5 out of 5 stars Simple Solered Jewelry & Accessories.......2007-09-02

I recently purchsed two soldered pendants at a craft show and desperately wanted to find out how to make these myself. I found this book and it is a wonderful, comprehensive, easy to understand book on this technique. Immediately was able to make my own with complete confidence. Highly recommend.

2 out of 5 stars Not what I thought. No sterling silver...........2007-08-06

I purchased this book with the idea of learning how to do some simple sterling silver soldering. This book has no information on how to solder silver. It describes stain glass soldering techniques which uses a much lower temperature solder. Since I only work with sterling silver I sent the book back. However I must say that it is a very nice book. There are a lot of nice projects which look relatively easy. So if you want to make interesting jewelry that does not use semi precious or precious materials this could be it.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Delightful book!.......2007-07-22

This book is simply fabulous! The details and descriptions make a seemingly challenging craft easy to master. The girls at Simply Swank are simply divine! So accessible and personable! True customer service! Check out their website for more goodies and instruction. The DVD that they have provides a ton of practical information on how to solder with ease and I can't wait to try out my new Simply Swank soldering kit to make all the gorgeous jewelry and decorative accessories in the book and more. The possibilities for this new idea are endless. Definitely a great book to have in your collection whether you are a jewelry artist like me or a scrapbooker, or someone who enjoys making decorations, like Christmas ornaments. Many possibilities from this one simple craft!

5 out of 5 stars Learn to Solder - the Right Way!!!.......2007-05-22

Of all my books on metal - this is absolutely the best one I have! Directions and instructions are very clear and understandable. There are some great projects to practice with and build your confidence. The use of this excellent book has improved my skills considerably. I am so glad I found it!

4 out of 5 stars Simple Soldered Jewelry & Accessories.......2007-05-20

Concise instructions, excellent close-up photographic detail. My only disappointment is that mixed in with the jewelry that wowed me was some that was just ok. But, I would recommend the book simply because the techniques are sound and easy to understand. And, there's some very cool and imaginative jewelry in this book.

Book Description

More artists make necklaces than any other form of jewelry—and these pieces are among the most exquisite ever created. Selected from over 5,000 entries, they range from unique chokers to artful collars. Some showcase precious metals and gems, while others use more unusual materials, including plastic, wood, paper, and glass. They’re forged, cast, and woven, and have surface embellishments that run the gamut from inlay to enameling. And the variety is simply astonishing: Classic bejeweled chains appear next to avant-garde felted wool constructions. Some of the eye-catching, full-color images feature enlightening quotes from the creators themselves. Jewelers, students, collectors, and anyone who loves beautiful objects will treasure this extensive collection—the largest of its kind.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Selection Of Ideas And Applications.......2007-09-19

I bought this book to help me think about my own designs for jewelry and products. The wide variety of shapes, materials and techniques is exactly what I wanted to see. Recommended to beginning and intermediate students.

5 out of 5 stars Not traditional .......2007-01-15

This was a gift for my daughter - a jewelry major. This is NOT for those who are making "beaded jewelry". The pieces shown are pieces of art - some wearable and others simple art. Some are elegant, some very unique. Do not buy this book if you are looking for traditional necklaces. It is a great book for those who appreciate jewelry as an art form.

2 out of 5 stars Not the best in the series .......2007-01-07

As an avid collector of jewellery books, jewellery designer, maufacturer and teacher, I was waiting with baited breath for this to arrive. I am unfortunately disappointed with it. ( Having loved brooches, rings and Polymer ). This book heavily focused on Sterling Silver, ( where was Precious Metal Clay - not one example - appalling!, I hope this was not bias by the esteemed juror??). Not enough examples of mixed media and many of the photos contained in other publications. Some were truly beautiful and inspirational, whilst others were an insult, they should be in a 500 garments, they were shawls!(Carol Fishers Canvas), or Christoph Freier's wonderful granite bolders with two gold bolders, placed as a necklace on lawn were fabulous but they were sculpture. Taking the title "Interpretation" to the extreme you see 20kg rocks on grass, yes they are a representation of a necklace but it does not belong in this book, I am looking for jewellery. In fact, I was sorely disappointed as at least 50% of the items were so over the top or shaped so that they could not ever be worn. Perhaps they should have made this book two - 500 Wearable and 500 Non Wearable! I wait for 500 Earrings with concern now. I just hope Lark can bring back the original high standard of this series, together with a wider diversity of media and certainly not leaving out important media such as Precious Metal Clay. Paper, wood and glass-lampwork, felt, were either non existent or poorly represented. Borrow from the Library, save your pennies and purchase the spectacular Art Jewelry Today by Dona Meilach.

