kat James and hear her speak at the Alive! Expo in Seattle in 11/06. She is as compelling a public speaker as she is an author. She tells her own story in the book, which makes it resonate just that much more strongly. This book, simply put, has changed my life. I followed almost all of Kat's recommendations, and have used the buying guide at the back to replace many of the personal care products I used for years without thinking of the chemicals contained in them. I'm eating organic foods and have lost 25 lbs. since I read this book three months ago. I bought it for several women friends for Christmas, and they're loving it, too. I cannot recommed the book highly enough. Read more at www.informedbeauty.com
Book Description
Authentic personal style comes from understanding our bodies, recognizing the demands of our particular lifestyle, mining our experiences, and finding what we really like. —Randolph Duke
Randolph Duke’s The Look is a guide to personal style unlike any other. Duke knows high fashion—he has dressed Hollywood A-listers for the red carpet for years—but more important, he understands that putting together a truly fabulous look has everything to do with the woman who’s wearing it. Every woman already knows what she does and doesn’t like, so The Look wastes no time prescribing one-size-fits-all fashion solutions. Instead, it helps women make today’s sometimes-intimidating array of options work cleverly and beautifully for them.
It all starts with body type. Once you’ve identified your shape from five broad categories, you’ll learn to choose clothing that maximizes your positive features and downplays less desirable ones. Then, you can shop for flattering outfits that fit your lifestyle, whether you’re a fan of bohemian or preppy, urban chic or country living. The Look also teaches you to mine your own closet (and your friends’, too!) for pieces that can be refreshed or repurposed for a whole new look.
Great style is more about a state of mind than it is about a designer wardrobe or a fat bank account. Learning to respect your body and your own taste is a critical part of Duke’s philosophy. Exercises throughout the book help you identify what inspires you as you update your look and feel ever more gorgeous in your own skin. Stunning photographs of real, stylish women, from linear-figured supermodel Cheryl Tiegs to hourglassy fashion writer Merle Ginsberg, will encourage you to mix up and play with fashion to send your own message.
With expert tips on everything from making occasion-appropriate accessories choices and matching makeup to your ensemble to spicing up your outfit with personality pieces and stocking up on essentials for work, play, and evenings out, The Look gives you all the tools you need to let your personal style shine through.

Very helpful book.......2007-10-03
This book was very helpful. I now understand why certain apparel looks good on my body type and others don't. I cleaned out my closet and then went shopping armed with this information and feel, for the first time, that all my purchases were a good investment for me.
very poor layout, too much text .......2007-03-09
For a book about fashion and dressing, this book was laid out poorly. Because there is an overload of text, it really needed to be better organized visually so that the user could quickly find sections of interest and grasp the main points. I feel like I'm being forced to read a text book. The editors should have looked at the InStyle 'how to dress' books and compare the difference.
I'm sure Duke knows a ton about fashion and have great information to share. It's too bad the communication of it is blocked.
Need more photos.
unbelievable.......2007-02-23
This book answers so many questions...it is as if Randolph is alongside, advising you what to STOP wearing! the price of this book is nothing compared to the knowledge gained with Mr. Duke...Randolph, PLEASE do volumes 2, 3, 4....as we can never get enough insight into WHY certain things don''t mix well together. I'm amazed at what to stop buying that wasn't working and what to add to my wardrobe that will enhance it over the top.
This book is a must have!.......2007-02-23
You can tell Randolph wrote this book himself ... it sounds just like him! It is a great little yet comprehensive guide to everything about personalized style. And what fun to read and go through the exercises ... I have only read the first 1/3 of the book and have a much better grasp on the whole concept of dressing my body. Plus, it''s hard to put down -- full of his humor and obvious desire to give women back to themselves. Great job, RD! Thanks.
Wonderful.......2007-02-23
I've just finished reading this amazing book that i recieved only a week ago... It's so great to have all these concepts clarified...the basic principals are suggestions not commands... Each person can develop then her own authentic style and become the woman she always wanted to be. This book is down to earth and totally useful. THANKS! It was worth waiting for.

