Book Description

Who speaks? Who is silent? Who is seen? Who is absent? These questions focus on how cultures are constructed through pictures and words, how we are seduced into a world of appearances: into a pose of who we are and aren't. On both an emotional and an economic level, images and texts have the power to make us rich or poor. In these essays and reviews, written over the last decade, Barbara Kruger addresses that power with intelligence and wit, in the hope of engaging both our criticality and our dreams of affirmation.

Barbara Kruger is an artist whose pictures and words engage issues of power, sex, money, difference, and death. Her work has appeared throughout America, Europe, and Japan in galleries, newspapers, magazines, and museums and on billboards, matchbooks, TV programs, t-shirts, postcards, and shopping bags. She has written about television, film, and cultures for Artforum, Esquire, the New York Times, and the Village Voice.

3 out of 5 stars i really want to like it.......2005-10-20

i really do, but it's so academic at times i just can't get into it. it's not that i'm not an intelligent guy because i am, and it's not that i don't appreciate kruger's work because i do. it's simply that what i most love about kruger is the accessability of her work, and this book was very inaccessable at times. i'm glad i have it in my collection, but i wouldn't call it an "enjoyable" read. it's really more work than fun. i guess it depends on your feelings about kruger if the work is worth it. this is an important book for an art historian or cultural critic, but i would not recomend it as an introduction to kruger.

5 out of 5 stars Remote Control by Barbara Kruger.......2000-09-26

Kruger's work is some of her best yet! She is, without a doubt, the most effective and AFFECTIVE artist of our time. Her art aggressively attacks the viewer, as do her written words. She takes control, and forces the reader to reflect on his or her position/experience/actions in life. Influential and powerful, radical, aggressive, and moving, the book is all put together with wit, dark humor, and poetic grace. An outstanding piece of work from an outstanding, talanted artist!

5 out of 5 stars Things my mother tried to tell me........2006-09-23

As a former clothing buyer spending all of my work time selecting, presenting, and advertising the latest fashions I now wish I had Sherry's book to impress upon me personally how very important MY dress was to my success. She has impressed me with her convincing argument that although what you say is important, how you say it via dress is about 55% of that impression. I loved her real life, before and after stories which has left me paying much more attention to my new leisure image. Thanks Sherry!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-05-19

I re-read this book again and realized how lazy I had gotten on my dress. I went through my closet again and anything that did not wow me, I through out. The last couple of months I have followed the guidelines of this book and have been amazed the way I am treated differently at work. My boss now includes me on meetings, that I never attended before and has given me a lot more responsibility. I went from sundresses and sandals to a much more professional dress and the results have been amazing.
Thank you for this book, it has changed my life.

4 out of 5 stars Dress for Success.......2005-07-19

With "Business Casual" being the norm now in what to wear to the office, this book is great at giving you insight on how to dress for success at the workplace in a business casual environment. Filled with lots of helpful tips and how to "get noticed" at work by those who matter!!

5 out of 5 stars Very interesting to put to the test.......2005-05-20

I'm more of a "tomboy," who like to dress comfortably and casually. I work for a corporation that allows this and have worn cargo shorts, short sleeved shirts, and other very casual attire to the workplace.

When my company went through a shakeup (that eventually resulted with many employees being cut), I started to implement much of the advice from this book. Suddenly, though I had always been overlooked, I was noticed by management and was actually asked to apply for a more senior position.

In response to the person who says that a person in a low-level position can't benefit from _Casual Power_, I would say that it is not true. I'm in a completely entry-level position at a customer-service oriented phone call center. According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, almost 2 million workers in America have a similar position. How are you going to stand out if you are one of these 2 million? Despite my entry-level income, I was able to afford better clothing at discount stores such as Target or by shopping online.

In addition, this book even has advice as to how to "power up" your look if you're stuck in a "work uniform" such as those worn in fast food or retail locations. It is for people at all levels in the work force.

From Joe Catal. Author of the book "Telesales Tips From The Trenches". As a national sales trainer, this book is a must for anyone who wants to get ahead at the job and their career. The majority of sales people I train don't realize how they're destroying their own success by the way they dress. This book will teach you exactly what you need to learn to have the image you want/need to succeed. One of the best books I've ever read in my life. Get it, you won't be disappointed.
Joe Catal.