5 out of 5 stars amazing necklaces.......2006-12-20

The work in this book, as with the others in the series of books from Lark, is truly amazing. Forget your preconceptions of the necklace. This is art, some of which is wearable and some isn't. The pieces are beautiful and a testament to the creativity of jewelry artists around the world. I am in awe of the other artists.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Brilliant.......2006-11-23

Absolutely brilliant. There's nothing more to say. The above comment is ridiculous and probably was written by someone who was planning on using the 'ideas' in the book to copy in a beaded fashion. Sorry, some of us actually appreciate art in different forms and through different medium. Not all 'necklaces' are made of plastic beads and nylon string.

5 out of 5 stars A Springboard for Successful Wire Wrapped jewelry!.......2007-09-15

I have been designing jewelry for 12 years. There is always some elusive technique that I cannot find really good tutorial for. This book offered an excellent tutorial for wire wrapping briolettes. A great book for beginners with courage and moxy. A terrific book for intermediate skilled artisans. Whether you like the pastel colors used in the tutorials or not, the skills demonstrated in the book are a terrific springboard for developing your own individual style of artistic expression in composition that will render long enduring quality work-which is as it should be. The projects, with very little imagination, have room to personalize and augment into a design that is more than the initial project offered. All projects have an elegance and grace that are missing from many of the other books in my reference library. I highly recommend this one.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful projects to inspire you.......2007-06-02

This book has some wonderful projects to inspire the buddinhg jeweler, with easy to follow instructions, I would recommend this book to have in your library and use as a reference.

4 out of 5 stars Teen's Review.......2007-02-03

I LOVE beading and this book was a very nice one. I looked through over 20 bead books to find just the right one of my favorite two. I like that the instructions are in depth but not too complicated. The pictures are really helpful and motivating. I feel like I am capable of creating anything in this book. For absolute beginners, I think some of the projects are too much especially for those who have little patience. I thought that some of the pieces were gorgeous but a couple of them I really dislike.
For You if...
you have patience
you've had a little experience in beading
you have the supplies (all the plyers, some beads, etc.)
you're easily inspired
you want a book that uses a wide range of tecniques

Not For You if...
you're just starting beading
you don't want to make jewelry
you want something REALLY different
you're looking for strictly an inspirational book
you don't like transparent beads and light colors (they use a lot of those)

4 out of 5 stars Beautifully Georgeus.......2007-01-10

M.T. Ryan beautifully combine stones & materials that give the 'bling' and elegance effect on each of the projects. With step by step pictures & instruction, this book is a DO for beginners. For intermediate level, you'll find another insight in combining material, choosing colors and experimenting more in using georgeus chunky stones!

4 out of 5 stars Beaded Jewellery.......2006-11-09

A very nice book - great instructions and pictures. Most of the jewellery is made with wire as opposed to thread. Beads are certainly easily obtained from any good bead shop. I would recommend to anyone who likes working with wire.

Book Description

• Beaders and wireworkers will be en-chain-ted by the chance to make their own chains • Classical chain designs in silver, copper, and brass • Entire chain-making process is explained and illustrated step-by-step • One of a kind!

Handcrafting Chain and Bead Jewelry shows how to create beautiful, dimensional silver, copper, and brass chains using simple tools. The main style is based on the elegant, classical Byzantine pattern, and uses the Golden Ratio to determine the circumference of a chain's interlocking rings based on the thickness of the wire. Illustrated step-by-step directions show how to calculate the circumference of the rings, how to wrap wire into coils, how to cut, and finally, how to assemble the chain. Starting from the basic Byzantine, new chain makers can then progress to increasingly Byzantine variations, including linear, knot, crown, and combination chains. Incorporating beads and charms offers endless possibilities for crafters who will soon, surely, be locked up in chains!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very informative.......2007-09-29

This book is very detailed and tells you everything you need to know to make chain maille. Lots of how to hints and it tells you the tools and supplies you need for each project. The diagrams and pictures are easily understandable and easy to follow. I made a bracelet which my daughter wore to Ren Faire and got several compliments. I recommend this book to everyone that has ever been interested in chain maille.