Love it!.......2007-09-21
These books are awesome! I also have the t-shirt book and its the best book ever for the summer! I'm one of those people who don't want to look like everybody else and these books are perfect for people like me who like to add a little somethin somethin to they're look. It's also great for projects if you're a teacher or summer camp councelor for jr. high and teens. Everybody already has an old t-shirt and pair of jeans! Plus your recycling! Go green!
I Love this book!.......2007-08-13
This is my favorite reconstruction book for sure. All of by friends that come ove cant help but thumb through it too, it is actually quite luring with the title. The spiral binding is awesome, you dont have to worry about losing your spot while you are working on a garment. These patterns are so cute. I have made 2 things from this book so far, the sun dress and the baby dress, they turned out so cool. I can't wait to try more!
Great for Creative teens on a Budget........2007-07-16
With the current styles teens can get great looks on a budget and have fun creating them.
Great ideas and diagrams!.......2007-07-06
I am very impressed with the ideas in this book - not just refashioning clothing, but using jeans for everything from skirts & shirts to bags, cd organizers, and mail sorters. Brilliant stuff. Very well executed too - no complex patterns here, not too many details. My only complaints would be (1) They really could have stopped at 30 or 50... with 99 designs some were "reaching" a bit (and some were longer/shorter/backward versions of practically the same things)... (2) they may have oversimplified a bit - without real patterns or sizing, I wonder how these will turn out.... (3) What, no blanket/quilt idea? Or curtains? That seemed so obvious! But otherwise, certainly great ideas here and very innovative and easy... a good starting point!
even better than the first!.......2007-04-06
I personally am a HUGE fan of the first "99 ways" book. I made tons of my old t-shirts destined for the trash, into some new, avant-garde, ultra-wearable items! I didn't think the new denim book would even be able to compare to the old book. Boy, was I wrong!! This new denim book has so many unique and creative ideas to dress up your denim into new and fabulously useful items. This book even has awesome new pictures of the finished items to accompany the very talented drawings! I love that I can see a true sample of each item. I've already made the ipod case (Zack) and really cute bag (Lily). I use both all the time and they are essential, yet functional and very very stylish. I can't wait to make more denim items.
I would highly recommend this book to any one who needs to spice up their wardrobes, their coffee tables, or their lives.

pleased some what.......2007-01-21
The book isnt everything we were looking for,it is fun and it does show you things to make but not enough. My son made a few things but some of the things in the book are not something you would make. He did say the frame was to long to make.
He did make a wallet and he uses it. I just thought there would be more things in it.
Great for those crafty kids!!.......2006-12-29
Duct Tape is cheap..and it's available in a wide array of colors now too.
My daughter got this book from us for Christmas, along with about 5 rolls of tape that I bought separately.
She LOVES this book. It has about 25 different crafts...including clothing, glasses, and hats you can make from tape.
Great fun! She spent several hours making things.

Great for Teachers.......2006-07-15
My high school students loved the design unit I taught based on the elements of design by creating accessories with duct tape. Written by a high school student who was also bitten by the duct tape bug, makes this book very relevant to teens. In fact, they got so involved they worked till the bell rang and had to hurry to their next class.
The projects are relatively simple and the instructions are easy to follow. There is a variety of projects from wallets and purses to can holders and a tie for her dad. This is a great starter book for the duct tape enthusiast. The price is very reasonable.
Who knows, maybe your teen will get hooked and win the Duck Tape Prom clothing scholarship.

A Must For Intrested Duct Tape Amateurs!.......2006-03-22
When I first saw this book I was intrested in but compleately inadept with duct tape. This book gave me ideas, inspiration and instructions.
It really helped me get going, and I am now much better with duct tape and have even compleated several pieces of costume clothing!
Don't get me wrong, using duct tape and making it look nice take a lot of effort. Learning to make your duct tape creations look great will take a lot of patience and a lot of time you can dedicate to it until you get the hang of it you will have to make things over and over so they will look good.
If you are willing to spend the time (and duct tape) to make things it's a ton of fun and is definently worth the effort when you finish your first creation.
I'd recomend this book to ages 9 and up.
Book Description
Some of you may look at me and think, That girl's never had an insecure day in her life.Well, I think my experiences will prove that you can't always judge a book by its cover (not even this one). I've struggled with chronic warts, poor body image and one too many broken hearts on the road to supermodel status. And I know all about pressure we're put under to be perfect. That's why I wrote this book. Between the life lessons I've learned and the practical tips I've added from my friends in the fashion biz, this book will show you how to look and feel beautiful -- inside and out.
Skin: How to get and keep that skin of yours glowing, from sun care to zit-zappers, from body art to body piercing.
Makeup: From keeping it real and natural to taking a walk on the wild side.
Hair: The Lowdown on dyes, cuts and styles, from waves to weaves.
Health: Working out, eating right and dealing with days when you're too pooped to pump iron.
Fashion: Stylin' and profilin', from hot trends to classic chic, designer habits to great fakes.
Alcohol and Drugs: On kicking bad habits, avoiding temptation and the path to reaching a natural high.
Relationships: Straight talk from girls' hearts and souls on good love, bad breakups and making a love connection that lasts.
Self-loving: Learning to accept the fool in you, as well as the part that got it goin' on.