P.S. Be prepared to be beat up a little. This isn't a cutsy book. It's rough and to the point. I loved it!

2 out of 5 stars not that great.......2007-06-13

kevyn aucoin's books are wayyy better i got this book for really cheap and it still wasnt really worth it. its mostly just about trish mcevoy and how she got started and mostly just about her. it isnt much of a teaching manual.

1 out of 5 stars I paid for a long, boring ad for her products..........2006-02-27

but more power to her, because I should have known better, as I have purchased some of her cosmetics in the past and they were satanically awful--greasy lipstick, even greasy smeary powder shadows.

If you like to read someone pimping herself and her products without giving you one even one useful piece of information, buy this book.

For me, this one if for the trash bin. This book doesn't even merit recycling.

1 out of 5 stars A COMPLETE WASTE OF MONEY.......2005-03-18

I wasted my money purchasing this book. I had hoped it would be like Linda Meredith's fantastic "The Complete Beauty Book" (from the mid 1980's, and now sadly out of print - check out Abebooks for second-hand copies) but this is utterly useless.

What few pictures there are in Trish's book, ALL show the models in little, none, or "natural" make-up, with no examples on the use of colour or different styles at all. Even the extremely few "Level-3" make-up styles shown in the few pictures only show very neutral and natural shades/styles. A pointless book in every way.

I was so disappointed that I refused to give it shelf space. It now resides in the trash! It was only not returned because, living in Britain, it would have cost me more than the price of the book to return it to the U.S.

2 out of 5 stars Should be called "ode to makeup".......2004-02-09

This is a coffee-table book, not a helpful how-to book. I can see how someone who is already very knowledgable might like it, as it is almost a sonnet to makeup.

I had been hoping for something to help me start applying makeup after many years away from it, and I found only about eight pages that were useful to me. I bought this as an investment in my own personal grooming, and as that it fell completely flat. I gave it two stars because it is not totally without merit.

1 out of 5 stars Autobiography?.......2004-01-14

Although this book was somewhat helpful deciding what products were really necessary in my makeup bag, I felt that it was more of Trish McEvoy's autobiography than anything. If I want to read a book on makeup, I would like the majority of information to be ON makeup. Granted, it is good to know who the author is and how they know what they do, I do not need to know everything about her experience and her husband's job. In some places, it did have fairly average how-to information. If you want to know more about makeup and what looks good, I would suggest reading any of the Bobbi Brown beauty books.

    Book Description

Appearance has repeatedly been shown to have a potent and immediate effect on others in a wide range of circumstances. In particular, the consequences of women's appearance are severe and have social, economic, and legal ramifications. From the more obvious role of uniforms in social control through to the subtle interplay between size and status, appearance counts. The vast number of people seeking body alterations or modifications through dieting, tattooing, piercing and plastic surgery attests to the importance of how we look, not only to others but also to ourselves. This book tackles the charged and frequently painful subject of how appearance affects social interaction and the role of larger social structures in perpetuating and institutionalizing it as an evaluative criterion. What effect does obesity have on power(lessness)? What role does women's dress play in others' perception of consent in cases of rape? How do groups operating on the margins of mainstream society use appearance to negotiate power, make statements and effect change? What roles do gender and ethnicity play in the workplace? This provocative book attempts not only to answer these questions, but to lay foundations for future research in an area which affects everyone in profound and often invisible ways.

      Book Description

Society has always been fixated on looks and celebrities, but how we look has deep ramifications for ordinary people too. In this book, Bonnie Berry explains how social inequality pertains to prejudice and discrimination against people based on their physical appearance. This form of inequality overlaps with other, better-known forms of inequality such as those that result from sexism, racism, ageism, and homophobia. Social inequality regarding looks is notable in a number of settings: work, medical treatment, romance, and marriage, to mention a few. It is experienced as limitations on access to social power. Berry discusses the pressures to be attractive and the methods by which we strive to alter our appearance through plastic surgery, cosmetics, and the like. Berry also discusses cultural factors, such as the manner in which globalization of media, advertisements, and movies have trended toward homogenization, whereby we are all encouraged to appear tall, thin, white, and with Northern European features even if we are none of those things. She also analyzes the underlying social forces such as economic incentives that, on the one hand, channel us to be as physically acceptable as possible via the sale of diet pills and skin lighteners, and on the other hand, encourage us to accept ourselves as we are by selling us plus-size clothing. The book concludes with suggestions for equal rights extended to all regardless of appearance. Here, Berry describes budding social movements and grassroots endeavors toward an acceptance of "looks diversity."