1 out of 5 stars Unimpressed.......2007-09-27

I couldnt wait to get this book having just started with chain maile and beads. I thought it lacked designs, with only three weaves featured. Not many projects featuring beads. The first 40 pages is mainly on wire types and how to make jump rings.

5 out of 5 stars A great design idea and "recipe" book!.......2007-06-13

I thought the directions were great and easy to follow, but I have some experience with most of these weaves. I wasn't looking for a "how to" book, you can see tons of CGI tutorials for free via the chainmailleartisans community. What I got most out of this book were design ideas, tips to weave beads into my chainmaille jewelry by tucking the jewelry wire through the rings, and the recipes of rings required! For everything I've tried from the book, the quantities and ring sizes have been dead on and easy to order. I appreciated the bead size info with the great pictures, it gave me the ability to say "I'd use something smaller/larger there" and know what to go buy instead of guessing at what size they used. I'd love to see more designs, more pictures, and more recipes of what to buy.

5 out of 5 stars Handcrafting Chain and Bead jewellery.......2007-04-13

Outstanding book, for those wishing to make chain maille with a difference. Learn the most popular pattern weave, and apply it in many ways!

Any interested in jewelry making possibilities will love Handcrafting Chain and Bead Jewelry, a guide to creating chain and bead jewelry using both old designs and new ideas. Scott David Plumlee is an authority on ancient chain designs: his focus allows for an ideal blend of styles and offers step-by-step directions backed by color photos. From how to use specialty tools and selecting wire and beads to assembling over twenty unique necklaces, bracelets and earrings, Handcrafting Chain and Bead Jewelry will reach novices, neo-pro jewelers and public libraries strong in crafts.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Incomplete and Expensive.......2007-09-23

I had to return this book because it was incomplete. I have been bead weaving for seven years and have purchased about 50 books on beading.
I have never paid $39.95 for a bead book before; most books are in the $20-$30 range. Therefore, I was expecting a fabulous, detailed book. Did I get it? No! There is a serious flaw in the book. It does not list the amount of beads you need for any of the projects. All other books list the amount of grams of seed beads and a number for the amount of crystals or other beads you need to complete a project. The author left out vital information.

5 out of 5 stars Sandra, Queen of Seed Beads.......2007-09-20

This is an amazing book if you love to weave. I've made almost every pattern in the book (these projects make great gifts that are always appreciated). Her illustrations and instructions are easy to follow. Okay, some of these patterns may have up to 20 steps to repeat over and over until the piece is done, but the work is worth it -- and challenging. Always a plus.

I've bought many of Sandra's designs off her website, but I started with this book from Amazon. I highly recommend it, and yes, it's worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Happy beader.......2007-09-18

So glad I ordered this book! Its excellent. Directions are easy to grasp and apply and the pieces are just exquisite. This author has really delivered a wonderful book from which to draw inspiration and knowledge of this craft. Very pleased.

This book is so easy to follow. I have been using it to make jewelry for my best friend's wedding and she has totally fallen in love with the necklaces I've finished so far for her and the flowergirl. I can't wait to start on the bridesmaids necklaces, it is so much fun! I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys beadweaving.

2 out of 5 stars Expensive .......2007-08-03

Same two techniques used repeatedly in the same way throughout the book: Right-angle weave and "Coraling Technique" (actually branch fringing), both can be easily found on internet. The 10 projects are all the same with some alterations (which are presented as "different" projects). In my opinion there was no need to publish a whole book (more accurately a 45 pages booklet with large pictures-good for visual learner- but for obvious reason to fill the pages) on just two techniques at such price.
I could give the book 3 star, but the price bothers me since you can find a lot of books with many different projects at the same price.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Jewelry.......2006-03-17

Varvara has done it again. Her books are clearly illustrated and the projects do not fail to be beautiful. The techniques are surprisingly easy and success is possible even on a first try basis. Most of the projects are made with 11 seed beads. The projects are beautiful, easy and very gratifying.

3 out of 5 stars Fancy Branch Fringe.......2005-12-17

The pieces in ths book are gorgeous and frothy, but not anything I'm likely to wear. Her 'Coraling Technique' is really just branch fringing taken to extremes; quite beautiful extremes.

It's a nice book (45 pages) to have in my beading library but I wish I'd spent my money on something more diverse.