fun to read.......2005-10-22
I really enjoyed reading this book. It's more than just looking good. Yes, there is a ton of information on skin care, makeup, body care, etc, but Ms. Banks also includes self-esteem, sex, generosity, self-respect, smoking, alcohol, and more.
I expected a more frivolous book from a supermodel, but this is real quality. Tyra seems like someone you would know. She has such a friendly, sweet attitude reflected in her writing and is so humble.
This book is filled with pictures, lots of color, and is fun to read. Great book!
Must Have for All Teens!.......2005-09-20
This book covers everything from pre-teen awkwardness to dating responsibly. Tyra has done an excellent job not only talking the talk but walking the walk! This book should be released and for all to enjoy.
A Keepsake!.......2003-07-29
I fell in love with this book since its release and highly recommend it. Sure, it contains tons of photos of Tyra, but this is the very nature of her work, people... HELLOOOOO. And it's obvious this book was going to focus on her by its title, it isn't called 'YOUR Beauty, Inside Out', now is it? Anyways, looking at her never gets boring because the pics are all varying in style and purpose. If you're a fan of Tyra or appreciate sexy-yet-wholesome beauty & personality then you'll cherish this book. It's one-parts autobiography, one-parts pictorial, and 1-parts self-improvement advice, the works mixed together! I get a strong feeling that this was the intention of Banks & Blake and I think it makes for a unique and fun reading experience.
Model Beauty.......2002-05-20
As a model myself, I found Tyra's book to be informative and fun at the same time. I suggest it to all women, especially young girls just getting into the "make-up scene".
Tyra, you are definitely the best!!!.......2001-05-30
There are lots of models in this world all with beautiful and distinctful looks, but the same personality. A typical model might act like she's all too good for herself---like an ordinary person is below her...that's posh!!! Tyra...there's something different about her. She shows the world who she really is---not being afraid of what other people might think of her. I'm an aspiring model and I take modeling very seriously as other models might and I too, also have a reputation to keep as other models might. But I don't act like I'm shy and quiet most of the time when I'm really not---I'm myself. I don't try to act a certain character to fit other people's bill. Tyra Banks is my #1 role model aside from God and my parents. She proved to me with this book that she's very different from your typical model. In this book, she revealed her true self and encourages other to do the same. I'm not saying that all models in the world are the same; I'm very positive some are different. Models are not only models for clothing ads, magazines, billboards, etc.; but they're also models to set a good example for other people---young, old, middle age. Tyra is a perfect example and trust me, you will LOVE her book. If you don't have it already, GO GET IT! ENJOY!!!

Book Description
In the bestselling tradition of The Devil Wears Prada, Karen Yampolsky's hilarious and disarmingly candid debut goes deep inside the glossy, glamorous, and completely ruthless world of magazine publishing, where bitchiness and betrayal are always in vogue, and this month's hotshots are just one dud issue away from a pink slip and a one-line career obit on Page Six...
As a teenager at a prestigious prep school, Jill White studied her roommate's magazines, filled with airbrushed-beyond-recognition photos of whisper-thin blondes who hadn't finished a meal since third grade. She dreamed of one day starting a magazine of her own that would feature women of all sizes and colors--smart, witty, real women with aspirations beyond tinier thighs and shinier hair.
Flash forward several years and a couple of giant leaps up the career ladder, and Jill has it all. Jill magazine is a huge hit, and her fabulous life comes complete with free designer clothes, an abundance of celeb friends, a shamelessly huge salary, and a framed Time magazine cover in her office featuring her beaming face over the legend, "Jill White, Media Wunderkind." Now that mega-successful Nestrom Media has taken over Jill's parent company, its future should be assured. Jill shares the fifteenth floor of the Nestrom building with illustrious Fashionista magazine, and the Nestrom suits are panting with admiration for both Jill and Jill.
But the ashes from the postcoital cigarette have barely hit the floor before Jill's new bosses start barking about getting ad revenue up and toning down articles like "His penis is not a toy...or is it?" in favor of fluff pieces with the reality star du jour. What smelled like team spirit devolves into a bitter game of manipulation and backstabbing. With Ellen Cutter, the blond, bland, Bergdorfed CEO of Nestrom Media, and Liz Alexander, Jill's publisher (and Ellen's conniving sidekick) suddenly aligned against Jill, plus a paranoid new managing editor with an addiction to spying, the situation is as grim as the magazine's decidedly unfabulous new offices. Reluctant to jump ship, and equally reluctant to watch as her baby morphs into yet another cheesy rag, Jill fights back, even as Ellen and Liz plot her next move for her. With her name, her creation, and her future all on the line, Jill realizes mean girls don't get left behind in high school--they grow up and work in publishing...