          Book Description

With her timeless advice, Victoria Jackson demonstrates the real power of makeup: when you look better, you feel better. Make Up Your Life is not simply a how-to book. Instead it reveals what Victoria took a lifetime to learn: why makeup makes a difference in our lives, why we feel better when we wear it, and why being comfortable with the way we look ultimately frees us to celebrate who we are.

For more than a decade as makeup artist to some of the world's most gorgeous women, including Jacqueline Bisset, Brooke Shields, Rene Russo, Kate Capshaw, and Kathleen Turner, Victoria Jackson has seen how using makeup has the power to help you build confidence. When you accept that your natural features are already appealing, you can feel comfortable with or without cosmetics and learn to look like yourself, only better. In this inspirational and practical book, Victoria presents dramatic before and after examples, offers tips on how to use makeup to build on what you like about your face and play down what you don't, and explains how to achieve the look you want in only two, five, or ten minutes.

Why waste time worrying whether you look good enough? If you take a moment to broaden your knowledge about makeup and learn to apply it in a simple, efficient, and effective way, you can put it behind you and get on with the rest of your life. And Victoria will teach you how.

          Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Has some useful information.......2006-11-06

If you want to know more about Victoria Jackson and how she got her start, this is the book for you. She goes into her life history, and how she got started as a famous make up artist. While she may be extremely talented, this book falls short on technique on how to properly apply make up. I would suggest looking at a few other books before making a final decision on this one. She has an excellent primer on how to properly groom your eyebrows. Her suggestions for other types of application are very basic, and they are ideas you most likely have already read somewhere else.

1 out of 5 stars Too much chatter.......2003-07-15

I wanted to buy a GOOD book to make myself up for my wedding. Victoria Jackson loves to talk about herself... lady this is not an autobiography. And the entire USEFuLL info can put in 10 pages maximum. The information is very basic, any woman who has been using makeup and reading articles in magazines will know. No Creative looks, and even for eyes just one way of applying eyeshadow is given. Nothing about highlighting or glitter... not even the smoky eyed look.... Plus all she does is advertise her products, how everyone loves them. A book is supposed to be objective not preachy. And info on tools is very limited too.
          DON'T BUY THIS ONE........

          5 out of 5 stars Not just makeup - it's life.......2003-01-18

When I first saw this book, I didn't think I'd appreciate it because I already had a step-by-step makeup book and another would just be an extra. However, I was very wrong: not only is this book extremely extensive, including topics about kodak moments, hair, fitness, self-esteem etc., but it had the most amazing makeup tips! I thought I heard everything and had mastered the art of makeup application, but apparantly I hadn't. I always drag this book around with me because Victoria Jackson is *so* inspiring, and has tips for everything. EVERYTHING. It's not just makeup, it's about "making up" your LIFE. Plus, it's just a gorgeous book with great photography. If you're gonna own only one makeup book, this should be it.

5 out of 5 stars The Best I've Seen So Far.......2003-01-06

Victoria Jackson's book is WONDERFUL! The chapter 'Mirror, Mirror' greatly enhanced my self esteem. I also love Jackson's tips for foundation application. Much more detail than I've seen in other beauty books.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Informative.......2000-04-19

An entertaining book full of fun and informative tips for makeup and lifestyle. Loved the before and after shots and the step by step instructions for makeup application and facial contouring. After 35 years I have finally learn't how to shape my eyebrows to suit my face.....that was well worth the price of the book. The great thing about this book is that is not just about makeup, it is about selfworth and being kind to yourself. Not just about outer beauty but about letting the inner beauty shine through.