4 out of 5 stars Coraling Technique: Step by Step Instructions for Making Ten ORiginal Design Necklaces, Bracelets & Earrings..........2005-09-15

An excellent guide for Coraling. I found the book interesting and helpful.

5 out of 5 stars BEST LITTLE BOOK.......2005-07-27

I have loved the coraling technique since I started with it a few months back. I was so excited to have found this book and couldn't wait to order it. In fact, I have now ordered her other books.

The book is beautiful with very clear instructions and wonderful ideas. Varvara is such a great artist.

4 out of 5 stars Evita.......2006-08-08

Katie O'Brien plays the violin at a tube station to earn money for fashionable clothes. Playing a theme from EVITA she is hit on the back of the head. Racer calls to tell Jury he is going to go to Hertford, not Northants, for the weekend. The reader finds Melrose Plant drinking shooting sherry with his aunt, Agatha Ardry, as he tries to sneak off to join Jury in the murder investigation. It seems that a sort of bird watching fanatic, Ernestine Craigie, has spotted the dead body looking through her binoculars. The body of the murder victim rests in the vicinity of an overgrown public footpath in the Horndean woods.

The violinist ends up in the hospital in a coma. She is the daughter of the female publican of the village, Mary O'Brien. The pub is called the Bold Blue Boy. The identity of the homicide victim is Cora Binns. There are connections. The girl in a coma comes from the village where Cora Binns's body is discovered. She was playing at the tube station, Wembley Knotts, from which Cora Binns departed to travel to Littlebourne. After a far amount of dithering, Melrose Plant and Richard Jury meet up at the pub, the Bold Blue Boy. It is learned that the girl in the coma, Katie, gave a child a book just in case. The child, Emily, gives the book to Melrose Plant.

Then there is another incident occurring at a village fete. It seems the two homicide victims worked at the same secretarial agency. A valuable necklace, stolen previously from one of the inhabitants of Littlebourne, is discovered in a crevice at the Wembley Knotts Underground Station. Katie dies. Her violin teacher plays Pavanne for a Dead Princess at the site, the station. There is a sting operation resulting in the capture of the wrongdoer.

Polly Praed and Jenny Kennington are minor characters in this adventure. The title, of course, is the name of another pub having significance to the mystery and neatly coinciding, (necklace=necklace), with one of the clues to the three deaths.

4 out of 5 stars A reissued Richard Jury novel.......2005-05-21

I am looking at the January 2004 Reissue by Onyx. The original copyright is 1983, so don't be surprised by the reference to Princess Di. The settings for the novel are London and the small suburban town of Littlebourne. The Anodyne Necklace is the name of a working class pub in London.

The storyline is interesting, with a mugging and a couple of murders that have to be drawn together. The story revolves around a valuable stolen emerald, set into a necklace. The thief, who had been a trusted personal secretary to the moderately wealthy owner, was killed in an accident shortly after the theft. He left a clue to the location where he concealed the jewelry, but the clue itself became concealed.

Now it is a year later. People who might have knowledge about the necklace are being assaulted and killed. There appears to be an unknown accomplice to the theft. Richard Jury and Melrose Plant track down the information, and leads take them in various directions, including a Wizards snd Warriors game. It seems that the deceased thief was a master of the game, and the clue seems to be in a game map.

The plot is complex and seems, perhaps, to be overly contrived in places. The author seems to have a fixation on flashers (they have shown up in other novels), and in this novel we have Ash the Flash and his young son, Friendly. The flashers seem peripheral to the main plot.

The novel has a surprise ending when the identity of the accomplice is revealed. It is not great literature, but provides an interesting whodunit for light reading.

A previous reviewer is incorrect in stating that this is the first novel in the Jury/Plant series. The first novel in the series is "The Man with a Load of Mischief." I believe that this is the third novel in the series (there is a Listmania listing available, prepared by a different reviewer). A local bookseller has recently stocked the full series, so I believe the full series has been reissued.

5 out of 5 stars Melrose & Jury - done with Panache by Curry.......2004-07-27

When I first read the Jury and Plant series, all the books named after Pubs, I was shocked to learn she was American. She just does Brit droll humor to a T. I was even more shocked when later I learned that Grimes was actually dropped by Knopf Publishing, saying she was not making her advance back on the Jury series. Well, she has gone on to make them eat those words as every one is now a bestseller. I absolutely love to read, but in this instance, I actually prefer to enjoy the audio tapes simply because they are done by the great Tim Curry. As Grimes does Brit humor to perfection, Tim brings Richard Plant, Melrose Plant and his indomitable Aunt Agatha so perfectly. Curry slips into one character after another with such panache - right down to children. The combination of Grimes and Curry is just not to be missed.