A Somewhat Smarter Chick Lit Offering.......2007-09-03
While I won't say this is a great book, I did find it to be quite entertaining. It didn't have the humor or snap of The Devil Wears Prada or some others of the same genre, but Yampolsky did a good job of creating mostly believable characters with a storyline that rang true, as well. This may not be the best book she ever writes, but I think it's proof that Karen Yampolsky is an author to look out for.
NEW YORK FASHION SCENE REDUX.......2007-08-24
Seems that readers just can't get enough of the mean and mendacious top execs who people the fashion magazine world. So, along comes Karen Yampolsky who spent nine years as right-hand to Jane Pratt, founder of Jane Magazine, to give that rather over worn topic another go round.
Heroine Jill White was raised in a commune by hippie parents. Though her parents seemed distant, evidently her early education was first-rate as she easily nabs a scholarship to an upscale Eastern prep school. It seems to stretch credulity a bit to believe that there was not one friendly person among faculty or student body at the fictional Hillander, but that's her story and she stuck to it. Thus, Jill spent four miserable lonely years but did graduate with a 4.0.
That sterling grade point earned her another scholarship to Bennington in Vermont where there were quite a few friendly faces. Along the way Jill had dreamed of starting her own magazine. So, after Bennington she takes on New York or to be more precise it takes her.
She does eventually have her own magazine called not surprisingly "Jill," and it's a smash hit. She's living on top of the world with all the free goodies anyone could want and her face on the cover of Time. Then "Jill" is bought by Nestrom Media, and "Jill" rapidly tumbles down the ladder of their empire. Enter the predictable nasty editors Liz and Ellen, which is about where this reader began feeling "Been there, done that."
Of course, Jill struggles to keep her magazine the over-the-top publication she had nurtured, but she also has life choices to make.
"Falling Out of Fashion" strives mightily to emulate "The Devil Wears Prada" but it lacks that book's originality and edge. Jill does a great deal of kvetching so it's a little difficult to pull for her, and the book could have used a more gimlet eyed editor. However, if the fictionalized New York fashion scene is your reading pleasure, this one's for you.
- Gail Cooke
Like every other one.......2007-07-16
This book so badly wants to grab the success that The Devil Wears Prada got, but it won't.
The jump from present to past to present was disjointed and could be confusing. The main character was too good to be true, even when screwing over her friends, who randomly forgive her. I thought it was interesting how "Jill's" assistant was the most perfect person in the book who could do no wrong- a character based on the author herself.
Even for so-called "chick lit," this was insulting to readers' intelligence. The "villians" of the novel were caracatures of the ice queens seen in movies. We're supposed to feel sorry for Jill, since she started out with no friends, but about the time she's ignoring her best friend for the hundredth time, that sympathy is basically gone.
The only reason I'm giving it 2 is because it involves Jane magazine, which is a favorite of mine and which I'm sad to see go.
This author needs to go back to sucking up and being someone's assistant/occasional editor.
Great Summer Read and Glimpse into the Jane World.......2007-07-11
This book is a smart, engaging look into the exciting but sometimes backstabbing magazine world, and a fun way to experience vicariously the kind of real-life "wunderkind" career Jane Pratt, the real person on whom the book is based, had.
One of the things I enjoyed most about the book was how "Jill," the main character in the novel, reconciled her country-educated-but-poor-hippie roots with the prep school and elite world she entered as a teen and adult. I also like how she grapples with her on-again off-again relationship with her best friend, Sarah, which teeters under the weight of her big career.
My only nit to pick with the book is Jill comes off as a little too superhuman in the book, with very few flaws and a few other aspects of her life a little too perfect, without giving too much away. There are some struggles in there, but the two preppy "ice queen" villainesses in the mag world are also a bit one-dimensional. Still, it's a great escape and a wonderful summer read.
Page-turner.......2007-06-10
Finally, a fun women's book written for thinking adults! Interesting, full of wit and humor, I read it in one weekend. Falling Out of Fashion is a fun blend of the fantasy life that most people will never experience except through books, balanced with real-world experiences of IVF, first jobs, changing relationships with old friends, romantic relationships, etc. A great read, couldn't put it down.