In the Anodyne Necklace, a violin, an ancent emerald necklace and a severed finger are clue to solving the ghastly murder in the wood of Littlebourne. The town is filled with dotty birdwatchers, a pretentious Peer, and more suspects than Jury can handle. Naturally, the ever-so-helpful, Melrose Plant, a Peer who has shun his titles, tags along to aid his friend - actually, to escape his Aunt Agatha who refuses to let Melrose give up his titles. The key unriddling the Littlebourne mystery is hidden in coded treasure map.

It's great full all they way, and an absolutely must for Curry fans! Martha loves the old saying he who laughs last...she has been having one big giggle on the shortsightedness of Knopf ever since!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2004-06-23

This book was absolutely awesome. I couldn't put it down the entire time I was reading it! I definately suggest any of the Richard Jury books to anyone who likes mystery books!

Where were the kisses? Weetzie Bat wondered. And so begins a magical journey of discovery. As she turns forty and the relationship with her secret-agent lover-man Max falls apart, Weetzie packs up her lime green and bright orange bikini, orange suede sneakers, and Pucci tunic, jumps in her '65 mint green Thunderbird, and leaves.

Weetzie finds herself at the enchanted pink hotel in sparkling Los Angeles, where she once shied away from a kiss that may have led her to the love of her life. Now she returns, perhaps in search of her lost passion, and meets an otherworldy cast of characters, among them a blue-skinned receptionist, an invisible cleaning lady, a seductive fawn, and a sushi-eating mermaid who gives her a kiss that sets the wheel of self-discovery in motion.

Block invests every scene with equal shots of magic and realism, rendering her heroine and supporting players in vivid, poetic detail. In Necklace of Kisses the fans that have grown up with Weetzie Bat will be able to meet her in adulthood and find that life is still no less trying and no less full of wonder.

5 out of 5 stars A Grown Up Oz.......2007-06-23

It looked like chick lit, so I picked it up last week. I have been drawn to lighter fare since losing Nat. My mind is wrapped around so many other things, that it is harder to attach myself emotionally to a story. However, this book wasn't exactly chick lit. I had never read the Weetzie Bat books, or anything else by this author for that matter, so I went in blind. It was a fabulous trip. Block's story winds through reality but includes magic at every turn. This book has a captured mermaid, changlings, floating brides, magic spider weavings... It was like a grown up Oz. And, from me, that is high praise. I was so sad to read the last page and close the book. I picked up the first of the Weetzie Bat books from the library and am reading that now. I will let you know what I think when I have finished reading.

5 out of 5 stars i love weetzie........2007-05-17

i fell in love with weetzie bat about 8 years ago. i was searching for books and i ran across this one and bought it instantly. i was taken back to weetzie's beautiful world but this time filled with mermaids and drag queens. i finished it in a few days and needless to say i totally fell in love with it. i'd always felt a little incomplete at the end of dangerous angels and this finished it perfectly.

all in all...it was amazing. i HIGHLY recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome back, Weetzie!.......2006-12-28

A friend gave me a copy of "Weetzie Bat" in the late 90's and told me I must read it because I was very much Weetzie. Unsure what she meant, I took the book and devoured it in one brief sitting. Since then, I've read all the books in the "Dangerous Angels" series, as well as other non-Weetzie titles, and go back to them often. Block's word pictures and fantasy scapes thrill me to no end. Her imagery moves me.

I recently purchased "Necklace of Kisses" and was totally blown away by this book. After recently turning 40 myself, I found I could relate to Weetzie's search for self at the beginning of midlife. This book reinforced the truth that life doesn't end at 40...in some ways, it begins anew.

To anyone contemplating this book (especially those hip New Wave/punk grrls from the 80's who are turning 40 soon) please take a chance on it. It will show you that you can still be you as you are, no matter what age you may be.

Here's to the Weetzie in us all!

5 out of 5 stars I've missed you, Weetzie!.......2006-06-25

How comforting to know how Weetzie and her family are doing! I thought this book was excellent. I read it quickly, telling my husband to shut up when he tried to interupt.
Some of the reviews mentioned the 9/11 thing was a little heavy but I didn't get that, it was mentioned once- and Max always was a little intense.
God, I hope there's more!
I loved Weetzie before, but now... Wow!

5 out of 5 stars like an old friend.......2006-05-11

while doing research for a project for my young adult literature class on francesca i found my self on her website. i was shocked to learn she had a new book out that i hadn't read. i immeadiatley bought it even though i knew nothing about it. i just knew that my old friend would not let me down.i had come across francesca and the weetzie bat family when i was 16 and needing someone to connect with.

i really liked this book, coming back to wetzie and gang after a long hiatus was just what i needed, it was like they'd never left me. this book answers the questions of what happens to a character after we finish the book. Necklace of Kisses explains what happened after we last saw Weetzie.

Book Description

Written in 1961 and now back in print, this classic and fascinating true crime story stars none other than Marie Antoinette. Four years before the French Revolution, some priceless diamonds were purchased in elaborate secrecy from a court jeweler. The jewels, not yet paid for, were delivered into the hands of the first Prelate of the Church of France. He, in turn, gave it to a countess who claimed to be acting for Marie Antoinette. Although essentially an innocent bystander, the Queen became embroiled in a scandal that fatally weakened the monarchy.

5 out of 5 stars The Scam of the century.......2005-03-31

In 1785 The Queen's Necklace scandal broke over France. Queen Marie Antoinette was alleged to have bought a diamond necklace worth over 1.6 million franks and refused to pay for it, and had Cardinal Prince Rohan, a long time courtier out of favour, arrested for it along with his accomplices the Countess de la Motte-Valois and the famous mystic Count Cagliostro.

This book is a series of fascinating first person accounts of how the necklace swindle occurred and the trial that followed it. Most of the people involved in the scandal wrote their memoirs and virtually all the court related documentation is still available in France in archives. This book is a compilation of these memoirs and legal statements made by all the parties involved in this crime which opened the monarchy and France to the fury of the revolution.

The author does not impose her own interpretation of the events on the reader, but does provide explanations to the backgrounds of the people involved and the social and political niceties of the time that explain why people acted as they did.

This book is a lively account of this important French scandal that, because of the first person accounts, reads like a novel. If the story wasn't true it would be hard to credit such a cast of interesting characters, with their extravagant and wildly different backgrounds, coming together like this to play a crucial role in the downfall of the French Monarchy. Its also very interesting to compare this book to what is portrayed in the movie of the same name. There are a number of very significant differences!

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Boring story and unlikeable heroine.......2007-04-25

Too predictable. No interesting character development. I was so bored that I skimmed much of the book. I hated the heroine's actions and lies. I was not drawn to the hero. This was my first Kat Martin book and will probably be my last. Sexual content: moderate.

4 out of 5 stars 3rd novel in The Necklace trilogy.......2006-05-26

'The Handmaiden's necklace' by Kat Martin is a fantanisic Historical Romance. The Bride's Necklace is a thirteenth century pearl diamond necklace that has the legal that if the owner has pure heart that they will have good fortune and love. This necklace has been past along through out the series. This necklace was given to the Duke in hopes that he would find true love. The story begins with the Duke engaged but his ex-fiance resurfaced five years later after a terrible scandal. The story has nice mix of romance, mystery and heartache. I loved the series and they just got better and better. The Bride's Necklace (1) The Devil's Necklace (2) The Handmaiden's Necklace(3).

2 out of 5 stars Did I miss something?.......2006-04-25

As I did not read the first two novels in this series, perhaps I missed something as I read "The Handmaiden's Necklace." For example:

1) Why was the title of the book "The Handmaiden's Necklace" when all throughout the book the item was referred to as "the Bride's necklace?" (True, Caro did take the necklace in order to assist Robert, but that was for such a short while.)

2) "Dani felt her heart kick into high gear..." Wow. Not the turn of phrase one expects to find in a historical/regency romance.

3) Addressed by other reviewers but worth another mention: Rafe waited FIVE years to decide to investigate "the incident"? Sure, one could argue he had an epiphany after seeing Dani again, but then to have the entire matter investigated and wrapped up so quickly.... HIGHLY implausible.

4) The author would have us believe that the protagonists conducted their most passionate and responsive lovemaking when they were at the height of anger with one another. Every time there was another misunderstanding/misinterpretation/deception Dani and Rafe were in each other's arms before anything was talked out. (Followed by the angry party slipping away early the next day.) This scenario might have been plausible once, but I would estimate the "resentful lover" situations accounted for half of their lovemaking.