Book Description
Shawn Mortensen sees it first. He appreciates the exceptional before it is recognized by the others. He is a `first responder' in the emergencies of culture.Glenn O'Brien
Over the last fifteen years, Shawn Mortensen has photographed cutting-edge culture-makers while also revealing the gritty reality of urban street life and the world's political climate. Truly with his finger on the pulse, Mortensen took photographs of the in crowd before they were the in crowd. His subjects range from celebrities such as Gwen Stefani, Marcello Mastroianni, and Tupac Shakur to contemporary artists like Raymond Pettibon, Brice Marden, and Francesco Clemente. Yet these portraits are juxtaposed with haunting photo essays on the Zapatista movement in Chiapas, Mexico; the ghettoes of Jamaica; and the landscape of Mongoliaoften with startling results.

Book Description
Beautiful and historic African carpets, baskets, and other textiles provide the design inspiration for these 16 sophisticated knitted cardigans, pullovers, and sweater vests. Intended for seasoned knitters, these projects use domino, double knitting, entrelac, intarsia, and stranded two-color techniques worked in fingering-weight yarns. The Shoowa Vest, the African Domino Pullover, and the Arrowheads Cropped Pullover show off fancy stitching, while other designs feature colors borrowed from the mud-dried fabrics of Mali, the block patterns of Ghana, or motifs from Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Zaire, and Zimbabwe. African animals decorate the Giraffe Vest and Zebra Cardigan, and elsewhere leaping antelope and birds in flight are used in repeating patterns. Full instructions and charted patterns for at least two adult sizes are provided for each design and high-quality photographs of the finished pieces showcase these classic additions to any wardrobe.
Customer Reviews:
Gorgeous modern pattern knitting for the experienced knitter.......2006-03-16
"Knitting Out of Africa" employs the abstractly modern traditional designs of Mali mudcloth, Zimbabwe basketweaving and other designs to create wonderful designer garments. The knitting is mostly suitable for the intermediate to advance knitter, mainly for the colorwork and assembly techniques.
My favorite designs in the book are the ones taken from basketweaving. There is a funnel neck pullover and a long tunic, both inspired by these baskets. Another great design is a modular knitting domino, rather like a kimono, with flap collar and wonderful black-white-gray geometric design. There are some intarsia animal prints, as well. All are modern looking, quite stylish and would make one-of-a-kind, elegant garments. Some designs could be adapted for men, but these are primarily women's sweaters.
Big thumbs up if you like pattern or colorwork.
Fingering weight yarn dreams but.....there be steeks!.......2006-03-14
I am very fond of this book. There is a sophistication of color in the designs that I find appealing. I prefer fingering weight yarn and if you do as well, you'll love the designs in this book. I'm not a fan of zippers in sweaters but the patterns which include zippers could easily be turned into a v-neck, etc.
I was surprised at how many of the patterns used steeks. Steeks require you to cut your knitting in a variety of ways (for sleeves, cardigan fronts, necklines). All of these can be reconfigured if you dislike steeks. Be aware of the need to noodle with the patterns if you choose not to steek.
The sleeveless giraffe pullover is to die for!
Inspiring ideas for the advanced knitter.......2006-03-01
As the title suggests, these are not sweaters for the inexperienced knitter. They are intricate works of art, and the recommended needle sizes show they are not for the impatent knitter. Read through the knitting techniques mentioned in the introduction, and if you aren't familiar with them, and you still want to make the gorgeous sweaters herein, then learn the technique elsewhere before tackling these sublime designs. You'll be amply rewarded for your efforts.
Beautiful Sweaters!.......2006-02-15
I was uncertain how I would like the sweaters in this book but after I saw them I realized there isn't a bad one in the bunch. They're classy interesting geometric designs. I'm not sure which one to make first. The only possible concern with this book is that a number of sweaters require fingering yarn.
Well worth the purchase and well worth knitting!
Beautiful glorious patterns.......2006-01-19
I love anything that has a sort of "wild" flare to it, and this book is filled with it. The patterns will certainly give you a good challenge, which we all need now and then. The tutorials are written so well that if you are a "medium" knitter, you will probably feel very comfortable trying these patterns.