5) The miracle baby at the end of the story: if you didn't see that one coming, especially after so many ominous "internal damage" hints, I'd be surprised. (And from a realistic perspective: with all that damage, wouldn't it have been better to write the end of the story with the baby already born?....)

After reading this book I doubt I'll peruse Ms. Martin's other offerings.

3 out of 5 stars A Second Chance At Love!!!.......2006-03-14

Ms. Martin's last entry in the Bride Trilogy is not as strong as the others...but not as dismal as it could have been. This story seemed to lack the heart the previous titles offered. Still this was a nice regency romance a stand alone read if you've not read the previous titles in the series.

Five years earlier Rafe and Dani are engaged to be married. They are in love and all is right with the world until Rafe is lead to believe his Dani has been unfaithful. He finds her in a very delicate situation with another man. Crying off from the marriage, Rafe leaves Dani to face the gossips and to be shunned for her part in the escapade. She claims innocence but Rafe is to hurt to listen. Years later Rafe has learned that he has been duped. Dani had been telling the truth and he now vows to win his ladies heart back at all costs. He follows her across the Atlantic and keeps her from marrying an American...but at what cost? He has to resort to blackmail...he will do what he must because there is still a large attraction between them. Will he ever be able to win Danielle's heart for his own?

Danielle has lived the past five years in seclusion. She has been ruined in the eyes of society when Rafe ended their betrothal all those years ago. She is wants a happy ending more then her next breathe so she agrees to marry an American. She sets sail with her ladies maid and aunt for Philadelphia. There she hopes to have a fresh start with a happy ending. She is not prepared for Rafe's arrival and explanation. Or his need to have her at all costs. She agrees to marry him...but she will not love him again. At least she thinks she won't love him...but she can't forget how he makes her feel. When someone starts trying to kill them will they be able to sort out their feelings or will a killer manage to bring an end to their happy ending.

This was a push/pull romance and honestly it did start to wear a bit thin towards the end. Still Ms. Martin was able to create a wonderful secondary romance which was a pleasant addition to the story. Rafe and Dani were endearing characters but the vehicle in which Ms. Martin kept them separate did not allow for a believable romance. This was the weaker of the three stories but a fair addition to the series.

2 out of 5 stars Kat Martin - Where is the Romance?.......2006-02-18

Kat Martin wraps up the "Bride's Necklace" trilogy, with THE HANDMAIDEN'S NECKLACE and measurably, the final entry lacks emotion. Martin's writing style is wretchedly distant and for a genre that floats in emotion, a distant writing style is a major problem!

Five years ago, their betrothal ended. Rafael Saunders, the Duke of Sheffield, promised her forever - but he believed the lies. Once, Rafael and Danielle were in love, but their marriage never happened - he had believed the lies! Losing him cut deep . . . and now . . . now . . . he wanted to do it all over again . . .

Rafael Saunders, the Duke of Sheffield, no longer was a passionate youth. Danielle's betrayal still pained him; yet, he could not forget the woman who had stolen his heart. The memory of Danielle still haunted him and suddenly Sheffield wanted to know the truth . . . what really happened five years ago? F I N A L L Y, Rafael decided to get to the bottom of his nightmare! And shockingly . . . it seemed the entire affair was nothing more than an enemy enjoying a cruel, vindictive joke.

Now . . . let the games begin!

Quietly, Rafael Saunders and Danielle Duval wed. Kat Martin's game? The standard "discontent/deception" theme. For weeks, Rafe and Danielle do not make love - Danielle needs time to adjust. The necklace is missing - is Danielle lying? Desperately, the Duke of Sheffield needs an heir - Danielle is barren and consciously she holds back the truth. An attempt is made on Danielle's life - is Rafael responsible?

This is cagey writing. By using the "discontent/deception" theme, an author can cover much ground. In THE HANDMAIDEN'S NECKLACE, Kat Martin remains true to form. The "discontent" theme displays lustful nights and unpleasant days. The "deception" theme uncovers guilt and half-truths. Both themes are acceptable if the story has a degree of excitement; unfortunately, here that is not so! When it comes to the romance genre, the reader wants and demands emotion. Kat Martin is a bestselling author; unfortunately, "bestselling" and "expertise" do not necessarily create winning novels. Without a doubt, Kat Martin wrote THE HANDMAIDEN'S NECKLACE from experience - not from her heart!
